chilly winter evenings.

JANUARY

Much like 2020, 2019 began with a look back to the year before diving into the new year.

Youngster Paris Nicholson headed to the United States to explore what it takes to be a backup dancer while the Wainuiomata Cricket Club maintained their unbeaten record for the season.

YOUth Inspire began their new drivers’ training programme which had youngsters learning to drive with local mentors to obtain their restricted licence.

FEBRUARY

Students started the new school year as the weather began to heat up and Wellington Water asked residents to be mindful of their water usage.

Many of the top temperatures for New Zealand were in Wainuiomata where it hit 33.5C on one of the earliest days of February-- the local pool was popular that day!

The Health Minister announces a mental health support trial to begin across the Wellington Region to support youth aged 18 to 25 with mild to moderate mental health needs.

The Shared Pathway takes another step towards the finished product by temporarily closing on the Wainuiomata side to create and seal the path.

MARCH

The town hosted the national Waterways competition this month which is held every two years. Over 30 firefighting teams

from across the country come to test out their hose running and pump-operating skills to the test over two days.

The much loved Rural Fest hit the town for its third year in a row on March 10.

Wainuiomata has a record rainfall and sees more than a month worth in a day. March 8, saw 93.2mm with 78.6mm of that in just four hours in the morning.

The local Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease group celebrated 25 years of meeting at the local library.

A moment of silence was held on Queen Street at 1.32pm for those lost in the Christchurch Terrorist attack.

The long-anticipated college reunion was held with hundreds of old friends coming together many years after the Wainuiomata College was closed down.

APRIL

It was a ripper start to April for Fernlea Primary School students who took out the Piri Weepu Cup in the annual Rippa Rugby competition.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern visited Te Atiawa Nui Tonu Kohanga Reo and was greeted by a warm group hug by students.

Waiu Park’s wetland was continued to be worked by passionate locals Gary James and John Groombridge.

The mural featuring the ‘It’s okay to ask for help’ motto painted by Rangatahi Learning Centre

students was unveiled on the fence of the Fire Station.

Another vibrant mural featuring large whales was painted by Tihei Rangatahi students and artist Tina Rae Carter on the corner of Hair Street.

MAY

As the international market for plastic recycling shrinks, the Hutt City Council changed the local systems to recycling. The regularly used recycling bins at Frederick Wise Park were changed, not supporting cans, aluminium or plastic recycling.

For the community, this was a huge blow as Wainuiomata is the highest user of community recycling bins.

Wainuiomata’s Junior Rugby club under 7s team played in the West 7s tournament and smashed the competition, winning 12-10 against Norths.

Mere Wanoa, Kerri DonoghueCox, Teresa Olsen and Mate Waiwai from the Kokiri Marae Maori Womans Refuge in Lower Hutt celebrated 30 years of service to the cause.

Jackie Patea-Fereti won the Tranzit Group Sportswoman of the Year award and hockey player Stephen Jenness became a first-time supreme award winner at the Hutt Valley Sports Awards.

JUNE

The much anticipated day finally arrived on Queens Birthday when the Shared Pathway finally opening to the public, a great success.

A FUN MORNING OF PLAY FOR PRESCHOOL AGED CHILDREN

World-famous marmalade man, Graeme Cunningham, had success a The World Orginal Marmalade Awards this month, including two golds and seven silvers. This was the fourth year he entered the competition.

A homeless strategy was approved at the Hutt City Council after many years of lobbying which will see $1.6 million in funding support for families and those at risk from becoming homeless.

Netballer Geraldine Solia-Gibb heads to England to play for the Samoan World Cup netball team.

JULY

Skies lit up with colourful fireworks at the yearly Matariki festival. This year it was held at Frederick Wise Park with hundreds of locals flocking to celebrate the Maori new year.

A treasure trove of classic vintage firefighting equipment was opened in the National Museum of Forest and Rural Fire which is located in The Rural Bushfire Force building on The Strand.

The Girl Guides celebrated five girls receiving their Queens Service Medal, the highest award a Girl Guide can achieve.

Life City Chuch says goodbye to their old location at 1 Parkway Road and begins their journey relocating to Queen Street and their rebrand into Hills.

The Wainuiomata Wine Club turns 40 years old and celebrates with a glass or two of wine.

The Pacific is coming to the capital

AUGUST

New dance crew, Fernlea Fiyah, heads to the coveted Wellington Regional Hip Hop Dance Competition and win the school group category.

It was a historic win for the Lions Rugby Leauge Club who won their division finals, beating the Trentham Titans 30-26.

The community took it in their own hands when concerns arose around the potentially problematic running of the local Cleanfill located on Coast Road.

Several public meetings were held between the community and organisers to debate the consented extension and operation.

The new welcome sign and pouwhenua for Wainuiomata Hill start to take shape by carvers Rikki Porter-Samuels and Tamariki Ferguson.

Ulalei Pua Netball team has a historic win for the club winning the Hutt Valley Premier 1 Championships.

SEPTEMBER

The fight to become predator-free by 2050 reaches Wainui-

omata with a Predator Free group officially beginning to set traps and hold meetings. Wainuiomata was one of the last locations in the immediate area to have a group.

Fitzroy Tavern switches the pokies off for a day to support the gambling harm awareness movement.

Many groups located on the old Moohan Street College grounds, like the Koha Shed, YMCA Gymnastics and boxing group, find they may have to find a new home as construction continues on the new housing development.

Kim Harris wins Published Writer in English award at the Maori Literature Trusts 2019 Pikihuia Awards for her story ‘Kokiri ki Mua’, ‘Charge Forward’.

OCTOBER

The most significant moment of October was the results of the local body elections for Hutt City which saw Campbell Barry become the youngest Mayor to be elected in New Zealand’s history.

Keri Brown and Josh Briggs were also elected onto the council.

Two theatre companies show-

cased their talent this month: Acting Out Youth Theatre put on a thrilling performance of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ at Wainuiomata High School auditorium while the Little Theatre performed ‘Mamma Mia!’ to sold-out audiences.

Angelique Te Ruana wins the prestigious Maioga award at this year’s APRA Silver Scrolls awards with the song ‘Ka Ao’ written with Tyna Keelan and her uncle Matauranga Te Ruana. The ballad is sung in Te Reo. NOVEMBER

Charlie’s Sushi was burgled twice in a weekend which prompted an outpouring of support from the community to help fundraise money to replace the two infinity heaters that were stolen.

Moana Kuma is awarded Volunteer of the Year at the College Sport Wellington Sportsperson of the Year Awards for her contribution to Wainuiomata High School’s sports department.

Wainuiomata’s Parkland Motel is the spooky focus for an episode in TVNZ’s Wellington Paranormal which airs to the nation.

Block Vandal spreads joy by painting the cinder blocks at the of Wainuiomata Hill in Gracefield with popular Lego characters like Batman, Spiderman and Wonderwoman.

DECEMBER

Firefighter John May received his 50-year service medal for the Fire Brigade with a celebratory dinner.

After months of hard work by passionate volunteers and Love Wainuiomata workers, the new community deck located outside the Community Hub Library was opened. The deck spans 110sqm and is a space for all ages.

Streets light up with Christmas cheer as the Santa parade and Christmas in the Nui takes to Queen Street for a day of fun for whanau.

It is announced transitional housing, made up of 34 homes, will be built on the old Wood Hatton Primary school lot on Wood Street. Housing is expected to be completed by winter 2020.

The annual Wellington Pasifika Festival will be showcasing the sights, sounds, and flavours of the Pacific.

In its fifteenth year, the event attracts over 15,000 visitors to experience traditional and contemporary music, performances, delicious food, and activities from Samoa, Cook Islands, Tonga, Niue, Fiji, Tokelau, Solomon Islands, and Papua New Guinea.

The free, whanau friendly event will be hosted by Mai Nights’ Brook Ruscoe, and will also showcase kai from all over the Pacific. There’ll be stalls and workshops, entertainers and activities, all celebrating the sights, sounds and culture of our neighbours.

Pasifika Festival is this weekend from midday to 6pm at the Odlins Plaza and will feature Wainuiomata Samoan Methodist Church Youth Group.

‘Les Miserables’ auditions Wainuiomata Little Theatre will be putting on the production of ‘Les Miserables’ in August 2020 and are calling all thespians to join the cause.

They will be holding auditions for this show on February 1, 2 and 8. Times are filling up fast so book your timeslot before you miss out!

inbrief news Support the Heart Foundation Big Heart Appeal With more than 120 people in New Zealand each week dying from heart disease, the Heart Foundation is calling for people to show their big heart and donate to its Big Heart Appeal on 21 and February 21 and 22, 2020.

“Every year around 6300 New Zealanders die of heart disease and the Heart Foundation funds research to save lives and improve the quality of life for the 180,000 New Zealanders living with heart disease,” says Heart Foundation medical director Gerry Devlin.

“It’s staggering to think that the number of deaths is the size of the entire population of Matamata in the North Island. By donating to the Big Heart Appeal, people are helping to save the lives of loved ones all across New Zealand.”

Street collections will take place on Friday February 21 and Saturday February 22, 2020.

Children’s theatre in Moera Colourful costumes, oversized props and catchy tunes are sure to delight in an upcoming children’s theatre production.

‘Snowbright and the Oopsie Woopsies’ will be performed at the Moera Community Hall in Lower Hutt from January 20 to 25.

Everything about the show is designed to enable children to see themselves and relate to the characters.

Shanti retires from teaching

Last year Shanti Narayan retired from teaching at Wainuiomata Intermediate School after 29 years.

“It is the best school ever,” Shanti says.

Wainuiomata has a very specific character, she adds.

“Children are so giving and so kind. They can be cheeky sometimes but you have to understand what they bring to the community.”

Shanti began her teaching career in Fiji, where she grew up, as a home economics and science teacher at a high school level.

When she migrated to New Zealand with her husband Prakash, her teaching career started in Christchurch after a series of events lead her to retrain at the teacher’s college.

“I wanted to know the curriculum. I was scared about teaching in New Zealand because it was very different to Fiji,” she says.

“All I wanted to do was get into the classroom.”

Over her 29 years at the school, Shanti says the most memorable comes from the relationships with students.

“Just getting to know the child and helping to develop their confidence over the two years.

“Seeing how they grow, their thinking and their management in themselves. The light bulb moment when it clicks, that’s when it is most rewarding.

“I don’t regret anything. I have enjoyed every day at this school and this school is so needy for learning,” she says.

Shanti knew she wanted to leave when she still had energy.

“As a teacher in the classroom, you always have to be there for your students and have time and energy to provide the best lessons.

“And as you grow older you lose energy. Now it’s time to look after me,” she says.

Shanti and her husband will be heading on a cruise in April where they will explore the Mediterranean and check out Chicago, Amsterdam and Japan.

Then she will just “chill with family,” she says.

“I’ll have more time for my two grandchildren and spend energy watching them grow.”

Shopping mall construction begins A demolition survey report was undertaken on the current Shopping Mall on Queen Street which identified the existence of asbestos-containing materials (ACM).

This needs to be removed before demolition can happen.

The ACM removal will be completed in several stages. The entryway on Queen Street, will be permanently closed throughout the removal, a spokesperson from Countdown says.

“This enables us to start demoli-

tion and the removal of asbestoscontaining materials to make way for the new Countdown supermarket and businesses.”

The entrance from The Strand will reopen in February 2020 once the work has been completed.

“We know this a popular thoroughfare but public safety is our priority so I trust you understand our reasons for this approach,” a spokesperson says.

“There is no public risk with the removal of asbestos-containing

materials.”

The current Countdown store, the McDonalds and the Ministry of Social Development will remain open during the asbestos removal, demolition and build of the new Countdown store.

Neighbouring stores like Charlies Sushi, Labour MP Ginny Andersen’s office and Hills will not be impacted other than by expected construction noise.

“A bit of noise and demolition is all worth it in finally getting a new mall,” Ginny Andersen says.

Access to the existing Countdown store, the Ministry of Social Development and McDonald’s are all through their current entrances. The Wainui Cakery will be temporarily closed throughout the ACM removal but will reopen towards the end of January 2020.

“We’re excited to start our demolition work and we’re looking forward to providing a brand new supermarket for our 103 Wainuiomata team members and our customers,” a spokesperson says.

Mere retires from refuge work

After working for 33 years at Kokiri Marae Maori Women’s Refuge in Lower Hutt, Mere Wanoa is retiring.

“I just feel like it is time to go,” she says.

“I don’t know how I feel about it but I know it is time to hand it over.”

Mere was one of the founding members to establish the refuge and has worked as the safety house coordinator since it began.

Known to many women and children as whaea Mere, she has devoted her time, love and energy to support them.

Mere has driven her work van around the Hutt Valley, Wainuiomata and Wellington area for years, picking up donations, women and their children, taking rubbish from homes, dropping off furniture, carting the lawnmower

and weed eater and dropping off food parcels.

“The reward is knowing women have moved on, even if it is only a little bit.

It is just knowing they have improved,” Mere says.

“It has taught me not to be too judgmental and to be patient.

“I’ll miss the children the most.”

Working for the refuge was an unexpected part of her life, she explains, however one she is very proud of.

During her retirement, Mere will be joining her sister to clean the Wainuiomata Marae and be dedicating her time to helping her whanau.

Kokiri Marae Maori Women’s Refuge team expresses their appreciation and to thank whaea Mere for the many years of love and devotion given to the refuge.

Joey pouches for Australian bushfires Kereru Creative have been putting to use a large amount of fabric that was donated by sewing Joey pouches for Australian Wildlife support last week.

Kereru Creative regularly holds sewing days and they will be held on Friday’s throughout January.

They expect to sew around 200 joey pouches.

The pouches will then be delivered to the Lower Hutt drop off point and shipped to Australia in a container where they will be dispersed directly to the Australian wildlife most at risk.

Jamboree fun for Scouts group For 11 days the 1st Wainuiomata Parish Scouts headed to Mystery Creek, Hamilton, for the 22nd NZ Scout Jamboree which happens once every three years.

“The kids had a blast, with days of eye-opening adventures and personal growth,” group leader Yvonne Ting says.

There were activities like a Market Day, Mystery tours, Fast and Furious, Adventure Valley, Badge trading and Mud missions.

The youth spent the time in a patrol of six and were able to experience paddleboating, jetboating, drift bikes, archery tag, smallbore rifle shooting, cooking and cleaning, concerts, rock wall climbing and team challenges.

In preparation for the jamboree, the

Scouts group held several fundraising events throughout the year to help transport the 10 children to Hamilton.

1st Wainuiomata Parish Scouts give a ‘big thank you’ to the Four Winds Foundation, Winton and Margaret Bear Charitable Trust, Yvonne says.

“And to our amazing community for their support in getting our youth from Wainuiomata to Jamboree.”

“Local sponsors include Kotuku Cafe, Clives Chemist, Shott, Event Cinema, Geeves Scaffolding, ex-Parkway Scouts and Staglands for their kind donations which helped our Scouts get to Jamboree for an unforgettable experience,” Yvonne says.

The not so super about Super Rugby Super Rugby is just over two weeks away and that’s part of the problem.

The rugby competition of my childhood will celebrate its 25th anniversary this year and it will have its earliest ever start on January 31.

As a cricket tragic, this is extremely early and it will clash with a Black Caps v India game.

The Crusaders will play the Waratahs in the opening round in

Nelson.

It will be interesting to see what kind of crowd that draws.

The season may start early but so will the games at night, moving 30 minutes forward as the New Zealand Rugby Union tries to entice dwindling numbers of fans back into the stands.

The early seasons of the competition, with its simple 12 team, play everyone format, was a winner.

A ticket to a game was in hot demand.

Now, not so much.

Even the Crusaders who play their games in Christchurch which has been starved of international rugby, can’t draw an audience because of their crappy stadium which offers zero fan positives in terms of an experience.

Competition for the entertainment dollar is fierce and New Zealand is

over-saturated with the amount of rugby being played.

The days of an overpriced ticket to go with the over-priced, frothy beer, warm over-priced chips and pies, are long over.

Look at America for how they do sport.

Easy access to the ground, plenty of food options, and a superior spectacle.

I love the Crusaders (not their new

logo) but I can’t go to their games, I can’t endorse the mediocrity that it is as a spectacle.

The rugby is fine but there is more to the fan experience than that.

When Super Rugby started in 1996, it did so on March 1.

There was a clear break between summer and winter codes.

The lines keep getting blurred and the money is staying in the pockets of the fans.

Big year for sporting students Four Wainuiomata Intermediate School students had an outstanding year of sports last year.

Aayla Toman, Trinity Tauaneai, Riana Le’afa-Palei and Paige Tauaneai have achieved seven trophies between them for their school, making it one of the most successful years.

The four girls have won their Rugby Sevens, Rugby Tens, Mixed Touch, Girls Basketball, Girls Softball, National Rugby Sevens Aims and girls Ki-o-Rahi championships.

“The girls have done really well,” assistant principal Isaac Hayes says.

“This is definitely the most talented group of girls come through.

Especially these four girls.”

Next year the school aims to take both the boys and the girls team to rugby Aims Games since the girls took out the championship this year.

They are currently looking for sponsorship for this year. If you would like to support the sports teams contact Wainuiomata Intermediate School.

Golf club marks end of the year with tournament Wainuiomata Golf Club held its end of year Christmas Hamper tournament on Sunday, December 15.

The tournament was a modif ied Greensomes event. Overcast conditions and a freshening northerly greeted the 40 pairs playing.

The clouds were parting, allowing the sun to shine through, as the shotgun blast signalled the start of play at 10am.

After their rounds, the players adjourned to the clubhouse for the annual

presentation of the club trophies.

Club patron Dame Winnie Laban was present to hand out the trophies, with the following club champions being presented: Silver ladies Maryanne Gray, Bronze ladies Lynley Reynolds, Senior men Caleb Kahui, Intermediate men John Xu, Junior men Paul Brosnan.

Prizes were then handed out for the day’s competition with Grant Rattray and Wayne Ross taking first

place, from Caleb and Grizz Kahui, and Ralph Chenery and Scott McLeod taking third place.

Winners for the mixed pairs were Shirley Hay and Colin Triggell. Second place went to Elaine and Micheal Paterson, with Claire and Warren Hughes third.

A great time was had by all, and the club now looks forward to 2020, and the club’s 50th Jubilee Celebration starting on Friday February 28.

Get outdoors with upcoming summer events Wellingtonians will have the opportunity to get into the great outdoors and explore their region with the Greater Wellington Regional Council annual summer events programme kicking off this week.

Starting with the Mega Bug g y Wa l k i n t h e Wainuiomata Recreation last week, events will run across the regional parks right through to late March.

Greater Wellington Environment committee chair Penny Gaylor says

the events programme offers something for everyone and encourages communities to spend more time enjoying nature.

“Last year’s events were more popular than ever drawing in over 10,000 attendees across three months, and we would like to see that number increase again this year.

The highlight event during summer is usually the farm day at Battle Hill Farm Forest Park, Cr Gaylor explains.

“The day gives chil-

dren and their families the chance to get out into the countryside and learn about sustainable farming, feed the eels, watch cooking demonstrations and generally enjoy a good day out in the country.

“Farm day has been getting more popular each year, with 2019’s attendance reaching over 3500 people,” Cr Gaylor says.
