Old and New Two prominent real estate brands have joined forces to form Collective First National – a unique agency that values people over profits. The next generation agency draws together the heritage of the trusted and internationally renowned First National Guardian with local community-focused favourites – William YIP & Anita Corlett of Team YIP. The result? A fusion of old and new working together to overhaul the status quo by providing fresh ideas, utilising leading technology and disrupting longstanding industry rules in order to provide a better customer experience.
Of the partnership co-director Shawn Gibbon says: “First National Guardian has been in the Wellington market for 35 years and we just knew it was time to say goodbye to the old look and name and match our name and brand to a new and innovative way of working.” Led by directors Shawn Gibbon, Gareth Robins, Owen Mills, who have over 80 years of industry experience between them, the agency will bring together some of the best and brightest real estate agents in the country. But what makes Collective First National so different is their approach. Continued on page 3.

‘Walk With Me’ to support Samaritans By Glenise Dreaver
The Samaritans have a vision. It’s to reduce deaths by suicide. Wellington Samaritans spokesperson Gillian Ransom says they do that by supporting those in need. “Our helpline, 0800 726 666, is open 24/7 for anyone needing confidential and non-judgmental support.” Like others nationwide, it’s run by volunteers. Despite this, it costs money to operate and this year’s fund-raiser needs to raise at least $15,000. (Gillian says Samaritans rely on this as they receive no Government funding.) So ‘Walk With Me’, their 10km fund-raiser, is being held on Saturday March 28, leaving at 6pm from Civic Square. Sponsored participants will do the green-themed walk from there to Cogs Park in Hataitai, and back. Queen Margaret’s College student Rebecca Murray of Ngaio is signed up and two school friends, Libby Witheford-Smith and Amelia Ware, are walking with her. “Mental health is a big issue in New Zealand,” says Becca. “So having someone to listen is
important.” Amelia agrees. “It’s the instant accessibility of it. You don’t have to book in to talk to someone.” The three young women confess to not having done specific training yet. “But we do walk to school,” says Becca. “We really should do more though,” adds Amelia, who has a full programme of walking and running in the next few weeks. She will also do a sponsored entry in the Cancer Society’s 24hour Relay for Life on April 4-5. Becca is going on that with her, and before that she joined Libby in the Wellington College 13k Runathon for World Vision on March 13-14. Gillian comments that there is a wide range of ages among those who will do ‘Walk for Me’. But no one disagrees when Libby comments that while it isn’t a race or anything, they might try to set the pace… Becca is setting up an Everyday Hero page at: https://give.everydayhero.com/ nz/rebecca-milly-and-libby, or you can go to the Samaritans page at https://give.everydayhero.com/ nz/walk-with-me.
Rebecca Murray, centre, has her Samaritans t shirt checked for size by two school friends, Libby Witheford-Smith at left, and Amelia Ware. They will take part in the organisation's green-themed "Walk With Me" event on Saturday March 28. Photo: Glenise Dreaver

During my years in Police, I found that morale was often best when we were really up against the odds, as we were when gangs took on police both in Porirua in the 1970s and Masterton in the 1980s when I was serving in those places.

We were well led and focused, worked hard, and we won! I’m feeling the same way as part of this Government now, as our country and indeed the world faces up to the challenge of COVID-19, which is threatening our health and economies.
Our chief science adviser is in close contact with her equivalents around the world, who are constantly developing and sharing best practice. So please ensure you get your information from official sources and not from the illinformed commentators who seem to abound, especially on social and mainstream media.
Firstly leadership.
Please go to the Ministry of Health website www.health.govt.nz for the latest information. I’m also keeping my Facebook page and website up to date with the latest information as well – facebook.com/gregohariu and www.gregoconnor.nz.
I’ve had good and bad leaders over the years.
We will get through this together.
My observations from up close give me confidence to absolutely assure constituents that Jacinda Ardern is just the leader we need right now to lead us through this crisis, as she has through other crises. She has the intellectual grunt, toughness and empathy to do so.
Finance Minister Grant Robertson announced a $12.1 billion package on Tuesday designed to do three things; build health capacity to provide treatment, protect businesses and jobs, and get money to those who need it and will spend it quickly and locally, typically the lower paid, thus boosting the economy.
Greg O’Connor
She is well supported by cabinet who have also really stepped up.
This well thought out approach and the decisions we are making now will ensure NZ comes out stronger and more unified as a country.

Importantly, the decisions we are making in relation to border closures, testing, and isolation are all based on the best information available.

New real estate agency shakes up status quo Born out of frustration over the way the current real estate industry operates, they have a desire to better serve the community by offering a deeply personalised service which goes above and beyond what traditional agencies would do. This means they truly work to ensure their clients are happy, and if they need to spend more time to do that, they will. “The problem is most companies say they put their clients first but don’t have any actions to back this up,” says co-director Gareth
Robins. “We have structured our entire business around people before profits. “Our hope is that if we are doing the right thing by our clients and the community, then the community will support our team.” The very ethos of the new agency was born from a community-developed charter, which saw them meet with a huge number of home owners to find out what real estate companies could do better. They took all the feedback on board and committed to imple-
menting almost every point that was expressed by the public. William YIP says this unusual step of involving the community was vital for creating Collective First National. “What’s the point in operating a company that the community, clients and team don’t want? We are a family owned, locally-focussed business with locals working for us, so it’s not only important to have public involvement – it’s absolutely non-negotiable. It is high-time we threw out the old rules and actually work for our
clients.” With their ethos, expertise and attitude Collective First National are heralding a new era, one where they’re not just your go-to agents but also your friends in real estate. With the largest team in the area, Collective First National will service the entire Wellington area with offices at 20 Johnsonville Road, Johnsonville and 101c Westchester Drive, Churton Park. Come visit or check us out at www.collectivefn.co.nz. PBA
Rich heritage in Churton Park The people of Churton Park have rich cultural diversity and, over the years, this has led to a series of initiatives to celebrate their ancestral cultures. “Amongst these was a relationship that had been built with the people of the Al-Ameen Mosque in Newlands,” says Brian Sheppard, the president of the Community Association and the Independent Herald’s Out and About reporter. “Even before March 15 last year The Newlands Mosque’s leader, Sheikh Khaled Said, had explained to us that his people were a mixture of new and established New Zealanders who share a commitment to the future of our country,” says Brian. “He points out they are just everyday Kiwis who follow the Islamic religion,” he adds. In his role as Out and About reporter, Brian already had a considerable collection of photographs that illustrated the Muslim community’s contributions to this area. “I offered to extend my photo coverage to illustrate Sheikh Khaled’s message, and so the idea of a photographic exhibition of the Al-Ameen community was born,” says Brian. And when the Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand and the Wellington City Council decided to stage an exhibition at Shed 6 to commemorate the first anniversary of the March 15 massacre, Al-Ameen offered Brian’s photographic exhibition as one of its contributions. Sadly, the event entitled ‘Umah’, had to be

inbrief news City planning Redeveloping the Te Ngakau Civic Precinct as the living heart of the city will be discussed by the Mayor and councillors on Wednesday March 25. Mayor Andy Foster says that earthquakes in 2013 and 2016; aging and inflexible support services, and the relocation of key services after key locations, like the Central Library closed have all affected the area. On Wednesday councillors were briefed on options for developing the precinct’s spatial plan, central city library services and the library building itself. Andy said that Planning for Growth and Let’s Get Wellington Moving also needed to be considered, along with long-term sea level rise issues and the effect of Covid 19. The briefing report will be published on the Wellington City Council website on Friday March 20.

U3A provides challenge
Many club presidents would envy the problem faced by Barbara Crump of Khandallah. The current president of Wellington City’s U3A (University of the Third Age) she says it is a challenge to provide appropriate activities for a membership of over 1100. The Independent Herald recently ran a story about the Tawa branch of this international movement (p.1 January 30, 2020) and the Wellington group is equally large. Like Tawa, its enthusiastic and active committee includes a number of people from the northern suburbs. Barbara says the Wellington U3A has Tuesday and Friday lectures from late February till early November and they are held at the Embassy Theatre at 10 Kent Terrace. “These cover a vast range of topics such as local and national issues, science, the arts, medicine, literature, politics and international affairs,” she says. She adds that those wanting to play a more active role can join one of the 18 interest groups.
These northern suburbs committee members form a strong contingent in the Wellington U3A organisation. From left they are: Tricia Walbridge, secretary, Wadestown, Rae Julian, Ngaio, Barbara Crump, president, Khandallah, Heather Nelson, Khandallah and Dougal Congalton, Karori. Photo supplied.
These range from walking groups, book and film groups, art history and Shakespeare, to current issues and philosophy. Some meet in the northern suburbs, in Malvina Major Village, in St Ninians Church in Karori or in private homes. “Members can also enjoy
special events such as visits to Matiu/:Somes Island, Stonehenge (Wairarapa) and the Bata Factory in Happy Valley,” she says. A survey of members in 2019 showed wide appreciation of their programmes Barbara adds. “Most especially enjoyed the
lecture programme, describing it as interesting, informative or thought-provoking, with engaging, well-organised or inspiring speakers, with speakers at the Embassy attracting up to 400 members. More details are available at https://u3awellingtoncity.org.nz/.
Epilepsy first aid support for schools Author Krystle Crimmins launched a very significant first aid publication on March 3 at the City Council Chambers. Kyrstle, a Rotarian from the Karori Club, has written a booklet on understanding and dealing with epileptic seizures and it is being sent to 238 schools in the Greater Wellington area. Wellington Mayor, Andy Foster, launched the booklet, prepared with support from several Rotary Clubs, Karori , Kau Kau, Wellington South and Tawa and the endorsement of the medical profession. At the launch Krystle said she was diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 10 months and has had a lifetime of experiencing seizures. She created the booklet because of a lack of awareness around epilepsy and how to handle it when confronting someone having a seizure. It is estimated that around 1-2 per cent of New Zealanders have epilepsy.
Krystle says she is available to talk to community organisations about epilepsy and her promotion to date has included disability groups, Rotary Clubs and also the Taxi Federation of New Zealand. Andy praised Krystle for her determination in life to overcome the great difficulties associated with her disability and to get the message about first aid out to as many groups as possible. He says he is keen to see the publication used in the transport industry, for bus and other modes of transport and in recreation centres and swimming pools through the Wellington region, adding that the booklet would help many people better understand what sufferers put up with on a daily basis. Andy also pointed out it was very appropriate to have the launch of this publication early in March, as Purple Day to increase awareness of epilepsy in New Zealand and world-wide, will take place on March 26.

New leader for op shop Karori’s award-winning St John’s Trust Op shop will have a new leader from the start of August. Current board member and a previous volunteer Marilyn Slack takes over the reins from retiring chairperson Elaine Campbell. All profits from the shop go to aid the Downtown Community Ministry, Wesley Foodbanks and local Karori groups involved with children, youth, local schools, pre-schools and the elderly. And in 2012 the Op Shop was given a Gold Award at the Youth Awards Ceremony for “giving back to the
community specifically for those in need”. “Our reputation for the best buys and the most friendly helpful staff is well known and we are proud of the comments we receive and thankful to those who give to us,” says Marilyn. Retiring after 15 years at the helm, Elaine says: “It’s been wonderful and very rewarding because I’ve had the support of 40 volunteers. They are the heroes of our op shop story. “It’s a cohesive group of people at all levels. They stay a long time and their loyalty is amazing. I’ve just done what I like doing and everyone’s helped.”
Today St John’s Op Shop, started in 1992 by Julie Abbott, wife of Rev. Bryant Abbot of St John’s Methodist church, is supported by the Uniting Parishes of St John’s and St Ninian’s and the wider community. Over the years the op shop has gone from strength to strength especially following its move to the Karori community centre in 2005 with a cleaner, lighter and brighter premises. “We worked hard to get the community behind us because their donations have enabled us to function,” says Elaine, adding however that now is the time to retire.

Don’t blame council Brett Dear Ed, I was most disappointed to read the comments from Brett Hudson in his column (March 12) regarding the Newlands Fire Station. Brett has unfortunately got it wrong. This is not a Wellington City Council issue and blaming them for the closure of the Fire Station is unfair. It has been driven by Fire and Emergency New Zealand. In 2009, the Wellington City Council advised the NZ Fire Service of its plans to redevelop Newlands Park and playground. Funding was to be allocated in
2018/2019. In 2015 the NZ Fire Service confirmed to the council that the Newlands Station was not required for operational reasons and that the area would be covered by Johnsonville. It would not close however until the park redevelopment was started. Since 2009, FENZ have known about this but have done nothing as they want to get rid of the Newlands Fire Station. Covid-19 & Real Estate? Hey Everyone! With Covid-19 cases now in Wellington, and with new cases appearing in the city, it is important that we all do our bit to minimise any potential spread and social harm. We have put in place updated cleaning & sanitising plans for each of our offices, to ensure they’re cleaned more frequently and with extra care. The biggest point in question is around showing houses for sale to potential purchasers – unfortunately there are clients in situations that need to sell or buy – so it is important that we can continue to serve you to the standard you love and expect. Like all businesses, we are guided by the Ministry of Health, and our priority is the wellbeing of our clients, team, community, apart from the usual initiatives here are some of the changes that will help: So that you can narrow down the number of properties to visit, we will have all available property information and reports provided online. Video tours / video chat walkthroughs will be available for all properties. We will also increase photos taken and videos where possible. Prior to anyone entering a property, they must be registered and adhere to the Covid-19 conditions of entry and best practices as per Ministry of Health instruction. People will not be allowed entry to any property or offices if they do not meet these criteria (this includes everyone in our team) We have also allocated more people and resources so that we can have longer/more open homes (to spread the visitation density) and have more private viewing slots available. Hand sanitiser will be available at every appointment and common contact surfaces following viewings will be sanitised. We’re equally committed to caring for our team. We’ve provided our salespeople with up-to-the-moment guidance and information so they can keep themselves and their families safe, which in turn helps to keep you safe also. We have reviewed and updated our travel policy to help enhance the safety of our team and clients. Precautions aside, the property market continues to be positive, with sales in our office this week reaching great heights both in price and in number of offers. New Zealand is one of the safest countries in the
world to live in and traditionally when there is a tough situation overseas such as Covid-19, Australian bush fire, etc – people flood back to New Zealand, creating much higher demand for property. Ex-pats from around the world are coming back and are actively looking to buy / rent. We have people from all over the world who have moved to New Zealand and are looking to make this place home. People are also a lot less likely to leave New Zealand (reducing supply). Although many, many markets have taken a hit – the property market in our area is currently performing well. This week there was a noticeable drop in some people’s Kiwisaver due to a fall in the investment market. This will affect the purchasing ability of some buyers this week – if you have a substantial amount in your Kiwisaver it would be worth seeking some independent financial advice on your situation. Another area to keep an eye on is the potentially growing unemployment situation – although this is likely to resolve itself when the virus situation subsides, and normal global operation resumes, there will still be a short-term shock to the market and may mean some people will need to put their houses up for sale. The government stimulus package that was announced this week is designed to address this issue and if it does everything that it plans, we should see New Zealand getting through these upcoming months much better. The Wellington property market is in very low supply at present, so even if people do need to sell, they could benefit from these selling conditions. Here are Team YIP, Collective First National , one thing will remain the same: We will make our decisions with the health, safety and wellbeing of our customers, team members and communities as our highest priority. If you are concerned about the Covid-19 situation in relation to your property decision, feel free to give me a call and have a chat. Stay safe everyone!

Does it hurt? That’s a common question of people arriving at the Thorndon Caci Clinic asking about their very popular laser hair removal system, and the answer is very reassuring. “Different people feel the laser in different ways,” says Mike Simpson, the clinic’s manager/owner. “For some, there is a feeling of heat, others feel a slight sting, and some say the sensation is like the flick of a rubber band. Most people agree that laser is preferable to waxing!” And, he says, the clinic’s personalised Freedom 12-month membership offer gives clients outstanding long-term results. “It ensures your hair is treated in each growth cycle,” says Mike. And by outlining the frequency of treat-
ment, and the cost, clients know in advance when their treatments are, how much it will cost and how long it will take to see the results. “On a Freedom® membership we guarantee up to an 80 per cent reduction,” Mike adds. The membership also includes treats such as free facials, 20 per cent off

free introductory consultation to find out if it is right for you. “Blonde, red and grey hairs are more difficult to remove and not all skin types are suitable,” says Mike. The clinic offers the treatment on face, underarms, bikini/brazilian, back, chest, arms and/or legs. “You should start to see a difference after your third or fourth treatment,” says Mike. “It is impossible to remove 100 per cent of unwanted hair, due to the hormonal nature of hair growth and individual results will vary. But we aim for up to an 80 per cent reduction.” He says the cost of Freedom will vary depending on the area that you would like to treat. “Caci offer easy payment plans that allow you to spread the cost of your treatments over the year.”

Oleg Marshev Recital cancelled Because of coronavirus restrictions, pianist Oleg Marshev, due to perform in Waikanae on March 29, has sadly had to cancel his New Zealand tour. He has performed in Waikanae three times before and has always been an audience favourite. Meanwhile, the Music Society will be pressing on with plans for the rest of the season and will be continuing its important work in supporting young musicians. Twice a year the Society runs concerts enabling school-age musicians to gain experience at performing in public. These concerts are always very well attended and attract a wide variety of talent, including solo items as well as chamber music groups and jazz groups. Another initiative is the Waikanae Music Society’s Charitable Trust for Young Musicians. This was established in 2008 to mark the Society’s 30th anniversary. Annual scholarships are awarded to promising young New Zealand musicians
under the age of 30 who have the potential to make successful careers as musicians. The total number of scholarships awarded now reaches 37 with a total value of $87,500. Baritone Kieran Rayner sang in the Society’s student concerts as a boy soprano. Later he won one of the Baritone Kieran Rayner Society’s Scholarships to receiving an award from help with his overseas study. Dame Kiri Te Kanawa Now a L ondon-based operatic baritone he has recently graduated from the Royal College International Opera School.

Steam Incorporated is returning to the rails with its first excursion on Sunday 10 May after an absence of just under a year. We along with other heritage rail operators who use the national rail system were compelled to put our locomotives and rolling stock through a new engineering re-certification process. Our previous exacting mechanical and safety checking procedures have helped us get through the new process and we are looking forward to once again providing a programme of regular steam and diesel hauled heritage train trips through the North Island.

A group of Giraffes is called a Tower
Dear Editor Tena koutou. We write in response to the comments by Brett Hudson MP regarding Newlands fire station (Independent Herald, March 12). Mr Hudson says the City Council is proposing to shut down the Newlands Fire Station to make way for public toilets. Mr Hudson’s comments are incorrect and unhelpful. As has been known for years, Fire and Emer-
gency NZ needs to remove the fire station building so the Council can start the long-awaited upgrade of Newlands Park. The fire station building is blocking the entrance to the park and preventing the Council from turning the park into the facility and destination that Newlands people want and deserve. We all know there’s vigorous debate under way about the future
of the Newlands Volunteer Fire Brigade – it would help if political leaders like Mr Hudson could be more careful with their comments and help the community to work through this situation constructively. Nga mihi Jenny Condie Jill Day Malcolm Sparrow Takapu/Northern Ward Councillors
in Black Rock Road was entered via a bathroom window and a cell phone was stolen. In Khandallah a Honda Torneo parked overnight in Onslow Road was stolen. In Ngaio a black Nissan Murano stationwagon, parked unlocked briefly in the late afternoon in a Bankot Crescent driveway was entered and a handbag stolen. The bag was later found and handed in to Police. Items missing from the bag include several pieces of jewellery and an ID card. In Churton Park a blue Honda Logo hatchback parked during the night in Chisbury Street had a window smashed, but there is no indication of entry. Jemmy marks on the back door of a house in Erlestoke Crescent
indicate an attempted break in. No access was gained. A guard dog was confined to its kennel at night which suggests that the break in occurred during that time, otherwise the dog would have challenged the intruders. In Ngauranga a Toyota Lucida parked, locked, in Malvern Road was stolen overnight. The vehicle contained personal possessions as the owners were moving into the house and had not unloaded it. A Toyota Hiace parked overnight in Centennial Highway, in a gated but unlocked parking area, was searched after a window was smashed. Nothing was reported stolen. Two hooded and masked persons were caught on CCTV within the site of a building refurbishment at Jarden Mile.
Locked boxes of tools were broken open and a large quantity of power tools stolen. In Wilton an insecure Ford Escape parked overnight in Pembroke Road was stolen. It was recovered from Hereford Street with a flat battery. In Wadestown a Ford Ranger parked overnight in Barnard Street had locks jemmied and power tools stolen. Also in Barnard Street a Toyota Hiace parked overnight in a driveway had a window broken and a socket set stolen. In Northland a black Mazda Atenza saloon parked overnight on the street in Governor Road was damaged when offenders tried to jemmy the keyhole area. No entry gained.
EYE ON CRIME In Johnsonville a CFMOTO motorbike, parked locked and secure during the day in a Chesterton Street carport was stolen. A Mazda Atenza parked during the afternoon at the Johnsonville Mall carpark was broken into. A window was broken and clothing and shoes were stolen. A Kia Cerato hatchback in Broderick Road had its front registration plate stolen, while a Suzuki Swift parked during the day in the Countdown carpark in Moorefield Road had its rear registration plate stolen. The alarm failed to operate in a locked and alarmed Kia Sportage parked overnight in Burgess Road when a window was smashed. No entry was gained. In Newlands, there was a rummage search of a Nissan Qashqai
parked overnight in Glanmire Road after a window was smashed. The ignition was pulled out, but an attempt to steal it was abandoned. Nothing is reported stolen. A Volkswagen Golf parked overnight in Middleton Road had a swastika scratched on the bonnet. An attempt was made to steal a broken down Honda Civic parked off road in Helston Road. The owner found two men in the vehicle who claimed to have thought it was a derelict vehicle. They offered to buy it for spares. The offer was declined. The glass front door of the Newlands Pharmacy was smashed with a rock to gain entry. The alarms were activated and Police attended. CCTV footage is being examined by Police.
