Footpath safety

By Megan Connolly

Keri Brown and Harry Gatherer are on a mission to raise awareness around footpath safety. The community is made up of people from the elderly to young families with strollers, they say, which is why it’s important to keep the footpaths as clear and hazard-free as possible. So often rubbish and recycling bins, among other things, can obstruct a clear path making it harder to get where they’re going. “Most of the time people aren’t aware it is an issue until it has been pointed out to them,” Keri says. Keeping pathways clear for all pedestrians Continued from page 1. Harry has always had his eye on safety he says, having worked as a heavy machinery engineer for many years. “I’m safety-minded,” Harry says. “But I didn’t realise the problem until someone pointed it out to me.” Footpaths are what connects the community and allow individuals from all walks of life to get around freely and safely from cars.

However, many footpaths are uneven, cracked, and have obstructions making it more of a challenge to live daily life, they both agree. “Did you know it takes fifty per cent more energy to walk on uneven ground,” Harry says. “Let’s face it, all of us have mothers who push prams or grandparents who need to get places. “And that is why footpaths are built for: pedestrians,” he adds.

Both have been raising awareness around footpath safety in different ways for quite some time. Harry, having recently moved to Wainuiomata, was advocating for clear and safe footpaths in Levin after realising friends were struggling to get around town after surgeries. “But it had never occurred to me until it had been pointed out,” he says. Keri has been working with the Scooteroos group to help fix

cracked and uneven paths for over a year. “We are just trying to raise awareness,” she adds. It is just about keeping a clear space for people to pass through, they agree. “It’s for everyone. It’s for you tomorrow if you break your leg,” Harry says. “We want the community to be a community for each other and care for one another,” Harry says.

Brownies spread community cheer Kai Arahi Brownie Unit in Wainuiomata was embracing the spirit of Christmas recently when they made and collected activity bags to give to the children at the Women’s Refuge, Lower Hutt. This was for their community action project that they need to do, to go towards their Gold Koru Badge in Brownies. It is the highest badge in the Brownie section of Girl Guiding New Zealand. “We try to choose different ways of helping the community each year,” a Kai Arahi Brownie spokesperson says. The activity bags included children’s books, colouring pencils and fun toys. Girl Guides was founded in the UK by Lord Robert BadenPowell in 1910, three years after he launched the boys’ Scouting movement. Today, New Zealand is one of 150 countries that belong to the association. Brownies are for girls aged seven to nine and a half years old. If there are any girls interested in joining in the New Year please contact Girl Guiding New Zealand on 0800 22 22 92.

Transitional housing on the horizon for Wood Street Wood Street in Wainuiomata is set to have transitional housing developed. It is likely to be made up of 34 two-bedroom homes and 10 three-bedroom homes, on 17,530 square metres. The lot, formally Wood Hatton Primary School, was bulldozed several months ago and had Wood Street residents curious about what was to come. What they didn’t expect was the sudden information, in the form of a letter in the mail, that Kainga Ora, along with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, will be developing transitional houses for local whanau early next year. While the majority of Wood Street is positively behind the need for housing, the concern is around the little consultation they received, Wood Street resident Sam Bason says. “Biggest misinformation is that we are not happy about the homes. Not a single person I have talked to is against it. “It is purely the format at which they are doing it and the sheer number of houses being put on to this space. “They’ve just come busting through and we’re like ‘where the heck did this come from’,” he says. Along with the process, Sam adds they are concerned with issues of security and about a lot of “stuff they haven’t been told”. Claire Candasamy has been a resident for 12 years and is concerned about the number of houses to be put on the space and how that will impact on their quiet small neighbourhood. “Where will all the cars go? Where will the children play? What about animals? We just don’t know,” she says. Andrew Booker from Kainga Ora says there is an urgent need in the Hutt Valley to get people

Art in community workshop The final of four Arts and Culture workshops facilitated by Hutt City Council will be in the Community Hub this Thursday, December 12, 5.30 to 7.30pm. Its aim is to find out what arts events and activities are available in the community, what is working well, what is missing and if there are barriers to achieving more. The community’s input is incredibly important and will help the council get a better picture of all of the work happening in the local community and how we might support this better through the Hutt City Council’s arts and culture policy and implementation plan. Contact Hutt City Council’s community arts advisor, Pippa Sanderson, at pippa. sanderson@huttcity.govt.nz for more information.

and whanau out of emergency accommodation and into warm, dry homes. “This is transitional housing which is a much better option than a motel to support people in urgent need of a place to live. “It gives people somewhere safe to live for three months or more, along with social services

and support while they find a longer-term home,” he says. There will be site and traffic management plans in place to minimise noise and disruption to the community, another Kainga Ora spokesperson says. Kainga Ora aims to have the development completed by mid2020 in time for winter.

Claire, Sam and other residents are hoping that Kainga Ora will review what they are going to do and take a step back and see what the locals want, they say. There will be a dropin session tonight, December 11, from 4pm to 6.30pm at Wainuiomata Primary School to discuss the development.

Police can confirm five people are known to have died in the White Island volcanic eruption and eight people remain unaccounted for. Tour operators indicate that 47 people were on White Island at the time of the eruption. Casualties have been moved to hospitals around the country for specialist care. Thirty-one patients are currently being treated at seven hospitals. Both New Zealanders and overseas tourists are believed to involved. Police are currently taking advice from GeoNet experts, who have advised that due to the current risk environment, emergency services remain unable to access the island.

inbrief news School support staff consider pay increase School support staff who are members of NZEI Te Riu Roa will vote on a new collective agreement offer from the Ministry of Education this week that includes a new minimum base pay rate of $21.15 per hour, the current living wage. Support staff include the likes of teacher aides, administration staff, librarians, kaiarahi i te reo, therapists and technicians. Currently, support staff on the bottom four steps of the pay scale are paid the minimum wage of $17.70 per hour and ninety per cent of teacher aides are paid below the living wage This is the first offer the Ministry of Education has made since the collective agreements covering support staff expired in July.

Slower limits needed Road safety charity Brake is welcoming the Government’s plans to reduce speed limits around schools, but wants more, advocating a 30kmh limit in some places. Brake says a 40kmh limit outside urban schools and 60kmh outside rural schools is, however, a move in the right direction. The World Health Organisation (WHO) advocates 30kmh limits due to the vulnerability of pedestrians, cyclists, and moped riders where they are mixing with motorised traffic. This is particularly important for children, who often make mistakes when using roads. Research shows that children cannot judge the speed of approaching vehicles travelling faster than 30km/h, so may believe it is safe to cross when it is not.

Artist to have art in Police custody unit Artist Melanie Corby received first place in the Wellington Police Custody Unit competition on Saturday evening, to her surprise. “I was shocked,” she says. “I was completely speechless.” The project is themed around Awhi (support) and had the general public entering work that will be displayed on the walls of the unit. By having artwork in this environment the department hopes to create an atmosphere

to improve prisoner experience, reduce stress and assist in breaking down barriers. There were 60 pieces of art entered into the competition. The top three will be placed in the custody unit. Melanie’s artwork, ‘Radiant Hope Awaits’, shows two humpback whales intertwined and portray the “Tuakana-Tiena” of older helping the younger. The inspiration struck her immediately, she says. The image of two humpback whales appeared

in her mind as soon as she read about the competition back in July. “Awhi is all about support and embracing those in need. “I drew a big whale which was supporting and encouraging the younger. “The lighthouse represents a guiding light and that there is always light in the darkness to guide you through deep waters.” The artwork will be displayed on the wall permanently. “I hope that when someone,

in whatever mindset they’re in, just stops and takes it all in, knows it’s not just a one-off, and that there is always hope,” she says. Melanie has been working as a part-time primary school art teacher for the last 24 years. But it wasn’t until two years ago that she picked up a pen and began drawing for herself again. To build on her art skills, she will be attending The Learning Connexion next year after receiving a scholarship.

New street names needed The development of 80 Parkway Wainuiomata will create one new public road, one private road and 66 residential properties which means the roads require new street names. The authority to name these roads lies with the Wainuiomata Community Board. They are looking for suggestions from the general public. Ideas and suggestions will also come from the local Iwi, Heritage NZ and the Historical Society. Anyone wishing to make a suggestion for the new street name is invited to make a submission to Hutt City Council - Transport Division, Threesa.Malki@huttcity. govt.nz before Friday, December 27. Any submission must be accompanied by reasons explaining the relevance of the names suggested. If you have any queries or wish to discuss this matter please do not hesitate to contact Threesa.Malki@huttcity.govt.nz ABOVE: Melanie Corby won first prize in the Wellington Police Custody Unit art competition last week. Pukeatua Primary School spread Christmas cheer.

If you were a child growing up in Wainuiomata in the 80s and 90s you would remember the Christmas fair and how exciting it was as a child. It was with this vision in mind, that Kathleen Godinet-Samuelu always wanted to hold a similar event for her tamariki to experience. Kath started working for Kokiri Marae Health & Social Service in 2014 but it was when she took a youth position for a Kokiri Marae lead programme called Tihei Rangatahi that her dream came to fruition. Kath took the opportunity to network with her team at Kokiri, Hub partners such as Love Wainuiomata, Wainuiomata Community Hub and Princess from Pomare Community House who were all instrumental in getting the event off the ground. Kath says “this event is important for our community as it provides

Mobile scooter group, The Scooteroos on the Parade.

leadership opportunities for our rangatahi who were pivotal in the running of activities on the day” It was also important the event was affordable and accessible for whanau from all walks of life. “Being a kaimahi for Kokiri Marae, I see a lot of hardship in our community, it was important we ran an event where money wouldn’t be a barrier and all cultures are celebrated”.

We would like to take the opportunity on behalf of Kokiri Marae to thank the many people, individuals, organisations, funders and services for all their help and support towards the running of our community event. No reira e ai ki te korero, Ma pango ma whero ka tutuki te mahi – which on this occasion meant many hands made light work indeed!

don’t forget to wash the pots.

Kelly qualifies as an automotive technician Kelly Ayres at Gavin Shute Auto is officially a fully qualified member of the team. The born and bred local started her journey three years ago when she started her apprenticeship at the shop, working through Polytech to receive her automotive technician qualifications. What Kelly loves most about the job, and her time as an apprentice, is how varied it can be from day to day. “There is always something different,” she says.

“Some jobs can be monotonous and repetitive but you’re always learning new things here.” To receive her qualification she has had to learn how to understand vehicles from the 1930’s right through to now. “It’s not boring,” she says. “It’s quite thrilling problem-solving.” This career interested her because she had “always liked taking things apart,” she says. Phil Wyburn, the owner of the garage, says it is very rare to have such a dedicated and passionate apprentice as

there are so few now. “There has been a shortage of apprentices in the country in the last five to ten years,” he says. “Kelly has been a breath of fresh air. “It is a huge achievement, people don’t know how hard it is to get.” The garage will be celebrating its six-year anniversary this Friday. Kelly along with Phil, are the two automotive technicians in the team. “I would like people to know you’re never too old to start a career,” Kelly says.

Christmas teamwork at Parkway Christmas, and Santa sliding down the chimney, didn't feel so far away for pupils at Parkway Kindergarten recently. They grabbed their glue, tape and wits, making a Santa out of boxes. The fun activity was set up by their kaiako to promote the skills of sharing resources and space, turn-taking, negotiating and working as a group. It’s starting to look a lot like Christmas at Enliven’s Woburn Home. The Lower Hutt home has already had students from local schools coming through to sing Christmas carols and read their favourite books to residents. One school visit resulted in a spontaneous sing-along when the students asked one of the residents if she could play the piano for them. Two classes of students from Saints Peter and Paul Primary School came bearing gifts for the residents – handmade bookmarks, plants they had grown and Christmas cards. “We’ve had lots of schools coming through and singing, and we have lots of parties planned,” Woburn Home manager Sue Wood says. “We also have entertainers coming to perform – from the start of December it all starts happening! “The residents just love it.” Woburn Home itself is looking very festive too, adorned in Christmas decorations. Sue says Woburn Home administrator Geraldine de Vries has a background in interior design, so the layout of the decorations is looked after by her.

Woburn Home resident June Stewart by one of the rest home’s Christmas trees.

Keeping with the spirit of giving, Woburn Home is collecting small presents that will be delivered to children that will be in the Hutt Hospital over Christmas. “We do get given a lot of lovely things, so it’s also nice to give back,” Sue says. Enliven’s Woburn Home and Apartments, located

on Wai-iti Crescent, Lower Hutt, offers independent retirement living, rest home, hospital and dementia care, as well as short-term respite, health recovery and a day programme. SPORTS TALK With Jacob Page

Believe in the Black Caps once again be satisfied with merely showing up, showing some fight but eventually rolling over. The Black Caps team has flaws, Jeet Raval could not hit a barn door during a day on a farm at this point and Mitchell Santner is not the attacking spinner needed for Aussie pitches. However, these Aussies are beatable too.

They have a specialist captain in Tim Paine, their middle-order is frail once you get past David Warner, Steve Smith and Marnus Labuachagne. Plus, Mitchell Starc’s tricky foot issues may also be playing up. Openers Raval and Tom Latham must see-off the new ball and the Aussie pace attack and Williamson must have an attacking

mindset, especially in the field to try to put pressure on the hosts. None of this Black Caps team has ever played a test match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground like they will on Boxing Day. It’s a tall task but this group of players has achieved enough history over the past five years, that another accomplishment would not be shocking.

Get Movin’ this March Earlybird registrations for Greater Wellington Regional Council’s Movin’March are open and schools are being encouraged to sign up to the month-long initiative to encourage students to walk, cycle and scoot to school. Greater Wellington travel choice coordinator Kirsty Barr says so far 81 schools have jumped on board, and schools across the region have until this Friday, December 13 to sign up to be in the draw to win one of six $100 Prezzy Cards. “Movin’March 2019 saw 125 schools, over 33,000 students, take part in this initiative. But this year we are aiming even higher,” Kirsty says. “Our theme for 2020 is ‘planet-friendly’, so we have put plastic in the past and have a whole new range of merchandise and spot prizes which are kinder on the planet.

“Children who took part in this year’s Movin’March let us know that they were keen to be more environmentally-friendly so we decided that distributing air-freighted plastic items that would end up in a landfill was the wrong way to go,” she says. Movin’March 2020 will also see new competitions involving older primary aged children, more classroom resources, more Te Reo on the Movin’March website and more prizes than ever before. “This year there were an incredible 105,798 walk and wheel trips logged by students across the region. Next year we hope to see that number grow even further. “We encourage all schools to get involved and inspire their students to get active,” Kirsty says. For more information on the active month, visit https:// www.movinmarch.com/

Mackaness takes seven in big win It was a big win for Wainui Premier Reserves at the weekend, with speedster Callum Mackaness taking 7-32. Starting the first round of timed cricket in the more familiar white clothing and red ball, Wainui made short work of the Sri Lankan cricket club. Wainui bowled first, only

needing 22 overs to dismiss the opposition for 91. Wainui only used three bowlers who all bowled well and were assisted by some great catching in the field. In reply, Wainui cruised to victory in the 15th over with Tim Wilson continuing to impress with 59 not out. Wainui 2nds continued

Neil Wagner could be another key. His lion-hearted efforts with the older ball ensure New Zealand has a wicket taker bowling at all times. This team has a fan base which believes they can win, half the battle of playing in Australia is the mental hurdle. If they believe, they can win.

If the Black Caps are to earn a test series win in Australia over the holiday period, they must be aggressive. This team, currently ranked No 2 in the world behind India is strong, particularly by our standards as battlers who wait for their day in the sun. Kane Williamson’s men must not be intimidated and must not

their strong form playing Easts in their two day game. Batting first Wainui reached 223 with Filiva Tafunai and Tanuj Ahuja reaching 50. In reply, Wainui was in complete control dismissing Easts for 63. Tanuj Ahuja took 4 wickets and Jordan Carr 3.

Easts will follow on next week and Wainui are well placed for a big win. In the 20/20 competition, Team Rosco remain unbeaten with a 10 run win over Taita. Kane was best of the bowlers with 3-23 and Pete batted well for 34. Wainui Premier Reserves play Easts at Kilbirnie Park this week.
