Wellington’s new Mayor Andy Foster welcomed councillors to morning tea on Tuesday following Saturday’s nail-biter election. Former Mayor Justin Lester conceded defeat on

National Radio by 11pm on Saturday night, but it was Sunday afternoon before it was confirmed that Andy, the former Wharangi Onslow Western Ward councillor, had won. Continued on page 2.

All ours: Wellington’s incoming Mayor Andy Foster is flanked by returning councillors for the Wharangi Onslow/Western Ward Simon Woolf and Diane Calvert, and new councillors Rebecca Matthews, Wharangi with Jenny Condie Takapu Northern Ward at far right. Of the two other Northern Ward councillors, Malcolm Sparrow is overseas and Jill Day had escaped the victory photo. (See overleaf) PHOTO supplied.

Councillors meet Mayor to plan future roles Continued from page 1. It was Andy’s third tilt at the job since he came to council in 1992. This time, his backers included film mogul Sir Peter Jackson and his wife Dame Fran Walsh, the couple, like Andy, being long-standing opponents of the proposed development at Shelly Bay. When the Independent Herald nailed Andy’s feet to the floor on Tuesday morning, he had spent part of the previous day on “media stuff”. “Seven or eight interviews, including one hour of talkback by 10.30am were the first jobs,” he says. Then there was reorganising the Mayor’s office and personnel, and talks with some councillors, the rest scheduled for Tuesday afternoon. “I am going to find out their aspirations, ensure everyone’s got something they can get their teeth into,” he says. It’s not yet certain when the Deputy Mayor will be announced. “I don’t want a ‘yes’ person,” Andy says, adding it

needs to be someone offering public support, but unafraid to pull him up, challenge him. “In private though.” The Deputy Mayor will attend some of the “enormous” number of functions, also providing an interface between him and other councillors, and WCC staff. “Someone who can chair meetings confidently too.” He plans to change directions on spending priorities, and is critical of the way strategic decisions have been made. “Let’s Get Wellington Moving for example, was never debated at committee stage. It came straight to the full council, where speakers have only three minutes. “Unless there’s a really strong reason, I’d want plans discussed at strategic committee stage.” The major strategy committee, which meets three times a month, includes all 15 councillors but speaking rules are not so strict. “That gives councillors a chance for discussion, to knock things about a bit.”

Wellington City Council results The low turnout of voters in New Zealand’s local body elections has drawn plenty of comment. In Wellington, there was a big rush in the last two days, but by noon on Saturday, only 39.89 percent of those eligible had voted.

The mayoralty vote saw former Wharangi councillor Andy Foster come in with 26,707 votes, defeating. Justin Lester who recorded 26,204 votes Diane Calvert was third at 11,138, though she was the highest-polling councillor in Wellington.

Other candidates were:

Jenny Condie, 6890; Conor Hill, 4568; Norbert Hausberg, 590; Ajay Rathod, 414; Don Newt McDonald, 324; Andrew Grantham Cox, 149 In the Takapu Northern Ward, the three elected were:

Jill Day with 3343 votes;

But it’s good to record that in Wharangi Onslow Western Ward, our readers did a lot better than the city’s average with 47.51 percent. In the Takapu Northern Ward we were a bit below the average at 36.97 percent.

Malcolm Sparrow 2959; Jenny Condie 2843 Excluded: Peter Gilberd 2215; John Apanowicz 1905; Graeme Sawyer 849; John Peters 511; Tracy Hurst-Porter 418 Wharangi Onslow Western ward:

Diane Calvert, Wellington’s highest-scoring councillor, 4079; Simon Woolf 3699; Rebecca Matthews 3703; Michelle Rush 2432; Conor Hill 1918; Rohan Biggs 1537; Richard McIntosh 1314; Ray Chung 1095; Andy Foster Withdraw

New Zealand ShakeOut 2019 Today, Thursday, October 17 sees the national earthquake drill and tsunami hikoi (walk) at 1.30pm for 30 to 60 seconds. ShakeOut is held nationwide to remind people of the correct action to take during an earthquake and to practise tsunami evacuation if in a coastal area. In an earthquake you must Drop, Cover and Hold. Drop down on your hands and knees. Cover your head and neck (or your entire body if possible) under a sturdy table or desk (if it is within a few steps of you). Hold on to your shelter (or your position to protect your head and neck) until the shaking stops. If the shaking shifts your shelter around, move with it. Six years ago, after a 15year campaign, plastic surgeon Dr Swee Tan of Khandallah founded the Gillies McIndoe Research Institute (GMRI), a registered charity in Newtown, next to Wellington Hospital. “We are working to create more effective and low-cost treatments for cancer,” says Dr Tan, founder and executive director. This involves “repurposing” existing drugs, for example, those for treating high blood pressure. It all started with Dr Tan’s team’s work in strawberry birthmarks and their discovery of the role of stem cells and the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) that underpinned the current treatment. These large and disfiguring tumours create misery for affected children and the successful treatment, making them disappear, led to work now drawing international attention. The institute’s 16-person team has now found cancer stem cells in 14 types of cancer, moving far beyond the original work with birthmarks. “Imagine a beehive with a queen bee. The cancer stem

cells are the queen bee,” says Dr Tan. “You go after the queen bee to manage the hive, and you go after the cancer stem cells to manage cancer.” They have identified cancer stem cells that come with a Common Regulatory System, the RAS, in fourteen types of cancer, including melanoma, brain, breast, lung, mouth, prostate and colon cancers. Based on their work the team has developed a new can-

cer treatment approach using a combination of low-cost and existing oral medications that target cancer stem cells. They are trialling this treatment on four types of cancer including the deadly brain cancer glioblastoma and malignant melanoma. “Each of these medications costs $5 a prescription, taken by mouth, at home,” Dr Tan says. This effective and low-cost option comes as our country

spends $1 billion a year on cancer treatment and the cost is escalating, especially the new and expensive cancer drugs. Now they seek both philanthropic and Government funding for an already-approved four-year clinical trial, $4 million per year. “We set out to relieve human suffering,” Dr Tan says. For further information, go to www.gmri.org.nz and their Facebook page (Gillies McIndoe Research Institute).

GWRC results The five vacancies for Poneke Wellington on the Greater Wellington Regional Council elections on Saturday were filled by Thomas Nash, Green; Glenda Hughes, The Wellington Party; Roger Blakely, Independent; Daran Ponter Labour and David Lee, Get Wellington Moving.

Local club hears from local scientist The Otari Probus Club invited medical researcher Dr Swee Tan of Khandallah to one of their monthly meetings earlier this year. Dr Tan heads the Gillies McIndoe Research Institute. Those at the meeting could see the immense potential of the discoveries of Dr Tan’s team and their implication for the treatment of cancer,

with its potential to revolutionise the understanding and treatment of cancer and other diseases. Every month Otari Probus Club meets to hear a guest speaker and also to hear from a member speaker. “The lives of our member speakers are always fascinating,” says spokesperson Celia Simpson.

Showroom: 29 Hutt Road, Thorndon

“Often it is a real surprise to learn that someone you see at meetings and chat to occasionally has this amazing and interesting background, personally and in the business world. “For our next meeting we will be hiring a bus and travelling to the Rimutaka prison for a meal cooked by the inmates,” she adds.

Stink bug warning Biosecurity Minister Damien O’Connor is warning travelling Kiwis to be vigilant as the high-season for the crop-eating brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB) has begun. “We’re on high alert,” he says, adding that the high season runs until April 30. Those travelling to Rugby World Cup matches are warned that recent swarms of both green and yellow spotted stink bugs have occurred in Kobe. Biosecurity NZ staff based there are ensuring the right measures are in place he says. Working is also being done on hi-tech scanning equipment to find the bug in luggage and mail and three dogs have been trained specifically to find stink bugs.

COUNCILLORS Jenny Condie – a “Blue-Green” Dr Jenny Condie of Tawa is now the third Takapu Northern Ward councillor, replacing Peter Gilberd. She has nailed her colours to a different mast – not Peter’s Red-Green flag of Labour, but a more business-focussed “Blue-Green” one. Like Peter she has an academic background, hers a Ph D in accounting and entrepreneurship that has seen her work as a former Treasury employee and as a university lecturer.

Jen ny says her nat u ra l “tribe” on council will see her work with the right wing on business issues, as well as bringing a Green perspective on such issues as climate change. “The two tribes won’t necessarily overlap,” she says. The mother of two says she has “a thousand things” she wants to get her teeth into “Let’s Get Wellington Moving”, and a business case for a mass transit option being right up there.

Diane Calvert – top scorer Diane Calvert is moving into her second term as a Wharangi Onslow Western ward councillor. Wellington’s top-scoring candidate with 4079 votes, she was declared elected after only one iteration, before preferences were allocated. “I’m really pleased,” she says. Though she came in third in her bid for the mayoralty, behind Andy Foster and Justin

Lester, the 11,138 votes she recorded are, she says , three times the number Andy had recorded in 2016. And it was the preferences her supporters allocated that got Andy over the line, unsurprising she says, given that their policies are “quite aligned” and Andy, Simon Woolf and herself have been the Wharangi team for three years.

Rebecca Matthews: The new Andy By Glenise Dreaver

“I’m the new Andy!” says Rebecca Matthews, Wharangi Onslow Western Ward’s newest councillor. She has filled the spot left by Andy Foster’s elevation to the mayoralty. However, while they share a green focus, this is a Labourbacked candidate. “And I’m not a Youthquaker!” she adds. “In fact, I’ve never felt so old in all my life!” At 47, after fifteen years of union advocacy, Rebecca’s

youthful levels of bounce and enthusiasm, especially over issues like the buses have, however, obviously attracted voters. There are also her unruly, flaming red curls. (Think Jenny the Vixen off The Chase on prime time TV. But it’s her own hair, not a bad Vixen wig, though she admits to added colour…..) Rebecca says her a really long campaign, was not particularly visible. “On the phones, knocking at doors. Talking. Listening.”

The tight northern suburbs team’s been broken up and this year’s Christmas Parade might look a little different - councillor Peter Gilberd (far left) , has gone though former Deputy Mayor Jill Day and councillor Malcolm Sparrow do remain. PHOTO: Glenise Dreaver.

Difficult campaign for Simon Woolf “Pretty rapt and pretty relieved,” says Simon Woolf, re-elected to the Wharangi Onslow Western ward seat. Though he made it to all the multiple candidate meetings, he had twice had major family illnesses, once with his mother here seriously ill, then his sister in Auckland, also very unwell and on her own. “Family always comes first,” he says.

Simon adds that voters were aware he would stand up and be counted, especially on issues surrounding the bus network and Let’s Get Wellington Moving. When all else failed on that one, he and Diane Calvert had resorted to a submission and appearance at a parliamentary select committee. “Unorthodox, but they were very grateful for our feedback.”

Jill Day: high polling candidate Jill Day, a first-time councillor who became Deputy Mayor part way through her term, was a high-polling candidate returned on the first iteration of votes, not requiring allocated preferences to be confirmed.

She is a member for the Takapu Northern Ward, identifying as an Independent. Jill was the first Maori women to become deputy mayor in Wellington. In Wellington, the deputy’s role is allocated by the Mayor.

Life Flight Trust pilot Dylan Harding, Mike Beausoleil, crew, and Sandy Gaylard Mitre 10 Crofton Downs, handing over a cheque for $4368.92.

Mitre 10 Crofton Downs had another successful Ladies Night this year with 240 ladies attending. They tried their skills on making a candle holder by using a drop saw, drill press and lastly a mouse sander to finish off. Having a go at using a drill was challenging for some, but fun, along with getting advice from suppliers on other products, with over 20 stations for those present to wander around. Life Flight Trust was M10’s chosen charity again and through generous donations from suppliers and the women attending, they raised their biggest donation yet of $2487.41. Life Flight are receiving a cheque for $4368.92 which includes

2018/19 donations and are very grateful to receive this donation from such a fun event, which they love coming along to support. M10 Crofton Downs looks forward to another successful event next year. “Mitre 10 Crofton Downs makes a real difference. Life Flight absolutely relies on donations to keep flying,” says Hayley Fordyce from Life Flight Trust. “On average $2500 is required from the community to fund every emergency mission we fly. “The incredible donation raised at Mitre 10 Crofton Downs’ Ladies Night will be used to make local life-saving flights possible”

Irina Alpeeva, Khandallah “I lost my envelope but I did my research on the candidates and really wanted to vote.”

Jenny Chisholm, Wilton “Yes, I don’t know If it makes a whole lot of difference.”

Kristine Craw, Karori “I didn’t vote but I am still happy with the main result.”

Matt Colquhoun, Ngaio “No, but I don’t mind.”

Confidence with colour By Glenise Dreaver

For artist Morag Stokes of Khandallah, understanding colour is key to her love of art. The downstairs studio in her home, set up for The Artist Sessions, the egular workshops she holds there, has walls festooned with coloured bottles and countless tubes of colour. “I enjoy colour theory” Morag says. “The mixing relationships, the quirks of pigments and different brands of

paint. Depending on whether you’re working with coloured lights, pigments or pixels, the theory changes.” The relationships of colours as you mix can also be quite complex she says, especially when you factor in the way different pigments and brands of paint behave. Morag says she works with students to use colours they’ve generated to create harmonious colour, starting with making colour studies and creating a colour wheel for every mood.

then working them into a painting. “And I introduce role models in the use of colour,” she says, showing work from such artists as Piet Mondrian, the great twentieth century Dutch master. Morag will be holding the threehour workshops at the Karori Art and Craft Centre from Tuesday October 22 - December 10 from 1-4pm. Participants can opt in to some, or all. For more information contact Margaret on 04-476 6817

Residents and staff from Enliven’s Cashmere Home and Cashmere Heights Home in Johnsonville had many reasons to party recently. The homes achieved recertification from the Ministry of Health, rolled out a new resident information management system and welcomed spring with colour, music and dancing. “There were a lot of reasons to have a party!” Cashmere Home and Cashmere Heights Home recreation team leader Linda Lankshear says. To achieve recertification the homes underwent a rigorous audit process which looked at a multitude of things, including the way residents are cared for, how staff interact with the residents, how policies and procedures are followed and applied, documentation standards and time frames, the general environment as well as the satisfaction levels of residents, families and staff. Based on the auditors’ report, the Ministry of Health then determines the length of recertification before the next audit. Four years is the maximum length and that is what Cashmere Home and Cashmere Heights Home recently achieved. Two separate parties were held at the different homes, and residents’ families came along to help celebrate, Linda says, along with members of Enliven’s senior management team. “The residents helped to make our flower decorations. We also made lanterns with butterflies on them and had freshly-picked daffodils on the tables.” Elegant ‘mocktails’ and a dainty high tea were also served. A musician played old songs which Linda says ignited the memories of many

residents, who ended up teaching staff and families the correct dance moves for each song. “We even had people in wheelchairs on the dancefloor. There was lots of laughter, smiling and dancing.” Enliven’s Cashmere Home and sister site Cashmere Heights Home, both on Helston Road, Johnsonville, offer rest home, hospital and short-term respite and health recovery care. Wellingtonians come from all over the world and some can face substantial challenges in settling in. On Saturday October 12 at Churton Park Community Centre, these issues were shared in a korero/kuch baatein/ series of discussions led by Kashmir Kaur. As both chairperson of the Wellington Hindi School and a member of the Asia New Zealand Foundation’s leadership network, she sees people struggling to integrate and has sought ways of offering help. Kashmir recognises that language and cultural stigmas around sensitive issues such as mental health and gender equality can pose particular difficulties and so organised the occasion. Discussion was led by people she described as role models for tackling these challenges. They were Ohariu MP Greg O’Connor, Crystal Tawhai, a policy advisor at the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, Dr Angela Lim, a doctor, board director and entrepreneur, whose presentation was videoed, and Vanisa Dhiru president of the National Council of Women. Kashmir told those present that young people are a key to helping the wider immigrant community. So, through initiatives like this workshop, she is reaching out to community language schools, their students, staff and families, together with those who support them. She sees discussion in the community language (mother tongue) as key to helping shift the diaspora com mun it y m indset on some of the challenging issues. She also recognises that continuing the use of the language helps to preserve it. This discussion was the first of a series that will promote a better understanding of a range of topics that can help diaspora youths realise their full potential as New Zealanders.

Stonehenge Aotearoa

The Royal’s an old hotel. If you listen, it’ll whisper to you tales from long ago, both good and bad. Epic tales of adventurers, dreamers, rogues and rebels – those who chose a different path. It will tell you about times past. When weary travellers who’d crossed the Rimutakas could get a bed, a good meal and a drink before riding into the Wairarapa,

the “land of glistening waters”. It will tell you of the times when steam power was king. When the wondrous Fell steam engine was invented that pulled travellers up and over the ranges to The Royal. It will tell you of mysterious places and people, and of the characters that stay in the hotel rooms.

Stonehenge Aotearoa – an insight into your ancestors Although similar in size and appearance to the Stonehenge on Salisbury plain, Stonehenge Aotearoa is not a replica. It is a complete and working structure designed for its precise location in NZ. Stonehenge Aotearoa, near Carterton, is a window into the past where the visitor

can rediscover the knowledge of their ancestors. From August to 22nd December we are open 10am-4pm Wednesday to Sunday plus Labour Day (Oct 28). Book your tour at Stonehenge-aotearoa.co.nz o r r i n g 0 6 37 7 16 0 0 o r e m a i l : info@stonehenge-aotearoa.co.nz

Spring is an active time in the Garden. The Garden Tool Store owners Bryan Innes and Joanna Pearsall encourage home gardeners and are happy to see people creating paradise: growing food, flowers, functional forests and participating in community gardens and farmers markets. They understand that gardeners are proud

of their work and love to use quality tools. Bronze tools from Austria, inspired by Viktor Schauberger and Rudolph Steiner, are popular, especially as they have a lifetime guarantee, are good for the soil, look beautiful, don’t rust and make great gifts.

Woman rugby coach taking on Premiers By Glenise Dreaver

“I’m up for the challenge,” says Jude Perez, newly appointed head coach of the Johnsonville Rugby Football Club’s Premier side She says she feels “very blessed” to be successful in her application for the job. One of the first females in Wellington club history to be a coach at premier level, it’s clear she is sincere when she says she doesn’t like being the centre of attention. But given her new role, it’s inevitable. “I’m hoping it will open up avenues for all women to take a chance and be brave,” Jude says, adding that it is has been a tough road for her and she persevered through it to get noticed as a woman. “But hey, times have changed.” Jude’s role is a voluntary one, and her paying job is as a senior IT test analyst, bringing skills which have to be useful in her new role. A “very, very” long term player herself, she has worked through

the ranks during her playing career and now with her coaching, over the past 15 years, on her home turf in the Hutt. Then in the 2019 season she became an assistant coach for the Premiers here in Johnsonville. This season has been a tough one she says, though she acknowledges small rewards with player’s performances, especially their team culture. It turned out well in the end, with the Premiers taking out the award for best team culture. It has been a while, however, since they won the prized Swindale Shield in 1998. It’s no secret that the club has struggled to be competitive in recent years though and Jude says that getting stability back by retaining players and developing their skills towards the club’s vision, and build ing on that from the proud record of the past, is going to be important for the club. The already existing great team culture will be key to maintain and build on she says.

SPORTS TALK with Jacob Page

Tackle the TMO in favour of common sense Tackle round the legs, it’s the only safe place to make contact at this Rugby World Cup. The way the high tackle laws have been set by World Rugby, the reality is teams in playoff games over the next week will be with 14 or even 13 men on the field. The rules around high tackles and in particular, contact to the head, have zero wriggle-room when it comes to cards being dished out. Regardless if a ball carrier is falling, carrying low or simply going to ground close to the try line, high contact will result in at least a 10 minute sin-bin and that could be tournament defining. Common sense seems to be thrown out the window. I’m a fan of protecting players

against concussions. That’s a real issue in all contact sports in 2019, but a high-speed game will result in high contact from time-to-time. Rugby lawmakers need to put more emphasis on the attacker to protect themselves. Attackers should not be allowed to run low or take close contact to the try line and have the protection of the high-tackle laws. It’s simply farcical and it is ruining games as spectacles. The Rugby World Cup is an entertainment entity first and foremost and while typhoons are unavoidable, poor laws and horrible interpretations are inexcusable. It also creates another issue with the television match officials having too much say over general play issues.

A game, already slowed by messy and hard-to-understand scrum laws, is now being slowed as a TMO watches replay after replay of potential foul play. It’s grating as a viewer. It is important to get the obvious decisions right but marginal decisions are resulting in penalties and coloured cards which are affecting games and their outcomes. Japan appear to have been fantastic hosts and have energetic crowds but the product on the field has been officiated with a level of over-zealousness which has been hard to stomach. All this before the big games happen, the matches where countries set their sights four years out. Buckle-up, folks — it’s bound to be contentious.

Planning for Round the Bays Brendan Foot Supersite Round the Bays have announced the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand (MHF) is the principal charity for the 2020 event. There will also be another three affiliated charities; Kaibosh Food Rescue, Special Olympics New Zealand. MHF will receive one dolla r f rom ever y regist ration for Rou nd t he Bays 2 0 2 0. “It means a lot to us to be selected,” M H F ch ief execut ive Shau n Robi nson says. “Physical activity is a proven way to improve mental wellbeing, and events such as this have the added bonus of connecting people in a shared pursuit which benefits the whole community.”

Organisers Sport Wellington believe MHF is a great fit, as there is a positive link between being active and the effects on mental health. For Sport Wellington, John Grieve says that registering for Round the Bays helps give MHF funds to continue providing essential resources and it also means active benefits for participants’ mental health. “So it’s a win-win!” He’s encouraging people to join the teams running for Kaibosh Food Rescue, Special Olympics New Zealand, and Healthy Futures. Kaibosh reduces food waste and food poverty by distributing quality surplus food from donors to community groups to help people in need. Special Olympics New Zealand supports people with an intellec-

tual disability, aiming to develop the athletes both physically and emotionally, as well as providing an environment to make friends and feel a sense of belonging. And through the delivery of the Green Prescription programme, Sport Wellington works alongside Healthy Futures. T h a t o r g a n i s a t io n wo r k s with schools and councils to provide community exercise groups, gardening and cooking classes in schools and their ‘Healthy Futures Water Kit’ aimed to encourage drinking water over juice or fizzy drinks. For more information about the Round the Bays event, and to register from November 1, visit wellingtonroundthebays.co.nz

They won’t be bringing in big names from outside, but will rebuild the club will work towards retaining former senior players along with upcoming young local players, a good starting point in rebuilding this

club, Jude adds. And she is being honest. The club knows she has aspirations to go even further in the coaching world. “Johnsonville wants to support that,” she says.
