Talented teen set to dance into bright future Continued from page 1.

This year India was also accepted via video audition to the prestigious Paris Opera Ballet School’s Summer Programme along with her younger sister Arabella but due to covid was unable to attend.

After a successful audition India will attend the New Zealand School of Dance Classical course for full-time training in February next year.

India started ballet at the age of three and it’s grown into a career from there.

“At the age of 11, I was accepted into the New Zealand School of Dance scholars programme and when I made it I thought it was something I could do as a career,” she says.

“I spend 25 hours a week training, it can be six days, seven days a week but I do really enjoy it even if it’s been tough to fit in school work and NCEA level one this year.”

India says being an understudy for Sleeping Beauty has taught her how to pick up choreography quickly, a skill she will need as her career progresses.

She says being accepted to the Paris Opera Ballet School was a dream come true.

happening but to be able to dance internationally and learn overseas was always something I wanted to do, I was over the moon.”

She says she can’t wait to “dance all day” at the New Zealand School of Dance next year.

“It’s been my No 1 option, I’ve seen the school a lot and danced with most of the tutors there and I work and train really well there.

“The chance to live at home while getting world class training is ideal for me.”

India will learn.

She will do open ballet classes, contemporary dance classes, conditioning and Pilates, point work and dancing with male dancers.

They also do nutrition, anatomy, dance history and Te Reo. The course is potentially a three-year commitment.

India says her ultimate goal would be to perform for the Royal Ballet in the United Kingdom.

“To join a professional company would be incredible because I love performing and sharing a bit of myself with the audience is something I love to do.

“The Royal Ballet is my dream and I was always told to dream big.”

India also had high praise for her dance tutor Fiona Haines.

“I have danced with Fiona Haines at the Fiona Haines Dance Academy since I was 3.

“I am very grateful for Fiona and the work that she puts into her students to be the best that they can possibly be, without her I would not be where I am today.

“She is a huge role model to me and is constantly helping me reach my full potential as a ballet dancer.”

Swan Nest to soar in memory of James

Newlands-based mum, Nicola Swan, is determined her son, James, will have a legacy for years to come, When her five-year-old son, James, died in May 2018, from a neuromuscular condition so rare there wasn’t even a name for it, The Swan Nest was born.

Nicola and husband Graeme have started the charity in the hopes children and families receive better support than they did during their son’s illness.

“It started off in my head when I was sitting with James during one of the many hundreds of days we spent there,” she says.

“We were so permanent on the ward that we would see plenty of families come and go and everyone had the same issues.

“There was nothing wrong with the medical support they were getting but it was everything else.

“Two years down the track no one in my family has received any support or counselling.

“People are not built to bury

their children.”

Nicola says people needed support during and after their appointments which were often “life-altering”.

Nicola says the Swan Trust’s core services include counselling in a child-lead way in a music, arts, play way and we wanted counselling for families and the whole whanau unit with an emphasis on men.

“Most families can separate under the stress of having a very ill child and we want to try to help that.

The Swan Nest has been a registered charity since February and Nicola is building it while juggling her fulltime job and family commitments.

“There’s a lot of long nights but it is worth it.

“I knew if it was easy, then something like this would already exist.

Nicola says a family-friendly, child-friendly premises was the ultimate goal one day.

“There are moments when I’m working on this that I wish we could have had something like

Ngaio’s Cummings Park set for upgrade

The Wellington City Council is set to upgrade the play equipment at Ngaio’s Cummings Park and is looking for public input.

Construction is due to begin in the middle of next year.

The play area is relatively small and challenging in terms of design, and the council has engaged a professional playground consultant to develop the draft concept.

The upgrade will focus on the existing play area, specifically and will include changes to layout, replacing existing play equipment with new equipment which meets current regulations and is constructed from more sustainable materials, enhancing accessible features as well as furniture and seating.

The budget for this project is $300,000.

Feedback closes on November 30.

Onslow students given food for thought

On the evening of Tuesday November 3, Onslow College held its annual celebration of senior students’ successes.

The event, organised by the students themselves, was held in the packed school hall with the guest speaker being former student Trevor Mallard, now Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Principal Sheena Millar, before introducing Trevor, briefly reviewed the year, first thanking the students and staff for the resilience they had all shown in the unusual way 2020 had played out.

She had also taken the trouble to check back on Trevor’s records, telling the audience they showed he had been judged outstanding in Bookkeeping, “and lax in French!”.

Trevor agreed with this, also filling in one or two gaps in Sheena’s comments, recalling that he had actually been suspended at one stage.

And 50 years ago, as he left, he and a number of other students had boycotted the prizegiving. “Because we believed it was anti-egalitarian.”

He had some words of inspiration for the students, saying that one important lesson he’d brought from his schooling there had been to ask why – and why not.

He also gave the students food for thought as he told them about a conversation he’d had with the outstanding ex All Black and Black Cap Jeff Wilson, discussing his achievements.

Jeff had said to him that it wasn’t that he had above average abilities.

“I’m just ordinary.”

Trevor said that what Jeff did do was turn up to every practice an hour early and spend that time working on his weaknesses and improving his skills.

At this stage, the Speaker reflected back, drawing some laughter as he made the heartfelt comment: “I’ve made a mess of quite a few things in my life”, adding he had realised it was important to look carefully at the areas he needed to work on.

He gave a recent example, saying that while he knew he was a good debater and arguer, he knew he needed to add to those skills and to do so had taken a mediation course along with a group of commercial lawyers.

After that, it was to loud and sustained applause and cheer-

ing that Wellington Mayor Andy Foster presented an Absolutely Positively Wellington award to student Simon Armstrong, whose many achievements were reinforced during the evening up by the number of times he appeared on the stage for other awards as well.

Simon was not the only one to shine and the audience enthusiastically cheered and applauded as achievements over multiple areas of excellence were recognised, with awards being presented by both Trevor and newly-re-elected Ohariu MP Greg O’Connor.

As well as subject and academic awards, students were honoured for such activities as cultural participation, creative thinking, community contribution and the Onslow Spirit award.

Future of Cemeteries up for discussion Wellington City Council’s draft strategic and management plan for Mākara, Karori and Tawa Cemeteries is now open for public feedback.

The Council has statutory responsibilities under the Burials and Cremations Act to provide for burials and manage cemeteries. The draft plan is based on a review of the existing 2003 management plan, and informed by findings from an informal consultation with key interest groups and the wider public earlier in the year.

The general intent of the plan has not changed significantly, but it has been restructured and substantially rewritten for more clarity, says Councillor Fleur Fitzsimons, Public Health portfolio lead.

“Capacity is a key issue at the Council’s cemeteries. Karori Cemetery is full for casket buri-

als unless family have an existing grave, and only a small number of ash plots are available.

“Mākara Cemetery is gradually reaching capacity. The draft plan proposes the acquisition of more land and beginning development within the next three years to ensure we can meet the needs of our growing city.”

The draft plan explores a new option of offering interment rights for a shorter period of time, after which graves can be re-used. This option would be on a strictly opt-in basis and offered as a personal choice as one of a range of burial and cremation options offered. The Council has no plans to re-use existing graves or disinter bodies already at its cemeteries.

It is proposed that Karori Cemetery will be recognised as a historic place, says Mayor Andy Foster.

Cemeteries like Karori, pictured, will have their strategic management plans pondered.

“The draft plan outlines the approach for the ongoing management at Karori including archaeological assessment, conservation planning and reducing damaging tree growth.

“Heritage restoration is proposed in the first three years of the plan and will focus on planning with no new funding allocated to doing any work on the ground or changing the way things are currently managed and maintained. New funding, if needed, will be considered in

the next Long-term Plan.”

Other topics covered in the draft plan include customer service, grave decorations, grave site maintenance, natural environment, visitor experience and sustainability.

The draft plan, consultation overview document and online feedback survey are available at: wgtn.cc/review-cemeteries.

Feedback is open until 5pm Friday December 11. The final plan is expected to be completed by the end of May 2021.

Paige eager to embrace Marsden leadership role

Samuel Marsden Collegiate’s Head Girl for 2021, Paige Martin is ready to lead the students at the school next year.

The 16-year-old from Khandallah, who received the good news last week, says she’s honoured to be given the role.

“I got a phone call! It was really exciting but a little overwhelming at first.

“Then the next day, we have a really nice school tradition of a ‘Handover’ assembly which was really lovely and everyone was so spirited, making me feel so excited about next year with my year group as Year 13 leaders,” she says.

Paige says upholding the high standards

of the school and the traditions and values was important to her.

“I feel incredibly grateful to get to do this role next year, and alongside the other leaders in our Head Girls Committee.

EYE ON CRIME In Johnsonville a green Mitsubishi Lancer saloon parked overnight in a garage at a house in Tarawera Road was broken into.

The vehicle was given a rummage search and marks on the steering wheel and ignition indicate an attempt was made to steal. The owner of a silver Toyota had picked up a couple of hitchhikers and when he stopped in Johnsonville Road for a comfort stop the couple took over and drove off without him.

In Newlands a silver Volkswagen Passat parked in the driveway of a house in Ruskin Road was

damaged. A wing mirror was stolen. A tenant moving out of a flat in Bracken Road left some items of furniture behind. When he went to collect it he discovered the items missing.

In Ngaio a green Honda Odyssey stationwagon parked in Old Porirua Road had its rear registration plate stolen.

In Ngauranga a grey Audi saloon was removed illegally from the parking area of the railway station at Ngauranga. Police recovered the vehicle in a damaged condition three windows were smashed and the front tyre slashed.

In Karori a neighbour in Allington Road spotted a stranger next door examining a parked vehicle on the property. He called out to the man who walked away. The victim reports no damage done. He is checking local CCTV through the neighbourhood Facebook. A shop in Karori Road was broken into by two men who forced their way in through the front window. The cigarette cupboard was targeted and a large amount of tobacco products were stolen.

Camera shots recorded some useful material and this is with Police.

In Northland a burglary took

place in Huntingdon Street which involved the stealing of a motorbike. The bike is a Merider and was parked in the garage. A burglary also took place in Norfolk Street where the offenders broke the latch on the side window and climbed in. They made a messy search and took some jewellery items.

In Wilton a burglary took place in Mairangi Road where a rear window has been jemmied to gain access. The offender has taken a wallet and has used the bank cards.

Also in Mairangi Road another burglary took place and entry

was gained through a bedroom window. The items stolen included a Playstation7, a remote and two money jars containing a small amount of cash. In Pembroke Road a silver Nissan Navara utility vehicle was broken into by forcing the rear door to the canopy. A quantity of tradesmen’s power and hand tools was stolen.

A house in Edgeware Road, left vacant while the elderly owner is in hospital, was broken into. The back door was found wide open and the door frame damaged. A small amount of cash is known to have been taken.

“Everyone loved the joyful chaos!

As well as the songs and the story.”

So Christmas Live! 2020 is now well and truly in the wings with the

date set for Sunday 6th December at 4.30pm, beginning at Ngaio Town Hall.

With live animals and a real baby, Christmas Live! gives everyone the chance to enjoy an hour’s breather at this busy time of the year – a time to enjoy some peace, to share the Christmas story together, and to take a deep breath - before diving back into final holiday preparations.

But sadly, baby Vincent who starred in the inaugural Christmas Live! as baby Jesus has outgrown the

role – and so the call has gone out for a new baby actor to take his place.

Sue is now looking for a baby eager for the spotlight.

Johnsonville Christmas Parade takes shape for 2020 Planning is in full swing for the 2020 Johnsonville Charitable Trust Lions Christmas Parade, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.

The parade, to be held on Saturday December 5, is the largest community-run Christmas parade in Wellington.

Entries have been steadily flowing in for several months, raising the spirits of the organising committee who were forced to cancel last year’s parade due to high winds.

Several members of the committee have been involved since the parade’s inception in 2000, when the Johnsonville Lions were first called on to assist.

One of these is Committee Chair, Richard Maddren.

“Initially, I was mainly involved in ensuring the bypass was cleared of parked cars and patrolling intersections when the parade was underway,” he says.

He now takes the lead on financial and traffic management matters, and has run the organising committee for the past six years.

“I have found it a challenging but rewarding task, and since we incorporated members of the public in the committee four years ago, their new ideas and input have improved the parade,” he says.

The cancellation of last year’s event was a bitter disappointment for everyone, including Richard.

“Unfortunately because of the time and expense involved in organising road closures, etc., it isn’t possible for us to postpone the parade to another date. We just have to cross our fingers and hope for the best.”

Committee member Ralph Gracie says he can’t remember exactly how long he’s been involved with the parade, “but looking back through my photo collection I’ve found one dated December 2007.”

Ralph brings a wealth of institutional knowledge to the organising committee, and loves how the parade brings so many diverse community groups together.

“I get a kick out of talking to families after the parade, hearing their excitment and appreciation for all the hard work that goes into it.”

Like Richard, Garth Mincher has been involved with every parade since its inception in 2000.

At the time, the Johnsonville Lions liaised directly with Wellington City Council on traffic management matters, with tasks such as notifying nearby residents, arranging traffic bypasses and erecting “no parking” signs along the route all being done by Lions

members such as Garth.

Although much of this burden has been removed with the employment of a traffic management company, Garth remains closely involved, this year by recruiting volunteers, marking out float start positions on Dr Taylor Terrace and helping to assemble floats.

“I have enjoyed being part of the team providing a unique event for the Johnsonville community,” he says.

The parade’s origins can be found in the Northern Wellington Festival that was instigated in 1993 by Ohariu’s former long-standing MP, Peter Dunne.

Designed to celebrate the diversity of the Northern Suburbs community, the festival, involving many community groups, included a talent show, a classic car parade, and a local fair. In its latter years, the Festival was held in early December, with the parade gradually becoming the dominant feature.

Peter played the elf on Santa’s float for 10 years, “but the elf has now retired,” he says.

The sheer number of people who attended the parade was always a highlight, and watching the faces of hundreds of children cheering and clapping.

“It was lots of fun. We just don’t do enough to celebrate who we are and our communities,” says Peter.

He credits the Johnsonville Lions Club as being a major factor in the parade’s success.

“The core of it was the Lions.

They were a fantastic group to work with.”

This year’s parade will kick off at Dr Taylor Terrace at 11am, travelling along Broderick Road, Johnsonville Road, Moorefield Road and Frankmoore Avenue.

Afterwards, a “meet and greet”

session with parade characters will be held at Johnsonville Memorial Park.

Confirmed participants include the police, fire service, brass band, Chips motorcycles, Harbour City Rock N Roll, Paw Patrol, Batman and friends, the Red Hackle pipe band and, of course, Santa. And there will be a special surprise for Roald Dahl fans too.

The parade route will be blocked off from 10.30am, and spectators are urged to get there early and leave the car at home if they can.

Khandallah residents star in new production Create a new company, select a beloved light opera, rehearse it under constant threat of Covid-19 lockdowns and then take it on a whirlwind North Island tour.

This is the premise of Wellington Light Opera’s production of Trial by Jury - an Operatic Vision by Cynthia Fortitude. Director Alison Hodge has incorporated the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta into a lively farce in which the newly formed company (whose long-form name has the unfortunate acronym of The LOCKJAWS) is beset by unforeseen challenges as they ready themselves for their first performance.

Khandallah residents Sam Fisher and Stephanie Gartrell both have key roles in the production. For Sam, it’s something of a departure from his usual theatrical activities.

“I’m mainly a writer, director and straight actor,” he says, “I did do some music hall with Riccarton Players in Christchurch but that was 10 years ago.”

Sam, who plays The Defendant, is intrigued by the way Alison has wrapped the opera

around with the story of the LOCKJAWS (the Light Opera Company of Khandallah, Johnsonville and Western Suburbs). “It’s like the prologue and epilogue in some of Shakespeare’s plays,” he says.

“And like some of those plays, Trial by Jury has a very silly plot but somehow it grips you anyway.”

Stephanie plays one of the singers who must change their role at the last minute. She too does a lot of straight acting (including with northern suburbs clubs Khandallah Arts Theatre and New Players) but musicals are where her heart is. “With musicals and opera I come home from rehearsal and some of the songs sung that night are earworms in my head - and that is what puts me in my happy place.”

She says she’s really enjoying this production. “The works of Gilbert and Sullivan have such clever lyrics.

director) work us hard and they are getting great results. Everybody sings well and seems to be naturally funny.”

A major contributor to the humour of the show is Helen Moulder, who plays the LOCKJAWS’ director, in her well-known comic role of Cynthia Fortitude. “Cynthia is my clown,” she says. “She’s quite ridiculous, with an over-inflated view of her own talent. She fits in perfectly with the LOCKJAWS.”

Selling for the best possible price? YIP! Hey Everyone! Hope you are enjoying the Wellington Summer. Thanks for all your interest in our landlord event - We have sadly filled up our venue, but we are looking to host more events. So, if you have missed out and would like to get updates, get in touch.

This week, I want to share with you two ways homeowners believe they can get the best possible price for their home. What they really mean is ‘net profit’ ie; how much money in hand they have after a sale.

We regularly come across two types of house-sellers: 1. People who believe that getting the most money in hand is about minimising costs, so they pick the cheapest real estate agent, and invest in the cheapest marketing possible, and spend nothing on presenting a property (as they believe buyers can see past it and they will get their own building / LIM report) 2. People who believe that getting the most money in hand is about maximising sale price, so they focus on the best possible process to get the best possible price. They ensure their property is well promoted across multiple channels (not just online), they invest in getting their property looking as best as possible and they hire a real estate agent that actually has the seller’s best interest at heart and our community of buyers love to deal with (people pay more buying from people they like) It is an interesting debate, and unfortunately you can’t go back in time and re-do it – But what you can think about are relatives in the process - Let’s say Agent 1 got you a sale price of $800k, what would you have got with Agent 2 if you did more marketing, presented your property

beautifully and you had an agent that was looking after your best interest and had exceptional rapport with the community and buyers? There is simply no argument that your sale price would have been higher.

By doing more you will get more for your property. So, avoid the “what if” and sell with no regrets!

Sadly, with real estate, most companies do not incentivise their agents to get a premium price. Getting $20k more for the seller, may only be a few hundred more for the agent. So, before you gamble with your biggest asset, focus on the tangible selling process, not agent promises. The best possible process will get you the best possible price.

NZSO to perform spectacular music with star conductor and pianist

Internationally renowned conductor and former Samuel Marsden Collegiate student, Gemma New will lead the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra for its highly anticipated Spectacular concerts in Wellington and Auckland in November.

Gemma, hailed in the United States as “one of the brightest rising stars in the conducting firmament”, will be joined by fellow New Zealander, acclaimed pianist Stephen De Pledge, for the performances on 20 and 21 November.

Gemma made her online NZSO debut in August, conducting the Orchestra in Wellington under Covid-19 restrictions.

The concert Passion was live-streamed to the nation. New also conducted the NZSO Shed Series concert Cadence, which was streamed in three parts.

Critic Peter Mechen hailed New’s NZSO debut as a “stirring achievement”.

Gemma is the Resident Conductor of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, Music Director of the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra, Principal Guest Conductor of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Music Director of the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra in Canada.

“To be able to share music performed live... is a special gift that gives us a bit of joy at this difficult time,” Gemma says on her NZSO debut.

GARDENING THIS WEEK Lawn pest insect problems: By Wally Richards There are three insect pests that are the main problem ones in lawns; grass grubs, porina and black beetle grubs. The affect they have on your lawns depends on the number of the pests in a given area. A few, will hardly be noticed, where a good number per square foot will damage the grasses and be easy to see. Damage can be seen by bare spots, brown, dead areas or discoloured grasses.

Birds are a very good indicator that there are grubs in the lawn when they spend their time scratching and pecking in certain areas.

If there are dead areas which have appeared in the spring or early summer then it is likely that grass grubs did cause the problem by eating the roots of the grasses in the autumn and into the winter.

The grasses would have appeared ok in the winter, even though they had little root system left, because they were not actively growing.

In the spring when they started to grow on the root system left, which was insufficient to support the grass, thus it browns off and dies. In the meantime the grubs have burrowed deep into the soil to pupate and then emerge about October to December as beetles.

There may well be a few grass grubs in the lawn at this time and by lifting some turf you can soon find out and how many there are per square foot.

If there are a few like 1 to 5 then it’s hardly worth while bothering

with a treatment, a greater number would be worthwhile to treat.

Most likely the reason the birds are working the lawn is for porina caterpillars which also live in the soil. Porina come up in the early part of the evening to feed at the base of the grasses.

These are easy to control by firstly mowing the lawn to allow the spray you are going to use to reach the base of the grasses where they feed. Then in late afternoon mix Wallys Super Neem Tree Oil at the rate of 5mils per litre of warm water and apply that to your lawn area. Using a lawn boy will do the best job to get a good coverage.

For spraying you are looking to get the spray to the base of the blades of grass where the grubs are going to fed. That night when the grubs come up to feed they will get a dose of Neem and that turns off their ability to ever eat again.

If the birds eat them they will not be affected and worms in the soil will be ok too.

The time to treat for grass grubs in the lawns is in the autumn when the soil is moist and they are feeding near the surface. The other time is when they are beetles, which is about now. With porina they can be treated all year round whenever they are present. Treatment for grass grubs and black beetle grubs can either be a strong chemical one or a safe natural one such as Wallys 3 in 1 for lawns

which is a mix of Eucalyptus and Tea Tree oils. This will not harm wild life, pets or worms, where the chemical ones will.

You can set up a grass grub beetle trap by placing a trough, such as the one used when wall-papering, directly underneath a window facing a lawn area. Fill the trough with water to about two-thirds of its capacity, then place a film of kerosene on top of the water.

Put a bright light in the window, the beetles will fly towards the lit window, hit the glass and fall into the trough.

The kerosene acts as a trap, preventing the fallen beetles from climbing out.

You can extend this method to areas away from the house by

using a glass tank, such as might be used for an aquarium. Place the empty tank into a tray containing several inches of water (and the kerosene), and position a light inside the glass tank.

By adding a sheet of ply or something similar over the top of the tank, you will ensure that the light shines only through the sides of the tank above the waiting water and kerosene.

It is better to use a dome-shaped battery-powered light rather than an ordinary torch for this job as the bigger light makes the trap more effective. If the tray and tank are raised off the ground and placed on something like a table, you will get an even better result.

trap, this is a very good method to dispose of the pests. Simply get rid of all the beetles caught the next morning by flushing down the toilet or feeding to chooks. Run this system (call it Wally’s Grass Grub Beetle Catcher, if you like) from just before dusk to about 2 or 3 hours after sunset. If you see lots of the brown beetles then mix up a spray of the Neem tree Oil with Wallys Super Pyrethrum added and go out and spray the pests.

The pyrethrum is a quick knock down and should wipe out good numbers of them.

The more beetles you can kill means less damage to your lawns next year.

Calming the traffic

New traffic calming measures have been put in place with the installation of speed cushions on Cashmere Avenue near Delhi Cresent Kahandalla.

Residents had been finding it difficult to cross the road, during school peak hours, due to the volume and speed of vehicles and the limited sight-lines and resident Sally Wills decided something needed to be done.

In 2016, Council had installed traffic calming signs but there were still concerns about the road and its safety.

After consulting with local residents and stakeholders, there was a resounding yes to install better safety measures for residents, pedestrians and road users.

“My daughter was at Onslow Kindergarten here for two years and it is a blind corner and you were risking your life just hoping a car wouldn't come past when you are crossing and especially in the morning as it is a main route into the city,” Sally says.

It took abut two years of working with council to finally get the speed cushions installed.

“It was extremely frustrating at times and I felt I had to just keep pushing it or nothing would happen and I feel quite proud to have it done because the community has been trying for about ten years to have something put in place,” To get the cushions installed Sally knocked on every single door in the area and went to the council with a petition and a plan of what needed to be done.

Third time lucky for Blue Dragon Book Fair

At Karori Cemetery in Wellington a damaged grave was repaired.

Veterans graves in Karori receive TLC Veterans’ Affairs has spent more than $62,500 this year on maintenance work in three cemeteries in Wellington.

The work was carried out at Taita Lawn Cemetery, where 504 damaged headstone bases were repaired and replaced, Whenua Tapu Cemetery, where a new entrance, paving, flag pole, seat, and sign were provided, and Karori Cemetery, where a damaged grave was repaired.

The money is part of more than $650,000 Veterans’ Affairs has spent overall this year on memorials and maintenance work in cemeteries where New Zealand service people are interred, which has included installation of nearly 700 new headstones and plaques for veterans, their spouses or partners throughout New Zealand.

More than $480,000 has been paid from the Veterans’ Affairs memorial fund towards headstones and plaques for veterans with qualifying service. A further $170,000 from its capital works fund has gone towards constructing new berms, installing new seating, and re-fixing or replacing damaged headstones in cemeteries across New Zealand.

Some of the work has been significant, like replacing 44 terrazzo headstones in Wairarapa. Other

projects have been smaller, such as repairing damaged berms in Waipawa.

Veterans’ Affairs is funded to support local authorities to maintain each of New Zealand’s 183 services cemeteries, where areas are set aside for the burial of veterans with qualifying service and their spouses or partners.

Deputy Head of Veterans’ Affairs Marti Eller said services cemeteries offer a great way for communities to engage with their history.

“At Veterans’ Affairs we honour service and it’s a privilege to be able to make this particular contribution to communities throughout the country,” Ms Eller said.

“Caring for services cemeteries is a massive undertaking. The work we do would not be possible without the support of local councils, the RNZRSA, and community groups like the NZ Remembrance Army.

“These cemeteries are often gathering places on Anzac Day and Armistice Day, so fixing small things like berms can make the world of difference to the families and whānau who come to pay their respects to those resting there. It’s a way we can play a part in helping communities remember their veterans.”

Third time will hopefully be the charm for the Blue Dragon Book Fair in 2020.

After two postponements due to the impact of Coronavirus, the annual event will be held at the Ngaio Town Hall on Saturday November 21 from 9am to 4pm and for the first time they will run on Sunday from 9am to 1pm.

“We just have so many books and stock to sell that we’ve actually had to turn people away because our storage is just jammed,” organiser Sue Chamberlain says.

It continues a rise in popularity of the event in recent years.

“With books on the rise, we really thought this event might be winding down but our sales that we have had have kept increasing,” she says.

“People still seem to want to

feel a book in their hands and it has been a great fundraiser for us.

The event has raised $9000 each of the past couple of years.

“We get really good quality books, in good conditions and we get a good range.

“People come from a long way to come for a book fair and we do have people who mark it on their calendars.

“The room is buzzing most of the day and people are always keen to find a bargain.

Iona McNaughton began organising this annual book fair in 1998 to raise funds for several charities. Since 2009 all funds have been for the Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation in Vietnam.

Blue Dragon’s purpose is to provide exceptional care to Vietnamese children and families in crisis while creating long-term

change for a better world. Blue Dragon kids are street kids, children with disabilities, children from rural families living in extreme poverty, and victims of human trafficking and slavery.

Prices at the book fair are very affordable - just $1-$3 per book.

But funds raised go a long way in Vietnam.

A hot meal for a child costs $1.30 while education and training for a day costs $1.45.

“We have a really good reputation for top quality books - most of our books have only been pre-loved once. And we have a tremendous number and range of books - the hall is filled with tables of books. We also sell children’s books, puzzles, DVDs and CDs.” Eftpos will be available at the book fair and a coffee cart will be on site.

Wairarapa’s tourism and hospitality sector is in for a bumper weekend with a feast of events expected to attract thousands of visitors.

Hotels, motels and other accommodation providers will be at near capacity starting Friday, particularly in South Wairarapa, as visitors flock to the region for what has been dubbed “The Big Weekend”.

Much of the activity leverages off the cancellation of Toast Martinborough, traditionally a big windfall for the region in the middle weekend of November.

The Big Weekend will see more than half a dozen Martinborough vineyards and cellar doors hosting events, including live music. In addition, Featherston is hosting a Booktown event with an artisan food fair, Gladstone the annual Scarecrow Big Day Out and a circus event is coming to Carterton.

It continues the strong performance of tourism in Wairarapa post the covid lockdown with Wairarapa leading the country in visitor spend growth.

“As a region, we have a lot in our favour; there are so many things for people to do when they visit, and our proximity to Wellington makes us very accessible,” Destination Wairarapa General Manager Anna Nielson says says.

“The upcoming Big Weekend is a demonstration of the pulling power the Wairarapa has. We know from accommodation bookings for Toast Martinborough that people were coming from all over the country. Although

Wings Over Wairarapa an aerial extravaganza

Wings Over Wairarapa Air Festival fans are being encouraged to get in quick to secure early bird ticket deals for the 2021 show.

Scheduled for the weekend of 26-28 February next year at the Hood Aerodrome in Masterton, the biennial show is anticipated to attracted big interest. It will be first significant air show event in New Zealand for two years, following the forced cancellation of Warbirds Over Wanaka because of Covid-19 earlier this year.

Early bird tickets for the 3-day aerial extravaganza can be purchased up until the end of November.

Ticket offerings include General Admission for individual days or a 3-day General Admission, plus a Family ticket option. Prices range from $40 to $140 for an adult; with family deals; 3 day and Gold Pass options available.

Seniors Week underway in Wellington Seniors’ Week is underway with over 60 events and activities designed to build connections, encourage movement, and reduce isolation for the older members of our community.

The 60 events and activities happening around the capital range from a ukulele jam, spin poi classes, a tour of Government House, healthy kai cooking classes, and how to chair dance – most of which are free with a gold card.

Video call support is a new addition to the programme, with one-on-one training on how to stay in touch with loved ones through programmes like Zoom. This is a sign of the times says Mayor Andy Foster.

“One of the many challenges during COVID-19 alert level lockdowns was ensuring our vulnerable older community members had access to support and information – especially when so much of it is

online.

“Providing seniors with the skills and tools to access the many online resources and to stay in touch with distant whānau is crucial in these uncertain times. Seniors’ Week is a brilliant opportunity to enjoy new experiences and lifelong learning.”

Maintaining an active lifestyle is important for enjoying good health and mental wellbeing, so this event couldn’t come at a better time, says Seniors portfolio lead, Councillor Rebecca Matthews.

“This year has really highlighted the importance of being connected, active, and being able to communicate with friends, whānau, and neighbours for our physical, mental and emotional well-being.

“With so many events and activities happening around the city this Seniors’ Week, there is really something for everybody to get out and about and do, build relationships, build confidence, and most

Johnsonville claim Sevens Bowl final

The Johnsonville rugby sevens team won the Bowl final at the Wellington Ambassadors Tournament at Onepoto.

Johnsonville beat Stoke’s Valley 32-12 in the final after playing an expansive style of play and staying away from the collision areas of the game.

They started the tournament with good win over 22-17 over Marist St Pats.

Both Mark Sutton and Nial Delahunt featured prominently.

The second game up featured a match-up against eventual Cup winners, Norths and resulted in a loss 36-5.

Turnovers proved costly for Johnsonville.

There were strong games by Jacob Walmsley, Pj Sheck and Ha”amea Ahio.

Melbourne Cup deaths at unacceptable rate There must be serious questions asked as to why so many horses are dying in the Melbourne Cup in recent years.

Now, before I go further, I must out myself as a horse racing fan.

I love the sport, have done since I was a child and I believe it is an important industry for any economy.

However, the death rate in Australasia’s greatest two mile gallops race in recent years is unacceptable.

Anthony Van Dyck is the sixth horse to die after taking part in the Melbourne Cup since 2013, on Tuesday.

It has been widely noted that most of the

casualties had been bred and trained in other countries. Fatal leg injuries were sustained by France’s Verema in 2013 and Britain’s Red Cadeaux in 2015. Cliffs Of Moher, from the same Irish stable as Anthony Van Dyck, that of Aidan O’Brien, broke a shoulder in 2018.

Japan’s Admire Rakti collapsed and died after the 2014 race. Araldo, who sustained a leg injury after that race when spooked by a flag-waving spectator, had been trained in Australia for more than a year before his death but is sometimes referred to as a British horse.

Dulcify in 1979 is believed to be the last Australasian-bred runner to die in the race.

A Racing Victoria spokesman said a report into Anthony Van Dyck’s death would take several weeks to complete and would include the results of a post-mortem..

More must be done from all areas of the racing fraternity to stop what is now becoming a common occurrence.

The weight these horses must carry needs to be looked at, as does the punishing nature of a two mile race in 2020.

Anthony Van Dyck was winner of more than £2m in prize money in the UK before setting his sights on the Melbourne Cup. His death also curtailed a sure-fire stud career for both the horse and connections.

Kerrin McEvoy was also fined $50,000 and banned for 13 meetings for excessive whipping on race favourite and runner-up, Tiger Moth.

I firmly believe these horses love to run, race and win but a death of a horse for the financial gain of humans is an absolute waste.

Racing Victoria has an issue with how the great race is currently run.

Whether it’s weights, track preparation, jockey behaviour or something else, the time for action is now.

Deaths of horses on the biggest day in racing, when so many watching only do so one day of the year, is a black eye on the sport.
