Bush day By Megan Connolly

A silence fell over Wood Hatton Playcentre children on Friday morning when they walked into a Wainuiomata Reserve bush clearing. They found a still kereru bird sitting and watching them. This was their first time of seeing a kereru up close. Eventually, the bird moved on but kept a watchful eye over the children as they began to enjoy their morning of nature play. Every Friday morning the pupils of Wood Hatton Playcentre head to the bush to explore and play with the natural landscape, each other and their whanau. Continued on page 2. Youngsters explore their natural environment Continued from page 1. What makes each session special is that each time the children naturally focus on something different, session facilitator Hannah Mitchell says. “Sometimes we explore different parts of the park, explore the bush or use the bendy branches as seesaws,” she says. “There is a lot of imaginative

play.” The group has been doing a bush session once a week for a year now and will continue to do it all year, even through winter. “Some of us had a passion to see our children and whanau spend more time outside in the natural environment. “It not only benefits us physi-

cally but is also a boost to our mental health and wellbeing. “We wanted to provide a regular time where our children could play outdoors together and learn about the natural world. This will help them develop lifelong habits of appreciating nature and learning from observation. “Many of us were able to

spend long hours outside while growing up, but sadly this is not as common today, and it is something that we need to resource and make a priority for today’s children,” parent Johanna Beggs says. Wood Hatton Playcentre was founded in 1970 and will be celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

Isaac and Malachi strive for inclusivity Local twins Isaac and Malachi Paku are looking to the future to share the skills, knowledge and values they have learnt through their scholarship at WelTec. Their dream is to create working environments which are safe and supportive for everyone and all types, they say. Malachi is currently working as a carpenter with Rhy’s Finlay Contractors and Isaac is an electrician with Argus Fire Protection. Both enjoy their work, but their goal is to set up their own trades services company one day to create a culture and working environment which they believe will respond to the needs of their fellow workers around them. “When you work in construction trades you meet and work with a lot of people from different walks of life, many of whom are struggling with different challenges,” Malachi says. “Whether it is depression, substance dependence or reintegrating into society after being in prison, they are all just doing their best. “I want to create a safe and happy place for these people to work,” he says. Both twins were supported through their study by the Maori and Pasifika Trades Training Scholarship offered by WelTec. The scholarship helped Isaac and Malachi to complete their courses without any student loans. “It was very important for me to get into the workforce and become financially independent early on,” Isaac says. The brothers had a work ethic from early on and in their final year at Hutt Valley High were both prefects. “I had planned to do the usual thing and go to university but our parents pushed us to have a look at the trades courses at WelTec and once I had spoken to the tutors I knew it was the right option for me,” Isaac adds. “I always had a knack for taking things apart and putting them back together so I thought I would give the electrical engineering course a go. “Now I would like to own my own business and help others around me.”

Wainuiomata’s local youth theatre group Acting Out is getting their flying monkeys together to raise funds for the upcoming show ‘The Wizard of Oz’ in October. On March 29 Acting Out will be holding a car rally at the Bilderbeck Hall starting at 1pm. All the funds raised will be going into the shows costumes, props and set. The cost is $20 if you pre-register your vehicle by email and $25 for vehicles that turn up on the day. If cars aren’t for you, there will be scavenger hunts and all sorts of prizes donated by local business. Kerry Pratchett attended last year’s event and had a blast. “We had such a fun time

at the Acting Out Car Rally,” she says. “It was a bit of a drizzly day but there we were, racing around looking for feathers near the beach, counting dinosaur teeth, getting photographs with signs and solving puzzles. “It was a great bonding experience with the kids, with a bit of friendly competition against the other cars. We’re really looking forward to doing it again this year.” It’s to raise money for this year’s Acting Out’s performance in October, which is the ‘Young Performer’s Edition of The Wizard of Oz’. “We’ve had lots of prizes donated from local businesses” Email the team to register your rally car at actingoutcarrally@gmail.com.

Pencarrow enjoys an umu By Megan Connolly

There was a bustling atmosphere at Pencarrow Kindergarten on Friday when they celebrated Samoan Language Week with an umu. The afternoon of feasting was a way to bring fanau and friends together to share a meal and connect,

headteacher Dawn Summers says. “It’s a celebration of Samoan families and bridging the gap through food,” she says. “Food brings communities together.” An umu differs from a hangi in that a hangi is cooked below ground and an umu is above.

Uale Mai, Ivan Toluno, Kahn Fotualii and Michael Schuster ensure the food is cooking in the umu.

readers have their say... Find out the WORD on the Street. Question: What is something you have learned in the last week?

Alexia Herrera “I’ve learned that men and women react very differently to the books that they read.”

Dawn McKinley “I have learned to make sure to stock up on toilet paper.”

Leigh Herwels “Even if you’re not in the same city as friends and family you can still feel close by keeping in contact.“

Sylvester Prouse “That we really need a public toilet on Queen Street because it’s impacting people with the mall being shut.”

Eric Salt “I’ve learned how caring people are when you’re having hard times”

Estelle Cainey “In order to maintain the quality of relationships and friendships, healthy boundaries are essential.”

LETTERS to the editor Letters on issues of community interest are welcomed. Guidelines are that they should be no longer than 150 words. They must be signed and a street address provided to show good faith, even if a nom de plume is provided for publication. The editor reserves the right to abridge letters or withhold unsuitable letters from publication. Send or fax them to the address on page two, or email them to news@wsn.co.nz. Please note that your name and street address must also be provided in e mails.

Housing concerns Dear Editor, I would have thought it would be in the interest of banks to pay for reports on the condition of houses they are lending money on with a particular emphasis on leaks. Even building up a database that would benefit all but the unscrupulous. I think given that money is tight

when it comes to buying a home and if a buyer gets caught with a lemon, it is a cost to the bank when a house is impossible to sell or gets sold for peanuts. We cannot underestimate the human cost or the direct cost to the government and the taxpayer. If banks at the very least had a register of reliable people to do the

inspections we would get rid of the undesirable element. Surely we do not need legislation when it is obviously in the interest of banks to protect what they hold majority ownership of. Of course, they may have to sort out issues of internal greed and mismanagement within their own house first. David Smith

Staff achievements celebrated at Woburn Home An honours board for Woburn Home’s health care assistants is the latest addition to the colourful walls inside the rest home. Showing what stages the rest home’s health care assistants are at in achieving their qualifications is a helpful way to recognise their hard work while encouraging them to continue, Woburn Home clinical nurse manager Anna Roberts says. Enliven has an extensive training programme for nurses and care staff. This includes offering four qualifications for its health care assistants: Health & Wellbeing levels 2, 3 and 4, and Dementia Level 4. Anna says the qualifi-

cations provide valuable professional development, which could set Woburn Home health care assistants on a path to more learning down the track. “The health care assistants are encouraged to learn and develop, which brings a sense of satisfaction and a deeper understanding of their role,” she says. “One of the staff commented that it’s good to realise that what they achieve here they can carry with them wherever they go. “I’m proud to see that a lot of our health care assistants are working their way through their qualifications.” Anna began working with Enliven more than 16 years

ago as a health care assistant herself. She was awarded a scholarship provided by Presbyterian Support Central for health care assistants to study nursing. She then gained her nursing registration and was promoted to Clinical Nurse Manager. Enliven’s Woburn Home and Apartments, located on Wai-iti Crescent, Lower Hutt, offers independent retirement living, rest home, hospital and dementia care, as well as short-term respite, health recovery and a day programme. SPORTS TALK With Jacob Page

Changing times for cricket coverage These are changing times in the country for cricket. With Sky Television signing off its test match coverage earlier this month, the way New Zealand consumes its summer sport is about to change. As home cricket moves to Spark Sport from next summer, questions will be asked over the quality and look of the service. Their effort with last year’s Rugby World Cup was erratic

at best and there were many technical glitches. Sky’s service, while overpriced for many years, was reliable and world class for the most part. Cricket fans will not tolerate any teething issues with the coverage. The other big question is who will be the main face of the newlook summer. Long time cricket lead Ian Smith has chosen to stay with Sky where he has run the rugby

sidelines for many years. A bold presenter choice would be Brendon McCullum, a highly respected player who is relatable to the TV audience but also relatively new to commentary. Spark could lure Simon Doull, Craig Cumming or Mark Richardson to front it, all three would be a safe, but an unspectacular choice. The two filters could be Laura McGoldrick and Mark Nicholas.

McGoldrick has no actual cricket experience but is a familiar face to Kiwi viewers. Nicholas was the long-time cricket lead on Channel 9 in Australia and would be a respected international option. The split in the major sports has now happened and like any good arms race, both companies will be trying to impress with their respective trump cards. On a side note, New Zealand

Cricket is still yet to front on the axing of radio commentaries from Radio Sport. Chief executive David White should be ashamed of his handling of this situation. It is yet another in a long line of mediocre PR moves from the man in charge. His silence is a slap in the face to all cricket fans, especially those who rely on that form of coverage.

Turnbull taking the Net, and Alby Mahuika the Stableford. Alby was also celebrating a hole in one on the eleventh hole. The junior division finished with John Reuben winning the Gross, Nick Gough the Net, and John McGregor the Stableford prize. In the Ladies section. The Gross was won by former member Wendy Rhodes.

The Net was won by Claire Hughes, with another former member, Beverly Simmons, taking out the Stableford prize. Special thanks go to Bruce Gordon and the team at Creative Meats in Queen Street for assisting with the prizes. A great day was had by all, including some wonderful memories of the golf club over the past 50 years.

50 years for golf club The Wainuiomata Golf Club celebrated its 50th Jubilee on Saturday February 29 with a club tournament followed by a light lunch, and an open mic session for past and present members to reminisce about the club and the past 50 years. A traditional shotgun-start from life member Bes Bowles set the field under way in light rain at 9.15am.

As the day progressed the weather came to the party, and by the time the 74 players were completing their rounds, the course was bathed in sunshine. After lunch, club patron Dame Winnie Laban cut the cake, and it was time for stories and memories shared by a number of current and former members, Results from the competition were then presented, best Gross, Net,

and Stableford over three men’s divisions and one ladies. A tight battle in the men’s senior division saw Tyson Te Kira win the Gross competition, on a countback from James McGregor. Both players shot par rounds of 72. Justin Reuben took out the Stableford section. Alan Ujka claimed the Gross title in the men’s intermediate division, with Jeffrey

Explore Baring Head Locals are encouraged to embrace the great outdoors on their back doorstep with free nature workshops and experiences. There will be free buses running from the Wainuiomata Community Hub on Saturday at 9.30am, 10.30am and 11.30 for anyone without transport, who would like to travel to Baring Head for the open day. “We want to make it accessible to all locals,” East Harbour park ranger Jo Greenman says.

While you need to book to have a spot on the bus, the event itself not bookable and you are welcome to make your own way there. “It is a great opportunity to explore one of the closest parks to Wainuiomata. It is unique because of its fantastic lighthouse and internationally recognised climate change monitoring centre,” Jo says. “You can have a look around and there is a range of walks for all fitness levels.” Greater Wellington and

Love Wainuiomata are hosting a tracks workshop to discuss the East Harbour Regional Park tracks including Puriri, Lees Grove, Fern Gully, Zig Zag, Stanley Street and Rata Ridge on March 18 from 6pm to 8pm. They will be talking about the ecological values of the forest, recreational use and guardianship and community involvement. Ideal for people who currently use these tracks or would like to expand their knowledge.

Wainuiomata Bowling Club celebrated the life of local legend Alex ‘Alby’ Mcauley at the fundraiser event recently. Over 200 people attended the event that was lucky enough to be graced with “glorious weather”, organiser Richard Morgan says. Many games of bowls were played and raffles were drawn over the course of the day. When the games were done everyone finished with a “lavish” meal. The event raised $5,500 for the Wainuiomata Lions who contribute to petrol vouchers to volunteer drives

who take cancer patients to and from the Wellington Hospital for treatment. “Highlights of the day were the shorter games of bowls, the ‘spider’ and the lavish meal served, followed by the auction,” Richard says. “The Wainuiomata Bowling Club were overwhelmed with businesses and people who provided generous sponsorship for this event. “We had a ‘spider’ in between games, where everyone has one bowl,.” A ‘spider’ is a quick game where, on the count of three, everyone bowls at the same

time and whoever lands on, or closest to the $50 on the green, wins. “The meal was a fantastic success, because of the many hours put in by club the members and family of Alby,” Richard says. The main auctioned item for the event was the 2019 World Cup Netball Uniform signed by the Silver Ferns. The uniform was bought by Wayne Rudolph with the condition that it stayed at the Wainuiomata Bowling club. For those who would like to view this you are welcome, Richard says.
