Ngaio’s Charlotte Horner is determined never to go back to Wellington Hospital as a patient.

Having spent 99 days there from

June this year, the 16-year-old saw first-hand how hard the medical professionals were working inside the hospital’s walls as she battled anorexia nervosa.

Charlotte has now launched what

she has called “The Butterfly Project” in an attempt to raise $10,000 for the Wellington Childrens’ Hospital, where she stayed.

Charlotte raises funds after near 100-day stay Continued from page 1.

Charlotte was admitted on June 29 and became known as “The Butterfly Girl” because of how many she had scattered across her room during her stay.

“When I got discharged, I knew I wanted to give back because I became a recognisable face around the ward, I was shown true kindness by everyone I came across.

“I first started an Instagram page and began doing wall art sets by painting wooden butterflies and now I have t-shirts, hoodies, tote bags & keyrings, from these I’ve had over 100 orders already.”

Charlotte has already raised more than $2000.

The Year 11 student says she is going well in her recovery and has started basic training for rowing once again at Queen Margaret College.

“I realised I wanted my life back and rowing to me is like a family.

“I knew I didn’t want to deal with this for the rest of my life and that I needed to stop chasing whatever I was going after because it was going to kill me.

“I’ve done really well in my recovery since leaving and my goal to get fully back to rowing has been a big part of it.

“I have to give thanks to the staff at Ward 2 for putting up with me for so long, they were great.”

Charlotte says juggling her recovery, the fundraising and NCEA studies has been a positive.

“I love being busy and it’s been a good focus in terms of getting back into normal life because it felt like I was gone for three months,” she says.

Charlotte says she visited a toy in the hospital gift shop constantly during her stay.

On her final day, she purchased it as a keepsake of the experience.

“It was a mildly ugly toy and my family would always make fun of it, but it would stay day-after-day as other toys would be purchased or moved.

“It was a bit like me.”

“I just had to have it.

Snapper on Rail Pilot launched in J’ville Rail commuters in Wellington got their first taste of electronic ticketing with the launch of Metlink’s Snapper on Rail Pilot on the Johnsonville Line.

Over the next 12 months, passengers on the line will be able to pay their fares using a Snapper card at terminals installed in stations.

The pilot is a step towards the National Ticketing Solution, a standardised way of paying for travel on public transport across the country. ƿKƗUiu MP Greg O’Connor attended the launch at Johnsonville Railway Station and expressed confidence that commuters would benefit from the pilot.

“This train line is a vital link to the inner city and other suburbs for the people of my electorate.

They’ll now be able to move between the train and buses using Snapper, making their commute more convenient and seamless,” Greg says.

Metlink General Manager Scott Gallacher says the pilot represented the culmination of

work to improve the customer experience.

“Our customers want contactless payment for train passage, like they have for buses.

“We expect the pilot will show that an elegant, electronic solution like Snapper can be expanded to all trains and ferries across our network.”

Snapper CEO Miki Szikszai, says it signified progress towards achieving his company’s vision for Wellington.

“For more than a decade Wellingtonians have embraced using Snapper on buses,” Szikszai said.

“Wellingtonians have been telling us for some time that they want the high-quality and convenient customer experience of Snapper to pay for their rail journeys. We are delighted to deliver this experience with our partners at Metlink and Transdev, and look forward to receiving customer feedback during the pilot.”

Kereru aviary on the way for Ohariu Ohariu’s Wellington Bird Rehabilitation Trust is building a special flight aviary so that injured Kerernj have somewhere to recover and regain their strength to fly. The project is well under way and has already received several significant private donations.

For nearly 20 years, Wellington Bird Rehabilitation Trust (WBRT) has been operating a bird rehabilitation hospital located in 24 hectares of farmland in Ohariu, near Johnsonville.

The brainchild of Craig Shep-

herd, Founding Trustee, the centre is mostly self-funded with help from volunteers, donors and the community.

WBRT treats over 1000 birds a year, taking in all types of native and non-native birds who have been injured or orphaned.

This includes over 80 injured Kerernj brought in annually by the community (2020 data).

These big birds are muchloved and seen in increasing numbers in suburban areas, but unfortunately are often injured by cars, window strike, power

lines, and by predators such as rats and stoats.

As Craig explained in his interview with The Breeze morning show this week: “Keeping these big birds in limited spaces in our hospital is not optimal, as a key part of bird rehabilitation is the need to re-establish their ability to fly. The aviary will allow for greater numbers and a quicker recovery, and for us to better assess their suitability for release into the wild.”

“We are hoping the local

community can help us raise the final $10,000 so that we can complete the build early in 2022.”

Chairperson Andrea Skews says KRA, western ward City Councillor Simon Woolf and active local resident Bryce McClure started working on the project together in 2018 to restart the patrols, after the Karori community had identified

areas of concern around the need for local crime prevention.

The new patrol team has worked very hard to achieve accreditation and has raised sponsorship from local businesses and organisations to fund a dedicated patrol vehicle with signage, uniforms and equipment.

The patrol comes under Community Patrols NZ which is a national

organisation under NZ Police.

Community Patrols are organised and operated by their local communities and raise their annual operating expenses through local grants, sponsorship and donations.

All patrollers are vetted through NZ Police and have training provided. The aim is to prevent crime and reduce harm through the active presence of trained patrollers.

Council working to support hospitality sector Wellington City Council is putting together a package of support for the local hospitality sector in response to some of the challenges they are experiencing from COVID-19 restrictions.

Wellington Mayor Andy Foster says “the package includes free short-term pavement leases, special license fees held to reschedule a cancelled event, and potentially opening outdoor areas such as car parks, wide footpaths, and other parts of the city to facilitate outdoor dining.

“COVID-19 restrictions have hit the hospitality sector hard and added a layer of complexity to operating their businesses. In these ongoing and uncertain times, it is imperative we create as much flexibility as possible with innovative ideas to ease COVID-19 restriction pressures.

“The work of WellingtonNZ and our events sector, and our whole community commitment to maximum level vaccination, should ensure a prosperous and enjoyable Christmas and New Year for residents and our visitors,” says the Mayor.

The Council will process shortterm lease applications free of charge so businesses can expand

their tables onto the footpath outside their establishment.

Businesses that were granted a special alcohol licence for a one-off event which has been cancelled due to COVID-19 will have their fee held by Council for when they can reschedule the event.

Council’s Public Health Group Manager Helen Jones says the Council is investigating options for on-street dining on wide public footpaths, attached to a restaurant, café or bar, where people can sit down to eat.

“With summer coming we’re also looking to possibly convert parking spaces outside restaurants and bars into outdoor seating areas, and considering what other spaces in the city can be opened up to facilitate outdoor dining. These initiatives will supplement the number of tables available for food service and supports COVID-19 public health guidelines to be outside when socialising where air is circulating.

“Large restaurants and small mum and dad players across Wellington’s CBD and suburbs know their surroundings and how they could optimise their space. We’re asking them to come to us with their ideas for their outdoor spaces so we can provide advice on how to make it

happen within current legislation and health and safety guidelines,” says Helen.

The Council has put in place a project manager to specifically work with hospitality businesses to provide advice and guidance.

Councillor Simon Woolf, Chair of the PnjUoro HƗtepe Regulatory Processes Committee says the sector is working together.

“We know clusters of Wellington hospitality venue owners are working together to see how they can extend their premises out into the street,” he says.

Unless they are licensed, outdoor dining areas can only serve food, not alcohol as current Government legislation does not allow this. Getting a license can also be expensive and time consuming.

“There are some very innovative ideas happening around the country which we’re keeping tabs on. In Auckland, businesses are getting creative with their outdoor areas by bringing in hot houses for patrons to sit in outside their venues. A similar idea could be used in Wellington, but we would have to consider our slightly more changeable weather,”

adds Councillor Woolf.

Jeremy Smith from Hospitality New Zealand says the sector needs this support.

“Lockdown has been tough on hospitality, and we appreciate Council’s plans to help us utilise the areas surrounding our businesses to enhance outdoor dining and increase the number of seats available.

“We encourage Wellington bar and restaurant owners to contact the Council with their creative ideas for using their spaces to expand their businesses,” he says.

Transmission Gully Project update The Transmission Gully builder, CPB HEB Joint Venture is continuing to push to complete construction, but there is still plenty of work needing to be finished before the road can open.

Under the PPP contract, it is the responsibility of the contractor, Wellington Gateway Partnership (WGP) and their sub-contractor, CPB HEB, to deliver a road that meets the safety, quality and environmental standards agreed in the project agreement, and expected by the public.

These tests are important, not just to meet the contractual requirements, but so that there are no major issues that need to be repaired or redone after it’s opened, which could lead to frustrating closures for motorists.

There are 100 safety and quality assurance tests that the contract stipulates must be met before the road can open. There are also 45 consent tasks that WGP and the builder need to complete in order to meet the contractual requirements for road opening.

Work continues to try to get the Transmission Gully Project completed as soon as possible.

submissions have been received from the builder, of which 26 have been accepted by the Independent Reviewer as meeting the required specifications.

A total of 42 partial submissions have been made and 20 tests are yet to be submitted Seven of the consent tasks have been completed.

Of the 38 remaining consent tasks, 36 are underway and have been progressed to varying degrees, and two are not yet started.

The team will continue doing the road safety audit and will be driving through for another pre-opening inspection.

This will advise WGP and the builder of any safety issues that need to be ad-

dressed before the final road safety inspection just before the road opens.

CPB HEB has rescheduled the postponed northbound paving work at Linden to next weekend.

A date for the postponed paving for the southbound connection is still to be confirmed.

While the road may start to look finished, the safety, compliance and assurance tests still need to be completed for the road to open safely to traffic.

Once those standards are met, the PPP contract will move into the service phase - the 25-year maintenance and operations period, after which it will be handed over to Waka Kotahi at an agreed standard.

Last month, Wellington was the first city in Aotearoa to sign up to the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact, a global movement for sustainable urban food systems.

This month, Council funded food groups Seeds to Feeds and Growers of Wellington are hosting events and workshops around PǀQeke, and Wellingtonians will be able to visit some of the city’s best kept secret gardens on Community Gardens Open Day. Growers of Wellington is hosting workshops around learning food skills like composting, seed swaps, and growing your own edible mushrooms, and Seeds to Feeds has started its summer-long festival celebrating locally grown, naturally grown, community-building food.

Much of the produce comes from local Community Gardens, and Community and Neighbourhood Advisor Vondy Thornton says they are the hidden gems of the city.

“You can find them tucked behind bowling clubs and nestled in-between houses from Brooklyn to Karori, Mount Victoria to Miramar. They are amazing places for people to go and connect with others, or simply to take some time out to improve their mental health.

Divvying up Sparrow’s money!

Dear Editor I consider it absolutely reprehensible that the council voted unanimously to divvy up Malcolm Sparrow’s salary instead of appointing a replacement councillor.

It’s notable that the council asked Peter Gilberd, the next highest polling candidate in the 2019 election but when he declined, they should have gone to the next highest polling candidate, John Apanowicz.

So if they’re happy to ask Gilberd, why couldn’t they ask Apanowicz?

Is the reason because Peter Gilberd was a Labour candidate whereas Apanowicz was an independent?

Fran Wilde (Remuneration Authority chair) agrees that divvying up Sparrow’s money might be legally permissible but to me at least, shows that the councillors are more interested in getting more money in their pockets than in democracy.

Do they really think that the two Northern ward councillors will now do more work to cover Sparrow?

The real losers here are the Northern ward ratepayers and I hope they remember this at the elections in 11 months time!

Creative parking practices will soon be a thing of the past as Wellington City Council prepares to stamp out city-wide footpath parking, reduce transport emissions and make streets more accessible for all Wellingtonians.

“We’re working hard to create a city that’s even better for pedestrians to move around easily, so we need to take steps to prevent poor parking choices which have become increasingly common in recent years,” says Councillor Iona Pannett, Chairperson of the Council’s 3njURUR ƖPua Planning and Environment Committee.

“Parking on footpaths creates safety risks for footpath users, who are often forced onto the road to get around vehicles.

This is far from optimal if, for instance, you are pushing a pram or if you are in a wheelchair.

“Our approach to managing this situation supports both our zero-carbon strategy and the Let’s Get Wellington Moving vison of accessibility, shared streets and efficient local and regional journeys. In the coming months we’ll be sharing information to help Wellingtonians understand that parking on footpaths is both unacceptable and illegal.”

Cr Pannett says the Council will work

with communities to implement feasible solutions where possible.

“But as Wellington works towards becoming a net zero-carbon Capital by 2050, parking for private vehicles will increasingly become less of a priority.

“In the meantime, the Council understands some vehicle owners will need to explore different parking options, so we want to provide some time for them to find alternative solutions. For that reason, no changes to our ticketing practice will be made until early next year.”

From 1 February 2022 any vehicle parked illegally on a footpath may be ticketed. Earlier this year the Council revoked a footpath parking guideline from 2005 to reflect the city’s new Parking Policy which prioritises the safe, efficient movement of people, active and public transport over private vehicles and introduced a parking space hierarchy to prioritise the use of public road space.

Third thyme’s a charm Youthline for Wellington’s Hidden Wellington hits 50 year milestone Gardens Youthline Wellington is turning 50 this year. However, its birthday celebrations have been put on hold due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions.

Instead, the charity plans on celebrating its 50th birthday in the new year.

Friends past and present, along with current volunteers and staff, are all set to be invited.

Over 50 years, Youthline has grown beyond its traditional helpline by introducing text, webchat and email counselling services.

Youthline Wellington also provides youth development opportunities through its Youth Development Programme, Mental Health Peer Support Programme and educational visits to schools and communities in the greater Wellington Region.

Through its Ongoing Education Programme, Youthline Wellington is committed to providing support to volunteers and the wider community, along with one-off workshops.

Everything’s coming up roses for Wellington City Council’s apprentice gardeners as the Hidden Gardens Project kicks-off across the city this week.

In its third year, the Hidden Gardens Project showcases the works of apprentice gardeners who study for three years with experienced trainers, learning about what it takes to look after the beautiful gardens and parks in 3ǀneke.

Planning for their gardens began in November 2019, with each apprentice gardener choosing a theme and personally crafting their garden to fit it.

Themes range from a BBQ herb garden, a Victorian style garden, a ‘Women’s’ garden, and a 1970’s themed garden.

Mayor Andy Foster says this project not only highlights the amazing work of the apprentices but is yet another reason for all of us Wellingtonians to get out exploring new parts of the city.

“With the days feeling longer and generally warmer, this is a great opportunity for everyone to go searching around their city and visiting these fantastic gardens which are planted in our communal backyard.”

There will be activities and events on for different gardens throughout the month for everyone to get engaged, entertained and enjoy. Or, just bring some kai for a picnic, spend time in the space and soak up the beauty behind each garden.

As these gardens are hidden, Council will be posting hints about the whereabouts of these gardens on Facebook, Instagram and the website throughout the month.

Ohariu Valley Garden ramble

The 2021 Ohariu Valley Garden ramble will be held on Sunday 28th November 10 am to 4pm rain or shine.

The event will feature 11 fantastic country gardens of all sizes, as well as a farmers market at the historic Ohariu Valley Hall.

The event is in aid of fundraising for the upkeep of the hall which is 115 years old.

GARDENING THIS WEEK Christmas gardening shopping: By Wally Richards Christmas is getting very near with only about 6 weeks till Xmas week.

Many of you will have already started putting a lot of thought into what gifts they would like to give and some will have completed most of their Christmas shopping already.

Others like myself are still thinking what to give to someone that is so hard to buy for.

A gift that is perfect is one that brings pleasure to the receiver as well as the giver.

This means giving a gift that has really been thought about and often will have some personal input from the giver.

For example young children making something, or drawing a picture, to give to their grand parents are treasures to be carefully stored and enjoyed for years.

Perennial plants are like that, they keep giving for years making them excellent gift choices for loved ones and friends.

I know this because people will phone me asking about a plant that they were given in the past that is not faring so well and they need to revive it because it was a special gift.

Think about this; a young couple with a family are given an apple tree to plant on their section for Xmas.

Within a few years that tree is producing a great harvest of fresh, healthy apples for the family to enjoy. As long as that tree is providing an annual harvest the giver will be remembered, even from beyond the grave.

I know of roses that were gifts 30 to 40 years ago still producing an abundance of blooms each year given by a mother or grandparents, long passed but cherished in memory through the annual À RZHULQJ Fruit trees, roses or a specimen plant gift can make the giver, in a sense, immortal

for a long time.

This Christmas think gardening and the pleasure plus KHDOWK EHQH¿ WV LW FDQ KDYH IRU the receiver.

Besides you can contribute not only with your money but also with your Labour in making the gift more personal.

Here are a few ideas starting with a glasshouse either A-frame or lean-to; they come as kits and you can help put it together for the receiver. I recommend a glass, glasshouse as they will last for a life time and only need panes replaced if broken.

A glasshouse for a person or family that loves to garden creates a new dimension to their gardening.

It allows growing out of season tomatoes and capsicum, perfect for germinating seeds and striking cuttings, ideal for growing those more tropical plants that wont do well outdoors in your climate.

There is nothing better on a miserable winters day than to be pottering around in your nice warm glasshouse.

How about a raised garden for a elderly parent or a young family to grow vegetables in?

You can construct an ideal one on site using roofing iron and 100 x 100mm posts (painted to keep the chemicals sealed).

The structure just sits on the ground (best on concrete) it makes an excellent place to grow vegetables, once it has EHHQ ¿ OOHG WR WZR WKLUGV ZLWK organic waste and compost.

Next to consider is a compost maker and by far the best are the tumbler ones as they will convert organic waste to compost in the quickest time.

A worm farm is also another excellent gardening

gift producing worm casts DQG ZRUP SHH WR WKH EHQH¿ W of your gardens as well as recycling all kitchen green wastes.

A rose in a container makes a lovely gift and now is the time to purchase and pot up.

You need, one bush or standard rose, one container that is about 20 litres or more, a bag of compost, a punnet of trailing lobelia or alyssum.

Make sure the container selected is either straight up and down or that the top is wider than the base with no middle bit wider than the top.

(The rose has to be removed and root pruned every 2-3 years and if the top is more narrow than any other part you have to smash the container to remove.)

Fill the container with purchased compost to about half full and place some sheep manure pellets, blood & bone and Neem Granules before adding the rose removed from its bag or pot.

Plant the lobelia or alyssum around the edge so they will trail over.

Not only does it make it more decorative but the foliage helps reduce moisture loss from mix and they certainly let you know when the mix is drying out. Place the rose in a good light shelter spot outside till you are ready to wrap and give. $ ¿ QDO WRXFK FDQ EH VSUD\ ing the leaves with Vaporgard to make them really green and shiny.

Similar can be done with a fruit tree but then the container wants to be about 50 litres or more and instead of SODQWLQJ À RZHUV DURXQG WKH rim go for either a herb such as parsley, thyme or basil.

The fruit tree can be any variety you would like to give from citrus, feijoa, to pip or stone fruit.

James McDonald deserves Halberg nomination Is it time champion Kiwi jockey James McDonald got more mainstream credit for his achievements?

The 29-year-old has a compelling case for a Halberg nomination at the very least after his exploits during the Melbourne Cup Carnival at Flemington.

McDonald claimed 10 wins, the most-ever in the carnival, including the Melbourne Cup on Verry Elleegant.

McDonald’s 10-win week breaks his idol Brett Prebble’s record, cementing his spot amongst the great performers on the turf.

New Zealand best ever jockey Lance O’Sullivan says he is now this country’s best ever jockey despite his young age.

Like when Colin Meads gave Richie McCaw the nod for best All Black ever, that endorsement is good enough for me especially

when jockeys don’t hit their prime until closer to 40.

“They’re going to be talking about James McDonald in 50-100 years from now,” O’Sullivan said of McDonald when he spoke to national media.

McDonald has 59 Group 1 winners already in a career which is likely not even at the halfway mark.

Despite being a rugby, racing and beer society over the years, horse

racing has struggled to garner mainstream media attention on a regular basis.

Part of that, in my view, is horse racing’s inability to move with the times and encourage young people into the game. Along with the mistrust they have of mainstream media potentially caused by the public perception that the sport is secretive and hard to grasp when it comes to things that happen behind

closed doors.

There are plenty of horse racing fans of both codes in the media but somewhere there is a circuit break.

However, McDonald deserves a Sportsperson of the Year nomination. His record-breaking feat in Melbourne demands it and if he is left off then it would be a travesty.

He is the best thing horse racing has going for it even if he is now on a global stage.

College athletes honoured at annual awards

North Wellington secondary school athletes were amongst the winners at the College Sport Wellington awards night last week.

The event was moved online due to Covid-19 but there was plenty to celebrate.

Onslow College’s Arno Lee was named Diver of the Year.

Onslow College’s Sierra Bridgman was named Female Lawn Bowler of the Year while Johnsonville middle-distance runner Will Anthony was named Cross Country Runner of the Year.

Footballer of the Year was shared by two Onslow College athletes Pepi Olliver-Bell and Theo Ettema.

Onslow College’s Ryan Calvert was named Rower of the Year.

Samuel Marsden Collegiate’s Molly Player earned Swimmer of the Year honours.

Jade Otway, also from Samuel Marsden Collegiate was named Tennis Player of the Year.

Ayden Hammond joins Tuatara pathway Harriers shine at Newtown Park

Talented Wellington-raised right-handed pitcher Ayden Hammond is the latest player to secure a contract to be part of the inaugural Auckland Tuatara Pathways program for 2022-23.

The 18-year-old Hammond is considered one of the most likely young Kiwi baseball stars to chase a professional contract at the moment and he will boost his chances by being part of the Tuatara Pathways program that will see him work with Baseball New Zealand and Tuatara coaches while being assessed by Texas Rangers scouts.

Hammond, who grew up in Wellington, has played for the Howick Hawks in the Auckland Baseball League the last couple of seasons.

He’s a very talented sportsman

having been in the Scot’s College 1st XV since he was 14 and turned down a Black Sox softball trial to focus on baseball, rugby and rugby league.

“I’m rapt to be part of the Auckland Tuatara Pathways program,” Hammond said. “I would love to represent the Tuatara in the Australian Baseball League in the future and this opportunity will significantly help me achieve that dream.”

Baseball New Zealand coach Kris Richards has high hopes for him.

“Ayden has plenty of natural ability and if he dedicates himself over the next few years, he has the potential to go a long way in the sport,” Richards said.

Will Anthony was first in the under-20 category and finished fourth overall in a

time of 30:59.

Simon Angus’ debut 34:45 proved to be an impressive effort.

Nic Hankinson’s personal best time of 41:49 was also a highlight.

Michelle van Looy produced a solid 47:07.

Ryan Mackay completed the distance in 38:18 Sarah Bakker managed 48:53 in her first season.

Deb and Susannah Lynch went 1-2 in the National Challenge with non-platform shoes.
