By: Gerald Rillstone Bursting at the seams with donations Wainuiomata’s Koha shed is to move to a new location in a classroom at the old intermediate school.

Koha Shed’s Jo Bryant says it will be great to have double the space plus a sorting room and no stairs.

“Wearegoingtoanewspotupthroughtheold tennis courts. We will be in behind the Men’s

Shed where the pottery room was,” she says.

“We still won’t be taking furniture but we will be able to put more on display.”

Leading up to Christmas Jo says they are running low on kitchenware and would love to see donations of pots and cutlery.

“People are looking for gifts and presents at the moment so if we can get things that look near new they will do well for presents,” Jo says.

With an increase in anti-vaccination protests across the motu, Ngāti Toa request that anti-vaccination and anti-mandate protesters cease the use of Ka Mate at their protests immediately.

“Ngati Toa has been proactive in the protection of our whānau against COVID-19 with our Ora Toa Health Services being a major provider of COVID-19 vaccinations across our rohe,” Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira Chief Executive Officer Helmut Modlik says.

HCC gets accreditation By: Gerald Rillstone As Living Wage Week kicked off, Hutt City Council is proud to announce it has gained Living Wage accreditation, joining a growing list of 300 accredited Living Wage employers across New Zealand.

Hutt City Council is just the third Council in New Zealand to gain Living Wage accreditation status.

Accreditation is the culmination of a three-year journey which began in 2018 when Council resolved to pay the Living Wage to all directly employed staff.

Since then Hutt City Council has been working hard to ensure all contractors are paying at least the Living Wage to their workers. That means those that repair the roads, clean the streets, and collect rubbish and recycling are paid at least $22.75 an hour.

“These are the workers who have kept our city safe, our spaces clean, and our city running through COVID over the last year and a half,” Mayor Campbell Barry says.

“This is about ensuring that all our workers are fairly paid for the work they do and that Council leads the way in lifting wages and living standards

across our city. It’s the right thing to do, for our people, their families and for our community and is a significant step towards ensuring people can live with dignity and enabling a city where people can thrive”.

Council Chief Executive Jo Miller says achieving Living Wage accreditation is a milestone for the organisation, staff and the contractors who provide services on behalf of Council to the Lower Hutt community. “The Living Wage paid to our staff and contractors flows through to our local economy so its good for business as well and helps to drive up the standard of

New research from the University of Auckland highlights how comfort eating may surge during pandemic lockdowns in New Zealand.

About 76 percent of respondents to the “Covid Kai Survey” say they chose “comforting” recipes during lockdown, up from 59 percent pre-lockdown.

The research is based on 2,997 responses to an online survey during last year’s lockdown. Overall, the study, just published in the journal Nutrients, showed less healthy dietary patterns for the majority who selected “comforting” recipes than for the minority who didn’t.

The study is a snapshot but doesn’t match the New Zealand population, because respondents were predominantly university-educated Pākeha/ European women, with Māori and Pacific people under-represented.

Parking on footpaths Creative parking practices will soon be a thing of the past as Wellington City Council prepares to stamp out city-wide footpath parking, reduce transport emissions and make streets more accessible for all Wellingtonians.

From 1 February 2022 any vehicle parked illegally on a footpath

may be ticketed. Between now and February, parking officers will remind drivers that parking on footpaths is not permitted, and continue to issue infringements in situations where a vehicle is fully obstructing a footpath or when a vehicle totally obstructs pedestrian access.

Low-paid government workers win Living Wage Living Wage Movement Aotearoa NZ has welcomed the Government’s announcement that from 1 December the lowest paid workers in the core public service will be paid a minimum of the New Zealand Living Wage rate of $22.75.

Government has directed core public service departments and agencies to ensure that their contract tenders are negotiated on

the basis of the Living Wage and contracted cleaners, caterers, and security guards are paid the Living Wage.

The Living Wage Movement is also hugely encouraged that Government has signalled that this announcement is about modelling changes in the wider economy and promoting decent standards of living for all workers.

Snapper on Rail Pilot launched Rail commuters in Wellington got their first taste of electronic ticketing today with the launch of Metlink’s Snapper on Rail Pilot on the Johnsonville Line.

Over the next 12 months, passengers on the line will be able to pay their fares using a Snapper card at terminals installed in stations.

The pilot is an important step towards the National Ticketing Solution, a standardised way of paying for travel on public transport across the country.

Metlink General Manager Scott Gallacher said the pilot represented the culmination of work to improve the customer experience.

“Our customers want contactless payment for train passage, like they have for buses,” he says.

“We expect the pilot will show that an elegant, electronic solution like Snapper can be expanded to all trains and ferries across our network.”

Snapper CEO Miki Szikszai, who demonstrated the terminal during the launch says it signified progress towards achieving his company’s vision for Wellington.

“Wellingtonians have been telling us for some time that they want the high-quality and convenient customer experience of Snapper to pay for their rail journeys. We are delighted to deliver this experience with our partners at Metlink and Transdev, and look forward to receiving customer feedback during the pilot.”

says the pilot was the product of a common goal and collaboration between the companies and Metlink.

“We’re excited by this step towards integrated ticketing, and we’re committed to working together to make it a success,” Pollock said.

Huma n-induced cl imate change is affecting our food, livelihoods, security and our very existence. The Paris Agreement aims to keep temperature rise this century well below 2ºC and drive efforts to limit the increase to 1.5ºC. Scientists tell us we have a critical window – less than a decade – to act to prevent climate events that may be beyond civilisation’s capacity to adapt. The urgent response needed is not being matched by action.

“Department of Corrections data released under OIA shows the number of medium to high-risk offenders who have been given a community-based ‘intensive supervision’ sentence has almost doubled in just the past four years,” Darroch Ball co-leader of Sensible Sentencing Trust says.

“The data shows in the second quarter of 2010 3,175 offenders were sentenced to intensive supervision with this number remaining relatively constant through to 2017.”

“However, the number started ballooning from 2017 where the second quarter of 2021 had more than 6600 offenders sentenced to intensive supervision – almost twice that of just four years earlier.”

“That says only one of two things – that there have been twice the number of medium to high-risk offenders committing crimes, or most likely, that the courts are now opting to put those offenders back into our community instead of into prison.”

“What is most telling is the fact that there has been a corresponding drop in the prison population as a focus for the government over that same exact time period – which cannot be a coincidence.”

“The fact that corrections’ community monitoring workload has doubled over just the past four years is concerning given their already stretched workforce being able to monitor all of these offenders.”

“Questions need to be asked about why this has occurred and where in the decision-making process it has changed so dramatically over the past four years,” says Mr Ball.

“It is clear that our communities have become less safe as a consequence of favouring putting offender s back on our stre et s .”

What’s Cooking... in Veggie Tostadas with Black Beans and Easy Guacamole Ingredients:

Method:

s 2 ripe peeled avocados, coarsely mashed s 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice s ½ teaspoon salt s 2 teaspoons olive oil s 1 large garlic clove, minced s ½ Cup organic vegetable broth s 2 (15.5-ounce) cans black beans, rinsed and drained s 6 (6-inch) tostada shells, toasted s 3 ounces shredded Monterey Jack cheese (about 3/4 cup) s 1½ cups shredded lettuce s ¾ cup Fresh Salsa

1. Combine avocado, lime juice, and salt in a medium bowl. Cover surface of guacamole with plastic wrap.

2. Heat a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add oil; swirl to coat. Add garlic; cook 1 minute. Stir in vegetable broth and beans. Reduce heat to mediumlow; cover and cook 5 minutes or until thoroughly heated. Remove pan from heat; mash beans to desired consistency.

3. Spread about 1/4 cup bean mixture on each tostada shell. Top each with 2 tablespoons cheese, about 1/3 cup guacamole, 1/4 cup lettuce, and 2 tablespoons Fresh Salsa. Serve immediately.

4. Tip: You can make things even easier on yourself by purchasing store-bought salsa and guacamole if you can’t find ripe avocados.

The Heart Foundation is calling for New Zealanders to show their big hearts by volunteering for its single most important fundraising campaign of the year on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 February 2022.

With the 2021 street collection cancelled due to Covid-19, the Heart Foundation is determined to continue fundraising for life-saving heart research and other vital support services.

“Improvements in management of conditions such as heart failure, heart attacks and heart rhythm disorders are examples of some of the advances we’ve made to improve heart health outcomes for New Zealanders, made possible through generous public donations,” Heart Foundation Medical Director Dr Gerry Devlin says.

“We want to continue these incredible advances and enable our researchers, innovators, doctors and nurses to keep shifting the dial to improve heart health for New Zealanders and their families.

“This is why our Big Heart Appeal is so important. Our volunteers around the country make a huge difference to our ability to raise vital funds and transform the heart health of

New Zealanders and save lives.”

A boy with a big heart By: Gerald Rillstone Giving to the community and helping others has seen ten-year-old Trey-Zell Marino build a small online business selling a range of products he makes himself.

From masks to scrunchies, bandanas, cellphone pillows and more all from recycled materials and more, recently lip balms and face scrubs with the profits all going back into the community to a wide range of charities and people in need.

It all started with encouragement from his mum Kaylah Marino Trey went looking for constructive videos on YouTube and was captivated by ones that taught him to sew.

That was two years ago and with the help of his mum he got a sewing machine and began making an array of things to sell first at the Wainuiomata Saturday market and then online.

“He enjoyed doing it and he didn’t want the money so we thought of donating it,” Kaylah says.

He keeps track of his donations and so far he has given to Mount Wellington Breast Cancer, his MMA Club in Wel-

lington, The Heart Foundation, local whanau, Kids Cancer, Arakura School, Saint Johns Division.

It is all about giving for Trey and Kaylah who has a business degree and helped him set up the online business.

He has also set up a second business, Hair-rees, making and selling Kawakawa Balm and Facial sugar scrub that he makes himself at home.

The new venture came about through his learning about native plants and kawakawa soon became one of his favourites.

Trey experimented with base oils such as coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil, grape seed oil and sweet almond oil to get the right mix for a good natural product and one of the best things about the kawakawa he uses is it is sourced straight his mara (garden).

His aim at the moment is to raise money from sales and donate it to the Wainuiomata Pataka Kai. The business name Hair-ree came from when he was making scrunchies for his little sister Ree-Anna and he decided to included her name in it.

Christmas gardening shopping: By Wally Richards Christmas is getting very near with only about 6 weeks till Xmas week.

Many of you will have already started putting a lot of thought into what gifts they would like to give and some will have completed most of their Christmas shopping already.

Others like myself are still thinking what to give to someone that is so hard to buy for.

A gift that is perfect is one that brings pleasure to the receiver as well as the giver.

This means giving a gift that has really been thought about and often will have some personal input from the giver.

For example young children making something, or drawing a picture, to give to their grand parents are treasures to be carefully stored and enjoyed for years.

Perennial plants are like that, they keep giving for years making them excellent gift choices for loved ones and friends.

I know this because people will phone me asking about a plant that they were given in the past that is not faring so well and they need to revive it because it was a special gift.

Think about this; a young couple with a family are given an apple tree to plant on their section for Xmas.

Within a few years that tree is producing a great harvest of fresh, healthy apples for the family to enjoy. As long as that tree is providing an annual harvest the giver will be remembered, even from beyond the grave.

I know of roses that were gifts 30 to 40 years ago still producing an abundance of blooms each year given by a mother or grandparents, long passed but cherished in memRU\ WKURXJK WKH DQQXDO À RZHULQJ Fruit trees, roses or a specimen plant gift can make the giver, in a sense, immortal for a long time.

This Christmas think gardening DQG WKH SOHDVXUH SOXV KHDOWK EHQH¿ WV it can have for the receiver.

Besides you can contribute not only with your money but also with your Labour in making the gift more personal.

Here are a few ideas starting with a glasshouse either A-frame or leanto; they come as kits and you can help put it together for the receiver.

I recommend a glass, glasshouse as they will last for a life time and only need panes replaced if broken.

A glasshouse for a person or family that loves to garden creates a new dimension to their gardening.

It allows growing out of season tomatoes and capsicum, perfect for germinating seeds and striking cuttings, ideal for growing those more tropical plants that wont do well outdoors in your climate.

There is nothing better on a miserable winters day than to be pottering around in your nice warm glasshouse.

How about a raised garden for a elderly parent or a young family to grow vegetables in?

You can construct an ideal one on VLWH XVLQJ URR¿ QJ LURQ DQG [ PP SRVWV SDLQWHG WR NHHS WKH chemicals sealed).

The structure just sits on the JURXQG EHVW RQ FRQFUHWH LW PDNHV an excellent place to grow vegetables, once it has been filled to two thirds with organic waste and compost.

Next to consider is a compost maker and by far the best are the tumbler ones as they will convert organic waste to compost in the quickest time.

A worm farm is also another excellent gardening gift producing worm casts and worm pee to the EHQH¿ W RI \RXU JDUGHQV DV ZHOO DV recycling all kitchen green wastes.

A rose in a container makes a lovely gift and now is the time to purchase and pot up.

You need, one bush or standard rose, one container that is about 20 litres or more, a bag of compost, a punnet of trailing lobelia or alyssum.

Make sure the container selected is either straight up and down or that

the top is wider than the base with no middle bit wider than the top.

Fill the container with purchased compost to about half full and place some sheep manure pellets, blood & bone and Neem Granules before adding the rose removed from its bag or pot.

Plant the lobelia or alyssum around the edge so they will trail over.

Not only does it make it more decorative but the foliage helps reduce moisture loss from mix and they certainly let you know when the mix is drying out. Place the rose in a good light shelter spot outside till you are ready to wrap and give. $ ¿ QDO WRXFK FDQ EH VSUD\LQJ WKH leaves with Vaporgard to make them really green and shiny.

Similar can be done with a fruit tree but then the container wants to be about 50 litres or more and LQVWHDG RI SODQWLQJ À RZHUV DURXQG the rim go for either a herb such as parsley, thyme or basil.

The fruit tree can be any variety you would like to give from citrus, feijoa, to pip or stone fruit.

Dwarf types are good but not necessary as they all need root pruning in the future. $QQXDO À RZHUV RU KHUEV FDQ EH potted into nice containers using compost as the growing medium.

Pot up now with colour spots or herb plants then they should be putting on a really good show about Xmas time.

Children can help potting up for grandparents and then can proudly say they did it.

Excellence in student craft and design celebrated On display at The Dowse is an innovative knitwear collection that challenges current binary gender fashion norms and has taken out the ECC Supreme Award at this year’s ECC Student Craft Design Awards.

AUT Master of Creativity student Daniel Collings’ Bound by Binary collection used a technique the judges called “striking” and “clever”, with a four-colour digitalknit that appears to be another fabric from a distance.

Daniel says of the capsule collection: “...through incorporating existing gender expression markers, physical construction techniques, and digital-knit manipulation, the work mashes together the masculine with the feminine allowing for the spectrum of gender to stand out

and be celebrated within singular garments.”

They took home a prize of $2,000 and also won the Friends of the Dowse fashion category valued at $1,000.

The ECC NZ Student Craft Design Awards are run by the Friends of the Dowse, and uniquely offer awards for tertiary students in multi-discipline work across both craft and design. The awards are open to all New Zealand tertiary students with categories including ceramic, illustration, fashion, jewellery, product, furniture, lighting, and surface design, with two special awards, L’affare Innovation in Sustainability and People’s Choice.

Students entering this year’s awards have had the challenge of studying with the uncertainties of Covid-19, but the judges said they were impressed with the high quality of the work entered.

Awards director Heather Crichton says this year was the biggest group of finalists they have ever had.

“The awards are in their 35th year and although we’ve had to deal

with Covid, we are glad to see that students have pushed through and submitted entries. We are excited to showcase the work of all 27 finalists at an exhibition at The Dowse in Lower Hutt from this Saturday.”

The 2021 judging panel included an international judge for the first time, renowned British designer Tom Dixon who judged the lighting design and furniture design categories. He joined lighting design/

Second round of funding opens for local initiatives The second round of funding for local initiatives that help overcome homelessness across Aotearoa New Zealand opens on 16 November.

Some $6 million is available in round two of the Local Innovation and Partnership Fund, to support the development and implementation of local initiatives that respond to and prevent homelessness.

Funding is available to community groups and councils of up to $100,000 per initiative for small projects and up to $1 million per initiative for medium to large projects.

“This fund allows the Government to partner with organisations looking at locally driven, place-based solutions to homelessness in their rohe or region,” says Associate Housing Minister Marama Davidson. “Addressing homelessness is a key priority for this Government and it is a challenge that requires the collective mahi of many stakeholders.”

The latest funding round follows strong interest in round one in 2020, when about $4 million in grants were distributed to help community groups work together on initiatives to address homelessness.

Round one grant recipients included Te Taumata o Ngati Whakaue Iho Ake Trust (Rotorua), whose project aims to provide services, positive relationships and connection with tikanga Maori for people who have experienced long-term homelessness.

Another successful applicant,155 Whare Awhina, used the grant to bring several organisations across Whangarei together to

develop a taitamariki youth housing plan, co-designed with taitamariki young people facing housing deprivation.

“The Government wants to hear from more organisations like 155 Whare Awhina and Te Taumata o Ngati Whakaue Iho Ake Trust who were round one Grant recipients,” Minister Davidson says. “They’re making a difference in their communities in many ways.”

“All of the initiatives are being delivered through partnerships that include at least one community organisation with experience working with people experiencing homelessness and this will be the case again for round two,” Minister Davidson says.

The Local Innovation and Partnership Fund was set up in 2020. It was one of 18 actions set out in the Aotearoa Homelessness Action Plan to support local initiatives to reduce and prevent homelessness. It was designed to support Maori providers, hapu, iwi, community organisations, not for profit organisations and wider community partners to work together on innovative solutions to homelessness in their area.

The Action Plan made $16.6 million available through the fund over a three-year period.

Applications for the Local Innovation and Partnership Fund will be available on the HUD website: https://www.hud. govt.nz/local-innovation-partnership-fund and open between 16 November and 28 February 2022.

James McDonald deserves Halberg nomination Is it time champion Kiwi jockey James McDonald got more mainstream credit for his achievements?

The 29-year-old has a compelling case for a Halberg nomination at the very least after his exploits during the Melbourne Cup Carnival at Flemington.

McDonald claimed 10 wins, the most-ever in the carnival, including the Melbourne Cup on Verry Elegant.

McDonald’s 10-win week breaks his idol Brett Prebble’s record, cementing his spot amongst the great performers on the turf.

New Zealand best ever jockey Lance O’Sullivan says he is now this country’s best ever jockey despite his young age.

Like when Colin Meads gave Richie McCaw the nod for best All Black ever, that endorsement is good enough for me especially when

jockeys don’t hit their prime until closer to 40.

“They’re going to be talking about James McDonald in 50-100 years from now,” O’Sullivan said of McDonald when he spoke to national media.

McDonald has 59 Group 1 winners already in a career which is likely not even at the halfway mark.

Despite being a rugby, racing and beer society over the years,

horse racing has struggled to garner mainstream media attention on a regular basis.

Part of that, in my view, is horse racing’s inability to move with the times and encourage young people into the game. Along with the mistrust they have of mainstream media potentially caused by the public perception that the sport is secretive and hard to grasp when it comes to things that happen behind

closed doors.

There are plenty of horse racing fans of both codes in the media but somewhere there is a circuit break.

However, McDonald deserves a Sportsperson of the Year nomination.

His record-breaking feat in Melbourne demands it and if he is left off then it would be a travesty.

He is the best thing horse racing has going for it even if he is now on a global stage.

Development clinic for softball Softball New Zealand and the Developing Sox girls coaches held a clinic over the weekend, providing Wainuiomata Softball Club girls with an awesome opportunity.

The open clinic was an opportunity for coaches to help with skill development and share DSX philosophies and values as well

as identify young talent for future camps.

It was an action packed day of skills stations and fun games.

The girls say they learned a lot of new skills like different ways to bunt the ball and did a lot of different drills to improve their techniques.

Uncertain future for dog club By: Gerald Rillstone Wainuiomata’s Dog Training Club faces an uncertain future after their latest call for volunteer trainers failed to find the numbers needed to keep the club open.

Club president Michael Deys has been canvassing for volunteers to become dog trainers for the last two years and from the recent call nine people showed an interest.

“We made contact with the nine people and over a period of two to three weeks that went down to five people. We had a meet and greet and only four people turned up and we put plans for the training to go ahead. Two people pulled out and we had to pull the pin on our plan to train instructors,” Michael says.

Next Monday the club will hold a committee meeting to determine what the next step for the club will be.

“I think it is a case of most people do not want a responsibility they want to keep things at arms length,” he says.

Other clubs in the region have offered to help out temporarily but what the club needs is certainty for the future and if they can’t find the necessary number of trainers to be trained and ready to give their time in the evenings once a week the classes can’t continue.

Wainuiomata Dog Training Club was established around 1976 and has long been part of the fabric of Wainuiomata.

It held it’s first show at Richard Prouse Park. The club started it’s training in the carpark at the Wainuiomata Mall which is an all weather surface.

When the Mall started weekend trading the carpark became too busy and the club had to move it’s training to Fernlea school for about 2 years, until they arranged with the council to have their own grounds at the end of Burden Ave where the club rooms are today.

The building is owned by the club and the grounds are leased from the council and what the future for the club will be is yet to be decided.
