Onslow-Western ward Wellington City councillor, Diane Calvert has reiterated her support for the future of Khandallah Pool after its forced closure for several days last week.

The community pool has to be closed for several days after the correct chlorine could not be sourced

to ensure the water was safe for swimmers.

The closure on hot days in the middle of the summer holiday period lead many to speculate Wellington City Council was angling to close the pool.

However, Diane has confirmed she and council remain committed to the future of the facility.

Khandallah pool gets support after chlorine issue Continued from page 1.

“I have spoken with senior staff about the unexpected temporary closure of the pool over the past few days.

“Like me and you, the Wellington City Council pool team are gutted about what has happened.

“Focus has been on getting the right chlorine product, different to the other pools in the city and region because the Khandallah pool has a different system to others.

“I have been assured that the supply chain has now been resolved along with double supplies ordered for greater reserves,” she says.

“Obviously this also highlights the issues with the very old plant and equipment for the pool, some which was last installed in 1966.

“There is a full report due to come to Council in early February about the long term improvements required for the pool.

“I will also ask for a report on the recent operational issues to be presented at the same time.

Diane says she had heard public concerns the pool may be permenantly closed.

“Before Xmas, I met both with the CEO and Chief Customer Officer and both have assured me this is not the case.

“In fact the formal public report coming to Council in February will give a range of options for the pool.

Diane says the report will provide clarity on how much money is needed and what areas need improving in the 97-year-old pool.

“It’s hard to go out and ask the public to help with funding without having a clear idea of what needs to be improved.

“I’ve said many times that I won’t see the pool closed on my watch.”

“I am absolutely committed to ensuring that the pool is upgraded ready for its 100th anniversary in 2025.

Nick honoured for decades of digging into the past

A trio of North Wellingtonians have been recognised in the New Year’s Honours List.

Wilton’s Nick Perrin received a Queen’s Service medal for services to historical research.

Nick has researched detailed records of deaths and burials in Wellington from the first 50 years of colonial settlement on a voluntary basis.

He has been in a volunteer member of the Friends of Bolton Street Cemetery for almost 40 years. He is a current member of the management committee, a committee member since 1989, President from 1990 to 1999 and was newsletter editor from 1992 to 2006. As a volunteer

researcher, he led the creation and development of a database of detailed historical records, providing 8,500 names, death and burial records to Wellington City Council (WCC) in 1997.

Over the past 25 years he has

continued to verify names and details and helping hundreds of people with ancestral information enquiries. He created a detailed map plotting the original graves in the Cemetery and recorded information on the 3,700 people whose remains had to be moved for the construction of Wellington’s urban motorway in the 1960s.

He says the acknowledgement has been a huge thrill.

“It feels great and I’m surprised and quite gratified that someone felt fit to nominate me.

“When I first saw the email, I thought it was a scam but when I looked closer I could see it was genuine,” he says.

“It also started when my sister got interested in our family genealogy about 40 years ago and she asked me to try to find out Great Great Grandfather in the Bolton Street Cemetery.

“I approached the Friends of Bolton Street Cemetery and a committee member told me they had no idea as there was no headstone but he encouraged me to come down to their AGM. “I went down, got grabbed to be on the committee, got voted

in and I’ve been on it ever since.

“Meanwhile my Great Great Grandfather is still lost somewhere in Bolton St Cemetery.

“Since then, I’ve been wrestling with the various registers, correcting mistakes, admissions and trying to make sense of it all.”

The reason the job was so vital was that when the motorway went through the cemetery in the 1960s, it was done on the condition that those people affected by the move would have a suitable monument erected where families could gather to remember them.

“Of course, records were so poor that we spent 15 or 20 years trying to put together the best list that we could.

“It’s never been an easy task,” Nick says. “Like trying to find a needle in a haystack at times but I’ve always found it interesting.

“It’s amazing finding out who the buried people were, what they did and I think they should be remembered.

“When descendants ask for information, I take great pride in being able to tell them anything I have been able to glean,” he says.

New Year’s nods for champion of Maori education Dr Arapera Royal Tangaere has been championing 0Ɨori education and early childhood education for more than 40 years.

Dr Royal Tangaere has been the voice of Te .ǀhanga Reo National Trust since 1982. As a National Advisor and Manager with Te .ǀKanga Reo National Trust for 26 years, she has enhanced learning for children, providing quality oversight of both the curriculum and teaching qualifications.

With the Trust she has been instrumental in the growth of the Te .ǀKanga Reo movement, the total immersion in MƗori language and values for preschool children, from fewer than ten early childhood centres in 1982 to more than 463 across New Zealand and Australia today.

She has helped the Trust work with the Ministry of Education, without compromising the kaupapa of Te KǀKanga Reo.

She has been a key contributor to the Te Kǀhanga Reo curriculum, with some South Pacific nations adopting the curriculum model and other international representatives visiting to learn more.

As a representative of the trust, Dr Royal Tangaere has been appointed to various government early childhood education working groups to encourage all families to utilise Te KǀKanga Reo.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is advising motorists to plan for southbound closures of State Highway 1 between Churton Park and Johnsonville for gantry installation and cable hauling, as preparations for Transmission Gully continue The southbound motorway lanes will be closed on Wednesday 19th, Thursday 20th, Wednesday 26th and Thursday 27th January from 7pm to 5:30am each night to install a large gantry across the motorway.

Mark Owen, Waka Kotahi Operations and Maintenance Manager, says the work is helping prepare the region’s transport network for the opening of Transmission Gully.

“We’re doing a huge amount of work to improve and provide people with the right information as they use it. This includes increasing the CCTV capability, improving signage, and extending southbound variable speed limits on State Highway 1 between Tawa and Johnsonville so that we

are ready for the new motorway.

“It’ll allow us to keep a closer eye on how the network is flowing and ensure that we’re getting the right information to people, as soon as possible, to help them on their journeys.”

The closures are to install a cantilever gantry, a steel overhead beam spanning the width of the southbound motorway lanes, which will hold large electronic signs.

Southbound traffic will detour via the Churton Park offramp, Westchester Dr, Middleton Rd, Johnsonville Road, and return to SH1 via the Johnsonville southbound onramp.

The Churton Park offramp and onramp will also be closed to southbound traffic for scheduled cable hauling. The Churton Park offramp will be closed between 7pm and 5:30am, Monday 10 January to Tuesday 18 January. The Churton Park onramp travelling southbound will be

Bronwyn’s challenges bring reward

Bronwyn Hayward, an advocate, battler and voice for the disabled community has been recognised for her life time of work in the New Years Honours list and is to be an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

Bronwyn was born with the spinal condition diastemietiamyelia and has been a life-long advocate for vulnerable persons, disability issues and mental health in both paid and voluntary capacities.

Getting the letter asking if she would accept the award Bronwyn says she didn't hesitate to say yes.

“I was pretty excited and had no idea I was being put forward for it,” she says.

Her achievements over the decades are legion and her approach has always been to represent her people and never give up no matter how long it takes.

She has furthered inclusivity for disabled people in the arts, as a dancer with national mixed ability dance troupe Touch Compass and advocated for many years setting up an integrated mixed ability dance company in Wellington.

Bronwyn wrote, produced and starred in the short dance film ‘Beauty’, supported

by New Zealand Ballet and wrote Dance Aotearoa New Zealand’s Disability and Dance Strategy in 2010. She has volunteered with CCS – Disability Action, Disability Rights Promotion International, Disabled Persons Assembly (DPA), Youthline, and New Zealand Disabled Skiers. She drove the establishment of a network of disability

She has coordinated International Day of Disabled People events and organised a New Zealand Disability Pride Week red carpet function in 2017. She co-wrote and presented ‘Inside Out’, a TVNZ show raising awareness of disability issues running from 1996 to 2006.

Bronwyn says she saw the logic in having a person of disability among the upper level of decision makers for DHB's and spent a huge amount of time attending meetings asking questions until she was heard and understood.

She has designed and led disability youth leadership programmes, undertaken accessibility inspections and reports, worked with DHBs on disability strategies and facilitating disability community engagement and liaison. Ms Hayward was Disability Support Counsellor at Victoria University of Wellington, expanding the services offered.

Sian representing New Zealand at biggest young chef competition in world Later this month Wellington Institute of Technology Ltd (WelTec) student Sian Davis will represent New Zealand in the 8th annual Young Chef Olympiad (YCO) event.

YCO is the biggest culinary event in the world for young chefs, and for the past five years students from WelTec have represented New Zealand in competition. 60 countries will compete this year and the competition will take place virtually, making it the largest ever virtual culinary competition.

Sian is about to graduate with a New Zealand Diploma in Cookery (Advanced) (Level 5). She was the commis chef for last year’s WelTec competitor Jess Hoskins, who achieved an incredible result of 3rd in the world. Sian thinks the experience from helping Jess has put her in good stead for taking over as the lead contestant.

“I learnt a lot of tips and tricks assisting Jess that are going to help me compete this time,” says Sian. “I’ve been practicing and preparing non-stop for weeks so I’m feeling good about things. It’s a lot of extra work but it is worth it to compete on the world stage.”

Sian moved to Wellington from Queenstown in 2020, and thinks the change has been beneficial for her cheffing career.

“Wellington has such a rich food culture I knew it was the place for me,” explains Sian.

“WelTec has taught me so much. The tutors are dedicated and always ready to help, and we’re taught to master the basics first and create a solid cooking foundation, before we then go into more technical cooking that takes us to a really high level. It’s a great way to learn.”

excellence on a global platform, and provide valuable high-pressure experience to talented young chefs.

“Competing in events of this size is great for everyone involved,” says Scott.

“As tutors we bring back experience and new ideas that help inform our programmes, and we get to show the innovations and high quality work of our students.

“Employers also keep a close eye on results, and competitors find themselves in hot demand in the New Zealand hospitality industry. Last year’s competitor was hired to work in one of the judge’s restaurants after the competition.”

Sian’s philosophy is to make great food that can be enjoyed by as many people as possible.

“I think everyone should be able to taste delicious food whether you’re vegetarian or have other dietary requirements. I try to cook food that anyone can experience.”

The Young Chef Olympiad begins on January 31.

Wellington sailor continues family tradition It was almost inevitable that Shannon Williams was going to join the Royal New Zealand Navy.

With a father, two cousins, an uncle and two grandfathers who have all served or are currently serving in the Navy, following in family footsteps was an obvious career path for someone looking for a role that combined adventure with diversity.

Midshipman Williams, 23, graduated on December 18 after 22 weeks of Junior Officer Common Training (JOCT) at Devonport Naval Base.

Born in Sydney, while her father Commodore Mat Williams was posted there, she was educated at Wellington Girls College and studied Science at Victoria University with a Postgraduate Certificate and Masters in Antarctic Science. But while she enjoyed the study, the academia route wasn’t going to fulfil her greater purpose.

“I love the environment and science and I love the fact that the Navy facilitates partnerships with government agencies like Department of Conservation and GNS Science. This offered the best of all worlds to me.”

Her five-and-a-half-month JOCT 21/2 course started in July, barely a month before the COVID-19 (Delta) lockdown took effect.

“That was super challenging not seeing my

family for that length of time,” she said. “But it made us a stronger group. We got through it just by being there for each other. I genuinely call my JOCT group my second family now.”

Following her graduation, Midshipman Williams has been posted to HMNZS Canterbury for two months before starting her Basic Officer of the Watch course.

The ‘Bravos’ course covers bridge watch keeping and navigation which she was particularly looking forward to.

As a Warfare Officer, she’ll be at the forefront of command. Warfare Officers work on the ship’s bridge, control the ship’s manoeuvring, are responsible for the safe passage and navigation of the ship at sea, and manage the bridge staff.

She recognised it was early days in her career but she was excited about what she had already achieved and the opportunities on the horizon.

“What I’ve learnt so far is how I can grow as a leader and an individual and understand what is unique about myself and what I can bring to the Navy.”

Her advice to others thinking about a career in the services was typically buoyant.

“Of course it’s scary – but life is too short to be stagnant. You only have one, so use it to do the most exciting things you can, while getting paid to do them.”

Black Caps rightly banged by Bangladesh My hat is off to the inspired Bangladesh cricket team for their first test win over New Zealand at Mt Maunganui last week.

The touring team completely outplayed the Black Caps in every facet of the test at Mt Maunganui and deservedly earned their first ever taste of success on New Zealand soil.

Like many, including myself, I thought a 2-0 series win was a fait accompli, unfortunately,

the Black Caps played with that mindset and were deservedly and thoroughly beaten.

There are several major concerns coming from the test.

The all-conquering Kiwi seam attack were not able to get the ball to do as much as their Bangladeshi counterparts.

The Bangladeshi bowlers got more seam movement, more swing and reverse swing consistently throughout the game and

got the rewards.

The other issue was the Black Caps middle and lower-order batting which showed little application in either innings.

New full time wicket-keeper Tom Blundell should already be feeling pressure on his spot.

The Wellington gloveman’s work behind the stumps was average at best, with former captain and keeper Brendon McCullum mentioning it a couple of times

on television commentary.

Blundell has also only averaged 12 with the bat in his last seven tests.

You don’t need to be a cricket tragic to realise that is horrible for a No 6 batsman.

The test side continues to struggle for a genuine all rounder in the No 7 position.

They cannot blood youngster Rachin Ravindra in that role if Blundell continues to fail ahead

of him.

Equally, Ravindra must score runs and be a threat with his spinners, none of which he managed in the opening test.

It’s easy to say Ajaz Patel should have been picked in hindsight, the reality seems to be that a lethargic and uninspired Black Caps team, minus leader Kane Williamson were taught a test cricket lesson.

They were essentially banged by the Bangers and deserved it.

Johnsonville earn crucial win over Taita Johnsonville started the new year off on the right note with a vital Ewen Chatfield Trophy one-day competition victory over Taita at Fraser Park on Saturday.

The five-wicket win kept Johnsonville right in the hunt of making the final on January 24 with two rounds to go.

Johnsonville’s heroes came from two unlikely sources in spinners Kevin Weerasundara and Connor Lusty who each took three wickets to help skittle Taita for 149.

As has been the issue so far this season, Johnsonville’s top-order wobbled in trying to chase the target.

A run-a-ball 55 from Gareth Severin proved the catalyst during the run chase.

Devan Vishvaka added 30 as Johnsonville went past the target in the 36th over.

Johnsonville captain Rakitha Weerasundara says the win meant

they controlled their destiny.

“Big win for us, especially against a good team like Taita.

“The pitch was quite low and slow and I thought Connor and Kevin bowled really well, kept the pressure on and got rewarded.

“It wasn’t an easy pitch to get started on and I guess our scorecard suggests that but the win means we control our own destiny.”

Wins against Onslow and Karori will confirm their spot in the decider.

In other results; Onslow beat Upper Hutt by 44 runs thanks to 114 from Sam Keegan.

Eastern Suburbs beat Karori by nine wickets, easily chasing down 119 for victory.

This Saturday will see Taita host Eastern Suburbs at Fraser Park, Onslow host Johnsonville at Nairnville Park and Karori welcome Upper Hutt to Karori Park.

Johnsonville spin twins Connor Lusty and Kevin Weerasundara combine for six wickets to give Johnsonville victory over reigning champions Taita.

Colgate Games a hit in the capital

Johnsonville’s Olympic Harriers junior athletes had a successful weekend at the North Island Colgate Games over the weekend at Newton Park.

More than 1200 athletes ran, jumped and threw their way to success at the North Island Colgate Games at Newtown Park over the weekend.

This year, 75 clubs participated in the event – with the largest team of 54 participants from Wellington’s Olympic Harrier Club.

Colgate General Manager, John Garside, says the Colgate Games have encouraged generations of young New Zealanders to give athletics a go.

“We’ve been going for more than 40 years and each year we create new friendships and memories for the athletes and their families.

“The experience gained at the Colgate Games will help set these young athletes up for success, no matter where they finish in their chosen event.”

With an emphasis on participation over the weekend, it is hoped many of these young athletes can become Olympians of the future.
