As part of their My Personal Learning Day class the group of students brainstormed and came up with their vision for Wainuiomata as a place of harmony and unity, a place where families, local and from over the hill want to come to.

They say the current park is unsafe, the surface is broken and dangerous and if it was to be more family orientated it would bring more parents to the area and this would help others using the park to feel safer.

The students have worked on their vision and come up with what is needed and why.

They say the community needs a space where youth can move and work on their Taha Pou, or to elaborate Taha Wairua (spirit) Taha Tinana (physical health) Taha Hinengaro ( mental health) Taha Wyhanau ( family health).

They are asking for the park to be a well lit place at night where families can feel safe and welcomed.

One of the points the students make is that a lot of the new housing developments in Wainuiomata have very small back yards and some have no outside space for kids to play and a well developed park would be a haven for playing safely.

They are calling on the community to come out and support their submisson to council and already have the support of many local businesses and prominent community members.

inbrief news Hutt Road improvements Let’s Get Wellington Moving has kick-started its three-year programme with public and community engagement on proposed changes to Thorndon Quay and Hutt Road.

The proposed changes will improve walking and cycling, make bus journeys more reliable and enhance the experience for everyone that uses Thorndon Quay and Hutt Road.

On an average weekday there are more than 6,000 bus passengers and up to 1,300 cyclists.

Consultation will be open from Tuesday 11 May to Tuesday 8 June 2021.

There will be open days on Friday 21 May from 3-7pm and on Saturday 22 May from 10am to 3pm. The public are invited to discuss the proposed changes with the project team and submit feedback. Feedback can also be submitted online at lgwm.nz/ thorndonquayhuttroad from 11 May.

Parkrun NZ celebrates nine years In near perfect running and walking conditions, parkrun celebrated nine years in New Zealand last Saturday.

New Zealand’s first parkrun was held in Lower Hutt in May 2012 where a field of 84 ran the 5km riverside course.

A sign of the growth of parkrun in the Hutt was evident on the weekend when 226 runners and walkers completed the course.

The event also welcomed international tourists back into the fold with runners from Australia taking advantage of the recently re-opened borders.

Wainuiomata residents have been regulars at parkrun Lower Hutt mainly through the Athletics & Harriers Club but also through local families, the Carmans, Houlihans and Sagagas.

ter Somerville, the quickest male in a time of 17m 10s.

Helen Rowse-Walker was the first woman home running her first parkrun in a time of 22m 32s. The oldest participant ran in the 75-79 years category; the youngest had nine running in the U-10 category.

The birthday was celebrated at a well attended function in Station Village.

Parkrun takes place every Saturday at 8am starting just under the Ewen Bridge. Anyone can register for free at parkrun.co.nz/ register.

Once registered, parkrunners can run at any of the 1,200 parkrun events around the world including the 38 events in New Zealand.

Days Bay wharf is back A two-year refurbishment of Days Bay Wharf that will extend its life for at least another 50 years is now complete.

The $4.6 million project was able to be completed without significant disruption to the ferry service to Wellington, but was delayed due to Covid-19.

Council Strategic Advisor Bruce Hodgins says it was crucial the wharf remained open during the refurbishment.

“The wharf brings our region together by allowing people to ferry over to explore the Hutt, so it was important we did this work so people could continue to do

this without disruption, and ensure we continued to have a marine gateway to our city.”

Mr Hodgins also said it’s great to have the wharf back to a safe standard, especially with a new surface which means it will be easier to remove for maintenance and its flexibility makes it more

The Days Bay Wharf project is part of a broader strategy for the city’s four wharves. Refurbishment of Rona Bay Wharf was completed in 2018. Council will consider the Petone Wharf refurbishment as part of the Long Term Plan.

Coffee fix for Wainuiomata

Getting a coffee fix in Wainuiomata has become a whole lot easier with the opening of Coffee@The Strand.

Keen on a barista brewed coffee part owner in the business Dave Downer, who also owns local insulation business D-Fluff Insulation, had been contemplating having a coffee cart on The Strand for a few months and converted a car transporter into a stylish coffee cart.

Dave says the cart is still a work in progress but getting it underway with good coffee being served by great barista’s was the first step.

“We were going over the hill

for a coffee and had been talking about setting up a coffee cart with Kirstie who is our accounts manager and we looked into it and the next thing was we were building the deck and the coffee cart was here and away it went,” Dave says.

Part of the idea was to generate more business for the area as well as serve great coffee.

“It was a bit of an expense to get it up and running but I think it is worth it as there is the retirement village going up over the road and there are 78 to 72 houses going in down the road and in the last five years Wainuiomata has changed dramatically and our goal is long term,” Dave says.

Ethiopian petition for Ginny Andersen As atrocities against Amhara ethnic communities worsen in Ethiopia, the community here in Aotearoa New Zealand is asking the Government to condemn the increasing attacks and urge the Ethiopian government to stop and prevent the ongoing massacre of the Amhara ethnic groups in different parts of Ethiopia.

The Ethiopian Community in New Zealand will deliver a petition to parliament asking it to condemns the increasing attacks that are displacing more and more people every day.

People will gather at Civic Square in Wellington from 10am and will proceed to parliament grounds for the petition handover at 12:30pm to

Organizer Degu Geddebo says people are being violently persecuted almost on a daily basis.

“Every day people are being violently attacked, so we are grateful our local MP, Ginny Anderson, is accepting our petition. We hope the Government, seen overseas as

a compassionate one, will listen to our voices and publically condemn the attacks.”

Geddebo says the atrocities have been ongoing for many years but the latest worsening has meant the international community is now listening.

“I am hopeful that if enough people

like us, in other countries, speak up, that the right people will start listening. We must all realise that no matter how far away human rights abuses are happening, they are an offence to all people because we are all human and if we all voice our concerns together, it will make a difference.”

Free eradication programme Greater Wellington is urging the community to make good use of its free pest plant identification services this autumn by contacting the regional council if they spot a potential pest plant in their midst.

Under the Regional Pest Management Plan (RPMP), Greater Wellington hones in on a hit-list of pest plants dangerous to our region’s environment and primary industries. Greater Wellington will control the plants identified as pest under the RPMP at no

cost to landowners. Plants not declared as pests in the RPMP, like pampas grass, are only controlled by the council in critically valuable areas but Greater Wellington will provide free identification and advice on how to control these pests.

Among the worst offenders listed in the RPMP are Nassella tussock, Chilean Needle grass, and Alligator weed. These three species do not currently exist in our region, but would cause massive damage if they were to

take hold. Greater Wellington has zero tolerance approach to these species and will identify and remove them free of charge.

The council is also asking people to keep an eye out for a group of pest plants that have already made their way into our region, and are especially easy to spot throughout autumn.

These are Senegal tea, climbing spindleberry, velvetleaf and moth plant.

Penny Gaylor, Chair of Greater Wellington’s Environment Com-

mittee, says this work is critical because pest plants have the potential to devastate our region’s ecosystem and economy.

The message is particularly important for people working on agricultural land, because pest plants can be moved between farms on vehicles and equipment. If they take hold, they can reduce available grazing land and productivity, and make livestock sick. Farmers and people who work outside should be extra vigilant and urgently call Greater

Wellington for free advice and plant identification.

People who think they have spotted one of the pest plants on the RPMP hit list should urgently contact pest.plants@gw.govt.nz or 0800 496 734. It’s helpful if people take photos of the plant and make a precise note of the plant’s location when calling in with a tip.

Lions donate for Heart kids By: Gerald Rillstone A grand total of $31,505.00 in funds has been donated to the Wellington branch of Heartkids by the Lions Club of Wainuiomata.

Heartkids Wellington Regional Family Support Coordinator at Heartkids New Zealand says when Lion Club of Wainuiomata president Neil Watkins called to say they had a donation of over

$31,000 it bought tears to her eyes.

“The money will definitely be used for our Wainuiomata families,” she says.

Along to receive the donation was Lora Wylie-Gyde who had her first heart surgery when she was two weeks old and a further surgery around Christmas 2018 at Starship Hospital.

The original funds were raised by community groups in the late

1980’s and early 1990’s to fund a heart transplant for Angela De Boer who lived in Wainuiomata.

With Angela unfortunately passing away before the transplant could take place it was agreed that the funds would be used for the benefit of the residents of the Wainuiomata community.

Over the years the money was added to by Brugger Industries Staff, Lions Club of Pencarrow,

Lions Club of WainuiomataPakeke and other community groups.

The fund grew to $60,000 and distributions have been made over the years to assist with the cost of a liver transplant, the purchase of a CPAP machine for sleep apnoea, assistance with the costs of an operation for spinal surgery related to severe arthritis, purchase of a mobility scooter and funding of Heart Defibrillators.

A national operation launched

by Police in February targeting the disruption and prevention of firearms-related violence by criminal gangs and organised criminal groups is already seeing results.

Since Operation Tauwhiro launched in February, 350 firearms have been seized, along with $2.46 million in cash.

378 people have been arrested in relation to firearms offences.

Police welcomes information from anyone who has concerns about organised crime, illicit drugs, or the illegal possession of firearms in their community.

Wainuiomata icon Tony Watling has written his last ode as the twilight years take their toll. The 94 year old has been forced to give up his passion and move out of the valley. The New Zealand Olympic Committee is calling on Kiwis to get on board and show their support for the New Zealand Team as they gear up for the Tokyo Olympic Games by giving a name to a giant 12-metre long, 800-kg skateboard.

The super-sized skateboard celebrates six newly added events at the Olympic Games, including skateboarding, surfing and threeon-three basketball. Set to break records by entering the Guinness Book of World Records for the larg-

est fully operational skateboard in the world, the board is a symbol of the changing face of the Olympics.

The skateboard is travelling the length and breadth of Aotearoa for the ‘Great Olympic Skate Roadshow’ and will visit 40 towns in 41 days starting in Kaikohe on Monday 10 May, but first it needs a name.

Milestone in Violence Prevention announced by minister

Bacon and Egg Pie Ingredients:

Method:

s 4 sheets flaky pastry s 6 rashers bacon, roughly chopped s 8–10 eggs s ½–¾ cup Wattie’s Frozen Baby Peas s 1 egg, beaten, or 2 Tbsp milk

1. Preheat oven to 200°C (fan assisted). Lightly grease a 24 cm x 20 cm ovenproof dish.

2. Place 2 sheets of pastry on a lightly floured board, one on top of the other. Using a rolling pin, roll out the pastry large enough to line the base and sides of the dish. Scatter over half the bacon. Crack the eggs on top, breaking the egg yolks if wished. Season with salt and pepper before scattering the Wattie’s frozen Baby Peas and remaining bacon.

3. Brush the edges where the pastry will join with beaten egg or milk. Roll the remaining 2 sheets of pastry and lay over the top and seal the edges. Brush the pie top with beaten egg or milk and make a slit in the top to allow steam to escape.

4. Bake for 35–40 minutes. Serve with Wattie’s Tomato Sauce.

Minister for Family and Sexual Violence Marama Davidson announced a major milestone with the launch of the national engagement process on the prevention and elimination of family and sexual violence.

Wahine Maori are still disproportionately represented according to the data. More than 1 in 3 are survivors of family and/or sexual violence.

Marama Davidson was clear about the engagement process opening up a safe and trusted space for all voices of the community, particularly those with lived experience to be listened to and learnt from prior to the creation of the National Strategy and Action Plans.

Artist Maria Mariu By: Gerald Rillstone Learning to take time for herself has bought artist Maria Mariu back to doing something she loves, painting and creating.

Maria studied art into the sixth form at school and then life got busy and for a few decades she had little time to enjoy it but recently learned to take time for herself and recharge which has brought her back to painting and now every chance

she gets Maria paints.

“I started painting again around 2017 when I did a Diploma of Adult Education at the Wananga and they teach you how to manage your time and make sure you have some space for yourself,” she says.

During the week Maria works for the Department of Corrections in the Maori Focus Unit and painting has bought balance back to her life.

“Some days are harder than others at work but they are

few and far between but that is why I come home and like to paint, whakanoa which is about bringing balance to yourself,” Maria says.

Pretty soon after starting on her new journey as an artist Maria discovered other people really liked what she was doing and she gave pieces away and pretty soon her kids were taking them home as well.

The process for Maria is not straight forward when she paints, “I don’t really

Your health is determined by your food: By Wally Richards

Readers that have followed my articles over the years would be very familiar with a theme which runs through them and that is: Your health, which is determined by your food chain which is determined by the health of the soil that the plants grow in, plus the animals that you eat that feed on those plants.

Much of the food you buy has only little or no nutritional value to your body; it is just a filler for your stomach and even after you have eaten you still feel peckish.

This feeling of ‘peckish’ is your body saying ‘Hey you have shoved a lot of stuff into me now where are the vitamins, minerals, elements, antioxidants that I need?

This I believe is one of the main reasons for overweight. Your body graves high nutritional value food but instead you supply bulk.

But it is even worse the bulk muck we ‘shovel in’ contains a lot of chemical poisons that the commercial food chain have used to make money and ultimately shorten your unhealthy life.

Realise that many of the same shareholders in fertiliser and chemical companies have also invested in the pharmaceutical companies and the medical industry.

Make them sick then sell them the products to ease (not cure) the sickness.

What amazes me is that the Gover nment a nd our Health department don’t wake up to the fact that our overloaded hospitals and medical practitioners are a result of our poor (can I say unhealthy) food chain?

Every now and then something pops up and also says what I have been spouting for some time and here is an example of that: ‘For thousands of years, civilisations have been controlled through their food chain our world today is no exception’.

And with a global population of 7.8 billion, controlling the global food supply is big business.

What impact does the control and monopolisation of our food chain have on human health?

Bush believes that “something” was the invention of industrialchemical agriculture and the introduction of toxic pesticides, such as Monsanto’s Roundup weedkiller.

Spraying food with chemicals prevents plants from forming the building blocks needed to properly nourish not only humans but all mammals, Bush said, and that ultimately destroys our ability to ward off illnesses.

Hall closed for repairs Corrosion to the portal frame leg and hold down connection has reduced the sear capacity and uplift resistance for the building.

An inspection in March 2020 found the corrosion damage which according to a report may have been caused by an accumulation of debris and prolonged moisture around the portal frame legs.

Repairs to the building were scheduled earlier this year but multiple delays in starting the work due to COVID, staff turnover, contractor availability and consent issues have held up progress according to a February 15 memorandum.

The new expected date was then set for April 2021 but was subject to

the findings of a further investigation.

The memorandum says the risk of leaving the hall open for public use are high due to the high number of people accessing the hall for various activities.

Any seismic or high wind loads could limit the strength of the building, increasing the chance of localised collapse.

Reece Walsh is going places Reece Walsh may not have a passport yet but he is going to take the Warriors places.

Just three games into his NRL career, the 18-year-old has already announced himself as one of the most promising players to suit up for the club since a young Shaun Johnson.

The Queensland and Brisbane Broncos junior is on a seven-figure three-year deal at the Warriors and already seems to show the skillset

and nature that will endear himself to Warriors fans.

The talented teen already plays with flair beyond his years but also without fear of making mistakes and he will make plenty of them over the next few weeks and months.

However, the short-term pain will be well worth it in the long run.

Whether he plays at fullback or in the halves next year, he will be an asset and the type of player you can build a competitive team around.

Walsh still watches every NRL game each weekend and is close friends with fellow Queensland youngster Sam Walker. who has made an immediate impression with the Sydney Roosters.

You have to wonder what is happening at the Broncos at present after they let those two talented teens walk.

Walsh has all the skills to be a transformational player at the club.

Hopefully, he can make the most

of his time alongside Roger TuivasaSheck and soak up that knowledge like a sponge.

Whether Walsh can push the current crop of players to a top-eight finish remains to be seen as the injury bug has hammered the team over the past month.

What does benefit the Warriors is the upcoming State of Origin period where other clubs generally are under-manned and ready for the picking.

Walsh’s rapid rise probably helped the Warriors to swiftly decline any chance of a Shaun Johnson reunion as the latter continues to struggle for form after returning from injury for the Cronulla Sharks.

If Walsh can stay fit and grow his game in the tough position of standoff, then he will ease the pain of the end of the RTS era and welcome in his era because there is no doubt he has a bright future at Mt Smart Stadium.

Ulalei netball season starts with local derby The netball season for Hutt Valley centre “passed off” on Saturday 8 May 2021 with the first round of competition games.

Ulalei Netball Club’s Premier 1 defending champions, Team Pua, had a tough first outing against newcomers, Wellington Men’s and Mixed Netball Association. This is the first men’s team to ever play in the Hutt Valley competition.

Despite losing heavily to the men’s team (final score 83-47), Pua captain Ellen Miles was in good spirits, “We gave them a good run in some areas and the team enjoyed the variation of skills the men’s team brings to the competition. We know what we need to work on when we next meet up.”

Ulalei’s other Premier 1 team, Aute, also had a loss against Upper Hutt Maidstone United 73-32. A new look team with players from the young guns in the senior grade progressing in the Premier 1 league.

“I think it was a really good taster for our young players, who played well against a more experienced team. Some learnings which we will work on at training this week,” says captain Sina Tamaalii.

The one that got away!

Wainuiomata faced rivals Hutt Old Boys Marist at William Jones park on Saturday afternoon. A strong crowd was present as the club was celebrating Old Timers day and the milestone of 150 premier games for veteran Teru Time. It was a crucial game for both sides as they both had recorded 2 wins and 2 losses after 4 rounds of the Swindale Shield.

Wainuiomata started the stronger and were able to build pressure by pinning the visitors in their own half by stringing multiple phases together and clever tactical kicking. HOBM’s large pack dominated early at scrum time but it was Wainuiomata’s backline who rushed HOBM into a dropped pass and winger Campbell Cowie scooped up the loose ball to run 50m untouched under the posts. HOBM though rallied and hit back through prop Brett Manaia who barged over from close range.

Wainuiomata came away with points regularly when they entered the HOBM 40m zone as ill-discipline

at ruck time was punished by deadly kicker Josh Robertson-Weepu who kicked 5 penalties in the first half to lead 22-10 at the break. Into the second half though and the old cliché of ‘a game of two halves’ occurred as HOBM with a strong wind aiding them narrowed the score immediately as a gaping hole in Wainuiomata’s defence enabled HOBM’s Brandyn Laursen to charge over. Wainuiomata hung tough for the next 20 minutes as the pressure built but the turning point came when HOBM won a lineout and executed a fine driving maul that went 20m to the Wainuiomata try line until Teru Time was judged to have entered the maul from the side and pulled it down to receive a yellow card. HOBM scored straight from the penalty through Manaia again. Both kickers traded penalties and with minutes remaining Wainuiomata conceded a penalty that Laursen kicked to take a 30-28 lead. Wainuiomata had one last attempt and looked like winning the game only for a turnover close to the line to finish their hopes of victory.

For Wainuiomata flanker Sam Smith had a great day at the breakdown and made lots of tackles, Lolagi Visinia was steady at the back and made some nice attacking runs while first five Josh Robertson-Weepu kicked 8 from 8, defended strongly and his passing game was on point. Coach Daniel Smith was disappointed with the loss. “We applied pressure early, were dominant in possession and kept the score ticking over in the first half.” He added “we knew playing

into the wind in the second half we would need to be accurate, patient and build phases, but unfortunately our set piece and ball contact let us down and we also lacked composure in defence.” Smith was proud of the effort but conceded “We didn’t execute, gave away silly penalties and in the end it was the one that got away.”

This Saturday Wainuiomata face Old Boys University at Nairnville park, 2.45pm kick off.
