Jyordanna eyes new heights with basketball scholarship Continued from page 1 “I’m excited to go,” she says.

“I want to go right now but I’m sure that will change as it gets closer.”

The 6 foot two inch forward was thrust into the sport at a rep tournament after her height saw her spotted while she was playing netball.

“I didn’t really know what I was doing but we managed to finish second and that was the first time I felt I achieved something.

“I didn’t have much skill but they looked at my height and thought that would be handy.

“I wasn’t allowed to dribble the ball so I think I’ve come a long way,” Jyordanna says.

Her achievements this year include selection to the National Women's Basketball League (NWBL) for the Capital Swish and the Rongomaiwahine Maori Women’s Team who placed third at the Maori Nationals where she is representing at a level well

above her age group.

She was a member of the Under-17 Hutt Valley team that finished second at Nationals where she was also named in the tournament team.

She has achieved selection in both the New Zealand Maori Under-17 team and the New Zealand Under-17 squad.

Jyordanna completed a sterling year with selection for the Junior Tall Ferns.

She says she is expecting a more physical style of play in America and knows she will have to adapt her game to suit it.

“I’m tall for New Zealand but everyone over there will be my height or bigger so I’ll need to improve my shooting and ball handling and get used to that.”

Jyordanna says she has modelled her game on WNBA legend Elena Delle Donne because of her physicality and uncompromising style.

As for what she will miss about New Zealand.

“Family of course but also

Jyordanna says she was thankful to her family and past and present coaches for getting her to this point.

“It’s a great experience and I’m looking forward to being at Auburn.

She says she chose the univer-

sity because it has a strong Kiwi connection and she was excited to study kinesthesiology.

“I think education comes first for me,” she says.

“I want to finish with a degree and know I have given it everything on the court at the same time.”

Lower Hutt residents have provided feedback on how to implement the Government’s new requirements to enable higher and denser housing across the city, advocating for minimum standards for landscaping and a requirement for developers to contribute towards creating more appealing public areas.

The Government-mandated rules aim to increase housing supply and affordability across Lower Hutt and other main centres, by loosening current rules on development.

Hutt City Council is now considering public and Mana Whenua feedback for inclusion in a proposed District Plan change to incorporate the Government requirements. The proposed change will be open for formal submissions in August.

Key findings from 419 individuals and organisations who responded to the survey or via email include: 29% of respondents consider 1km or more to be a “walkable” distance between home, public transport,work or shops. (See note to editors) 32% of respondents thought there were areas where Council could allow housing higher than what is being introduced. Most identified the CBD and Central Hutt areas, which as transport and commercial hubs will be required by the Government to have a six-storey minimum permitted height.

21% thought there were residential areas where Council should allow more than the minimum three dwellings per section under the new rules, identifying those close to trans-

port and/or amenities, the CBD, Central Hutt and Petone. As commercial and transport hubs, these areas are already identified under the Government’s requirements for greater density than residential areas.

There was strong support (ranging 69-75%) for Council to introduce minimum standards for landscaping (up to 20% of the section needing to be grass or plants), façade glazing (up to 20% of the façade being windows) and a minimum area of outdoor space able to be viewed from inside.

82% wanted Council to include a charge to developers to make public areas more attractive.

Views were mixed on whether Boulcott, Lowry Bay and Woburn should remain zoned as low-density areas. Many respondents who otherwise opposed intensification in general nonetheless thought no suburb should be excluded or treated differently.

“It’s great to see so many locals thinking about intensification issues and willing to have their say,” said District Plan Review Sub-Committee Chair Simon Edwards.

“The government-mandated rules, including our inability to require off-street parking even in situations where it is sensible, has removed all local flexibility and made intensification something of a free-for-all.”

More housing (also known as intensification) may also be allowed in residential areas such as the suburban centres of Avalon, Eastbourne, Moera, Stokes Valley and Wainuiomata.

Gabriel Tupou standing city-wide for Hutt City Council Gabriel Tupou is standing for Hutt City Council in this year’s local government elections, contesting one of the six city-wide seats. “I will be an informed, connected and compassionate voice at the Council table for the people of Lower Hutt,” Gabriel said.

His top three priorities during his election campaign are (1) listening to residents and community groups, (2) increasing awareness of how local government works, and (3) encouraging greater voter turnout.

This is Gabriel’s second bid for Council after coming close to being elected in 2019. He was, however, successfully re-elected for a second term to the Wainuiomata Community Board.

“I have served two terms on the Community Board and more than half of that time as Chair. So I come with some experience in local government.”

Gabriel has been involved with significant projects, including representing the Lower Hutt community on the Greater Wellington Regional Council’s Whaitua Te Whanganui-Tara Committee, which made recommendations for the integrated management of land and water. He is also a member of the Project Steering Group overseeing the $8.6 million Wainuiomata Town Centre Streetscape.

Gabriel, raised in the Hutt, believes his parents and grandparents instilled a heart for serving the community in him.

“I am a son of both a Tongan migrant and Tangata Whenua (Maori descent).

“I participate in citizenship ceremonies where we present certificates to new citizens – one day, their children or grandchildren may become leaders in our city, whether that means teaching a classroom, coaching a sports team, managing a business or shaping public policy.”

Gabriel says he is ready to work as a Councillor for Lower Hutt with a strong background in voluntary service, community advocacy, and good governance.

Samoa Language Week in Wainuiomata To celebrate Samoa Language Week/Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa Barnardos Wainuiomata Early Learning Centre held an agia (family) day.

Families were invited to join their tamaiti (children) to learn about Samoan culture and experience Samoan music, dance and food.

lava lava and their tuiga (ceremonial headdress) that they made during the week and performed their favourite Samoan songs.

Before lunch, the children blessed the food with a Samoan lotu mo mea'ai (prayer for food) and then everyone enjoyed some yummy Fa'alifu Fa'I (green banana with coconut cream), Sapasui (Samoan Chop Suey),

Pai Fala (pineapple pie) and Koko alaisa (cocoa rice).

Wainuiomata High School Junior Netball went ahead on Saturday dodging the torrential weekend weather.

The Junior 1 team, coached by Leeann Beazley, had a close game against Sacred Heart College at the Hutt Valley netball courts, Taita. The top team fought hard to finish with a 22-20 win and remain unbeaten in their grade.

Junior 2 had a tough encounter against Sacred Heart College with their first loss of the season 21-9. Although disappointed with the loss, the team and supporters were pleased to dodge the wind and rain and come

out injury free.

Junior 3 continued their winning ways with a comprehensive 17-7 win against Hutt Valley High School. The team, coached by Olivia Sisley, are enjoying the season so far and are first equal in their grade.

Wainuiomata improve effort against Norths

While the scoreline did not look pretty, Wainuiomata coach Daniel Smith was much happier with the effort in the 62-14 defeat to Northern United in their Swindale Shield rugby match on Saturday.

Daniel says he questioned the team’s commitment after their disappointing loss to Avalon in the previous game, but

felt his under-manned team tried hard for the full 80 minutes.

“We showed a lot more commitment and fight,” he says.

“While Norths kept running in points, we kept our heads high and body language was still good.

“We never accepted the loss where I thought against Avalon we gave up and accepted defeat.”

Norths were able to run in nine tries with Wainuiomata scoring twice thanks to a double from

flanker Matt Jacobs.

Wainuiomata had just 20 players to pick from and three debutants were thrust into premier action.

“That’s a tough situation to be in,” Daniel says.

“We are inexperienced, this is part of the cycle for us and we know that but I’m certainly hopeful of having 22 fit players to pick from this Saturday.

Wainuiomata has two games before the Hardham Cup begins

which Daniel says the team is excited about.

“Apart from the game on Saturday, we’ve been in every game this season,” he says.

“So there’s no reason to fear any of the teams in the Hardham Cup because we know we can foot-it with them, we just haven’t got as many wins as we would like.”

Wainuiomata will travel to Evans Bay Park to take on Marist St Pats.

Only four Wainuiomata football teams were in action over the weekend due to horrendous weather conditions turning the fields across Wellington into outdoor swimming pools.

The main game saw the Premier Side team host Stop Out. Up until this point of the season, Wainui were the only side to beat Stop Out so they were looking for the double over their rivals and the top of the table side from over the hill. A win would also have been the perfect way to celebrate Andrew Olivier’s 100th game for the club as he became just the 35th member to reach this milestone. Wearing the armband for his special day, Andrew (or Twistie as he is known by the locals) led the side out to a vocal home crowd which included his family and friends, the cancellations across the club allowed for a big crowd to be in attendance. The game started off lively, but it took only 8 minutes for the visitors to show that they were here to ruin the party as they took the lead. They doubled that lead 20 minutes later in similar fashion and that’s how the first half ended,

2-0 to the visitors. Wainui came out firing in the second half and looked the most likely to score but credit where credit is due, an unbelievable strike from the visitors in the 60th minute put the game to bed as Stop Out made it 3-0. Referee Chris Bennett provided Twistie with a late present to remember the day by as he produced the skipper with a yellow card for a strong tackle. Kaelin Van Driel got his first goal for the Premier side as he slotted the chance away at the back post. While it was too little too late for the green and black, the noise and celebrations from the finish could only be described as typical Wainui – Loud and jubilant as if it was Wainui that won the game.

The game finished 3-1 but it didn’t damper the mood at Richard Prouse.

Sunday arrived and the storm returned.

This weekend the club was also meant to celebrate Gregg Watson’s 100th game in charge of senior football, however the cancellation of the Reserves meant the celebrations had to be delayed by a week.

In Wellington Four, the Roundballs were transferred from Newtown

Park to Wilton Park where they faced Wellington United in the first game of Round 2. In a thrilling and high scoring game, their unbeaten run unfortunately came to an end as they lost 4-3.

In Masters 3, the Undertakers travelled all the way to Porirua and struggled with the conditions as they fell to a 2-0 defeat.

Thinking that all games were going to be cancelled, the Wildcats got a shock as there game was still on.

No complaints from this strong and resilient group as they faced an in form Petone side in torrential rain.

The result unfortunately didn’t go in their favour as they went down 4-0 but just like they have done every week, they fought until the end and left everything out on the field.
