New Community Hub an early Christmas present Continued from page 1.

The space, which is due to open in February next year as the Collective Community Hub, has been developed and completely funded by new generation real estate agency, Collective First National.

The company launched back in February with a vision to offer a property service that truly puts people and community first.

Walking the talk, the team has donated their time and money to numerous local charities and not for profits over the past nine months.

But for co-founders William Yip & Gareth Robins, that wasn’t enough.

“Since launching early this year, Collective has grown, and it’s all thanks to the wonderful support of our local community,” says Gareth. “As a company, our beliefs are grounded in community before commission, and community focused real estate, so it’s only natural that we focus on projects that benefit the people that support us, our community.

“Johnsonville has seen many shops and community services either close or stretched during 2020 and as a result, the cultural heart of our community has re-

ally suffered” William Yip says.

“In our work with local community groups, we’ve also seen first-hand the growing number of community organisations that need financial support, for simple things like a place to meet. We have wonderful local people who want to provide a community service but can’t afford to rent a space.”

With all this in mind, the team wanted to take away the restrictions that were preventing these organisations from doing maximum good for their community.

“With a free space to meet, run events, we hope the community will be better serviced” explains Gareth. “And being located in central Johnsonville, we anticipate it will also bring people back into the area to support our local shops and businesses.”

The new Collective Community Hub will house two large function rooms with media setups, two board meeting rooms, and a co-working space with free Wi-Fi. Rooms can be used for anything from meetings, workshops and conferences, to classes, functions and fundraisers.

“We hope the boardrooms will give local businesses somewhere they can meet up, exchange

ideas - both in person and video conference. And we hope it gives local artists a place to present their work to the community. The benefits and uses for the Collective Community Hub are truly endless.” The company hopes their business model will act as inspiration to others: “What’s best for our clients and what’s best for the community is at the centre of everything we do at Collective,” says Gareth. “We hope this inspires other local businesses.”

Johnsonville Charitable Trust supporting local Johnsonville Charitable Trust have agreed to support Wellington Free Ambulance for another three years with $25,000 per annum towards the operational costs of Johnsonville Ambulance Station.

Johnsonville Charitable Trust General Manager David Evans says the Trust is proud to support Wellington Free Ambulance and have been supporting Johnsonville Station for a number of years.

“The team at Wellington Free provide Johnsonville and the surrounding suburbs with a first-class, timely ambulance service offering security to a cross-section of people young and old,”

David says.

From the Trust’s perspective it is important to contribute to a necessary and important service and this way we can directly support the continuation of our local ambulance station.

“By providing a free service to the community it relies on donations to support their work and we consider it to be an important organisation to support,” David says.

“As we see a higher demand for housing, Johnsonville and surrounding suburbs will continue to grow. These areas will support an aging population and the continued existence of Wellington Free Ambulance in the area will prove

“We hope to be able to continue to inject funds when and where necessary to achieve maximum impact,” David says.

Te Reo name gifted to new Alex Moore Park building Wellington City Council’s Strategy & Policy Committee has unanimously approved Waiora as the official name for the Sport and Community Building at Alex Moore Park.

The name Waiora, meaning water of life, was selected following engagement with iwi partner Ngāti Toa, and the Alex Moore Park Sport and Community Inc. Council partnered with Alex Moore Park Sport and Community Inc and agreed to construct a new Sport and Community Hub Facility on the upper field at Alex Moore Park in 2018, with completion due in March 2021.

Greater Wellington published its Briefing to Incoming Minsters earlier this week, urging the Government to take action in a number of areas to help facilitate the growing role of regional councils and ease the funding burden on ratepayers.

Greater Wellington Chief Executive Greg Campbell says the briefing clearly outlines the competing expectations placed on the council.

“In short we need additional funding sources to stop an over reliance on ratepayers. Overseas jurisdictions share tax revenue with regional and local authorities through capital grants, or provide a much wider range of funding tools beyond property owners such as regional fuel taxes or congestion charges. What that could look like for our region is unknown but we would welcome the opportunity to discuss the options available to the Government”.

Work starts in Te Aro Park to improve safety As part of the Wellington City Council project to improve safety in Te Aro Park, work on installing more lighting and a CCTV camera has started.

The Te Aro Park - Assessing Harm report, a collaboration between Council and the New Zealand Police, identified safety concerns within Te Aro Park – and outlined options to address numerous issues in the area.

This additional lighting and CCTV installation is the latest action implemented since the start of December, including the canopy being removed from the toilet block, a new cleaning regime and caretaker appointed, and a stronger police presence.

“Addressing the issues in Te Aro Park has been in large part led by the re-established Night-time Economic Forum,” says Mayor Andy Foster.

“We have benefited from the concentrated effort by Council, Outreach Groups such as Take Ten, retail,

“Local businesses and residents have been frustrated by anti-social behaviour in the area but collaborating with them and other stakeholders has given us a clear plan and we’ve taken some significant actions which seem to be already making a difference.

“This latest work is all part of a coordinated approach to return this popular park to the people.”

Work is estimated to take up to five days weather permitting, between the

hours of 8AM – 6PM. Pedestrian and traffic management plans are in place, so the public is asked to follow directions from contractors and signage.

The work involves excavation of a hole for the pole, trenching and laying power cables, installing lighting and a camera.

“This activity may cause some temporary disruption in the area but the long-term gains will be a welcome change to a site which has encountered problematic behaviour from a small group for some time now,” says Councillor Fitzsimons.

“Adaptations to bus shelters, tree trimming, more lighting, and some events and activities are also planned, and Take 10 has adapted their service delivery to focus on the larger area too.”

Christmas tradition continues

For the past 36 years the Johnsonville Community Trust has held its popular Christmas Dinner for Seniors and this week the tradition continued.

The event is so popular it is held over four sittings of 50 at Johnsonville's The Inn-Keeper.

A traditional Christmas menu was on offer and Santa made his entrance in his suit only this time with shorts rather than long trousers.

Deidre Evans has been part of organising the event ever since it's inception 36 years ago and continues to enjoy it.

“It originally started out at the Burma Lodge which is where the Malvina Major Retirement Village is now and we always advertise in the paper and it is something that they look out for and look forward to each year,” Deidre says.

Community Trust Board member Graeme Sawyer says the Christmas dinner is the one constant thing the Trust does each year and it is one of the things that is looked forward to the most at the end of the year by senior citizens.

“It would be nice to have it all in one place at one time but there isn't anywhere big enough for us to do that,” he says.

Caroline goes extra mile for teaching award

Samuel Marsden Collegiate Director of International Students and German teacher, Caroline Robertson has been awarded one of only six New Zealand National Excellence in Teaching Awards for 2020.

The recipients - which range from beginner teachers to long-standing principals – were announced virtually, rather than during a physical ceremony, for the first time in the Awards’ 26-year history.

NEiTA chairman and convenor of judges Allen Blewitt said each of this year’s winners have demonstrated, in this year of a pandemic, that student and teacher welfare is at least as important as educational outcomes.

“Judges placed a high weight on how educators were able to meet students’ heightened socio-emotional needs. Lockdown and school closures presented risks of isolation for many youths, yet technology also provided powerful communication tools that allowed some students to thrive personally, socially and in learning,” says Mr Blewitt.

EYE ON CRIME In Johnsonville a grey Holden Commodore saloon was delivered by the owner to an upholsterer in Dominion Park Street to have some work done. On arrival he locked the door, handed the key to the upholsterer and told the man where he had parked the car in the driveway.

Later he was passing the place where he had left the car and it was not there. The upholsterer had not seen or heard anything out of the ordinary.

It is now listed by Police as stolen.

The construction of a new sports and community hub at Alex Moore Park attracted burglars who stole two

brazing kits and a drill.

In Newlands a grey Porsche stationwagon left parked and locked in Salford Street was found next morning propped up on pieces of wood and all four wheels missing.

A blue Mazda Demio hatchback was stolen from Newlands Road. The vehicle has since been recovered from Kaituna Street, the engine had been left running. Police are investigating the activity of a male who is taking mail from a neighbour’s letter box and setting fire to it in other boxes.

In Churton Park a new housing development in Atherton Terrace is

attracting thieves. The latest incident is 510 roofing tiles and 3 rolls of roofing paper. All thefts took place during a week night. A white Suzuki Swift hatchback lost its registration plates while parked in Atamira Close during the evening.

In Grenada Village a house in Mark Avenue was burgled. Access was via a child’s bedroom window which was pulled open. A Macbook laptop and an Xbox 1 were stolen.

In Karori two vehicles parked in the driveway of a house in Nottingham Street, both unlocked, were entered and searched. A gym bag

and items of ladies clothing were stolen. A white Toyota Corolla saloon parked overnight in Ranelagh Street was broken into. The left rear quarterlight window was smashed to gain access. The vehicle was searched but nothing taken. A similar situation took place close by in Ranelagh Street when a silver Toyota Starlet hatchback also had a left quarterlight smashed and the vehicle searched but nothing stolen. In Chamberlain Road the owner arrived home to find his brown Nissan Micra had been broken into and an attempt had been made to steal it. The attempt was abandoned

but the car suffered a smashed rear window. Another car, a white Toyota Corolla Hatchback parked overnight in Sunshine Avenue, was entered and the ignition tampered with. The car refused to start.

In Northland a black Holden HSV utility parked overnight in Pembroke Road had it’s radar detector stolen.

In Wadestown a house in Weld Street was burgled. The point of entry was a jemmied bedroom window.

The offender seems to have ignored the contents of a jewellery box but was pleased to take foreign currency from a bed side cabinet.

Respite care gives family carers a chance to take a break or go on holiday, while their loved ones stay with Enliven.

Planning the key for health over holiday period Hutt Valley and Capital & Coast DHBs are encouraging people to plan ahead and take care of themselves to ensure they have a fun and healthy holiday season.

“During the holiday season, GPs and pharmacies will have different operating hours, so it is very important for people who require regular medications to renew and fill any prescriptions they will need in the coming weeks,” said HVDHB Chief Medical Officer Sisira Jayathissa.

“This is especially important if people are planning to travel during the summer break and will not be close to their regular – or, depending on where people are travelling, any – GPs or pharmacies. People who are not travelling should take note of their GP and pharmacy’s holiday hours to ensure they can access help and support if they need it.”

Both the Hutt and Wellington emergency departments are preparing for the holiday season. Being sun-smart, drinking respon-

sibly, following food safety guidelines, practicing good hand hygiene, and staying hydrated are all good tips to help people avoid the need for a trip to ED. “We ask people to please remember that ED is for emergencies only and that people who do not need emergency care should see their GP in the first instance,” said CCDHB Chief Medical Officer John Tait.

“A GP or pharmacist will be able to assist with non-emergency ailments such as hay fever, mild stomach bugs, coughs and colds. Anyone presenting to ED who does not require emergency care will likely face longer than usual wait times or be referred to their GP.” People can also contact Healthline (0800 611 116) for free medical advice and, in an emergency, should dial 111.

COVID-19 testing will also remain available at the CBACS listed on the Hutt Valley DHB and Capital & Coast DHB websites.

Wellingtonians are being urged to plan ahead when it comes to their health over the holiday period.

Christmas coming to Old Government Buildings With 22 chimneys to choose from, even Santa Claus will be impressed with Old Government Buildings in Wellington as the venue for a new heritage Christmas market from tomorrow through until Sunday.

The country’s largest wooden building, completed in 1876, is managed by Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga. This year it will host its first Ngā Rama Wherikoriko Pō me Te Mākete Kirihimete Night Lights and Christmas Market to celebrate the creative talents of the community. Visitors to the market will experience a Christmas wonderland in magical lights, with traditional Christmas carols, a twilight market with food and goods stalls – all set against a stunning heritage backdrop.

The market will have a real family focus and run from 5pm to 10pm.

Shane McAlister from, The Ukulele Institute will MC the show, and perform along with a team of other talented artists, including, Orpheus Choir Wellington performing on Sunday.

“There’s plenty of open space in the front courtyard and lawn at Old Government Buildings where kids – and adults – can run around

Wellington's Sri Lankan School has celebrated it's latest milestone three decades on from its inception in 1990 and is the oldest Sinhala language school in New Zealand.

In 1990 the school started Sinhala Classes in Bachelor Street Newlands at what is now the community centre supported by large number of families and later moved to Oswald Church Hall Newlands.

Gamin Settinayake a management committee member has been with the school since its inception 30 years ago and is proud of its achievement.

“As part of the celebration we had a prize

giving,” he says.

The school was originally established by volunteer group of parents he says. Fortunately there were a few families who were interested in starting Sinhalese language and Buddhism lessons in the region.

Lessons were set up for children and young adults of the Sri Lankan community in Wellington and the school grew from there.

As the school celebrates its 30th year Gamin pays tribute to the contribution the people of the Sri Lankan community have made.

“The key to our success rest in people like you, who embody the spirit of greatness by saying yes I can and so can you.”

Helping others drives army medic to succeed A fascination with the human body and a desire to help others were the drivers behind Wellington-based Private Alafaga Lagaaia joining the New Zealand Army as a medic.

He has just completed two-and-a-half years of training and study at Defence Health School based at Burnham Military Camp.

Private Lagaaia, 25, from Wellington, decided to because “I love helping others and I am fascinated by the intricacies of the human body”.

“I didn’t want to be a nurse or paramedic as I wanted to do something that was both trauma and primary health care,” he said.

It was difficult to pinpoint his favourite part of the course.

“I’d say my highlights are all the friends I made at Defence Health School and the times I got to spend with them.

“While there were challenges, I found that making scheduled breaks and sticking to routines helped.”

Private Lagaaia said he was “very much looking forward to finally starting my job as a fully competent medic” and was looking forward to the future.

He said if people were thinking about joining to “just give it a go”.

“It’s a privilege to work for the New Zealand Defence Force and a once-in-

a-lifetime opportunity that doesn’t get offered to many people.

“I understand that it isn’t a lifestyle for everybody but you won’t know until you try.”

New Zealand Defence Force medics train in a tri-service environment at Defence Health School. The training takes two-and-a-half years and is a mixture of theory and practical based.

They also experience on the job training at Health Centres across Defence Force camps, ships and bases around New Zealand. On graduating, medics are deployable and able to operate interdependently within Defence Medical Treatment Protocols.

GARDENING THIS WEEK Psyllids: By Wally Richards Eugenia Psyllids are sapsuckers that cause the leaves of Eugenia and Syzygium species (Lillipillies) to curl up and bubble. The damage is mainly aesthetic. However severe infestations can cause major problems, though they usually occur when the plant is already stressed, often due to a lack of water.

They prefer mild temperatures so are less prevalent in the heat of summer and cold winters. Psyllid nymphs look like immature soft scale or whitefly nymphs.

Unlike whiteflies, when disturbed, they move quite readily. They are flat and green with a fringe of short spines around the edge. The immatures go through five instars in as little as 13 days depending on temperature.

Psyllids, also known as plant lice, are tiny, sap-sucking insects with very host-specific feeding preferences. Most species of psyllids will feed exclusively on a single type of plant, though some may expand their horizons to closely-related family members. There are over 100 species, ranging in size from 1/10 to 1/5 inch ( .254 to .508 cm.) long.

Like other sap-feeders, psyllids penetrate plant tissues, tapping into transport tissues and siphoning off part of the nutrient-laden liquids running through them. As they feed, psyllids produce honeydew, a sweet, sticky substance that may attract ants or mold colonies (Black Sooty Mold). However, most species are

not harmful to their host plants in moderate numbers.

Damaged plants may show a loss of vigour, or terminals may be distorted, discoloured or even die back.

A few species may cause defoliation or gall formation on leaves and buds. Young, tender growth is most often targeted. Some of the most serious psyllid problems occur on tomatoes and potatoes – psyllids on established landscape trees rarely cause anything more than aesthetic damage.

Treatment for Psyllids is weekly sprays of Wallys Super Neem oil with Wallys Super Pyrethrum added which will kill most psyllids.

Don’t try to prune psyllids out, they’re very mobile and will just jump away. Make sure that psyllids are still feeding on your plants before you attempt spray treatment.

If you carefully monitor your plants daily, you’ll know if these pests are still active.

The adults are small sap sucking insects about 2-4mm long (see picture). After mating, the female psyllid inserts yellow oval shaped egg into the edge of the new leaves.

Small nymphs hatch from the eggs and move to the newly expanding leaves, where they feed and develop in pimple or cup shaped pit or gall which is formed by the plant’s response to the psyllids feeding.

Excessive pit formation creates severely distorted or blistered leaves, leaving shoots to appear stunted.

Nymphs produce excrement in the form of tiny white pellets, some of which collects on foliage and becomes blackened from sooty mold growth.

When mature, the nymphs transform into winged adults.

Not having the problem myself except on tomatoes and potatoes I was under the impression that psyllids on Eugenia and Lilly Pilly (Syzygium smithii ) were like leaf miners and entered the leaves causing the dimples (but I see now) they are just on the leaf as any sap sucking pest.

A problem is the sight of the damage done to the leaves making it like the damage is continually occurring even when it is not.

Spraying Wallys Super Neem Oil with Wallys Super Pyrethrum late in the day before sunset when the sun is off the plants is the only time to do so as that prevents any leaf damage from the oil in sunlight.

The pyrethrum is quickly broken down by sunlight and by using late in the day it will be effective all night.

Also on cloudy days, do not be fooled that it is ok to spray the products as the UV is more intensive than on cloud less days and the burning of leaves, buds and flowers may occur.

Also first thing in the morning is not a good time either as you are going into a rising sun and possible damage.

For the tomato psyllid that attacks

Eugenia Psyllids infestations can cause major problems.

tomatoes, potatoes, tamarillos, chili, capsicum, okra and pepinos my proven treatment of the Cell Strengthening products works a treat preventing them from feeding and thus no nymph will ever become an adult.

This treatment program should be started at planting time as I do not know how effective it is on fully mature plant in toughening the cells.

It may help with control of other psyllids on ornamentals and would like to hear if anyone uses it for that purpose and the results.

As far as I am aware it is only the tomato psyllid that injects a toxin into the host plant while feeding thus causing the ultimate death of the tomato plant and fellow host plants such as the potatoes.

You know you have a psyllid problem if potatoes you grow end up with only marble sized new potatoes or if the potatoes do reach a good size before they are attacked then they will have the dark rings inside them. They then are unsuitable for eating because of the taste.

HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE (HYPERTENSION) When you think of blood pressure, think of water in a hosepipe. A certain amount of pressure is required to get water from a hosepipe so in the same way it’s important for us to have blood pressure so that blood can be circulated around our body.

The first published measurement of blood pressure was made in the 18th century, although it wasn’t until about a hundred years later that it was suggested that high blood pressure could be the cause of disease.

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension may eventually cause health problems such as heart disease, stroke, heart failure and kidney failure.

During the course of the day our blood pressure goes up and down depending on a number of things, including what we are doing, how busy or how stressed we are, our physical activity and also the amount of caffeine, alcohol and tobacco being taken.

Therefore when measuring blood pressure it means that several readings may need to be taken.

People are considered to

early-stage hypertension may experience dull headaches, dizzy spells or nosebleeds.

However these symptoms generally don’t occur until hypertension has reached an advanced stage. The only way a person can find out if their blood pressure is high is by having it tested regularly.

For 90-95% of adults with high blood pressure, the cause is not known and high blood pressure tends to gradually develop over many years.

Some people are at higher risk of high blood pressure because of their age, their race and their family history, all risk factors which cannot be changed. However there are other risk factors which can be changed and these include being overweight, doing very little exercise, smoking, alcohol consumption, salt intake and stress.

High blood pressure can’t be cured, but it can be controlled.

For all of us this means a healthy lifestyle and for some it also means taking medicines as well.

Blood pressure should be measured at least once a year if you are over 40 years of age, or more often if you already have high blood pressure.

When your blood pressure is measured two readings will be obtained. If the lower of these two readings (the diastolic pressure) is greater than 90, then treatment may be recommended.

Clinical Black Caps prove their class There’s little doubt in my mind, this is the pinnacle era of New Zealand test cricket.

Former test opener, Mark Richardson said last week this 2020 Black Caps team would beat the 1980s version of the team led by Sir Richard Hadlee and Martin Crowe.

Take childhood nostalgia or a recency bias out of it and facts remain that Kane Williamson’s current crop is a better all around team from one through 11.

Never has New Zealand had four genuinely world class quick bowlers in the same team like

they do in Trent Boult, Tim Southee, Neil Wagner and the youthful Kyle Jamieson.

Sure, the 1980s had Hadlee and Chatfield but beyond that, the calibre diminished.

The hapless West Indies, got no freebies in this test series.

Every over, they had a genuine wicket-taker.

This West Indies team, to be fair, can’t do the basics right and haven’t provided much competition.

They can’t catch, their ground fielding is lethargic, too few of their batsmen showed any appli-

cation in Kiwi conditions and the bowlers haven’t been able to apply pressure for long enough.

With all that said, the depth of the current Black Caps team is to be admired.

consistent New Zealand XI ever and I can’t imagine there is much argument against it.

If you were a child of the 80s then you’ll likely have a soft-spot for the players of the Hadlee era but if you look at the statistics, it is clear that the 2020 team is superior as an entire entity.

The success of the 80s goes to prove just how good Hadlee was.

Despite having limited talent around him, he provided the backbone for many great test victories while undoubtedly raising the game of those players around him.

Two double-header victories over Karori have allowed Johnsonville to control their own fate in the premier oneday cricket competition.

A win this Saturday over a Upper Hutt will see Johnsonville make the final on January 11.

Johnsonville’s bowlers dominated the home and away double-header against Karori, but for the first time this season, the batsmen also fronted in the second fixture to send a warning to the rest of the competition.

Johnsonville were able to defend 147 on Saturday, bowling Karori out for just 79 on the back of Zac Ringrose’s five for 29.

The momentum continued into the Sunday contest.

Johnsonville’s top-order firing to post 280 for six from their 50 overs.

Devan Vishvaka top-scored with 67, while Hareen Silva added 60 and captain Rakitha Weerasundara ended a lean run of scores with a handy 60.

Karori never threatened in the run chase, and were eventually bowled out for 99.

Three wickets from Ringrose and two each from Josh Mann and Jeremy Benton did the damage.

The win moves Johnsonville to third, one point outside a finals berth heading into the final round.

Either they or Upper Hutt will challenge Taita in the final.

In other matches Onslow College split their two games against Hutt Districts.

Hutt Districts won the first contest by seven wickets before Onslow won the Sunday game by three wickets on the back of Tim Robinson’s 117 which helped the school team get to their target of 240.

Taita won both fixtures against Upper Hutt to ensure their place in the decider.

Rakitha says he was thrilled to see a complete performance out of his team on Sunday.

“The whole weekend went really well and we needed those two bonus point wins and to get them was great.

“The top-order really got It going for us on Sunday and it was good to show what we are capable of.

“We have a job to do this weekend and that’s what we immediately spoke about on Sunday.”

The modern day Black Caps can dismantle a team, particularly in home conditions, in many different ways.

If plan A fails, it feels like Plans B, C and D are not far away and they are likely to be successful.

This era cannot and will not last forever, we don’t have the player base capable of doing it.

However, I also think there is more yet to come from everyone in the group.

The success window is closing, but there’s clearly more great performances to look forward to in the coming years.

The Johnsonville Rugby Football Club’s Academy continues to go from strength-to-strength in its second year.

Coordinator Joe Gates says it is about giving young players an option and pathway after the season finishes.”

“We want to look after our local players and the ones coming out of college.

“Most of them come out and have nowhere to go once the season finishes so we give them somewhere to improve their skills and become better people.

“We’ve had kids between 14 and 21 attend and even some premier players as well.

“We’ve run different workshops as well like mental health and nutrition as well as rugby skills and drills.”

After a three-week Christmas break, many of the academy members will start preseason training with the senior players.

“We, along with the Wellington Rugby Union, want to build better players and give them more opportunities coming out of school.

“There’s plenty of talented kids, it’s just us trying keep hold of them, that’s the main thing,” Joe says.

The Johnsonville Rugby Academy continues to go from strength-to-strength.
