“Is staging the right approach or would the community like to see us do the whole thing from the 1st of July or put in 4.4 now and then some more money later on, ” Campbell says.

A main part of the upgrade involves the Civic area.

With the new Countdown precinct nearly completed upgrading Queen Street really needs to be done Keri says, “otherwise it is going to look like new Wainui and old Wainui.”

Part of the upgrade will see a kiosk built with the existing mounds flattened out creating a civic centre that would flow to the other side of the street.

“This would create more of a flow for pedestrians in particular, the loop in front of the Hub would go and the other main feature would be a large deck running around the existing buildings, making a stage and an area for performance more useful for the

community” Campbell says.

Also up for consultation is the option for a half basketball court.

“We are keen to get feedback on that, we obviously already have one down by the league club but it could be more central.”

With the possibility of apartments being built above the shops on Queen Street the upgrade would create a desirable vibrant area for the community to spend time in.

“In order for us to advocate to do the whole thing sooner rather than later we really need the communities support behind it and it makes sense to do it all in one go and the new lane will

be finished in September and it makes sense to do it to line up with the rest of the work,” Keri says.

“It will be so much more inviting for people who have been looking for something, like the 100 thousand people who come through Wainuiomata each year, they never come to Queen Street because there is nothing here for them.”

inbrief news Major resurfacing works on SH58 Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is advising of upcoming major resurfacing works on State Highway 58, as part of a package of improvements to make the road safer.

The safety improvements are part of the New Zealand Upgrade Programme, which is investing $6.8 billion in road, public transport, walking and cycling infrastructure to get our cities moving, save lives and boost productivity in growth areas.

From Friday 16 April, resurfacing works will begin along a narrow section of State Highway 58 near Harris Road.

The work is expected to take seven weeks to complete, with stop/go traffic management in place during the day, outside of peak travel times, and at weekends through the day and night.

New electric ferry new travel opportunities By: Gerald Rillstone Soon to be on the water the new electric East By West ferry is chock full of the latest developments, some of them new to the industry, and it could provide another option for commuters to travel to the airport.

Cages which house the batteries are one of the things that has piqued the interest of other boat builders. They have been designed and constructed to give protection in case of a fire.

They are built of carbon fibre and extra light replacing the need for steel cages.

East By West Managing director Jeremy Ward says the batteries are capable of giving around ten years of use before they need to be replaced.

He says if they work them really hard they will get five to six years maximum out of the batteries and then they will be removed and put on a trickle charge and that power can dropped into the new batteries on the boat to get another five years out of them.

There will be at least two weeks of testing once the boat goes in the water and it is desgined to take bikes and the seat configeration can be changed around

to allow for functions to be held aboard.

The boat will have plenty of power too with 500 horse power being put out by each of the two motors and it can accommodate 135 passengers and has a top speed of 20 knots.

They are in discussions with the transport minister Michael Wood in relation to using the wharf at Miramar to enable an airport run from Eastbourne a possibility.

Hutt South Labout MP Ginny Andersen is all for the idea which will give a clean green alternative to travel.

“There is no airport flyer in the Hutt now and without a car to get to the airport it is a pretty long way so if you can get to Eastbourne from Wainui, which is pretty quick, you could be straight onto the boat and catch a short shuttle to the airport and added to this you can use the cycleway to get to the ferry and catch a ride with your bike,” Ginny says.

A launch date hasn’t been set but is not too far off and the name chosen for the boat is under wraps for now and will be made public in a couple of weeks.

Change of fire season for Wellington Wellington has moved from a restricted fire season to an open fire season .

An open fire season means you don’t need a permit to light an outdoor fire.

The change of season for Wellington covers the council boundaries for the Kapiti Coast, Porirua, Wellington, Hutt City and Upper Hutt.

Principal Rural Fire Officer for Wellington Craig Cottrill says cooler weather in and around the capital means the fire risks have decreased.

“The recent rain, paired with the drop in temperature has meant the risk of unwanted fires getting out of control has decreased,” Craig Cottrill says.

However, he says anyone planning on lighting an open-air fire should take precautions before undertaking a burn.

“If people are thinking of lighting a fire, they should check the forecast conditions and head to www.checkitsalright.nz for information on safely managing a fire.

Bowls fundraiser thanks The Wainuiomata Bowling Club held its 2nd Memorial Day to honour Alex McCauley on Sunday 28/03/2021. The event was also a fundraiser to provide funds for the Wainuiomata Lions, who offer petrol support for the Volunteer Cancer drivers to take Wainuiomata cancer patients from home to Wellington Hospital for their treatment and back home. Wainuiomata is the only suburb in New Zealand that self-

funds their Volunteer Drivers.

The weather was overcast but fine, just great for bowls. 34 teams of 3 took part in the bowls, and a further 60 supporters shared a delicious meal. It was great to see everyone arrive in a jolly mood and some wearing funny dress ups and grooving to the background music as they played.

After years of not having a gala Pukeatua School put together a day of fun, food and crafts to raise funds for the school.

Acting principal Topsy Remuera says they were going to hold a gala last year

but COVID put a stop to it and the students had already worked on crafts for it so the aim was to do it this year.

“We are going to look at trying to have a gala biannually because to have it every year would put a lot of pressure on parents

and staff.”

“We had a great turnout and a lot of cakes and donations. It has been really great,” Topsy says.

Along with classroom stalls local cottage industries were invited to set up in the school hall.

Mountain run a challenge

The concept of holding a mountain run in Wainuiomata came about at a time when the Wainuiomata Athletic and Harrier Club was going through a restructure.

They needed an event that would put the club back on the map and give it a source of income over and above the usual fund raising events of sausage sizzles and raffles.

The area that seemed most suitable was the fire breaks behind Wellington Road as these were well maintained and had great elevation.

Being fire breaks, they had ideal width for competitors to be able to

perform at their best.

The original course lead up past the water tower, along the ridge at the back of Wellington Road north to above Summit Road, where competitors turn around and headed back along the top ridge and up what became known as the Hill from Hell, along the top to the trig and then back down to the water tower finishing at the small park at the bottom of the track a distance of around 12kms.

In 1997, after about a year of planning, began the annual Wainuiomata Mountain Run. The course has changed many times over the years, and with the incorporation of the Wellington Champs and more road safety, we are now at what we think is the best course for this event.

World Haemophilia Day Multiple venues in Wellington, Christchurch, Rotorua, and Hamilton are lighting up red in support of World Haemophilia Day this Saturday, April 17.

On April 17 each year, World Haemophilia Day is celebrated to increase public awareness of haemophilia and other inherited bleeding disorders.

This year multiple venues across NZ join others worldwide in lighting up red for World Haemophilia Day. These include Wellington’s Michael Fowler Centre.

The World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH) says, “World Hemophilia Day is about bringing the global bleeding disorders community together. With the COVID-19 pandemic having a major impact on people with a bleeding disorder, that objective has never been more important.For the Haemophilia Foundation of New Zealand (HFNZ), World Haemophilia Day is also an opportunity to recognise all the support and care people with bleeding disorders get from those around them.

Fun Run raising funds

Raising funds for a whole school camp was the focus of a 1.2 kilometre fun run at Wainuiomata Intermediate School.

Held a few years ago to raise funds for much needed sports equipment this year it was decided to put the money towards assisting the whole school to go on camp.

Assistant principal and sports organiser of the run Isaac Hayes had the job of putting the fun into the run and created various challenges for students along

the way.

“This year we are trying to raise funds so every kid can get to camp at El Rancho in Waikane,” Isaac says.

“There will still be food and accommodation to pay for but everything else will be paid for hopefully.”

The school has four big fundraisers throughout the year but the fun run is the one Isaac says he enjoys doing the most.

A good old fashioned egg race was part of the run along with mud station, paint station, flour bombing and dodge ball.

What’s Cooking... in Quick and Easy Chicken Pad Thai Ingredients:

s 200g dry thick Pad Thai rice noodles s 1 Tbsp peanut oil s 1 medium onion, halved and sliced lengthwise s 400g skinless chicken breast fillets, cut into strips s 2 eggs, beaten s 210g pouch Wattie’s WOK Creations Pad Thai Stir-Fry Sauce s 2 Spring onions, sliced on an angle s 100g bean sprouts s Handful of fresh coriander leaves, chopped s 1/3 cup roasted peanuts, roughly chopped s Lime or lemon wedges (optional)

1. Cook the noodles in plenty of boiling water for approx. 5–7 minutes or until just tender (or according to directions on the packet). Drain. Refresh in cold water and drain again.

2. Heat peanut oil in a wok or frying pan over medium heat. Add the onion and stir-fry until it starts to soften. Increase the heat to high. Add the chicken strips and stir-fry until golden and nearly cooked.

3. Add the beaten eggs and stir-fry until just scrambled and set.

4. Reduce the heat to medium. Add the cooked noodles and Wattie’s WOK Creations Pad Thai Stir-Fry Sauce. Toss for 1–2 minutes until the noodles and chicken are coated and sauce is hot. Toss through the spring onions, bean sprouts, coriander and half the chopped peanuts.

5. Serve in bowls garnished with the remaining chopped peanuts and a wedge of lime or lemon, if wished.

Wally Richards talks about a product that a company has manufactured and used to great advantage on farmland pasture and home gardens.

A very interesting phone call last the week from a South Island Farmer has pressed my excited button. The call was about a product that his company has manufactured and used to great advantage on farmland pasture and home gardens.

I get approached every so often with products that people would like me to promote and with many they are just another ‘me-too’ product similar to what is already established in the home garden market. The first part of our conversation was along those lines and then he mentioned an aspect which was very important and in particular this time of the year.

Microlife is a highly concentrated blend of selected living soil microorganism. It helps create high yielding disease suppressive soils supportive of plant root development and natural nitrogen fixation.

Beneficial soil organisms contribute to plant production by suppressing disease, developing soil structure / depth / softness, improving nutrient utilisation (N,P,K,S,B,Mo etc), increasing the effective rooting area of the plant,

decomposing organic matter to release humic acid/humates and exuding substances (sugars, proteins, hormones, enzymes) to promote plant production.

The right types of organisms create that special X factor in soil. Microlife helps restore the balance of beneficial organisms in your soil and does not introduce foreign organisms.

During our conversation I was told that paddocks that have been treated with Microlife were found to have greatly reduced numbers of grass grubs and those that were found were inactive and in the process of dying.

Now I am excited as in the past there has been some attempts to control grass grubs with bacteria that affects their health and kills them. Like a bacteria disease that effects grass grubs.

There has been preparations made for this but tricky to use with a short shelf life and not easy for the home gardener to use. So here is a product that is not only going to be very beneficial to your soil and gardens but also to your lawn in helping control those nasty grass grubs.

Also you will know that grass grubs are often found in vegetable gardens

and flower gardens when working the soil. They feed on roots of plants and bulbs and cause damage often not recognised.

Here is the magic to fix both lawns and gardens and this time of the year is ideal to use as the grubs are near the surface in the autumn after the soil has moisten up with the autumn rains.

So if you have problems with grass grubs now is the time to use. Microlife comes in 1 litre containers and is used at 15mils per litre of non-chlorinated water to spray over 10sqM. Note: Do not use chlorinated water as it will kill the microbes that you are putting into your soil. Reynolds from Bunny to Warrior?

Adam Reynolds could be an answer to the Warriors halves woes.

The South Sydney Rabbitoh has insisted he is willing to leave New South Wales for his next contract and he would be an excellent fit for the Warriors.

The Kiwi-franchises embarrassing loss to Manly on Friday night was typified by their inability to kick effectively on the last tackle.

The Warriors really haven’t replaced Shaun Johnson in the two seasons he has been gone and while finding a like-for-like was never going to be easy, the current crop of halves simply will not cut-it over a long NRL season.

Reynolds will be 31-years-old next season but there’s a strong chance the Warriors could get two-to-three years out of him.

Reynolds is a respected player having played 211 NRL games since debuting with the Bunnies in 2012.

It would be a short-term fix but one the Warriors look like they desperately need with the impending departure of captain Roger Tuivasa Sheck at the end of the season.

The Warriors have had success with younger halves in the

past like James Maloney, Chad Townsend and Lance Hohaia who were all early on in their careers when they were in New Zealand but the prospect of an experienced halfback has to be a juicy one.

Oh if only Ivan Cleary was still coaching the Warriors, maybe then Nathan would be a Kiwi cult-hero by now.

The team will need a boost of experience next year and Reyn-

olds’ desire to explore his options should get the bean counters at Mt Smart out of their chairs and looking at their collective abacuses.

Losses like the one to Manly simply are not acceptable to a fan base which has been starved of success for almost three decades.

Locals beaten 4-1 by Western Suburbs

By Ryan Imray The weekend saw Round 3 of the Central League and Round 1 for the other 9 Senior teams, as well as over 200 Juniors.

Richard Prouse Park was an eventful place to be with plenty of action for the local Football fanatics and it started with the Mens Reserves at 12:30pm as they hosted Petone. In what was an entertaining encounter with 10 goals, the Reserves had the perfect start to the season as they walked away 6-4 winners.

The main event at 2:30 saw Western Suburbs make the trip to face our Mens First Team in Round 3 of the Central League with both teams searching for their first points of the new season. In front of the vocal Wainui faithful, the game started at a quick pace going end to end but it was the visitors who took their chances. Leading 2-0 at half time, the momentum

was with Western Suburbs but Wainui never gave up. When Oliver Arrowsmith made the game 2-1, the home crowd erupted and momentum shifted as Wainui went chasing the equaliser. As the game went on and the score line never changed, Wainui took some risks and unfortunately, they never paid off and Western Suburbs won the game 4-1.

The weekend was capped off with the Under 17’s team walking out 6 – 0 winner in their opening game against Naenae, Jon Smoothy scoring his first of three goals in 19 seconds. Then the Women’s team won 3-2 against Victoria University thanks to a Heather Smith goal and a Gemma Krebs double.

Overall, it was a good weekend for Wainuiomata Football Club as 7 out of the 10 teams walked away with points in a thrilling weekend that saw 53 goals scored. Here is a look at those results:

Wainuiomata fall to Oriental Rongotai in season opener

By Scott McLeod Saturday marked the start of the 2021 Swindale Shield and the Wainuiomata premier side had a tough first up encounter against Oriental Rongotai at William Jones Park.

Wainuiomata started the game on the back foot with Ories scoring early with their big, strong forward pack dominating the set pieces in particular at scrum time.

Ories scored again in the 18th minute when a sneaky blindside move from the scrum enabled Ories halfback Declan Hay to go over.

Wainuiomata started to apply themselves and were well rewarded when veteran Uale Mai put hardworking No.8 Teru Time through a hole in the midfield for him to score near the posts.

There were some bruising hits from both sides and Wainuiomata were dogged in defence but Ories pressure continued through forward pick and goes which led to another blindside dart for them to score in the corner.

As halftime approached Wainuiomata moved down the field and got themselves back in the contest when a lovely cut out ball by Mai again put fullback Campbell Cowie through the midfield and he stepped the fullback to end the first half Ories up 17-14.

Wainuiomata would have been confident at the half as they were very much still in the contest but unfortunately came out in the second half and made a mistake from the kick off allowing Ories second-five Ajay Va’alepu to sprint through weak defence for the corner.

The next 25 minutes saw Wainuiomata apply pressure to the tiring Ories pack with both possession and territory stats favouring them.

Uale Mai and young debutant halfback Te Heke Rurehe were providing slick delivery and with Teru Time, Sam Smith and Tui Yandall making notable forward drives.

For all the pressure though Ories held strong and Wainuiomata will rue not accumulating points when

they turned down and then missed a penalty opportunity close to the posts. At 22-14 Wainuiomata had a golden chance to get back into the game as a sneaky backline move deep in their 22 outflanked Ories but with numbers on the outside Jason Loves hands let him down with plenty of space ahead of him.

This was a turning point and from there Ories experience told as they sealed the deserved win with two late tries from an intercept and a driving maul.

Wainuiomata scored a last minute consolation try but Ories took the honours with a four try bonus point 37-19 win.

Wainuiomata will take plenty of positives from this first up effort as not many sides will match Ories forward dominance this season.

Once Wainuiomata’s new players gel and build their combinations especially at set piece time they will be a challenge for any

side. Wainuiomata coach Daniel Smith was disappointed with the first up loss.”

We lacked intensity early on but I was proud of how the team fought back in the middle stages to give us a chance of winning”.

He was pleased with the seven debutants who he said “would benefit from the experience and now know what premier rugby is all about”.

For the home side inspirational leader Teru Time was busy on attack and defence, Uale Mai and Te Heke Rurehe looked like a promising partnership and fullback Campbell Cowie showed some nice touches.

Wainuiomata will be looking to register their first win of the season this Saturday as they travel to Haitaitai Park to face Wellington and Smith said “We can’t afford to start the season 0-2 so this week’s trainings will be focused on improving our accuracy at ruck time, limiting turnover ball and having less bodies on the ground in defence”.
