CAB’s new battle By Glenise Dreaver

The Citizens Advice Bureau of New Zealand (CAB) is this year celebrating 50 years of providing information and advice in New Zealand. And, says the Johnsonville CAB’s service manager Ken Gurney, that work is all done by volunteers. “Our people are right on the frontline

of helping people access their rights and entitlements,” he says. “It’s our core service.” Recently, he says, CAB has, both here and at national level, noted an increasing number of distressed clients not being given the help they need from private organisations and government departments. Continued on page 2.

Fifty years on front line of need Continued from page 1. Instead, there has been a pattern of clients asking for help being redirected to websites as the organisations strive for ‘digital transformation’. And this, says Ken is not an answer. “It’s called digital exclusion and it means that our most vulnerable people and communities are being left out from the advice and help they need.” Migrant communities, peo-

ple with English as a second language, ethnic communities, those who cannot afford to buy computers, and people unfamiliar with fast-changing technology are just some of those excluded. CAB, at national level, decided to measure the additional work that was coming in. The resulting report ‘Face to face with digital exclusion’ came out in February. From September 2019 to November 30 2019, 4379 clients

nationwide were classified as digitally excluded, with a range of reasons for that. Ken says it’s not just older people who feel frustrated, excluded and depressed by the digital focus. Their survey shows youth does not guarantee inclusion either. CAB volunteers are having to fill the gaps for people, providing a human voice and a person-toperson service. Ken points out that government

funding is totally inadequate for the extra stresses being put on the CAB. To help prove the point, he recently invited a member from one government department to observe their work for a morning. “He couldn’t believe the range of enquiries we have to cover,” says Ken. More money is specifically needed to help clients with the digital exclusion issue – that means keeping up

Makara’s sacrifices to be recalled Pat Grace of Makara says their community will again commemorate Anzac Day with a service at the Makara War Memorial. The community has been holding a commemorative service for the past 12 years, attended by between 150 -200 people. Wreaths are laid in honour of those men from Makara who fell during the First and Second World Wars. Seven Makara men lost their lives in World War 1, says Pat. John Howard Jervis was the first local man to die, on August 9 1915. “Harry Monaghan died of wounds on August 1 1917 and Louis Sievers was killed in action on November 30 1917. “John Bryant was killed in action on February 8 1918,” says Pat “William Ramsey was killed in action on May 4 1918 and Karl Pedersen,

milk vendor, the only local man who was not a farmer, died of wounds on June 8 1918.” Arthur Trotter was killed in action on November 4 1918. In World War II one Makara man lost his life, again near the end of the war. That was Jack Nielsen, farmer, killed in action on June 25 1945. The names of those men appear on the community’s War Memorial, which adjoins a small remembrance garden maintained by a local resident. The service, on the corner of Makara and South Makara roads, will be at 10am on Saturday 25 April and will be followed by a morning tea provided by Makara residents. Summit challenge locals in massive effort

By Glenise Dreaver

You might remember Ladder Man. He was on the front page of the Independent Herald on February 20, 2019. Iain (Possum) Richardson of Paparangi had what he soon realised was a “very stupid” idea, carrying a ladder to the top of Tarikaka (better known to locals as Mt Kaukau). He used it to scale the trig station, adding two metres and reaching exactly 8848m, the height of Mt Everest. Despite being black and blue, he completed his odyssey for the Himalayan Trust Summit Challenge, raising funds to support the Himalayan communities in Nepal. The month-long challenge is on again, and this time there is no ladder. Possum, three friends

and a small support team spent the weekend completing 37 laps up Tarikaka, climbing the height of Mt Everest in just under 33 hours. They started the climb together at 6am on Saturday, arriving at the top just in time to catch a glorious sunrise. Base camp was at the foot of Tarikaka, where they took turns in doing a “lap” while the other three rested. There was plenty to while away the time, with a sausage sizzle to raise extra funds, and the team taking turns on the ukulele. The night was a little more tranquil, with team members napping while others did double shifts up the mountain. With six laps after dark, Hannah Berttsmanaged 15 laps over the weekend (3600m), the largest number within the group. Exhausted and only

slightly sore, the team finished with a final lap together on Sunday afternoon, around 3pm. So far their fund-raising, including the weekend’s takings, is just over $1300. Team member Tom Hutton said: “We decided to take on the Summit Challenge because we share a love for the outdoors, helping other people, and for our maunga Tarikaka. “We’ve all been lucky enough to grow up here in Wellington, with access to quality education, clean water, and good healthcare. “But while Everest’s slopes are crawling with tourists achieving their goal of a lifetime, the local villagers don’t have the same privileges we take for granted.” Their team fundraising page is: summitchallenge2020. everydayhero.com/nz/tarikaka-8848

Togetherness Tour (Kotahitanga) By Brian Sheppard

Wellingtonians packed out the Johnsonville Community Centre on the evening of March 7 to mark the approaching anniversary of the March 15 massacre of 51 Muslims at their Christchurch mosques. The Al-Ameen Mosque in Newlands had organised an opportunity for local people to attend the Togetherness Tour – Kotahitanga, an exhibition and evening of short talks which is visiting twelve cities in New Zealand. Sheikh Khaled Said, from the Al-Ameen Mosque in Newlands, emphasised that its purpose is to create an opportunity for us to get to know each other better.

“We feel that it is important to bring our communities together, in view of the tragic events in Christchurch last year. “Through creating better understanding between communities, we can stop hate.” Al-Ameen organised this exhibition with the Voice of Islam and The Islamic Education and Research Academy from the UK. Addressing the crowd, the speakers acknowledged the forgiveness expressed by Kiwi Muslims after the massacre and the support offered by other Kiwis throughout the country. They saw these as models for the whole world to follow. Sheikh Khaled Said, Greg O’Connor, MP for Ohariu, and List MP Brett Hudson listen to Yusuf Chambers. Photo: Brian Sheppard.

World Day of Prayer

On Sunday March 15, a remembrance day event will be held on the one-year anniversary of the tragic events in Christchurch. It has been organised by the Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand (FIANZ), in association with Wellington City Council. The ‘Umah Day Exhibition’ will be held in the TSB Auditorium, Shed 6, between 10am-4pm. It will include an exhibition of posters and photos, plus a prayer service, lectures and presentations on Islam from all perspectives, especially Islam as a way of life. This event is designed to showcase the Islamic system and how it approaches various aspects and challenges in modern life. Also on Sunday, there will be an open day at the Kilbirnie Mosque from 10am-3pm. This includes guided tours of the mosque, ethnic food, a photo exhibition, and names done in Arabic calligraphy.

A World Day of Prayer service was held on Friday March 6 at Sts Peter and Paul’s Church, Johnsonville. Five local churches that took part were St Johns Anglican Parish of Johnsonville, Broderick Road Chapel, Sts Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Johnsonville Uniting Church and the Salvation Army Johnsonville. Intending customers at the ASB bank at Johnsonville Mal last Thursday afternoon found it in lockdown, after an aggravated robbery. The alleged offender was, however, found within ten minutes. Photo: Glenise Dreaver.

Prompt arrest in ASB robbery in mall A twenty-seven-year-old man was taken into custody following an aggravated robbery at the ASB bank in Johnsonville on Thursday afternoon. Detective Senior Sergeant Kevan Verry says thanks to the quick thinking of the bank staff, who notified Police immediately, the offender was found on a nearby street and arrested promptly. A man had entered the bank around 2.15pm, threatening the bank staff and demanding money. He was given cash and he fled on foot. Within ten minutes he had been arrested on street. The stolen cash was also recovered. “The bank staff should be commended for remaining calm throughout the incident

and following protocol ensuring no one was injured,” Detective Senior Sergeant Kevan Kerry said. He added that it was the professional way the bank staff reacted to this incident that resulted in the prompt response and the quick arrest.” “While incidents like this can have an impact on the victims and the community, we hope this arrest will reinforce our commitment to delivering what we always promised to do - keep the community safe.” A 27-year-old man appeared in Wellington District Court on Friday charged with aggravated robbery. As the matter is now before the court, Police cannot comment any further.

Governing the country in good times is relatively easy. It’s the tough times which require good leadership and Jacinda Ardern’s leadership on the Christchurch Mosque shootings, the Coronavirus, and now the economic fallout from the latter is quite outstanding from where I sit, a place which gives me a good insight into what’s happening.

brigade in Newlands. We’re waiting to hear from FENZ what the next step is. I’ll keep everyone informed.

I try not to get too political in these columns but the behaviour of the National Party over the Coronavirus has been quite outrageous as they try to scare New Zealanders unnecessarily, even encouraging panic buying, and talking down the economy.

Many are also holding their school fairs and galas before winter hits to both engender school spirit and to top up funds. I need to be careful I don’t get accused of hoarding jam as I seem to leave each one with at least one jar!

Jacinda’s attitude has been to ignore them and even to offer them briefings, something they never did for the opposition when they were in government. That’s true leadership.

Back at Parliament, we are introducing and processing plenty of legislation which means extra sittings, including the odd postmidnight session. The Select Committees involved do mean more time in Parliament itself but my office is still open and you’ll find me out and about at markets, cafes, and other places where people gather.

Locally we had an excellent turnout at the meeting on the Newlands Fire Brigade last week.

Meanwhile I’ve visited most of our schools this year and they are all gleefully planning how to invest the extra money they were given to catch up on the deferred maintenance forced on them over the last decade.

Greg O’Connor

There are always a lot of speeches and questions at such meetings, but the loudest statement of the night was the 300 people the newspaper reported were there. The turnout from the community spoke louder than any words to the FENZ management who attended, that the locals want their

Excuse me if I don’t offer a handshake as I think we politicians need to provide some leadership on such things as a precaution, in case the Coronavirus does begin spreading.

Thought of a career in real estate? Hey everyone, hope you all had a great week, we took the family out to catch on a few of the festivals happening and made the most of the great weather! This week, I got approached at the supermarket and got asked what it’s really like starting out in real estate. The industry is guilty of glamourising the job, with the perception of high pay, flexible hours, luxury lifestyle, etc – in order to attract a constant supply of new recruits. Typically, real estate companies are always hiring, and operate on a bums-on-seats model where you inherit all the risk in a self-employed, commission-based, competitive industry. This model, although a safe & profitable strategy for the company, is responsible for the high turnover of ‘new recruits’ in this industry. As a result of this the old ways of doing Real Estate have a bad reputation, and there is a common theme around the lack of service and the quality of customer experience. This is not surprising when agents qualify in a short time and are thrown into the marketplace with very basic training and who are typically supported by people who have gone through the same system. At Team YIP – Collective First National, anyone who wants to start in this industry must be focused on delivering an exceptional client experience and provide the best possible result for our clients. In order to achieve this the person will need to have the best possible process behind them. They will need support staff helping them with all the administration, comprehensive marketing channels, and a team to support their clients with preparing their property for market. Before salespeople can work for themselves,

they must complete a fully supported & fully paid, 1-year apprenticeship. New recruits can focus on doing what is right and focus on learning, helping, and upskilling rather than worrying about commission and how they are going to pay their bills. Once graduated from our programme, we can be confident they have the right foundation to live up to the Collective way of doing things. If you have been wondering about a career in real estate, our next intake is coming up! So that candidates get 1-on-1 support with the course material, mentoring on the job and focused training, we can only bring in a few people for each intake – so spaces are limited. Even if you don’t intend on working in this area or at our company - our 1-year programme is open to everyone. At the end of the 1-year programme, you have complete choice! Here we have no ego, no brand conflicts, we are simply doing this for the betterment of everyone. If you are keen to know more about how we can kick start your Real Estate Career in the best way possible, get in touch! Love to hear from you!

Brett’s Brief

Dogs’n’togs By Brian Sheppard

It’s getting a bit cool for outdoor swimming now. So the Khandallah pool will close for winter maintenance. Before it was drained, New Zealand Parks Week and the end of the swimming season is marked by hosting the annual and very popular Dogs ’n’ Togs party. Fun and safety go hand in hand

National Party List MP based in Ōhāriu

(or paw) and so the number of dogs was controlled by prior bookings. Lifeguards were on patrol and two dogs patrolled in their lifeguard uniforms before joining the party. Some dogs gingerly tested the water before deciding whether or not to go in while others dived in without a second thought. Getting out was a bit more

challenging. There was a floating ramp at the deep end but many scrambled up the side, often needing the help of their people, who were then rewarded by a vigorous shake of the soggy doggy. What a great day, and judging from the way that the party dogs gave their all to this event, their owners may have a peaceful evening.

Newlands Fire Brigade is important to the local community. The Wellington City Council is proposing to shut down the Newlands Fire Station to make way for public toilets. That’s not good enough.

I’ve started a petition to keep the Newlands station in Newlands, which you can add your name to here: bretthudson.national. org.nz/keep_newlands_fire_ station

If the Brigade is relocated to the Johnsonville station, they’ll be relegated to being a support act for all callouts in their own community. This isn’t the first time that we’ve had this issue. Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ), formerly the Fire Service, tried to close the Newlands Fire Station in 2003. Peter Dunne fought to keep it open and won.

Lifeguard James gives lifedog Ralph his instructions.

Now they’re trying again. That isn’t what the community wants, or needs. Northeast of Newlands lies a large housing growth opportunity for Wellington. Lincolnshire Farm will accommodate 10,000 homes, along with a significant commercial area. Where’s the sense in moving response capability further away from the area? There’s a lot of uncertainty around coronavirus and its impacts. It’s clear, however, that it will have significant economic impacts. The Government should be acting to protect jobs, instead of threatening them. People are better off remaining in work and we want businesses to be able to respond as conditions improve. In the meantime, I encourage you to heed Ministry of Health advice and take sound precautionary contact and hygiene measures that will help to limit the spread and health impacts.

Churton Park resident Brian Reeve says his Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) lets him tackle his recovery from serious heart problems with confidence. He says it has played a major part in getting him back to the outdoor life he has always enjoyed. “Thankfully I haven’t been shocked by my ICD, but I am continuously grateful that it is sitting there ready to save my life at any time should I need it,” he says. (An ICD is a small battery-powered device placed in the chest to continuously monitor a person’s heart rhythm and detect irregular heartbeats. It can deliver electrical pulses to restore a normal heart rhythm.)

Top 5 renovation tips! Although our job is to help you maximise the return on your property, we find that people often put non-financial reasons first. But if you are looking for max profit, here are 5 quick tips for maximising value. 1. Get it painted! Keep up with modern colour trends / what presents best. If in doubt always go for neutral colours. Not only does fresh paint add value, but also protects the home.

2. Find the garden balance! Keep it simple, tidy and easily maintained. Overgrown and poorly kept gardens will affect your value. 3. Potential price ceilings – Don’t over capitalise, we can help you work out where the optimum investment will be for your area. 4. Sweat the small things – Part of your renovation plan, look at small things such as loose handles, doors catching on the

Poorly renovated properties can negatively affect your vault – when selling buyers can easily spot a cheap renovation! Sometimes it can be tricky to know where to start. tions, from what to renovate, proper budgeting, to restrictions and compliance. Special shaped balloon Buster, a British bulldog, will be one of the star attractions at the Wairarapa Balloon Festival next month. All the way from Bristol, the happy-faced canine, continues the festival’s link to Old Blighty. Buster will be one of at least three specialshape balloons for the five-day festival over the Easter Weekend including a house and a van. In total, at least 16 balloons have been confirmed. Pilot and owner, Paul Burrows, says he is excited to be bringing Buster to the Wairarapa. Burrows has been flying hot air balloons since the age of 17 and was the youngest pilot in Europe when he completed his qualifications. He has flown some of the best-known shapes on the circuit, including the Kiwi Bird, the Little Girl and Little Boy, and at the time, the world’s largest pair of green underpants, which was part of a marketing campaign for an online bookmakers. This year marks the 21st birthday of the

popular annual show in Wairarapa, and the fourth consecutive year for Robyn Cherry-Campbell as event organiser. CherryCampbell says she will be bowing out at the end of the 2020 event. “I have loved every minute of being involved in the festival, and I’m really hoping that this one, my last, will be the best yet,” she says. The festival opens with a “mass ascension” from Queen Elizabeth Park in Masterton on Thursday 9 April, followed by early morning liftoffs in Carterton, Greytown and Martinborough over the following days. There will be numerous other free events throughout the festival day giving the public the chance to meet the pilots and walk through an inflated balloon envelope. The show piece of the festival will be the Night Show on Saturday 11 April at the Solway Showgrounds in Masterton, which in recent years has attracted crowds of up to 15,000 people. SPORTS TALK With Jacob Page

Changing times for cricket coverage These are changing times in the country for cricket. With Sky Television signing off it’s test match coverage earlier this month, the way New Zealand consumes its summer sport is about to change. As home cricket moves to Spark Sport from next summer, questions will be asked over the quality and look of the service. Their effort with last year’s Rugby World Cup was erratic

at best and there were many technical glitches. Sky’s service, while overpriced for many years, was reliable and world class for the most part. Cricket fans will not tolerate any teething issues with the coverage. The other big question is who will be the main face of the newlook summer. Long time cricket lead Ian Smith has chosen to stay with Sky where he has run the rugby

sidelines for many years. A bold presenter choice would be Brendon McCullum, a highly respected player who is relatable to the TV audience but also relatively new to commentary. Spark could lure Simon Doull, Craig Cumming or Mark Richardson to front it, all three would be a safe, but an unspectacular choice. The two filters could be Laura McGoldrick and Mark Nicholas.

McGoldrick has no actual cricket experience but is a familiar face to Kiwi viewers. Nicholas was the long-time cricket lead on Channel 9 in Australia and would be a respected international option. The split in the major sports has now happened and like any good arms race, both companies will be trying to impress with their respective trump cards. On a side note, New Zealand

Cricket is still yet to front on the axing of radio commentaries from Radio Sport. Chief executive David White should be ashamed of his handling of this situation. It is yet another in a long line of mediocre PR moves from the man in charge. His silence is a slap in the face to all cricket fans, especially those who rely on that form of coverage.

Second chance for orienteer By Glenise Dreaver

Orienteering Wellington is to host the New Zealand Orienteering Championships at Easter. The sprint section will be held at Palmerston North and longer distances along the Kapiti coast. One local name likely to feature on the medal board is environmental scientist Lizzie Ingham. The former Ngaio, Crofton Downs and Marsden College pupil says she attended her first orienteering meet on the way home from the hospital. Her mother Gillian, who competed at world level, had taken time out to have her second baby and the Wellington club happened to have a meet the day of her discharge. So it’s hardly surprising that Lizzie picked up the family commitment to orienteering – and winning – at international level. Most recently, she was on the finals board in the Oceania championships in October 2019, winning gold.

Lizzie was also third in the 2013 World Cup and has won multiple New Zealand championships titles.. She is pleased to be back racing after a major setback in 2017. For some time she hadn’t been at peak form, complaining of dizziness and collapses during racing. Then at a race in Norway, in July 2017, she collapsed after the finish line. It was bad. “CPR. Defibrillator.” She was raced into hospital in Oslo. The cause? “I’d been born with an artery in my heart in the wrong place.” Lizzie says she was “incredibly lucky” that they could solve the problems without a full bypass, so she can live free of medication. “Apart from an aspirin.” It has taken a while for her to get back to full strength and says she is very fortunate not just to be back running, but competing. “So I’ve achieved a lot. Not what I was aiming for when I went to Norway, but it’s good.”
