Course facilitator Lucky Sullivan and Vince Taripo say as part of the course they will also focus on health and well being and transport and kai will be provided.

“We are based at the Valley Church on Fitzherbert Road until there is more space at Wainuiomata Marae,” Vince says.

“We will be doing role play for interviews and a sort of table speed dating thing for jobs,” Vince says.

“I have worked for a previous provider and I specialised in personal development doing CV’s and interview skills and these boys will get that training as well and industry focused interview skills as well.”

For the second time Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington is opening the Nga Hoe a Kupe Pathfinder Scholarships.

Applications for the scholarship close next Wednesday October 20.

The scholarships are open to students from eight schools (four in the Hutt, four in Porirua), including Wainuiomata High School. The University offers guaranteed financial support, academic mentoring and other support throughout the recipients’ undergraduate degree programme, including accommodation in the first year of study.

There are up to ten recipients, and it is unique for the key criteria not

being all about academic success, instead on demonstration of resilience, innovation and overcoming adversity.

Former Wainuiomata High School student Nicole Odeyemi, who gained a Nga Hoe a Kupe Pathfinder Scholarship last year and has been studying a Bachelor of Health so she can achieve her long term goal of making a difference to the lives of foster kids.

Nicole says, “growing up around a lot of foster kids has exposed me to the reality of the foster system and the mental and physical effects it can have on these kids – I want to be able to make a difference.”

and says a few of her teachers had been encouraging her year group to apply and get our personal statements done as the potential of receiving $50,000 was too good to turn down.

“I remember one of my teachers saying “Applying for scholarships may be hard and timeconsuming at the moment, but imagine if you do get the $50,000, that’s your whole uni paid for and all you had to do was fill out a few forms and write a personal statement.” And she was right, For Nicole growing up in a foster home she says she has had so many siblings she has lost count.

“My mum used to be a foster mum, so I had new siblings

coming in and out of the home throughout my childhood, all coming from multiple different backgrounds of ethnicity, upbringing, home issues,” she says.

Receiving the scholarship has been meaningful to her because, she says, growing up in Wainuiomata, especially in her household she felt pretty trapped.

“Our family adventures were limited as we’ve never owned a car.

I’ve never even left the country, I had lived in the same house for 18 years. Knowing that the scholarship came with a full year of accommodation, I knew that if I was awarded the scholarship that was my ticket out of Wainuiomata,” she says.

inbrief news Swimmers urged to be kind Recreation Aotearoa and recreation facility operators around the country are urging people to heed the Government’s ‘be kind’ messaging during Alert Level restrictions.

Recreation Aotearoa are aware of reports of personnel facing abuse from customers in recreation facilities, particularly at swimming pools.

With current Alert Level restrictions, facilities have implemented contact tracing, physical distancing, and, where required, number restrictions.

These rules mean that facilities are not operating at normal capacity and some activities cannot take place.

Alarmist at the HUB By: Gerald Rillstone This weekends Heritage Talk at the Wainuiomata HUB is from Dave Lowe who has been charting the rise of atmospheric carbon dioxide for more than 50 years.

In the early 1970s, he was posted at an atmospheric monitoring station at Baring Head.

On a shoestring salary he measured carbon in the atmosphere, collecting vital data towards what became one of the most important discoveries in modern science.

Dave first sounded the alarm about the unfolding climate crisis more than forty years ago, when he began charting the relentlessly rising curve of atmospheric carbon dioxide above the southern hemisphere. He was witnessing a distressing change, both as he gathered data and spent time surfing the ocean waves he loved and acted as we should expect all scientists to act when they uncover a clear signal of approaching danger.

What followed was a lifetime’s career

marked by hope and despair. As realisation dawned of what his measurements meant for the future of the planet, Dave travelled the world to understand more about atmospheric gases, along the way programming some of the earliest computers, designing cutting-edge equipment and conducting experiments both dangerous and mind-numbingly dull.

Not a lot of people realise what an important part the Baring Head monitoring station on the fringe of Wainuiomata plays. It is a CO2 continuous monitoring station, set up

by DSIR’s Institute of Nuclear Sciences in the early 1970s, was the first south of the Equator, and tied in with American research to investigate the increase in the global rise of greenhouse gases.

To this day the programme continues today, under NIWA, and provides the longest-running monitoring record in the Southern Hemisphere. It tied in both with earlier DSIR research on radiocarbon measurements, and related developments.

Dave was the junior scientist who set up Baring Head, and became internationally recognised leading research into atmospheric CO2, CH4 and other greenhouse gases.

He was a lead author of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize-winning IPCC Assessment Report on climate change, and has worked around the world. In May 2021, he recounted his career in his book The Alarmist.

Whiskers saving cats

By Gerald Rillstone A dedicated deep affinity with animals has all been part of the reason Wainuiomata’s Sonya Chambers has set up Animal Rescue – Wainui Whiskers and is financing it with her own funds and donations.

Sonya has been around animals all her life and loves them all. The rescue started because Sonya saw people in the Wainuiomata community needing help with stray/lost cats on Facebook and she knew she could help.

Then people started referring her and she thought, “ that’s ok I will rescue them, have them vet checked then hand them over to the many other rescues for adoption. But the rescues were all full.”

She soon had rescued five cats and decided to start a mini rescue service and go from there.

“It just went ka-pow.”

And that was in December last year. Now 9 months later, she has rescued over 70 cats, kittens and feral toms.

“I currently have 41 under rescue and 3 wonderful fosters,” Sonya Says.

“Saving cats has turned out to be a big commitment along with working full time but I love it.”

She does it also to help the community with the feral cat problem and will save as many as she can for as long as she can and pays for everything herself.

She has set up a Givealittle page and is thankful for the donations from a range of people and organisations to help.

Her running costs are substantial with the general cost per animal $130 - $170 for desexing, $30 - $70 for microchip, $100-$200 for 3 vaccinations over 3 visits, worming

(This excludes the time it takes to set up & catch the kitties, petrol, cleaning etc).

Any and all donations are put towards these fur-babies with love and gratitude. The long term goal is to find a property to have a purpose built facility for the rescue and a boarding area to help fund the rescue. Adoption days are held on weekends with details posted on Wainui Whiskers Facebook page.

Diwali Festival going online The Diwali Festival of Lights is going online this year due to current COVID-19 restrictions.

In line with other major events around the country, the difficult decision to cancel the live event and go online was made so it could still be celebrated in a safe and responsible way.

In its 20th year, Wellington’s annual local Indian and South East Asian communities’

most vibrant cultural celebration will be sharing performances and messages online.

A wonderful collection By: Gerald Rillstone It’s a good old fashioned setup at Wonderland Records and a destination shop for all those interested in music the old school way on vinyl or tape, 78’s, CDs, DVD, music videos, pop posters, pop Tee’s, books, badges, post cards and other harder-to-find releases.

Owner of the business Kevin Shaw has had the shop in Wainuiomata for ten years but his association with the business goes back even further.

He originally ran the business on High Street in Lower Hutt where he says it was a lot busier but the rent was too steep so he moved to one of the oldest established shopping centres, Homedale, in Wainuiomata, “That was when I dealt in a lot of the latest stuff so when all the new albums came out like Michael Jackson’s latest release people had to come and buy it from me but if I didn’t sell the stock I was sent I would still have to pay for it and the rent there was a thousand dollars a week,” Kevin says.

It isn’t a great location in Wainuiomata he says and a lot of business is done online but the shop is open by appointment for anyone who wants to come and have a look, he says.

Kevin has been in the business for about 30 years and has the

selection stock to show for it.

When he started off it was just second hand records in a little record shop that his dad owned.

“Nobody wanted to rent it off him because it was so small. It is now a little coffee shop on Victoria Street, Alice town, but some really good friendships were made there and I slowly got bigger.”

Sharing the love of music is part of the passion behind the business but there is also the love of the art work that goes into album covers, tee shirts and posters that Kevin still enjoys.

“I used to go into record shops in the old days and not even buy anything and just look at the covers. I admired guys who did their own covers.”

Kevin admits to loving a wide range of music even, he says, classical.

“My favourite artist is Jethro Tull and they are classically trained and we are brain washed into thinking classical music is not good for you but it is often the root of all good music,” Kevin says.

Lower Hutt still cheaper to buy than rent

By Kelvin Davidson There are still several areas of NZ where a typical first home buyer is likely to find paying a mortgage cheaper than renting. But there are certainly fewer areas than a year ago, with Porirua, Lower Hutt, Tauranga, and Tasman some examples of areas where paying a mortgage has switched from being lower than rent a year ago to more expensive now. As the official cash rate increases and mortgage rates continue to rise, the relative appeal of buying a property may start to

dwindle a bit for some would-be first home buyers.

One feature of the property upswing over the past year or so has been its widespread nature, with all parts of NZ seeing rapidly rising values, not just the largest cities or other main urban areas. In fact, some provincial markets have seen the largest gains, and one interesting way to look at this is the comparison of buying versus renting for a typical first home buyer.

However, a year ago it was only a small handful of the most expensive parts of NZ where a first home buyer

would pay more on the mortgage than rent.

In Porirua, for example, whereas a year ago there might have been savings of about $220 per fortnight on offer to a typical first home buyer if they owned rather than rented, that figure has now tipped the other way and buying is about $90 more per fortnight.

Higher mortgage rates will push up ownership costs directly and, while they may also slow the rate of property price growth, values are still likely to be higher in another year’s time than they are today.

Help with cranes needed

By Gerald Rillstone Wainuiomata HUB has put out the call for help in creating 1,000 origami cranes by the end of October.

Part of a Hutt City Libraries project the one thousand origami cranes, senbazuru, means literally 1,000 cranes held together by strings.

An ancient Japanese legend promises that anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes will be granted a wish by the gods. Some stories believe one is granted happiness and eternal good luck, instead of just one wish,

such as long life or recovery from illness or injury. This has made them popular gifts for special friends and family.

The crane in Japan is considered to be a mystical or holy creature.

A thousand paper cranes are often given to a person who is seriously ill, to wish for their recovery. They are usually created by friends, classmates, or colleagues as a collective effort. Another common use is for sport teams or athletes, wishing them victories. Cranes are a symbol of peace, and are thus often seen at war memorials.

Going to seed : By Wally Richards Plants have one objective in life and that is to reproduce.

Reproduction is mostly done by seeding but can be also achieved through division, suckering, cloning, producing bulblets or pups.

The desire to reproduce is their strongest attribute which can make JDUGHQLQJ YHU\ GL൶ FXOW DW WLPHV There are two basic forms of plants.

One is called annuals because they JHUPLQDWH JURZ À RZHU VHHG DQG then die.

The other type are perennials which live for a number of seasons or in the case of some trees thousands of years.

There are some in between such as bi-annuals which for our purpose here we will not worry about.

Perennials are fairly straight forZDUG WKH\ OLYH WKH\ À RZHU WKH\ produce seeds, they may produce R൵ VHWV VXFNHUV QHZ SODQWV IURP their root system). All while they live for more than one season.

They can have their foliage removed and survive to generate more foliage, unlike an annual plant which if their foliage is removed the root system dies.

It is the annuals that we are going to talk about because as far as I am aware they only reproduce naturally by seeding.

They can in some cases be grown from cuttings. Nature if a bit of their foliage falls onto a suitable bit of dirt they could produce roots and become a clone of their parent plant.

Seeds will not germinate in nature till the conditions are right which means temperatures in both soil and air along with adequate moisture.

If the temperatures are right in summer but it’s too dry to germinate nothing happens till the soil moisWHQV XS VX൶ FLHQWO\ A day of rain changes the moisture level and the seeds lying dormant germinate, which includes weeds).

Two possible events may occur then; one is that further rain or your watering follows and the plants/ weeds grow up tall and strong and when maturity is reached they SURGXFH À RZHUV DQG VHHGV The other possibility is there is no more rain and the soil dries, the plant/weed has only grown a few inches and it will realise that it is becoming too dry and immediately PDWXUH À RZHU DQG VHW VHHG EHIRUH

This is where you will see lots of EDE\ ZHHGV LQ GU\ DUHDV À RZHULQJ their hearts out to seed before they wither in the dry conditions.

Their seed falls on to the dry dusty soil to wait for the next moist time to germinate and start the cycle all over again.

From this we learn that annual plants, or ones we call weeds, when they encounter stress or checks in their growing they will feel that their lives are threatened and go to seed.

We call this ‘bolting’ and you will see the term bolt resistant, which means the particular species will tolerate a bit of stress before going to seed.

When it comes to non fruiting vegetable plants we want them to reach maturity without going to seed prematurely. So our cabbages, lettuce, silverbeet, celery etc will produce good plants to harvest and eat. If left after maturity they will eventually go to seed.

What we don’t want is the same plants to go to seed before they reach maturity.

Some vegetables are very prone to bolting unless the growing conditions are perfect from the time they germinate to the point of maturity.

If we are growing our own seedlings for planting out and we nurture the plants from germination to planting out by giving them DGHTXDWH GLUHFW VXQ OLJKW VX൶ FLHQW moisture for sustained growth and we prick them out without damagLQJ WKH URRWV DIWHU µKDUGHQLQJ R൵ ¶

and provide the young plants with good growing conditions we have great success.

If we fall down and the plants get into stress then later on they will likely go to seed.

We call this a ‘check’ in their growth. It could have been caused by becoming too dry, too hot, too FROG WRR VRIW DQG LQVX൶ FLHQW GLUHFW sun light.

To overcome this, spray them with Vaporgard to protect the soft foliage and they can then be hardened up quickly.

A day before planting out spray the seedlings with Vaporgard over and under foliage. This acts as a stress guard and reduces transplant shock, protects the plants from the elements and reduces moisture loss through foliage.

Instead of lying down, your plants will sit up and start growing much quicker in their new situation.

If you place Crop Cover over them with hoops you will protect the plants from birds, cats, insects and the elements.

They will grow just about twice as fast which means you will be enjoying your own home grown vegetables much sooner.

This allows you to re-plant and have more harvests during the growing season.

Council climate change vote Hutt City Council has voted in favour of signing up to the Race to Zero climate initiative, joining more than 730 cities around the world that have publicly committed to reducing carbon emissions.

Race to Zero, a global campaign run by the COP26 Presidency (26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties) is the largest global alliance of organisations working together to build global momentum towards the shift to a decarbonised economy.

“The decisions we made today at committee ensures the continued work with the community on a city-wide roadmap with clear carbon reduction targets. It’s going to require collective action - we need everyone in our communities to reduce their carbon emissions.’’

“To ensure transparency, Council will report annually to the committee on the progress we’re making to lower emissions, and also work with our partners, businesses, and residents to help us deliver the outcomes needed to combat climate change.”

COP 26 organisers hope the growing success of Race to Zero will send a strong signal to governments around the world that cities, regions, businesses, and investors are united in creating a more inclusive and resilient economy, and meeting the goals set out in the Paris Agreement, an international treaty on climate change.

The next meeting of COP26 will be held in Scotland in November, and participating governments will be asked to accelerate their contributions to the Paris Agreement.

What’s Cooking... in Honey & mustard chicken thighs with spring veg Ingredients:

s 1 tbsp honey s 1 tbsp wholegrain mustard s 2 garlic cloves, crushed s zest and juice 1 lemon s 4 chicken thighs, skin on s 300g potatoes, unpeeled, smaller left whole, bigger halved s 1 tbsp olive oil s 100g spinach s 100g frozen peas

1. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. In a small bowl, mix together the honey, mustard, garlic and the lemon zest and juice. Pour the marinade over the chicken thighs and season.

2. Put the chicken, skin-side up, on a large baking tray, then dot the new potatoes in between them. Drizzle the oil over the potatoes and sprinkle with sea salt.

Roast in the oven for 35 mins until the chicken skin caramelises and is charred in places.

1. Add the spinach and peas to the roasting tray. Return to the oven for 2-3 mins until the spinach has begun to wilt and the peas are hot and covered in the mustardy sauce.

Sporobolus, sometimes called ‘Spartina’ has found its way into our region, but there is still a chance to get rid of it according to the Wellington Regional Council.

Spartina is a pest plant that grows quickly in inter-tidal zones.

It can displace native plants in waterways and cause sediment build up, increasing the risk of flooding.

It is a problem because it restricts water movement and causes sediment build-up in waterways, increasing the risk of flooding.

Women’s rugby hurt by Black Fern-less final The New Zealand Rugby Union did the womens game no favours by not allowing the Black Ferns to play in the showpiece of the sport in the country.

Canterbury had six players missing for the decider while eventual winners, Waikato were without nine Black Ferns.

The Black Ferns head for a tour of Europe next week and therefore were held out of the game.

New Zealand’s best female player, Kendra Cocksedge was reduced to running the kicking tee on and off for the game at Christchurch’s Rugby Park.

Essentially you had Canterbury B versus Waikato B and it showed on the field.

Yes, the final had excellent defence and the 22-20 finish suggested a close game but the skill level was not up to the surging

standards of the women’s game in this country.

If efforts are still being made to convert people into watching the game, and I’m sure it is, few new eyeballs would have been thrilled with what they watched.

That does not mean there was not a star or two that impressed.

Canterbury flanker Jorja Miller was phenomenal.

Long touted as a gifted player

on the rise when I used to work at the Timaru Herald as a sports reporter, South Canterbury’s Jorja was the best on ground by a country mile.

Yes, you can blame Covid-19 for disrupting the domestic rugby schedule but the Farah Palmer Cup final deserved more respect than what it got on Saturday.

If the NZRU wants the rugby public to take the women’s game

with the same seriousness as the men’s game in the coming years then outcomes like this need to be avoided in the future.

I’m sure the 15 Black Ferns would have rather played than sat on the sidelines.

Finals must be against the best players, that’s the whole point, New Zealand Rugby dropped the ball and the game suffered as a result.

Rugby girls dedicated to the game

Nga Hau E Wha O Wainuiomata Rugby League girls have showed true dedication to the game during the school holidays.

The team was split up and put in several different Wellington wide teams to play in a league organised

by Wellington Rugby over the school holidays.

It included under18 girls rugby

players from Wellington and the Hutt Valley and as far away as Horowhenua.

Nga Hau E Wha O Wainuiomata Rugby League co-manager Jermaine Pasene says they were mixed into three teams Centurions, Samoans and Maori.

“It was a four team competition run over the two weeks and games were played both Wednesday and

Saturday,” Jermaine says.

“They played Wednesday night then Saturday which was a real test for all, being out of their comfort zone and playing with other girls they just met.”

To watch it all come together like it did it showed with a bit of effort and focus you girls can do anything he says.

According to Wellington Rugby junior Girls Rugby is alive and

strong amongst the 18 Junior Clubs in Wellington.

There are several ways for girls in the Wellington region to experience and play rugby. Some clubs offer a nursery grade for our U5 players which is the beginning of their rugby playing journey. They then move on to U6 and U7 grades which introduce rugby through its non-contact form of rippa rugby.

This teaches the key skills of run-

ning rugby without the tackle.

From there a number of rugby skills development modules are run throughout the year. These are ‘girls only’ events which enable the girls to learn fundamental rugby skills, tackle technique and build confidence in a fun and safe environment; it also provides opportunity for friendships to form, something that can be a challenge for those in teams filled with boys.

Game on for Super Saturday

It is game on for sports teams in Wainuiomata this Saturday with a number of clubs who have teamed up with local community groups from Pataka Kai, Wainuiomata Rugby Football Club and Wainuiomata Rugby League Club to get as many of our whanau

vaccinated this week as possible.

Each group will be getting their people to Wainuiomata Marae to get their vaccination and when they do, they can place their vote in the observation area for their team.

Each group has already received a koha in recognition of their service to the community but the end of the day Saturday, the team

with the most balls in their jar, will win an additional $750.

You can help them by going as soon as possible.
