Life inspires lyrics By Megan Connolly
Angelique Te Rauna is one step closer to living her dream as a singer. The 20-year-old is a finalist in the prestigious Maioha Award at this year’s APRA Silver Scrolls awards with her song Ka Ao. It has been written with local musician Tyna Keelan and her uncle Matauranga Te Rauna. The ballad, sung in Te Reo, is about self-confidence and following your dreams. It was originally written in English by Angelique and translated into Te Reo by Matauranga. “It’s cool just being nominated, especially alongside them both,” she says. Continued on page 2. Song nominated for award Continued from page 1. This is Angelique’s first time as a finalist in the songwriting awards and she has already found the news to be overwhelming. “I don’t know what to think,” she says. “It’s all just happening so fast and it’s not expected at all. I’m just trying to take it all in.” The Silver Scrolls are a massive deal in the music industry, she says, and it’s “quite crazy”. The inspiration for the song came from a conversation Angelique had with her mother two years ago. “I was quite scared about going into the real world,” she says. “I felt I had to do everything for everyone else like my teachers and parents dictated my direction. “So I asked my mum for advice and she told me ‘you gotta do you’ and ‘I want you

to be yourself’. “I needed someone to guide me. She said she would be happy if I am being myself,” Angelique says. She grew up singing, but the music industry and a career as a singer never seemed to be something that she never thought was a real job. “It was always out of reach,” she says. The Mana Ake programme in TiHei Rangatahi gave her the opportunity to “test the waters” and helped her to build her confidence as a singer and songwriter and realise what she really wanted to do. Cur rently, Angelique is studying towards a Bachelor of Creativity at Te Auaha. Last week Angelique performed at the Waiata music awards where she also sang her nominated song “It’s still nerve-wracking singing our own songs.

“It feels very natural even though I’m nervous,” she adds. The Maioha Award will be presented as part of the Silver Scroll songwriting awards at Auckland’s Spark Arena on
Wednesday, October 2. If you would like to listen to the nominated song ‘Ka Ao’ sung by Angelique, search Silver Scrolls, her name and song title.

Zaria and Kaleb rock and roll to the top By Megan Connolly
Youngsters Zaria Simpson and Kaleb Tia rock and rolled to the top of the Capital City Rock‘n’Roll Regionals competition recently, winning the junior intermediate section and qualifying for the nationals which will be held next year. They also showed it isn’t just about their smooth rock‘n’roll moves but also their in the best-dressed category. The two young dancers have danced for two years in the rock‘n’roll style now and being family friends, they are very comfortable dancing together, they say. “It’s not awkward, we’re natural,” Kaleb says. To win the trophy for their section, they danced two routines, a slow and fast one, to whatever music was played over the speaker. When they won their trophy the two say they were very happy. “I felt great and happy,” Kaleb says. Zaria says she was also excited to win because she had been nervous. Zaria loves many aspects of dancing rock‘n’roll, she says, but her favourites are the fitness, the
challenge and “you get to win trophies”. “I also like it because I get to go in the air when I do flips,” she adds. The pair recently performed at the Cultural Celebration showing off their quick footwork and fancy flips to roaring applause. When Zaria’s not dancing rock‘n’roll, she can be founding “busting a move” with the hip hop dance crew, Fernlea Fiyah. Zaria was also recently selected to be a model on the Weet-Bix box after having competed in several TRYathlons. She took a trip up to Auckland to do a photoshoot which will be featured on the box, and also scored herself a lifetime supply of Weet-Bix. Keep an eye out for her smiling face on the supermarket shelves towards the end of October.
That's rock and roll, baby: Zaria Simpson and Kaleb Tia returned from the Capital City rock‘n’roll dance competition recently, coming first in ther category.
Piki mental health to help young people across the region T he Gover n ment’s free youth mental health pilot, Piki, is on track to help an estimated 10,000 young people with mild to moderate mental health and substance use challenges across the Wellington, Hutt and Wairarapa areas over the next two years. Piki is now available in the Hutt Valley, with a celebration last Monday in Taita. Piki supports young people aged 18 to 25 with mild to
moderate mental health and addiction needs. Te Awakairangi Health Network is delivering the Piki initiative in the Hutt Valley in partnership with Tu Ora Compass Health PHO and key stakeholders. “We are delighted to be offering free and innovative mental health solutions through the Piki initiative to a base of over 13,500 young people in the Hutt Valley,”
the CEO of Te Awakairangi Health Network Bridget Allan says. “It’s encouraging that many young people in our wider region have received help so far. “We’re especially pleased to be removing access barriers for those young people needing support who can now refer themselves directly through the Piki website (www.piki. org.nz ) as well as through their GP or practice nurse.
“Young people can access strengthened support services online, by phone, peer support navigators, and by talking face-to-face with therapists,” she says. Piki has been co-designed with help from a youth reference group and is complemented by comprehensive independent evaluation by Otago University to ensure this initiative is guided by strong evidence.

inbrief news The story of Postman John Local postman, John Carter who featured on the cover of the Wainuiomata News May 1 issue has been in a 20 year battle with Crown Law about the wrongful dismissal from his position and John’s inability to make it to the formal apology because he was in psychiatric care at the time. Recently there have been new developments in his case which John is very optimistic about. He says Crown Law has “finally” admitted to the fact that John didn’t in fact waive the apology. “This means they didn’t settle it in 1999 as they have claimed,” John says. This is a fantastic development but it still leaves much to be resolved. “I am hopeful that it will come to an end soon,” John says. “The success of the claim depends on the truth.”

Love Tennis open day PHOTOS: Megan Connolly By Megan Connolly
It was hard not to see the love for tennis at the local Tennis Club open day at Main Road at the weekend. Over 300 people came along to give tennis a go over the two days, said spokesperson Wendy Paulik. It was an opportunity for young keen players to try a new sport.
It's hungry work playing tennis. Demi Davies and Kelsi Inia take a break and enjoy a sausage sizzle.

readers have their say... Find out the WORD on the Street. Question: Do you think children should be vaccinated?
Anahera ThomasHiggs “Yes, I think it is just better– better safe than sorry.”
Marcus Hawkins “Definitely yes, especially with the way things are now.”
Monica Hakaraia “Not too sure, sometimes I’m on the fence about it because I’ve heard some stories. I’ve heard there are chemicals that cause cancer but then it’s all about overall wellbeing.”
Polly Poi “Yes because of all of the childhood diseases, they’re much more deadly these days and they’re hitting the young and the old.”
Tua Auvaa “Oh yes! Because it’s good for the wellbeing of the kids and the protection of the young ones from diseases.”
Madison-Lee Merchant Higgs “I think we should be because you don’t know what happens in life and it could end up affecting the people around them.”
LETTERS to the editor
Cleanfill concerns from local youth Dear Editor, I am Justin Aylor, a student at Saint Bernard’s College. I am 15 years old and I live in Wainuiomata. There has been an issue that has recently come to my attention that affects our community in Wainuiomata. The issue at hand, is the possible extension of the use of the so-called cleanfill site, sitting on the banks of the Wainuiomata River. This cleanfill site was supposed to close and be replanted as a nature reserve; instead, the
local council is prepared to grant a resource consent for use of this environmental hazard for another 10 years. Have the council thought of the already threatened native fish that populate the river? Is it realistic to think that there is absolutely no contamination from the waste dumped? The compliance checking of the site, twice a year is not enough, especially when there are rubber tires, plastic bottles and polystyrene visible on the site in large amounts.
Grants for
farming & agriculture students
Are you studying... agriculture...orcharding ...horticulture...or animal husbandry? If so, you could be eligible for a grant from the Ann Sinclair Charitable Trust! The Ann Sinclair Charitable Trust has grants available for students studying farming or agriculture at approved tertiary institutions in the lower North Island. The grants are to assist with travel, accommodation and education for eligible students at universities, polytechnics and farm training institutes. Applications close 31st October each year.
For more information or to apply visit www.psc.org.nz/ann-sinclair-trust-fund/
A sediment has accumulated for the last seven years and can very easily wash off into the Wainuiomata River. Expanding the site, and extending its use for another 10 years will significantly increase the risk of sediment going into the river, and affecting the river ecosystem. Yes, if this cleanfill site is closed, another one may need to be opened and there will be other community groups who will be unhappy about it, but why continue to use
a site that has already reached a breaking point? Is it because it is an easier battle for the council to fight in a low socio-economic neighbourhood? I understand that there is no easy solution, however, I believe that continuing to use this site will result in the degradation of the Wainuiomata River ecosystem. The council needs to find a new cleanfill site, away from a river bed. Justin Aylor
Woburn Home puts on the Ritz Feather boas and fascinators were donned recently at Enliven’s Woburn Home for its annual ball. Residents at the Lower Hutt home decided on a 1920s theme for the event and were joined by their families for an evening of music, dancing and cocktails. “Each year we ask the residents what kind of theme they would like and they come up with it together. They’re also really involved in all the planning and preparation,” says Woburn Home recreation officer Ashleigh Marr. In the lead-up to the ball, residents helped make the fascinators and decorative bow ties used on the night. Woburn Home and Apartments manager Sue Wood says the lead-up to the event was almost as exciting as the ball itself, as everyone planned what to wear and made the decorations. She says recreation team leader Stephanie Blossom worked hard to ensure the event was a success. This included building a relationship with students from nearby Hutt Valley High School to involve them on the night. Ashleigh says the residents were “buzzing” on the day of the ball, as staff and volunteers created a ballroom decorated with silver stars, balloons, streamers, and the hand-made bow ties. “We all had dinner together beforehand. One of the residents even decided to jump on the piano to help set the mood.” Ashleigh says the staff had a lot of fun helping the residents to get ready, and shared in the excitement when they saw the fully decorated ball room for the first time. “It was a fantastic evening with residents and their families. We also really appreci-

ated the group of Hutt Valley High School students who volunteered with us on the night – they were a great help.” Enliven’s Woburn Home and Apartments, located on Wai-iti Crescent, Lower Hutt, offers independent retirement living, rest home, hospital and dementia care, as well as short-term respite, health recovery and a day programme. Spring Kotahitanga Gala this Sunday Spring will be in the air as families and community join together for the Spring Kotahitanga Gala at Our Lady of the Rosary School on Wainui Road. The gala will be on Sunday September 15, 11am to 3pm. This fun family day will have stalls, food, activities and entertainment, as well as the traditional
White Elephant market. “Kotahitanga means togetherness and our tamariki, kaiako and whanau have enjoyed the unity that comes from event preparations. There is real unity in creating something together as a community. “ said Karolina Surynt-Tapiki, principal of Our Lady of the Rosary. This is the first time that the
school has held a Gala like this. “Local businesses have been very generous with donations towards the Gala and with prizes for our raffles. We are truly grateful, as events like this could not take place without their generosity and ongoing support.” Our Lady of the Rosary School is on Wainui Road in Waiwhetu.

Back to back win for school rugby team By Megan Connolly
Wainuiomata Inter mediate School’s 15’s Rugby team won the Wellington Intermediates Open Weight Rugby Tournament held at Petone Rec last week, beating Brandon Intermediate in the final 20-15. This is a back to back win for the Intermediate Rugby team who won the trophy last year too. “This is massive for our little school considering it’s out of all the intermediates in the Wellington region of which there are 13,” spokesperson Isaac Hayes says. “Stand out players for the game were Nikora Wharehinga, Antwon Onekawa and Brodie Sue,” he adds. The boys had been training for three weeks during school time in the lead up to the tournament. In celebration of their win, the team performed a haka after being presented with the cup. Throughout the day the team The Wainuiomata Intermediate 15s rugby team played in the open weight rugby tournament and back with the winning trophy. This played four games, playing against makes it a back to back win for the team. PHOTO: supplied teams from across the region.

Being a fan - the pointless pursuit of perfection Watching the All Blacks humble Tonga 92-7 in a glorified training run on Saturday made me get my head around the type of fan I am. Most “fans” would have been delighted their team had won by such a wide margin. Not me though. Maybe it’s the 12 years as a sports journalist allowing cynicism to take the joy of watching a game away from me, but at fulltime my initial thoughts were two-fold. Why did we let them score? Why did we not score 100 points when we had 92 with 15 minutes to go? That’s right, like a greedy child at a lolly shop wanting more of the good stuff, I wanted more.
Is that fandom? Is that being a fanatic? Probably not if I’m honest but being a fan of a sports team in my view allows me to both be super supportive and ultra critical. The saying is no one should have higher expectations for you than you do yourself and I’m like that with all my sports teams. I may be a one-eyed Cantabrian, but if the rugby team underperform’s, I’ll be the first to voice it. The same goes with any team I follow. If you’re willing to invest your time and money in a team, you have a right to be critical. Being a fan is different to being a cheerleader.
Unfortunately, sometimes emotion in the moment out muscles common sense and that’s what happened with my All Blacks’ assessment on Saturday. It’s greed in a way, a constant pursuit of that sporting fandom nirvana. Perfect sporting seasons or campaigns rarely happen but it’s what we all hope for. The reality is as fans we have little to no impact over the events of the on-field performance. A live crowd can make an intangible difference but that’s about it. Despite that knowledge, I’ll continue to support my team, yelling at my screen in the hope they hear me one day.
