Much loved doctor moves on Originally from Hungary Dr Istvan has previously worked in Ireland before deciding to immigrate to New Zealand.

He studied in Hungary and worked in a hospital for five years and then worked in a practice on his own for seven years before he moved to Ireland.

After seven years in Ireland, he says he and his wife had intentions of moving to Budapest with their young son and had already bought an apartment there and renovated it in preparation for the move, but when a friend told him he was eligible to work

in New Zealand he was excited by the opportunity and his plans changed.

“I had no idea I could work in New Zealand and that was so exciting. I applied and received quite a few job offers, and the reason we decided on Wainuiomata was because my wife thought it was quite central and close to the capital and we could live in Lower Hutt,” Dr Istvan says.

Wainuiomata has been his one and only posting in New Zealand so far and the longest in his career and the reason

he stayed so long is because he liked the people and the challenges of the job.

“I think they liked me, the feedback is positive.”

“It is different here and a bit laid-back which is good and the people are really friendly and New Zealand is a really enjoyable country,” he says.

He has travelled widely in New Zealand in a camper-van from top to bottom and loved it.

Becoming a doctor was not initially his first choice of career he says. At sixteen he was thinking of studying to be a

mathematician but when he began studying chemistry and biology he changed his mind.

Dr Istvan has decided to take up a new challenge as a partner in a practice in Lower Hutt. He says it feels like the right time for a new challenge.

“I thought it was time to change, I think you have to move on at some stage to new challenges, it is healthy,” he says.

He heads to his new position at the Petone Medical Centre in October and will leave the Whai Oranga o Te Iwi Health Centre at the end of September.

inbrief news Lower price doesn’t equal lower quality When it comes to vacuum cleaners, Consumer NZ testing found the Sebo K3 Premium ranked the highest out of 47 vacuums with an overall testing score of 85%, retailing at $1,595. The Henry Original HVR200R ranks close to the Sebo at 80% yet is more than $1,000 cheaper at $529.

For cellphones the Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold2 5G is priced at $3399 and earned 73% in Consumer NZ testing.

In comparison, Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 9T retails for a much lower price of $399 and also scored 73%, the same as the Samsung. Minus the novelty of a foldable screen, it performs comparably.

In Consumer NZ’s 2020 technology survey, Xiaomi phones were more reliable, and more of their owners were very satisfied than those who owned Samsung models.

DHB staff orchestral performance Musicians and singers from Hutt Valley and Capital & Coast DHBs came together last year to play music as Manawa Ora – the 2DHB orchestra.

Now they are putting on three concerts in DHB hospitals across the region to mark the Maori New Year festival of Matariki.

Dr Manjula Ricciardi was instrumental in the formation of the orchestra in early 2020 after seeing how much musical performances were enjoyed by patients, visitors, and staff alike.

“Music is a simple way to connect people – patients, whanau

and staff appreciate the music and are grateful for a moment of joy,” she said.

“It feels like we’re welcoming people to a place where we want them to feel safe.”

With the increasing sharing of staff and services between the two DHBs, it felt natural that the orchestra include staff from both DHBs. Staff juggle on-call rosters and hospital shifts to rehearse together.

“It takes commitment from everyone to make it this far – but everyone wanted to perform well and be there at the concerts. It’s

Olympics inspire at Konini

Konini School, Wainuiomata, held its Olympic-a-thon inspiring students to get involved in activities they normally wouldn’t try.

Purely a fun event the students took part in a range of events and when it came to swimming used a bench to simulate what it would be like.

Assistant principal Matt Pegg says it was a great opportunity to get the students involved and have a lot of fun.

“We held two separate events and in the junior event we had all the year sixes leading the different stations so they were having to manage the kids and help with the skill and

give advice. It was not just about the sport but the Olympic values of leadership and of working together as a team and respecting others, ” Matt says.

“It also made it much easier when we had forty teachers helping the juniors.”

Another part of the event was the opportunity for a moment in the Olympics to inspire students.

“There is always some random thing that inspires them, they have never known about a sport until something happens and you can’t rely on TV to be the inspiration,” he says.

Inquiry confirms consumers paying too much Consumer NZ is welcoming the recommendations in the Commerce Commission’s draft report on the supermarket industry.

Consumer NZ chief executive Jon Duffy said the report confirms consumers aren’t getting a fair deal and stores are making excess profits.

The high degree of market concentration in the grocery trade demanded stronger protections for both consumers and suppliers.

The commission’s report showed profit margins in the

industry have been consistently high and above those in other countries.

Consumer NZ strongly supported the commission’s proposal for a mandatory industry code of conduct.

The commission’s report also includes long overdue proposals to introduce mandatory unit pricing, and for supermarkets to simplify their pricing and promotional practices.

Consumer NZ will be making a submission on the commission’s report.

The new season is upon us and if we want to have a great season there are a number of gardening things to do and the sooner you get started the better off you will be.

Firstly ponder a minute how last season was and what problems you had to deal with?

There is every likelihood that this coming season will present the same problems again.

They tell us that this winter has been one of the warmest for a long time?

Or maybe I am older now and find that chilly is cold and that we have had some nice cold times which is great as it reduces the amount of bugs and diseases that will start the new season off.

Overall I would say it’s been very wet and mild with some cold snaps to remind us of the time of the year.

The best winter is several good frosts followed by nice sunny winter days which helps reduce our gardening problem greatly.

A perfect spring is one that takes off early with nice sunny day and warm temperatures for a week or two then a cold blast up from the South Pole for a few days before turning to normal spring conditions.

The warm patch wakes up the pests and diseases and they start to get organised and multiple when the cold snap comes and wipes them out.

If that is how spring goes then you will not have much problem with pests and diseases till December or January and even then they will be a lot less than a normal year.

The answer then is to hit the early emergence of pests and diseases hard with effective controls which is like having a cold blast from the South Pole.

Now is the time to get started as your plants are starting to move with the now longer daylight hours.

Insect Pests are fairly easy to control when their numbers are low coming out of winter.

Allow them to breed and soon one female may produce about 300 off spring and that 300 can be come 150x 300 = 45000 all within a month or so.

Not all pests increase that rapidly but whitefly and psyllids can, followed by thrips and aphids.

You already know from last year where you had problems and with

what plants either in a glasshouse or outdoors in the garden.

To help with control use Wallys Neem Tree Powder when you are planting by putting a little in the planting hole and some on the soil surface in the rooting zone (but not against the trunk of plants) Existing plants such as Roses sprinkle the Neem Powder on to the soil in the root zone.

The powder is quick acting and the smell of it disguises the smell of the plant making it more difficult for pests to find.

Wallys Super Neem Tree Oil is used at only 5ml per litre of warm water sprayed over plants late in the afternoon and will stop any pests on the plant from feeding which means they will starve to death and not be able to breed.

Use with Raingard and you only have to repeat every 2 weeks. Wallys Super Neem Tree Oil also has some fungicide properties which can help prevent leaf diseases such as black spot and rust.

It is a natural control and works a bit like the Chemical one (which has been banned) that was called Shield.

Neem is much safer and predator insect safe. (They don't eat plants only the pests do that) So it is not going to harm the bees, Ladybirds etc.

Diseases that attack your plants can be controlled by using three products, Wallys Liquid Copper, Potassium permanganate and Wallys Perkfection.

Wallys Perkfection is absorbed by the plant's foliage and quickly moves though the plant including the root system to fortify the plant's immune system and assist in the prevention and control of many diseases. No withholding period if used on food crops.

Excellent for Buxus hedges, silver leaf disease and all wet weather diseases.

It can only be used once a month as too much can slow down plant growth. There are two application rates which for first spray at 7mls per litre and then only 4 mls each month thereafter.

Can be used with Wallys Neem Tree Oil. Wallys Liquid Copper and potassium permanganate with Raingard makes an effective combination of

protection on the plants foliage.

Used with Raingard you only need to spay every 14 days except for curly leaf in stone fruit where you need to spray every 7 days while the leaves are growing,to protect them till the time of the disease is past, which is about 8 weeks starting from leaf bud swell.

When the leaves are out of bud burst then add to the spray one lot of Wallys Perkfection.

Another interesting one we found some years ago was Wally Cell Strengthening Spray helped control curly leaf in stone fruit.

It could be added to the copper and potassium permanganate spray.

While on the subject of curly leaf some gardeners have found that Wallys Ocean Solids sprinkled under the tree from trunk to just beyond drip line also helped control.

The potassium permanganate is great for helping control of black spot on roses. Use with Raingard (Can add the copper if you wish) and spray while still dormant and repeat 2 weekly.

Another product that greatly increases the health of plants making them more disease resistant is Wallys Magic Botanic Liquid (MBL) which can be added to any of the sprays already mentioned.

Wainuiomata Bushfire Force 50th Celebration

Wainuiomata’s Bush Fire Force is celebrating 50 years serving the wider community on August the 21st, with an open day at Station 23. The Strand, Wainuiomata from 1 to 3pm.

Wainuiomata Bush Voluntary Rural Fire Force is a volunteer group, trained in rural fire fighting and they respond to rural and vegetation fires in the Wellington rural fire area and beyond.

They also work with Regional Emergency Management and are available for civil emergencies.

Along with the celebrations the force will also be farewelling a number of longtime members.

Well known member Gavin Wallace, a former commander of the Force, is one of them and has been with the Force for 50 years.

He started when it was loosely associated with the Hutt County

Trades

Council and later under the Regional Council. The Force didn’t have a legal discription until 1979.

“Then we came under the Hutt City Council and then the rural fire district and four years ago we switched when they amalgamated the urban and rural fire under the Fire and Emergency New Zealand National body,” Gavin says.

One of the more unusal jobs recently was helping out with the baby Orca which was stranded on the rocks at Plimmerton.

Rotating crews including members from Wainuiomata assisted in shifts with recycling fresh water into the pool.

A highlight of the open day will be an opportunity to take a look at some of the unique equipment they use and take a tour of the National Musem of Forest and Rural Fire, a one of a kind museum.

The New Zealand Forest Service was disestablished over 30 years ago

and to preserve its history and relics Gavin helped set up the museum.

Part of the work he did was converting many old videos into a digital format that are played on four screens throughout the museum.

There are panels detailing the development of forest and rural fire

and several interactive teaching stations have been set up involving working gear, including a pumping demonstration and equipment to measure fire weather.

It is a hands on museum where you can touch some of the history.

Also housed at the museum is the

first Monsoon Bucket brought into New Zealand.

If you’ve always wondered why there are two fire stations in Wainuiomata, this will be a great opportunity to check out how the rural bushfire force differs from the volunteer fire brigade.

Rise in hot water system burglaries Police are asking the public to be on the lookout for stolen califonts/gas hot water systems for sale following a spate of burglaries targeting these items in recent weeks.

Offenders have been targeting new housing developments and subdivisions to steal these califont systems following their installation and are believed to be on-selling these items online through social media channels such as Facebook Marketplace and other platforms.

Police have also identified evidence to suggest that many of these gas hot water systems are damaged

during the thefts with the methods used in their removal, creating potential safety issues and affecting their safe use.

Acting Inspector Jono Chappell, Area Prevention Manager for Counties Manukau South, encourages all builders, developers and homeowners with califont systems to record the serial number.

“That way when the theft is reported to Police we can easily identify the owner when would be offenders attempt to on-sell the stolen hot water systems.

“We also want to remind the public that deals advertised online which appear

“too good to be true”, are often cheap for a reason.

“Purchasing these items t h r o ug h u n r eg u l a t e d channels such as through social media rather than reputable retailers puts your own safety at risk by using items which are potentially damaged.

“Receiving stolen property is a criminal offence and you may face prosecution,” Acting Inspector Chappell says .

Carrington courageous despite heavy workload Lisa Carrington is now our greatest Olympian and Tokyo 2020 may not be her final chapter.

Sure, you can make an argument against it, that’s the subjective nature of sport but if gold medals count the most, then she is at the top of the pile.

By winning her third gold of these Games in the K1 500m on Thursday afternoon, Ohope’s finest

took her Olympic medal haul to six, one more than fellow kayakers Ian Ferguson and Paul MacDonald, and equestrian Mark Todd. Her five gold medals also pushes her ahead of Ferguson.

When other athletes are overjoyed at winning silver and bronze, like they were when the 32-year-old won the K1 200m event, you realise how utterly dominant Lisa Car-

rington is and has been for more than a decade.

The girl from Ohope has reached heights north even she could have dreamed of as she watched Danyon Loader win double-gold in the pool at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.

Being the youngest of three kids, it’s clear trying to keep up with her two brothers by taking up surf lifesaving served Carrington well.

She has been the benchmark in her sport for a decade and with just three years until the Paris Games, there is no reason Carrington can’t dominate at one more major event.

The best part about Carrington is she is ruthless on the water but a humble Kiwi off it.

She epitomises how every parent should want their child to act when success comes calling.

Veteran sports journalist Brendan Telfer believes Carrington has the same mix of speed, power and endurance that Peter Snell had when he ran his races on the track, that is good enough for me.

It is hard to know if she has another Olympic campaign in her but she has the mental makeup to do it in three years if she can find the motivation.

First team get on the board

The Men’s first team got their first point of the season after a well-earned 1-1 draw against Wairarapa United. In an entertaining game that was arguably the best performance of the season, captain Ashlen Stroud broke the deadlock in the 30th minute with a strike into the roof of the net. A Paul Ifill missed penalty, the bar and the post prevented more goals in the game until the visitors equalised when the ball unfortunately bounced over the goalkeeper’s foot giving Wairarapa a tap in.

The Reserves extended their lead at the top of the league thanks to a dominating performance that ended in a comfortable 5-1 win.

Halfbaked continued to put pressure on the league leaders with a 5-1 win at home to Petone, Cullum Waugh continuing his fine form in front of goal. The Fiddick’s scored 3 goals within the opening

10 minutes which helped them to a 5-3 win over Wellington United.

Adam Faulkner and Reed Collingwood both getting on the score sheet twice. The Roundballs ran home 6 against Miramar Rangers with the standout goal going to Josh Castle. 35 yards out, the big central midfielder firing into the top corner.

Onto the Masters games where The Undertakers suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Naenae despite a goal to veteran club man James McKechnie. Pasifika were kept scoreless as they lost to the hands of Tawa while Pasifika Originals walked away 3-0 winners. The OC’s walked away with all 3 points thanks to an own goal from Tawa as the scored finished 1-0.

The Women’s game on Sunday got postponed thanks to thunder, lightning and heavy rain which made Richard Prouse look like Wainuiomata Swimming Pools.

Floorball at Wainuiomata High School

A Floorball Tournament was run by the Wainuiomata High School for the local primary school last week with a range of skills taught and it proved to be popular among all students.

For years 3 and 4 the Floorball Tournament saw 16 teams coming from schools throughout Wai-

nuiomata with Wainuiomata High School leading the organisation for part of their Level 3 NCEA PE assessment.

Floorball is a safe fun and easy sport to learn and is a fast paced, dynamic and tactical team sport.

It is a type of indoor hockey played inside a rink with carbonshaft sticks and a plastic ball.
