Weet-Bix kid

By Megan Connolly

Wainuiomata is now home to its very own Weet-Bix kid. Nine-year-old Zaria Simpson is one of six faces on the boxes and represents Wellington City’s TRYathlon star. The boxes were released in late last year so Zaria says she’s had some time to adjust to her newfound fame. “It makes me feel a bit famous because I’m all over New Zealand,” she says. “I have heaps of family who live far away so they get to see me often.” Continued on page 2. Zaria Simpson is famous. Her face can be found on Weet-bix boxes in Wainuiomata and around the country. Photo: Megan Connolly

Zaria loves staying active Continued from page 1. Last year Zaria flew up to Auckland with mum Vanessa to participate in a photoshoot which will be used for the new packaging. “I had to do different poses and they videoed me doing push-ups and jogging on the spot. It was kinda awkward,” she laughs. This was very exciting for Zaria who has been in two TRYathlons and is training for her third one in March this year. “I like biking and running the best because it feels more like exercising than the swimming part does,” she says. “The hardest part is keeping up with the others but it gets easier the more I do it.” Exercise and sport is a huge part of Zaria’s life. She has tried most sports. There is nothing that she hasn’t tried that she would like to do, she says. Currently, she enjoys playing tennis, softball, league, touch and dancing hip-hop and rock‘n’roll. “I try and do a lot of sport and

exercise to be healthy,” she says. “It makes me feel fit.” Dancing rock‘n’roll can be harder than doing a TRYathlon, she says, because her coach makes her do pushups if they make mistakes. She will be heading up to Hamilton in April to compete in

the National Rock‘n’Roll Dance Competition. Doing sport not only keeps her fit but it’s a great way to keep social, mum Vanessa says. “It builds confidence and we’re keen for her to try all things.” Zaria’s advice for anyone who would like to get moving more

is simple. “Go for runs because they’re free. Or go for a walk up the hill.” You can currently find Zaria’s face staring back at you from a Weet-Bix box down the breakfast aisle in the local supermarket.

Council seeks big decisions from residents Hutt City Council met last week and agreed on the issues that will be put to Lower Hutt residents ahead of setting this year’s Annual Plan. Consultation is required because Hutt City Council is proposing to amend its Long Term Plan to accommodate a new pool in Naenae, to establish a new rubbish and recycling system, and to take steps to strike a balance between the proportion of rates paid by homeowners compared to businesses. As well as this, the council will be consulting the community on a 7.9 per cent rates revenue increase.

Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry says council is required to make some tough decisions in the face of significant financial challenges. “As Mayor, I’m committed to having an upfront and honest conversation with the community about the challenges we face, and what it will require to tackle those,” Campbell says. “It’s about being brave and setting a realistic course for council for the future. “Today we heard about the need to do things differently and to take action to make our financial position more sustainable. That’s why we’re proposing

a rates increase which tackles our deficit, begins to balance the budget and enables investments,” he says. “Soon we will be asking for feedback from our communities as part of the Annual Plan consultation process, and I would encourage everyone to make their voice heard.” Council’s chief executive Jo Miller says, “We cannot have amongst the lowest rates in the country and the lowest rates rises, very low borrowing levels and provide the best services for our community. We’ve taken a long hard look at the finances and need to do more

to achieve a balanced budget in the next few years.” The rates increase means ratepayers could pay between $1.12 and $6.47 per week with an average increase of $3.98 more per week depending on the recent property revaluation changes, she says. “I’m very conscious that asking people to pay more rates is not ideal however we heard that we need to take a hard look at the finances if we want to do everything that is expected of us.” These figures are an estimation ahead of the formal consultation on April 6.

Kasey experiences education in America By Megan Connolly

You would expect young students to head overseas on exchange. That wasn’t the case as Fernlea Primary School teacher Kasey Bircham who recently headed over to Tempe in Arizona, USA, to see the way the Americans run their schools. Kasey stayed with a host family for the duration of the trip which was three and a half weeks. “It was great because you could see the country from the eyes of a local not a tourist,” she says. The most surprising aspect of her trip was finding out how long and intense the school days were. “They start their day at 7.30am and finish at 3pm with a shorter lunch break. It made me feel very grateful to be teaching in New Zealand.” The days may have been long but the halls and cafeterias were exactly like the movies, she adds. “Many of the kids were very curious and thought we were part of Australia.” Kasey and Stu Craft from Avalon Intermediate School taught the students

some Te Reo Maori and showed them New Zealand Currency. “The kids struggled to wrap their head around time zones and the fact we’re living in the future here. They also thought we sounded like spies,” she laughs. A highlight of the trip was seeing the beauty of the Grand Canyon which was covered in snow, Kasey says. Teachers have two sister school cities to chose from, Tempe in Arizona where Kasey attended and Minoh in Japan. Exchange teachers learn about the different education systems, as well as experience a different way of life, food and hospitality. These are experiences they will then get to share in New Zealand with the teachers they host next year. The programme was established in 2015 and works to foster the relationship between Lower Hutt and its sister-city Minoh, and this year marks the 25th anniversary of the signing of the sister-city agreement. For more information or to apply contact Vesna West, International Relations Kasey Bircham got the chance to see the Grand Canyon Manager at Hutt City Council, email covered in snow with her host family during her international@huttcity.govt.nz education exchange. inbrief news Tobacco plant closes E tu says the confirmation that the Imperial Tobacco plant in Petone will close is a blow to the staff as well as the wider Lower Hutt community. E tu organiser Damon Rongotaua says the closure, which means the loss of 122 jobs, is the result of several factors which have sounded the death knell for the 100-year old plant. “As a result of health policies designed to reduce smoking including higher excise, there are declining sales and over-capacity both here and in Australia, where some of the product is sold. The plant also needs up to $4 million to bring it up to code. They’ve got two practically new plants overseas and that’s where this work will be going.” Damon says E tu members have a collective agreement with one of the best redundancy clauses in the country and many will get big payouts, especially those with decades of service. “We’ve got a couple pushing 50 years’ service; many have 35 to 45 years’ service, and about 35 per cent have about 25 years’ service plus. About 40 per cent have done 10-25 years, and then there are the newer workers.” Damon says the plant pumped millions of dollars into the Hutt Valley, to the benefit of the workers but also local businesses.

Palindromes - trivia There are only 12 palindrome days in the entire 21st century. Palindrome dates read the same forward as backwards. One of them was on February 2, 2020, or 02022020. On Thursday the date reads 20200220. So it’s not quite a palindrome, but interesting!

Big smiles for new dentist By Megan Connolly

Locals had the chance to explore the new dental practice at the weekend during Wainui Dental’s opening day on Saturday. A branch of Naenae Dental, the new team are excited to be a part of the community on The Strand. Team leader Candace Parrant has family living in Wainuiomata so she has visited the town many times and is excited to be working amongst the community. There was a blessing by the local Marae on Saturday morning before opening celebrations began. “It was a surreal and happy moment,” Candace says.

“There was a good buzz. People have already been saying it brings life back.” Candace encourages the community to come and check out their new practice, she would be happy to give them a tour. “Just pop in and say ‘Hi’, everyone is welcome to a tour. We’re keen to meet all the locals and get to know the community.” Like their practice in Naenae, Candace says they hope to bring accessible and universal, general and cosmetic, dental services to everyone in Wainuiomata. “We knew opening in Naenae in that are that we were bringing high-quality dentistry. Not just patch-ups.” The four-chair dental practice has three dentists and one oral hygienist.

Volunteers to look after nature A group of enthusiastic environmentalists are working on clearing up Waiu Park every third Saturday of the month. A Rocha, meaning ‘The Rock’ in Portuguese, held their first working bee for the year on Saturday. They do a variety of work on the scrub and bush in the surrounding area hoping to give the native plant life a better opportunity to thrive. They meet for two hours a time, from 10am to noon, making it a small but powerful commitment for anyone who wants to volunteer. The first few working bees will be attacking the blackberry and gorse right across Waiu Park, clearing along the stream and keeping an eye on the planting done last year. As the park can get quite wet and muddy, gumboots and gloves are a must. Enjoy morning tea which is provided and meet new people who travel locally and from over the hill. The next working bee will be on March 21. For more information contact Richard Rhoades on randjrhoades@gmail.com.

Intermediate school welcomes new teachers By Megan Connolly

There are four new teachers starting at Wainuiomata Intermediate school this year. A powhiri was held recently as students and staff returned for the first day of school for the new year. Each of the new teachers Chris-

topher Tait, Jess Phillips, Neill Wingham and Olivia Sisley have come from different areas in New Zealand and will be teaching composite classes of year 7s and 8s. New senior teacher, Christopher Tait has taught in Waterloo and Epuni and is excited about bringing a “sporty aspect” to the

classes. “It is a very friendly atmosphere and they’re taking education in a new positive direction and I wanted to be a part of it,” he says. “This year we’re going to focus on giving service back to the community and have an environmental focus, both in the garden and online.”

Jess Phillips came down from Auckland and has settled into life in the Hutt. During her time at her previous school, she was the science specialist so she hopes to bring this to Wainuiomata too. “I’m excited about the creative side of it all,” she says. “I’m really impressed with how

Start the year debt-free Christians Against Poverty is encouraging people overwhelmed by debt and bills to call for help and a new beginning in 2020. Alan Taylor, ‘Christians Against Poverty’s’ debt centre manager in Wainuiomata, says the new year is a great time to make positive life changes, especially after a difficult or expensive holiday season. “At this time of year, many families will be wondering how they’re going to afford school uniforms and other bills as last year’s debt piles up,” He says. “My message is: Imagine going into next Christmas completely debt-free and in control of your finance. You can do it and you are worth it. Call us today for free help.” Alan operates ‘Christians Against Poverty’s’ Wainuiomata Debt Centre out of Wainui Baptist Church which is one of the 150 churches

‘Christians Against Poverty’ partners with throughout Aotearoa. Alan and his team visit people in and around Wainuiomata to help them become debt-free. This includes establishing a budget and negotiating with money lenders and debt collectors directly, removing stress and pressure. As well as providing free debt help, the organization, essentially a network of churches. With headquarters in Auckland they provide community support groups for people who want to overcome life-controlling habits, improve financial literacy, build life skills and grow in their confidence and skill level to allow them to enter the workforce. SPORTS TALK With Jacob Page

Halberg Awards celebrate the known and unknown alike It was a fascinating Halberg Awards last week. Israel Adesanya’s speech taking aim at New Zealand’s tall poppy syndrome was a ballsy play considering many mainstream sport fans would have not known anything about the UFC champion until he received his Sportsman

of the Year award. Ignorance of UFC does not mean Adesanya is not deserving of the award because he is. To be a world champion in mixed martial arts is a truly global feat. Far more people compete in MMA than cricket, rugby, netball,

V8 SuperCars etc. Take nothing away from Kiwi driving ace Scott McLaughlin who dominated the V8s last year but it’s an achievement done in an Australasian fish bowl. The world champion Silver Ferns won the team and supreme award after their form-reversing final

win last year. It goes to show the fine line between success and failure. Their one goal win was enough to see them and wonder-coach Noeline Taurua lauded with accolades. Meanwhile, spare a thought for the Black Caps who drew their

World Cup final with England in every conceivable way yet only have a runners-up medal and the memories of what might have been that still bothers me to this day. A run here or there and the Halberg Awards would have been their night. That is sport in a nutshell.

Netballers start trials soon Ulalei Netball Club are shaping up for their new season by holding trials and registrations next week, February 25 and 27. “After a successful 2019 season, as well as the Silver Ferns and Te Wananga o Raukawa Pulse success, we hope it will encourage new members to try out,” says spokesperson Toli Sagaga. Hopefully more of the Wainuiomata community, as well as those over the hill, will come along to join Wainuiomata’s own netball club she says. “Last year we had two teams in the Premier 1 grade, one team in Senior 1 and a team in Senior 2. “We hope to build on that this year. We would love the community to support Ulalei as they have done in the past,” the president of the club Alannah Laban adds. Registration and Trials will be held at the Wainuiomata High School gym from 7pm to 8.30pm. Any inquiries, please contact Ulalei Liaison, Lahraine on 027 9446376. “Hope to see you all there, players, coachUlalei Netball Club at the Regional Super Club tournament in 2019. Sign-ups for the new season are on February 25 and 27. Photo: Supplied es, managers, and family,” Toli says.

Rugby club encourages new coaches By Megan Connolly

The Wainuiomata Rugby Club is encouraging anyone, experienced or not, to become a coach for the upcoming rugby season in March. They are currently in pre-season training ahead of their season starting on March 20. The new chairman of the club Gerard Eising says that if you don’t have any experience in coaching, but would like to try, there is plenty of support and training available. “It’s about giving back to the community and for people who just want to help out,” he says. “Get involved and give back. It’s just about participation. “Have a lot of fun.” Gerard is excited about bringing new fun ways to connect with the

community. “I’m trying to drive it in a new way to make it available for everyone,” he says. With the club, there is a “mini” club called Winchester which is a social gathering of people from 4.35pm on Friday nights. “We get together and play fun games, have raffles and put on some nibbles,” he says. “If there is a Super 15 or game on, we’ll stay open until it finishes.” What makes the social club special is that it is a place to “come and laugh” with the rugby family. The Winchester has been running for over 20? years. “It’s a great way to meet more people and runs year-round,” he says. If you are interested in coaching contact Gerard on 027 779 9411.

Cricketers face first loss for the season Wainui Premier Reserves had their first defeat for 2020 at the weekend, losing by 6 wickets to Upper Hutt in their one day game. Batting first, Wainui limped through to 169 on a good batting pitch, after being 61-5. Top scorer was Craig Foster with 64 and some big hitting from Scott Babot with 34 at the end of the innings gave Wainui a chance but ultimately was not enough. Wainui tried hard in the field but were their own worst enemies with 5 dropped catches, 16 wides and 3 no balls, resulting in a comfortable run chase for Upper Hutt. The Premier Reserves still sit comfortably at the top of the table and will be motivated to bounce back quickly at home versus Easts on Old

Timers Day at Bryan Heath Park this weekend. Wainui 2nds faired better vs Easts in their two-day match. Bowling first, Easts were dismissed for 173 with Dom Bartels getting figures of 4-28. In reply, Wainui reached 189/8, with Brent Baikie 51 and Hewson Whiting 49 being top scorers. Easts are 14-2 in their 2nd innings and things are looking positive for a result next week. Both Team Rosco and Team Brownie were defeated in the 20/20 competition. Team Rosco fell just short in their chase of 197 with Cam scoring 59, earlier Rosco 3-38, was the best of the 20/20 bowlers in the weekend.
