Karori’s Auroara Dale has a freezer full of boysenberry ice cream and a sweet tooth to match so when opportunity knocked at 4am to become Cadbury’s first ‘Boysenberry Ripple Expert’ she jumped at the chance.

“I was working night shift and I saw the ad pop up and I’d been telling my colleagues about how much I love boysenberry ripple and stories from my childhood and they encouraged me to apply.

“I never thought I’d make it but everything happened really quickly.”

Auroara, a police dispatcher, says her flatmates are “pretty cool” with the reality their home has a freezer full of ice cream but no television.

“It sits on the table where the TV should be,” she says.

“It’s exclusively mine, my flatmates know nothing else can be put in it.

“The maximum we’ve had in there is about 10 litres at any one time.

Auroara’s sweet tooth goes back to her childhood and her summers days at the beach.

“Honestly we used to go to our local scoop shop at the beach and we used to wait in line for 20 minutes only to be told they were out of boysenberry ripple which meant my parents had to drag me to another suburb just so I could get the scoop I wanted,” she says.

“My favourite thing is when you get a tub and you scoop the boysenberry centre.”

Auroara says Cadbury’s boysenberry ripple chocolate collaboration had exceeded her “very high” expectations.

“When I was younger I used to put chocolate sauce on top of my boysenberry ripple so for me, it was quite a nostalgic experience.”

She says she thinks the chocolate would go well frozen with the boysenberry jelly being hard and she was keen to try it.

Auroara Dale from Karori may have a fridge designated solely for boysenberry ice cream where a TV should be but she wouldn’t want it any other way.

Johnsonville Lions Club wins national award Johnsonville Lions Club has won the supreme award for best service project of all Lions Clubs in New Zealand for their fundraising efforts with the new Wellington Children’s Hospital.

Club president Colin Rhodes was presented with a certificate to acknowledge the Club.

New Zealand Lions Council Chairman Murray Pringle attended a local club meeting to present the award.

“Your community should rightly be proud of your club’s efforts to support the new Children’s Hospital,” he says.

“This award recognises your members’ efforts across a range of activities.

Raising funds to support the new Wellington Regional Children’s Hospital has been an ongoing major project for the Johnsonville Lions Club over three years.

When accepting the award, Colin highlighted that the Club raised $15,000 in support of the “Playscape” project, plus a further $10,000 to purchase two specialised paediatric beds for the new facility.

“I would like to acknowledge the support of our wider northern suburbs community,” Colin says.

“Our members cannot achieve such

things without the community behind us.”

All Johnsonville Lions members have been involved to ensure the success of this major project, which has included several fundraising activities.

Colin says the major funding contribution came from his Club’s regular fundraising barbecues outside the Countdown Supermarket in Johnsonville.

“We have no problems having Lions fill the rosters, despite some adverse weather at times,” Colin says.

“Knowing that our cause was for the Children’s Hospital, many customers donated additional funds.”

In addition to the sausage sales, a small committee jointly headed by Judy Marbeck and Sandra Gaelic ran a series of women’s Spring and Autumn fashion parades at Ballentynes.

Entry by pre-sold ticket was consistently sold-out, with club members strutting their stuff as models.

Fundraising Chairman, Jim Ng, had spearheaded two quiz nights at the local 1841 Bar and Restaurant which literally packed out the venue.

Such was the enthusiasm for the project’s cause that several winners donated their winnings straight back

Karori Rotary celebrating 40 years of community service The Rotary Club of Karori is celebrating 40 years of outstanding community service.

It was chartered by Rotary International in May 1982 and is one of 36,754 clubs, with over 1.2 million members, in 220 countries and territories around the world.

The Club has had many achievements serving the local Karori community and joining with other Rotary Clubs in New Zealand on humanitarian projects around this country and the Pacific and further afield internationally. In particular, it has strongly supported End

Like all Rotarians, Karori Club members epitomise the Rotary motto of “Service above Self” and translate service passion into relevant social causes to change lives and make lasting improvements, locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.

In this 40th year of service, the Club has an opportunity to reflect on and celebrate many activities and achievements. Here is one

In 1986, the Rotary Club of Karori established the Rotary Karori Marsden Community Trust and over the next 10 years it raised $186,000 to purchase the Newcombe Cres property in Karori from the Nursing Sisters of the Little Company of Mary, which established the Marsden Club in 1984 to help provide respite care for dementia patients.

In 1993, the Trust Chairman and past president of Karori Rotary, Eric Ashton, arranged for British actress, Stephanie Cole, (Aunty Joan in the Doc Martin series) to tour New Zealand with

her one woman plays by Alan Bennett, famed English actor and author. This tour raised $30,000 and helped Rotary complete the purchase of the Newcombe Cres property in 1996.

High schoolers shake things up at Wellington’s CRISiSLab High school students around the capital are shaking up their learning by creating their own earthquake alerts as part of this year’s CRISiSLab Challenge.

Funded by the Earthquake Commission (EQC) and hosted by CRISiSLab at Massey University, the challenge sees students work with a Raspberry Shake seismometer and live data generated to design a simple system that sends an alert when it detects ground motion activity.

Dr Marion Tan, leader of the CRISiSLab Challenge, says the competition, which starts on 16 May, aims to encourage more young people to step into a career in the STEM field.

“We need more young people in science and disaster management. They’re the next generation of scientists and the link between innovation and our future preparedness,” Dr Tan says.

Teams from schools in the Wellington region will be vying for top spot, with the winners to be awarded a summer internship with Massey’s CRISiSLab team.

Through the challenge, the students will not only test their knowledge in science and technology but also learn how to better communicate science in creative ways.

They will have the opportunity to engage with professionals from science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) backgrounds. CRISiSLab Team will be providing technical support along the way.

For Dr Tan, a highlight of last year’s inaugural challenge was watching the skills of students develop throughout the 10 weeks, with others showcasing real potential.

She mentions how the Challenge also helped one student pursue future study in technology which shows the impact of it.

Dr Tan says it is amazing to see what gets achieved during the challenge and to think what could be brought forward in the future of technology and earth sciences.

“Last year, students blew us away with their performance and ability to overcome difficulties through teamwork. We saw some innovative, effective and detailed earthquake alert systems – despite some students learning how to code for the first time during the challenge,” she explains.

“I got experience with sockets, web APIs, and so much more. I would totally recommend joining if you’re looking for a good challenge and a chance to learn more about web development,” Ben says.

“The challenge motivated me to try out lots of new technologies that I probably wouldn’t have used otherwise. It was an awesome experience and something I’ll never forget,” Zade says.

So far, includes Wellington College, Wellington High School, Wellington East Girls’ College, Taita College, Paraparaumu College, St Patrick’s College, St Mary’s College Wellington, and Te Kura MƗRri o Porirua. CRISiSLab Team are encouraging more students from girls’ colleges and Kura Kaupapa MƗori to participate.

EQC’s Chief Resilience and Research Officer, Dr Jo Horrocks says that giving our young people exposure, experience, and the opportunity to learn about the technology behind our sciences opens the door to a world they may not have thought about yet.

“We’re excited to support such an important initiative that gives our young students access to some of New Zealand’s most renowned seismic experts. I’m looking forward to seeing what the students come up with this year,” says Dr Horrocks.

Enviro Kiwis at Newlands Primary School Term 2 Inquiry at Newlands Primary School is all about sustainability and reducing the impact on the environment.

With that in mind, Newlands Primary School students turned into Enviro Kiwis.

The whole school got involved in cleaning up the school grounds, as well as at the neighbouring Pukehuia Park in their role as kaitiaki.

The day started with a meeting in the school hall to discuss the collective goal of cleaning up, and learning about how they can reduce waste.

The three syndicates split up the different tasks - Te .Ɨkano and Te Pihi

Syndicates (Year 0-4) picked up rubbish in school grounds, and Te KǀKuri Syndicate (Y5-6) cleaned up Pukehuia Park, as well as Roberts Road and the section of Newlands Road in front of the school.

Rubbish was then brought back to the school hall and placed on a large tarpaulin where it was sorted for recycling so it could be put into appropriate bins.

Everyone was amazed by how much rubbish they found, and classes will now spend the rest of the term planning actions to improve how they all look after our school and local community for the future.

I’d go to Bellagio on the shores of Lake Como, Italy - reason - it just showed up on my computer screen. Apparently it’s a haunt for the rich and famous - so I’d be completely unnoticed....

Updated plan for greening Wellington city to be voted on Today, the Wellington City Council will consider a 30-year plan for improving or creating new green spaces across the central city as more people want to call central Wellington home.

Greening the inner city is one way of supporting peoples’ well-being and our native environment while addressing climate change.

The Green Network Plan and implementation framework is the result of overwhelming feedback heard during the draft Spatial Plan consultation says Mayor Andy Foster.

“We’ve received strong community feedback over many years about the importance of greening our Central City, especially with a rapid increase in the number of people attracted to live in, work in and visit downtown Wellington.

“We’ve analysed the amount of green space we need over time given predicted population growth and I was delighted when the Council unanimously supported the creation of a 30-year funding programme in

the Long-term Plan to acquire land and create park spaces.

“If this plan is adopted, we would create two new urban parks – the first on the corner of Taranaki and Fredrick Streets, enhance 20 existing urban spaces, and double the number of trees to 4,000 in the central city over the next ten years.

“Reaching these proposed targets are critical in supporting the health and well-being of our growing residents, workers and visitor populations while helping to address the climate and ecological emergency all Council’s declared in 2019.”

Wellington city’s draft Green Network Plan and Implementation Framework is a programme to grow and better maintain the trees, shrubs, gardens, and grass that make up ‘green’ areas across the central city.

We have overlaid the predicted residential growth, building densification, and planning initiatives such as Let’s Gets Wellington Moving to identify what level and quality of green spaces are needed to help:

Lachlan motivated by housing crisis

At 21-years-old, Lachlan Patterson is tired of hearing excuses for Wellington’s housing crisis and wants to help sort it out as a city councillor.

The Karori local is running for the Wharangi Onslow-Western Ward councillor because of housing’s effect on young people.

“I think young people are getting more involved in politics because we are at the pointy end of the housing crisis, and we are the ones who are going to have to deal more and more with the effects of the climate crisis.”

Lachlan has been personally impacted by the housing shortage and Wellington’s rising rent prices.

“When I was studying, I was paying two thirds of my income on a flat and it didn’t even have room for a couch,” says Lachlan, who studied a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies at Victoria University.

He doesn’t believe students should have to be at the mercy of landlords when trying to find affordable places to rent.

“It shouldn’t be this rite of passage to live in squalor, mouldy housing that makes you sick.”

“Wellington has the lowest quality housing in the country and its students who end up renting the worst houses for unaffordable prices.”

He would like to see an increase in council

housing supply and for more innovative solutions to be trialled like the Te Kainga apartment conversions in the city.

The issues Lachlan would like to tackle in his own backyard are to revitalise the Karori town centre into a central hub for the community.

“Karori mall is quite old and sad and the whole main road is wide and unwelcoming, it would be good to make it more open to people so the community can enjoy the town centre.”

He would also like to find a solution for the traffic bottleneck through the Karori tunnel.

As for age besting experience when it comes to vying for a council position, Patterson hopes to prove this wrong.

“It’s quite clear that there’s a very narrow range of experiences on council and in government.”

“There are councillors who haven’t experienced paying two thirds of their income on rent or having mould on their ceiling, and I think that experience is worth representing.”

Lachlan has been impressed with young councillors like Tamatha Paul and Teri O’Neil who won seats on council last term.

“Councillors like Tamatha Paul have gone in there with a lot of zest and fighting spirit.

Both Teri and Tamatha have been really great councillors.”

In his spare time Lachlan enjoys cultivating a thriving garden, reading, and gaming.

Enliven nurses, take a bow As the world marks International Nurses Day 2022, Enliven is highlighting the positive difference aged care nurses make on the lives of New Zealand elders and the wider health sector.

The global nursing shortage is having a significant impact aged care in New Zealand.

Reportedly there are currently more than 1000 aged care nursing vacancies.

Enliven Central General Manager Nicola Turner is advocating for aged care nurses to be given the recognition they deserve.

“These amazing individuals make a significant difference in the lives of elders every single day. Without aged care nurses working in rest homes and communities our public hospitals would be flooded.”

She says the role of an aged care nurse is complex and diverse ranging from management of complex and chronic conditions to infection control and wound care to palliative care to rehabilitation.”

Enliven nurse Lou Kurtz agrees.

“It’s not about just handing out pills. There is so much more to the role. It’s really holistic nursing.”

Nurse Joy Castro has a background in nursing in a public hospital setting but says she has come to love aged care nursing.

“With aged care you are get to know the people personally and not just their clinical notes.”

She says aged care nurses get to truly experience both the science and art of nursing.

“I go to work with a good bunch of cool grandparents and get to help them have a good life,” she says.

Innovative bus boarding platforms taking shape The first of several new bus boarding platforms made from recycled plastic will be put together on Riddiford Street over coming days, like a giant 1000-piece jigsaw in its nationwide debut.

The modular platforms are part of the bus and bike improvements beginning to take shape between Newtown and the waterfront, and are an innovative way to make changes required at some bus stops.

The footpath-height, accessible platforms will allow people to get on and off buses safely, and cross the new bike lanes to the footpath.

Mayor Andy Foster says Wellington already has New Zealand’s highest public transport usage, alongside walking and cycling. But Wellingtonians have made it clear over many years that they want it to be easier and more convenient to get around in zero or low carbon ways.

“This includes our commitment to get public transport priority in key locations and a citywide network of safe bike routes and connections in place as fast as possible.”

tional programme manager Claire Pascoe says the colourful new platforms are an example of the types of adjustable materials being used along the route so people can experience the new layout, and then provide feedback.

“On this route, we’re looking forward to hearing what people think in a few months’ time once everything’s in place between Newtown and the waterfront.”

Claire says a key reason the platforms were selected is because they have been designed to make areas where bike lanes and bus stops intersect as safe and accessible as possible.

They’ve been tested all around the world and have won awards for sustainability and accessibility.

People on bikes will ride up low ramps over the platforms, and there will be signs and red markings to show where they need to slow down, take particular care and give way to pedestrians.

The platforms come as prefabricated components – individual building blocks – so installation involves linking them together and

bolting them to the ground.

They can be disassembled and reassembled elsewhere if required, or when they are replaced with more permanent street improvements.

They can also be reconfigured to make different sized platforms and eventually be recycled.

Five new bus platforms will be assembled along Riddiford Street and Adelaide Road between Mein and Hall streets and the Basin Reserve as part of the installation of the new bike and 24/7 bus lanes.

The first and longest platform will be assembled outside Wellington Hospital in two sections.

Starting today, contractors Fulton Hogan will position and bolt more than 1000 pieces in place to create the 70m-long platform.

“We’ll be working at non-peak times and starting at the least used end of the bus stop as the workers follow the instructions and get used to putting these together,” Claire says.

“There will be some temporary changes in place at the bus stop while the assembly work happens, but people will still be able to board

and get off buses here. All going well, and weather permitting, installation should only take a few days.”

Another platform will go in across the road, two more on either side of Adelaide Road near Drummond Street, and a fifth on the citybound side near the Basin.

The ZICLA platforms, which use a

system called Vectorial®, are made in Spain and have been successfully used around the world in recent years, including in Washington, New York, Los Angeles and Portland in the United States, Canada, Spain, France, and Ireland.

It will be the first time they have been installed in New Zealand.

Older people to get help with Smartphone Apps during Techweek22 Wellington City Libraries are putting out a special welcome to older people across the city during Techweek22, being held from Monday 16 May to Sunday 22 May. Most libraries are offering special Appy Seniors classes to help people get practical skills in accessing and using apps on their smartphones.

Each session focuses on one of ten Apps that have been selected based on feedback from seniors.

They include the SuperGold Card, Zoom video calling, WhatsApp, Google Maps, Online Groceries, Airbnb, Online Banking, TradeMe, Stuff, eBooks & Audiobooks. The programme also includes a Smartphone Basics session on ‘Getting to Know Your Smartphone’, as this is often the first stumbling block facing seniors. All sessions are one-hour in duration and include an overview of the App as well as an opportunity for participants

to download the App and start using it.

Jonny Smith, Digital Inclusion Coordinator for Wellington City Libraries, has been running Appy Seniors group sessions at He Matipihi Molesworth Library for some time and he is excited to see this expand to other libraries. “There is huge need for this sort of support.

The last two years highlighted just how much more we have to do to ensure everyone has the skills to access the ever-changing digital world. These apps are an important tool for increasing agency and combating isolation and loneliness, but too many have not been supported to learn the skills to use this technology confidently.

Seniors have been very receptive to this opportunity to get support for their smartphone from nearby libraries. We find that parents and grandparents are often the recipi-

ents of hand-me-down devices from their children, but all too often, the children are not around when their elders need help to use the device.

These classes are supportive spaces where no question is off limits.”

Laurence Zwimpfer, Operations Director for DIAA said that Appy Seniors started as a small-scale pilot programme but interest has expanded quickly as communities recognise this pressing need for help, especially from older people.

“We have developed a series of pamphlets that participants can use as a guide for each App; these are available for Android and Apple devices, and we even printed them on A3 paper to make it easier for older people to follow the screenshots.”

During Techweek22, Appy Seniors classes are being offered at nine Wellington libraries and one community centre. Classes are generally being held at 10.15 and

‘Appy’ Seniors will be getting help with their Smartphone Apps.

Good time to buy? YIP! Hey Everyone! With everything that is going on in the property market, it can feel a bit overwhelming when making property decisions. Here are a few things to consider that may help; 1. Price Trends: Yes, the media have been reporting a price trend down, but keep in mind that most of data used have a time delay. If we sell a house today, that price may not reach official public data until much closer to settlement or even on settlement.

So, a lot of the ‘predicted’ price trends, have already happened and are not a reliable indicator for future changes.

2. Buying in the Dip? The ideal of buying at the lowest point of this phase of the market may seem nice - but all buyers are thinking the same. Whenever the media / market perceives the market to dip we start to see the backlog of buyers flood the market. Which welcomes back the much-loved tenders, deadline sales, auctions etc. Market value may have bottomed out, but this will be balanced back with competitive value. My wife and I just bought a house, yes, it is probably going to lose some value - but we much rather buy in direct negotiation with vendor with no competition.

3. Motivated Sellers: In times like these you can be assured that all the sellers on the market have a genuine motivation and need to sell. So go ahead and do your due diligence and have the confidence that your efforts won’t be wasted. Sellers are also aware of the change in market value/future trends and this creates a

healthy balanced 4. Affordability: Interest rates have gone up and with the market variables now, this trend is likely to continue. So, buying now and fixing at a lower rate will make a significant difference to your mortgage long-term.

For example, if you take an average mortgage and look at the different of 1% interest rate over the entire term, you are looking at around $200k more in total cost. Which pales in significance against waiting for prices to drop a little more. Plus, if you are currently renting, you may as well be paying your own mortgage and not your landlords.

If you’re aged 65 or older and you answer ‘yes’ to any of these questions you may be the victim of elder abuse, according to Claire Booth from Wesley Community Action who spoke to a recent meeting of the Johnsonville Probus Club.

Ms Booth manages Te Waka Haumaru, Wesley Community Action’s Older Persons Team, which is responsible for running the Elder Abuse Response Service (EARS) for the greater Wellington region. Last year, the EARS team responded to 206 referrals about a range of issues from financial abuse to physical abuse.

It’s thought that as many as one in 10 older people are at risk of abuse.

Ms Booth told the Johnsonville Probus Club meeting that elder abuse comes in many forms and is particularly likely among older people who live alone with no friends or family nearby or who are managing conflict within their whƗQau. Issues such as cognitive impairment or a history of drug or alcohol problems can put older people at greater risk of abuse.

Signs that abuse may be occurring include not being allowed to see or talk to the older person, having little or no food in the house, being inappropriately dressed for the weather, or the presence of bruising or pressure sores.

Financial abuse is a strong driver for many other kinds of abuse and Ms Booth recommends that older people set up Enduring Power of Attorney to protect their financial assets and for future protection of their health and welfare.

She says her team takes a restorative approach to dealing with elder abuse, working to build trusted relationships and reconnect older people with their wKƗnau.

“We believe it’s possible to bring everyone to a better place and ensure the long-term safety of the older person.”

Rugby may not be super but it’s improving This is not a vintage Super Rugby season but it is compelling.

The competition really misses the South African teams in a big way but the Australian franchises deserve a lot of credit for pulling up their socks and being more competitive this year.

The Brumbies comfortably accounted for the Chiefs 38-28 in Hamilton on Saturday night and that came just a week after they thumped the Hurricanes 42-25 in

Canberra.

At the same time, the Reds pushed the Chiefs and the Force got within four points of the Blues.

The games are more competitive and the Aussies look fitter, more physical and more willing at the breakdown.

That’s providing a more even spectacle which can only be good for a competition which looks like it is running out of steam.

The Crusaders and Brumbies

encounter in Canberra on Friday night now looms as an enthralling game.

The Crusaders, for their own part, have looked below par most of the season.

They’ve lost three games in a season under coach Scott Robertson for the first time after a lack of discipline, injuries and Covid-19 have all contributed to a stop-start campaign by their lofty standards.

The better play of the Australian

franchises against our teams shows two things.

One: The Aussies have improved in many areas to the point where a win against any of our teams isn’t a shock and this is not a very good period of All Blacks rugby.

The world class talent is pretty thin in the ranks and as our teams regress, the Australian resurgence has created a closing of the gap.

Now Australia are not back to their glory days of John Eales,

George Gregan, Stephen Larkham, Stirling Mortlock, Totei Kefu etc but they are on an up-swing which is more than you can say for the state of the All Blacks at present.

Can either the Wallabies or All Blacks match it against France heading into the World Cup next year?

Not in my opinion but both still have time to try to rectify their issues and Super Rugby is an important cog in that.

Phoenix prevail as North Wellington lack finishing touch

Week seven of the Men’s Central Football League has come to an end and there are no seismic changes regarding the hopes and dreams of the fortunate four teams to progress through to the National summer league competition at the conclusion of the regular season.

There will be no focus groups or counselling sessions required at Karori Park HQ after the local lads went down 2-0 at the hands of Napier City Rovers on Sunday.

Waterside were in the hunt every step of the way and it took until the 72nd and 75th minutes for the momentum to swing to Rovers who were at home at Park Island.

It was the first time all season that Waterside Karori had not managed to put a point or more in their kit bag.

The way that other results played out though, meant a trip two pegs down the ladder to fourth spot in the blink of an eye, so tight are the margins currently.

Much was expected of the matchup between TFS North Wellington and the Wellington Phoenix Reserves at Alex Moore Park on Saturday.

There’s no price for admission but if there was, the cost of the ticket would have been worth it.

It was 1-0 to the Nix at the end of day in an entertaining, end to end match.

The young Nix bought a physicality to their game not seen before and did not lack attitude.

The difference in the end was a red card against Norths because of a double yellow situation.

This left Norths down to 10 men for the last 36 minutes of the match.

With the momentum swinging in the Nix’s favour, they took their chances and Josh Rudland scored on the 60-minute mark through an overlap on defence which was going to happen more and more in the last third of the game.

That’s where things ended though, with the Nix unable to press home their advantage any further and Norths playing as though they were a full-strength side.

Across town, Wellington Olympic had a dominant 4-0 home win over Western Suburbs, the latter confounding the local football community with Jekyll and Hyde performances over recent weeks.

Wellington United went down 3-0 at home to Havelock North Wanderers and Petone were carved up 5-0 by Miramar Rangers.

The cream is definitely rising to the top now.

Covid impacts Johnsonville rugby

Joh nsonville’s Swinda le Shield premier team and premier reserves team had to sit out their respective rugby fixtures on Saturday after Covid-19 struck the club during the week.

The club released a statement on Friday saying “a further wave of Covid-19 has hit the club over the past few days.

“This has impacted a number of players across various teams and also certain coaches, management and members.

“This has impacted the ability

for both our Premier and Premier Reserves to field a safe and reasonable team against both Hutt Old Boys Marist (HOBM) and Paremata-Plimmerton (Para-Plim) in their respective competitions.

“A decision has been made by the club to not play both

matches.”

The Swindale Shield implications mean both teams share three points but it is understood that this fixture might yet be played as a midweek catch-up fixture.

Johnsonville premier coach, Jason Adamson said the club

as a whole was disappointed to be in the position but it was a reality many clubs had already been through.

He was hopeful the majority of the senior squad would be able to train today ahead of their Swindale Shield encounter against Poneke.
