Excio continues to share community values Continued from page 1 The Wellington Gold Awards celebrate excellence and enterprise of businesses in Wellington since being established in 1999.

Excio chief executive Ana Lyubich says it was an honour for her team to be recognised.

“It is great to be recognised at such a level especially when you look at the quality of the past winners,” she says.

“Excio is a community driven library backed by our community of photographers and it delivers fresh, high quality, authentic photographs while making sure photographers are fairly treated,” she says.

Excio aims to ensure there is more transparency for photographers on how and where their photos are used and ensures they are paid accordingly.

“We set ourselves a mission to challenge the mindset of image users and photographers to make sure they are aware of the need for authentic photographs and fair rewards.

“Having a community-led library and receiving this award means the world to us because it recognises our community efforts as well as raises awareness and reach,” she says.

The Gold Awards are held annually in TSB Arena, Wellington and are attended by 900 plus guests, including Members of Parliament, the region’s Mayors and many business leaders.

COVID and winter ills cause major bus disruptions Metlink says two of the biggest bus operators in the region have been hit hard by a wave of COVID and seasonal sickness, with hundreds of drivers affected.

Passengers across Metlink’s Hutt and Wellington City services have felt the worse of it with almost 800 cancellations on Tranzurban and NZ Bus services last week.

Samantha Gain, General Manager for Metlink, says her team are working closely with operators to reduce the impact on passengers.

“We are right alongside our operators, supporting them to make good decisions so when we absolutely have to make cancellations we can try to make sure that we target trips where passengers have alternative services. Our Metlink drivers have shown immense commitment to our communities over the past few years to keep our public transport network operating and we thank them sincerely.

“We’re incredibly thankful for the support, understanding and kindness that’s being shown by

passengers to drivers despite the number of cancellations. They understand that bus drivers provide a valuable public-facing service, “ she says.

Jay Zmijewski, Chief Operating Officer at NZ Bus, says his depots have been hard hit across the country.

“Whether you work in one of our offices or out on the road COVID unfortunately finds a way to disrupt journeys. In the past we’ve put ‘planned cancellations’ in place so passengers know which services will turn up and which won’t but COVID takes that out of our arsenal as we don’t know how many more drivers will be hit with COVID until this wave is over,” says Jay Zmijewski.

“Many families are being hit hard by the latest wave of COVID, flus and colds and bus drivers are no exception. We hope the peak will be over soon but we’re working with

Despite moves from Metlink to increase driver wages and conditions in the last year there is an underlying shortage of 120 drivers in the region.

People of Wainuiomata Dear Editor, If you need Real Celebrities and Heroes, turn your eyes towards those who save your lives. Volunteer services rush to people’s aid every day. Yes they get thanked by those who respect them and abused by other types.

I have heard of Medics getting attacked and Firefighters having stones and other missiles thrown at them. The Police get attacked.

If these people gave up serving the Community People would die in greater numbers with no one to help them..

Accidents & House fires & Car

Fires, Shootings and People lost in the bush etc.

The Police get paid over here but the Ambulance run by donations.

The Fire Service are Voluntary.

So are a lot of clubs who go out to help search for Idiots who go into the bush with no gear..

These people are the Real Heroes.

Treat them with Respect I do.

I too was one of these people who served the community as a volunteer.

I thought I would let you know before my time on earth runs out.

Potatoes: By Wally Richards

Once upon a time when the world was a much better place and people could afford to buy a quarter acre of land and build a house for their family to grow up in and enjoy the benefits of those days 50 to 100 years ago.

(You only have to think back to see how bad things have become in more recent years. ) Well the first thing that a young married man would do with the land would be to plant a crop of potatoes.

This served two purposes it would help break up the earth for future gardens and lawns plus a bounty crop of potatoes to store and use.

Now days because of the dread potato psyllid you need to plan and plantings of potatoes and later on tomatoes or use controls to combat the psyllid.

If you had psyllids last season and did not use the Cell Strengthening products you will have worse problems this season.

With potatoes there is a way to get a early crop in and out before the plants are attacked.

Psyllids are temperature controlled and when too hot like over 35 degrees or too cool like under 15 degrees they are slow to reproduce.

When the temperatures are ideal for them they produce in the hundreds and thousands.

When the feed on the foliage they inject a toxin into the potato plants which will prevent the baby tubers from growing bigger than a marble or if the tubers have reached a reasonable size then you find in the

harvested potatoes dark rings and they taste bad.

Early planting is a way around the problem and the way to do this is: Dig a trench about one and a half spade depth.

Place your sprouted potato on top of the following at the base of the trench, about a table spoon of gypsum, quarter a teaspoon of BioPhos a few sheep manure pellets and a sprinkling of Wally Neem Tree Powder.

Sprouts should facing skywards. Use a little soil to cover the sprouts.

The soil protects against any frosts and possible early emergence of psyllids.

Now this is most important you need to check frequently the crop and as soon as the new sprouts pop though the cover add a little more soil to re-cover.

You keep doing this till until your trench is filled level with the soil.

Then you start mounding up to keep the sprouts covered.Not only will this be adequate protection from late frosts but will increase the size of your crop.

The new potatoes will form all the way up the haulm of the potatoes you planted as long as you covered the sprouts as they appear.

If you dont then once the spouts get up a few inches out of the ground you will not obtain any extra potatoes to harvest.

Growing quick maturing potatoes now should have them mature and ready to harvest before the temperatures rise and the psyllids come out to play.

When you stop mounding sprinkle Wallys Neem Tree Powder as a side dressing each side of the row.

When the crop is mature than either lift so the tubers are safe or if you leave them in the ground removed the top foliage and cover the stubble with soil so there is nothing for the psyllids to attack.

Ideally the above could have been done in the middle of winter like in May/June.

The earlier the better.

Any late crop of potatoes planted say about Labour Weekend will likely be doomed to failure once the tops are exposed and before maturity.

To overcome this possibility then you Need to use Wallys Cell Strengthening kit to make the cells of the plants so tough that the nymphs can not piece to feed.

This means about the time of planting the seed potatoes and started covering then a soil drench of Wallys Silicon and Boron soil drench.A send drench can be applied about the time you stop mounding.

Then a weekly spray of the foliage with Wallys Silicon Cell Strengthening Spray with Wallys Super Spreader added which drives the spray into the plants.

Use those products and your should be able to have later crops with no psyllid damage.The same products should be used for your tomatoes, capsicums, chili, garlic and tamarillos.

I also like to add Magic Botanic Liquid to the cell strengthening spray for greater results.

Karori Community Book Fair returns in August After two years of lockdowns and covid restrictions impacting on public gatherings, the Karori Community Book Fair is back on and will be held at the Karori Baptist Church on 5-6 August.

This year’s Fair is being led out by the Karori Lions Club with support from the Rotary Club of Karori.

The times for the Fair are Friday 5 August 12 noon to 8pm and Saturday 6 August 9am to 4pm.

WANTED Southern Remutaka Aerial Possum Control Operation EcoFX wishes to advise the public of its intention to aerially apply the toxin Sodium Fluoroacetate (1080) for the purpose of controlling possums in the Remutaka Ranges. The operation is being undertaken as part of OSPRI New Zealand’s TBfree programme to protect local farms from tuberculosis infection.

Control Area The Southern Remutaka treatment area is located in the Remutaka Ranges. The block extends from Wainuiomata in the north, to the bottom of the North Island (Turakirae Point in the south). It includes sections of East Harbour Regional Park to the west and extends from Coast Road over to Ocean Beach in the east.

This includes portions of the Remutaka Forest Park. Treatment areas run along both sides of the Orongorongo river.

A detailed map of the treatment area may be viewed by appointment at the Upper Hutt office of Greater Wellington Regional Council, or the Masterton office of the Department of Conservation.

Commencement Date Non-toxic cereal pre-feed pellets were applied to the treatment area on 23rd June 2022. The application of cereal pellets containing 1080 will commence in the next fine weather window following the school holidays (after 24th July 2022).

Bait Description Pre-feed: Cereal based pellet, approximately 16mm diameter & brown in colour. Toxic bait: Sodium Fluroacetate (1080) – cereal based pellet, approximately 20mm diameter & dyed green with an application rate of 2kg per hectare.

Precautions The public are reminded of the danger that toxic baits and possum carcasses pose, particularly to children and dogs. Children should be kept under strict supervision in the operational area.

Dogs should be kept under strict control at all times and not have access to or be taken into the operational area as they are particularly susceptible to 1080 and poisoned carcasses.

Poison warning signs will be erected at all points of public access and the public are reminded that it is an offence to remove any of these signs.

Wainuiomata grind past Pare-Plim in Hardham Cup

Wainuiomata booked their place in the Hardham Cup rugby semifinals after a gritty 14-10 win over Paremata-Plimmertona at Ngatitoa Domain, on Saturday.

It was the second week in a row Wainuiomata overturned a losing effort against a team earlier in the

season.

Coach Daniel Smith says his team showed plenty of heart.

“We just kept giving it our all and that’s playoff rugby,” Daniel says.

“Can you get up and make a tackle with mud in your eyes and you’re struggling to breathe - we did.

“I’ve called this Hardham Cup our ‘Revenge Tour’ and that seems to be working for us.”

Wainuiomata had a strong breeze at their backs in the first half and made use of it to the tune of 11-0 at halftime.

A try from left winger Renata Kotuhi and two penalty kicks from flanker Matt Jacobs earned the advantage but Daniel says he was never comfortable.

“I thought it was a 25-point wind but I also felt if we could keep the

game in the middle of the field that we could control the game.”

Daniel also praised his experienced players for keeping the younger ones calm in the big moments.

“Playoff footie is about controlling emotions and understanding that momentum shifts between the two teams and I think we were able to remain calm.”

Wainuiomata will now travel to the Polo Grounds to take on Oriental Rongotai.

Daniel says another big defensive effort will be needed.

“We’ve scored points against them but we have to figure out how to stop them scoring 50 points on us,” he says.

“We’ll go in with confidence that we can cause an upset.”

Wainuiomata Roundballs score nine With it being the Chatham Cup round and sickness still lurking around the place, only five of the Wainuiomata sides were in action over the weekend.

The Reserves were looking to give captain Scott Ellis a birthday present to remember as they welcomed Island Bay for their Capital 3 clash.

After a positive and dominant start by the home side, they took the lead when Isaac Harper rose the highest to get on the end of a cross and put the ball in the back of the net.

The lead was short-lived though as a bit of bad luck handed the away side an equaliser.

A brilliant tackle by Jet Zawada was deflected off Joel Ashforth and trickled past Sefton Salmon who couldn’t react in time.

The second half began and Wainuiimata pressed and dominated looking for their second goal but Island Bay did what is well known as parking the bus.

Unable to break through the defence, Island Bay hit on the counter attack and managed to finish their chance as the game finished 2-1 to the visitors.

The Roundballs visited Vic Uni

and despite a delayed start due to a clash in the kits, the Roundballs showed no mercy as they thrashed their opponents 9-1.

Pelosi Luka scored a hat-trick and Nic Vryenhoek finally managed to break his curse in front of goal.

The Horns were 3-0 winners against Wellington United, thanks to a default five minutes before kick off.

In the Masters grades, The Undertakers benefited from an explosive first half. 3-0 up at the break thanks to a double from Jamie Patmore.

Things slowed down a bit in the second half.

They managed to get another goal to add to their tally and they walked away 4-0 winners.

Pasifika remain undefeated this season as a trip over the hill to Brooklyn ended in a 2-2 draw thanks to goals from Arjun Goundar and Billy Sharan.

Finally the OC’s closed things off against Brooklyn in the typical Wellington wind.

was continuously disrupted. In the end, the away side left the happiest as they were 3-0 winners.

Love, Umaga-Jensen make Wellington Lions squad The Wainuiomata duo of Ruben Love and Peter Umaga-Jensen have been named in the 32-man Wellington Lions squad for the national provincial rugby championship.

With a mixture of youth and experience, the side features eight players who’ve played for the All Blacks, including brothers Julian and Ardie Savea, and 22 current or former Super Rugby players.

New to the side for 2022, OrientalRongotai loosie Sione Halalilo joins New Zealand U20s midfielder Riley Higgins as part of a new generation of talented Wellington youngsters looking to make their mark in provincial rugby. Petone loosie Peter Lakai and MSP lock Josh Toómaga join the side on a full-time basis after debuting in 2021.

“Peter and Riley are both talented

young men. We are thrilled to give them the recognition of being fulltime Lions. We are looking forward to their continued development, and I am sure they will hit the ground running and are excited to get out on the field in the Lions jersey.”

Following long-term injuries – Tawa’s Pepesana Patafilo and two-metre lock Dom Bird return to the side, having spent time on the side lines early in 2022.

Nehe Milner-Skudder joins the Lions after winning Major League Rugby with Rugby United New York.

“It will be great to have Nehe in the environment following the Major League Rugby final in the States. He spent pre-season in the Hurricanes camp, so he has a good connection with a lot of the guys already. He will be a good fit and brings a wealth of knowledge,” said Crowley.

Now in his third season at the helm, Crowley is looking forward to the upcoming NPC campaign.

“I am excited with the calibre of players we have this season.

There is plenty of fresh energy to complement the seasoned players, and we’re looking forward to the season kicking off.”

Whilst the squad has now been officially named, Crowley remains optimistic about further opportunities for regional players to get involved.

“It’s been a tough selection process, but I am happy with the squad overall. There are a few boys from clubland who have missed out, but with the season how it is, with a midweek game and the usual battle of attrition, I’m sure there is an opportunity for a few more boys to be called up to play for the Lions at some time during the season,” said Crowley.

The Lions’ coaching team will remain the same. Tamati Ellison and Paul Tito return to Crowley’s side following the Super Rugby Season to link up with Greg Halford. Tito spent the 2022 season with the
