Student seizes WOW challenge Continued from page 1. It came about because her Design Technology tutor Nan Walden was contacted by a long-standing contact and friend Jo Morris from the Wellington Sewing Centre. She asked if Nan could find someone to fill the Shop Window spot. She certainly could. “I knew what I was looking

for,” says Nan. “Someone very reliable, very talented, very creative. Someone I knew would do an amazing job.” Renee ticked all the boxes. And she had also, under her own steam, been to a day-long Massey University workshop on coding LED lights, targeted at WOW. So the LED coding chal-

Monday evening’s Meet the Candidates function in St Luke’s Church Hall attracted some 50 plus Wadestown and Highland Park residents from the Onslow Western Wharangi Ward. At least one MP was also spotted, as was a stray southern ward candidate getting the lowdown on the issues. There were exactly three minutes of fame each for ward and mayoral candidate, with two enforcers armed with stopwatch and bell. Luckless western ward can-

didate Michelle Rush arrived just after the briefing from chair Brendon Tracey. Her assumption of a warning bell was quickly dispelled. “How many more seconds do I have?” “None!” (She accepted that cheerfully, being able to make up for it in question time.) Extra explanations had a few seconds of grace then a very loud and continuous bell. The need for urgent action on climate change featured largely, as did transport and prioritising of financial decisions.

The Island Bay cycleway received many dishonourable mentions and there was also criticism about unanimous council decisions. Sitting members pointed out that this could follow vigorous debate, with compromise and change enabling unanimity. And in summing up, aspiring candidate Rebecca Matthews gave advice on effective decision making. “This works well: Don’t be a dick!”

There was more laughter than you might expect. Mayoral candidate Don Newt McDonald, for example, began with an analysis of measured consumption of a personal wine lake. “Are you with me?” he then asked, getting a resounding “No!” from those present. Cellphone tower provokes anger in Ngaio

inbrief news Mock emergency near Raroa station

By Glenise Dreaver

Residents of Bankot Crescent in Ngaio are just one of the communities nationwide raising a chorus of protest about the 2Degrees plan to erect a 10m high cellphone tower in their suburban street. Spokesperson Adam Taylor says they have 128 signatures on a petition sent to 2Degrees, representing 95 percent of the street’s approximately 50 homes. The most insulting aspect, Adam says, is this: “That 2Degrees have not answered all of our questions, and we are powerless as the government and councils have waived our rights to consent. Cellphone towers can be erected anywhere in New Zealand without consent under the Resource Management Act. “We’re seen as a soft target. I don’t think they’d try their luck in mid-Khandallah.” It was on July 27 when a handful of those in the street were told of the plan by a letterbox drop. Reaction was fast, with a first meeting on August 4.

On Friday August 27, the residents of Bankot Street gathered to protest plans by 2Degrees to erect a 10-metre high cellphone tower on the berm in front of one of the homes in the street. PHOTO: Glenise Dreaver.

They also contacted WCC councillor Diane Calvert and MP Greg O’Connor. However, their hands are tied as, says Adam, the Resource Management Act means no resource consent is needed. He says the chosen site is on a small berm, 3m X 4m and less than ten metres from the front door of the affected house. That raises valuation issues,

with prices known to drop due to the perception of harm. “You buy a house in a street and then find they can plant a tower outside your front door. Not fair,” he says. Another issue is that the street is also in a bird corridor. The group has identified many alternative sites where there are no homes nearby but efforts to engage with 2Degrees

management on that, and other problems, have proved fruitless. “We’re dealing with a lack of cooperation.” Nationwide, groups fighting the same issue need someone to take the bull by the horns over the loss of rights says Adam. Now the group has taken to social media to spread the word Facebook: Fighting4fairNZ Youtube: Fighting 4 Fair NZ

Old water main fails in Khandallah By Glenise Dreaver

Last Thursday, a burst water main affected homes and businesses in central Khandallah, some until late at night. Replacing the six inch diameter cast iron pipe, installed in 1925, proved to be a complex job, with water to some affected areas going on and off during the day. Others stayed without water until approximately 10.30pm, including the Taste Suburban Dining Room which lost a day’s business. Alex van Paassen, a spokesperson for Water Wellington,

says that with jobs like this, first isolating the leak and ensuring the right valves are turned off can take time. “Then they had to dig down to one and a half metres in some sections. That meant getting more kit because as you go deeper, you need to ensure workers’ safety by shoring up the sides of the trench,” he says The pipe was close to a sewage pipe which also needed to be repaired and isolated to avoid contamination of the water supply Alex adds. They also needed to be careful not to damage other buried

Six bus replacements were used on the Johnsonville railway line between 10am and 1pm last Thursday as Metlink undertook an emergency simulation exercise. Locomotive engineers, passenger operators, train managers and others had a scenario where a passenger train stopped in Tunnel 7, near Raroa Station, after a truck hit the overhead power, cutting off the train’s power. A Metlink spokesperson said that in such a situation, there may be passengers with impaired eyesight, mobility issues and anxiety. “There can also be people with babies or young children.” On-board personnel practised making announcements, caring for people with ailments or anxiety, ushering people off the train and getting them safely to the nearest station platform.

Street light outage app Wellingtonians will now be able to use a new feature in the WCC’s FIXiT App to check if a street light in the city has been reported. The new feature, while still in the development and pilot phase, went live last week. A link from the FIXiT App takes users to a web page with an interactive map showing each light outage so customers know the outage is being dealt with. The standard timeline for fixing a simple lighting outage is 15 working days.

“But it may take longer than anyone would like. And we can’t afford to do absolutely everything,” he says. He believes however, their analysis and recommendations, due in December, will please more people. “We’ll never please everyone though. And there is a danger in any redesign you could take out what people are really happy with, for example the weekend services.” He made the comment in Karori on Saturday August 31, during one of the GWRC’s day-long neighbourhood dropin workshops on the bus problems. Karori was the eleventh of 17 workshops across the city, to end in Khandallah on Saturday September 14, and a steady stream of visitors were posting comments on stickies on whiteboards, and discussing their issues and asking questions of Metlink staff. It was no surprise that when the Independent Herald visited, questions about and feedback on the No 2 bus had already drawn the largest number of comments and queries, few complimentary. Cushla Smith of Karori summed it up this way: “There just aren’t enough No 2 buses, or seats on the ones there are.” She added they were always driving past her full, and she now had to leave home a good half hour earlier than before to get to work on time. Once you do get on, crowding

means another problem, she says. “How do I get off?” Anthony is well aware of the issues for Karori commuters. “We need bigger buses on the route, but double deckers are a problem because of the tunnel’s size.” “We also need more priority for buses here to get through the traffic more rapidly.” For these reasons, any solution could well mean big additional costs, he says. A big issue overall is that of bus drivers’ pay, he says. That’s what people have been telling us. “And that’s about how we fund public transport in this country. Anthony’s background, most recently leading the restructuring of the Auckland bus network, also includes 20 years at GWRC. He was Public Transport Planning Manager until 2006. He says that gives him a good depth of understanding. “It’s a complex issue and anyone would be challenged,” he admits. “I wasn’t involved in the redesign and I’m not working with operational issues,” Andrew adds. “My role is restricted to network issues. That is routes, timetables, how services connect with each other.” The online survey for all suburbs remains open until Sunday September 22. Conserving native seeds for the future By Lauren Simpson

The Lions Otari Plant Conservation Laboratory is promising more successful native species conservation says Conservation and Science Advisor Karin Van der Walt. Work in the laboratory centres on long term seed storage, research and observation. “We are investigating how seeds store at sub-zero temperatures,” adds Karin. “We need to know how we can secure that seed for the long term. The work we do now might be used for restoration 100 or 1000 years from now.” “We need to know that we can

produce that seed from storage when it is needed, and it did not die while in storage.” The laboratory is a sterile and controlled environment, containing equipment needed for the research. “We need to control temperature, we need to control light, and we need to eliminate variables to understand what it is doing to our seed,” says Karin. Victoria University Bachelor of Science student Jennifer Alderton-Moss won a summer scholarship in 2018 to research native orchid seed at the lab over summer. However, she remains working on what is the first research on long-term storage of native orchid

species. “It is so much better than at uni following a protocol, because you are actually figuring out what needs to be done,” says Jennifer. The work that Karin, Jennifer and their colleagues have been working on would not have been possible without this laboratory first funded by the Karori Lions. “It is not an enormous set-up, but it is essential because we have the equipment that we need,” says Karin. “It is really important. We want to build more on this, getting young people involved in plant conservation because they are the ones who are going to continue doing the work after we leave.”

Government have been setting a dizzying pace in the last few weeks with announcements on establishing a cancer agency to ensure coordinated and consistent treatment across the country, funding of more cancer drugs, mental health treatment facilities, the reset of KiwiBuild to a more sensible aspiration, and a plan to clean up our waterways, just to name a few. While we have much to do, it is nevertheless important to fully understand the issues before charging off and just throwing money at the problem, hence the need for the reviews we have been doing. I’m personally pleased we have pulled the KiwiBuild targets because dogged adherence to a policy which is not working would have us ending up like Boris Johnston and Brexit, where he can’t see what the rest of the UK and the world can. What we won’t do is stop building houses, we will build the right houses in the right place at the right time. Of course there is always

moaning and complaining from the opposition, usually demanding we do more quickly what they didn’t do at all. But that’s politics. I spoke to a local businessman last week whose business is booming, who has mountains of work going forward, but is pessimistic because of what he hears from the opposition. It is a shame to have people talking down the economy for their own political purposes, when it’s bad for the country. I like to take my soundings from the people I meet around the electorate, most of whom seem to be more worried about the prospects of others than themselves. New Zealand is a haven of political calm in an ocean of upheaval and uncertainty, and that sets us up well to continue to be the country everyone wants to live in. On that, watch out for more announcements about immigration in the coming months. Plaque honours local man By Glenise Dreaver

On Sunday August 25, four generations of the Howard family gathered in the Khandallah Town Hall for the unveiling of a plaque in memory of the late Brian Howard. The ceremony was held just days before the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of WWII on September 1. That was a fitting date because it was Brian, a long term resident of Khandallah, who took on the responsibility of tracking servicepeople from the Khandallah area who served and were killed in World War II. When the Khandallah Town Hall was renovated in 2011, Brian had noted that there was an Honours Board there, remembering those who went to World War I, along with those who made the supreme

sacrifice, but there was not an Honours Board from World War II. That hit close to home. Brian had two brothers who died in World War II and he decided to track the names of the rest. “It was such a task, but he wanted to honour his brothers” says Fiona McKenzie from the town hall. “Without Brian’s huge efforts we wouldn’t have this important record of the sacrifices made by local men and their families”. Dermot Byrne, former chair of The Cornerstone Trust, Brian’s son Phil Howard, and Brian’s sister, Shirley spoke at the small ceremony, where the family was joined by local people and others who had a connection with those tors are interested in any information remembered by his work. people would like to share It is, however, a work in “If you have a parent a grandparent progress and the co-ordina- or a great grandparent whose stories

Karori community bus offers A fresh look at the world a custom-designed service By Glenise Dreaver

“Water colour is my favourite medium,” says tutor Robyn Eastgate-Manning, who teaches at the Karori art and craft centre’s regular Tuesday morning class. Her watercolour painting classes are very popular, with the Wednesday and Thursday night classes permanently almost full, though there are still some places in the Tuesday daytime group. And Robyn’s hoping to fill those spaces because, she says, everyone needs to discover the joy of painting. “And it’s something everyone can do. I would love everyone to paint!” “To improve things is to simplify.” Watercolour tutor Robyn Eastgate-Manning had this advice for student Mary-Anne Merrin who was setting up her paper in her recent art class at the Karori Art and Craft Centre. PHOTO: Glenise Dreaver

“It’s there to use!” says Jane Campbell, bus co-ordinator and member of the Karori Community Bus committee. She’s certain that there are community groups in Karori who could make good use of the nine-passenger van. “But they don’t even know it’s available,” she says. Some residential homes for the elderly use it regularly, she adds. “It also runs every Monday on shopping trips to Queensgate, Porirua or Johnsonville shopping malls. “Pickups and drop-offs can be arranged for Mitre

10 and Malvina Major Rest Home and residents can be collected from their homes or at the Karori Mall. Karori Community Groups, encouraged by then-Wellington City Councillor Val Bedingfield mooted the idea back in 1990. “The community raised money.” Then, says Jane, a grant from Lottery Welfare and Trustbank in 1991, enabled them to buy a van and appoint a paid driver. There were some rocky moments, but they found ways of working, including using only volunteer drivers, and gaining sponsorship support. “With donations from users

the community bus has been able to keep going. “We are so grateful to our sponsors including Lion Foundation, St John’s Op Shop, Karori Rotary, Mobil station here in Karori, Karori Auto Services, Tustins the local panel beaters, and to others who help us.” “Karori groups may organise their own driver, who must be over 25 and have a current driver licence or we can organise one of our volunteer drivers for you,” says Jane. Anyone interested in using the Karori community bus can contact Jane on 476 8249.

She makes time in her own life to do some painting every day. “It’s my life. “Once you start painting, you find yourself looking at the world in a different way. “You see light and shadow instead of just colour, for example. You see paintings everywhere. “People. traffic, mountains, city scenes. Everything is paintable.” Term 4 classes will begin mid-October and you can find out more about the Karori Art and Craft Centre’s classes at their webpage at https://www.kacc. org.nz. Term 4 classes will begin midOctober.

Wadestown student Eva Robert ‘s story on Matariki hasn’t yet been published in the New Zealand school journal, but here in her happy place, the Wadestown School’s writing corner, she found an earlier edition with her cousin’s story in. PHOTO Glenise Dreaver.

Young writer celebrates By Glenise Dreaver

Wadestown School is celebrating with Year 8 student Eva Roberts. Her story, called Matariki, has been accepted for ToiToi, a New Zealand journal which is published four times a year. This publication features the work of young students throughout New Zealand. With 1500 contributions for the next edition, Eva was one of a few authors selected for the next edition. “I am really happy about this result,” she says.

Eva is a keen writer, being a regular attender at the school’s Writing Club run by teacher Nicki Greer. She has to be at the Writing Club by 8am. “Getting up that early is really hard for me,” Eva confesses. Because it is so early, the children take it in turns to bring something for breakfast, and share their food together. It was Nicki who sent in her writing and Eva is already thinking about her next piece to publish. “It is really cool to write and I am so thrilled to be a published author,” she says.

readers have their say... Find out the WORD on the Street. Question: Do you understand Brexit?

Brian Lecky Johnsonville “Not totally, I wish I understood more about it because it just seems more confusing the more I learn about it.”

Kiana Hamahona Newlands “No, never really heard about it but I know about the new Prime Minister.”

Kylie Lamont Newlands “I don’t think the people over there understand Brexit either.”

Russell Robinson Newlands “No, I don’t have a clue! Theresa came in and she was hopeless, then this other guy came in and he’s just as bad.”

Christine Nixon Tawa “It’s all very confusing. This is the backlash over history.”

Sam Tiller Newlands “The only thing I understand is that It’s the worst idea in the world. Very messy.”

EYE ON CRIME In Johnsonville the roller door of an internal garage of a house in Sheridan Terrace was forced open to gain access. A piece of wood was use to push the lock out of place and some hand and power tools were stolen. The interior of the house was not entered. In Newlands a gold Subaru Legacy stationwagon parked during the night in Miles Crescent had its left rear tyre removed and stolen. An attempt was also made to steal the

left front tyre. All four tyres were almost new having been fitted recently in a WOF inspection. A silver Honda Civic saloon parked overnight in Ruskin Road had its rear registration plate stolen as did a grey Subaru Legacy saloon, also parked in Ruskin Road. In Broadmeadows, residents returning after an overseas trip found that their house in Hindipur Terrace had been broken into and rummaged and searched

Huntleigh Home and Apartments

throughout. Drawers were tipped over and items scattered around. Entry was gained via a jemmied laundry window at the rear of the house. Jemmy marks on the front door suggest that this was the first place attempted for the break in. A list of stolen items has yet to be drawn up but it will include a laptop computer, jewellery items and a large number of other items. In Karori a liquor store in Parkvale Road was broken into via a jemmied window leading into staff bathrooms and coins from the till taken. T he ga rage of a house in Sunshine Avenue was entered through a forced door and petrol syphoned from a motor bike inside the garage. A similar incident occurred next door where petrol was siphoned from a garaged vehicle. In Braithwaite Street, a blue Ford Ranger utility vehicle parked overnight was broken into and the rear cab forced open. Batteries, chargers, and a large quantity of hand and power tools were stolen.

A silver Toyota Sprinter saloon, parked overnight in Allington Road, was found next morning held up by bricks. All four silver alloy CSA wheels and tyres had been stolen. In Wadestown a purple Nissan Tida hatchback parked overnight on the street in Grosvenor Terrace had the front passenger window broken. The intr uder reached in and searched the glove box but nothing appea rs to have been t a ken. The door of a free-standing garage in Barnard Street was found open during the day and a mountain bike had been stolen. In Ngauranga, an alarm was triggered at a property in Jarden Mile. Security attended and found that an upstairs window had been jemmied, but the burglary attempt had been abandoned. I n K a iw h a r aw h a r a a c a fé i n Kaiwharawhara Road was broken into. The front glass door had been smashed to gain entry and cash was taken from the till. Nearby, another commercial property had a hole punched in their front door. No entry was gained.

Support for the grieving offered by Suicide Loss Support Group By Glenise Dreaver

Nerys Foster of Newlands is a co-facilitator for a local group you may never have heard of. It’s the Suicide Loss Support Group, which only started some three months ago. It began in response to an identified and very serious local problem – a cluster of suicides. The issue was serious enough for a public meeting to be called in Newlands. Those attending included local doctors and representatives from schools, churches, Victim Support and other agencies as well as the bereaved. They heard from Dr Chris Bowden, a lecturer at Victoria University of Wellington, who is well regarded for his work and research on suicide prevention and support afterwards. One action point discussed that night was the need for a support group for those bereaved by suicide. So it began. The group meets for tnightly on Wednesdays, between 7-9pm, at the Newlands

Community Centre. Nerys says participants come from as far away as Hutt Valley, Tawa and Porirua. “That’s because, I believe, this is the only support group of its type in the Wellington area.” Grieving after a suicide is different, she says, to a death from natural causes. “There is a real stigma. Other people don’t know what to say, so they can give you a wide berth.” That’s one of the reasons grief can remain unresolved, whether the death is recent or decades ago. “On top of the sadness, the grief, there can be guilt, shame, anger, so many different emotions…” Those who attend the meeting are coming to a group where the other people “get it” and where it’s safe, Nerys says. “It’s so nice to be around people who understand. You can talk about your loved one, unburden, and hopefully go away feeling a little lighter.” Nerys says it doesn’t matter whether the bereavement is recent or decades ago, they welcome anyone who is on that “very different” grief journey.

"Something is rotten in the state of Denmark". Or rather, a little closer to home. The New Zealand Transport Agency appeared before select committee a fortnight ago to give a briefing on Let’s Get Wellington Moving. The Board of NZTA is the independent body which oversees and prioritises land transport investment across New Zealand. They decide how, where and when your fuel taxes are spent.

Nerys Foster, a facilitator with the newly-formed Suicide Loss Support Group, lost a good friend to suicide some two and a half years ago. She still has Rob’s book of poetry, given to her just before he died by suicide. Nerys had begun reading it, but finishing it has proved difficult. PHOTO: Glenise Dreaver

It was a shock, to say the least, when they confirmed to us that they were not involved in discussions as to the announced proposal for Let’s Get Wellington Moving. Those decisions as to what’s in, what’s out, what’s sequenced when, and what will be funded to what percentage from the National Land Transport Fund were made in the absence of the very agency charged with those responsibilities. Instead the decisions were made by the Minister of Transport

and a couple of local/regional body members (possibly with a side-letter from the Associate Minister.) NZTA confirmed that had they been included in those discussions they would have advised that the second Mt Vic tunnel be prioritised ahead of mass transit. That is reinforced by official documents, only recently released, which show that mass transit (particularly light rail) would, at best, offer only secondary benefits. Wellingtonians have been stitched up with a transport package which won’t solve our productivity challenges, will do almost nothing at all for private motorists and goods transport, and which will sting ratepayers with a $2.6 billion regional transport tax to pay for it. All that decided without the involvement of the agency responsible for delivering it. With news such as this, it’s worth reminding ourselves that a fish rots from the head.

New tours spring into action at Pūkaha this Spring!

Brian Hayes and wife Leang: medals awarded by the King of Thailand for their work in fundraising for landmine victims. PHOTO: Lauren Simpson. By Lauren Simpson

Brian Hayes, 72, completed the Christchurch Marathon in early June and walked away with his fifth title. It was the Karori local’s 34th marathon in 17 years. “I was looking to give up at 26kms,” says Brian. “I had a locked jaw and I was in a bad way.” Realising he had hypothermia, Brian went to stop at the next first aid station but could not find one. “Suddenly I only had seven kilometres to go, and ended up winning my age-group title. “Things like that just show that you should never give up,” says Brian. Brian has run marathons in Thailand, Australia, London and China. However, his favourite is closer to home. “It’s Waitarere. It is a beautiful track and a very community-focused race,” he says. His marathon running has also helped with his fundraising and volunteer work. He and his wife Leang were awarded medals by the King of Thailand in 2007 for their volunteer work against landmines. He realised how bad landmines were when tutoring Cambodian refugees in Wellington.

Civilians were affected by it more than soldiers, as the mines had been scattered erratically. So, when the Campaign Against Landmines started, he volunteered as treasurer and attended conferences globally. He was sponsored to run the Thailand River Kwai half marathon, which held additional significance for him, having been in the New Zealand Army. “River Kwai is where a lot of Kiwis died. My own father was down in that area,” says Brian. Leang also ran the River Kwai, and walked 50km to Porirua and back on her 50th birthday, to help with fundraising. “We raised over $2000 for victims to get a prosthesis, so they could have a leg to walk on,” says Brian. “The prosthetics there only cost $NZ25 because they are not charging labour and they are using recycled plastics. “It shows that if you are determined enough, you can do a lot for those people who are not so well off.” Now in retirement, Brian fills his days with local volunteering and just as much running. “I dare say I won’t put my running shoes away easily,” says Brian.

Boutique cinema has big appeal in Wadestown Wadestown library’s boutique cinema, which has been screening free movies on Thursday evenings over the past few months, is proving a hit with locals. Library team member Shinji Morimoto chooses a different theme for each month with a variety of genres being screened to fit the theme, from popular murder mysteries to iconic classics and modern comedies. During September the theme is True Stories about Incredible People, featuring several famous biopics about inspirational people. Copyright laws mean that the movie titles cannot be publicised in print, but patrons can ring the library to find out what is going to be screened on any particular week that month and can then reserve their seat.

Community centre advocate Louise Davies says locals have been really supportive of the initiative. “They are enjoying the opportunity to come along to their own branch library over the winter months to meet other residents over the free tea/ coffee and biscuits served before the screenings, which start at 5.45pm,” she says. For October the theme will be Around the World with Movie Nights, featuring a variety of movies set in iconic international cities. And to celebrate Senior Week during October 14-20, Shinji has chosen a beloved Audrey Hepburn/ Gregory Peck classic set in Rome. “Come along and join us for a taste of 1950s La Dolce Vita!” says Louise.

A memorable experience at the Royal The Royal’s an old hotel. If you listen, it’ll whisper to you tales from long ago, both good and bad. Epic tales of adventurers, dreamers, rogues and rebels – those who chose a different path. It will tell you about times past.

When weary travellers who’d crossed the Rimutakas could get a bed, a good meal and a drink before riding into the Wairarapa, the “land of glistening waters”. It will tell you of the times when steam power was king. When the

wondrous Fell steam engine was invented that pulled travellers up and over the ranges to The Royal. It will tell you of mysterious places and people, and of the characters that stay in the hotel rooms.

Celebrating her century By Brian Sheppard

Marguerite Hely, formerly of Khandallah, turned 100 at Churtonleigh on September 6, celebrating her special day with over 100 of her family and friends. There were so many that they overflowed the visitors’ lounge into the corridor. Nicci Ahrer, Churtonleigh’s facilities manager, hosted the party and said that Marguerite had a smile

on her face all day. She had many cards but particularly loved those from the Queen and Governor-General, and a hand-written note from Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. Nicci explains: “Being such a small rest home, we can embrace these celebrations on a very personal level. Residents, staff and family all celebrating together.” She added that it had been a privilege to host the cel-

ebration with Marguerite’s family. “It has involved a lot of st a f f i n pla n n i ng a nd helping out to make this day special. “Our kitchen manager, Vivian O’Connor, has had wonderful fun planning the afternoon tea menu and she hand-made everything, including the most beautiful cake”. Marguerite’s joy and youthful looks were an inspiration for everyone.

Churton Park Love Tennis weekend By Brian Sheppard

Over the weekend of September 7-8, 128 clubs around the country took part in a Love Tennis weekend, free of charge, to introduce more people to the sport. The Churton Park Tennis Club focussed on encouraging youngsters to have a go. Organiser Michael O’Connor described their thinking. “We know that tennis is fun

and we want to attract youngsters to share that experience. We want to deliver the message that tennis is a sport for everyone, regardless of age, culture or other background. All are welcome.” “Some people like to play competitively. We support them to do that but others just enjoy tennis as a social activity. We respect and cater for both.” About 100 children turned

out to try tennis, enjoy games, limber-up with a lolly scramble, share a barbecue and have fun. They clearly did! Having hea rd that the weekend was for everyone, Rosie (a two-month-old puppy) persuaded her human family to bring her along. Her person, Nicollette Walker, said that Rosie’s idea of tennis was just to bite the ball, but then … Nicollette got a hot dog. Rosie loves tennis balls, rather than tennis... and here she offers to help Nicollette eat that yummy hot dog.

Children try their hand at the nets at the Love Tennis open day at the weekend. Children limber up with a lolly scramble at the Churton Park Tennis Club.

Karori Lions celebrating fifty years of achievement Congratulations have been pouring in during this 50th Anniversary year for the Karori Lions Club, which is holding its anniversary dinner on Saturday night, September 14. President Joanne Knight says the club is a busy one, always finding new ways to serve the local community as well as fundraising for important services, including Mary Potter Hospice, Wellington Free Ambulance, the Foundation of the Blind and Camp Quality. “We have also done fundraising for the new Karori Event Centre.” An early, and massive, undertaking was clearing out the Wright’s Hill tunnels, says Joanne. “That culminated in opening the tunnels to the public.” “And there was also major work as part of a three-year-long district-wide project, clearing invasive species and planting native trees in the upper dam valley of the newly formed Karori Sanctuary, and later to build viewing hides and artificial islands.” Joanne says another innovation has seen them become one of three New Zealand Lions clubs managing the collection and processing of used spectacles and sunglasses for the Pacific Islands. And, she adds, to celebrate 100 years of Lionism worldwide, they worked with the Wellington City Council and the Otari-Wilton’s Bush team

Lions at work: The team of Lions working at the Zealandia Sanctuary from to right include Stephen Cook (Johnsonville) Davina Paverd, Peter Walker, Barry Lovegrove, Beth Anders and Peta Walker, all Karori Lions, Dave Guilde (Wainuiomata) and Colin Paverd, Karori. to establish the Lions Otari Plant Conservation Laboratory, now doing ground-breaking research into the preservation of threatened native plant species. Joanne is proud of members’ strong ties within the community. “These include local Scouts and Guide groups, the Karori Community Centre, the Karori Liaison Group, the primary schools in the valley and

nearby areas, the Karori Sanctuary Trust, Otari Wilton’s Bush and the WCC.” This focus sees the club remaining progressive and relevant in a time when many groups are struggling for membership in a changing society. Anyone interested in joining the club can contact the membership director Beth Anders on 021 264 1481.

with Jacob Page

Being a fan - the pointless pursuit of perfection Watching the All Blacks humble Tonga 92-7 in a glorified training run on Saturday made me get my head around the type of fan I am. Most “fans” would have been delighted their team had won by such a wide margin. Not me though. Maybe it’s the 12 years as a sports journalist allowing cynicism to take the joy of watching a game away from me but at

fulltime, my initial thoughts were two-fold. Why did we let them score? Why did we not score 100 points when we had 92 with 15 minutes to go? That’s right, like a greedy child at a lolly shop wanting more of the good stuff, I wanted more. Is that fandom? Is that being a fanatic? Probably not if I’m honest but being a fan of a sports team in my

view, allows me to both be super supportive and ultra critical. The saying is no one should have higher expectations for you than you do yourself and I’m like that with all my sports teams. I may be a one-eyed Cantabrian, but if the rugby team underperforms, I’ll be the first to voice it. The same goes with any team I follow. If you’re willing to invest your

time and money in a team, you have a right to be critical. Being a fan is different to being a cheerleader. Unfortunately, sometimes emotion in the moment out muscles common sense and that’s what happened with my All Blacks’ assessment on Saturday. It’s greed in a way, a constant pursuit of that sporting fandom nirvana. Perfect sporting seasons or

campaigns rarely happen but it’s what we all hope for. The reality is as fans we have little to no impact over the events of the on-field performance. A live crowd can make an intangible difference but that’s about it. Despite that knowledge, I’ll continue to support my team yelling at my screen in the hope they hear me one day.

North squeaks through unbeaten By Grant Stephen

It was far from vintage football at Weka Park in Raumati on Sunday when the North Wellington Women’s Premier team played Kapiti Coast United in the last catch up match of the year to end the winter season proper. It m ig ht h ave b e en t h e less-than-typical wintry weather, it might have been the fact that the North Wellington club’s prizegiving was the night before, or that younger members of the squad had been at college tournaments all week. Whatever the reason, North Wellington did just enough to come up with a 2-1 win and finish the season unbeaten. The first half was a lacklustre affair with the sides deadlocked at nil all. North Wellington roared into life in the second half with two quick goals to Ashley Mason and Ashleigh McCutcheon, the latter

being a long-distance lob over the KCU keeper who really had no chance at all. Five minutes before the final whistle, KCU drove a low level fast and furious shot which was always going to go in without any chance of being stopped. This was the final game in all regular season competitions across Capital Football leagues in the region. Even though the Men’s Central League was done and dusted weeks ago, the race is on to determine who will take the vacant spot left by Wellington United who were relegated through the promotion relegation system.

Men’s Premier League winners Petone travelled to play Havelock North Wanderers who were the top guns in the Central region. With each side playing home and away it was Havelock North who used their home advantage to pile on four goals against Petone before two late replies from the Wellington team. The return match at Petone this weekend will be intriguing, with Havelock North having the psychological advantage but the away goal rule also helping Petone’s cause. With both clubs hav-

ing played in the Central League in recent years, the bookies will be hard pressed to lay down the odds on what should be a very close encounter on Saturday at Memorial Park. And as we sign off our football coverage for the year, the concluding news is that the national women’s and men’s knock out competitions were decided at the

weekend and the trophies locked up in new cabinets for the summer. Eastern Suburbs from Auckland demolished Christchurch’s Coastal Spirit 4-0 in the Kate Sheppard Cup. In the men’s competition the Chatham Cup was eventually won by Napier City Rovers who overcame 10 men Melville United from Hamilton by three goals to two.
