Insects in the spotlight in Johnsonville Hannah got to hold a weta and a couple of cockroaches too.

Hannah’s mum, Liz says she has enjoyed collecting Countdown’s insect cards and has been having fun with the App. “She’s always had a love of all animals but the insects has been something new but I think we have all learnt a lot over the past month.”

“Ideally, this programme will help encourage kids and families to learn more about and value our insects, and of course, care for them so that the next time you discover one inside the house you’ll know how to release these lovelies back into the garden,” says Ruud.

“This is a really fun and interactive way for Kiwis to learn about the insects that roam throughout Aotearoa. I want to help people appreciate our creepy, crawly friends instead of wanting to reach for the bug spray if they come anywhere near them.”

Ruud, known as New Zealand’s ‘Bug Man’ has been travelling the country promoting the role bugs play in every day life.

“We’ll be learning about the different roles insects play, known as ecosystem services, where they live and why, and

what is special or unusual about them,” he says.

Decades of cake

A viral cake

It all started with one cake and a decade later cake maker Rebecca Lake is putting the icing on her own cake to celebrate a milestone of cake making.

Ten years ago Rebecca was asked to make a cake for a birthday and it went so well she was soon asked to create another and then another and before long her cake making had taken off to the point that she had her own studio.

“I got started doing this quite by accident. I had come home from overseas and didn't have a job and was doing parties with cupcakes and theme parties, and someone asked me if I did cakes and I said yes and she was my first customer,” she says.

That first cake was for a birthday for a one-year-old and it consisted of two tiers with a teddy bear on top and cup cakes to match.

From that first cake Rebecca has gone on to make cakes for the likes of Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, Wellington mayors and a host of private and corporate clients.

“We do lots of 3d cakes and do a lot of kids birthday parties also and peoples cats and peoples

dogs.”

One cake in particular caused a sensation. Rebecca had designed a cake which was half wedding cake and half Batman cake and sent it along to a wedding show.

The creation was shared as a meme and went global with celebrities sharing it and the cake design has become well-known world wide.

It hasn't been without a few dramas, one cake wouldn't fit through the door it was too wide another was too tall to fit in the car and one wedding cake slid off its stand and into her face.

“I will never forget it, I picked up a four tier wedding cake which I had made way before I understood structure properly and as I picked it up all the butter cream icing had gone soft and all four tiers of the cake went into my face,” Rebecca says.

The wedding was due to get underway so the cake had to be stripped of its' icing, taken to the venue where the icing was reapplied and reconstructed on site in front of the guests.

Rebecca plans to celebrate the milestone with a medley of cakes later in the week proving Rebecca with the half and half batman wedding cake she created that you can have your cake and much to her surprise went viral around the globe with requests from eat it.

Ōhāriu voters are encouraged to make their voices heard during Saturday’s general election.

The electorate is currently represented

by Labour’s Greg O’Connor, who won narrowly with a margin of 1,051 – one of the smallest margins in the country.

In 2017, National won the largest share of Ōhāriu’s party votes – 45% , to Labour’s 35%.

From 1984 until 2017 the area was represented by Peter Dunne, a former Labour MP, independent, and most recently, leader of United Future until his retirement in 2017.

Work being done now and coming up includes drainage installation, pouring of the ground beams and the beginning of block work walls and electrical trenching for cables.

Karori Book Fair set The annual Karori Book Fair, which was postponed due to the Coronavirus pandemic will be held over two days next month.

The event run by the Lions Club and Rotary Club of Karori will be held on Friday November 13 from 12pm to 8pm and Saturday from 9am to 4pm at the Karori Baptist Church Hall.

Samuel Marsden Collegiate embrace cultural educator

Samuel Marsden Collegiate had veteran Maori and mainstream educator Tamsin Hanly at their staff only day on Monday, She was sharing her knowledge about Māori and Pākehā histories and Te Tiriti o Waitangi with all staff at Marsden School so that they can share with their students accurate Aotearoa history and unpack this in context with students at all year levels.

Tamsin has worked in Māori and mainstream education since 1986.

Lastly at Newton Central Primary School for 17 years as Acting Principal, a schoolwide bicultural and treaty educator, team leader, senior teacher of Māori units, Rūmaki teacher and English as a second literacy for Māori pathways.

Based on 25 years teaching and the research findings of my Masters (Honours), I began my PhD part-time to research and design a critical Curriculum Programme

Resource (CPR) for educators and BOTs to educate them about accurate Māori and Pākehā histories in order to enact their Treaty obligations more effectively.

The resources she provides as part of this are a gold mine of information and activities staff can use for their own learning and understanding of our country’s history as well as inspiring the girls at Marsden to come out with an accurate understanding of what brought us to where we are at today.

Photography to calling the shots

Corporal Jenn Harley graduated as helicopter loadmaster at RNZAF Ohakea and will be a vital element of search and rescue.

She once shot Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) helicopters with her camera but now Corporal Jenn Harley is calling the shots from her “flying office” after a decision to change careers.

The 26-year-old, graduated as a Helicopter Loadmaster at RNZAF Base Ohakea on Friday. A loadmaster is responsible for any passengers, underslung loads and rescue hoists.

However, Corporal Harley started her RNZAF career in 2017 as a photographer, often looking through the lens and capturing loadmasters working on their tasks in NH90 helicopters.

It was on one of those occasions that she decided to change her focus and join their ranks.

“Having a helicopter as an office everyday was very appealing and I also wanted a role that was challenging and engaging.”

After training on the A109 light utility helicopters she is now itching to get on with the job on the NH90 medium utility helicopters in No. 3 Squadron.

The squadron is called on to carry out aid delivery and search and rescue missions in New Zealand and around the South Pacific.

It also supports the New Zealand Army by delivering troops and equipment into combat and supports NZ Police and other government agencies.

Recently, the squadron’s NH90 helicopters and crew supported the Australian Defence Force-led response to the bushfires and also the response to the Whakaari/ White Island eruption.

Corporal Harley, a former Heretaunga College student, said one of the highlights of her training was a “mutual flight”.

“This was just myself and another student in the back and putting everything we’ve learnt into practice.”

Corporal Harley said she would recommend joining the RNZAF because of the exposure to the variety of experiences.

“You’ll meet some of the best people you’ll ever know and you’ll get to experience a range of things that a lot of people will never get.”

“Then when he pulled it out he kind of showed me and said ‘this is actually a painting’. I said, ‘is it? Give us a look’ – it was Helen Clark.”

Flood risk mapping drop-in sessions planned

Rare parasitic plant coming to the capital Wellington City Council, Zealandia and local iwi are set to bring a rare parasitic plant back to the capital.

Pua o te Rēinga/Dactylanthus taylorii is New Zealand’s only fully parasitic plant, and its elusive nature means its steady decline has gone unnoticed by many.

Experts at Otari-Wilton’s Bush have been working to bring this special plant back to Wellington for about two years.

Otari is the only public botanic garden in New Zealand dedicated solely to native plants and this exciting project demonstrates the success they are having in the field of conservation research, says Mayor Andy Foster.

“We are very proud of the amazing work done by the team at Otari. Their threatened plant research programmes are contributing to the knowledge and conservation of endangered native species, which is invaluable and crucial in our commitment to biological diversity and preservation.”

iwi will be attending the translocation of the seeds.

This is the first time all iwi will be collaborating on a single translocation, says Zealandia’s Bicultural Engagement Lead Ranger, Terese McLeod.

“Our work to return pua o te Rēinga is bringing about an historic first – where iwi across the Greater Wellington region;, Ngāti Kahungunu, Taranaki Whānui, Ngāti Toa Rangatira, Te Āti Awa ki Whakarongotai and Raukawa are collaborating collectively for the survival and advocacy of this rare and declining species.

“Pua o te Rēinga has a close relationship with pekapeka/ short-tailed bats, however due to the decline of bats, predation from possums and human collectors the plant is in serious decline,” she adds.

Otari-Wilton’s Bush and Zealandia provide habitat which have no or low mammalian predators which will help these populations to establish in Wellington. The plant plays an important role in native ecosystems and the nectar pua o te Rēinga produces is

an important food source for bats and invertebrates.

“While Zealandia will not be able to rely on bats for pollination, we will be able to explore the relationship this plant has with other native species. For example, it will likely be very appealing to the nectar-loving birds in the sanctuary, and we may even discover they have a role in pollination,” says Dr Danielle Shanahan, Director of Zealandia’s Centre for People and Nature.

Wellington City Council’s Conservation and Science Advisor Karin van der Walt says that her team has been researching how the plant germinates, its seed characteristics and its dormancy patterns, all of which have helped them to better understand the plant.

“The translocation of dactylanthus into Wellington provides another important aspect to aid in its conservation while research into seed conservation continues.

Germination efforts have been unsuccessful to date, but this has highlighted the importance of planting seed into the wild,” she says.

Wellington Water is in the process of completing a stormwater modelling programme to better understand and map flood prone areas in the Wellington region.

The main purpose of the modelling programme is to provide updated flooding information to the public, developers, planners and engineers.

This will help informed decision making to better prepare against existing flood risk and to avoid creat-

ing new risk such as building in floodplains and blocking overland flowpaths.

It will also help with making informed decisions on flood risk mitigation.

In order to validate these maps, Wellington Water will be holding four drop-in sessions so they can engage with the community to gain their knowledge and information on recent flood events to further refine the models.

Paver upgrade for Wellington Railway Station

The Wellington City Council are getting ready for the next phase of the paver renewal project around Wellington Railway Station.

They are replacing the pavers with a much coarser and skid-resistant paver and are fixing

any uneven pavers that might be a trip hazard.

The work will begin on Monday and run until May 2021 between 9am and 4pm, Monday to Friday.

There will be no impact to commuters who need to access the station.

Fulton Hogan will work on this project.

The Wellington Railway station will undergo a seven month paver upgrade starting Monday.

Enliven Positive Ageing Services is celebrating International Year of the Nurse and Midwife by recognising the hard work of all its nurses.

This year was chosen to celebrate nurses and midwives as it also marks 200 years since the birth of Florence Nightingale – who is considered to be the founder of modern nursing.

Enliven has almost 160 nurses working in its rest homes across the lower North Island in various roles, which include registered nurses, enrolled nurses, clinical nurse managers, clinical coordinators, nurse consultants and managers.

Recently, Presbyterian Support Central Chief Executive Pat Waite visited each Enliven home to personally deliver a special variety of rhododendron called ‘Registered Nurse’.

Each nurse working for Enliven has been given a keep cup as a reminder of their time with the organisation, especially to mark this special year.

Enliven has also recognised the retired nurses living in its homes across the region. They have been gifted LED lamps that light up when blown into, made to look like the one Florence

Nightingale would have used.

The Web of Time opens at Te Papa on 12 December 2020 and will run through until late 2021.

Japanese artist coming to Te Papa Award winning Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota will unveil a fully immersive installation in Te Papa’s Toi Art this summer.

The Web of Time opens on 12 December 2020 and will run through until late 2021.

Renowned for her otherworldly and intricate ‘drawings in space’, the thread installation made from 3,750 balls of black wool, will lead visitors through winding tunnels into a two-storey high artwork built in level 4 and level 5 of Toi Art. Te Papa’s Head of Art Charlotte

Davy is delighted that Chiharu Shiota’s work is being exhibited at Te Papa, and for the first time in New Zealand.

The Web of Time draws on ideas of the cosmos, human existence, and the potential for the future.

Within this work one thousand numbers are intertwined in thread, suspended in space. Shiota believes numbers act as a universal language and a shared concept of time, with the ability to define, as well as connect people.

The Web of Time is the fourth site responsive commission for Te Papa’s Threshold gallery, following Michael Parakowhai’s Détour (2018), Nike Savvas’ Finale: Bouquet (2019-2020) and Lemi Ponifaso’s MAU: House of Night and Day (2020).

Ask the Wellington City Council mowing team for tips on looking after your home lawn, and they quickly offer up the same piece of advice – don’t cut it too short.

Mowing Team Leader Gus Anderson says you should cut a maximum of “one third of the leaf” each mow.

If you cut it lower the grass can initially “bounce back” and grow more quickly, meaning you might need to mow more often.

And if you cut your grass really short it can rip it out at the root, allowing weeds to move in.

Former mowing manager Matt Beres says Kiwis traditionally tended to cut their lawns much too low.

“In New Zealand people tend to scalp their lawn to within an inch of its life.”

In terms of length for Council sites, it depends on the grade of lawn, but they generally aim for between 50mm to 120mm.

As for catching versus mulching, that comes down to personal choice and how much time you’ve got.

smothering the grass, creating diseases and making a mess,” says Gus. “A mix of catching and mulching is sometimes best catch the grass when it’s wetter and mulch when it’s dry. Again, people have their own ideas and sometimes time is of the essence.”

But then again, do you really need to mow your lawn at all?

For some Council sites, the mowing team is exploring ways of increasing biodiversity at some appropriate sites by creating meadows, Matt says.

“Rather than just cutting grass for cutting’s sake, we might be able to leave some sites for an annual cut.

“This will also allow the team to deliver better service in the more useable areas.”

Johnsonville Mall staff give back

The Johnsonville Shopping Centre management office team gave back to the Salvation Army staff and volunteers who offer their time to support our community on a daily basis.

They met up with the team at The Salvation Army Johnsonville, to treat them with some morning tea.

National Watercolour Exhibition The annual Splash exhibition is a highlight of the New Zealand Arts calendar and a not-to-be-missed event.

Two exhibitions, Splash 2020 and Ceramicus, each one an outstanding show, are combining again to present a treat for art lovers at the Academy Galleries in Wellington. This major art gallery is located in the heart of the city in the historic harbour office building at the entrance to Queens Wharf.

This year’s Splash 2020 guest is world renowned artist, Svetlana Orinko from Christchurch. Svetlana grew up in the Ukraine and inherited her artistic abilities from her father. She completed 10 years of studies at a rigorous classical old masters art education program in the Ukraine and immigrated to New Zealand with her daughter in 1992.

Svetlana has enjoyed well deserved success and a growing reputation as one of New Zealand’s top watercolour artists and a valued teacher.

She has won many awards and is known for her detailed floral compositions and skilful portraiture. Her style can be best described as Contemporary Realism. Her vibrant, masterly

paintings promise to be a highlight of the show.

The exhibition will feature over 300 paintings by professional and amateur artists from Whangarei to Invercargill.

Exhibiting artists include the top names in New Zealand watercolour, among them Adrienne Pavelka,

Svetlana Orinko, Jacky Pearson, Bernadette Parsons, Peter Coates, Wendy Masters, Brian Baxter, Richard Bolton, Alan Collins, Dianne Taylor, Sue Wild, Kimbra Taylor, Min Kim, Joy De Geus and Roger Daniell.

Visitors who would like to watch watercolours being painted are welcome to watch

Art show for Johnsonville A one day art show gets underway this weekend in Johnsonville featuring a range of artists and styles from painting to pottery.

The show will feature work by established and emerging artists from Wellington region and the Hutt Valley.

Putting on the show has been a wish for arts promoter Estelle Cainey.

Estelle says the show will be featuring work from artist,

painter and poet, Stephanie Sinclaire Lightsmith, along with acrylic, oil and ink drawing as well as ceramics, 3d media and photography.

“Artists are from Wellington and Hutt Valley.

Some are established such as Sophie Gardiner and Dan Wilkinson and others are emerging artists,” Estelle says.

“There is some wonderful colourful work from artist

Sue Larsen and there will be an array of artists work.

It is a real variety of work for folks to enjoy.”

Estelle has a love of all things art and is hoping the more people who can see an artists work the more likely they are to find a connection.

The event will commence at noon on saturday at the Johnsonville Community Centre and will finish at 5pm.

New Ruru racks for e-scooter parking in central Wellington New parking racks for escooters are being installed in busy areas around central Wellington from this week to provide spaces where scooters can be left safely out of the way of pedestrians.

Wellington City Council is installing the racks mainly to accommodate the public share e-scooters at the 10 busiest places where people start or end their rides, although people who have their own e-scooters or push scooters can also use them.

The racks are known as Ruru racks as they resemble an owl’s face.

Deputy Mayor Sarah Free says the e-scooter parking will help to keep footpaths clear for pedestrians and provide much needed space for people to park scooters responsibly.

“We know that e-scooters are well used for making short trips around the city, but the convenience has to be balanced by people being considerate as to where they leave scooters at the end of their ride.

“The new racks will give scooter riders more options for where they can park safely, and it’s good to find a solution to this contentious issue. We’ll keep an eye on how well they are used

and install more or relocate racks if there’s demand in some areas and not others.”

Designed in Wellington by Richard Hovey, and made locally by Tilley Group Ltd with support from their Rongotai neighbours Goldmark Group, the Ruru racks will provide free parking for up to 93 scooters at a range of locations including: the waterfront – Whitmore Street, Queens Wharf (by Jervois Quay) and Taranaki Street Cuba Street at Ghuznee Street Cable Street at Tory Street (near Te Papa) Courtenay Place – near Taranaki Street and Cambridge Terrace Oriental Parade – near Waitangi Park, at Freyberg Pool and the Band Rotunda.

The e-scooter companies will redistribute their scooters to the racks in the morning when they have been recharged, and encourage their customers to use the scooter parking via their hiring apps.

Councillor Tamatha Paul, Portfolio Lead for Climate Change, says the Ruru racks can also be converted to include e-charging for scooters and the Council may look at this and other e-bike charging options

5 Tips - Renovating Kitchens on a Budget!

Happy Thursday everyone! Welcome to another week of property chit chat. Thanks for your interest in our special landlord’s event based around the new RTA changes. If you missed last week’s article, get in touch and I’ll bring you up to speed with what is going on.

Last week one of my client’s got me in to give them ideas on how to renovate their property cost effectively, and it became apparent that a lot of homeowners focus far too much on how much their house sells for and completely neglect the concept of net-profit. It is important that at every step of your property journey you are making good decisions to ensure the long-term prosperity of your property. Here are my favourite 5 tips on renovating a kitchen!

1. Replace the Benchtop – Nothing instantly brings a kitchen into the modern world like a new bench-top. We’ve seen some basic kitchens in this area get new stone benchtops for around $2000+GST. Stainless steel is also a great option.

2. Paint the Cupboards – Paint technology has come an EXCEPTIONALLY long way in the last 10 years and giving your old cupboards a paint is a good option. Not only will it modernise the colour, but a new coat of gloss can make it look brand new.

3. Hardware is Key – Designer hardware is emulated by the mass market, and we are seeing some trendy designs available in the low to mid-market. Modernising the tapware, changing handles, and throwing in some funky lights and your kitchen will pop!

4. Polish Floor or Vinyl? – What I love most about the houses in this area is that most of them have timber floors. It is a quite simple and painless process to get the flooring lifted

and have beautiful sanded & polished timber floors in your kitchen. If you don’t have timber floors, give vinyl a chance. Some of the new vinyl designs look very trendy.

5. Finish the look – You’ve spent all that effort, don’t ruin it with that nasty fridge you’ve had for 25 years and doesn’t fit the space, or that cooker that only has one working element. Keep an eye on when product seasons end and nab up the ex-demo items.

All kitchen & appliance stores clear out their demo stock at the end of the line. Last years model looks perfectly fine and is a fraction of the price.

The feedback and submissions will be read, evaluated and summarised in an engagement summary report. It will be provided to the Planning for Growth website.

GARDENING THIS WEEK Preventing pests destroying fruit: By Wally Richards With the new season on hand and our deciduous fruit trees beginning to wake up; now is a good time to repeat the information on prevention of fruit destroying pests.

Apples, pears and walnuts are attacked by codlin moths and for those gardeners in more northern areas that have the guava moth: all pip fruit, stone fruit, citrus and nuts are attacked.

So let’s start with the two moths (Codlin and Guava) how do they at night find where to lay their eggs so that their baby grubs/caterpillars will have a good food source when they hatch out?

The smell of ripening fruit is how they find the ideal egg laying place.

No they don’t lay their eggs in the flowers as there is nothing there when the grubs hatch, or if there is the fruit is too small to be sufficient food for a grub to reach maturity.

Once a codlin or guava grub gets inside your fruit you are too late to do anything. What we must do is prevent the grubs from entering the fruit which is easy to achieve by regular fortnightly sprays of Wallys Super Neem Oil with Raingard added.

No need to spray the tree, just the fruit so that there is a film of Neem Oil on the fruit, protected from washing off in the rain with Raingard.

Works perfectly on all fruit treated and not being a poison, no harm to yourself as the chemical insecti-

cides can be.

But the moths have to lay their eggs to start with and to do that they have to find the fruit by smell at night.

So what if we create a smell at the tree which camouflages the smell of the fruit?

I have suggested this in previous articles by using Wallys Neem Tree Granules or Powder on the ground under the tree and by hanging little bags made out of curtain netting in the tree with Neem Granules and Powder in the bags. Hang one at each of the cardinal points.

This creates a smell barrier higher up to confuse the moths and they do not know there is a tree there with their host fruit.

Currently because of Lockdowns in India there is a very limited amount of Neem Granules and Powder available and what is left is being rationed out in 1kg pouches, till fresh stocks arrive next month.

Moth Balls were banned in NZ a couple of years ago because some kids these days think that anything round must be a lolly and moth balls are not.

One of the most used chemicals for moth balls was naphthalene and naphthalene is available as Wallys Cat Repellent in flakes, in a Govt approved container with Govt approved label and is the only naphthalene legally available, to be used as a Cat Repellent of which it is about 95% effective in

deterring cats.

Naphthalene flakes applied to a dry area where it is not rained on will slowly evaporate over several weeks keeping most cats away from that area.

But if rained on or watered on, they will disappear very quickly and have to be replaced. To protect the flakes from rain I have suggested taking 2 litre plastic milk bottles, cutting the bottom off, removing cap from other end, laying it on its side (handle up) with a stone inside to prevent blowing around and then about a table spoon of flakes inside the bottle.

So besides deterring cats you could put one or two milk bottles as described above under the fruit trees when the fruit have formed to deter both cats and moths.

Then you can make a trap for killing moths by taking a 2 litre plastic milk bottle and cutting a 5cm hole in the middle of the bottle on the wide side, half way up on each side of the bottle.

This should be hung away from the tree on a stake. Then make up the Attractant: Recipe: 1-cup Apple Cider Vinegar, 1/3-cup Dark Molasses, 1/8-teaspoon Ammonia, 6 drops of Dishwash-

ing Liquid. Add enough water to make 1-1/2 quarts of Attractant.

1/8 cup of this Attractant is placed into the bottom of each trap soon after bud break.

This attractant smells a bit like nectar from flowers which moths need for energy. They are attracted and drown preventing them from laying their eggs in your trees.

Using a trap or two plus over riding the smell of your tree’s fruit and a coating of Neem oil on the fruit you could be eating a lot of perfect fruit this year.

Al-Anon Family Groups offer hope Al-Anon Family Groups hosted a meeting in Johnsonville last week for the public to learn how to get help when affected by another’s alcoholism. The evening, hosted at the Community Centre, attracted more than 30 people who heard three speakers.

The first speaker told how being raised in an alcoholic home had lasting effects.

“My father was a secret drinker. I felt out of control. On paper my life looked good,

but when I thought about it, I realised I hadn’t felt any emotions other than anger or numbness for a long time.”

This person found hope in attending Al-Anon, “I learnt that I can be happy even though I come from a dysfunctional home.”

Al-Anon Family Groups help those affected by the problem drinking of others.

“There was a lot of anger in my home

growing up. Home was a dangerous place.

I had anxiety as a kid because I didn’t know what was going to happen.” said the second speaker. They went on to say “I started to identify with people talking about their anxiety, denial and obsession over the alcoholic. Much-awaited concert all set for Labour Day The Waikanae Music Society finally gets to present one of the most anticipated concerts of its season when the ensemble “Wilma’s Friends” appears in the Waikanae Memorial Hall on Labour Day, Monday 26 October.

Johnsonville complete preparations for new cricket season

The Johnsonville premier cricket team will begin their new season on Saturday on the back of two wins, a tie and a loss over the weekend.

The team travelled to Hawke’s Bay for a preseason twenty20 tournament.

All rounder Jeremy Benton earned the elevation to captain and produced with both bat and ball throughout the weekend.

“It was great to get four games on good grass wickets,” Johnsonville Cricket Club’s Rick Mudgway says.

The team opened their campaign with a six wicket win over a Napier Boys’ High School Invitational XI. Johnsonville bowled them out

for 84 and chased them down with plenty of overs and wickets to spare.

The second match against Napier Tech saw Johnsonville’s bowlers put under pressure.

The hosts plundered “They got out of the blocks quick and taught us a lesson.

“They showed us how to run between the wickets and they were aggressive.”

Napier made 191 for four.

Johnsonville were 33 for five but scrambled through to 135 with Zac Ringrose coming in at No 8 with a face-saving 47.

In the third game they let a win slip against East Coast Bays.

Johnsonville bowled them out for 126 but a slow start to the run chase

saw the run-rate probe too much and a tie was the best they could do thanks to Benton’s unbeaten 20 off nine balls.

In their final game, Johnsonville played Havelock North and produced their best performance of the weekend.

The eight wicket win was set up by restricting Havelock North to 118 for eight from their 20 overs.

Opener Scott Mudgway then blasted 87 not out off 51 balls including nine sixes and two fours.

Johnsonville will start their premier campaign against Hutt Districts, who were runners-up at the tournament.

That match will be played on Saturday at Alex Moore Park.

North Wellington footballers celebrated

Max Winterton celebrated his 23rd birthday with a rousing chorus of happy birthday from all 160 present at the North Wellington FC prizegiving along with two trophies awarded for his exploits in the Men’s Premier League.

Marco Lorenz was recently selected for the New Zealand Football Talent ID Under 20 camp and was also recognised by his club as the most outstanding Under 19 player for the 2020 season.

The young football talent at North Wellington was celebrated on Saturday night with the club’s annual awards night.

Club patron Peter Dunne was there as was Ohariu MP Greg O’Connor and the chair of Capital Football, Helen Mallon. It was a record attendance of 160 people at the Johnsonville Club US-bound striker Jesse Randall claimed the Central League’s Player of the Year title as well as the Players’ Player of the Year nod.

Jackson Ma nuel was named Most Dedicated Young Player of the Year.

Max Winterton did the same double for his premier team that Jesse did, while game photographer Glyn Badcock was named North Wellington Supporter of the Year.

Johnsonville bowls season underway

The Johnsonville Bowling Club’s season has roared to life with two events over the past fortnight.

The club held the Summerset Gala triples event and have also started the first of two weekend’s of qualifying play for the men’s championship singles.

With twenty entrants,

the qualifying rounds are being played over two Sundays.

This season’s competition has the added interest of the inclusion of several experienced players who have joined JBC from other clubs – so it promises to be a fascinating competition.

There were four qualifiers, Wayne Coleman, Brent Stubbins and brothers Logan and Brady Amer.

The bowling green at Johnsonville has been alive with play in October.

Ingham also earned recognition, with Olivia being named most improved women’s premier player and Nicola being named Players’ Player of the Year.

Ho-hum All Blacks leave more questions than answers The All Blacks’ 16 all draw with Australia will do nothing to ease the concerns of many about the Foster/ Cane era.

Before any analysing takes place, Reiko Ioane should be ashamed of his botched try on the stroke of halftime.

To call it a schoolboy error is an insult to schoolboys.

The Wallabies looked hungrier and more willing in most areas.

The All Blacks lacked clear think-

ing and clinical play and were lucky to escape with a draw.

Australia were accurate, and eager, sometimes overeager at the breakdown.

If the All Blacks aren’t careful, they will lose at Eden Park and the Bledisloe Cup could be on the move for the first time since 2002.

Hoskins Sotutu and Caleb Clarke must start this week.

Questions must be asked why the All Blacks did not attempt a drop

goal deep in injury time.

The midfield needs work.

Jack Goodhue was a passenger and Ioane was found out time after time.

Anton Lienert-Brown is the longterm mid-field maestro the team needs.

It was a mediocre performance, one non-Waikato people associate with new coach Ian Foster.

Poor Sam Cane does not have the public onside either, with people wanting Ardie Savea at no 7 and

Hoskins Sotutu at the back of the scrum.

Those people, myself included won’t get their wish.

I’d much rather have Sam Whitelock as captain.

It’s clear the public is divided on the current direction of the team and this was anything but a unifying performance.

The question remains can Ian Foster let his own loyalty to Waikato players and Lomu-term All Blacks

aside and bring in the guys who will be new but on the way up.

There is always a winner and a loser with any draw, a team that feels better and a team which feels worse about it.

Make no mistake, The All Blacks got lucky with a draw, they were the winners.

Call it rust, call it the first game in a while but make no mistake, The All Blacks need a lot of improvement in just seven days.

Curtain comes down on stellar football season

It’s all over bar the shouting and the men from Miramar Rangers are champions of the 2020 Central Region Football League.

Eighteen straight weeks of passionate and frenetic competition finally played out in the end and not without surprises to boot when all 5 matches were played on the same day at the same time in true top flight competition style.

As befitting a competition that had two sides competing neck and neck week after week, Miramar pipped Western Suburbs by a single goal to win the match and the league at David Farrington Park on Saturday.

The trophy returns to Miramar for the first time since 2014 thanks to a well struck goal in the upper right hand corner by Sam Mason-Smith in the early stages of the second half. Mason-Smith also had the distinction of winning the league’s golden boot award with a tally of 19 goals and one better than North Wellington’s Jesse Randall.

At the other end of the spectrum Stop Out were ultimately the team that surprised most by being relegated when the pundits were picking a Wairarapa United or possibly a Petone exit. What was particularly disheartening for the Stop Out fans was that their team travelled all the way to Napier and actually knocked off Napier City Rovers with a 3-2 win late into stoppage time.

The unthinkable then happened with Wairarapa United pulling a small army of rabbits out of the hat to demolish Waterside Karori by a stunning 6-0 margin. What

happened in Masterton remains a mystery but at the end of the day the points table confirms Stop Out’s demise with a season tally of 14 points , Petone 16, Wairarapa 16, Karori 17, Napier, 22, Lower Hutt 22, North Wellington 27, Olympic 36, Wests 43 and Miramar 46.

Petone equipped themselves well with a 3 all draw at Lower Hutt and Olympic were too good in the end with a 2-1 win over New World Newlands North Wellington at Alex Moore Park.

Norths had not a lot to be happy with and could have, should have, locked up the game at 2 all after missing a wide open goal from close range deep into the second half. Elements of the visiting supporters crowd did not display the best examples of fair play for a large part of the match and this was a great shame. Their team however played a good brand of football and their game was more controlled with some excellent passages of play that made the local side work hard.

In terms of the playoff match between the top teams in the Capital Football and Central Football federations, it was a tough encounter between New Plymouth Rangers and Wainuiomata in New Plymouth. The sides were locked up 2 all at half time but eventually Wainuiomata powered away to finish strongly for a 5-3 win. The race to replace Stop Out in the Central League will be decided on Saturday when Wainuiomata host the return leg at Richard Prouse Park.

It’s been a thrilling season to say the least and already we look forward to what 2021 has in store.
