Lucas chases his dreams

Churton Park violinist Lucas Baker is not one to let an opportunity pass him by.

The fourth year New Zealand School of Music student is averaging four concerts a week while juggling study commitments.

The 22-year-old has been playing the violin since the age of three as he looks to perfect his craft.

“My older brother was having his first violin lesson and I didn’t say a word but I stood in front of him wanting my turn and that’s how it all started.”

Lucas likes a busy schedule.

“This week I’ve got four different concerts and then a masterclass.

“I’m just jumping from one thing to the next and there are rehearsals for other things as well, so it’s busy but I’m enjoying it.

He won the NZ School of Music Concerto Competition which involves all instrumentalists compete to get to be a soloist for the NZ School of Music Orchestra in October.

Lucas will be joining Voix de femmes, a women’s choir, in their next concert on August 21 at Karori’s St Teresa’s Church, entitled ‘J’imagine’. Taking inspiration from the words of John Lennon the choir asks you to imagine a world where there is no greed or hunger, nothing to kill or die for, living life in peace. Lucas will accompany the choir in Five Hebrew Love Songs by Eric Whitacre, the Prayer of St Francis of Assisi

by New Zealander David Childs as well as playing the stunning and much-loved Meditation by Massenet J’imagine.

He will have the privilege to be playing on a Pressenda violin belonging to the late violinist, Stephen Managh,who wanted it to be played by New Zealand’s most promising young violinists, to assist with their musical careers.

“I always enjoy playing with (Voix de femmes) and I look forward to collaborating with them.

“Every concert or rehearsal

adds to the experience of becoming a musician.”

Lucas says he enjoys the lifestyle of chasing his dream.

“It’s definitely not a 9-5 job but learning when to take breaks is important both physically and mentally because it can be a demanding career.”

Lucas says not being able to perform to a live audience during the pandemic has positively impacted his ability.

“We did some Zoom concerts which kept the performing side alive,” he says.

“I decided to shift my focus onto my technique on my instrument over that time and I would say it helped but with music you always take little steps and see the results over a long period of time.”

In his spare time, Lucas teaches acrobatics to young people and this comes on the heels of studying classical ballet.

He hopes to take his talents overseas.

“I’d like to go somewhere in Europe or Australia.

“The Oslo Philharmonic is a place I would like to play but I’d like to also be part of the NZSO and come home and give back to the community and do outreach programmes at schools.”

Exciting Khandallah pool upgrade The Onslow Residents’ Community Association (ORCA) is “excited” that Wellington City Council is about to engage with the community on the $8.05 million rebuild of the Khandallah swimming pool, ORCA’s President, Lawrence Collingbourne, says.

The council will be holding a workshop on the pool upgrade at the Khandallah Town Hall at 7pm on 23 August.

Mr Collingbourne says that the workshop is being presented to invited people, including representatives of ORCA. “We are very excited about that and look forward to getting [the pool upgrade] under way this year,” he says.

“The pool hasn’t had any money spent on it in the last 40 or 50 years.

“It’s time it got a major injection of life.”

Once upgraded, the pool will “provide a much better experience for people looking for recreation in our area,” Mr Collingbourne says.

An initiative by an OCRA member, John McGrath, may well have made a significant contribution to the council decision to spend $8.05 million on

upgrading the pool.

In 2021 Mr McGrath organised a petition, asking the council to keep the pool open until Easter, instead of shutting down at the end of summer.

The petition had attracted more than 500 signatures by the time it was presented to the council.

Mr McGrath said he had checked the council’s petition information and the petition on the Khandallah pool was the” most popular and the most supported single suburb petition”.

It also ranked as the third most supported of all the city-wide petitions.

Khandallah’s swimming pool is “not just a swimming pool, it is an outdoor destination,” Mr McGrath said. He also noted that the pool was next to the “most popular walking track in the city.

“Khandallah is a beautiful suburb and I think the pool is a great part of it.”

The major drive to secure the council decision to spend $8.05 million upgrading the pool came from Cr Diane Calvert, the Wharangi/Onslwo-Western Ward councillor, Mr McGrath said.

Cr Calvert also led the drive within the council to push for a full rebuild of the pool, including heating of the main pool and the installation of a new spa, a push that the majority of councillors

supported at the council’s 3 February meeting.

Now “a plan is in place to start the community engagement” in the rebuild of the Khandallah Pool, Cr Calvert told the Independent Herald this week.

After the council receives community (local expert) input, the council will then schedule further design work. The council’s budget for the pool upgrade is scheduled to commence in 2023/24.

Library hosts exhibition promoting world peace Joh nsonville Libra r y at Wa itoh i is hosting the Tnjmanako annual exhibition of children’s art – supporting a nuclear-free world and an inclusive Aotearoa where all lives are celebrated.

The free exhibition, which includes 280 pieces of work from

participating schools around the Wellington region, is open to the public until August 21.

First held in Wellington in 2015, Tnjmanako is timed each year to coincide with Hiroshima Day on 6 August, the anniversary of the atomic bombing at the end of World War Two.

Live shows feature election candidates

A series of live web shows will allow people to hear from candidates who are running in this year’s local body elections.

Called It’s in the Ballot, the event is based on the format of the popular television show It’s in the Bag, and the shows will run throughout greater Wellington, including taki and the Wairarapa.

Sam Somers, well known for his role in the organisation of the Johnsonville Sunday Market, is both the producer and host of It’s in the Ballot.

During the two-hour show, the candidates will first give an opening statement.

Each candidate in turn will then

choose one of 30 sealed boxes, from which a question will be drawn – a question the candidate must answer.

Among the 30 boxes will be two “booby boxes”, one being a “dodge the question” card and the other being a “defer the question” card. If a candidate draws one of these cards, they can use it at their discretion to pass on a question.

Candidates are given a list of the questions before the show date in order to prepare themselves for the show.

Before each show, the question cards will be placed randomly into the boxes, then sealed by someone who is not part of the onscreen, editing or camera crew, and then placed on the ballot box tables.

The chosen box will be unsealed

by the show’s local guest co-host, who then reads out the question for the candidate to answer.

After one hour of answering questions, there will be a 10-15 minute intermission.

Following that, interviews with local people will be shown, saying what they want from a candidate and what they would like to see fixed. Then there will be a segment entitled “hard hitting questions”, which will cover hot topic issues for the area and will come from the most commonly submitted questions for the area.

The show will then move back to candidates answering more questions drawn from the boxes, followed by a closing statement from each candidate.

NZ’s chef of the year Wellingtonian Jiwon Do is New Zealand’s 2022 chef of the year.

Mr Do, the executive chef of Hippopotamus Restaurant and Cocktail Bar and Hot Sauce in Cable Street, was named chef of the year at the recent Hospitality New Zealand awards evening.

Mr Do is “extremely innovative,” the judges noted.

His work includes partnerships with non-food-related brands and creating ways to bring them to the table.

“He is passionate about local and sustainably-sourced ingredients.

“He gives back to his community, regularly participating in charity gala dinners and local food shows, sharing his culinary art and teaching aspiring chefs.”

Hospitality NZ Chief Executive Julie White says the winners were of exceptional quality but she is in no doubt they are just the tip of the

Once an entrepreneur, always an entrepreneur Huntleigh Home resident John Robinson says he has always had an entrepreneurial spirit.

In 1978 he co-founded EziBuy, now the largest multi-channel retailer in Australasia, in his hometown of Palmerston North.

He also ran a vineyard in South Auckland with his wife and says starting a business is about coming up with an idea and running with it.

“I’ve always had ideas, some of which worked, fortunately.”

While his business days might be behind him, he still has some advice for others.

“Don’t hesitate, if there is an opportunity, take it, that’s my advice.

“Grab the opportunity when it is there. Go all out, make it work. If you can’t make it work, you’ve got the wrong project. Walk away, never be afraid to walk away as well.”

John has been at Enliven’s Huntleigh Home for the past few years and has enjoyed making it his home.

He is particularly fond of the community aspect of the home and says there is always someone to talk to as it is full of “a delightful array of eccentrics.”

Music has also been a big part of his life, and for many years he played trombone in a band called National Dixie.

While he has given up the trombone, John still enjoys taking part in musical activities at the home or sitting down to listen to classical or jazz music.

He still remembers playing in his first jazz concert in Masterton when he was just 12 years old, where he also spent time at Kandahar Manor, his great grandmother’s home, now Enliven’s Kandahar Home.

Public asked to give new sail installation a wide berth Brand new sails are returning to Queens Wharf this month and are looking wellcrafted and shipshape.

The sails were removed in November 2021 as the custom-made materials had long surpassed their expiry date and were no longer in a safe condition.

The masts and guy cables have been repaired and new sails manufactured, and will all be installed just a few months later than estimated despite the impacts of

COVID-19 and supply chain delays.

Parts of Queens Wharf Square will be cordoned off as local contractors will be using heavy machinery to reinstall the sails, rigging and masts.

Works are expected to run from Monday 8 August to Friday 9 September between 7.30am-5pm, but are dependent on weather as calm conditions are required.

The Queens Wharf sails, originally installed in 1996 and contributing towards

making the site a popular place for recreational activities, hospitality and events, will be in place for the opening of the World of Wearable Arts 2022 in

September.

Replacement sails funding is in the Longterm Plan, with the final cost of $500,000 including removal and reinstallation.

This gives you more buying choice and higher likelihood to secure your desired property. You can potentially avoid a lot of tenders/auctions as well. Sellers are still motivated and keen to see your offer.

4. Interest Rates – The Reserve Bank has indicated that the cash rate will continue to rise in 2022, by securing a property earlier you can benefit by locking in lower interest rates. Due to the nature of compounding interest, even a slightly lower interest rate will calculate to significant savings. So get in

before they go up again.

5. Cheaper Renovations – With the construction industry being sidelined due to market changes and supply issues, tradespeople have started to ring us looking for work again. We’ve also seen prices returning to pre boom years. So, if you need to fix anything or renovate to maximise your sale potential, now is a great time.

Local colleges debate Government marketing of indigenous cultures The 12th annual debate between Newlands and Onslow Colleges, organised by the Johnsonville Lions Club was held last Thursday at Onslow College.

The moot asked the students to debate that the Government should not promote and market indigenous cultures for the purposes of tourism.

Onslow College took the affirmative side. A small audience enjoyed well-reasoned arguments, and heard differing reasons to support both side of the proposal.

The debating students brought forward a wide and insightful series of arguments to support their cases. After careful deliberation guest adjudicators local MP Greg O’Connor, with Brook Kinajil-Moran and Jesse Richardson of the Wellington Speaking Union, determined that Newlands had won the debate.

The adjudicators agreed that the debating standard was strong, with clear thinking and positive arguments from both teams. Onslow College debaters put forward interesting arguments for Government to not promote the indigenous culture, citing for example that tourists may

not actually experience what was being promoted.

However Newlands winning approach was to clearly outline benefits for local indigenous cultures such as broader knowledge and acceptance of their culture, and economic benefits to be gained.

This annual Lions Intercollege debate provides an opportunity for members of the local colleges’ debating teams to debate in front of a public audience.

Student self-confidence, public speaking skills and ability to think clearly are improved through this local Lions Club project. “We value the support of both local colleges for this Lions Club initiative” said Lions Club President Garth Mincher “These young debaters have

shown us that our community’s future will be in good hands when they progress through their careers”” Next year’s debate will be held at Newlands College with Newlands College taking the affirmative side.

Do Wellingtonians Really Want a Car-free City?

Wellington City Council is in the process of implementing a costly plan to turn Wellington into a cycling and walking city hostile to vehicular traffic. Do we want this, and even if we do, can we afford it?

The benefits to cyclists of WCC’s cycleway project (often questionable) are far outweighed by the frustrations caused to other road users. These include: đŏ the impact on traffic flow đŏ the loss of parks which enable the elderly in particular to access essential services and places of recreation, from the Thorndon Eye Clinic to the Island Bay Bowling Club. đŏ the loss of parking near commercial premises Businesses in Newtown, in and around the Golden Mile, and on Thorndon Quay have all voiced opposition to the policy.

The glorified bus lane that will be the revamped Lambton Quay does not even provide a proper cycleway. That will be in Featherston St, presumably sacrificing car parks there as well.

The Island Bay cycleway is a mess, unpleasant and unsafe for cyclists. I haven’t cycled the one outside the hospital yet, but I’m told it’s little better.

Cars are an essential part of our transport systems. The current approach will only lead to chaos, loss of businesses, and a decaying city.

The Council must call a halt to its cycle plan, restore Island Bay Parade and start to plan transport for all Wellingtonians.

While we are spending money on projects that people don’t want, there is nothing in the budget for essentials. For example: đŏ In May last year it was reported that there are fifty complaints a day about Wellington’s leaky water pipes. Why is this problem not a top priority? đŏ Major thoroughfares with fast-moving traffic should have overbridges for pedestrians. For Cobham Drive, however, the Council has gone for the cheaper option of a pedestrian crossing, in defiance of common sense and the wishes of road users.

It’s time the Council focused on meeting the aspirations of Wellingtonians. A recent survey shows that only 12% of Wellingtonians are satisfied with the performance of their city council.

It’s time to listen to the 88%.

North Wellington fighting relegation battle

Local MP, Greg O’Connor, (and his dog) braved the elements at Alex Moore Park to witness the start of round 15 of 18 in the Men’s Central Region Football League when TFS North Wellington Hosted Havelock North Wanderers.

Apart from one man and his dog, there weren’t too many other hardy souls who braved the atrocious winds. Both the advertising hoardings and North Wellington team were the casualties of the day with Havelock North romping away for a comprehensive 4-1 win. Norths were the architects of their own demise by failing to clear the ball when they could so easily have done so. This led to Havelock’s first two goals. Add to that conceding a penalty and being powerless to stop a magnificent strike from Joshua Tollervey, to take the game well out of reach for the home team five

minutes from full time. Although Ahmed Othman opened the scoring for Norths with a fine goal after half an hour of play, Norths still went into the sheds at the break, 2-1 down. The much-anticipated rally never happened in the second spell and with it, the prospect of securing safety from the relegation zone with three matches still to play. The comfort level in the vans steaming back to Havelock North that same evening would know doubt be high with three points safely tucked away in the kit bag.

While Wellington United are currently bottom of the table, they would have been heartened with a narrow 2-1 loss to Miramar Rangers. Petone will similarly be having happy thoughts with a significant 4-0 win over Western Suburbs. Waterside Karori’s recent form has not improved and Wellington Olympic prevailed in a 2-0 home win. Sunday was

an important day for Napier City Rovers. They very much enjoyed their 2-0 home win against the Wellington Phoenix Reserves and are odds on favourites to make the top four and progress to the summer league.

So where does this leave us in terms of the top four sides and the wooden spoon? It ain’t over yet folks but we can be certain that with games in hand for Miramar and Karori, the national summer league teams who can pack their sun screen and beach towels will be Wellington Olympic (36 points), Miramar Rangers (33), Phoenix Reserves (30) and Napier (25).

Things are so tight currently that in theory, any of the six remaining teams could be relegated. Karori and Petone are on 16 points, North Wellington 15, Western Suburbs 14, Havelock North 12 and Wellington United are on 9 points.

Stay tuned, it’s going to be a doozy.

Repair cafe coming to Ngaio Ngaio is about to get a Repair Café! A Repair Café, staffed by volunteers, is a place to take a broken household item with the hope that it can be fixed and have a coffee and a chat while you are there.

A Repair Café can cope with: a garment that needs an elbow patch; a kettle that needs a handle refastened; a soft toy that needs stitching, a pottery teapot needing a spout glued; a stool with a wobbly leg; a toaster with a loose cord. Save it from the tip!

Ngaio Repair Café will be run by Ngaio Union Church. Minister Sue Brown says “we see this as part of our service to the community and we are looking for volunteers to help us. We have a few of our own members but we need additional people who can sew, who can sharpen knives and scissors, who can do general household fixing and who can handle minor electrical repairs. Enhancing Karori’s safety Making Karori a safer place is the focus of an upcoming meeting.

Organised by the Karori Residents’ Association, the Karori Safety Meeting will be held at 7pm on 18 August at the Karori Community Centre.

“My goal for the evening is getting the community involved in making Karori a safer place,” says Andrea Skew, the Chair of the Karori Residents’ Association.

“It’s about getting the community involved in looking after the community, rather than moaning about lack of resources.”

There is currently a lack of resources. The Police, for example, are “understaffed and overstretched,” Ms Skew says.

Because of that “it’s becoming more and more obvious that people in the community need to be involved in helping one another.

“The future of New Zealand is villages looking after their villages.”

The safety meeting will provide education so people can do exactly that.

There will be three speakers – Police Sergeant Hamish Knight, Emma McGill from Neighbourhood Support (previously Neighbourhood Watch), and Scott Lawrence from the Karori Community Patrol.

They will provide the education, which will show that “there’s heaps we can do in the community,” Ms Skew says.

People could, for example, become involved in the community patrol if they would like to.

Community patrol members need spend only one night a month on the patrol.

“If we got enough people, we could have the [community patrol] car out every night.”

In fact, the residents association would like to see numbers on the community patrol increase significantly, to the point where two cars were on patrol each night.

“Hopefully we will get a good turnout to the meeting,” Ms Skew adds.

With a population of 16,000 people, Karori is the largest suburb in Wellington. In fact, it is the largest in the lower North Island.

Join the Steam Incorporated team as they depart the Kapiti Coast and head for the Rangitikei district to Taihape!

Headed by one of their New Zealand built steam locomotives, departing from Paekakariki, they quickly escape suburbia as the train powers north collecting passengers at Paraparaumu, Waikanae, Otaki, Levin, Palmerston North and Feilding. Whilst the train is watered and serviced both at Levin, Palmerston North and Marton there will be half hour stops whilst Rotary District 9940 carries out its fundraising events to help end polio. The Rotary are encouraging people to ride the train, to enable others to walk.

On the journey north of Marton, they follow the 1981 revision of the route. Following concerns of the long-term stability of the land in the late 1960s, the new route which opened in 1981 crosses the Rangitikei River twice and the Kawhatau River once over a series of majestic viaducts. The North Rangitikei viaduct is the highest on the ‘Trunk’, standing

at a grand 81m, towering over the river bed.

This section of line, a cutting-edge land deviation for its time, cost a pretty $17m and VHUYHV DV WKH PRVW VLJQL¿ FDQW DQG FKDOOHQJLQJ geological alteration to the North Island Main Trunk. You can see this all from your seat in their heritage passenger carriages, dating back to the 1900s. Coming into Taihape, the train will sit on the platform whilst the steam locomotive is turned on the turntable and prepared for the sprint home.

Bask in the afternoon sun, as the ‘Ja’ does the hard work bringing the train south. Indulge in the option to receive an evening meal as they depart Palmerston North, whilst they whisk you back to the station you left in the morning.

The Optional Evening Meal consists of: Hot Glazed Champagne Ham, Gourmet Potatoes a mixed medley of pumpkin and kumara with peas and gravy. Apple Crumble.

Johnsonville’s Olympic Harriers runner Will Anthony finished 12th in his heat of the 3000m at the World Under-20s Championships in Colombia.

He managed a time of 8.21.13 in hot, humid conditions and an altitude of 3000 feet.

Anthony finished with the 22nd fastest time overall to miss the final.

Will will now take up a scholarship at the University of Virginia.

Fozzie flops predictably as pressure mounts Surely there is only one more week to go of the Ian Foster era.

It is not personal, it’s just business at this point, the All Blacks, once feared and admired in the same instance, are staring up at mediocrity under his coaching and his tenure must finish after a loss to the Springboks in the second test this weekend.

The first editor to hire me at a newspaper 15 years ago had a saying that “blind Freddie could see that coming” and it sums up the 26-10 Springbok victory in the first test.

The All Blacks were a distant

second, their attack was pathetic and the scoreline made the men in black look better than they were.

Only a late try put the smallest amount of credibility into the effort.

In my 25 years of supporting the All Blacks, I’ve never seen the attack so poor and rarely seen the team hopelessly out of contention with so much of a game still to play.

Staggeringly, Foster post-match said it was his team’s most improved effort.

Yikes, he can’t be that out of touch, can he?

I’ll admit here, I felt two All Blacks’ defeats in South Africa would be best for the long-term future of the team and I’m halfway to that outcome.

It brings me no joy to want the All Blacks to lose but it is for the greater good.

The team has been unwatchable for the most part and New Zealand Rugby has to acknowledge this.

It might be unpatriotic to want the All Blacks to lose but I, like many, believe this Foster/Sam Cane era is doomed.

Come Sunday morning and another convincing defeat likely, I

can’t see how it can continue.

Foster has thrown assistant coaches under the bus already and there’s only his head left to roll.

Anyone who takes on this role as All Blacks coach knows the rules of engagement, win regularly and save your best performances for the World Cup. Foster hasn’t won regularly, in fact he’s lost more than any coach in recent memory and for that reason, he doesn’t deserve to make it to the World Cup next year.

As always, the rugby public have acknowledged the problems far earlier than those on the inside.

Sam Cane and Ian Foster may not respect the opinions of the average New Zealand rugby fan, but they have seen this downfall from an early point.

Give Scott Robertson a free-shot with the sinking ship before the World Cup and then appoint him for the first two years of the next cycle.

It’s the only option and he’s the man who can drag the team into a modern style of play.

Foster should have some pride and walk away, spend time with family and regroup because this is getting hard to watch.

Onslow College bowlers find success at NI Champs Onslow College’s Jordan Keene and Logan Heppell found success at the recent North Island Secondary Schools Indoor Bowls Championships in Tauranga.

Both Logan and Jordan successfully came through the qualifying rounds of the Championship Singles event.

Jordan and Logan were drawn to play each other in the first round of post-section

with Jordan taking the win.

Jordan then continued all the way to win the gold medal.

Both Jordan and Logan entered the pairs event and successfully qualified for post-section play.

They reached the semi-final where they lost by one shot.

In the playoff for the bronze medal, they

prevailed in a tight contest.

The duo also shared the Champion School Trophy with Gisborne Boys’ High School.
