Matt inspires students Continued from page 1 Promoting one of the latest additions to the Tokyo Olympic Games Matt is one of the Skate Ambassadors travelling the country to build support for the New Zealand Team of athletes heading to the Games next month.

He is part of the National Development Team for street skateboarding and hopes to join the Olympic team for the Paris Olympics in 2024.

His love of skateboarding started before High School after he wasn’t able to ride his bike.

“I had appendicitis and the doctor said I couldn’t ride my BMX but he didn’t say anything about my skateboard so I picked it up and I haven’t stopped, any competition I would enter and pretty much was proving my name around New Zealand.

“Word went around and people started to take notice of this boy from the valley,” Matt says.

Calling into Wainuiomata High School was a must for Matt.

“I loved High School but wanted to drop out and skate but my parents said I needed to stay which was good and I went and got a trade certificate so I could go skateboarding fulltime.”

Matt still lives in Wainuiomata, with his mum, where he attended

Pukeatua School, Wainuiomata Intermediate and Wainuiomata High School.

After finishing at High School in 2013 and still with a strong passion for skateboarding he took up a diesel apprenticeship.

During the visit he had a chance to catch up with Roy McGrath Head of Faculty at Wainuiomata High School who says Matt was part of a really talented class.

“Matt is a great Wainui kid, and was part of a really good class of students, there are kids that have come out of that class that are lawyers and accountants and primary school teachers.”

Wainuiomata’s Peter Patelesio has taken up the challenge of a new career as a funeral director and embalmer at the newly opened Tipene Funeral Home in Porirua, and may well become one of the cast of the Casketeers.

Taking on the role is a huge difference from his previous job working for Fulton Hogan in Rongatai working on the roads. “”It is a totally new thing for

me and it is a surprise but a lot of people said I would be really good for the industry because of my character and my nature, I couldn’t see it but they could,” Peter says.

As a young man Peter had toyed with the idea of getting into the industry but was not sure how to go about it.

“It was parked at the back of my mind and as I grew up I didn’t think that much more of it,” he says.

But now he has made the change

he is looking forward to doing the best he can for those who need his services.

“It will be awesome to help families through difficult times and lessen their grief and to be able to help people and make them feel better,” Peter says.

He decided to make the career change when he met Francis and Kaiora Tipene the passionate proprietors of Tipene Funerals.

“Having met them I saw how really kind they are and I loved

the aroha coming through from them and I thought I would love to be a part of it.”

Peter has lived in Wainuiomata for over 25 years and is undergoing training to take on the role, he’s a former Rugby League player from the 1980’s when he played for Randwick.

He says having the Casketeers on TV probably helps people understand the process and also gives people a better insight to what needs to happen.

Planning needs to start now and Chris is keen to hear what the community thinks.

“We believe that 80% of our donations and membership payment still come in via cheque and that many of our clients are not using online banking at present. This could have a massive impact on our charity and no doubt many other organisations with similar clients will also suffer as a consequence,” Lee says.

Not to mention that many elderly and or disabled people in New Zealand may be left out on the 1st July.

“We don’t feel there is enough support for these people to make the change to online banking for everyday needs.”

People need to be ready and able to make the switch before July.

Lower Hutt Councillor resignation Hutt Central Ward Councillor David Bassett has resgined effective immediately.

Chief executive of the local authority Jo Miller noted the resignation of Councillor Basset would require a by-election to fill the vacancy.

The first step in the by-election is to call for nominations for the vacancy.

Nominations will open on Thursday 17 June 2021 and close at 12 noon on Thursday 15 July 2021.

Voting will be by postal vote with voting papers delivered from 19 August 2021. Voting will close at 12 noon on 10 September 2021.

Greening the region By: Gerald Rillstone Planting events across the region are underway this winter, as part of a programme to green up the region by 400,000 trees.

It is an impressive feat and will not only make the places we live and play look beautiful, but the newly planted trees will also promote biodiversity, prevent soil erosion, remove greenhouse gases and improve water quality.

Councillor Penny Gaylor, Chair of Greater Wellington’s Environment Committee, says planting days come in many shapes and sizes, but all rely on the support of the community.

“This year’s ambitious goal of 400,000 trees builds on a winter planting tradition at Greater Wellington. Each year we roll up our sleeves and get stuck in planting hundreds of thousands of trees alongside mana whenua, schools, community groups, contractors and volunteers.

“Sausage sizzles and warm drinks are provided at some planting days to keep spirits up. Others are more intimate, where volun-

teers get to learn from kaitiaki and conservation experts about how to protect our native taonga,” Penny says.

Getting stuck into the planting along the Wainuiomata River this week were members of the Hutt Valley Tramping Club and Friends of Baring Head.

Tramping Club member Murray Presland was there in a cool southerly breeze to do his bit.

“It is good fun for a bunch of people who say that they enjoy their recreation in the natural environment. We don’t actually do a lot for it and so this is something we can do,” Murray says.

“The other bonus of doing this is you actually see something for your efforts, the plants are flourishing.”

The trees will allow a healthier and more resilient region take root, and future generations will reap the rewards.

“It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the scale of the climate emergency we’re faced with. We all want to be part of the solution. Getting out in the fresh air to do some planting with friends and whanau is a free and fun thing you can do that will

have huge environmental benefits not just for us and our tamariki, but for generations to come,” Penny says.

This planting season kicks off with a community event at East Harbour

Regional Park which will see volunteers planting trees on the banks of the stunning Wainuiomata River.

Dozens more events are planned throughout the region this winter, so

Nuku Ora finalist for COVID-19 Response Award Nuku Ora, formerly Sport Wellington, has recently been named as a finalist in the COVID-19 response category at the New Zealand Sport and Recreation Awards 2021.

“We know that Lockdown had a huge effect on people’s ability to get active,” Nuku Ora CEO Phil Gibbons says. “We also know that for many, finding ways to get active was an important part of their lockdown routine.”

To help people stay active during lockdown, Nuku Ora adjusted the delivery of their Green Prescription and other health and wellbeing programmes, making use of innovative and creative ways to keep

people active and moving; and distributed over $2.6m of Government response and recovery funding to more than 340 community organisations across the region.

Led by Nuku Ora, in March last year 19 organisations came together to form a COVID-19 Regional Response Group to support a connected and co-ordinated response to the pandemic and initial lockdown.

The first of its kind, this group consisted of eight Councils, three District Health Boards, five regional sport and community organisations, Regional Public Health, one funder, Sport NZ and was facilitated

by Nuku Ora. The COVID-19 Response Award is to celebrate the extraordinary and innovative achievements of organisations in the play, active recreation, and sport sector, in response to the significant disruption and hardship caused by the COVID-19 global pandemic.

Nuku ora is one of four finalists in the away, which will be decided by public vote.

The other nominees include Basketball New Zealand for their Sal’s NBL Showdown, Sport Waikato for their COVID-19 Community Sport Awards and AgeFIT for their online strength and balance

programme.

Voting is open now and closes at 11:59pm on Wednesday 16 June. The winner will be announced at the New Zealand Sport and Recreation Awards on Monday 21 June.

Chorale celebration and farewell

Hutt City Chorale is celebrating 45 years of singing and performing in Wainuiomata and the Wellington region.

It is forty-five years since the choir was first formed by John Knox, a well known Wainuiomata

resident and the choir was known for the first 42 of our 45 years as the “Wainuiomata Choir”.

For this concert, previous choir members were invited to join us and to our delight some have been able to do this.

However, not only is this concert a celebration of 45 years of the

choir singing and performing in Wainuiomata and the Wellington region but also a farewell, as from the 8th July, Hutt City Chorale will commence rehearsing in Lower Hutt at St Marks Church on Woburn Road.

The concert is on Sunday 20th June with a 3.00pm start, in St

Stephens Church Hall, 106 Main Road, Wainuiomata.

Singing will commence at 7:15.

New new Chief Executive Greater Wellington has ended its search for a new Chief Executive, with the Council appointing Nigel Corry as Chief Executive for a five-year term.

Nigel Corry will take over the reins on 15 September and will be familiar to iwi, stakeholders and community members, having served as the current Deputy Chief Executive of Greater Wellington since September 2018.

inbrief news Be fire safe this winter As the heaters come out and fireplaces are lit, Fire and Emergency encourages everyone to be fire safe during these cooler months.

National Adviser Fire Risk Management Pete Gallagher says last month, before winter even started, six people died in house fires- making it one of the worst months for fatal fires on record.

“So we really want you to make sure you and your whānau stay safe while keeping warm this winter,” he says.

“Keep anything flammable at least one metre from the heater - any closer and you risk it catching fire.”

“Don’t over-plug your multi-board.

Make sure there is no more than one heater plugged in so it doesn’t overload.”

“Make sure you dispose of ash carefully and make sure your chimney has been cleaned. Ashes stay hot for up to five days so make sure they are fully out and in a metal bucket.”

“Doing these things will reduce the likelihood of a fire in your home this winter.

“So stay toasty this winter, but do it safely.”

Football skills

Method:

1. Layer the potatoes, carrots, onion and celery in a 5-qt. slow cooker. Place flour in a large shallow dish.

Add stew meat; turn to coat evenly. In a large skillet, brown meat in oil in batches. Place over vegetables.

2. In a large bowl, combine the tomatoes, broth, mustard, salt, pepper, thyme and, if desired, browning sauce. Pour over beef. Cover and cook on low for 7-8 hours, or until the meat and vegetables are tender. If desired, sprinkle with fresh thyme before serving.

Getting kids interested in taking up football was all part of a fun filled day for all primary schools in the region at Wainuiomata High School.

Along with the fun year 12 and 13 students from the High School also played an important role as coaches and filling one of the requirements for their Sports Academy study.

Katrina Barclay whose kids play for the Wainuiomata Football Club was the organiser behind the day and took up the challenge of creating the event after she noted the school schedule at Arakura School didn’t have football on it.

Katrina decided to get organised and with a lot of help put together a morning of training with the support of the Wainuiomata Football Club, Capital Football, Ole Football Academy doing skills sessions and refereeing and members from the club helping out.

“I met with Nuku Ora and they provided support for me thinking about things to make the training accessible to all kids, like having no boots,” Katrina says.

“It’s not just for those that play it is exposure and the PE teacher from Wainuiomata High School Matt Wood has been very involved and we worked with the year 13 students

who have gone into the primary schools to do a couple of sessions to prepare them for the day.”

One of the coaches for the day Angel Patterson, a year 13 student at Wainuiomata High School, is studying Sports Academy level 3 and took on coaching the Fernlea team for the day as part of her study.

“We have done coaching with ripper rugby and before the tournament we have gone to the schools and done little coaching sessions with them,” Angel says.

“We have had people from the football come and run activities with us and we took those to the schools and they were fun little games and it makes learning a lot of fun.”

Nuku Ora’s Darren Houston, who is the healthy active learning advisor for Schools, says the big change this year is for cluster events like the one at Wainuiomata High being run by the PE students, with the philosophy around more participation and more fun.

“With the senior students coaching and referring it means the other schools can bring more students because they don’t need as many adults and there is one division for the players and no boots so more kids can participate and no finals so there can be more games,” he says.

Wainuiomata first off the blocks People in Wainuiomata will soon be able to view completed stormwater flood hazard maps of their suburb, as part of the most comprehensive flood mapping programme in Lower Hutt history.

Created by Wellington Water Ltd on behalf of Hutt City Council, the maps identify flood prone areas caused by stormwater flooding in Lower Hutt urban areas. Wainuiomata is the first area to be completed. And Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC) is now reviewing flood maps of the 22 kilometre long Wainuiomata River.

Hutt City Council Director of Environment and Sustainability Helen Oram says Lower Hutt is the most densely populated flood plain in the country with a long history of flooding. The mapping programme will help reduce the impact of flooding by giving council, government and Civil Defence a better understanding of future flood events.

“The main aim of this work is to protect lives and property,” she says.

“So to build resilience in our communities, this information is vital in showing where we can safely develop land, place infrastructure and where to focus our stormwater investments.”

The stormwater flood maps use computer modelling to depict what areas are affected by heavy rainfall draining from the hills into urban areas, from roofs, roads, footpaths and the water overland paths to drains, streams and rivers.

The draft stormwater flood maps were taken to Wainuiomata at the end of 2019 for residents to view, ask questions and share their recollections of past flooding. Around 60 people attended three open days.

This local information - which verified many flood-prone areas, blockages of drain intakes and culverts, water quality issues and the impacts of development - was

used to fine-tune the maps.

GWRC is now updating its 2012 flood hazard maps of Wainuiomata River. GWRC is urging local residents to share their knowledge of past river flooding. This information is critical in getting the maps as accurate as possible.

GWRC Flood Protection Department Manager Graeme Campbell says the river meandering course has changed in some places. GWRC will update its flood hazard maps over the next 18 months using the latest computer modelling software and more extensive data.

Wainuiomata residents can provide their recollections of flooding of the Wainuiomata River to GWRC staff and view the completed stormwater flood hazard maps at the Wainuiomata Community Hub on: -Wednesday 23 June, 3-5pm -Saturday 26 June, 11am-2pm.

Husqvarna man grabs top prize There was probably a small moment in time when Waikato man Dylan Yearbury thought his national title hopes had just flown out the window.

But, a never-say-die attitude from the Husqvarna man was enough for him to complete the task he’d set himself when forced to settle for overall runner-up at last season’s COVID-19 pandemic-shortened New Zealand Enduro Championships ... and that was to fight back and win it in 2021.

Yearbury (Husqvarna FE350) was in command after the first three of five rounds in this year’s championships, having compiled a 2-1-1 score-sheet from the events in Tokoroa and the Marlborough and Porirua/Upper Hutt regions respectively, and he arrived in the Wairarapa Region for the final two back-to-back rounds at the weekend in a confident mood.

Yearbury finished runner-up to his main title rival Tommy Buxton at round four on farmland near Masterton on Saturday and was still the favourite to go on and wrap it up on similar terrain near

Martinborough the following day.

But a high-speed crash during Sunday’s fifth and final round very nearly shattered his dreams.

“I had a huge crash and the impact of that cracked the bike’s rear sub-frame. I knew it was risky to carry on with the bike damaged like that, but I didn’t have a lot of choice,” said the 26-year-old Cambridge builder.

“The crash was in the day’s first ‘special test’ and it stunned me a bit. I struggled to get a flow going with my riding after that. I went okay, but not brilliant.”

But even when Yearbury is not at his best, he’s still a lot better than so many others in the competition and he managed to end the day at Martinborough third overall of the 65 starters, finishing behind Whanganui’s Seth Reardon and Buxton.

Fortunately for Yearbury, this was easily enough for him to get the job done and he could therefore celebrate winning his first national enduro championships outright.

Yearbury also added icing to his cake by claiming the over-301cc four-stroke class win.

With COVID putting a crimp on international travel, it’s likely we’ll see Yearbury’s name feature a little more regularly at home.

Garlic: By Wally Richards Forty five years ago garlic was not the thing it is today.

Back then I found that a clove of garlic would sprout very easily and in a small pot people were very willing to pay a dollar for it.

As garlic became a more used garnish in cooking and likely the invention of garlic bread contributed greatly to the increased use of garlic.

So for many years we happily; on or about the shortest day, popped a few garlic gloves into the soil of a fertile garden and 6 months later we would harvest big garlic bulbs with fat juicy cloves.

That was till about 3 years ago when a dreaded rust that infects the Amaryllidaceae family (onions, shallots, leeks, garlic etc appeared).

It is garlic in the onion genus Allium that is most adversely affected.

The garlic would grow ok and nice green sprouts would reach upwards to gain energy from the sun as the plant established its root system.

The bulb would start to form later on and about that time blotches of yellow would start to appear on the foliage followed by the rust postules.

As we all know, the green of the leaves is the chloroform where the photosynthesis takes place, converting sunlight to carbohydrates (energy) to aid the growth of the plant.

The more leaves and the bigger the leaves, the more energy can be gained.

When we reduce the amount of leaves we reduce the growth of the plant.

If a disease affects the leaves such as yellowing, rust, black spot etc then we have affected the growth.

In the case of garlic the plant will produce an inferior bulb much smaller that what its potential size should be.

The later in the season when the rust occurs the bigger will be the bulb size you get when you harvest.

If you are fortunate and the crop does not get the disease then you should with adequate food and moisture obtain good size bulbs and cloves.

Alas for many that is not the case and some have decided that after a couple of unsuccessful seasons to give up in despair.

Bit like the psyllid affecting tomatoes and potatoes if you have the problem and the crop is no good why bother?

Fortunately keen gardeners will battle on and try all sorts of methods to overcome the problem and when we are successful in doing so; that is our reward.

Even if only partially successful it is a great feeling of achievement, winning against all odds.

Once I realised that rust was a problem a couple or so seasons ago I went all out in trying and suggesting con-

trols such as potassium permanganate, sulphur, Wallys Liquid Copper and Vaporgard which appeared to help but not the end all to full success.

Last autumn I talked to the NZ supplier of the Australian Nutritech products and asked his advise.

I was told that some commercial growers were obtaining a degree of success by using silica rich products which are the same ones that we use to overcome the tomato psyllid problem.

I did this last season by applying the silica and boron soil drench after planting time when the green shoots appeared and again about a month later.

(When shoots are up then the clove has a root system so the silica is taken up through the roots).

With the green shoots showing the Silica Cell Strengthening spray is used with the Silica Super Spreader to drive the former into the foliage. This is to be done weekly as a spray.

I did that and was obtaining good clean foliage with no sign of rust and the bulbs were filling out when my spray program got interrupted.

After that rust attacked but having got the bulbs to a reasonable size I was happy.

The problem of course is I can only assume the silica treatments worked while I used them and that the previous season the garlic had been a disaster from much earlier on.

One of the aspects with the sprays is that the spreader is only used at 1ml to 5 litres of spray and even though it is in a 100ml bottle that is sufficient to make up 500 litres of Cell Strengthening spray for use on garlic and tomatoes, potatoes etc.

So I have decided to combine the

two sprays into a 500ml bottle of concentrate which you can use at 5mls per litre of water.

Made up it will keep in the shed out of sunlight in a trigger spray bottle so you can grab it every week and spray the tops till harvest time.

So prepared your bed for planting your garlic making sure there is ample goodness using manure, BioPhos and Wallys Ocean Solids.

Then plant your cloves, when they sprout apply the silicon and boron soil drench to the moist soil.

Mix up the combined Silicon cell Strengthening Spray that has the Silicon Super Spreader at 5ml per litre and spray the foliage weekly.

If you have the cell strengthening kit from last season that was used for tomatoes etc you already have the products for using on the garlic this season.

One month after they have sprouted apply a second application of the Silicon and Boron Soil drench. That is the last time for that product as too much boron can cause toxicity.

Keep the weekly spray treatment going and cross your fingers.

The silicon treatment makes for bigger leaves which should also help to obtain bigger cloves gaining more energy from the sun.

I am considering also using the same treatment for curly leaf in stone fruit as years ago I was selling another product from Australia that we called DE being silicon rich.

I found out later on that some gardeners had used it on their stone fruit trees in the being on the season while the leaves were developing to good results.

Selectors must spin into action To play a spinner or not to play, that is the question.

If you had said to me a month ago New Zealand would have to play a frontline spinner in the World Test Championship final against India, I would have laughed.

However, I think Ajaz Patel must now be picked which leaves Colin de Grandhomme on the outer for me.

Patel has proven he can take wickets early in a test in England and on a pitch which is predicted to turn, he could be an under the radar key to victory.

His inclusion hurts the batting stocks.

I’d have Kyle Jamieson bat at No 7 and back our top order to score the runs needed.

An argument could be made to

play de Grandhomme instead of either Jamieson or Tim Southee but leaving one of those speakers out seems unwarranted.

The continual fear is they will pick the underperforming Mitchell Santner but I don’t see room in the team for him with either bat or ball.

The key will be to take 20 Indian wickets when they will potentially be under-done in English condi-

tions.

The Black Caps should be full of confidence after beating England in the second test and claiming a rare series victory on English soil.

Yes, it was only two tests but that’s all the ICC seem to allocate us.

There has not been many times where New Zealand has had the depth to play 17 players across two tests and walk away victorious so

these are truly giddy times.

There will be many Kiwi cricket tragics pulling all-nighters over the next few days.

If you work alongside one, be patient, they’ll potentially be emotionally unstable and sleepdeprived which is never a great combination.

It will be a fascinating game, well worth the lack of sleep.

Wainuiomata cement position in Top 8 On Saturday at William Jones Park the Wainuiomata premier rugby side made it four wins on the trot with an expected victory over Johnsonville.

After a strong performance against Poneke last week to celebrate the clubs 75th centenary, the home crowd was expecting another win to celebrate prop Anthony Mamea’s 100th premier game. Wainuiomata were without star All Black Peter Umaga-Jensen on Hurricanes duty and were resting other key players.

Johnsonville therefore would have been confident of an upset against an under strength side. The first half went to plan as the local team dominated territory and possession but failed to put the visitors away early and only led 14-10 at the break through tries to John Monu and Chris Aumua. Into the second half Wainuiomata’s forwards started to make more headway and several pick and goes and quick

ball movement started to wear the dogged Johnsonville pack down which led to further tries to Jason Love, hardworking No. 8 Greg Lealofi and Anthony Mamea. With the game in the bag Wainuiomata took their foot off the pedal and a gallant Johnsonville side scored two late consolation tries to make the score a respectable 33-24 to the home team. For Wainuiomata Campbell Cowie was outstanding, Chris Aumua ran strongly and Greg Lealofi and Sam Smith stood out in the forward pack. ‘We did what we needed to do without being superb, we dominated, scored our four tries and then fell asleep in the last quarter’ said Coach Daniel Smith.

With only 3 rounds left before the Jubilee Cup, Wainuiomata will want to secure their spot in the top 8 with wins against some of the favoured teams starting with Marist St. Pats this Saturday at William Jones Park.

With the men’s central league side playing on Sunday instead of Saturday, it was a chance for our other sides to get some supporters down.

Our Reserves were against a Vic Uni side that were sitting 1 point behind them on the table. Going into the game off an impressive Monday night win, the boys were keen to carry on the momentum however it wasn’t meant to be. In a game they dominated, they failed to take their chances and ultimately paid the price losing 3-1.

Halfbaked played against their bogey team Island Bay and it was a feisty affair. A Scott Addley penalty, an own goal and a goal to Ryan Imray who played his first game for the side since a serious knee injury in 2019 saw them walk away with 3 points.

Roundballs faced newly promoted Brooklyn and it was a tight game that had 5 goals, however it was

the visitors that walked away with the win.

Three other games that were played all saw Wainui score 7 goals. Both Pacifica teams winning 7-0 and 7-1 respectively while the Fiddick’s played out an action packed game in a 7-7 thriller. The Undertakers fell to a defeat at the hands of Stokes Valley with Jamie Patmore continuing his goal scoring form and The OC’s rounded off Saturdays games with a narrow defeat away to Eastbourne.

Sunday was here and the Under 17’s started the games against Kapiti, a side they narrowly beat the week before. Just like last week, it was an entertaining battle but this time it was Kapiti that came out on top with a 3-2 win.

The Women’s side played against newly promoted Upper Hutt and thanks to a fantastic Gemma Krebs goal and one of the greatest own goals seen, it finished with a point a piece.

Finally, our Central League side

made the trip up to Napier and it was another tough day on the road as Napier comfortably won 5-0.
