This year there were 16 amazing nominations, and the board had a very difficult decision choosing as all were equally deserving.

The youngest was 10 year old Trey-Zell and proved a popular recipient on the day for his work raising funds for charities.

Trey has created his own business using scrap material and a sewing machine to upcycle scrap material into, scrunches, headbands, phone cases and phone pillows.

He marketed them online and the funds raised were donated to several charities.

Trey is currently raising money for Pataka Kai. Noelene Angus was rewarded for her years of effort spending many weekends in all weathers, keeping the Wainuiomata

Coast clean and safe for marine life.

Noelene ensures that the Turakirae Head Seal Colony of 500 seals remains clear and litter free during the winter months.

She has collected tonnes of rubbish over the years and made a huge difference to the coastal environment.

Fishhooks, hundreds of shoes, 160 coffee sacks of rubbish, 48 tyres and 15 crayfish pots are just some of the rubbish Noeline Angus has helped removed from the seal colony on the Wainuiomata Coast.

Dallas Serj is the founder and chairman of the Youth Service Union. Dallas has led initiatives for youth with particular attention to mental health 2020-2021, and uses his own hard earned funds to help out as many people in the

He has recently stepped down from the Youth Services Union to focus on his campaign for a position on the Wainuiomata Community Board.

Community Board member Dawn McKinley says she would like to say thank you to those who took the time to make the nominations, the board was impressed by all the submissions.

“Graduates have been invited to join our ceremonies in May 2022 and alternative celebrations are being planned to recognise the

hard work and achievements of students who cannot attend in May including opportunities for graduates to have photos taken in the Council Chamber on Tuesday 30 November,” he says.

The key to a great Rare disorders Wainuiomata summer survey The key to a safe summer is simple: ensuring as many people as possible have had their two shots, so we can all do more of what we enjoy.

It’s been fantastic to see the people of Wainuiomata getting vaccinated and encouraging their friends, family, and workmates to get their vaccine too. Getting vaccinated means you’re less likely to pass COVID on to your loved ones and people who can’t get vaccinated, like young children.

Under the new COVID-19 Protection Framework, if you’re not fully vaccinated, there will be everyday things you will miss out on. If you are vaccinated, you will be able to visit bars and restaurants, reconnect with family and friends, and do the things you love with greater certainty.

Just like you need to show your ID to enter a bar, you’ll need to show you’ve been fully vaccinated before you can enter your favourite pub or attend events like festivals. That’s why if you want to make sure you can do more of the things you love this summer, it’s really important you get vaccinated now.

The good news is that if you haven’t had your first dose yet, there’s still time to get your two shots for summer. Head to covid19.govt.nz to find a walk in or drive through vaccination centre near you, or call 0800 28 29 26, or book an appointment on bookmyvaccine.nz.

You can also grab a vaccine from the Delta Buster this Sunday at the Norfolk Street shops, from 10am to 3pm. Kokiri Marae have been doing an amazing job running the Delta BUSter, going suburb to suburb to protect our

community from COVID-19. Thank you to Teresea Olsen and the team for their fantastic work.

We’ll transition into the new framework once 90% of eligible people in each DHB region are fully vaccinated. Of course, 90% isn’t the end goal – our target is getting as many people as possible fully vaccinated, so we can make sure all New Zealanders are protected.

I know we’re all looking forward to another great summer here in Wainuiomata, but before we get there, we need to make sure as many people as possible have had their two shots.

If you haven’t yet, make sure to get out and get your free COVID-19 vaccine as soon as you can.

A survey to collect much-needed data on what it means to live with a rare disorder in New Zealand is now live, and aiming to reach as many respondents as possible.

The Voice of Rare Disorders Survey 2021 is only the second-ever survey of its kind in New Zealand and is the initiative of Rare Disorders NZ on behalf of its community, to fill a large data gap on rare disorders.

“Data leads to knowledge, which can help raise awareness of the magnitude and impact rare disorders have on the health system, and it leads to the opportunity to then improve healthcare and wellbeing,” Lisa Foster, Chief Executive of Rare Disorders NZ says.

“There is no official, comprehensive data collection on rare disorders in New Zealand, which is deeply concerning, because it means the estimated 6% of the population living with a rare disorder – and their specific health needs – are essentially invisible.”

The inaugural survey in 2019 was the first time data on rare disorders had been collected in New Zealand, and resulted in some sobering findings; one in three people were in hospital for an average of 16 days per year and one in twenty people were in ICU for an average of 8 days per year.

“We know that there is an added demand on the health system during this pandemic and when people living with rare disorders cannot access the treat-

ment, resources and support they need it means more time in hospital; more GP and specialist visits. Now more than ever we need a clearer picture of the unmet needs of people living with rare disorders and we will use the data to continue to push for equitable healthcare for the rare disorder community,” says Foster.

While there is no official definition in New Zealand of what is considered a rare disorder, the European Union defines a disease or disorder as rare when it affects 1 in 2000 people or less.

“Without clear recognition, this vulnerable population is being left behind. We are eager to get as many respondents as possible from all over the country to realise they are part of a strong collective. Their voices will help build our understanding of what it means to live with a rare disorder in Aotearoa in 2021.”

Anyone living with a rare disorder in New Zealand, as well as their whanau and carers are strongly encouraged to participate.

The survey is open from 4. November until 1. December 2021.

inbrief news Working for families The government recently announced changes to Working for Families that will leave 346,000 families better off by an average of $20 per week.

It’s also estimated to lift 6000 children out of poverty. We’ve done that by increasing the Family Tax Credit by almost $15 per week for eldest child and $13 per week for subsequent children, alongside increases to the Best Start payment, orphans benefit and unsupported child payment. It’s really hard out there at the moment for lots of families - and this is one thing we can do to help.

The intention is after the 12 months there will be an end to stock grazing and the focus will move to restoring native vegetation and ecosystem health.

Toitu Te Whenua Parks Network Plan is the management plan for eight regional parks and forests.

Its includes Akatarawa, Battle Hill, Belmont, East Harbour (including the Northern Forest,

Baring Head/ rua Pouanui and Parangarahu Lakes), Kaitoke, Pakuratahi, Queen Elizabeth and Wainuiomata parks.

Toitu Te Whenua was approved

by Council on 10th December 2020 and provides directions for the parks managed under the Reserves, Local Government and Wellington Regional Water Board Acts.

The Plan’s vision is ‘Restoring healthy ecosystems for the benefit of people and nature’. ‘He waka eke noa’, we’re all in this together moving forward.

Healthy park environments help ensure we have fresh clean water

and air and provide important habitat for birds and animals to thrive. They nurture life through recreation activities, mahinga kai, natural materials and connections with places.

Six core goals set the overall directions for the parks in the Plan. Three are core goals and ongoing; managing natural values, recreation experiences, heritage and landscape. The other three are for particular focus over the next ten years to help achieve significant step-change; working with mana whenua, climate change and sustainability and ‘the way we work’.

T he t heme of t he Pla n, ‘everything is connected’ reflects the place of parks within the broader environment, local communities and the regional economy.

Actions in the Plan identify works such as more storytelling to reveal interesting heritage features, trail enhancements, nature play features, working to gain ‘International Dark Sky Park’ status for Wainuiomata Recreation Area’ and developing night sky storytelling.

New Zealand Police has announced the establishment of a National Retail Investigation Support Unit to address patterns of high priority repeat retail offending across the country.

Police Commissioner Andrew Coster made the announcement today at the Retail NZ Summit in Wellington.

The Unit will partner with the retail sector and crime prevention organisations to draw on current data, identify patterns and work with local staff to better address repeat offending.

Retail NZ reports $1 billion a year in losses from retail offending.

Pharmac to fund Baricitinib Pharmac has purchased another new medicine, baricitinib, to treat moderate to severe cases of COVID-19, with 500 courses expected in New Zealand within a matter of weeks.

“Clinical trials have shown baricitinib can help hospitalised COVID-19 patients, reducing severity of symptoms and time in hospital, and increasing survival,” Pharmac’s chief executive Sarah Fitt says.

Baricitinib, an oral tablet, is not currently Medsafe approved for use in the treatment of COVID-19 and clinicians will need to comply with Section 25 of the Medicines Act 1981.

Usually TEDx sells out in minutes, this year it’s being streamed on Sunday November 14.

TEDx Pipitea rose from the ashes of COVID and a licensee change, largely the same event team with new licensees after DK retired from 9 years of hosting TEDx Wellington. Naturally with all the change in the world this years theme is #Hope.

Wainuiomata’s Crystal Mischief, creator of Sparkleforce Academy of Burlesque was selected for their spin on hope.

Crystal tells the story of how she came to burlesque and created Sparkleforce.

She says it is dark and painful and involves depression, anxiety, being fired from her job and walking in on her husband with another woman.

Amongst the darkness came a life changing event for Crystal sending her on a new trajectory.

“It was life changing for me I

was knee deep in multiple stressors so the quality of the decisions I was making was poor. Burlesque was the opposite to what I was experiencing, it lifted my spirits up and was an escapism for me. It was the beginning of me taking care of myself,” she says.

She says Burlesque as a Healing Modality is the result of 11 years of stripping, teaching, healing and learning to love herself.

“I use complimentary therapies alongside strip tease movements to change the bodies physiology.”

This resulted in multiple boosts to Mischief’s confidence. “The belief I have in myself today is a result of taking the leap and backing myself.

I still have that voice of doubt, but that’s what selective hearing is for right?”

From those initial classes, Mischief went on to perform in Wellington then travelled to Las Vegas where they performed. “I was so nervously terrified to perform in Las Vegas but I had audience members coming up to me after the show and saying how much they

“Equity is at the heart of what Open Polytechnic is all about as an open and distance learning organisation,” she said.

Hutt City living wage Hutt City Council will formally announce its accreditation as a Living Wage employer tonight at a celebration in the Dowse Art Museum, jointly hosted by the Council and Living Wage Hutt Valley.

Hutt City will become New Zealand’s third council to become fully-accredited, after Wellington City Council in 2018 and Dunedin City Council in 2019.

Hutt City Council’s accreditation comes after a long campaign led by the local Living Wage network

and overwhelming support from the community.

Muriel Tunoho, a lifelong Hutt City resident and convenor of Living Wage Hutt Valley, says this was fantastic news.

“It’s been a long journey and it is fantastic to get this over the line,” she said.

“It’s been very much a collective journey of the voices in our community who stood up to say: Our council is one of the biggest employers in this community and this is an opportunity to show lead-

ing Wage accreditation reinforces our commitment to Aotearoa New Zealand and the communities we serve, including our kaimahi and their whanau.”

Finally, the Hutt Valley is celebrating a third milestone — the accreditation of New Zealand’s 300th Living Wage Employer – Naenae Team Trust, a local not-for-profit organisation aiming to promote, foster, and facilitate connections for the best outcomes for their Hutt Valley community by running local classes and events.

Govt to explore risks of Buy-Now Pay-Later scheme New Zealanders are being asked to share their experiences with Buy-Now, Pay-Later products as the Government explores if more needs to be done to mitigate the risk of consumer harm, Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, David Clark says.

Buy-Now, Pay-Later (BNPL) is a relatively new, and fast growing credit alternative in New Zealand, which is particularly popular for online purchases. By using BNPL, people can get access to goods or services now but pay for them later in a series of instalments.

“The innovation is here and we

want to make sure it’s serving consumers,” David says.

Unlike credit cards and other forms of consumer credit contracts, BNPL providers are not required to comply with the rules under current consumer credit contract legislation.

This is because BNPL contracts do not charge interest or fees (other than missed payment fees) or take a security interest over goods.

“I have heard from financial mentoring organisations that BNPL is creating financial hardship for some people. It is important to understand the extent of those harms and the actions that might best address

them,” he says.

“That’s why I have launched this consultation today. The feedback received will help the inform Government and the way we address any potential triggers of hardship, and achieve an effective BNPL sector.”

A discussion document is available

on the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s website, along with a summary document and an online survey where people can share their experience using BNPL. “I want people who use BNPL to be confident and informed participants in a transparent, competitive and

innovative sector.”

“I encourage consumers, advocacy groups, businesses, BNPL providers and any other interested parties to submit their feedback and have their say,” David says.

This consultation closes for feedback at 5pm, on 16 December.

What’s Cooking... The hunt continues for Great Hutt Trees

in Fluffiest Multigrain Pancakes with Almond Butter Drizzle Ingredients:

Method:

s 2/3 cup old-fashioned oats s 1 1/3 cups nonfat buttermilk s 1/4 cup warm water s 1/4 cup natural almond butter s 2 1/2 tablespoons maple syrup, divided s 3 ounces white wholewheat flour (about s 3/4 cup) 2 teaspoons baking powder s 1/4 teaspoon baking soda s 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt s 1 teaspoon vanilla extract s 1 large egg, lightly beaten s 1 1/3 cups fresh raspberries

1. Combine oats and buttermilk in a large bowl; let stand 10 minutes.

2. Meanwhile, combine 1/4 cup warm water, almond butter, and 1 1/2 tablespoons syrup, stirring with a whisk until smooth.

3. Weigh or lightly spoon flour into a dry measuring cup; level with a knife. Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt, stirring well.

4. Heat a large nonstick griddle or nonstick skillet over medium. Stir remaining 1 tablespoon syrup, vanilla, and egg into oat mixture; add flour mixture, stirring just until combined. Spoon a scant 1/4 cup batter per pancake onto hot griddle. Cook until tops are covered with bubbles and edges look dry and cooked, about 2 to 3 minutes; turn and cook 1 to 2 minutes on other side. Serve with almond butter sauce and berries.

The great Lower Hutt tree hunt is on.

Council is inviting residents to nominate their favourite tree as part of its work on updating the District Plan.

Simon Edwards, chair of Council’s District Plan Review subcommittee says “We want residents to tell us about a tree in their neighbourhood which they believe is special in some way. It could have visual appeal or be of historical, botanical, or environmental value.

“Whichever it is, we want people to help us identify trees across Lower Hutt that are deserving of special care to ensure future generations can enjoy them.”

Arborists will then assess all the nominated

trees against established criteria. If the criteria are met the trees could be noted in the updated District Plan, qualifying them for maintenance costs and protected status.

“There are already more than 140 trees across the city that are recognised as having significance. They make a distinctive contribution to our community’s identity,” says Edwards. “Our last review was in 2014 so we know there will be more that we need to consider.”

Living Wage Week Living Wage Movement Aotearoa NZ has joined other Living Wage groups around the world to celebrate the power of the Living Wage during November.

From 7-14 November the Living Wage Movement will celebrate Living Wage Week and highlight the impact of the Living Wage on workers and their whanau and communities and celebrate

the 300 employers who have stepped up to become fully accredited Living Wage Employers. These employers have committed to paying a minimum of the New Zealand Living Wage rate of $22.75 an hour to their directly-employed workers and those employed via contractors, such as cleaners.

EOTC at El Rancho By: Gerald Rillstone After a tough year of cancellations due to COVID Wainuiomata Intermediate senior students got a taste of the great outdoors on a camp at El Rancho in Waikanae.

Students got the opportunity on their

two day stay to experience go-karting, tubing down the river, archery, orienteering and frisbee golf.

They also had the opportunity to build and float a raft along with horse riding.

With a lot of hard work put in earlier in the year raising funds to go on camp it was a welcome break from the classroom.

Hutt Hospital parking fee hike New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO) members working at Wellington and Hutt Hospitals are appalled by a recent decision

by Capital Coast District Health Board (CCDHB) to nearly double parking fees for most staff.

An NZNO delegate says the decision is a huge affront to workers who rely on private transport.

“It’s a kick in the guts. We’ve just had a recent pay increase and now having to pay double feels like not getting an increase at all. It’ll force staff to find other less desirable places to park, like residential areas, and that presents a big safety concern.

“As a predominantly female workforce who often work unsociable hours, we’re at risk of predatory behaviour and assaults which happen too often. Staff don’t feel safe walking long distances to cars and the same goes for taking public transport late at night.

“There’s also an ongoing issue with cars being broken into while we’re on nights. For us, safety is best guaranteed by being able to park at the hospital.”

The delegate says the fee hike was framed by CCDHB as an equity based policy meant to incentivise staff to find greener travel options.

By Andy McGechan Motorcycling events wouldn’t happen without women like Canterbury’s Jo Ffitch being involved says Motorcycling New Zealand’s (MNZ) Women’s Commission.

“The major role women undertake to ensure motorcycling events can take place should not be underestimated,” said MNZ’s Women’s Commissioner Sandra Perry.

“Many of New Zealand’s motorcycling events just wouldn’t happen without the women members of organising teams and club committees.

“Jo Ffitch of the Canterbury ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle) Club is an inspiration and a role model to many women in the motorcycling community – she makes things happen.

“Jo is a dedicated committee member of her club, working as secretary/treasurer, sign-on person and lap scorer,” said Perry.

Jo Ffitch said: “Women can do anything – we can race motorbikes, be officials, organise events and govern the sport.

“I’ve never been a racer, however I’ve done almost everything else in the past ten years at the Canterbury ATV Club.

“ATV racing is a great sport with many families involved and they love it –everyone comes off the race track with massive smiles on their faces.

Blues make right signings in rebuild The Blues are getting a legitimacy to their franchise they have not had in 20 years.

Segner, 20, joins last year’s key young additions Sam Darry and Taine Plumtree as an investment in the future, with Blues coach Leon MacDonald high on the upside of the rugged German who came to Nelson College on a school exchange in 2017.

I watched Segner for two years at Nelson College and he was a

standout.

He was named the Crusaders’ regions best player in his final year and I am confident he will be more than just a one-and-done All Black.

Schmidt’s resume speaks for itself, a talented Kiwi coach who got the best out of the Irish players during his tenure.

He will be an asset for MacDonald to bounce ideas off as he tries

to get the Auckland franchise back into title contention in a hotly contested New Zealand conference.

Segner is, in my view, a loss for the Crusaders and I think it will be one the franchise lives to regret over time.

The Crusaders, for their part, say they can’t keep everyone and that’s true but if Canterbury’s lacklustre effort in the NPC is anything to go by, then recruitment and reten-

tion must remain a focus for New Zealand’s top rugby franchise.

The Blues are starting to get the pillars of a promising franchise and removing the soft under-belly which has plagued them for almost two decades.

A strong Blues franchise can be a positive for rugby in this country as it goes through a transitional period after the McCaw era.

Raw sugar Chelsea Sugar New Zealand is undertaking a recall of raw sugar because of low-level lead contamination.

A New Zealand Food Safety (NZFS) expert science assessment, which has been independently peer-reviewed, found the immediate food safety risk from this raw sugar is low but supports a recall.

Vincent Arbuckle says the risk assessment is based on the levels of lead detected in the raw sugar and the potential exposure for consumers.

This recall does not affect refined white sugar.
