North Wellington’s Cory Vickers is a man willing to walk the walk for a cause he believes in.

Cory’s life in football and desire to see better mental health outcomes for those in sport will see him walk the length of New Zealand this summer to raise awareness of the issue.

Both he and his partner Brittany Adams will spend more than three months walking Te Araroa (New Zealand’s trail), a 3000km long tramping track stretching from Cape Reinga to Bluff.

Cory’s quest for more mental health support Continued from page 1.

“The goal is to fundraise a minimum of $8000 to support mental health in sport.

“We intend to publicise this project enough to hopefully be taken in for shelter when not on the track to connect with the communities as much as possible when we pass through.

“Safety equipment, appropriate clothing, food and an emergency tent will be all that we carry with us.

“We hope to pay homage to those suffering from mental health issues in sport.”

Cory says pushing himself outside his comfort zone for the cause was all part of it.

“It will test us both, doing it on a daily budget of $2 to $3 and relying on the community is all part of the fun and the challenge for both of us.

“I fell in love with New Zealand in 2017/2018 and left for family reasons, played football in Canada but I always wanted to come back to New Zealand.

“I came back to Nelson, fell in love with a girl and wanted to make New Zealand home.”

“There’s a lack of information within the sports clubs of what to do if you have depression or anxiety or if you see it in someone else.

“The plan is for the money raised to allow someone with the skills who can go into sports clubs and teach webinars and run courses on the importance of mental health.”

Newlands’ Pukehuia Park upgrade takes shape

The skatepark continues to take shape at Newlands’ Pukehuia Park.

A Ki-o-rahi court has also been established.

Work on the $3.6 million upgrade of Newlands Park, newly named Pukehuia Park, is nearing the final stages.

The upgrade, which is expected to be completed next month continues to take shape.

The new carpark works for the top field should be completed in the coming weeks.

The new artificial turf has now got special markings for Ki-o-Rahi and the pump track is finished.

The basketball court, skatepark and older kids play area are also well underway.

Mayor Andy Foster said at the start of the project the upgrade has been long-awaited by the Newlands community. “This is a great moment for Newlands – this is one of the biggest park

and playground projects by the Council in recent years. It recognises that the population of the Newlands area is growing – and that it’s a young population.

Councillor Jill Day, the Council’s Play spaces and programmes leader, says the work will “open up” Newlands Park and provide space for what’ll be a great new playground. “The local community’s been waiting a long time for this project to start – and I know there’ll be much excitement when the work is completed.

“The inclusion of the War Memorial in the park is also an inspired touch – the existing site at the Wakely Road intersection is cramped and, frankly, dangerous due to it being so close to a busy road. The new location will allow large crowds to gather safely for Anzac Day services.”

Five Newlands Volunteer firefighters are set to race up Auckland’s Sky Tower in full uniform to raise funds for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand.

Tim Cook, Jason Francis, Courtenay Jamieson, Tarhys Ibbertson and Pieter Lelieveld will wear more than 25kg of gear and equipment as they make the climb. on May 22.

Team captain Tim says he last did the event seven years ago but felt the time was right to give it a go again.

“It’s a great cause and you catch up with a lot of people so it’s a fun time.

“I’m hoping the climb goes well as I was a bit younger last time I did it.”

The Sky Tower is 328m high and has 51 flights of stairs with most people taking more than 1100 steps to complete the climb.

Finishing times range from eight minutes to 40 minutes, with Tim hopeful he can complete the task in under-20 minutes.

“Near the top of the climb the kit feels like more than 25kgs but it’s all part of the fun.

Each person will wear boots, pants, jacket, helmet, a breathing apparatus with a 25kg cylinder on their backs with a mask as well.

Recycling synergy for Karori Lions

The Karori Lions worked with Recycling for Charity to receive a mountain of unwanted electronic waste last Saturday at the Karori Community Centre.

All net proceeds and donations from Lions projects are returned to the community, while Recycling for Charity donates a portion of their profits to selected charities.

Over the past few years the Lions have established this as a popular biannual collection, with the public eager to get rid of obsolete, broken or unwanted computers, printers, cables, mobile phones while knowing that their data is secure and the material is recycled in the most sustainable manner possible.

Lions projects director Sharmini Sivanantham remarked that although volumes were not up from previous events, many customers were exceptionally generous.

One elderly gentleman, when asked for $45 for his substantial load of material, insisted on giving $100.

During the past year the Karori Lions’ major fundraising has been towards a therapeutic play area at the new Wellington Children’s Hospital, while Recycling for Charity also supports an equipment fund for the new hospital through collecting old mobile phones.

The Royal New Zealand Air Force Band will present their first public Wellington concert of 2021 at 2pm on Sunday, at Te Whaea National Dance and Drama Centre.

Dances and Arias will see the band performing music from France, Scotland, Russia and elsewhere, arranged for a full 60-piece symphonic band.

The concert will include instrumental arias featuring soloists from within the band: Corporal Reuben Chin on saxophone, and Corporal Byron Newton and Leading Aircraftman Luke Spence on euphonium.

The concert is designed for classical music enthusiasts and those curious about classical music, with a varied, lively and accessible programme ranging from the midnineteenth century until today.

Featured composers will include Jean Sibelius, Maurice Ravel, and Camille Saint-Saëns.

Ngaio author relishes next opportunity

Ngaio author Andy Southall is feeling a mix of excitement and relief at getting his first novel formally published later this month.

The former IT specialist had his first novel called Both Feet In Paradise formally published earlier this week with a launch scheduled for the end of May. “This is a big step and from the journey as a writer it’s a big thing for me and I’m excited about it.

The suspense novel is set in Samoa and takes inspiration from Andy’s time living in the country.

“I researched various places for the setting for the story in 2017 when (wife) Kate and I temporarily lived in Apia for three months.

Andy completed a a creative writing course at Whitireia Community Polytechnic in 2015 with Mandy Hager which set his journey alight.

“Another Ngaio resident in the same class, Anne Harre, who used to car share with me to classes, is also having her first novel, a crime thriller set in Wellington, published with Cuba Press in July.”

The Moa Point Animal Shelter upgrade is now complete.

Clean, comfy kennels are making life better for both pups and people following Moa Point animal shelter receiving a wellearned upgrade.

The snazzy black and yellow upgrades include new security systems, new cages, self-contained kennels, a plumbing refurbishment, and improved security cameras installed.

“These new cages are much easier to clean for the staff. They are also much warmer and more comfortable for the dogs.”

The sturdier material will mean less chance of break-ins, and there have been several of those over the past few years.

Built in 1968, the site has had upgrades

over the years with the last renewal in 2015.

Property Manager Marie Gudopp says the timely upgrade will benefit all the animals that come through the dog shelter.

“The staff do such great work to accommodate all sorts of animals that come through their doors, including a peacock which was found earlier this year. This new upgrade will not just help the animals but provide better facilities for the staff.”

All the impounded dogs are provided with donated blankets and toys during their stay, and some volunteers even bake them home-made dog biscuits.

Public engagement on Let’s Get Wellington Moving’s proposed changes to Thorndon Quay and Hutt Road are open now until June 8.

The proposed changes will improve walking and cycling, make bus journeys more reliable and enhance the experience for everyone that lives, works, visits or commutes through Thorndon Quay and Hutt Road.

Wellington City Council Mayor Andy Foster says, “these changes are an exciting step forward to realising the Let’s Get Wellington Moving vision for Wellington to be a great harbour city, accessible to all, with attractive spaces, shared streets, and efficient local and regional journeys.”

Thorndon Quay and Hutt Road is a busy gateway to the city for commuters and a vital retail and business hub for Wellington. The proposed changes will increase reliability and safety for all users and improvements to walking, cycling and public transport will reduce congestion for those who want or need to drive.

Many people live and work on Thorndon Quay and Hutt Road. It’s also an important commuter route; it’s the busiest bus route outside the city centre and the busy cycle route with more than 6,000 bus passengers and up to 1,300 cyclists on an average weekday. This is set grow with an additional 4,000 bus passengers and 2,700 cyclists by 2036.

Let’s Get Wellington Moving’s proposal for Thorndon Quay will provide part-time bus lanes in both directions and extend the two-way cycle path from Hutt Road to the bus interchange

at Mulgrave Street. Footpaths and the streetscape will be improved. Safety will be improved by converting angle parking to parallel parking, improving pedestrian crossings and providing a dedicated cycle path.

The proposal for Hutt Road includes providing part-time bus lanes in both directions and bus priority at the Ngauranga/Jarden Mile intersection.

To improve safety, we are proposing a raised median to limit right turns and a roundabout on Aotea Quay.

Let’s Get Wellington Moving will use feedback on the proposal to confirm the best option for construction. A preferred option will be shared with the public and if approved, further engagement on bus lane hours, speed and parking will happen in early 2022. In tandem, Wellington City Council will consider a formal resolution to convert Thorndon Quay’s angle parking to safer parallel parking. If approved, these changes will be made by the end of the year.

“The proposed changes respond to feedback we received in 2020 about the issues people experience on Thorndon Quay and Hutt Road. Changes to this route are key to achieving the Let’s Get Wellington Moving vision of moving more people with fewer vehicles,” Foster says.

People can have their say online at lgwm.nz/thorndonquayhuttroad. There will be open days on Friday May 21 from 3-7pm and on Saturday May 22 from 10am to 3pm.

People are invited to discuss the proposed changes with the project team and submit feedback.

The Waitohi Community Hub and Johnsonville Library won the Interior Architecture category at the 2021 New Zealand Institute of Architects Awards in the capital last week.

Waitohi Johnsonville Hub wins architecture award Two of Wellington City Council’s newest facilities won their categories in the 2021 New Zealand Institute of Architects Awards in the capital last week.

The Waitohi Community Hub and Johnsonville Library won the Interior Architecture category. Waitohi was designed by Athfield Architects which involved a high level of engagement with mana whenua, staff, and the wider community.

Waitohi connects the Common Ground Café, Johnsonville Library, Johnsonville Community Centre, Waitohi Kindergarten and Keith Spry Pool to create a vibrant community hub that continues to grow in popularity. Its design and commissioned artworks have brought to life the stories of Johnsonville’s natural environment, history and communities.

Te Awe Library (meaning white feathers

or plumes) in Brandon and Panama Streets took out the Public Architecture category. Te Awe is one of three pop-up library branches in Wellington’s CBD. They were set up so people could continue using library services, collections, and spaces in the city until the Central Library is remediated.

Herriot Melhuish O’Neill Architects led the design for Te Awe, which has a strong focus on young people and whanau, with a mix of vibrant spaces that create a warm, welcoming oasis in the city for people to enjoy.

This is also reflected by fantastic feature walls designed by students from Clyde Quay and Kelburn Normal Schools with the Council’s Creative and Brand team.

The children created patterns after interpreting words and ideas around birds and nature, which the Creative and Brand team then based the design on.

Toi Whakaari Challenge blasts off for creativity All systems are go as Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School proudly presents the Toi Whakaari Challenge – a national design and construction competition for secondary students of Film, Technology, Design, Fashion, Drama and Art. Open to all Aotearoa students Years 11 to 13, the Toi Whakaari Challenge invites contestants to imagine that they are working in the Art Department of a major new movie set on a futuristic Kiwi colony on Mars / Matawhero in the year 2222.

Using the Toi Whakaari Challenge brief, the competition requires the students to show their work according to the competition categories reflecting a particular area of practice within a profession film Art Department - Costume, Set & Props, Constructed Objects or Concept Drawing.

Submissions are open now for either a created design (images, workbooks) or proof of constructed objects (images, video). Their challenge is to design inspiring, other-worldly props, costumes, locations and hardware. The truly ambitious can even build their designs!

Otari-Wilton’s Bush a nature haven More than 250 pupils from Wellington schools recently gathered in the stunning space at ƿtari-Wilton’s Bush to connect with nature and deepen their scientific skills.

The ƿtari Enviroschools student event happens once a year and recently took place over two days, with four classes attending each day, and seven different schools participating.

This year, Enviroschools facilitators collaborated with the Open Science Lab, the team at ƿtari-Wilton’s Bush, and Children’s Garden educators to provide four different 40-minute activities for the students to rotate through.

Enviroschools is a nationwide programme for early childhood centres and schools.

Pupils explore the environment, then plan, design and take action in their local places in collaboration with their communities.

The focus is on creating a healthy, peaceful, sustainable world through learning and collaboration.

Wellington Botanic Garden ki PaekƗNƗ educator, Marion Saunders (and her predecessor Anneke Mace), have been working with Enviroschools and ƿtari-Wilton’s Bush teams over the past four years to run the events that help students learn about the environment.

Teachers have also been widely positive in their feedback, with comments such as: “It’s an amazing trip each year which inspires the tamariki to delve into nature and share learnings with our wider community, school and wKƗnau”.

Another teacher said the kids thoroughly enjoyed “being in the bush, walking up to the rimu and discussing the other trees on the way. They loved the work in the nursery too! Kids loved looking at things under the microscopes”.

Te WƗhi Ɩwhina is a joint social contract launched in April with Greater Wellington Regional Council, the City’s hospitality industry, retailers, and Police.

“The opening of Te WƗhi Ɩwhina is one of the Council’s pledges to the 3ǀneke Promise.

“It’s also an action following on from the release of a Police and Wellington City Council report last September on safety in and around Te Aro Park. Wellingtonians love their city, and everyone should feel accepted, understood, and safe.”

Located next to the Opera House across the road from Te Aro Park, Te WƗKL Ɩwhina provides an inner-city presence for key social agencies, meaning the City’s vulnerable communities will have easier access to these agencies.

THIS WEEK GARDENING Your health is determined by your food: By Wally Richards Readers who have followed my articles over the years would be very familiar with a theme which runs through them and that is: Your health is determined by your food chain, which is determined by the health of the soil that the plants grow in, plus the animals that you eat that feed on those plants.

Much of the food you buy has only little or no nutritional value to your body; it is just a filler for your stomach and even after you have eaten you still feel peckish.

This feeling of ‘peckish’ is your body saying ‘Hey, you have shoved a lot of stuff into me.

Now where are the vitamins, minerals, elements, antioxidants that I need?’

This I believe is one of the main reasons for being overweight. Your body craves high nutritional value food but instead you supply bulk.

But it is even worse. The bulk muck we ‘shovel in’ contains a lot of chemical poisons that the commercial food chain has used to make money and ultimately shortens your unhealthy life.

Realise that many of the same shareholders in fertiliser and chemical companies have also invested in the pharmaceutical companies and the medical industry.

Make them sick then sell them the products to ease (not cure) the sickness.

What amazes me is that the Government and our health department

don’t wake up to the fact that our overloaded hospitals and medical practitioners are a result of our poor (can I say unhealthy) food chain?

Every now and then something pops up and also says what I have been spouting for some time.

Here is an example of that: ‘For thousands of years, civilisations have been controlled through their food chain our world today is no exception’.

And with a global population of 7.8 billion, controlling the global food supply is big business.

What impact does the control and monopolisation of our food chain have on human health?

Bush suggests that sometime between the late 1980s and early 2000s, we did something to the environment that destroyed the ability of our immune systems to protect us. In the process, we sparked a rise in a number of

chronic diseases, including autism, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, celiac disease, thyroid disease and Crohn’s disease.

Bush believes that “something” was the invention of industrial-chemical agriculture and the introduction of toxic pesticides, such as Monsanto’s Roundup weedkiller.

Spraying food with chemicals prevents plants from forming the building blocks needed to properly nourish not only humans but all mammals, Bush said, and that ultimately destroys our ability to ward off illnesses.

Exposure to agrochemicals isn’t limited to the food we eat.

About 4.5 billion pounds of glyphosate, the key ingredient in Roundup weedkiller, are sold each year to treat soils.

Less than one-tenth of 1 percent of the Roundup actually hits a weed.

The other 99.9 percent goes into the soil and is eventually washed into our waterways, Bush says.

Two things I believe you need to do to be healthy and have a strong immune system are: Detox the poisons out of your system that are slowing you down, aging you faster and making you more susceptible to diseases.

Growing as much as you can of your food chain. Do this naturally without the use of chemicals.

Instead build up the health of the soil by increasing the microbial

activity with products such as MicoLife.

If on town supply put a 10 micron carbon bonded filter on your outside tap to remove the chlorine (which kills the soil life that you need).

Add to your soil mineral-rich products such as Wallys Unlocking your Soil and Wallys Ocean Solids.

Spray your food crops with Magic Botanic Liquid (MBL).

If you put the minerals in from the above products then your

food crops will be brimming with minerals and elements and have high nutritional values for your well-being.

Side effects from this outrageous suggestion are: This food you grow will taste much better.

There is a saying ‘A Little goes a Long Way’ so even if it’s just a few vegetables you can grow like lettuce, silverbeet and spinach that can make a difference.

Traffic bylaw up for debate Wellingtonians can now have their say about a proposed new Traffic and Parking Bylaw.

Wellington Mayor Andy Foster says the Council is proposing to revoke the current traffic bylaw which is no longer fit for purpose, and create a new ‘stand-alone’ Traffic and Parking Bylaw to protect, promote and maintain public safety on roads or parking areas owned or managed by the Council.”

“After extensive community consultation we adopted the new Parking Policy last August, which prioritises safe and efficient movement of people, active and public transport over private vehicles, and the use of public road space based on a new parking space hierarchy. Now the bylaw needs updating to reflect the policy.”

The proposed bylaw enables temporary road changes for pilot/trial schemes such as shared pathways.

Makes it simpler for parking officers to remove non-motorised vehicles that park on the street for longer than seven days, including trailers, boats and caravans.

Regulates the parking of vehicles for advertising or selling purposes.

Manages mobile trading in roads and public places.

Prohibits the driving, riding or parking of vehicles on beaches.

Restricts the driving, riding or parking of vehicles on unformed legal roads.

Amends the definition of taxi to include small passenger service vehicles for ser-

vices like Uber, Ola and Zoomy.

Clarifies that non-compliant skip/bulk bins can be restricted, charged and removed under the Local Government Act 2002.

Clarifies the conditions for using public works as a defence for parking offences.

The Council would like to hear the public’s thoughts on these proposed amendments.

They can also share their thoughts on whether motorcycles should be able to park in car-sized parking spaces and their personal experiences of engine braking noise or cruising activity disturbance. Their input will help the Council determine what steps could be taken to manage these issues in the future.

There is also an opportunity to have a say on alternatives to parking on footpaths, an increasingly prevalent problem that creates safety risks for footpath users.

The Council recently revoked a parking on footpath enforcement guideline from 2005 to better reflect current legislation and the new Parking Policy. Suggestions on how to best manage pedestrian and vehicle access and parking on narrow streets are now being sought, says Mayor Foster.

“We have increased traffic on our streets and footpaths but unfortunately we cannot match that increase with a works programme to widen all of our narrow streets.

It is our intention in calling for public suggestions to strike a balance that best meets the needs of residents, pedestrians, nonmotorised transport users and motorists.”

Reece Walsh is going places Reece Walsh may not have a passport yet but he is going to take the Warriors places.

Just three games into his NRL career, the 18-year-old has already announced himself as one of the most promising players to suit up for the club since a young Shaun Johnson.

The Queensland and Brisbane Broncos junior is on a seven-figure three-year deal at the Warriors and already seems to show the skillset

and nature that will endear himself to Warriors fans.

The talented teen already plays with flair beyond his years but also without fear of making mistakes and he will make plenty of them over the next few weeks and months.

However, the short-term pain will be well worth it in the long run.

Whether he plays at fullback or in the halves next year, he will be an asset and the type of player you can build a competitive team around.

Walsh still watches every NRL game each weekend and is close friends with fellow Queensland youngster Sam Walker. who has made an immediate impression with the Sydney Roosters.

You have to wonder what is happening at the Broncos at present after they let those two talented teens walk.

Walsh has all the skills to be a transformational player at the club.

North Ellington let opportunity slip away

In round 7 of the Men’s Central Football League, the North Wellington FC faithful will still be rubbing their eyes in disbelief as they come to terms with how a 3-1 lead turned into a 5-4 loss at the hands of Lower Hutt in an enthralling match at Alex Moore Park. As seems to be the hallmark in these games, both teams took a quarter of an hour to hit their straps before the expectant crowd got a taste of what was to come. Jesse Randall was back to his best in only his second game for Norths this season after a sojourn in the United States. Randall mesmerised the opposition on numerous occasions and created multiple chances with his wizardry moves in close confines.

It was the Randall pressure that put Norths on the board with a series of jinking runs down the right flank for a pin point cross to Ahmed Othman who produced a fine downward header at almost point blank range to beat the keeper. Thirty minutes was up before you knew it and Lower Hutt delivered a downward header goal of their own after Norths failed to tidy up their 18 yard box from a Lower Hutt corner. And that’s where things remained at the half time break.

Again, it took 15 minutes after the teams came back out of the sheds for another chapter to be created. It was the Randall and Othman show again but this time the roles were reversed. Othman screamed down the right hand flank, popped a ball across the face of the Lower Hutt goal which almost went too far across the back post.

Somehow Randall managed to negotiate an impossible angle and score to the great delight of at least half the spectators. Scott Henderson then made it 3-1 to Norths with a belter of a header from a corner that would make any highlights reel. Riley Bidois and George Ott then evened the ship for Lower Hutt producing goals in quick succession after slicing too easily through the Norths midfield and back line to lock the match up at 3 all.

Ihaia Delaney made it 4-3 to Norths in the 89th minute and the same 50% of the crowd were thinking happy thoughts and cold refreshments in their flash new clubrooms at the Waiora hub.

Two minutes into stoppage time though, Luis Toomey scored from a free kick after the ball deflected off the North’s wall and wrong footed Keegan Smith who well and truly had the direct shot covered. At 4 all, 100%

of the crowd were besides themselves with angst and no doubt were thinking about sharing a point each. In the end it was the Lower Hutt supporters and team who cheered longest and loudest after the visitors were awarded a penalty and George Ott scored to make it 5-4.

In other matches in the round, the Miramar juggernaut continues on with a 4-0 away win over Petone and Wairarapa United had a dominant 7-0 win over Wainuiomata. Wellington Olympic eased past Western Suburbs 3-2 and Waterside Karori would not be unhappy with a nil all draw on Sunday, playing away to Napier City Rovers.

Family affair for Johnsonville pairs final The Johnsonville Junior Men’s Pairs was decided over the weekend at the Indoor Stadium at Naenae.

Three teams fought their way through the round robin games to emerge into the post section and sudden death.

Earning their place in the semifinal were Paul Anquetil and Adam Ryan who faced off against another strong combination of Craig Walker and Craig Hepetema.

Play started at 10am on Sunday and after a long tussle over 18 ends, Paul and Adam just got home, winning 16-14.

The other finalists were Travis and Jason Anquetil who received the bye into the final as only three teams had won through to post section play.

This was always going to be an exciting game with the younger Anquetil brothers (Travis and Jason) facing off against their Uncle Paul Anquetil, family bragging rights were definitely at stake.

The standard of play was incredible throughout the entire game.

Almost every end was decided by one shot and the jack was moved regularly by all players.

The lead swapped around as each pairs team tried to assert their dominance on the game and win this prestigious title.
