Ahoy Me Hearties!

Fourteen-year-old Aidan Soper, who plays Smudgy Sam in Khandallah Arts Theatres next production, is delighted to be carrying on the family tradition of performing in a KAT Play-inthe-Park. “Mum (Michelle Soper) and dad (Dave Soper) have been in lots of them. They were both in the first one, 20 years ago. “In the 2009 play dad was a pirate too – but I think I’m a better pirate than he was!” Continued on page 2. Pirates let loose in Khandallah Park Continued from page 1. Dave’s not so sure about that but he does admit that Aidan’s Smudgy Sam is more endearing than his Jacques LaToe was. “Jacques was a rascal, while Sam is keen and willing.” What Aidan and Dave do agree on is why they enjoy performing for children. “I love getting them involved, and I love the comedy,” says Aidan. “Yes,” says Dave, “and I also love that you can “go off-script” sometimes – but,” he warns Aidan, “You have to know your part very, very well before you can try that.” This year’s Khandallah Arts

Theatre outdoor entertainment for families in Khandallah Park is ‘Mean Jean the Pirate Queen’. Mean Jean and her apprentice Smudgy Sam are looking for treasure, but they only have half a map. When two other treasure hunters turn up, madcap action ensues, with singing, swashbuckling and lots of humour. ‘Mean Jean the Pirate Queen’ is on in Khandallah Park for two shows a day, starting at 1.30pm and 3.30pm, on February 22 and 23 and then on February 29 and March 1. Admission is by donation. On days that are wet or very windy, the performances will be in

Cochran Hall, 106 Cashmere Ave. See KAT’s Facebook page on the day for venue-change information. In the morning of February 22 there will also be a a Community Picnic in the Park, starting at 11am. The 1.30pm ‘Mean Jean’ performance will start shortly after the picnic activities have concluded. Picnic goers are being encouraged to get into the spirit of the day and dress up as pirates. There will be a Pirate Fashion Parade and the opportunity to get a real pirate tattoo. Picnic organiser Nicola McFaull says there will be fun races and games, foods stalls, and entertain-

ment by Onslow College Music Department. “Khandallah Predator Free will be showing their work and we are hoping Wellington Water can show the Clarke Street Emergency Water Station,” she says. “And for those who want to swim entry to Khandallah Pool is free.” Nicola also asks anyone who would like to help on the day, to contact her on 0274 511 366. (Just a note for those who get carried away by pirates - International ‘Talk like a Pirate Day’ is on September 19 this year. If that date rings a bell, it also happens to be the date of the election.)

Wellington Mayor Andy Foster was the guest speaker at the first Karori Probus Club meeting of the year. Oodles of poodles

Wendy Jacobs and her family love their Oodles. So much so that four years ago, this Woodridge suburb resident started the Wellington Oodle Owners Family Facebook (WOOF) page. “It’s now grown to 780 members,” she says. What, you may ask, are Oodles? “Yes, you may well ask!” Wendy agrees, adding that they are any dog breed crossed with a poodle: “Cavoodles, Labradoodles, Schnoodles, Foxypoos, Spoodles, Groodles, Poodles, Maltipoos, and many more.” It was in April 2016 walking her own two dogs, Rusty and Mitsi, when she realised that they had been seeing a number of Oodle-type dogs when out and about. She researched and found the Wellington Oodle Meet-up page. “I immediately contacted the page owner Lucy and she joined ranks with the Facebook page as an administrator.” WOOF was promoted and shared on Facebook and posters were emailed to vets and pet shops.

“I set up regular monthly walks, going around the Wellington region. They were all well attended,” says Wendy. Membership stretches from Kapiti Coast right through to the Wairarapa, with outings in all areas. “In December 2018 we organised and ran our first Oodle Christmas Party which was attended by 30 dogs and their families. All ‘dogs’ paid a small fee which paid for toys for all. “This was so popular that the second one, in 2019, drew 50 dogs and families. “We also run special events, like a big walk from Waitangi Park to Oriental Beach for the last swim of the season and at these special events we fundraise for a chosen animal charity.” The oodles love to run and play together says Wendy, so walks are generally at off lead places. “We have made lots of friends since starting the ‘family’ and enjoy our weekend outings with like-minded people.” https://www.facebook.com/groups/ wellingtonoodleownersfamily/

The intruder had gone but had left the lever, which the occupant took indoors. Soon after, the intruder returned with a jack to force the door, but found himself without the lever needed to operate it.

By the time Police arrived, the intruder had, however, fled. And a wrench was left on the roof of a Toyota Atezza saloon parked overnight at the corner of Hutt Road and Sar Street which had a window smashed.

inbrief news Watch water use Wellington Water says residents need to cut back on water use. Recently, consumption has peaked at 183 million litres per day (MLD). The target is 160 MLD. As river supplies dry up, a Wellington Water spokesperson warns that demand is almost exceeding supply and sprinklers could be banned within days. Residents are asked to observe garden watering rules, use buckets to wash the car, or a broom to sweep the path, rather than the hose. Between September–April Wellingtonians are allowed one watering system (sprinkler, irrigation system, soaker hose, or unattended hose) between 6-8am and 7-9pm. Even-numbered houses can water on even dates and vice versa for odd-numbered houses.

SPCA call SPCA is calling for animal-loving volunteers across New Zealand to collect much-needed funds for animals during their 2020 Annual Street Appeal. These volunteers are asked to give two hours on Wellington’s streets between March 6-7 to raise funds for sick, abandoned, and abused animals. Pets are welcome to join in, with dogs, goats, horses, and even a llama and a chicken accompanying their owners in the past to encourage donations. Donations help SPCA Inspectors rescue animals, give them love, care, provide a warm bed at SPCA shelters, give them critical medicine and veterinary support, and help them find new homes with their forever families. One of ours on world stage By Glenise Dreaver

Former Onslow College student Taika Waititi made international headlines this week with his Oscar (Academy Awards) win for Best Adapted Screenplay. The film is ‘Jojo Rabbit’, which he wrote, directed and acted in, inspired by a book his mother Dr Robin Cohen, a senior tutor at Victoria University of Wellington, had given him. The book was Nelson writer Christine Leunens’ international best-seller ‘Caging Skies’. The film has been described as a satirical ‘black’ comedy, in which a small boy has Hitler as an imaginary friend, then discovers his mother has hidden Elsa, a Jewish girl, in the attic. (Elsa is Thomasin McKenzie, former Marsden College student: Independent Herald p. 1 December 26 2018). The concept was originally slated by critics, the Hitler-Holocaust theme, and the reflection on what war does to children, originally

seen as too politically challenging in a comedy, but audiences have responded enthusiastically. Who better to push the boundaries than Taika? Of Russian Jewish, Maori and Irish ancestry, he describes himself as a ‘Polynesian Jew’. And he dedicated his Oscar to “all the indigenous kids in the world who want to do art and dance and write stories. “We are the original storytellers and we can make it here as well.” It’s a while since our photograph of him was taken at the 2012 Brooklyn School Gala. Already famous for his 2010 film ‘Boy’, the school’s former student just turned up on the day, with wife Chelsea Winstanley, herself an award-winning film producer, and their very new baby. Stacey Bird was on the cupcake stall. “There were no cupcakes left!” she says, but she had the presence of mind to ask for a photo with him and Taika happily agreed.

Stacey Bird was delighted when very new dad Taika Waititi happily agreed to have his photo taken with her at the 2012 Brooklyn School Gala, even though she had run out of cupcakes. Photo supplied.

Historic farm visit By Brian Sheppard

The Onslow Historical Society visited the Forest Hill Farm, in the Ohariu Valley, as a Waitangi Day outing. Judy Siers, who organised the visit, explained that Forest Hill Farm has been farmed by the Hume family for over 150 years. They have maintained a strong interest in the history

of the farm and the surrounding rural community. When the Onslow Historical Society (OHS) was formed in 1968, Warren Bryant senior and Jim Hume joined the OHS committee. Jim’s son, John, and his wife Liz have continued the connection and so visits to the farm have been a regular feature on the OHS calendar. In 2018, the family erected

a bronze plaque on a boulder plinth half-way up to the top of Mt Kaukau. For this week’s field visit, John Hume led the OHS members to the plaque and shared some of the history of the area with them. What a day to go! The sun shone, there was hardly a breath of breeze and the stories of the past filled the air.

MPs arrived back in the House this week ready to get stuck into the large amount of legislation which needs to be passed this year. Those reviews our government conducted in our first year have given us the facts we need to ensure we are making the right decisions. Likewise with the massive infrastructure announcements where we will spend $12 billion on transport and other essential projects. We’ve reviewed what is best value for New Zealanders now and in the future and given many projects the go ahead. Four lanes from Otaki, bypassing Levin will remove the frustration of those long jams in the Horowhenua for one, the Melling interchange freeing Hutt traffic is another. I’m continuing to lobby for the Petone to Grenada Link Road which had to be redesigned following the Kaikoura earthquake.

in a good position to weather any economic effects of the Coronavirus which is impacting the Chinese and world economy. On the Coronavirus, Government and health authorities are doing everything possible firstly to keep the virus out, and secondly to be ready if it does arrive. Please listen to official advice and practice good hygiene.

There are still more projects to be announced as we catch up on years of underspend on regional roads.

Locally, I have been speaking with the police who have reassured me they are deploying extra resource to deal with criminal activity in our area. An important factor often missed when the local crimes are listed is that police catch many offenders, but that news is rarely reported. Be assured police are doing good work, so report any suspicious activity to them. I know from experience that solving crimes often comes from the smallest pieces of information; things like neighbours who seem to have lots of time and money but no apparent job, and people sitting around in cars for no obvious reason.

And all this while keeping the budget under control so we are

We all need to do our bit to stay safe.

5 tips to declutter without the guilt! Hope you all had a great long weekend! We managed to take the YIP Family out and catch some of the awesome festivals around and even did some tidying up around the house. Whether you are getting your property ready to sell or just wanting to Marie Kondo the crap out of your lives – there will always be the guilt of throwing away useable items. Unfortunately, too many things end up at landfill or worse, sneakily dumped outside opshops at night (and day). Most op-shops sadly throw away a lot of what they cannot sell. So, what eco-conscious options do you have? Apart from the obvious choices, here are 5 quick tips that you may not have considered.

2. Schools / Playcentres / Kindergartens – If you have good quality children’s resources, books, activities – check in with your local child education providers! Even if they don’t have immediate need themselves, most good operators donate their used items to other charity organisations for children in need. It is a great place to drop off that 80” TV Box you got at boxing day or if you are STILL recycling all those New Year’s beer bottles one recycling crate a fortnight. readers have their say... Find out the WORD on the Street. Question: What do you think of the state of education in this country?

Alisha Singh Churton Park

Andrew Jenkins Ngaio

“If they’re going to do internals, they need to make a national standard for all schools so they’re not weighted differently.”

“I think the way internals and externals are measured are different at each school. It makes it hard when universities are reviewing our grades.”

Sam Crampton Khandallah “We don’t have a huge density in the classrooms in Winnipeg, Canada, like here in New Zealand. It’s good for independent kids but other children can get distracted by the size.”

Shannon Rangi Newlands “I think it is pretty good with resources. I hope for free tertiary education in the future.”

Yanka Kimpton Broadmeadows “I don’t know much about education because my children are under the age of three so I’m not involved with it yet.”

Maggie Jenns Johnsonville “Pretty good but it could be better. Secondary students need more options for nonacademic subjects like trades.”

Local Police ask for help in car theft crimewave Anyone who has been following our weekly ‘Eye on Crime” column knows it has been a very busy start to 2020 for local Police, with multiple car thefts and break-ins featuring largely. “Unfortunately for some people it hasn’t been the start to the year they would have been looking for,” says Johnsonville Police Sergeant Sarah Riddering. “I want to reassure the community that we are aware of the

plea to local people. “You can help us to bring a stop to this criminal actively by ensuring you secure your car at all times and also by sharing any suspicious activity you see with us.” She adds that while it could sometimes seem that no action was taken on reports from the public, it is all recorded and analysed as part of the bigger picture that they need to apprehend offenders. “To keep your car and posses-

sions secure make sure you don’t leave anything of value in your car, always lock your car, and consider installing an alarm system and/or a steering wheel lock or clamp. “If you are able to, park near other cars and in places of public view.” Also call Police immediately on 105 if you notice anyone acting suspiciously around cars, taking note of as much information as you can, such as physical descriptions.

National List MP Nicola Willis of Karori, who has been confirmed as the party's candidate for Wellington Central electorate in this year's general election. She is also the party's spokesperson for Early Childhood Education and Youth.

In Johnsonville a Dominion Park Street home was entered through a forced rear window reached from a deck. An electric drill, a speaker, a laptop and a large quantity of games were stolen. A Honda motorbike parked overnight in a Frankmoore Avenue drive was stolen and later recovered, damaged, in Kilbirnie. A black Volkswagen Golf car parked overnight in a Clifford Road carport had both front and rear registration plates stolen.

A Mitsubishi Sport stationwagon parked overnight in an Ironside Road driveway had a radar detector taken through a smashed window. In Newlands a Ford Courier in Ladbrooke Drive was entered via a smashed window and several bank and ID cards were stolen. An attempt to use one of the cards at a Newlands service station failed. The cards were later recovered, together with two charity collection boxes unrelated to the incident, in an airport shuttle in Miramar.

A Subaru Legacy in Black Rock Road had the driver’s door jemmied and the ignition pulled out in a failed theft. A tradesman’s power tools were stolen from a vehicle in a Ruskin Road carport. In Khandallah a Subaru Legacy parked in Waru Street was stolen, but recovered in Ngaio. In Everest Street a Kia Sportage had valuable possessions stolen, and a Hyundai Santa Fe had a window smashed but nothing taken. The same applied to a

car parked in Barnard Street, Wadestown. The door of a Suzuki Alto parked overnight in Mandalay Terrace was jemmied and valuable posessions and cash stolen. In Northland a Toyota Hilux was stolen from Bedford Street, and so was a silver Mazda Familia in Garden Road. In Kaiwharawhara a high value bicycle was cut from the roof rack of a car parked for 15 minutes outside a café, and ridden away. There are photos.

Families’ safety at forefront of mind

Brett’s Brief National Party List MP based in Ōhāriu

By Brian Sheppard

Even more worrying are recent reports of attempted burglaries while people have been in their homes. Such crimes are traumatising for those who experience them and they make us all feel that bit less safe in our homes.

I am hearing stories from across the Ōhāriu electorate with concerns over increases in property crime which is leaving people feeling less safe.

Probus Johnsonville launched its 2020 meetings on January 30 with a talk on disaster preparedness. Chris Moore, Community Resilience Advisor for Wellington Region Emergency Management Office (WREMO) spoke to the group in the St John’s Church hall. Max Bowyer, the club’s president, said he wanted to begin the year’s programme with a significant topic for the community - our families’ safety. He was prompted by the disastrous effects of the Australian bush fires and because Wellington is still recovering from the effects of Kaikoura’s 2016 earthquake. Chris Moore explained that, after a disaster, services we take for granted may not be available for a few weeks and so everyone needs to begin planning to be self-sufficient for such essentials as medicines, food, water and shelter. Communities need to identify the risks they may face; the resources that might help; people likely to need help and those who could provide it, reminding those present that if we leave this for another day. It may be too late. The group, mainly retirees, meets on a regular basis to listen to interesting speakers and join together in activities. Max invites people to drop in or contact him for further information on 027 484 0766 or email maxjan@extra.co.nz

Police data shows theft, burglary and related victimisations rose nationally by over 13,000 in the year to November 2019. Reports on community noticeboards and to my office indicate that our share of those is increasing.

Drug use is acknowledged by Police to be a big driver behind property crime, which is why National’s committed to cracking down on criminal gang activity and the misery they peddle. One thing we’re considering is a specialised unit modelled on the successful Strike Force Raptor team in New South Wales, focused on supressing criminal gang behaviour.

We have seen a spate of car thefts around Newlands and Churton Park, and a marked increase in burglaries, and attempted burglaries, from Tawa through to Khandallah. A number of these burglaries appear to be the work of wellorganised groups, with not only trades vehicles being broken into, but also an entire container-load of builders’ equipment being stolen and an attempted break-in to a building supplies business in broad daylight.

PROBUS CLUB OF JOHNSONVILLE

Locally, I’m meeting with the Police Wellington Area Commander to discuss this growing problem, the trends Police are seeing and how they are responding to it and to public concern for their safety. In the meantime, if you, or someone you know has experienced crime, please get in touch and I will see what we can do to help.

Golden Shears mark 60th year milestone with free entry day Celebrating 60 years, the world’s premier shearing and wool handling championship, Golden Shears, is throwing a party with free entry on day one of the iconic event. With more than 530 unique stalls, it remains a family favourite day out attracting over 40,000 visitors annually. LOG BASKETS IN FEATHERSTON - Varying thickness of cane, shape, size and colour - Some lined with sacking - Measurements on request

By Dwyllis Maggs We spent half a day at Pukaha National Wildlife Centre in January. It’s not the first time we’ve been there because not only are there numerous aviaries where you can get close up to favourites like the white kiwi and the kaka at feeding time – we found there are also several interesting bush walks to meander through. This time we did the long loop track which takes up to two hours to the top of the hill through bush where you can hear and sometimes see the birds that have been released into the bush. It’s a nice wide easy incline to a rewarding panoramic view at the summit.

On the way back to the visitor centre we passed an enclosure which housed a pair of recently arrived saddlebacks. These friendly birds came right up to the front of the aviary and treated us to several tunes. We arrived at lunchtime so grabbed a bite from Kaka Cafe and went to sit on the deck. This offers good views of the takahe enclosure so we could watch them feed. We also had to keep an eye out for kaka who are fond of stealing food off your plate! A squirt of water is used to discourage them. There are plenty of opportunities for photos so be prepared to spend a few hours at Pukaha!

And there was LIGHT!

Skylight Specialists have been specialising in skylights for 25+ years. We have yet to come across a brand/make/type or configuration of skylight that we do not know everything about. Skylight Specialists is LBP (Government approved licensed building and roofing practitioners) , with 30+ years in the building industry and employ a highly skilled team which consists of trade qualified glaziers, roofers and builders. When we come and assess your skylight/s we will provide you with a free, no

obligation quotation. We will also provide you with a detailed report including photos that will include our findings and recommendations whether it be for general maintenance, repairs or replacement. At this time of year everyone is concerned about insulation of their homes, trying to keep warm and retain heat. Unfortunately, skylights are often overlooked, even when they can be sometimes the main factor of heat loss. Older skylights are sometimes full-time venting without the homeowner even being aware of this, which is no

different from leaving a window open 24/7. Others are only single glazed or just plastic. By upgrading to double glazing you can retain up to 70% more of your heat. A lot of skylights we come across is simply a piece of glass glued to the roof structure of your home – This is by far inadequate for many reasons including thermal properties and condensation issues, as the moisture has no where to go but get absorbed by the structure of your home. We will assess the entire skylight including the flashings (roof flashings

SPORTS TALK With Jacob Page

Absence puts Black Caps in good Stead Gary Stead’s preplanned sabbatical was handled shambolically by New Zealand Cricket. Fresh off a 5-0 thumping on home soil at the hands of India where the Kiwis slumped time and time again in pressure scenarios, this was the worst possible public relations follow-up. New Zealand Cricket chief executive David White said it was a case of avoiding burn out which was an

issue with Mike Hesson’s departure a year before the last World Cup. Unfortunately, it’s a bad optic for fans who see the team underperforming and their coach effectively running away at the worst possible time. Of course in his absence the team has won the one-day series showing resilience and fight that was sorely lacking when Stead was there. That very well could be coinci-

dence but it’s a bad look for the embattled coach and New Zealand Cricket. It’s hard to have much sympathy for Stead who lives close to the New Zealand Cricket base at Lincoln but is still suggesting he needs a break. The team’s regression under Stead has to be a concern. What has also been exposed by a combination of illness and

baffling selections has been the lack of depth amongst the domestic cricket ranks. There is a growing discontent amongst fans about Stead’s ability to do the job and concerns that Kane Williamson is the best leader across all three formats. If Stead is to go, and I don’t think he will in the short-term, then ex players like Stephen Fleming and Shane Bond will have to be under

consideration. If a change of captain is needed then Tom Latham is the best option as he is a sure selection in both test matches and 50-over cricket. Perhaps no longer having the leadership on his mind may allow Williamson to get the most out of his undoubted batting talent. These are times of change and moments of uncertainty amongst our summer sport for sure.

Break out that banana suit for Round the Bays More than 12,000 people will be taking over Wellington’s waterfront on Sunday morning for the Brendan Foot Supersite Round the Bays event. John Grieve, event director for the organisers Sport Wellington, says their youngest registered participant will be only four weeks old and the oldest will be 90. They will also try to break the world record for the most people dressed as fruit and vegetables. The current record, 888 people, was set in Japan, so break out that banana suit… Registrations are open until 4pm on Saturday February 15 for the 6.5km fun run/walk, 10km or half marathon event starting at Frank Kitts Park and ending at Kilbirnie Park. The course is buggy friendly, wheelchair friendly and kids under 12 can ride scooters.

The Globelet Half Marathon begins at 7.45am, the Bluebridge 10km at 8.30am, Fiji Airways 6.5km run/walk at 9.15am along with the NZCT Active Families and Pak’n Save Buggy Walk 6.5km events. Entertainment and motivation is provided along the way and, once finished, participants can relax with family and friends at the Finishers Festival with live entertainment, children’s activities, a selection of food trucks and thousands of dollars worth of spot prizes up for grabs. There will be free shuttle buses from Kilbirnie Park to Wellington Railway Station, while some road closures and detours are in place for vehicles and cyclists from 6.30am to approximately 1pm. These are outlined on the event website. Register online at www.wellingtonroundthebays.co.nz
