Santa speaks out By Glenise Dreaver and Megan Connolly

Santa yesterday took time out from directing the sleigh-loading for that vital journey from the North Pole on December 24. “There’s a knack,” he said, thumbing through the 189 pages of the Health and Safety At Work Act 2015 (updated 2017). Nothing on sleigh loading, though he pointed out that the Wikipedia guideline of about 60 per cent of the load in front of a trailer was also a Good Idea for sleighs. Continued on page 2. A sleigh-load of Southland swede turnips Continued from page 1. One of this year’s most popular presents, fortunately, doesn’t take up too much weight. It’s the Harry Potter Invisibility Cloak, requested by many parents, Santa says. “I’ve had to break the news that it’s an optical illusion. “You need an app to make it work, and even then your children won’t temporarily disappear while they’re wearing it,” he said. “The odd parent seemed a bit disappointed.” As well as presents for the

good children here - and the grown-ups too - he packs a few Southland swede turnips. (They’re a lot weightier than supermarkets’ limp plastic imitations. A lot.) “Organisers of the Coast Road Cleanfill will all get a swede on Christmas morning,” Santa promises – “Perhaps two. Or three.” Santa is still estimating how many swedes each for the organisers of Housing New Zealand. “Lots!” “As for our new Mayor,

Campbell Barry, he’ll be getting a shiny Mayoral chain instead of swedes in his stocking on Christmas morning. “Block Vandal will be getting a whole box of new paints and my most flattering selfie... you know, just for reference in case he needs inspiration. There will be no swedes insight for organisers of the new Shared Pathway that opened in May, Santa adds. “Maybe just a new pair of sneakers and a Fitbit.” “I asked Mrs Claus to explain

why the Shopping Mall on Queen Street hasn’t changed, but I had to block my ears after the first couple of sentences.” “Someone somewhere has to get a turnip or three!!!” But, he says, there are so many good people, out there – open-hearted, open-minded, generous and thoughtful, that he has no words, only his thanks on behalf of the rest of us. “And Merry Christmas. Happy New Year to you all,” he says.

Youngsters visit Santa The very jolly and happy Santa Claus has been visiting the Community Hub Library for the last week, with more visits to come. Youngsters lined up for their opportunity to whisper their deepest and most secret Christmas wishes into his ear while adoring parents made sure their little ones were smiling for a picture. No trip to visit Santa Claus is complete without lollies and candy canes which he was happy to dish out. It is lucky that the Library has good air conditioning otherwise Santa decked out in his finest attire of the North Pole, might feel the heat of Wainuiomata’s summer. Santa will be returning this Friday between 3.30pm and 4.30pm. RIGHT: Kasen Ritchie and Levi Wrathall sat on Santa's knee last week and told him all their secret wishes. Photo: Megan Connolly

Katie is the Dux

Graduating student, Katie Attwell, is the 2019 Dux of Wainuiomata High School, having also received Dux of Year 11 in 2017. “I’m so happy,” she says. “I a m ext remely goal-or ientated so I am very happy when it works out.” For her final year, she studied all academic subjects including physics, chemistry, biology, calculus, statistics and English, she says. “I’ve always enjoyed art and music but I’ve always been better at academic subjects,” she says. Katie says the secret to success is planning and practice tests. “I like planning, making a plan and sticking to it,” she says. Her advice for the incoming Year 13 students would be to do

lots of practice tests and exams. “Academically speaking, I’ve almost never gone over my notes, always learning through practice,” she says. “Familiarise yourself with that format.” With each subject, she would do over four or so practice tests before her mock exams and final exams. Katie has already been accepted into Otago Un iversit y to st udy health science and become a doctor. Even as a child she always knew she would find herself going into a medical profession. “I remember when I was eight years old, my aunt was a nurse so I learnt the word ‘orthopedic surgeon’. I would talk every day about wanting to be one but I didn’t know what it was,” she laughs.

inbrief news Reassurance for enrolments Following information relayed at the Transitional Housing Consultation, Wainuiomata Primary School would like to clarify that they will be taking enrolments for 2020 and beyond. Principal Allison Burdon says: “We would love to have more students and have plenty more space.” “There are places at all levels,” she says. The school welcomes all new students and their whanau, and have no enrolment zone. School term returns on February 7, 2020, and enrolments can be made at any time.

Progress on Fixing the Airport Flyer

Wood Street housing response Following the information that Wood Street would be receiving 44 transitional homes in 2020 from Kainga Ora, the street residents have been expressing their concerns around the lack of consultation and support for whanau. Although all of the residents are positive in the support of the housing, there are several unanswered questions surrounding the transitional and temporary models to go on the land. Last Wednesday evening around 140 residents attended a drop-in information session, organised by Kainga Ora, at Wainuiomata Primary School.

3

A spokesperson for Wood Street, Sam Bason, says that a group attended the session with their questions prepared. “It went well. We give them credit, they did listen. Everyone kept calm,” he says. Many of the questions were around the lack of evidence that purely transitional housing developments work, the absence of support available for whanau and the lack of employment opportunities in Wainuiomata. Street resident Moewaka Coffey says: “There is a broke equation here.” “There will be people with very high needs in desperate

situations, so the big question is will they get the support they need? “Not a single Wood Street resident I have talked to is against the addition of housing,” he adds. Residents of Wood Street, as a whole, have agreed that only transitional housing is not fully beneficial to the community but a mixed model of rentals, owned and transitional can fully support local whanau. Kainga Ora spokesperson says it has been a good opportunity to hear more from the community about this development, and how they can make sure it works well for the residents living in the

proposed new homes. “We’re reviewing the feedback we have received and we’ll provide a considered response to the community on that feedback, and we will be in touch with residents about hosting another information session soon. “So we can get people into warm, dry homes during winter we’re moving quickly with the planning for this development. “We acknowledge the speed this is happening can be unsettling for some people and we’re committed to keeping the community informed and updated at every step as this important work progresses,” a spokesperson says.

MP for Hutt South Chris Bishop is pleased by the news from Regional Council Chair Daran Ponter that the Council is working with the Airport to get the Airport Flyer service back on the real-time information boards and using Snapper again. “Under questioning at Parliament’s Transport Committee, Mr Ponter confirmed that the Regional Council’s preference was for the Flyer to accept Snapper, and appear on Metlink’s real time information boards so people know when the bus is coming. “He confirmed that the Council is talking to the Airport about making that a condition of the tender when the Airport goes out to the market next year (the current Flyer contract, held by NZ Bus, expires mid next year). “This is great news for the Hutt. Hundreds of people have signed my petition to “Fix the Flyer”, calling for exactly what the Regional Council is talking to the airport about. The Flyer is a great service for the Hutt but it has degraded in the past year because people don’t know when the bus is coming, they can’t swipe their snapper card when they get on the bus, and the service reliability has declined.” “I’ll now be talking to the airport about making sure they make this a condition of the tender next year.” “This is good progress on fixing the flyer!”

A message from the Mayor

Christmas wishes from Keri at Hutt CC Merry Christmas to the Wainuiomata community. I hope you all have a peaceful time with your loved ones and a special wish to those who are experiencing loss or hardship. Thank you all for your kind and generous support and I look forward to seeing some exciting progress for 2020.

I’d like to thank everyone in Wainuiomata for your support throughout 2019. Last October, it was the privilege of my life to be elected to serve as your Mayor. The result delivered a clear mandate for change and for Council to become more accountable to you, its ratepayers.

I’m looking forward to 2020. The Mall redevelopment will transform Wainuiomata’s town centre, and we will be working closely with Progressive Enterprises to make the most of this opportunity. As you will all know, Wainuiomata is experiencing strong housing growth. While this is positive, we

need to make sure that we have the infrastructure and amenities to support this growth - this will be a focus of mine as we head into 2020. Finally, on behalf of everyone at Hutt City Council, I would like to wish you all a safe and happy holiday season. See you in the new year.

A message from the Community Board Christmas cheer at Hub Head along to the Community Hub Library to spread the Christmas and holiday cheer. Until Friday, December 20 there will be Christmas themed stories at 4pm, perfect for excited tamariki. This Saturday, December 21, from 2pm to 3.30pm you can make and decorate Christmas cards for the whole whanau. If you’re passionate about science, or you would like to make a mess, Splashy Science will be on from 2.30pm to 4pm on Friday, December 20.

Kia ora koutou, the Wainuiomata Community Board would like to wish everyone a happy Christmas season and a fantastic New Year. Prior to the election, the Community Board urged Hutt City Council to declare a Climate Emergency and advocated for a moratorium to halt further extraction from water aquifers within Lower Hutt for water bottling purposes. We listened to concerns around the Significant Natural Areas, the Queen Street reserve and the Wainuiomata Cleanfill. In June, the community opened Te Hikoi Ararewa (The Wainuiomata Hill

Shared Path) - a project that was supported by successive Community Boards. We have also had the opportunity to support local community groups with funding for events and projects, such as Christmas

in the Nui. In October, you elected a diverse membership who are ready to listen and advocate for local residents. We look forward to working with you all and invite you to like

and follow our Facebook page to keep informed about our work. You are also welcome to attend our first meeting for 2020 on Wednesday, February 19 at 7pm at the Wainuiomata Community Hub Library.

Fitzroy Tavern stays until official notice The the news recently there has been talk of a hosuing development on the land where local icon Fitzroy Tavern stands. Hayden Wilby, the owner of the Fitzroy Tavern, says that he is not worried about the future of the Tavern just yet. “Until the landlord gives official notice, it is not worth

worrying about,” he says. “It could be in two years, five years, 10 years. I have been here 10 years and they have been saying it for that long.” Even though the future of the Fitzroy may mean relocating one day, Hayden is not worried about what that will mean for the tavern just yet.

“We will just take every year as it comes and look forward to celebrating our 50th year of trading next year,” he adds. Recently Hayden crunched some numbers to round up the huge year of business. The Fitzroy served 1,474 $6 senior lunches, 8,477 soft drink glasses, 7,345 quarts of tui and

served 84,550 customers, as of last week. Not to mention 16,037 steaks sold this year, with the kitchen being open only two nights a week. The most played song of the year was 1976 classic ‘You Sexy Thing’ by Hot Chocolate. “It shows that we’re busy. A

place where people can come, chat and be in a welcoming atmosphere. It is somewhere people can go,” Hayden says. “If we were to go, people would notice. We’re a meeting place. “When it comes to us moving, until there is anything official, there is no reason to worry,” he says.

South Korean students visit primary school Wainuiomata Primary School has had some special students visiting for the last two weeks. 21 students aged 10 to 12 from a sister school Sanui Elementary School in South Korea took the 11-hour flight to New Zealand two weeks ago to experience how kiwi pupils spend their lives and days at school Accompanied by their principal Mr Yun Seongcheol, teacher Youngeun Ham and translator Kim Minkoo, the students jumped straight on the bus and headed to school camp in Forrest Lakes for their first week.

Already it was a culture change as these youngsters live in a city and have grown up in high rise buildings. At camp, they went kayaking, horseriding and what was the most surprising scary addition, firelighting. School in New Zealand is very different for the students, agent and translator Kim Minkoo says. “During break times they run up to me not sure what to do,” he says “They’re surrounded by nature here and it is much quieter. “In Korea, students are used to be lectured to by

teachers. Here, teachers give the students the ‘how to’ and motivate them to achieve.” Initially, students were quite shy, he adds, but soon they began playing with each other. The principal of Wainuiomata Primary, Allison Burdon says she is very impressed with how the exchange students settled in. “I’m really impressed with the friendships they’ve formed. It is like they have been here forever,” she says. This is the second time the sister school has visited Wainuiomata Primary, visiting two years ago only for five days.

Shakira marches to success Shakira Abel-McEwen recently competed in the marching championships in Napier with the Glennette Marching group and came back with a gold and a silver medal. As the only Wainuiomata youngster in her seven to 12year-old team, Shakira is very proud of her achievement. “I felt joyful because my team won,” she says. This was Shakira’s first year competing in marching and trained intensely for the competition. “She practised everywhere, even at home,” mum Elle Abel says. The team competed against 11 other marching groups from around the country. “I was nervous beforehand but when we were heading there we listened to music on the bus,” Shakira says.

Merry Christmas Thanks for your support in 2019

There are a lot of things Shakira enjoys about marching but the hardest part has been learning the technical aspects, she says. “Hand grips were hard.” Currently Shakira is train-

ing to head away for Nationals which will be happening next year. Her younger sister, Gia, is also a keen marcher and hopes to one-day rise up the marching ranks.

Swings added to Queen Street trees You’ll be swinging your way into the New Year with five new swings installed around the Community Hub area. Love Wainuiomata is focused on working with our community’s vision of making Queen St feel like home, Esther King says. “Having play opportunities is

a big part of that, and swings are classic backyard fun right here in the heart of town. Swinging is also so great for kids’ brain and motor development.” Love Wainuiomata put a call out on Facebook for an arborist and got connected with DanJackson and his team at Wilding Wood Management Ltd who’ve

put these five swings in. “This means our community can play safe, and the trees are looked after too,” Esther says. “We’re so appreciative of their expertise and generosity, and the swings have been an instant hit with all ages.” The Jackson family has been living in Wainuiomata since

1845 and is one of the original settlers of Coast Road. Eight years ago, during his work for Hutt City Council, he planted the trees at the end of Queen Street on the right-hand side. Dan works in the community doing a lot of ‘tree work’ meaning that the swings have been

installed safely for youngsters to use and with the safety of the trees in mind. “We’ll keep following up and checking on them every couple of months and make sure they’re not damaging the trees,” he says. The swings are best suited for children, Dan adds, and just be cautious not to overload them.

It was beginning to look a lot like Christmas on Sunday night for the Christmas in the Village event. Although the weather was stormy, the atmosphere was bright, positive and, of course, festive. Christmas carols were sung out across the street while local artists had their crafts on display, children played the Elf on the Shelf treasure hunt and pin-the-nose-on-the-reindeer. No Christmas celebration is complete without lollies, which were handed out by the one Hadley and Finn Butchart were collecting donations for Block Vandal. Magical fairies take over the garden It was a magical evening at the Fairy Garden, located at the end of Queen Street, for the final Love Wainuiomata pop-up kai event on Friday. Not only were there sweet treats hidden among the plants but also twinkling fairy lights spread across from the wishing well to the corner of Harcourt’s building. The stormy and windy weather helped the lights dance across the sky. The fairy garden has undergone several makeovers this year. Fairy rocks have been painted and added, magical ornaments have been hidden and hopscotch has been

painted. The newest addition is to the wishing well which has had a new roof added by a local family who anonymously wanted to help. Esther King from Love Wainuiomata says “They’ve done an amazing job and we’re so grateful for all the work and love they’ve put into this. “It makes such a difference because you can see it from most of Queen Street making it a wonderful beacon that invites children to come and play, and use their imagination.” “We also got generous as-

sistance from Mitre 10 Mega Petone and MMS Group NZ Ltd to make it possibly,” she says. Over the year, Love Wainuiomata has been hosting fun free ‘& Kai’ events for locals to engage with while they wait for their kai. Keep an eye out on Love Wainuiomata online page for updates on when the ‘& Kai’ events will return and what they will be each night. SPORTS TALK With Jacob Page

Foster the safe play It’s apparently a new era for the All Blacks - just with a familiar old face. The All Blacks have gone the easy route by picking Ian Foster as their coach. After four years as Steve Hansen’s under study, it was now or never for the former Chiefs coach and so it will be. He beat out the people’s (and

mine) favourite, Scott Robertson for the job. Robertson will now stay with the Crusaders for the foreseeable future. Foster has had minimal success as a head coach at the Chiefs - just one final in which they were thrashed. That won’t really matter now as he will have the best cattle but a tricky job in front of him.

Unlike Steve Hansen in 2011 when he took over from Graham Henry, Foster must usher in change. Hansen came in with largely the same players, after a World Cup win with the demand of same again placed upon him. Foster comes in with the stench of the 2019 World Cup failure on him, at least by association. He has a fan base that can feel

change was needed and it’s a group of supporters who clearly classify him as part of the old guard. The appointment is a tick in the box for continuity and that has been a major factor in the All Blacks’ success over the past decade. The bold choice would have been Robertson, but the selection panel, unlike the players on the field, played this one predictably

and safe. There is no doubt the country will support and fans will not turn on him immediately, but if standards are not maintained and victories recorded, then there will not be as much leniency from a potentially rabid public. It may be a dream job but there will be no real honeymoon period for Ian Foster.

Cricketers at top pre-Christmas In the last game before the festive break, the Wainui Premier Reserve team had a second timed cricket win putting them top of the table before Christmas. Playing Easts at Kilbirnie Park, Wainui batted first and were in full control at drinks reaching 120 for 3. Big contributions from skipper Justin Morgan 79 and Tim Wilson 53, helped Wainui reach 217 at the

break of innings. Although happy with the score, it could have been greater for Wainui but a lower-order collapse saw them lose their last five wickets for six runs. In reply Easts started well, being only one down after 20 overs but the introduction of Jordan Rangikauhata 4-31 and Saikat Saihoo 3-25 turned the game in Wainui’s favour with a flurry of

wickets. Easts were 123-9 but with a stubborn last partnership of 77 the game was starting to become quite even until a superb run-out gave Wainui the win by 17 runs. With Wainui Premier Reserve being the only team to earn 2 wins from 2 games in this big points round, they jump clear in their grade. After being in a dominant position after the first day, Wainui

2nds had to settle with a draw against Easts. Being 161 behind in the first innings, Easts were determined to play no risk cricket, turning down easy runs and generally playing defensively. The tactic paid off as they batted 81 overs, losing only five wickets and although Wainui tried many bowlers, they couldn’t bowl Easts out.

Wainui 2nds sit 3rd in the grade after the result with the top three teams well ahead. In the 20 /20 grade, Team Brownie could only manage 102 all out against Taita at Fraser Park and Taita reached the total four wickets down in a comfortable victory. Wainui Premier Reserve is back at Bryan Heath against Naenae on January 11, 2020.
