Greater Wellington Regional Council is today, Thursday December 12, considering an action plan of key fixes to the bus network. “We won’t be changing everything at once, we’ve

certainly learnt that lesson,” says GWRC chair Daran Ponter. “Over time, customers will see fewer transfers, access to key destinations, and an improved network that grows

$25m for Onslow College By Glenise Dreaver

A very audible gasp rose in the hall of Onslow College on Thursday morning as students, staff and board members alike heard some good news from Education Minister Chris Hipkins. They were told that the school will receive $25m for a major rebuilding programme. The announcement was followed by sustained applause. Some of the funds will enable the building of 20 new classrooms for more than 400 extra students to cope with population growth. Decades-old prefab classrooms, all seven a temporary “fix” so long ago no-one can remember when, will also be replaced. “Well and truly past their use-by date,” the Minister said. He had been ceremonially welcomed to the school by a powhiri, with Apinui Williams the school’s kaumatua and member of their Board of Trustees, officially welcoming him. Despite the good news, t he Minister offered apologies in advance. “It’s going to be incredibly disruptive,” he acknowledged, adding “Stick with it! It’s going to be worth it!” He acknowledged the principal

That will, the spokesperson says, continue to be offered in the current location while they seek a suitable agency partner to provide these services on their behalf. The assurance is in the wake of K i w i b a n k ’s a n n o u n c e m e n t o f closure on January 29 2020.

Lightning strikes In the 24 hours leading up to 7am on Sunday morning, 109,000 lightning strikes were recorded over New Zealand and surrounding waters, with 18,000 specifically over the land. Previously Met Service records had only seen 44,000 strikes over both land and sea. The office adds that the thunderstorms can bring locaiised flooding and downpours such as those which caused disruptions to travel at the weekend.

and he’s kept on doing that for two years,” he said. The school last week had also received notice of a capped $400,000 one-off maintenance

grant. That is part of a $400m nation-wide package enabling schools to undertake ongoing maintenance (Independent Herald December 5, 2019, p.3).

Question mark over future of Newlands brigade Fire and Emergency New Zealand is consulting on the future of the Newlands Fire Station - and about relocating its volunteer brigade to Johnsonville. Wellington City Council has decided to redevelop their site as part of Newlands Park. Fire and Emergency leases the council land on a month-by-month basis and

that arrangement will end by August 2020. The Newlands Volunteer Brigade, the Johnsonville Brigade (combining career and volunteer personnel), the United Fire Brigades Association (UFBA) and the New Zealand Professional Firefighters Union (NZPFU) will all be involved. Fire and Emergency Te

Upoko regional manager Bruce Stubbs says that at this stage, their preferred option is to co-locate the Newlands Brigade at the Johnsonville station. He adds that is less than 2km from the Newlands station, adding that Johnsonville firefighters already respond to many incidents in the Newlands area.

Ph: 04 213 5355

Br uce says the other options are the disestablishment of the Newlands brigade or relocation to an interim site while a new station was built on a different site. They had investigated other sites but none had cover over and above what was already achieved from Johnsonville, he said. Fire and emergency must arrive at incidents within eight minutes of being called out 90 per cent of the time.

“Therefore if there was not currently a station at Newlands, it is highly unlikely that we would build one there.” Bruce adds that co-location would preserve the Newlands Brigade as a separate entity and maintain an additional resilience and surge capacity within Greater Wellington. Feedback on the consultation closes on February 3 2020. Greg O’Connor, MP for

Ohariu, isn’t impressed however and is writing to the Minister of Internal Affairs and to FENZ, requesting a meeting to look at keeping the brigade based on the eastern side of SH1. “Newlands and the surrounding area is experiencing significant population growth, forecast to continue for several decades, so it is important to ensure that emergency services are maintained for this community,” he says.

Wellington rail upgrades of $196m begun Transport Minister Phil Twyford on Monday announced construction has already begun on Wellington commuter rail upgrades, aiming for more frequent services and fewer breakdowns. The upgrades are funded with $193 million through the Transport Agency and $3 million from the Greater Wellington Regional Council. Double tracking the 2.7km of line between Trentham and Upper Hutt, talked about

since the 1950s, means that a major bottleneck where commuter services and freight trains interact, will be dealt with. The upgrades will help freight services to keep on time despite increased passenger services. The Minister says: “Improved reliability and more services will benefit the 20,000 Wellington commuters who take the train every weekday and encourage even more to get on board. He says there will also be

upgrades for the Wairarapa line as without them, the line would have deteriorated with more and more disruptions to services. “Not only does this help reduce emissions by getting cars off the road, it helps to ease congestion - which boosts the region’s productivity by $290 million every year.” He said the Government is getting rail back on track after years of neglect.

Sardines for breakfast anyone? By Glenise Dreaver

Greater Wellington Regional Council is lobbying for Government support for new hybrid trains. Journalists were, on Monday, sent a “hard copy” of their report: ‘Lower North Island longer-distance rolling stock business case’. That’s unusual. Most media releases these days refer the journalist to an on-line link, confident they will read and re-read it on a

computer screen, or print if off (in this case 75 pages plus) at the expense of their employer. Monday’s “hard copy” report had an attachment that involved almost all the senses. It wasn’t just able to be seen and touched, it could be smelt. And tasted. (If you wanted to.) You couldn’t hear it, but four of the five senses is pretty good. It’s not every day a journalist, or Mayor, or MP, gets a tin of sardines in a courier

pack along with reading material. The package is to reinforce the message that without Government support for hybrid trains, passengers in the lower North Island will, by 2025, be packed in like sardines. That forecast is based on the latest census data, showing regional population growth has increased by 35,000. Following the online gathering of the 2018 census information, significant

issues were identified about participation rates, but let’s not go there… organisations have to use what they have got. And full marks to GWRC for providing material that can be easily read and re-read, marked up and “owned” by any readers. The $415m business case is to replace trains to Masterton and Palmerston North with fifteen units running on electricity, at least as far as Waikanae and Upper Hutt.

Journalists, government ministers and Mayor Andy Foster were sent a strong message from GWRC about acting to prevent rail customers being packed in like sardines on some lines. (Sadly Johnsonville commuters weren't mentioned.) PHOTO: Glenise Dreaver.

Medal for a local hero By Glenise Dreaver

On Monday December 2, Kirsty McLaren of Grenada Village was one of 28 Wellington Local Heroes honoured at Parliament for their services to the community The Kiwibank Local Heroes medal ceremony was part of the 2020 New Zealander of the Year Awards. And thirty-seven-year-old Kirsty, with many years of volunteering with multiple organisations made it a family trifecta, with her father Peter McLaren having received the same award in 2018 and her husband Gary Mitchell in 2017. She says she started her volunteer work in her later years at Wellington Girls’ College when they lived in Karori. “It’s just a family value really,” she says, adding that since her two children, now aged seven and four, were born, her volunteer work has been scaled back a bit. Five years ago, she and a business partner took over her father’s recruitment company McLaren Associates Limited, which works with a number of not-for-profit organisations and many of those are the groups that Kirsty also works with voluntarily. She has raised thousands of dollars for many charitable

organisations including T he Sa lvat ion A r my, Mary Potter Hospice and the Wellington SPCA. Last Friday, when the Independent Herald spoke to her, she was ready to go out on Lambton Quay to collect for the Wellington City Mission. Community and Voluntary Sector Minister Poto Williams was the host who presented the medals and congratulated each recipient, along with Wellington City Council Deputy Mayor

Sarah Free. “Each and every award winner tonight embodies the priceless qualities that hold a community together,” he said. Their charity, selflessness and humble generosity shone brightly he added. Nationwide, 326 medals are being presented, with one New Zealand Local Hero of the Year announced at the New Zealander of the Year Awards in February 2020.

Music festival a “three-day dance odyssey” A multi-day music and arts festival unparalleled in Wairarapa will be held at the picturesque Tauherenikau Racecourse in South Wairarapa, March 13-15 next year. Dubbed a “three-day dance odyssey”, the 121 Festival will feature top tier international, emerging and heritage musicians and artists across multiple stages playing house, techno, dub, roots, soul, funk, rock, and hip hop. The line-up is stacked with international headlining talent such as The Black Madonna, Nina Kraviz, Ben UFO, Richie Hawtin and flourishes of New Zealand local bands including The Black Seeds. (Full line-up below). The festival is the brainchild of 121, a Wellington-based entertainment company. The diversity of musicians and artists coupled with the stunning venue at Tauherenikau have all the ingredients to make 121 Festival an “incredible experience”, co-founder Olly de Salis says. “We are really focused on creating an opportunity for people to come and connect, dance, and get inspired.

YIP ‘Second to none’ Service Real Estate Extraordinaire William YIP of Harcourts always aims to put his clients first, in a business model which ensures quality service to achieve a fantastic sale result. Often Real Estate Agents sign up a client and leave them to do everything themselves, and only start working when the sign goes up. “We start working for our clients way before they are thinking of selling,” William said. His aim is to ensure no client undersells their biggest asset. “To achieve this, we provide the most comprehensive strategy that doesn’t cut any corners,” he said. That way when an offer comes in, you know you’ve covered everything and that is the best possible price.” He said even once his clients’ houses are sold, his post-market support is ‘second to none’. “We will help you with your relocation, recycle any excess furnishings to local charities, sell any items on your behalf, and rubbish removal is always free.” William YIP’s team has also been running their own community grants for the last two years and have donated significant time, money and support to the local community. William said his team believes in ‘no regrets’ and in doing the best possible job in preparation and marketing, you will get the best possible price in the market. so when they get an offer they know no corners have been cut in the process. “Choosing to work with a comprehensive team like us is your insurance against underselling your biggest asset. Plus it will be easier for you and you will also be supporting the local community as well.”

SUMMER SUMMER HOLIDAY SUMMER HOLIDAY PROGRAMME SUMMER HOLIDAY Believe in the Black Caps HOLIDAY PROGRAMME PROGRAMME PROGRAMME once again 27 – 31 JANUARY 2020 With Jacob Page

27 – 31 JANUARY 2020

AT ALEX MOORE PARK, JOHNSONVILLE

27 – 31 JANUARY 2020 JoinJANUARY us for a fun-filled School Holiday Programme. 27 – 31 2020

If the Black Caps are to earn a test series win in Australia over the holiday period, they must be aggressive. This team, currently ranked No 2 in the world behind India is strong, particularly by our standards as battlers who wait for their day in the sun. Kane Williamson’s men must not be intimidated and must not be satisfied with merely showing up, showing some fight but eventually rolling over. The Black Caps team has flaws, Jeet Raval could not hit a barn door during a day on a farm at this point and Mitchell Santner is not

the attacking spinner needed for Aussie pitches. However, these Aussies are beatable too. They have a specialist captain in Tim Paine, their middle-order is frail once you get past David Warner, Steve Smith and Marnus Labuachagne. Plus, Mitchell Starc’s tricky foot issues may also be playing up. Openers Raval and Tom Latham must see-off the new ball and the Aussie pace attack and Williamson must have an attacking mindset, especially in the field to try to put pressure on the hosts. None of this Black Caps team

has ever played a test match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground like they will on Boxing Day. It’s a tall task but this group of players has achieved enough history over the past five years, that another accomplishment would not be shocking. Neil Wagner could be another key. His lion-hearted efforts with the older ball ensure New Zealand has a wicket taker bowling at all times. This team has a fan base which believes they can win, half the battle of playing in Australia is the mental hurdle. If they believe, they can win.

Twice lucky at Ohariu Golf Club It was drinks all round at the Ohariu Golf Club’s weekly club day last Wednesday. Twice. Long term members Bob Sutton and Ian Gemmill both scored a

hole in one. And both scored it on the sixteenth hole. Club president Steve Henderson, who reported the double, says their club is a well-kept secret, with many people not realising they are

there. “We’re just ten minutes from Johnsonville down Ohariu Road. And we’re open to the public.” So anyone wanting to try their luck on the lucky sixteenth might just like to try a visit to see how they go.
