Studying to make a difference The scholarships are open to students from eight schools (four in the Hutt, four in Porirua), including Wainuiomata High School. The University offers guaranteed financial support, academic mentoring and other support throughout the recipients’ undergraduate degree programme, including accommodation in the first year of study. There are up to ten recipients, and it is unique for the key criteria not being all about academic success, instead on demonstration of resilience, innovation and overcoming adversity.

Nicole says, “growing up around a lot of foster kids has exposed me to the reality of the foster system and the mental and physical effects it can have on these kids – I want to be able to make a difference.”

Nicole who grew up in Wainuiomata says a few of her teachers had been encouraging her year group to apply and get our personal statements done as the

potential of receiving $50,000 was too good to turn down.

“I remember one of my teachers saying “Applying for scholarships may be hard and time-consuming at the moment, but imagine if you do get the $50,000, that’s your whole uni paid for and all you had to do was fill out a few forms and write a personal statement.” And she was right.

For Nicole growing up in a foster home she says she has had so many siblings she has lost count.

“My mum used to be a foster mum, so I had new siblings coming in and out of the home

throughout my childhood, all coming from multiple different backgrounds of ethnicity, upbringing, home issues,” she says.

Receiving the scholarship has been meaningful to her because, she says, growing up in Wainuiomata, especially in her household she felt pretty trapped.

“Our family adventures were limited as we’ve never owned a car. I’ve never even left the country, I had lived in the same house for 18 years. Knowing that the scholarship came with a full year of accommodation, I knew that if I was awarded the scholarship that was my ticket out of Wainuiomata,” she says.

Wainuiomata Intermediate senior students Lawrence Lesniak and Christine are well prepared for this weeks open evening for year six enrolments.

Lawrence says there are sa’u many opportunities at the school in both sports and a wide range of learning.

“I like the learning we get to do and how we get to freely roam around and do our work in different spaces,” Lawrence says.

“I look forward to showing them what we do here and how it works and it is important for people to know all the opportunities the school provides for our students to maybe make a career out of, like cooking, music,

digitech and woodwork, sewing and art.”

Christine is looking forward to explaining how the school assimilates education and what the different learning environments are about.

“In some spaces we have independent learning and in other classes they have it more teacher directed learning,” Christine says.

“When I came here I also got involved in the student council and a lot of sports which are well supported by the school.”

Lawrence says what he will miss the most when he heads to high-school is the great teachers he has had.

The open evening will run from 6pm till 7:30 this Thursday.

inbrief news Beacons a navigation resource Greater Wellington is working with Blind Low Vision NZ to install tech in the office’s public facilities to enable members of our community more independent and safe access.

Six BlindSquare beacons have been installed in Greater Wellington’s Cuba Street office reception area, right through to the council chamber and emergency exits.

BlindSquare is a Bluetooth and GPS enabled app developed for the blind, deafblind and low vision community that provides detailed points of interest and intersections for safe, reliable travel on the street and within buildings.

On a continuous basis, Blind Low Vision NZ and the blind community provide Greater Wellington insights and help with user testing on accessibility, tech and services.

Mayor honours outstanding contributions Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry has conferred two Mayoral Citations and three Mayoral Certificates of Appreciation awards on to four local past and present residents.

Greater Wellington councillors welcomed strong representation from Pōneke Collective, a broad coalition of students and welfare groups seeking more equitable access to public transport.

The Collective asked the Committee to pilot free public transport for Community Service Card holders and students in Wellington region – and Greater Wellington Chair Daran Ponter says their presentation couldn’t have come at a better time.

Not only is the council gearing up to undertake a review of Metlink’s fares structure, it’s also urging the Government to extend its Auckland-based trial on reduced fares for low income-earners to Wellington region.

The fares review comes as Greater Wellington prepares for the implementation of the National Ticketing Solution, which will see a unified ticketing solution for buses, trains and ferries across the country.

Finding NZ’s top electrical apprentice There’s great news for Samula Bason, a Wainuiomata electrical apprentice, who came top of the Wellington prelims of the Master Electricians Apprentice of the Year Challenge earlier this month.

As a result he could be in the running for the finals of the challenge - being held in Christchurch on 7 and 8 October.

He was one of 17 apprentices competing on the day - all in the domestic/commercial division.

Each competitor can choose to compete in either the industrial or the commercial/ domestic division.

The focus is on the practical, with competitors in the regional rounds having to complete four one-hour modules reflecting the various issues an apprentice might face on the job, such as checking a motor for faults (industrial division) or wiring a switch board (commercial/ domestic).

The top five of each division will go on to complete five two-hour modules for the top title at the finals in Christchurch on 7 and 8 October – being held in conjunction with the Master Electricians annual conference. The winner of each division and of the Master Electricians Initiative Award will be announced at the conference awards dinner on the Friday evening, 8 October.

The annual challenge is proving a boon for employers as well as their apprentices.

About 5000 electrical apprentices currently work in New Zealand, but many more are needed to meet the growing demand for electricians.

Tobacco tax hikes increase robberies

New research on the robberies of dairies for cigarettes supports the claim that the tobacco tax hikes contributed to the 2016-2017 spike in aggravated tobacco-related crime across New Zealand.

Media reports on 572 robberies between 2009 and 2018 showed dairies were the primary target, more so in lower socioeconomic areas, and disproportionately during colder months.

The paper published in the Safer Communities journal expresses concern about the high level of serious injury and trauma for shop staff incurred in the commission of the robberies.

The phenomenon was widespread across the country with tobacco the main target. It also showed that the risk of robbery is highest on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Hutt City Council carbon reduction plan

Hutt maternity in crisis National List MP, Chris Bishop based in Hutt South says maternity services in the Hutt Valley are in crisis.

“Over the weekend Hutt Hospital’s maternity ward went into a “code red” staffing crisis and at some points just one midwife was working.

“The number of Lead Maternity Carers (LCM) in the Hutt continues to be critically low, which will be made worse by the closure later this year of the BirthWorks five-strong midwifery team.

Answers to Parliamentary written questions to me show that the number of LCMs in the Hutt on 1 June this year was just 28. I understand the numbers are now even lower and set to decline even more with BirthWorks’ closure.”

“This is leaving at least 400 Hutt women without a midwife and I have been contacted by many Hutt families desperate to try and secure a LMC. “Hutt Hospital’s maternity service is short 15 out of 50 full-time equivalent staff.

“The number of babies born by caesarean section in the Hutt is one of the highest in the country. Answers to written questions

show that in 2016, 33 per cent were born by caesarean section an in 2020 it was 40 per cent.

“To make matters worse, the purpose-built Te Awakairangi Birthing Centre at Melling looks like it will close its doors by the end of September unless it secures DHB and/or government funding.”

“The closure of this centre will put even more pressure on Hutt hospital. I have launched a petition to save the centre which can be signed at www.chrisbishop.co.nz/ saveourbirthingcentre “I have written to the Chair of the Hutt Valley DHB, the Minister of Health Andrew Little and Associate Minister of Health Dr Ayesha Verrall about the birthing centre and urged them to fund the centre so it can continue operations.

“The closure of the birthing centre would be a disaster for mums, babies and families in the Hutt Valley.

“Big promises were made by the Government following the damning external review of Hutt maternity in 2019, but have come to nothing, with Hutt maternity in crisis and getting worse.”

Hutt City Council has published the first interim carbon reduction plan for the organisation - Mahere Hukihuki Whakaiti Waro me te Manawaroa A huarangi ma Te Kaunihera o Te Awa Kairangi Interim Carbon Reduction and Climate Resilience Plan 2021-2031.

Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry says in light of the latest IPCC advice which states we’re heading towards a climate catastrophe, all countries, regions, cities, and councils must act now.

“If we don’t begin to act with more urgency, we risk increasing the effects climate change has on our infrastructure, property, public health, biodiversity, economy, and our day to day lives.”

Hutt City Council Chief Executive Jo Miller says the plan represents a significant milestone. “Our plan puts the environment at the front of everything we do and every decision we make.

“If we want to make our city more resilient and a place where everyone thrives, we need to take key steps and actions to reduce our carbon footprint as a council - this plan is an important first step towards this. I’d like to acknowledge Mana Whenua and the Lower Hutt Community Climate Change Response Lead group for their guidance on this plan that sets out 21 actions to help us reduce our emissions.

Campbell Barry says council can lead the way in addressing climate change in Lower Hutt.

“Council has declared a climate emergency, adopted a zero-carbon policy, and prioritised caring for and protecting our environment as one of six key priorities outlined in our 10-year plan. However, we know that we must do more to protect ourselves from future impacts.

“Council’s Interim Carbon Reduction and Climate Resilience Plan won’t solve the climate crisis on its own, but it does show our commitment to continue working alongside our communities in order to address the environmental challenges we all face,” says Campbell Barry.

Investments to reduce carbon were costed and supported through our Long Term Plan 2021-2031. Actions in the plan include: -phasing out natural gas at council facilities and replacing it with low carbon technologies -upgrading Lower Hutt city’s 14,200 streetlights to LED -introducing EVs for the new rubbish and recycling service -having 50 percent electric council vehicles in 2025 and 100 percent by 2030 -investigate the feasibility of removing methane via a controlled flare burn-off at the closed landfill in Wainuiomata.

Rescue cats for a perfect home By: Gerald Rillstone A dedicated deep affinity with animals has all been part of the reason Wainuiomata’s Sonya Chambers has set up cat rescue Wainui Whiskers and is financing it with her own funds and donations.

Sonya has been around animals all her life and loved them and she started out helping capturing felines around Wainuiomata.

“People started referring me and I thought that’s OK I will just keep helping and what I thought I could do was rescue them and get them vet checked and pass them onto the rescues for placement,” she says.

She soon had five cats and decided to start a mini rescue service and go from there.

“It just went ka-pow and that was in December last year and here we are seven months later and have rescued 79 cats, kittens and toms in total and at the moment we have 49 under the rescue and three fosters,” Sonya says.

Saving that cats has turned out to be a big commitment Sonya says. She does it also to help the community with the problem, and will save as many as she can for as long as she can and has paid for a lot of it herself.

She has set up a Give a Little page and does get donations from a range of organisations to help.

And her running costs are substantial with the general cost per animal, $130$170 for desexing, $30-$70 microchip, $100 $200 3 x vaccinations, worming, De-fleeing over 3 vet visits. $10-$20 per week for food/kitty litter for the length of time the cat/kitty is in care.

(This excludes the time it takes to set up & catch the cats/kitties, petrol, cleaning etc) “Any and all donations are put towards these fur babies with love and gratitude.”

Sonya’s mum Susan, also an animal lover, has taken on the role of housing the kittens and cats for adoption and adoption days are planned most weekends with the details on Wainui Whiskers Facebook page.

Like minded blade makers By: Gerald Rillstone Showing off the craft and bringing like minded knife makers together was all part of the gathering at Stackhouse Knives over the weekend.

Helped along by the show, Forged in Fire, making your own knife is a process that is becoming more popular with people from all walks of life.

they are getting a lot of people who work in offices wanting to get busy with their hands and make something and a knife is one way of having a connection to what you are doing.

“It is very satisfying to have something that you have finished with your own hands,” Lena says.

Part of the display on the day saw a range of blades from a Japanese style sword to a Viking dagger and an array of other blades.

Jeremy Winchomee made this knife for his father in-law. It features a knife and fork in pockets in the sheath amd an ornately carved handle with greenstone mounted in it.

Gardening For Health : By Wally Richards

Several years ago I wrote a book called Gardening & Health which is out of print now.

The theme of the book was to assist people that had health issues but were not gardeners; to explain to them how to obtain some really healthy home grown food stuffs very simply.

I based the information from my own experiences on what I had learnt and used to greatly improve my own health and well being.

These days we tend to lose sight of what people have done for hundreds of years to be healthy without the need for mega rich pharmaceutical companies. (they did not exist back then of any consequence) The best available medicines were at the local drug store in which the pharmacist would mix up various concoctions for health complaints.

Most of the stuff they used and sold they no longer have available these days.

One of the first things that I learnt back about 30 years ago was from a book called Sea90 which talked about using the minerals from the Ocean to increase the health of plants.

It also described the benefits that the minerals from the ocean would do to increase the immune system in our bodies and thus our health.

In the book they spoke about wheat grass and barley grass as being two plants which would take up every mineral and element made available to them in the growing medium.

We now know that raw salt from the Ocean in its pure form has 114 minerals and elements being about 95% sodium chloride and the other 5% the 113 elements in perfect balance with each other.

The penny then dropped as wheat grass juice was a bit of a fade about that time yet the grass in juice bars was quite bitter in taste.

The reason being they were not putting all the minerals into the growing medium.

I had three products that were mineral rich, Magic Botanic Liquid (MBL) which is the minerals from prehistoric times, Rock dust which we now have as Wallys Unlocking Your Soil Potential and Wallys Ocean Solids being raw unrefined salt from the sea.

With this new knowledge I grew some wheat grass in a polystyrene tray; the type that you find used in Supermarkets or wholesale fish places.

The tray has a depth of 18cm and with a few holes in the sides near the bottom for drainage they are a great cheap container for growing stuff in.

Filled two thirds full with purchased compost (I prefer Daltons or Oderings as they do not use green waste with

herbicide possibilities in the compost) Then you sprinkle Wallys Ocean Solids over the compost about half a handful along with Wallys Unlocking the soil.

No other manures or foods to be used. Cover the above with about a centimeter of compost and then sprinkle thickly wheat seed over the tray so they are about touching.

Then you mix the MBL at 20mil per litre of water and in a trigger sprayer, spray the seeds till nice and wet. Cover then with either more compost or sharp sand and keep moist.

It pays to put a sheet of glass over the box as birds or mice may find that there is a lot of wheat to eat.

When I grew the wheat grass in this way with all the mineral the cut grass when juiced in a manual juicer was very sweet. The sweetness denotes the goodness and the nutritional value of the grass.

Another thing I noticed back then is if you say obtained about 100 mils of green juice and you put 50mils in the fridge covered; that the 50mils you drank straight away would be very sweet but the 50 mils in the fridge if you drank it that night it would be a bit bitter. So the juice loses its vitality fairly quickly and is best taken as soon as juiced.

Also back then I was contacted by email from a chap in the USA who was looking for subjects for a trial he was conducting on MSM. (Methylsulfonylmethane) You can see why we call it MSM. MSM is a food supplement that is sulphur from plants hence it is not yellow like sulphur from volcanoes instead it is white crystals.

To be a subject you had to supply a very good photo taken of your face before starting the course of having MSM, twice a day morning and nite, for 6 months and then another photo of the face for a comparison. (I think it was to find out about the anti aging effect and the improvement of the skin/complexion.)

I enrolled, received a container of MSM from the States and began taking it.

The first thing I noticed was that my memory improved significantly, I could walk into any room and know why I was there, which itself was amazing.

You know how it happens, you go to do something and when you get there you cant remember why you are there?

The next thing I noticed was a bit of arthritis I had in my right hand disappeared completely.

Sulphur is Natures beauty element and it improves complexion, skin,

hair and nails and has an anti-aging effect.

One of its main attributes is that it carries oxygen to the cells which allows them to discard any rubbish they collect so it will when first taken give you a bit of a detox.

It is said that if you take MSM regularly you will not get cataracts in the eyes which I believe that is correct as my eyesight is far better than it was 30 years ago and according to my eye specialist amazingly good for my age.

The key here is that 60-80 years ago you would have got your bodies daily requirement of sulphur from your food chain. That no longer happens unless you are growing your own and using the likes of gypsum or Wallys Calcium & Health in your food gardens.

Thirty, forty years ago my health was not good being a heavy smoker and drinker (the two used to go hand in hand) Even with the punishment of those vices I found that the wheat grass juice and the MSM greatly assisted in improving my health and back then at 40 I looked more like 80.

Now at 76 people think I am only about in my 50’s.

Of course I stopped drinking and smoking over ten years ago and that has also helped.Garden Enterprises now imports about half a ton of MSM every 6 months and hundreds of people are using it and for their pets to improve their health also.

With all these funny viruses and variants floating around these days you need to improve your immune system which is just common sense.

(I wonder why the Govt and Med safe do not promote that?)

Grow some wheat grass in the garden or in trays, add in the minerals as described.

When it is about 10cm tall cut down some with scissors near soil level.

You can either juice it in a manual juicer (turn the handle) or put into a high speed blender with any other edible greens and a banana for flavour and whip up a smoothie for first thing into your tummy in the morning.

Do that for a period of time and see how your health and well being improves.

This time of the year the wheat grass should be grown in a full sun situation but in summer best in a morning or late afternoon sun situation outside.

It will come again but second cut is not as sweet as first cut.

Always plant up another tray or batch when you first start harvesting so you have a ongoing supply of the best goodness that Nature can provide.

5000 signatures to save Hutt Birthing Centre National List MP based in Hutt South says his petition to save the Te Awakairangi Birthing Centre at Melling in Lower Hutt has just clicked over 5,000 signatures.

“In just a few days more than 5000 people have signed my petition to send a message to the Government that it is unacceptable that Te Awakairangi Birthing Centre at Melling closes down because of a lack of government support.

“The Birthing Centre has only been open since 2018 and is likely to fold unless the Hutt Valley DHB swallows its pride and accepts that choosing to birth at the Birthing Centre is a legitimate choice by Hutt women.

“Funding should flow from where a woman chooses to give birth, not the ideological diktats of a District Health Board which would rather see a Birthing Centre close and put more pressure on an already stretched hospital maternity unit.

2. Add 2 skinless chicken legs, fat removed, and push them under all the other ingredients so that they are completely submerged. Cover with the lid and chill in the fridge overnight.

3. The next day, cook on Low for 6 hrs until the chicken and vegetables are really tender.

4. Stir in the the chopped leaves of 30g coriander just before serving over rice.

Cairns conjures childhood memories A large piece of my childhood is pulling for Chris Cairns to make a miraculous recovery from his heart issues which currently see him fighting for his life as I write this.

It was widely reported that Cairns, 51, suffered a heart attack in Canberra last week, resulting in an aortic dissection - a rupture of the aorta.

He has since been transferred to Sydney where he has undergone further surgery.

The 51-year-old has been living a life of obscurity in Canberra since he was found not guilty in 2015 of

lying under oath about match-fixing in a 2012 libel case.

The prosecution argued Cairns cheated at cricket and built its case on testimonies from McCullum and disgraced New Zealand batsman Lou Vincent.

In two London court cases, Cairns has never been proved guilty of match-fixing.

Still, the court cases appear to have taken a toll on his reputation in cricket circles and it’s meant not much has been heard of from arguably New Zealand’s best all rounder

in history.

In his prime, Cairns was a worldclass match-winner with both bat and ball.

A fierce competitor, his six-hitting ability was rarely equalled in the 1990s and early 2000s and he was an early prototype for the modernday power twenty20 cricketer.

When Cairns had the bat in his hand, 10-year-old me felt any game was winnable.

Now, there were plenty of times where that power-packed potential fizzled and Cairns departed the

crease early but the anticipation of seeing something few others could do made him a must-watch.

His unbeaten 102 in the 2000 Champions Trophy final against India was a career highlight as was him batting on one leg to assist Nathan Astle when he was blitzing England for 222 in a test match at Jade Stadium.

It was appropriate he wore No 6 because often it was six and/or out.

His bowling was good enough to open the attack but thrived in a first-change role.

His style of cricket is the missing link of New Zealand’s phenomenal current-day team.

Kane Williamson does not have a world-class all rounder to call upon.

Cairns, in this era, could have seen the Black Caps win a 50-over World Cup or two.

With Cairns based in Canberra, cricket in this country has lost intellectual property and that is a shame, regardless of how you feel about the man.

Here’s hoping for a speedy recovery for Cairns, 51 is far too young.

The Undertakers fell to a narrow defeat away to Upper Hutt. Pasifika put 6 past Karori in a convincing 6-4 win. Pasifika Originals knocked league leaders Eastbourne off top spot with a 2-1 win meaning they can clinch the title with a win next weekend. The OC’s walked away from Endeavour
