Teenage actors from the northern suburbs have been charged with making a classic come to life for the Khandallah Arts Theatre later this month.

The upcoming production is Auckland playwright Mike Hudson’s fresh adaptation of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.

It features a large cast, many of them teenagers from the northern suburbs.

Young cast tackle the classic tale of Tom Sawyer Continued from page 1.

Getting to grips with the accents, customs and social mores of the American South in the early nineteenth century has been a challenge for these young thespians.

Thomas Neville from Ngaio, who plays the lead role of Tom says the close nature of the community comes across in the play.

“Back in those days the community was a lot closer and everyone knew each other, whereas now you just know who you know rather than everyone around you.”

Scout Orange from Northland, (Tom’s crush, Becky Thatcher) agrees that times have changed, especially for young people.

“The games we play now are quite different from what they did in the 1840s, especially the trading of dead animals. That’s something you don’t bring to school nowadays.”

However, according to Lauren Taylor from Khandallah, who plays Amy, some things have not changed.

“The boys still get confused by the girls.

“Fellow Khandallah actor, Josh Harford (Joe), echoes the sentiment.

do random things that could get them killed, an example I’m planning not to follow.”

Sharing the stage with adults, many of whom are seasoned actors, has also proved to be a good learning experience for the younger cast members.

“Older people set an example for what we should be doing on stage and how we should be acting,” says Alfie Byrne from Khandallah (Huck). Scout agrees. “It’s good having adults there as an example, especially for the accents.”

Lauren says of why she likes acting: “You get to be childish and annoying and to be someone you aren’t normally.

“You get to express yourself in different ways and have fun and meet new people while doing it.”

Josh says, “I find it fun to put yourself in someone else’s shoes and represent them on the stage,” a feeling shared by all the young Tom Sawyer cast members.

“Acting is a nice challenge.

“I like putting myself into more challenging roles and it’s really

nice making yourself fully into another character,” says Thomas.

Scout adds, “It really helps us learn about human behaviour and looking at how different people act in different situations.”

The teenagers and their fellow cast members will be demonstrating their newfound understanding of the classic story of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn on stage at Cochran Hall in Cashmere Avenue, Khandallah from 22 to 25 July and 29 to 31 July. Tickets are available through kat-theatre. org.nz.

Market Changes? YIP! Hey Everyone!

Welcome to Wellington winter! Ha! Hope you are all staying warm and have put in place some of the ‘warm up’ tips!

With the drop in temperature, we have also seen some changes to the property market.

This week I wanted to share with you some recent observations from the front-line that may help you with your property planning.

1. New Build Incentives – With major banks ASB and ANZ leading the charge with strong sub 2% rates for new builds, partnered up with rate rebates; kiwisaver benefits; lower deposit requirements; etc - the result has been a sharp jump in interest for new builds. This has naturally resulted in a drop in interest and offers for existing properties.

2. Interest Rates - The first thing you MUST remember is that, apart from the rate changing, you also have to consider the amount of ‘cash-back’ available. These can get up to around 1%, so if there is a lower rate, but no cash-back, it may work out the same. ASB is the first bank to announce an interest rate increase. They are still below 3% which is still very low – however this will further promote the benefits of the new build incentives.

3. Spatial Plan – With council pushing forward with the Spatial Plan, a lot of people are worried about tall apartments appearing in Johnsonville and rightfully so – depending where these apartments pop up, the amount of sun on properties will be affected as well as a change in the character of the neighbourhood. Already we’ve seen the first ‘double sale’ appear on Bould Street, which features two houses on a very, very good piece of land.

4. New vs Old Prices – As a result of Covid, and people needing houses NOW, the

prices of existing houses have skyrocketed in recent times. We have even sold old houses for MORE than brand new versions. These and more changes have resulted in a market where new and old houses are similarly priced. This is an artificial hike in the old house market, and a natural gap will appear as the desperation for a house immediately changes (likely when the Covid trend ends). One of two things will happen – either new house prices will skyrocket up, or existing house prices will drop as more and more buyers gravitate to new houses with much better benefits (particularly for investors).

Either way, if you are thinking of buying or selling in today’s market, we would love to sit down and go through all the changes and variables in much more detail.

Wellington celebrating two million plants Over 100 Council staff and local volunteers came together late last week armed with gumboots and shovels to celebrate planting more than 2 million native plants around the city over the last 20 years.

This milestone is the result of a team effort from thousands of Wellingtonians committed to creating a greener city for future generations.

The celebratory planting event, on a hillside in Erlestoke Reserve at Churton Park was a success, with many keen helpers on hand including Mayor Andy Foster.

The Mayor says it was a special time to chat with some of the volunteers who make it all possible, and to reflect on the day and ponder what it means for the future.

“Two million plants is a fantastic achievement and an absolute credit to all of the hours put in by volunteers and staff. It simply wouldn’t be possible without the many thousands of hands that have helped with planting over the last two decades.”

Staff planted more than 5000 native plants on the grassy hillside, including hebes, kanuka, manuka, flaxes, lemonwood and cabbage

trees.

Council’s Urban Ecology Team is committed to making conservation easy and meaningful by connecting people, knowledge and landscapes.

Anita Benbrook, Biodiversity Specialist on Native Plants, works hard behind the scenes planning and mapping all the planting sites to connect the efforts across the city. She’s condensed a lot of her knowledge down into two easily digestible restoration planting guides which can be downloaded on our website.

Anita has been with the Council for over 20 years, so she’s been part of the journey to two million plants every step of the way. She’s thrilled with the outcome so far and says the celebration doesn’t mean we’ve reached our destination yet.

“It’s incredibly rewarding to reach this point, but we’re certainly not done yet, we are building a connected urban forest. That’s what we’re here to celebrate today.”

The Council recently formed a new environmental partnership with Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington which allows the University to lease 11 hectares of land in Ohariu Valley for 33 years and undertake an annual native tree planting programme to progressively revegetate the site.

This partnership will actively engage many Wellingtonians in restoring better ecological connections between Rangituhi/ Spicer Forest and the forests on the flanks of TarikƗNƗ (Mt Kaukau), offsetting carbon and generating new research.

Feedback invited on review of activities in public places Wellington City Council is reviewing the policies that set the framework for managing trading and event activities in public places – and is inviting the public to have their say.

Johnsonville’s Hollie wins national writing competition Johnsonville resident, Hollie Corbett-Demartini, has won the 13-16 year old category of Warehouse Stationery’s national Get NZ Writing competition.

This year’s Get NZ Writing competition tasked Kiwi kids with the writing challenge of: Our alien friend wants your help to change the world. Tell us how you would do this.

Entrants were then asked to hand-write their responses in a box and submit it to their local Warehouse Stationery store to go in the chance to win a tablet.

With over 2,500 entrants across all age groups, the panel of judges had a tough job selecting the winners, but after careful consideration, they selected five – one from

each age group - with Hollie winning the 13–16 year old age-group.

Hollie’s creative piece focused on several aspects of the world that are in desperate need of attention, highlighting how spreading more love could help solve a range of issues, including injustices and environmental.

Khandallah resident receives Rotary award for community service At its recent changeover function, the Wellington North Rotary Club surprised Khandallah resident, Fiona McKenzie, with a Paul Harris Community Fellowship The award is given to someone who is not a Rotarian, but who is recognised for their commitment to the community.

For the past 17 years, Fiona has been a coordinator of community activities at the Cornerstone Resource Centre located in the Khandallah Town Hall.

Forty years ago, The Cornerstone, as it became generally known, began as an idea shared by a number of people, who identified the need for a safe, neutral space in Khandallah Village to provide help when needed and where people could meet and be together.

Premises were obtained at a favourable rental and a trust

deed was drawn up for the Cornerstone Resource Centre, which opened with support from Wellington City Council.

Thirty years after its establishment, changes were in the air, with the owners seeking to sell the building, thus leaving the concession rental in doubt.

At the same time, there was a locally-driven project to restore the historic Khandallah Town Hall.

As the growing activities of the Cornerstone were becoming constrained by the limited space, the opportunity was sought for it to become an anchor tenant in the refurbished Town Hall.

This was agreed with the Council, which then accepted the proposal with the addition that Cornerstone managed the building on behalf of the Council. This move, in February 2011, coincided with

With a higher profile, the Cornerstone is now run by a staff of three part timers, responsible to the Trust.

While being part of the team running the Town Hall, Fiona’s principal role is as a coordinator for community activities.

There she helps run various

groups and activities on a day to day basis.

These include social bridge, craft and chat, scrabble, a book group and a sit and be fit exercise group.

From time to time there are social lunches, afternoon teas and movie mornings, which allow people to gather and socialise.

Samuel Marsden Collegiate students deliver warmth Samuel Marsden Collegiate School’s student-led group ‘The Winter Project’ has once again completed collecting and delivering warm winter woollens for students and families in need in the wider Wellington area. Thanks to their partnership with local schools and businesses that also served as collection points this initiative has provided more than 2144 items to schools in the region to help their communities cope with the bitterly cold temperatures we are currently experiencing.

The Winter Project, a student-led initiative started in 2016 by five seniors, is now led by a group of Year 13 students who are mentoring five Year 11 students to carry the not-for-profit project into the future. Alongside collecting new and second-hand warm winter

clothing and bedding, the students organise and facilitate volunteers to sort and deliver the items to their final destination. “The volunteers who helped us box up items made such a difference and made sure we were able to deliver on time”, said Marsden Deputy Head Girl Araraina Takuira-Mita.

Service is one of the main values at Marsden School and the girls say they get back as much as they give. “The students and teachers at the schools where we deliver are always so kind and genuinely excited and appreciative of the coats, shoes and blankets we deliver. We are grateful for the people and schools who support this effort and give generously”, says Josie Morrison.

Group 3 is very large – approximately 200,000 people in the greater Wellington region. To make things run smoothly, we are inviting people in several stages based on risk and equity factors.

Where we are vaccinating We have a Community Vaccination Centre in central Wellington. This month we will also begin vaccinating at a number of medical practices and pharmacies.

Vaccinations are by appointment only, and no walk-in spots are available.

We have already vaccinated staff and patients of aged residential care facilities in Wellington, and many retirement villages will be offering on-site vaccination for their residents in the coming weeks.

What you should do Until you receive an invite, you do not need to do anything. When you are invited, please book your appointment at a time that works for you. If you work elsewhere in our region, such as Lower Hutt, and would prefer to be vaccinated there, please let the booking team know when you talk to them.

Capital to get 30 more Stories under the EV fast chargers stars Wellington City Council has secured almost half a million dollars in funding to roll out 30 electric vehicle (EV) fast chargers across the capital.

The new chargers will be located at Council sites across the city, part of a plan to create a network of chargers throughout the Wellington region in partnership with Hutt City Council and the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (ECCA).

Currently there are around 3000 electric vehicles in the wider Wellington region, but only 30 charge points in Wellington city – and only 14 of these are fast chargers, able to fully charge a car in under an hour, whereas slow chargers take 5-6 hours.

Wellington City Council Mayor Andy Foster says funding of $498,785 for the Charged Up Capital project is another step in the journey towards reaching the city’s goal of becoming a net carbon neutral capital by 2050.

“Around 35 per cent of Wellington city’s emissions come from road transport, so this is an opportunity to support Wellingtonians who want to transition to an EV but don’t have access to off street parking or garaging.

Expanding our charging infrastructure

will help provide reassurance for anyone wanting to transition to electric.

“We’re excited to join the Government and Hutt City Council in delivering climate action for Wellington city,” adds Mayor Foster.

It is anticipated there will be significant increased demand for charging stations in the future, driven by the likely growth in electric vehicle numbers as climate action gains pace and costs of EVs reduce.

Mayor Foster says installing EV charging stations is an important part of growing that demand and complements the public transport network, as well as supporting those who commuted out of hours or for whom travelling by bus or train wasn’t possible.

“In Wellington, electric vehicles and car share services combine with New Zealand’s highest level of walking, cycling and public transport use, made possible by our compact city urban form. We continue to be committed to climate action to achieve the city’s targets of becoming a zero carbon capital, a goal supported by the 92 per cent of Wellingtonians surveyed who prioritised climate change action.”

The twinkling of the Matariki stars in the pre-dawn sky has heralded a special celebration for young and old in Ngaio.

Circa Theatre to get a wind up Circa Theatre is about to host a Sir Roger Hall feel good play later this month.

Sir Roger Hall, New Zealand’s most successful and popular playwright has been making us laugh at ourselves for over five decades.

This latest comedy revisits not only his brilliance in playwriting, but also two beloved characters who were at the heart of his smashhit play, “Conjugal Rites,” which went on to become a popular British TV series in the 1990s.

It’s pre Covid times and boomers Barry and Gen are now enjoying retirement and, having celebrated their Golden Wedding, are facing the dilemmas that come with age - health setbacks and the sad loss of friends.

Karori trio earn Wellington contracts A trio of Karori cricketers have been offered Wellington contracts for the upcoming domestic season this summer.

Batsman Jakob Bhula, spinner Peter Younghusband and Michael Sneddon have each been offered one of 16 contracts.

Karori’s Tom Blundell is on a national contract as he prepares to replace the retired BJ Watling as the test wicket-keeper.

Funding available for new art projects The Creative Communities Scheme panel is looking for young people to make an application for their latest round of grants.

The Creative Communities Scheme (CCS) is a partnership between Wellington City Council and Creative New Zealand, and the funding is offered twice a year by a panel.

Mark Farrar, from Council’s funding team, explains that the panel is made up of a number of professionals working in different artforms themselves, representing the partners.

“The scheme supports projects that reflect the diversity of the capital’s culture and traditions, get young people participating, have broad appeal and community involvement, and encourage engagement in the arts.”

The next CCS funding round is open until 19 August 2021 We particularly want to see young people and groups who have never applied before to be taking the time to make applications, and that have a strong focus on diversity and non-traditional artforms.

Thanks to the generosity of the Irene Baker Foy Trust, Karori’s Huntleigh Home residents are able to play a variety of instruments and sing songs in their native tongue.

Music therapist Karina Auer comes every Wednesday armed with her guitar, various drums, maracas and a xylophone and a small group of residents are encouraged to beat a rhythm and belt out a song or two.

“It’s not just entertainment. The tunes take residents back to the music they grew up with and you can see the energy in the room rise and the mood lift,” explains recreation team leader Annelize Steyn.

“Karina takes the trouble to research songs that residents can’t always remember the names of. One of the residents involved began humming a song one day and Karina was able to work it out phonetically!”

As a result, ‘Ging Gang Goolie’ an oldie but a goodie originally written for boy scouts and girl guides, has joined the Huntleigh residents’ repertoire.

It’s not just popular songs that make up the playlist. Lullabies in Afrikaans, Gaelic, Irish and Welsh are also sung.

“Karina is open to all sorts of music,” says Annelize. “She usually plays the clarinet and the saxophone but brings percussion instruments so she can guide the residents and sing with them.”

Karina says she loves coming to Huntleigh Home for a music therapy session and seeing the residents ready to go.

First plastic-free Maori cemetery Taranaki WhƗnui iwi has officially declared Opau UrupƗ in Makara, Wellington as plastic free – the first MƗori cemetery to do so.

Opau UrupƗ Makara Committee co-chair, Holden Hohaia (NgƗti Maru/Taranaki WhƗnui) said he hopes the action will inspire others across the country to do the same with their urupƗ and other cemeteries.

“Declaring the urupƗ as plastic free is a no-brainer,” says Hohaia.

“This declaration means we become part of the solution to plastic pollution and the risks it poses to our environment.

“It aligns directly with our role and responsibilities of kaitiakitanga, and, to our environmental values.”

He said the inspiration to explore the possibility of plastic-free urupƗ came from the partnership project Sanctuary to Sea Kia Mouriora te Kaiwharawhara. The project is led by Wellington ecosanctuary, Zealandia Te MƗra a TƗne.

Lead Ranger of Bicultural Engagement at Zealandia, Terese McLeod (Taranaki WhƗnui) is supportive of the move to go plastic-free.

“I noticed large numbers of plastic flowers from a local cemetery turning up in the Kaiwharawhara Stream during a rubbish audit,” she said.

“This made me think about my own whƗnau urupƗ and how we might make a change for the better. As far as I’m aware, nobody else has done this yet in NZ, so I hope that it can become a growing trend that other urupƗ and cemeteries can adopt.”

The goal of the Sanctuary to Sea project is to engage the community throughout the Kaiwharawhara catchment to improve the

hauora (health) of the Kaiwharawhara awa (streams) corridor. The project partners were looking for ‘out of the box’ solutions to support this kaupapa when the idea for the plastic-free urupƗ was raised.

McLeod says that an important part of this project is working with the community over time to make the vision for a plastic free urupƗ a reality.

“This is not about plastic ‘policing’ the urupƗ, no plastic placed on graves will be removed,” she said.

“Instead, it is about encouraging behaviour change and considering other environmentally friendly ways of honouring those in urupƗ.”

Wellington City Council is a key partner in developing and maintaining the site, and is leading significant efforts to enhance the environmental outcomes in the area. Together, Taranaki WhƗnui and Wellington City Council have planted 500 plants for a shelter belt plant plan to provide cover in bad weather during tangihanga with special plants to go in at a later date, with many more to be planted in the coming years.

Open Space and Parks Manager at Wellington City Council, Myfanwy Emeny said the shared mahi at Opau UrupƗ has been very rewarding.

“We also share the same kaupapa around reducing plastic use within cemeteries. We are now encouraging natural materials such as fresh flowers and woven flax as a more environmentally friendly way to decorate graves, and we’re exploring the potential for growing wildflowers and other plants at the cemeteries that can be picked as an alternative to plastic flowers.”

Remove your clothes dryer’s lint filter, then give it a lux as well. This can significantly improve your dryer’s energy efficiency, thereby reducing its running costs.

5. Draught-proof your home: are your door hinges loose or your window latches rattly? Grab a screwdriver and tighten them up. This reduces the chance of nasty draughts blowing through your home. If that doesn’t work, buy some vinyl strips that adhere to the insides of the window frames to achieve a better seal between the window and the frame.

6. Cheapo double-glazing: you don’t have to be made of money to improve the heat retention of your windows - DIY window film, which fits across your frame and sits a little off the pane, can cost less than $10 per pane. You simply fit it to the frame to create an insulating layer of air between your room and the cold glass. Alternatively, taping bubble wrap to the window frames will achieve the same effect.

7. Light smarter: switch from your old incandescent, halogen or compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs to LEDs. They use far less energy and last much longer.

8. Check your power deal: visit Powerswitch.org.nz to see if you could be getting a better deal for power elsewhere. If you’re on a spot-based tariff, consider switching for the winter to avoid the high spot prices currently experienced on cold winter evenings.

9. Shower smarter: grab a 10L bucket, chuck it under your shower and start timing.

If it fills in less than a minute, your showerhead is a water-waster. You can snag a low-flow, energy-efficient showerhead for less than $100.

10. Revisit your childhood with a wheat bag or hot water bottle: it costs next to nothing to fill a hot water bottle or heat a wheat bag, and they’re a great way to keep the bed warm in a pinch.

1.

Layer the potatoes, carrots, onion and celery in a 5-qt. slow cooker.

Place flour in a large shallow dish.

Add stew meat; turn to coat evenly.

In a large skillet, brown meat in oil in batches. Place over vegetables.

2. In a large bowl, combine the tomatoes, broth, mustard, salt, pepper, thyme and, if desired, browning sauce. Pour over beef.

Cover and cook on low for 7-8 hours, or until the meat and vegetables are tender. If desired, sprinkle with fresh thyme before serving.

Rosco deserves to declare on his terms Ross Taylor deserves to leave international cricket on his terms.

Even the biggest fan of the 37-year-old would be hard-pressed to ignore a slight regression in the veteran’s play over the past 18 months.

However, he still offers plenty to a group of Black Caps who are thriving.

He has scored more than 18,000 international runs in all formats

since debuting as the next big thing in New Zealand cricket in 2006.

Despite the weight of runs, I doubt many meant more than the unbeaten 47 he got in the World Test Championship final last month.

The steady hand, along with captain Kane Williamson proved he still had the mental ability to grind through tough periods and put away the bad ball.

Unfairly, there was too much

chatter post-match about Taylor’s future.

The man himself wants to carry on to another 50-over World Cup which is a lofty target.

The chatter, while understandable, also took away from BJ Watling’s retirement which was a shame.

He also got a momentum building 80 against England before the Indian triumph.

Taylor does not strike me as a person who would stick around beyond his time.

Short of a couple of World Cup final outcomes, he has achieved every goal I’m sure he has ever set himself.

It also hasn’t been a smooth ride for Taylor who was dumped as captain in favour of Brendon McCullum in a move that could have turned the team culture toxic.

Johnsonville earned an element of revenge of the Wellington Axemen on Saturday.

After losing their Swindale Shield round-robin encounter, The Hawks went to Hataitai Park and won 27-13.

Coach Jason Adamson says he was delighted for the players who had stuck to the task all season, despite some tough results.

“I was happy for them, because they’ve kept working really hard.”

Jason says the team was able to “win the small moments”, something which they had struggled to achieve this season.

“We took the lead into halftime and then scored a crucial try after the break and we were away.

“We had key players return like Mark (Sutton), Oliver (Paotonu) and Bodene (Davis) who all made a difference.”

Jason praised the defensive effort.

Dale Rayner selected for Bowls NZ High Performance Squad Johnsonville Bowling Club’s Dale Rayner has been named in the Bowls New Zealand High Performance Squad.
