Johnsonville’s Ray Harkness has been recognised for his contribution to search and rescue at the annual NZ Search and Rescue Awards at Government House on Tuesday night.

Ray was recognised for more than 20 years of dedicated service as a volunteer, both as a search team member with Land Search and Rescue (LandSAR), and for providing vital radio communication networks as a member of Amateur Radio Emergency Communications (AREC).

Ray’s passion for people honoured Continued from page 1.

His initiative and vision to support those in need led to his work with Wellington Wander Search.

This service currently supports 65 people in Wellington living in the community with a cognitive impairment such as alzheimers, dementia, autism and Down syndrome who are at risk of going missing to live healthy, active lifestyles. The technology involved uses a small electronic pendant, which can be tracked with specialised equipment by trained LandSAR personnel.

Ray founded and administers the trust which funds Wander Search in Wellington as well as

performing many of the day-today tasks required to successfully provide the programme for clients and rescuers in the region.

Ray says he was surprised to receive an individual honour for what he considers a team role.

“It’s a nice surprise and I’m very humbled but there are people out there on the ground tramping through rough terrain in all sorts of Wellington weather looking for people who have tougher tasks than I do when I’m sitting in the warm coordinating the radios most of the time,” he says.

Ray has done his share of searching on foot for people with cognitive issues who wan-

der away from their place of residence and he says the Wander Search pendant, which helps track people’s movements, has been vital.

“Sometimes you’re out with police looking for someone on a pitch black night at 11pm and the pendant really helps narrow the search areas and allows resources to be better utilised.

“An honour is a pat on the head for the work done in the community which I enjoy immensely,” he says.

He says Wander Search provides a level of comfort for families worried about the safety of loved ones and provides an extra

safeguard for the people who need to wear them.

“I think they provide an important service for people.

“When you are searching for a person, there is an initial adrenaline rush that comes with it but the most important thing is that we find people safe and well.”

Ray says while he has considered stepping away, he knows he is relied upon in the community to help those in need and that makes for a tough dilemma at times.

“There’s always times you feel you should fade away but I know there are people relying on the pendant who need it,” he says.

Ellie climbs Makara Peak for children’s hospital Wellington Children’s Hospital has a special advocate in seven-year- old Ellie.

She recently set herself the enormous challenge of climbing Makara peak 20 times to raise money for the hospital.

“We decided as a family to set a challenge and I like to challenge myself to hard things.

“It was tricky and hard but it was worth it.

“My favourite thing was exploring all the different Makara tracks.

“Sometimes the weather was nice, sometimes it was wet and very very windy.

“I wanted to donate my money to the Children at the Hospital.”

Her little brother Mason, 5, also completed the challenge and made his donation to another worthy charity.

St Brigid’s is a large Catholic Year 1-8 Primary School located in the heart of Johnsonville.

Jennifer has been the Director of Primary at Samuel Marsden Collegiate.

Jennifer joined Marsden in 2020 from St Anthony’s School in Seatoun where she

was Principal.

She has been an enthusiastic and innovative leader of Marsden Primary for the past two and a half years and in that time she has positively influenced the learning experiences of our tamariki.

Jennifer will remain at the helm of Marsden Primary throughout Term 2 whilst we undertake a recruitment process in search of our next Director of Primary.

Wellington Regional Children’s Hospital Virtual Pyjama Appeal To help keep kids warm and well this winter, Wellington Hospitals Foundation has launched its annual Jammies in June Appeal.

Respiratory conditions are a leading cause of acute admissions to hospital for children and Wellington Regional Children’s Hospital sees a significant increase in the number of children who are admitted over the winter months many of them arriving without a pair of pyjamas.

For children who need hospitalisation, the most common respiratory conditions are also associated with socioeconomic deprivation, and sadly, the Wellington Regional Children’s Hospital’s community nursing teams frequently visit children in homes that are crowded, cold and damp. This leaves young children even more vulnerable to complications from asthma (with one in seven kiwi kids diagnosed as asthmatic), bronchitis and other nasty respiratory infections.

Bill Day, Chair of Wellington Hospitals Foundation said, “Every year we are overwhelmed by our community’s support for Wellington Hospitals Foundation’s annual pyjama appeal. Some

kiwi families are doing it really tough and there are many sick kids seen at home by our community nursing teams who have never even owned a pair of pyjamas. Other kids are unexpectedly raced into hospital on cold winter nights with little or no notice. It’s scary for kids, and having a warm pair of clean pyjamas to change into makes a huge difference to our tamariki, rangatahi and whƗnau.”

With thousands of PJs donated and distributed in the last 5 years, this programme makes a significant difference to many families across our region. Gifts of warm winter pyjamas play an essential part in the care and treatment of children with all sorts of winter illnesses, and with COVID also circulating in our community, it will be even more important for our paediatric teams to distribute warm pyjamas to sick children this winter.

How can our community help?

This year due to COVID we are unable to accept donations of actual pyjamas.

But our community can donate online at whf.org.nz and we will buy PJs on their behalf.

Teresea Olsen’s a Greater Wellingtonian of the Year, too Greater Wellington says hat’s off to Wellingtonian of the Year Teresea Olsen for working tirelessly to boost COVID vaccination rates in the region to help keep vulnerable communities as safe as possible.

“Teresea and the Kok iri Marae Keriana Olsen Trust worked tirelessly, and notably in helping Metlink get its Delta Buster bus on the road to provide an eye-catching mobile, community focused, pop-up vaccination centre,” says Greater Wellington Chair Daran Ponter.

“It’s a well-deserved honour and rightful recognition from the people of Wellington of a fabulous achievement. If we had such an award, she’d be Greater

Wellingtonian of the year, too.

“Her energy, enthusiasm and commitment to supporting vulnerable communities was outstanding and obviously played a big role in ensuring the region exceeded a 90 per cent vaccination rate.”

The key to success hinged on making vaccination easy. One aspect of her achievement was building on free travel to and from vaccinations that Metlink already had in place across the region, ensuring the Delta Buster was able to get to hard to reach communities.

Rotary reaching out to key audiences The Rotary Club of Karori is proud of its recent efforts to reach out to every school in the central North Island with guidance on how to deal with various forms of epilepsy.

Over 500 schools, primary, intermediate and secondary from Wellington to Taranaki up to the Ruapehu District, to southern Hawke’s Bay and down into the Wairarapa and Hutt Valley, in Rotary District 9940, received a copy of this First Aid Epilepsy education booklet.

Author, Rotarian, and an epilepsy sufferer herself from birth, Krystle Crimmins, says she was delighted to receive such warm responses from heads of schools on obtaining this publication.

“This was most heartening, given the fact that teachers and others at school have to deal with children who have disabilities and when sports and other activities occur those attending also need to know how to deal with someone who is suffering from a seizure”.

Krystle got onto the Rotary Club of Karori to help her in her mission to target schools as one key community groups needing information on epilepsy.

Another key group for Krystle has been the transport industry, especially the Taxi Federation and helping to educate drivers in case their assistance is needed to help passengers who have epilepsy.

Around 48,000 New Zealanders have

epilepsy and one in 20 people will have an epileptic seizure in their lifetime.

“Knowing how to deal with this when someone is having a seizure. is vital. People of all ages can get seizures,” says Krystle.

At a recent Hurricanes match at the Stadium in Wellington, Krystle who works with hospitality teams saw someone having a seizure during the match. She was able to quickly attend to their needs and make the person comfortable until they were in recovery.

Karori Rotary President David Watt says this is the type of project that Karori is good at delivering on and the Club was heartened to have the support of over 40 Rotary Clubs in their district to help hand deliver the first aid publication to every school in the District.

Delivery was delayed for several month by covid lockdown, but once the publication had reached the heads of schools a positive response was immediate.

“We are celebrating 40 years of service in June and the Rotary Club of Karori is determined to keep to its service objectives of reaching out to communities to respond to their needs and well- being,” says David.

On-demand public transport launched in Tawa On-demand public transport was launched in Wellington for the first time, as part of a 12-month Metlink trial in the suburb of Tawa.

Using a mobile phone app designed by Via, people in Tawa can order rides from buses operating without set routes between flexible pick-up and drop-off locations, or ‘virtual stops’.

Greater Wellington Transport Committee chair Roger Blakeley said the trial showed the council’s public transport wing was moving with the times.

“Today’s launch marks more than just the arrival of an exciting service for Tawa. It represents Metlink’s commitment to developing an intelligent, accessible and integrated network that better serves the region’s commuters.”

Redwood and Linden train stations, and Tawa’s CBD are key stops during peak hours (weekdays 6:30am - 9am and 4pm - 6pm).

Off peak (9am - 4pm weekdays and all weekend) passengers can travel anywhere in Tawa, including to important community destinations such as shops, supermarkets and medical centres.

Tawa Community Board chair Robyn Parkinson said she was delighted with Metlink’s response to local transport needs.

“Tawa residents wanted public transport to hillside and outlying areas. The board made pushing for this a priority two years ago and is pleased to have worked closely with Metlink on the new service.”

Starting at $2.50, rides are paid for using a credit or debit card registered with the Via app, the platform supporting Timaru’s highly successful on-demand bus service.

The app provides real-time bookings and trip information, directing users to the nearest virtual stop to be picked up at an agreed time.

“Via is proud to partner with Metlink to provide an efficient, ondemand transport system in Tawa,” said Via’s Asia-Pacific regional manager Ben Hague.

“The service will make it convenient for residents to connect with other public transport services and local retailers and ultimately rely less on private cars.”

confident its drivers can pick-up most passengers within about 10 minutes of receiving their orders.

“Mana is delighted to supply Metlink’s Tawa customers with a service that will improve wellbeing through better access to local amenities,” said Mana chief executive Craig Chin.

“This trial brings together our highly skilled workforce with the latest digital technology to create an enjoyable customer experience that also connects passengers to the regional rail network.”

Metlink will take what it learns

from the trial with a view to piloting similar services elsewhere in the region, Cr Blakeley said.

“We are looking for ways to bridge gaps between public transport hubs, isolated suburbs and sparsely populated areas.

“While we are very clear this is a trial, the ability to measure its uptake and use the findings to guide a potential roll out elsewhere could be a game changer for the region.”

Can’t afford to sell, stay or rent out?

Hey everyone! This week I want to shed some light on the big issues the market is facing, with the hope that anyone out there with any influence can have a positive and constructive solution around this.

1. Can’t afford to sell: For those who bought a house in 2021 and parts of 2020, these homeowners are now looking at a negative equity situation where the value of their property has fallen by more than their deposit / equity in the property. In most cases this means they have lost all their savings and could even owe the bank more than what their house is worth. So, if the homeowner is hit with a situation where they need to sell, they are caught in this terrible predicament.

2. Can’t afford to stay: If you look at the interest rates in 2020 and 2021, most of these mortgages were locked into those super low & attractive 1-to-2-year mortgage rates, the first wave of these mortgage terms are up for renewal and we will see more and more of these expire. The new mortgage rates have more than doubled and the homeowner’s ability to absorb/service this gigantic increase in repayments will be very difficult. Yes, this is part of inflation, but society have a wonderful way of having selective variance, where the average income of people in society tend not to ‘keep up’ with the cost of living - putting these homeowners in an awkward situation where they can’t afford to stay in their home.

investment where the rent doesn’t cover your true costs and the investment is losing market value every week. “But I don’t have a mortgage” – that is irrelevant, you deserve a return on the equity in the property and equally you could sell and put that money in a term deposit and make more money and not have the stress of being a landlord.

For landlords the obvious solution is to receive higher rents, and we’ve already seen a significant increase in the advertised rent in the area. But in most cases that has gone beyond the market demand and properties remain untenanted. There’s also no good news for those looking to hike the rent of existing tenants, with recent cases where the Tenancy Tribunal have overruled those rent increases and ordering landlords to reduce the rent back to ‘market level’.

All these issues have created a perfect storm in the property market, and with elections coming up and banks making billions in profits… it seems glaringly obvious that something has got to change, and it cannot come sooner.

The REBUS Club of Khandallah members were pleased to meet again in person at the April monthly meeting.

Covid caused a January cancellation and Zoom meetings were held in February and March.

Incoming President Vish Sarma was presented with the Chain of Office by former President Laurel Ferguson.

Guest speaker at this meeting was Cameron Turner, Commercial Manager of the Open Polytechnic. Cameron connected immediately with his Rebus audience when he disclosed his historic family connection to Khandallah: his grandfather Bill Curle was for 40 years the proprietor of Khandallah garage.

The many members who remember Bill were delighted to hear he’s about to reach his 90th birthday.

Cameron outlined a brief history of the Open Polytechnic since it opened just after WWII. He spoke about the learners they cater for; their transformation from paper to digital resources; and their future amalgamation into Te Pukenga – the New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology.

The Open Polytechnic has a unique role in NZ vocational education. Its philosophy of Open Distance Flexible Learning means that it operates on an any time, any place, any student, any pace principle – greatly helped since the 2015 launch of its iQualify learning system which can be accessed via mobile devices.

If a picture paints a thousand words, than what about a photo?

Karori’s local social drama group has been exploring just that.

Cherished photos have been the springboard for an outpouring of creativity by the group.

First we learn the story behind each photo, then that story is used as inspiration for improvised scenes, characters, even poems and soundtracks.

The process provides a weekly dose of fun and laughter, much needed by the group as Omicron sweeps through the country.

But it’s more than just fun. The experience has proven to be “empowering and uplifting” for regular member, Sheryl. She looks forward meeting each week and “catching hold of the group’s joy and laughter”.

Karori resident, Margaret adds that the class “sets me up for the rest of the week”, an observation readily echoed by the rest of the group.

The class is for those 65 years and over and is one of eight weekly social drama classes delivered across the city by Voice Arts, a creative space committed to the development and wellbeing of those in

their third age. This class is led by theatre practitioners, Jacqui Coats and Hilary Norris, and combines easy improvisation exercises, drama games and storytelling, “These social drama classes are perfect for creating a sense of wellbeing and social connection, helping to combat loneliness and isolation”, says Voice Arts artistic director, Nicola Pauling. The classes have FHUWDLQO\ KDG D SRVLWLYH H൵ HFW RQ WKH PHQWDO health of group member, Sheila, who says that the “classes stop me sitting at home, feeling depressed”. Fellow participant, Cathie adds that she looks forward to each Tuesday as it “helps to keep her going”.

Irish dancers in northern suburbs get international flavour Irish dancers from throughout the northern suburbs and New Zealand will compete at Te Papa this weekend - and for the first time in more than two years they’ll be judged by an international adjudicator.

The Capital City Feis, run by Gregan Irish Dancers, was just one of the many dancing competitions to be cancelled as a result of COVID-19 lockdowns and gathering restrictions, and Gregan founder and head teacher Laura Kelly said it felt like a long time between drinks.

“New Zealand has been so fortunate not to have the terrible COVID toll of so many

other countries but we just can’t wait to see our dancers back on stage doing what they love this weekend,” she says.

“We adjusted to restrictions by having classes and even some competitions via Zoom but there really is nothing like in-person competitions, judged by an international adjudicator who doesn’t know any of the dancers and who can compare them to other dancers overseas.”

Leanne Halloran from Sydney will judge the Capital City Feis, which is expected to attract about 400 dancers and spectators.

competition at Te Papa, as it gives us a chance to show our beautiful city to those from outof-town,” Laura says.

A Traditional Irish Dancing Association of New Zealand (TIDANZ) spokesperson said dancer numbers had fallen 25 percent during

the pandemic but that numbers were on the rise again now restrictions had lifted.

“The first TIDANZ National Championship in two years will be held in October, and dancers couldn’t be more excited,” the spokesperson says.

McCullum pick a bold, calculated gamble There is never any guarantee a new coach with fresh ideas will work but English cricket has taken a step in the right direction by making Brendon McCullum their new test coach.

The former Black Caps skipper has only ever coached T20 cricket so he is no sure-thing in this role, but the move is a bold one from the English, who have now entered a new era of their red ball history.

Let’s be honest, they couldn’t be much worse at the moment.

McCullum, 40, will take charge of the side - which has won just one of its last 17 tests - to replace Chris Silverwood, who was sacked after England’s 4-0 Ashes series defeat to Australia.

McCullum, along with coach Mike Hesson, changed the culture of New Zealand cricket from a bunch of on their day battlers to a global power in all three

formats.

McCullum is aggressive, tactically shrewd and competitive to the enth degree.

They are similar traits to New England test captain Ben Stokes, who now has the job by default with Joe Root stepped down.

Stokes was the only choice on the table, unproven in leadership but proven by his play on the field.

So essentially it’s two Kiwis at

the helm of England.

It’s hard to knock McCullum’s appointment because he’s a winner and brings the breath of fresh air England cricket has badly needed for some time.

McCullum does not fear the Australians and during an Ashes campaign he will find creative ways to make them uncomfortable.

He will learn on the job and could one day coach New Zea-

land, though there’s a long line of potentially Kiwi coaching successors after Gary Stead like Shane Bond, Daniel Vettori and Stephen Fleming.

From a personal standpoint, I’ll miss McCullum’s insights on commentary.

He is one of the few willing to put friendship aside and be critical and objective when needed.

Those attributes will serve him well in this tough new role.

Hawks grounded in loss to Poneke

It just was not happening for the Johnsonville Hawks on Saturday.

After a week off due to Covid, Johnsonville lost 25-10 to Poneke at Helston Park in their Swindale Shield rugby match on Saturday.

Coach Jason Adamson called it “the worst performance of our season”.

Each team scored just one try but Poneke kicked six penalty goals as Johnsonville’s discipline let them down.

The hosts were not helped by losing halfback Mark Sutton to an injured thumb prior to the game.

Despite having the assistance of the wind in the first half, Johnsonville could not find any cohesion despite opening the scoring through right winger Knox Tuinasau.

“We were our own worst enemies,” Jason says.

“We gave away too many penalties in our own half and Poneke punished us.”

Karori prevail at Wynton Rufer Tournament The Waterside Karori under-11 football team prevailed in their grade at the annual Wynton Rufer tournament at Hutt Park over the weekend.

The event, named after the famed All Whites striker, continues to be a key event for

junior football in the capital and surrounding areas.

When the tournament began it was Wynton Rufer’s desire for a competition that retained the values of participation and enjoyment for players, parents and supporters.

Netball fundraiser at Marsden Samuel Marsden Collegiate and Wellington College faced up in the Marsden gym on Friday for a friendly netball fundraiser.

It was a great contest and a close score, Marsden eventually winning 25-22 with all proceeds going to ‘So They Can’.
