‘Hoops’ mean a lot to school Continued from page 1 The teachers, students and families had the launch of the new basketball hoops, which were donated by Capital Zone Basketball Trust and supported

by Pelorus Trust.

Arakura School is the first Hoops in Schools recipient in the Wellington Region.

I interviewed Miss Talbot, who is a junior teacher at our school.

She is a basketball athlete and grew up on a basketball court, watching her parents and sister play the game that she loves.

She played for Capital Swish (Wellington Women’s basketball team) and her manager was Damien Ekenasio.

He now works for Capital Basketball, so Miss Talbot approached him for hoops at Arakura School.

Miss Talbot thinks that not having hoops at a school is not an option and wanted hoops for community use also.

We want our community to appreciate our school.

The launch day was really exciting for our students and I know this because people were shooting hoops, encouraging kids to have fun and faces were filled with joy.

In the future, I hope that new people who start at Arakura School enjoy playing basketball, just like I am, in my last year as a Year 6 student at our school.

Analyst’s email on the mark to prevent children spreading COVID The analyst at the Ministry of Education who pointed out the risks to our school children because there is no compulsory mask wearing at school is right.

They should be applauded for taking a stance. The Government has failed its citizens by not mandating maskwearing. A high-quality well-fitting N95 or P2 facemask is the best protection you can have against infection by COVID-19. There is significant scientific evidence to support this.

But for some reason, our decisionmakers aren’t taking that evidence on board.

Instead, they are limiting themselves to wishy-washy statements that people “may” wish to keep wearing masks and that individual schools can make their own rules around maskwearing.

That’s not good enough when

we are still in the middle of a global pandemic, and more COVID variants may be yet to come.

Now that we know the borders are re-opening to all from July 31, this is even more important to keep up levels of protection.

That protection from a N95 or P2 facemask will continue to be vital against COVID variants, as well as against the seasonal flu and other viruses that will be making their way through the re-opened borders with our returning citizens and visitors.

Our leaders also have to address the misperceptions about masks – a cloth mask is next to useless against viruses, and even the blue surgical masks are not that effective either. To be properly protected, people need to wear a certified P2 or N95 quality mask

that fits their face well.

It’s understandable that many people have a desire to “go back to normal” – the way it was before all this pandemic stuff – but that isn’t the reality we have to deal with. COVID is a serious threat to our nation’s wellbeing.

While many may only have mild symptoms, it is still a serious illness with potential long-term effects that we still don’t know much about.

We have a responsibility to limit the spread of the disease as much as possible – and that means mask wearing.

It’s especially important for the younger members of our country – they’re vulnerable, many haven’t been vaccinated yet. Their schooling is already disrupted with lockdowns, and now they are either off sick themselves or

their teachers are.

And that flows on into the workforce – most people who have been off sick with COVID reckon they caught it off their kids!

Our leaders should be doing what they can to ensure that the best protections are put in place.

We achieved better than 90 per cent vaccination through good efforts, and now it’s time to do the same with masks.

Masks with P2 or N95 ratings which are face-fitting and filter out COVID virus particles by definition need to be widely used to ensure people stay protected during the Omicron outbreak.

Peer reviewed research clearly advises P2 or N95 level respirator masks are critical to prevent the spread of COVID, especially the Omicron variant.

Wainuiomata Town Centre upgrade continues While the weather was behaving last week, the footpath on the Queen St Reserve side of Queen St was poured.

The car parks on the Fitzherbert Road end are ready to go and construction has moved across the road.

This project will develop the Wainuiomata Town Centre area to better connect the fast-growing suburb to shops and services, while creating opportunities to engage with Wainuiomata’s identity.

Having the development plan approved back in 2016, the project is planned to be completed by March 2023. It is split into four stages to ensure Queen Street remains open for people to access local businesses

during construction, both on foot and vehicle.

Work was planned to begin late March 2022 but Covid-19 and global supply chain issues have caused delays to deliveries of paving which are now expected in May. The beginning of Stage One will now begin after this delivery. From March the Project team and building contractor have been looking at other aspects of the project to progress.

Junior netball grading Wainuiomata High School Junior Netball had their second weekend of grading games in the Netball Hutt Valley Secondary Schools competition. Junior games are played at Taita College Courts, Taita. The three teams competed well winning 4 of their 5 games. “The teams are just happy to be out playing and having their families out supporting is fantastic,” says WHS 4 coach Olivia Sisley.

A stolen excavator was used to ram raid a Wainuiomata service station on Monday night.

Despite the use of force, nothing was taken from the BP petrol station.

Police were alerted to the burglary

just before 2.30am on Monday on Wainuiomata Rd. Police staff, including a dog handler, were in the area soon after however, they were unable to locate any offenders at the time.

McCullum pick a bold, calculated gamble There is never any guarantee a new coach with fresh ideas will work but English cricket has taken a step in the right direction by making Brendon McCullum their new test coach.

The former Black Caps skipper has only ever coached T20 cricket so he is no sure-thing in this role, but the move is a bold one from the English, who have now entered a new era of their red ball history.

Let’s be honest, they couldn’t be much worse at the moment.

McCullum, 40, will take charge of the side - which has won just one of its last 17 tests - to replace Chris Silverwood, who was sacked after England’s 4-0 Ashes series defeat to Australia.

McCullum, along with coach Mike Hesson, changed the culture of New Zealand cricket from a bunch of on their day battlers to a global power in all three

formats.

McCullum is aggressive, tactically shrewd and competitive to the enth degree.

They are similar traits to New England test captain Ben Stokes, who now has the job by default with Joe Root stepped down.

Stokes was the only choice on the table, unproven in leadership but proven by his play on the field.

So essentially it’s two Kiwis at

the helm of England.

It’s hard to knock McCullum’s appointment because he’s a winner and brings the breath of fresh air England cricket has badly needed for some time.

McCullum does not fear the Australians and during an Ashes campaign he will find creative ways to make them uncomfortable.

He will learn on the job and could one day coach New Zea-

land, though there’s a long line of potentially Kiwi coaching successors after Gary Stead like Shane Bond, Daniel Vettori and Stephen Fleming.

From a personal standpoint, I’ll miss McCullum’s insights on commentary.

He is one of the few willing to put friendship aside and be critical and objective when needed.

Those attributes will serve him well in this tough new role.

Wainuiomata surge for Chatham Cup win

The Chatham Cup got underway on Saturday and if you love entertaining football then Wakefield Park was the place to be as Wainui travelled to face Brooklyn. It was the home side who struck first before doubling their lead twenty minutes later. Just before the break, two goals within a minute bought the scores level. Captain Josh Hinton rising high to head the ball home from a corner before Baxter King calmly slotted his shot into the bottom corner.

The second half began and Wainui took the lead for the first time in the

match when Adam Ross finished off a great move from down the left wing. Brooklyn never gave up and cheered on by their home crowd, they pulled it back level just five minutes later. The intensity picked up just as much as the rain did and with just five minutes to go, Adam Ross got his second of the game to put Wainui 4-3 in front. Brooklyn pressed for the equaliser but a solid defensive effort and a good display in goal from Adam Trott meant the game finished 4-3 to Wainui and sees them advance to Round 2.

In other games the Thirds travelled

to Te Whaea to face Victoria University where a Nikesh Gounder hat trick saw the lads bounce back from defeat to Miramar on Monday night to win 5-2. Roundballs got their first win of the season as they hosted high flying Miramar. In a close game, it was the lads from Wainui who came out on top with a 2-1 win. The Horns travelled to top of the table Tawa and unfortunately came out on the wrong end of the result despite their best efforts, losing 4-2.

In the Masters games, the Undertakers looked like they played a game of rugby when you see the

score line. 13 goals in this game but they fell just narrowly short as they lost 7-6 to Tawa. Pasifika made it four wins in four as they comfortably beat third place Wellington United 4-1. The OC’s travelled to Miramar and despite a goal to goalkeeper Dean Brown from the penalty spot, they were unable to add to their tally as they lost 3-1.

On Sunday the ladies side travelled to Boyd Wilson to face Victoria University on a wet and miserable day. Looking to extend their unbeaten run, it was a game that required another defensive effort

Late heroics warm Wainuiomata crucial win

Waimuiomata left it late for a gritty 23-22 win over the Upper Hutt Rams, in the Swindale Shield on Saturday.

A 14-man Wainuiomata won with a 79th minute dropped goal to replacement first five Justin Wilson.

Replacement Jimmy Grindrod had been red-carded in the 66th minute and Rams fullback Tynan Barrett had kicked his fifth penalty of the match to put the Rams up 22-20. It went from bad to worse for

Wainuiomata a minute later when No. 8 Teru Time was sin-binned so Wainuiomata were down to 13 players on the field for most of the rest of the match.
