Subdhadra’s daughter Dorothy and her husband approached Ginny to see if she could help.

Ginny swung into action writing to the minister of immigration highlighting the case and pointing out if Subhadra was sent back to Fiji there was no family to take care of her and provide support.

“You have to do a lot of hard work as an MP but when you do get some really good news to tell someone that is a wonderful thing to be able to do,” Ginny says.

“It is a really good example of what a local MP does, systems can’t see faces and situations and part of the job is to highlight what isn’t right and what needs to be fixed.”

Clinic running over holiday break

Whai Oranga O Te Iwi Health and Dental Centre wish the community a Merry Christmas and want to assure the community they are there to help over the holiday period.

Practice manager Keriana Kingi says leading up to Christmas the centre will be operating with-

in its normal hours from 8:30 to 5pm in the lead up to Christmas and with reduced staff but the same hours over the Christmas New Year break.

There will be no evening clinic during the Christmas New Year break, they will start again on the 24th of January,” Keriana says.

Amnesty needed on welfare debt The Green Party is calling for an amnesty on debt the Government is collecting from low income people and families.

“Christmas can be a stressful time for low income whanau. A debt amnesty would create some breathing space for people at the end of what has been a very tough year for everyone,” Green Party Social Development & Employment spokesperson Ricardo Menéndez March said.

“The Government can start by stopping charging penalties and interest on debts, which make up about a quarter of all debt MSD is chasing. This punitive approach ties people into a cycle of further debt.

I started getting organised early this year so mine is nearly done.

I have just finished sorting it this week.

My wife does the last minute present buying.

I am always last minute.

That way they are creative ideas.

GARDENING THIS WEEK What to plant: By Wally Richards

I was asked the question this week about what we should be planting vegetable wise at this time of the year.

A lot depends on how much room you have and how keen you are on growing your own vegetables.

If you are fortunate and have a good size section such as quarter an acre then you can be fairly self VX൶ FLHQW LQ IUHVK SURGXFH If you have only a little land around your home then you have to be innovative with your limitations.

There are some nice planters you can purchase such as on Trade Tested 150 litre and 112 litre made from durable plastic at reasonable prices.

These can be sat on concrete or at the edge of the lawn or where a garden used to be.

Place weedmat under them where ever you choose to put them.

I have several of these which DUULYHG LQ D À DW SDFN DQG ZHUH easy to assemble.

Filled two thirds full with compost (I prefer Daltons Compost) and then I spread the likes of chicken manure (or any animal manures).

Blood & Bone along with Wallys Calcium & Health, Wallys BioPhos, Wallys Unlocking your Soil and Wallys Ocean Solids mean your vegetables will have all the nutrients, minerals and trace element that they would like. That means the produce will be super healthy, have marvellous flavour and be so good for your immune system.

Over the top of the goodies you put a further layer of compost about 4cm thick.

It is into this layer that you can plant seeds or seedlings.

With the longest day of the year next week we have optimum hours of daylight for growing.

You should have salad crops currently growing and harvesting as they mature such as lettuce, radish, spinach, silverbeet, spring onions etc.

The key here is to have small plantings every 2-3 weeks so you will have succession crops for harvesting.

For instance you might plant 4-6 lettuce plants now and in about 3-4 weeks another 4-6. :KHQ WKH ¿ UVW ORW DUH EHLQJ

harvested you plant the third lot and that will take you well into ZLQWHU EHIRUH \RX ¿ QG WKDW WKH low day light hours take much longer to mature the plants.

You can progressively harvest the larger outside leaves and let the plant grow more leaves.

Silver beet is a great one for this type of harvesting.

Now here is a little secret that you can use when you buy a punnet or cell pack that has many seedlings, much more than you want to plant at one time.

Before you try to separate them put the punnet into a bucket of ZDWHU DQG DIWHU LW KDV ¿ QLVKHG bubbling remove all the seedlings from the plastic.

Now working underwater you FDQ VHSDUDWH R൵ WKH QXPEHU RI plants you wish to plant.

Only take the bigger more developed plants and plant them.

You are left with one or more clumps of seedlings so rather than throw them away plant into the soil as a clump.

Because they are over crowded they will hold and not grow much.

In two weeks time you can lift the clump and under water separate those you wish to plant.

This can be repeated a few times before the seedlings become too stressed and not worth planting.

December is also the first month to plant your winter crops of brassicas.

The six packs that have two FDEEDJH WZR FDXOLÀ RZHUV DQG two broccoli are ideal for succession planting so about every two weeks you plant another lot.

The last month for planting these winter crops would be end of March.

If you have ample land and grow potatoes for Christmas

or storage then likely the early crops will have been harvested or ready to harvest soon.

It pays to either bandicoot a few potatoes out from under the plants to determine size and health.

If you don’t feel any good size tubers under the plants then lift one or two and if only small marble size potatoes are found and they are re-shooting then you have had attacks from the potato psyllids.

If the tubers are of good size then cut one in half to inspect the inside for dark rings; if found then the crop is ruined from psyllid attacks.

If neither of these problems exist then harvest your crop as soon as possible so you do not lose good potatoes to late attacks.

If you do not want to lift then FXW WKH WRSV R൵ DQG FRYHU WKH stubble so the psyllids have nothing to destroy.

My thoughts are lift crop and use that ground after applying more goodies for planting up winter crops.

Root crops such as carrots, parsnips, onions and beetroot can be planted by sowing seeds into loose fertile soil.

Sprinkle the seeds into a furrow or broadcast over a square metre, spray the seeds with Magic Botanic Liquid before covering to speed up germination.

Keep moist by regular waterings. Later on when you have a good strike you can thin out the planting to give the bigger better plants more room to develop.

Root crops are always best grown from seeds, especially carrots and parsnips as they do not transplant well, and you only get short stubby carrots to harvest. ,W LV DOVR D JRRG LGHD WR VWDUW R൵ a couple of tomato plants now.

If you can’t purchase then grow from the laterals you are removing from your existing plants.

Now is about the last chance to grow heat loving plants such as capsicum, chili, egg plants, cucumbers, pumpkins.

All of which are gross feeders so you could not only use Wallys Secret Tomato Food but also a drink every week of Wallys Liquid Plant food.

Food donations need for Pataka Kai

With the holiday season about to begin Kokoiri Marae’s Pataka Kai is putting the call out for donations of food.

Just last week Koru Homes answered the call and dropped off hundreds of parcels of food to go into Christmas hampers to be delivered to the hundreds of people in need and the organisation hopes

to do more in the community in the coming year.

Boon Tan procurement manager for Koru Homes says they have always been big on community projects and want to give back to the community as much as they can.

“We want to give back to the community especially at times like this when people are losing their jobs and there is unemployment and the need for food,” he says.

Pataka Kai manager Janice Awatere says there is a shortage of food at the Pataka and the food donated by Koru will go into Christmas hampers.

“The donated kai will go into 200 Christmas hampers and we have some donated hams to go in as well but the demand is still out there for more,” Janice says.

Pataka Kai was the only food bank in the region open during the lockdowns.

Requests for food donations has increased - more than doubled over the past few months with families struggling to make ends meet.

Pataka Kai support around 200 families a week.

They are always in need of food donations, especially around this time of year, so are particularly grateful to Koru Homes for their generous donation.

Pataka Kai is a resident led,

c r owd s o u r c e d s olut io n t o immediate and local need, rescuing food and encouraging the co-sharing between neighbours to strengthen communities.

The organisation also run a Koha based pre loved clothing store on site and all proceeds go towards Pataka Kai For those willing to donate please contact Janice Awatere on 021 0433 232.

Helping each other through COVID-19 With more cases of COVID-19 in the community, it’s possible you and your whānau will be exposed to the virus. To make sure you’re ready, have a plan in case you or someone in your house tests positive and needs to isolate.

Everyone who tests positive for COVID-19, and those who live with them, will need to isolate for at least 10 days to stop the spread of the virus. If someone else in your house tests positive for COVID-19, they’ll be advised how much longer they need to isolate.

If you’re travelling and away from home, know how you will get home or self isolate where you are.

It’s normal to feel anxious about isolating with COVID-19.

While isolating, you will need to have all of your food and necessities delivered. You cannot go to work, school, church or any community or private events or gatherings. No one outside of the people you live with can visit or enter the home.

Most fully-vaccinated people with COVID-19 are likely to have a mild to moderate illness and will fully recover at home.

Who can help out Be prepared in case you’re exposed to COVID-19. Speak with a neighbour, friend, or whānau about the support you could need. For instance, dropping off food and supplies, and help with activities outside the house. Being ready is about people, conversations, connections and knowing what to do, so your whānau and community can help each other when needed.

You’ll have a support person who will contact you often to check that you and your whānau are safe and supported – even if you’re travelling and away from home. You will also get a telephone number for 24-hour health support.

If you need more help or support to manage at home, you can access a COVID-19 welfare line.

Have none for the road Road safety charity Brake is appealing to partygoers and organisers to ensure everyone in their group gets to and from celebrations safely over the festive season and summer.

With the country in the new Covid Protection Framework and people arranging Christmas parties and other gatherings, Brake is reminding everyone to plan their travel, and if driving to events, to make sure the designated driver stays sober.

Brake’s Driving for Zero campaign urges drivers not to drink any amount of alcohol or take any drugs before getting behind the wheel. The charity also urges family and friends to speak out to stop a loved one drink

or drug driving.

Figures show that in 2019, alcohol and/or drugs was a factor in 137 fatal and over 1,500 injury crashes resulting in 160 deaths and over 2,000 injuries. Research shows that drinking any amount of alcohol can affect your driving.

Caroline Perry, Brake’s New Zealand director says, “as a charity that supports people bereaved and injured in crashes, we witness the suffering that drink and drug driving inflict, and appeal to everyone to help put a stop to it. We want everyone to enjoy this holiday season and get to their destination safely. If you’re driving home from

celebrations it’s vital you take your responsibility for people’s safety seriously. Even small amounts of alcohol or drugs increase your risk of crashing, so even if you feel okay after a drink, the reality is that if you get behind the wheel you’re putting yourself and others in needless danger. The only safe

amount of alcohol to have if you’re driving is none.”

Brake is also working with e-scooter company Neuron to remind riders not to drink and ride, and to arrange safe alternative transport instead. Neuron’s Festive ScootSafe campaign will use social media videos and ScootSafe events to remind

riders of key safety points when using e-scooters.

“Whilst it might be tempting to use an e-scooter after a few drinks, riding one can put you at increased risk of being involved in an incident, so organise safe, alternative transport such as a taxi or public transport instead”, she says.

s 2 (8.5-ounce) pouches precooked basmati rice s ¼ cup lower-sodium soy sauce s 1 tablespoon chili garlic sauce s 1½ teaspoons hoisin sauce s 2 tablespoons peanut oil, divided s 1 pound boneless pork shoulder (Boston butt), trimmed and thinly sliced into 1-inch pieces s 1 large egg, lightly beaten s 1½ cups chopped red bell pepper s 1 cup frozen shelled edamame s Thinly sliced green onions, divided

1. Heat rice according to package directions.

2. Combine soy sauce, chili garlic sauce, and hoisin in a bowl. Heat a wok or large skillet over high heat. Add 1 tablespoon oil; swirl to coat. Add pork to pan in a single layer; cook 2 minutes, without stirring. Stir-fry pork for 4 minutes or until done. Add pork to soy sauce mixture; toss to coat.

3. Add egg to pan; cook 45 seconds or until set. Remove egg from pan; cut into bite-sized pieces.

2. Add remaining 1 tablespoon oil to pan; swirl to coat.

Add bell pepper, edamame, and 1/2 cup onions; stir-fry 1 minute. Add rice; stir-fry 2 minutes. Add pork and soy sauce mixture; cook 1 minute, stirring constantly. Top rice mixture with egg and remaining onions.

Going to bat for Rosco I’ll defend Ross Taylor.

Many people are now calling for the end of his test career after a sub-par sub-continent effort against India over the past fortnight.

It’s hard to argue the 37-year-old’s form has dipped, he’s averaged 28 over the past two years and the last of his 19 centuries was in November 2019.

His last innings in India was visually offensive, full of wild

shots which resembled a man out of touch.

Despite all this, Taylor deserves a chance to make things right during the New Zealand summer.

The New Zealand cricket team are not the All Blacks, they can’t just throw players aside with the calibre of Taylor and plug-in the next guy.

Yes, Devon Conway and Will Young could slot into the No 4

spot while the other potentially opens but that will take time to see the fruit of that move flourish much like Tom Blundell taking the wicket-keeping duties from the retired BJ Watling.

Rosco, as one of the top three batsmen ever produced by this country, deserves the right to call time on his career on his terms and at the very least, that deserves to be on home soil.

Society is full of people wanting to know ‘what have you done for me lately?’ - besides an unbeaten and important half century in the World Test Championship final, Taylor has not done much.

However, he has seen it all and done it all in his 14-year test career.

So to fellow New Zealand cricket tragics, cut the old warhorse a little slack.

He was there when the cupboard

was empty, now that’s it’s full, let’s not become that greedy child at Christmas who is not thankful for what they have.

Taylor is a team man, he won’t put his needs ahead of the team.

When he knows he is done, he will say it.

I’m hoping for a couple more tongue-poking celebrations between now and when he pulls stumps.

Footballer banned from sport for doping violation A club footballer has received a four-month ban from all sport from the Sport Tribunal of New Zealand, backdated to 16 August 2021, after admitting the use and possession of Ibutamoren.

Ibutamoren is a ‘Growth hormone secretagogue’, a class of drugs that increase the secretion of growth hormones. It is illegal to buy in New Zealand without prescription and is prohibited in sport at all times. Growth hormone secretagogues are purported to aid

recovery from injury, increase lean muscle mass and decrease body fat.

Medsafe brought the purchase to the attention of Drug Free Sport New Zealand (DFSNZ) following a New Zealand Customs seizure in March 2021.

“We know from experience that recreational athletes say they would not take part if they thought their competitors had an unfair advantage,” said Drug Free Sport New Zealand Chief Executive, Nick Paterson. “Many Kiwis play week-

end sport and athletes of all ages, from our kids through to masters, and all want to know that the games they are playing are clean and the integrity of their competitions is protected. Doping – intentional or not – compromises both.”

“The substance in this case is illegal to buy without prescription as well as being banned in sport. If athletes want to stay safe, for their own health as well as the integrity of their competition, diligent enquiry will often reveal much of this

information.”

“We would like to thank New Zealand Football for their support of clean sport at all levels of competition, which has resulted in a significant growth in NZ Football members being educated since 2019.”

The athlete was sanctioned under the 2021 Sports Anti-Doping Rules, which reflect the 2021 World Anti-Doping Code (the Code). As Drug Free Sport New Zealand asked for in its submissions to

WADA, this Code provides for differential sanctioning for recreational athletes when compared to high performance athletes, recognising they have different support structures around them. In this case, the Code and the SADR allowed for a reduced sanction for the athlete.

Metlink commits to wage increase Ben’s housing From December 1 Metlink will be increasing Tranzurban driver wages to $27 an hour as part of its commitment to retain and attract drivers across the region.

The move will take Tranzurban drivers up to a flat rate of $27 an hour, with Wellington drivers seeing around a $3 an hour increase, Hutt Valley drivers $3.80 and Wairarapa drivers $4.25. This latest action follows a series of ongoing initiatives throughout the course of the year by Metlink to improve drivers conditions and wages, including: support for Fair Pay Agreements, bringing all driver’s base rates up to the Living Wage of $22.75, wage increases and a reduction in split shifts for drivers

at NZBus, as well as the trial of free sanitary and health products for frontline staff at various locations.

Scott Gallacher, General Manager for Metlink, says the increase is part of Metlink’s ongoing work with each of its operators to bring more certainty to staff and more reliability to passengers.

“We work closely with all of our operators to understand their pressures as we work towards the common goal of having a wellrecognised workforce and a reliable and safe network for our customers and communities. Earlier in the year we worked with Tranzurban to introduce the Living Wage for their Hutt Valley, Porirua and Wairarapa drivers to bring rates

in line with drivers based in Wellington City. This latest initiative helps move all drivers well beyond the living wage and I’d like to thank Tranzurban for the open and constructive manner in which they have partnered with us to achieve this outcome.

“The next stage is looking at how shifts are put together. With both good wages and good shifts in place we can ensure public transport remains an attractive employment option.”says Scott Gallacher.

As part of the agreement Metlink will be working with the Tranzurban team on the creation of new and improved shifts and the rolling out of timetable adjustments.

Decline in students taking key NCEA maths standards Research by a Master of Education student from Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington shows a drop in students studying key maths standards.

The research, by Sarah Howell, found the number of secondary

students studying algebra and calculus at NCEA Level 1 and 2 declined between 2013 and 2019.

Dr Bronwyn Wood, senior lecturer in the School of Education at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellingon, believes the decline reflects the

design of the NCEA system.

The research found the number of students studying the key algebra standard had declined across all decile levels. However, there were marked differences between school deciles, Ms Howell says.

The Opportunities Hutt South candidate and scientist Ben Wylie-van Eerd is getting started early campaigning for the next election and one of his key concerns is housing.

He says both the Labour and National parties have a vested interest in the continued rise in house prices.

Ben says the messaging coming from the government is house prices are expected to continue to rise and people are going to respond to that.

“Central government needs to return some funding to local councils so they can get on with allowing developments without breaking their own budgets,” Ben says.

“Right now central government is taking almost all of the tax take and we have the lowest share of revenue going to any country in the OECD.” Increasing density is one way of dealing with the problem and it can be done well but what is missing is a really coherent plan to show we can do density well.

“If you design it right it doesn’t mean you have to give up on

green spaces or privacy,” Ben says.

“If it is done in the city then there is less pressure on places like Wainuiomata where people are very keen on their privacy and their green spaces.”

“I don’t think what the government is putting up is density done well it is density done in any shape or form.”

One of the key thing to do he says is increasing density in the city centres near train stations.

“Young people are looking at the situation in New Zealand and can’t make it work and they are leaving,” he says.

Ben is a scientist with experience doing research and development for innovative companies both overseas and in New Zealand.

He became interested in politics during my university education when he realised that a great many of the problems facing the human race sat outside of the realm of science.

He is passionate about the issues facing young people and the effect this has on their mental health, especially the cost of housing and the challenge of climate change.
