Moana’s service

By Megan Connolly

Moana Kuma has been volunteering at Wainuiomata High School sports department for a decade. Recently she was awarded Volunteer of the Year at the College Sport Wellington 2019 Sportsperson of the Year Awards, travelling to Porirua with Jane Law and deputy principal Peter Cowan to receive it. Moana does everything and anything. If something needs to be done like managing, driving, washing, umpiring, she’ll do it. “The staff are really incredible and keep me coming back. But there are not enough volunteers,” she says. Continued on page 2. Moana Kuma, middle, received the Volunteer of the Year Award with supporters Jane Law and Peter Cowan in tow. the help of volunteers, especially schools. Moana primarily helps out with rugby but will put her hand up if there is no one else to help. “There is still a huge need for people to help out. I tried to give it up but our community needs volunteers. “Our kids really need support.” Volunteering isn’t just for local community groups, but schools,

from Primary to Secondary, need just as much support, Moana adds. “Everyone can help in some way. People just need to step through the door and we can help from there,” she says. “Any small thing you can do is appreciated. “Our older generation of volunteers are getting tired and it’s time for everyone else to come in and repay back what they

did for us and give back to our community.” Volunteering can take on many shapes and can involve a range of jobs. “You don’t have to be there physically. There’s always something you can do like organising, emailing or social media.” Moana’s award will be displayed proudly on her mantlepiece however she “is rewarded by the community every day.”

The paranormal takes over Parklands Hotel By Megan Connolly

Wainuiomata’s Parklands Hotel was home to some spooky supernatural behaviour recently when they featured in TVNZ’s Wellington Paranormal show. The hotel is the backdrop for the discovery of alien space cloning by the paranormal activity police division’s O’Leary and Minogue. They are drawn to the hotel after a dead policeman that looks exactly like Minogue is found.

Although the episode aired last week, the hotel’s location shots were filmed over two days in May. Many of the scenes took place around the outside and inside the office, in one of the units, and around the exterior of the hotel. Parklands’ Hotel owner and runner, Michael Boese says it was a fascinating look into the world of film making. “It was really interesting to watch the crew film and to see how many people are involved,”

he says. “What surprised me was the number of shots they use. Quite a bit of what they did wasn’t in the programme.” However, if you popped into the hotel now, it might look a little different than in the show. On-screen the hotel was made to look run down, old and covered in creepers, old clothes were added to the clotheslines and spooky faces dressed the set. Scenes in the spa, the long hallway and the alien con-

ference, were filmed at other locations, he says. Michael is a long-time local and has been operating the hotel since 2005 that was built in the 1970s. “A lot of people have said to me they didn’t even know there was a hotel here and many of them have lived here all their lives.” The Wellington Paranormal episode (Season 2, Episode 4) featuring Parklands Hotel can be watched on TVNZ On Demand.

Wellingtonian of the Year finalists for 2019 will be awarded this Thursday, November 14. Among them is Wainuiomata Primary School’s deputy principal and Special Educational Needs co-ordinator Tute Porter-Samuels. Tute has been advocating for better working conditions for teachers and principals throughout the strike and in the pay disparity battle. She is a finalist in the education category. The event is being held in Te Papa in the Wellington Foyer.

From Village to City Until the 1930s, the community of Lower Hutt was a village of a few thousand people. The village transformed into a city in as little as 15 years. The From Village to City event held at the Wainuiomata Community Hub on November 23 at 2pm, will screen the interviews that report the transformation. These interviews were recorded in 2007 by former TV producers, MP and Mayor, John Terris, as a way to document the monumental change.

Breaking chains with gratitude By Megan Connolly

They are mighty, they are positive, and they are growing with gratitude and the help of some human loving animals. Mighty Positive Growth is a group that has been meeting for the last year every Wednesday, from 10am to 3pm, at the Peace Within Learning grounds located on Upper Fitzherbert Road. The motivation behind the group is breaking chains through gratitude and providing a safe space for people and animals at all different life stages. Focusing on mental health, emotional and physical healing. Anneke Lilley, president of the group, says that at its heart, it is about working together, check-in with each other and having a community space where everyone feels safe. “Appropriate for everyone with different points of view and getting stronger together,” she says. Each day unfolds with an easy structure, with each member of the group having their own leadership roles whether that be timekeeping being a garden guru or kai-time organisers. Atrial fibrillation is an irregular heart rhythm, which results in poor blood flow and an increased risk of heart failure and stroke for some. It can strike adults at any age and it’s estimated nearly one in 35 New Zealanders between the age of 35 and 74 have been di-

Fitness fundraiser a smash hit By Megan Connolly

Everything was awesome on Saturday afternoon at the War Memorial Community Hall for a fundraiser event to support a young local boy, Nehemiah, who is currently undergoing treatment for cancer. The event gathered local fitness instructors from Upper Hutt Fitness, Whanau Ora Free Fitness and FIT5014, to run a 90-minute dance fitness masterclass where all money raised will be going straight to the family. Over the course of the day $665 was raised from the door sales, koha and raffles. One of the organisers, Cora Lambert from Fitness with Cora was thankful

for the huge community response. “A huge thanks to everyone who came to support on the day, as well as our volunteer firefighters who came down for a couple of hours,” she says. “So blessed to live in such a giving community. Best town in Aotearoa in my opinion! “But most of all I want to send all our love and thoughts to Nehemiah and his family at this time. “We are thinking of them, and wish them a speedy recovery once this treatment is over. Much love to our man of the hour, Nehemiah!” Cora says. Fourteen local businesses donated prizes and gifts, while others showed up on the day to support the cause.

Jackie McDonald, Whiro Ratahi and Nicole Rameka-Morunga enjoy the calm before the exercise.

Everything was awesome for Stacey Olsen, Rongo Toelupe and Arieta (Cindy) Aldridge on Saturday afternoon.

Jahnero Lambert and dad Kim popped in to the fundraiser to see what was going on.

Jodie-Ann Webster and Ana So’otaga from the Te Akakairangi Health’s promotion team were out supporting the event.

Tamper proof your license plates next Saturday Next Saturday, November 23 will be safer plates day at Countdown. There are a number of license plates stolen every week around Hutt City and in Wainuiomata. The stolen plates are being used in drive-offs, burglaries and many other offences. It has been reported that the use of stolen number plates for criminal activity has substantially increased. Safer Plates Day, organised by The Community Patrol and Police, hope to prevent

plates from being stolen by providing safer screws that secure plates in place. Wainuiomata’s divisions have partnered with Countdown to provide this service for a koha. All local residents need to do is pop down to the Countdown Carpark between 9.30am and 3pm on Saturday to have them swapped to the tamper-proof screws. Safer Plates is a country-wide programme to provide secure stainless steel screws to the public. Community Police Officer Tony Shearer and Brian Mansfield replace the license plate screws with tamper proof ones. PHOTO: Supplied

Homedale home to market stalls recently By Megan Connolly

The Homedale Village Markets were on last week, thankfully, with sunshine and heat. This market is an opportunity for locals and community groups to sell their own wares and spread the

messages out. Several stalls were set up along Moores Valley Road with plants galore, knick-knacks, and some yummy fudge. Organised by Celia Reynolds, there will likely be another Homedale Village market in the coming months, date to be announced.

Cellphone tower to be installed A cell phone tower will be installed in Catchpool Valley, which will eliminate a mobile blackspot for more than 100,000 annual visitors to the Remutaka Forest Park, National’s Hutt South MP Chris Bishop launched a campaign in March 2017 to get mobile coverage

in the Catchpool and Orongorongo valleys through the Government’s Mobile Black Spot Fund. “The Remutaka Forest Park has more than 100,000 visitors per year and is growing in popularity, but currently has little-to-no cell coverage. The Catchpool Valley was

short-listed for funding in 2017. There will be more details in the following weeks as to when the tower will be installed and its location. “It is a massive step forward and a big win for Wainuiomata, rural residents, and visitors to the park,” Chris says.

Wearable Arts outfits wow crowd Take the phrase ‘ladies, bring a plate’, combine it with some imaginative thinking and craft skills, and you’ve got a winning combination. This was the creation modelled by Woburn Home resident June Farrar as part of the Enliven home’s third annual Wearable Arts show recently. The outfit included a frame with two arms coming out of it, carrying sandwiches and cakes made out of crafting materials. More cakes and treats adorned June’s dress, made to resemble a table cloth. More than a dozen outfits hit the runway at the Lower Hutt home as part of the event, attended by residents, family members and Enliven staff. This year the theme was ‘life’s memorable moments’, and the creations ranged from remembering school days, old dances, shared meals, leaving home and wedding days. All of the attendees were encouraged to vote for their favourite outfit and June’s was a winner. There were also entries from some of Enliven’s other Wellington and Horowhenua homes, such as Cashmere Home in Johnsonville, Huntleigh Home in Karori and Levin’s Reevedon Home. Woburn Home manager Sue Wood says the outfits were made by recreation staff with help and input from the residents. “All of the outfit ideas came from our lovely residents, who then helped us draw up the ideas and come up with a plan for each outfit.” Enliven’s Woburn Home and Apartments, located on Wai-iti Crescent, Lower Hutt, offers independent retirement

SPORTS TALK with Jacob Page

Time for ABs to get Razor’s edge A week or two removed from the Rugby World Cup, it is evident change is in the air. The All Blacks need a fresh lick of paint and Scott Robertson is the man who is much needed to kick-start the stalling team. Ian Foster, an assistant under Steve Hansen for the past four years, is, at least in the public’s eye, too closely associated with

the old regime. Yes, in previous years that was a successful one but it is also an era which felt like it came to an end with that semifinal loss to England. To pick Foster, who had no silverware success of note as Chiefs head coach, may look like the NZRU is flogging a dead horse. Robertson has won three Super

Rugby titles with the Crusaders, yes the PC brigade still let us call them that for now, a franchise with excellent players but one which had grown a reputation for not winning the big games until his arrival. Is he unproven? Certainly at international level and the last time the All Blacks tried that with John Mitchell more than 15 years ago it

failed in spectacular fashion. While the public may see Robertson’s selection as a no-brainer, it would in many respects be a bold one from the rugby brains of this country. Robertson, an above average provincial player who had limited chances in the black jersey, seems to have a way of getting the most out of the young players.

He’s got the best out of Sevu Reece, Jack Goodhue and Bryn Hall while rejuvenating guys like Sam Whitelock and Joe Moody. It is time for the rugby brass to be bold, accept a new era is upon us and go in a slightly new direction. Robertson represents that. Fresh thinking with a nod to the past and a respect for what the jersey means to this country.

ANZ offering top-end kit to Wainuiomata cricketers ANZ is offering to kit out Wainuiomata cricket players with gear and the chance to take part in a BLACKCAPS game this season. ANZ is continuing to support community cricket in Wainuiomata and across New Zealand as the 2019/2020 cricket season gets underway. This year, ANZ is offering individual cricket players, teams and schools the chance to win top-quality gear to help them take their game to the next level. ANZ Head of Sponsorship Sue McGregor says ANZ’s 10year commitment to supporting grassroots cricket comes from understanding the value of team sport in helping develop the next generation of New Zealanders. “We have been told one of the most important things we can offer young players is access to top quality cricket gear, so we’re continuing to offer that this year,” Sue says.

“We’ve seen the impact of Saturday morning team sport and the positive life lessons it provides. We’re continuing to support Kiwi cricketers and providing quality gear to young players as we believe it’s a step towards helping them achieve their sporting dreams.” All cricket players, clubs, and teams across New Zealand can apply for an ANZ cricket grant at ANZcricketworld.co.nz. Young cricket fans are also invited to apply to be the ANZ Coin Toss Kid for all BLACKCAPS and WHITE FERNS matches played in New Zealand this season. The winners will join the captains of both competing teams on the pitch before the match and help decide who bats and bowls. Apply for an ANZ cricket gear grant or to go in the draw to become a Coin Toss Kid at ANZcricketworld.co.nz. Applicants must be between 7 and 13 to be eligible.

Heartland Ride could be possible for local area A number of local businesses and residents have been working with Hutt City Council and Love Wainuiomata to see if a Heartland Ride is possible for Wainuiomata. “The Remutaka Cycle Trail already finishes on our wild Coast,” says Esther King from Love Wainuiomata. “Becoming a Heartland Ride would encourage riders to journey through Wainuiomata to enjoy our businesses and attractions from wild kiwi to great golf, amazing camping to quad biking, Homedale’s boutique cafe and shopping to Queen St’s tasty takeaways. “If our wider community is behind a Heartland Ride we can make the most of this opportunity for riders, community and businesses” Local resident Christine Green is excited about the possibilities. “We just received the good news that very little work appears to be

required for a Heartland Ride to be approved. The most important thing now is to share this opportunity with our community and see what locals think,” she says. When the full Remutaka Cycle Trail vision comes to fruition via Eastbourne to Petone, a Wainuiomata Heartland Ride will still offer an attractive inland route, plus a great day loop around the Eastern Bays and Wainuiomata. “To make a successful application to NZTA we need our community’s support,” Esther says. “Please take a couple of minutes to let us know what you think because it’s your support that will get this over the line.” Locals can email support or feedback to team@lovewainuiomata. com or via Love Wainuiomata’s Facebook page. Residents can also attend a public meeting ‘A Heartland Ride for Wainuiomata’ on Tuesday, November 19 at 6.00pm at the Community Hub Library.

A Heartland Ride could be on the cards for locals which will attract travellers from all over the world. Mark Shanks from Healthy Families, Community board member Dawn McKinley, locals Christine Green and Barrie Green, Esther King from Love Wainuiomata are all excited about the prospect.
