Three former Onslow College students, all members of the school’s five-person senior girls’ rowing team, are due to leave Wellington in August. Their rowing expertise and performances at national level, along with excellent academic results, have won them fouryear scholarships to prestigious American universities. Continued on page 2. Top US colleges recruit NZ talent Continued from page 1. In August, Olivia Clark of Churton Park leaves to study computer science at Ivy League University Yale, and to join their women’s rowing squad. Constance Stirling is bound for the University of Miami to study finance, as well as row. Cox Ella Greenslade of Wilton, leaves for Washington State University later in August than her two friends. She will study psychology and human development, but will be a week late for orientation and placement tests. That’s because she is in

camp with the New Zealand Under 21 rowing squad. Olivia and Ella were approached by university representatives last year, while Constance selected several schools to investigate. One front-runner was in the Midwest but once she was there, it didn’t feel like a good fit. “You just know.” So she went on to Miami, where she was offered a scholarship. “But I didn’t just say yes immediately, because I had more places to visit.” The highly-ranked Miami easily won out over the others however. All three girls have there-

fore visited their universities and know they are making well-informed choices. “There are so many more opportunities at a higher level in America,” says Olivia. “In New Zealand you have to try to balance training and study yourself. There they do it for you.” “Yes. It’s crazy,” says Constance and Ella agrees. All three are also incredulous at the amount of resource US universities have for sportspeople who wish to study with them. Their scholarships cover not just their fees and accommodation and living expenses,

Generous gift helps right a wrong By Glenise Dreaver

There were smiles all round at Alex Moore Park on Saturday morning, when Johnsonville Rotary Club members turned up to present North Wellington Football Club president Grant Stephen with a cheque for $1000. The Rotary club donation is to help the club replace the defibrillator that was stolen earlier in June. While the insurance company agreed to cover the cost, there was still a $1000 excess to meet. The cabinet holding the defibrillator is also being revamped with Wellington City Council help. Once that is completed, a new defibrillator will be installed and both groups hope that the life-saving machine can be in place without undue delay. Grant is still coming to grips with the theft. “It’s nuts!” he says. “No-one can fathom why anyone would steal a defibrillator. “I would like to acknowledge though the support from the local community in general and the wonderful work that the Liverpool Football Supporters Club does to raise funds for these machines across our region. “They deserve all the assistance that people can give them.”

This quartet gathered at Alex Moore Park on Saturday for the formal handing over of a donation to help replace the park’s stolen defibrillator. At left is the man who signed the cheque Roland Van Praag, Johnsonville Rotary Club treasurer, with club president Pravind Singh, who is handing the cheque to North Wellington Football Club president Grant Stephen. Waging war on rats

Onslow book fair

By Glenise Dreaver

Jim Tait is a familiar face at local community and information days. A retired trade commissioner, Jim now puts his energies into fighting the battle against predators and restoring our native bird population. He heads up RAMBO (Rat and Mustelid Blitzing Otari) as well as Otari Predator Free, and Rodent Free in Wadestown. His regular contact with multiple local groups working on predator trapping means he has been able to collate results from 2016 to 2019, from backyard predator groups in Karori, Northland, Wilton, Wadestown, Crofton Downs, Ngaio and Khandallah as well as some groups trapping in local reserves. . “Over 10,000 rats were caught. This would be an under-estimate as I only had the results for about half the reserves in the western suburbs.” Backyard groups focus on rats, while predator control in the council reserves also catches other predators such as stoats, weasels and hedgehogs. Some large-scale groups operate in the surrounding hills and many individuals, schools and groups are doing their own small-scale predator control. It all means the local environment is becoming safer for the spillover of birds leaving the protection of Zealandia looking for new nesting sites, he says. And fortunately this area has been spared the explosion in predator numbers that has occurred nationwide in what has been a “mega-mast” year. In a mast, trees like beech s e e d p r o l i f i c a l ly, p r o viding sources of food for birds and predators alike. “Round here there aren’t many beech trees,” says Jim. “On the other hand we have had a long autumn and a warm-

Onslow College Rowing runs an annual book fair to raise funds to help with the upcoming season’s coaching and equipment expenses. This year it will be held at Onslow College on August 24-25 from 9am – 3pm on both days. There will be book bargains, as well as games, puzzles, a sausage sizzle and bake sale goods on offer.

Call for help with research As part of a Victoria University course, a group of students called Wellington Youth in Conservation have been researching what motivates young adults into partaking in conservation. They are looking for people who have previous experience with conservation or an extreme desire to partake in conservation and people who are between the ages 18-25. If you fit the bill then please have a go! The survey at https://vuw.qualtrics. com/jfe/form/SV_2nk6eV8cP4sJ1tP only takes about four to five minutes and all those who participate will be in to win a $75 Countdown voucher.

inbrief news Changeable weather The Met Service reports that the repeating pattern of passing fronts and lows that New Zealand has experienced over the school holidays is set to continue for what remains of them. MetService meteorologist Hannah Moes says that westerly winds in the New Zealand latitudes are pushing one low pressure system after another across the country, meaning more changeable weather. Another system is expected from late today, Thursday. Hannah adds that in between these passing weather systems we do see some clear skies, and ski fields have been appreciating the cooler temperatures and bouts of precipitation adding to their snow bases.

Council nominations open Nominations for councillors and Mayor for Wellington City Council open tomorrow, Friday July 19 and close on Friday August 16. New Zealand citizens, over 18, of all ethnicities and backgrounds, can stand. The 15-member council includes 14 ward councillors plus the Mayor, who is elected by the whole city. Tawa and Makara residents also vote for six community board members. Nominations are also open for the Capital & Coast District Health Board, Greater Wellington Regional Council, and the Hutt Mana Charitable Trust. An information evening will be held on Tuesday July 23 at 5.30pm on level 16 of the WCC offices at 113 The Terrace. No pre-registration is required.

Women building peace At the Johnsonville Community Centre on Saturday, representatives of Creators of Peace, Salaam Group and the Pan Pacific South East Asia Women’s Association hosted a TableTalk luncheon for 80 women ranging from 96 years old to two months. A Maori karakia opened the luncheon at which the women, from many cultural and religious backgrounds enjoyed making new friendships, wanting to strengthen these networks in the future. The nations represented included Peru, Singapore, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Philippines, Fiji, Egypt, Bengal and the US, as well as New Zealand. “The aim was to support our Muslim sisters, to create a space where new conversations and connections were made,” says spokesperson Glenys Wood. Shared experiences of peacebuilding and strengthening and linking communities were discussed. “We also remembered the

Safety move for homes The Government has taken enacted legislation to ensure that manufacturers and retailers find ways to make products safer and a Product Safety Policy Statement (PSPS) has been implemented. Minister Kris Faafoi says about 80 percent of new and existing household furniture in New Zealand is foam-filled, including lounge suites, some mattresses, and seats. “These are highly flammable when ignited and the foam can catch fire at relatively low temperatures, burn quickly and intensely, and emit suffocating poisonous smoke that can spread quickly through a home. “

Potaka-Kelly, community educator for St John, had a great rapport with the students and was able to engage them in ideas that were well suited to their age group. Even the youngest were fully engaged in identifying the emergency services and what they do. It was amazing to see the children’s mimes of being ambulances and fire engines at work. These courses have been run in a number of places and are always well attended. Having seen one in act ion , I ca n s e e why. These are basic life skills for all of us so it’s great to see students being introduced to these ideas at such a young age.

Prepared for disaster By Glenise Dreaver

Chris Moore holds the official title of Emergency Management Advisor/ Community Resilience with the Wellington Regional Emergency Management Organisation (WREMO). He says that the 14 Community Emergency Hubs in the Independent Herald’s circulation area are ready to be opened and operated following a major disaster. “We have provided the hubs with basic start-up equipment, a Community Emergency Hub Guide, and a VHF radio,” he says. However, he adds, there will be no official assistance at a hub during the initial phase following a major earthquake. “And there are no supplies, food, water or blankets stored there.” “Our communities are full of beds with blankets on them, and pantries with food in them. You can gather the things you need at the time by working with the local community,” he says. “We see this in every large emergency.” “What hubs do have includes a guide for how to coordinate the sharing of information, skills and resources in the community, and some basic equipment to get people started.” The VHF radio stored at each of the hubs allows, he says, for each hub to be connected to official response systems. No WREMO or council staff members will operate the hubs however. “They will

be opened and operated by local community members,” says Chris. “Our communities are full of capable people who solve problems every day.” “Each facility owner/manager has designated several people to be keyholders,” he adds. In an emergency, a designated keyholder will go down and unlock it, open the front door, and put the hub kit in a noticeable location. “The amount of time this will take will vary,” says Chris. “Some hubs might be open and operating within a few hours, whereas others might take a few days to be up and running.” The hub guide has been designed so that anyone who

is willing to help their community after a disaster, no matter how much, or how little knowledge they have on what a Community Emergency Hub is, can do so. “We do however run Community Emergency Hub exercises, which are where we run a simulation and get community members together to work through how their local Community Emergency Hub will operate after a disaster,” he says. “No emergency management training is required!”

The word community is used so often and in different contexts that sometimes it’s easy to forget what community service actually means. I had a great example recently when the defibrillator at Alex Moore Park was stolen. Without discussing the mentality of anyone who would do such a thing, I was heartened by the response of the Johnsonville Rotary club when I approached the newly installed president to assist financially to replace it. It was done quickly and now those vulnerable to heart issues can exercise and play at the park, secure in the knowledge that a machine is immediately available. Now that’s the sort of community that looks after its own, as do the many other service groups in the Ōhāriu Electorate, such as Lions. I encourage people to join their local service club; they’re always a great social bunch as well. I recently undertook a selffunded trip to Britain and Ireland, ostensibly to play cricket for the NZ team in the inaugural Parliamentary World Cup. We were slightly outclassed by the teams from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, but the opportunity to meet and promote NZ was excellent; their admiration for New Zealand was equally effusive between

our Black Caps and our Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s postChristchurch shooting response. These are places New Zealand needs friends as the power and trading blocs change, so profile is everything. And I also rode on a relatively new rapid transit system in Dublin which has revolutionised and modernised public transport there. Of course everyone now forgets there were massive objections when it was built, of the sort we are experiencing from the opposition here against similar proposals in Wellington and Auckland. I became even more convinced we just have to get on with it. The very dishonest claims being made in various places around tax proposals designed to modernise our transport should be ignored. Moaning and doing nothing is never an option. Ask our local service groups. PS. We’ll need all the positivity we can muster to get over the disappointment of that cricket finals loss, but again, the manner in which our lads fought and conducted themselves was heralded in Britain, and can only do us good in the post Brexit world UK willRoad, shortly find Unit the 2, 18 Moorefield Johnsonville themselves in. New books to empower others Altrusa International of Ohariu members have begun a project, Get Set For A Brighter Future, that will put over 250 brand new books into the local community. They are aiming to provide literacy resources to empower women and children to develop new skills, extend their knowledge, and understand the opportunities created through education. To further this aim, the club has purchased sets of non-fiction books that represent women in technology for local primary and intermediate school libraries.

As well, they have provided instructional readers for Linden Primary School in Tawa and sets of novels for the Arohata Prison Library Book Club. The international service club Altrusa was formed to build skills of women for the workforce and to develop their leadership skills. They meet at the Johnsonville Bowling Club on the second Thursday of each month between 7.30pm - 9pm. To find out more, you can go to the Facebook site https://www.facebook. com/altrusaohariu/

Former Labour supporter challenges Mayor Conor Hill of Wadestown finalised his resignation from the Labour Party on July 9. On July 10, he announced he would be entering the mayoralty race, challenging the Labour-endorsed incumbent Justin Lester. Conor, who has never been a councillor or run an election campaign, says he has been working on different projects on a contract basis, his most recent with the Ministry of Education, recruiting teachers from overseas. That ended in May and since then, he says, he has been working on his cam-

paign full-time. He’s critical of the current Mayor saying: “He declares a climate change emergency one week, and opens a petrol station the next. “He a n nounces a pro gramme to build 750 social homes but finds no money to pay for them, instead funding a Convention Centre. “Our city needs action, not just visions and soundbites. “I think strong action rather than empty statements are needed to fix our most pressing problems, which I see as housing affordability, our broken transport system and climate change.”

readers have their say... Find out the WORD on the Street. Question: How are you managing to reduce using plastics and other pollutants?

Chris Horwell, Johnsonville “I’ve been plastic-free for a while. I always line the bottom of the bin with paper then put it in the wheelie.”

Claire Coppersmith, Johnsonville “I always put a plate over leftovers instead of using plastic wrap.”

Guinever Malpass, Khandallah “One big thing I’ve done is changing the bin liners to compostable.”

Julie Foley, Churton Park “We’re two keen gardeners and we’ve always composted and been aware of what we throw out.”

Leanne Havill, Johnsonville “We recycle the Herald to friends with open fires. And at coffee bars I drink a coffee really quickly in a reusable cup instead of taking one away.”

Matt Robertson, Ngaio “We’re aware. We’re composting and have an energy efficient house. And we’re down to one car.”

EYE ON CRIME In Johnsonville a red Nissan Pulsar hatchback parked during the day in the carpark at a supermarket in Johnsonville Road was broken into. The front passenger window was smashed with a rock that was found on the seat of the car. A bank debit card and a packet of tobacco were taken from the middle console. A silver Holden Equinox stationwagon parked overnight in the driveway of a house in Lomita Road had its front passenger window smashed to gain entry. OUT&about

PHOTOS: Brian Sheppard

100 years of progress By Brian Sheppard

On July 15, the Newlands Paparangi Progressive Association (NPPA) celebrated a century’s service to its community by hosting a dinner at the Newlands Community Centre. Committee member Christine Davis explained that the NPPA was referenced in minutes of Makara County Council in 1919 but details of its activities in those early years are yet to be rediscovered. The NPPA did, however, produce the Newlands-Paparangi Times for 24 years from 1952, leaving good records of its activities in that period. President Jim Bishop acknowledged the NPPA’s partnership with the Nga Hau e Wha o Papararangi

marae and the Christian Assemblies Church, together with the continued support of the wider community and MPs and councillors. Together, they have in recent years achieved the establishment of a large community centre, a modern supermarket and, more recently, have come into the 21st century with the erection of a digital noticeboard and advertising display. Their current focus is on a resilience programme, to develop neighbourliness and cooperation across the community and to promote submissions for planning the development of the Newlands Park. The NPPA is clearly not resting on its laurels but working hard to support the community’s future development.

A fortnight ago I wrote about the increasing burden of new and increased taxes the Government is imposing on hard-working Kiwis.

Committee and guests celebrate the association’s century of service

Well they’ve gone and proposed yet another one. A poorly directed car tax that would strike another blow to people trying to get ahead. Despite the Government trying to dress it up as a costneutral subsidy on electric vehicles, it essentially boils down to a tax on people who cannot afford to change, or who don’t have alternatives. A family of five will struggle in a Suzuki Swift and you can’t fit many fence posts or PVC pipes in the back of a Nissan Leaf. Yet these are the sorts of people who will be hit hardest by the car tax plan. Associate Transport Minister Julie Anne Genter describes these as ‘small fees’, but for those already struggling with the cost of living, these are substantial costs.

Earlier this year, the Productivity Commission noted that “feebate” schemes hurt lower income earners more and that the single biggest boost to wellbeing for low income earners in recent decades was the accessibility of low-cost, used Japanese imports. The Government’s plan won’t help them. The previous National Government set an ambitious target of having 64,000 new electric vehicles registered in New Zealand by 2021. We also extended the exemption from Road User Charges for electric vehicle owners, which effectively operates as a subsidy worth $600 a year. Our policies saw the number of EVs on our roads increase from 1406 in May 2016 to 14,867 in June 2019 without penalising people. New Zealanders simply can’t trust the Labour-led Government when it comes to tax and this is another example of them trying to shoehorn in another sneaky tax grab.

Medsafe consults on plans to include allergens on labelling Medsafe, the New Zealand Medicines and Medical Devices Safety Authority, has opened a public consultation on plans to introduce new labelling requirements for non-active substances in medicines (excipients) which may cause a bad reaction, eg: allergies. Unlike foods, most medicines and related products are not required to list all the ingredients included in the medicine on the package label. Now Medsafe is

asking for people’s opinions on proposed changes to package labelling requirements. Medsafe’s Group Manager Chris James says changes to labelling is a really important step to ensure medicines are as safe as possible for all users. “The consultation is asking members of the public, healthcare professionals, consumer groups and industry whether a number of different substances should be included on medicine labels.”

“Some of those substances include egg and egg products, gluten, soya beans and soya bean products, tree nuts and pollen. There are a number of other substances listed in the consultation too,” says Mr James. “The Medicines Regulations 1984 already requires medicines and other related products to include any warning statements required by Medsafe, either on the medicine package or on an information sheet for patients.”

Hospital-grade imaging technology at Specsavers, Johnsonville Introducing the use of hospital-grade imaging technology, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), as part of every comprehensive eye exam at Specsavers Johnsonville will allow for earlier and more accurate detection of vision threatening eye diseases including glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease for residents. Specsavers are currently offering half-price eye examinations – but only until 24th July. Optometrist Partner Defini Tau’alupe-Tai says, “We want to eliminate avoidable

vision loss and blindness in Johnsonville and believe that everyone should receive a comprehensive eye disease screening as standard, not just those patients with clinical indications.” “Many customers don’t realise that an eye test is more than just checking vision and if you need glasses. While that is always an element, an eye test is actually an important health check that even people with good vision should have at least once every two years.”

It’s about care, dignity and best results when it comes to your dentures The Denturist has been providing quality and professionally made dentures for years. the Wellington region for consultation, treatment planning, implant placement and maintenance. But it doesn’t always have to be expensive work! We will look after you even if it’s just a small crack in the denture or a tooth came off the denture; they can usually be repaired while you wait. Consultation is free and there is no obligation.

with Jacob Page

So close, too close it hurts This loss is going to take some time. The Black Caps loss in the World Cup final will have Kiwis cringing over their drinks for years to come. To be honest, I fell asleep by the 30th over, not through lack of interest, just self preservation. We had moments where we looked like winners and losers in the match and even just in the Super Over alone. Facts remain that with three

runs off two balls required, New Zealand should have found a way to win the game outright. I’m comfortable in saying that England’s win feels a bit hollow in the fact that both teams scored 15 runs in that Super Over but for a superior boundary rule sees them victorious. Granted my team lost, but the rule seems a little weak for a team to win or lose the most important game of their lives. The lack of intent New Zealand

showed with the bat was the most frustrating thing. Winning the toss and batting was the most definitive thing they did all day. No batsman took it to the English attack and tried to make themselves a national hero. However, call it raw bitterness of the minutes after the game, no team should lose a final on a sub-standard rule. The players deserve a definitive winner after six weeks of the

competition. Play another Super Over, I want a definitive knock out victory, not a shady win on points. My biggest fear is that I’ll never see New Zealand win the World Cup. They can’t get any closer. The saying is, it’s only a game and it’s true. In the grand scheme of life, far worse things happen, but this one is entitled to sting for a while. I feel for Martin Guptill who

will unfairly be saddled with a large chunk of the blame. Yes, with the exception of one brilliant runout, he was a passenger all tournament but he did his best with that final delivery and hopefully in time, he will be forgiven and won’t be defined by this horror tournament for him. This is a terrible way to lose anything. Congratulations to the English all the same. It means as much to them as it would have for us.

Disappointing draw in exciting game By Grant Stephen

In the men’s Central League Football match at Alex Moore Park on Saturday both New World Newlands North Wellington and Miramar Rangers came away disappointed after their 2-all draw. Make no mistake, it was a belter of a game with action aplenty that did not disappoint the crowd. North’s goal keeper Sacha Nathu had an outstanding match and would be justified for putting in a requisition for a new pair of gloves. He stopped an amazing two penalties that left the Miramar striker holding his head in his hands on both occasions. Despite all the action, both sides only scored their first goals right on half time. Nathan Simes was there for Norths to put away another chance created in conjunction with the hard working Jesse Randall. Miramar scored the equaliser with a long distance wonder strike by Joel Stevens that could have been hit from the car park

and still would have gone in. Twenty one minutes into the second half Miramar’s Ollie Bassett scored up close when the North’s defenders failed to clear a simple ball and presented the opportunity on a plate. Barely three minutes later, at the opposite end of the paddock, North’s Ryan Worrall made no such mistake when gifted a hand ball penalty. In his last match for the club before returning to the UK, the 22 year old belted the ball into the back of the net to square up the match. The yellow card count was far too high for North Wellington with one player managing a double and earning an early shower just before the close of play. In other matches in the round, Stop Out were too good for Wairarapa United winning 4-2, Western Suburbs pipped Waterside Karori 1-0, Wellington Olympic overcame Lower Hutt 3-2 and Wellington United remain bottom of the table after travelling to play Napier City Rovers and losing 6-1.

Napier leads the league after 14 rounds with four matches still to play. Western Suburbs are a point

behind and the next six spots have a margin of only four points between them.

FREE skylight report/assessments of your existing skylight/s Skylight Specialists have been specialising in skylights for 25+ years. We have yet to come across a brand/make/type or configuration of skylight that we do not know everything about. Skylight Specialists is LBP (Government approved licensed building and roofing practitioners) , with 30+ years in the building industry and employ a highly skilled team which consists of trade qualified glaziers, roofers and builders. When we come and assess your skylight/s we will provide you with a free, no

obligation quotation. We will also provide you with a detailed report including photos that will include our findings and recommendations whether it be for general maintenance, repairs or replacement. At this time of year everyone is concerned about insulation of their homes, trying to keep warm and retain heat. Unfortunately, skylights are often overlooked, even when they can be sometimes the main factor of heat loss. Older skylights are sometimes full-time venting without the homeowner even being aware of this, which is no

different from leaving a window open 24/7. Others are only single glazed or just plastic. By upgrading to double glazing you can retain up to 70% more of your heat. A lot of skylights we come across is simply a piece of glass glued to the roof structure of your home – This is by far inadequate for many reasons including thermal properties and condensation issues, as the moisture has no where to go but get absorbed by the structure of your home. We will assess the entire skylight including the flashings (roof flashings

are what connects the skylight to your roof and keeps all watertight). This will cover if you have adequate condensation channels, drainage, seals, condition of flashings, thermal properties and of course longevity of the skylight/s and the surrounding areas.  So if you’d like to add a lot more light into your home and want the job done well, contact them for a FREE aSSESSMENt on 04 938 0721 or 027 595 4448.
