Les would be proud

A combined effort to create the Les Dalton Dog Park in Wainuiomata has seen a piece of wasteland put to use serving the community.

It was also fitting to have the park named after a dedicated champion and lover of dogs, the late Les Dalton and it was even more fitting to have the park opened one year to the day of his passing.

Dog park opens Continued from page 1 Les had dedicated 43 years to working with animal control at Hutt City Council. His family was on hand along with two of his dogs to celebrate the opening.

Mayor Campbell Barry says Les had been looking for the opportunity to create Lower Hutt’s first dog park and after looking at a number of sites he seized the opportunity to build the park in Wainuiomata working alongside advocates in the community.

chase of the old Wainuiomata Clean-fill site and Campbell says to be able to turn what was a negative and controversial site in to a dog park to be proud of is an incredible outcome.

“It is pretty special and most of it is down to Les’s vision,” he says.

Lisa Scott was also a champion of the park having approached councillor Josh Briggs after her dog Max was attacked while out walking in Wainuiomata.

“I am thrilled and excited that Max and Bertha will have somewhere safe to play.”

Les’s daughter Michelle was also on hand and spoke on behalf of the family and said the park is a wonderful celebration of his life.

“We feel truly blessed and absolutely humbled that dads name was chosen,” Michelle says.

In designing the park Cheryl Robilliard from PASO says creating a space that was interesting for both people and dogs was key to creating the park.

“We created lots of choices for people with different sizes of dogs and different temperaments, having different entrances and different paths was important,” she says.

There are a number of further improvements to the park with the possibility of lighting and a shelter.

When a couple experiencing separation need to go to a dispute resolution service, it is important that the wellbeing of the whole family is accounted for.

Family Works Resolution Service (FWRS) supports parents or carers to reach decisions around childcare without the need to go to the Family Court.

FWRS manager Rebecca Pohe says couples going through mediation will likely be experiencing other stresses that might make finding their way to a mutual resolution even harder.

“It’s important for people to be able to function in and out of their lives. If there is a

disconnect, other things tend to slip.”

She says because the dispute resolution service is part of Family Works Central, it means there is easy access to wraparound services that can further support couples or whanau who are vulnerable or need the extra support.

“We’re enabling people to show them what support is out there and – especially for the kids – that the separation goes smoothly.”

Rebecca acknowledges that a crucial stress point during a separation can be finances.

“We get so many clients calling us who are so stressed about the cost of mediation.”

If mediation goes to the

Family Court and a lawyer is required, it could cost up to $400 an hour in lawyers’ fees.

Rebecca says the dispute resolution service is funded by the Ministry of Justice so families who need help may qualify to have the full cost of mediation covered, and if not, the cost would only be a fraction of any lawyer’s fees.

The service provides 12 hours of mediation, including extra coaching and other sessions, over a 12-month period.

Community celebrates new Countdown Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry and Councillor Keri Brown were some of the first shoppers through Wainuiomata’s new Countdown supermarket following an official opening ceremony presided over by the Mayor.

Campbell Barry said that while the opening was a great example of how local government can work with the private sector for great results, the new supermarket is ultimately a watershed moment for the town centre and the community.

“This has been a long time coming for the Wainuiomata com-

munity and our town centre. I’m proud that the partnership between Council and Countdown has got us to this important milestone. ” “Alongside the Masonic Retirement Village development, opening of the dog park, and the planned Queen Street upgrade, a lot of positive things are happening in Wainuiomata.”

“Locals will be able to enjoy better services in their town centre, which will provide a boost for the entire area.”

Mayor Barry says that the completion of the new supermarket does not spell the end of

investment in the area, noting that Council will be investing in the Wainuiomata Streetscape plan, alongside the rest of Progressive’s development within their footprint. .

“Progressive’s staged development provides a once in a generation opportunity within the heart of Wainuiomata. That’s why we are planning to invest in the Queen Street area, which will help bring our community’s vision of a vibrant and safe town centre to life.”

New Zealand needs stronger laws that hold baby bashers to account, sentences that will lock offenders up and provide justice for the young defenceless victims, Darroch Ball co-leader of Sensible Sentencing Trust says.

“There should be no discounts or reductions in sentences for those who are found guilty of physically assaulting, abusing, injuring or killing a child; nor should there be an option for home detention.”

“We need to allow the law to be applied on behalf of the voiceless and vulnerable babies who are being abused in New Zealand at unacceptably high numbers.”

“The fact is our sentencing across the board has become a distant shadow of what the law’s original intent was designed for,” Mr Ball says.

“This needs to change - in particular with the application of the law for child abusers.”

Poems wanted Landing Press is calling for poems about housing for its next collection.

“We want poems about every aspect of housing – owning, renting, homelessness, memories of houses, houses lived in in other countries, political, funny, nostalgic, painful,” says Adrienne Jansen, Landing Press publisher.

“And we don’t just want poems by experienced poets. We want poems from people who maybe have never written before but have a story to tell about housing.”

Landing Press is running small workshops for those keen to write but wanting some help, in partnership with social/community housing providers.

Movin’ March competitions Wainuiomata Primary is among over 20 schools from across the region that have claimed prizes for Movin’March 2021, an annual Greater Wellington initiative that encourages kids and their whanau to walk or wheel to school and reduce carbon emissions.

Movin’March hosts four competitions to reward students for contributing to Greater Wellington’s targets to reduce transportgenerated carbon emissions by 30 percent and achieve a 40 percent increase in ‘mode share’ to active and public transport by 2030.

Greater Wellington travel choice coordinator Kirsty Barr says, “This year we got a stunning 132 schools on board with a combined total of over 37,000 students across the Wellington region potentially taking part in Movin’March. “We counted a total of 162,594 walking or wheeling trips at many of our Movin’March schools

In the WOW passport challenge, schools from all districts in the Wellington region won $400 MYRIDE vouchers for their students.

The winning schools are Wainuiomata Primary, Normandale, Our Lady of Kapiti, Paraparaumu Beach School, Papakowhai, Fraser Crescent, Birchville, St Mary’s Carterton, Fernridge, Berhampore and Ridgway Schools.

Dog tag for life Plastic dog tags are set to become a thing of the past in Wellington City and Lower Hutt, following the introduction of the One Tag for this year’s dog registrations.

The One Tag is a metal tag designed to last a dog’s lifetime. Dog owners will still need to pay their annual registration fees, but they can keep using the same tag as long as they live in their Council’s jurisdiction.

which can’t be recycled.

“Environmental sustainability is really important to our community, so our systems and processes need to reflect that. We’re increasingly moving towards online transactions, so once the One Tags have been sent out this year, we’ll be creating less paper waste too.”

The One Tag is lightweight yet durable and comes in two sizes – 25mm for small dogs and 35mm for larger dogs.

Wellington City Council tags are yellow, while Hutt City Council tags are blue. The back of the tag is blank so owners can get it engraved with their dog’s name or their contact details if they wish.

Under the Dog Control Act

1996, all dogs are legally required to be registered by the age of three months.

Registration is due by 1 July of each year (31 July in Lower Hutt), and owners of unregistered dogs may be charged an infringement fee of $300.

Animal Control Officers can access registration records remotely when they are out on patrol to check whether a dog is currently registered. All dogs registered after 1 July 2006, except working dogs, need to be microchipped too.

inbrief news Scams circulating Eastern District Police are warning the public to be vigilant, following a spate of scams being reported.

We would like to remind people to exercise caution when buying goods online, particularly items listed for sale on social media, Sergeant Nigel Hurley says.

“Offenders have been known to create fake profiles in order to sell items and then block buyers shortly after.

“These incidents of fraud are being reported to Police daily.”

Never give your personal banking information out over the phone and do not allow the caller to access your computer remotely – regardless of what company the caller claims to be from.

If you believe you are the victim of a scam you can contact Police and report the matter via 105.

Wainuiomata icon Tony Watling has written his last ode as the twilight years take their toll. The 94 year old has been forced to give up his passion and move out of the valley. Once one of the countries top tool makers Tony says he moved to Wainuiomata in the early 80’s to work for Brugger Industries.

Having the space and tools to create what ever you want and expert advice on hand is nirvana for men at Wainuiomata Menz shed.

Next to the old tennis court in a classroom block on the old Wainuiomata College site the Menzshed is chocka with all manner of tools donated from deceased estates and people who no longer have room for them.

President of Wainuiomata Menzshed Peter Lawrence says you don’t have to have a project to work on and not all members

are there to make or fix they are there simply for the comradeship, a cuppa and a chat and to share experiences of the years past.

“When we do get the donations a lot of times they need a bit of restoration,” he says.

“Most of the tools we get are either bequeathed or given.”

Everyone wears a name badge and the atmosphere is relaxing with plenty of banter.

Along with the myriad of tools is a space dedicated to model railway.

There are a couple of lawn aerators waiting for attention.

They will be fixed up to a high

standard and then possibly sold to raise funds to keep the club running or it may be given away.

A model railway fills one room and it has proved to be the perfect setup for men who don’t have room at home to run their own locomotives.

“We have people with all sorts of trades and skills, whatever needs doing there is someone who has been trained or has the skills to help out with knowledge or they have the technical skills to get the job done,” Peter says.

There are plans for trips away with the group Peter hopes to get enough interest from members

to take a trip by bus to the train museum in Paekakariki.

“We haven’t done any trips until now and we are going to give it a go and maybe go further afield with future ones, although transport is the biggest problem,” he says.

Current membership is around 22, there is no age limit and there is plenty of room for more members.

“We are open Monday’s ten till midday and then we usually have a sausage or a bacon sandwich or something and then everybody gradually drifts off home,” Peter says.

s 400g chicken tenderloins, cut to even strips s 1 leek, sliced s 100g mushrooms, sliced s 500g jar HEINZ [SERIOUSLY] GOOD™ Creamy Mushroom Simmer Sauce s 1 tsp chopped fresh thyme (or 1/2 tsp dried) s 200g dried fettuccine pasta s Handful fresh parsley leaves, chopped s Grated Parmesan cheese to garnish

1. Heat a dash of oil in a pan. Add chicken and brown over a high heat. Remove chicken from pan and set aside. Reduce pan heat. Add leek and cook until it softens. Add sliced mushrooms and cook a further 2 minutes. Return chicken to the pan. Pour over HEINZ [SERIOUSLY] GOOD™ Creamy Mushroom Simmer Sauce and add thyme. Stir.

Continue cooking for a further 10-15 minutes, until chicken is cooked. Season with freshly ground black pepper.

2. While chicken is cooking, cook fettuccine according to packet instructions. Drain.

3. Serve the chicken and mushroom sauce over fettuccine. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley and a little grated Parmesan if wished.

Hutt based Glennette Marching Club has won another national title.

Traveling to Dunedin to take part was a big ask and it paid off for Wainuiomata’s Shakira Abel-McEwen who was proud to be taking home a trophy.

Mum Elle says, “Shakira was so stoked to do so well all the hard work paid off and they were practicing 3 days a week before Nationals.”

The win follows on from last years success at the North Island champs in New Plymouth with the under 12 team crowned champion team and they also won first in the technical section and only missed out in coming first in the display section by one point.

Elle says it was both of them are looking forward to the new season when her little sister Gia aged 7 will join her in the team.

Its a great sport for commitment, discipline and friendship to.

Wrestling Championship Wainuiomata is about to get a new champ. Valiant Pro Wrestling will be holding it’s Over The Top event at Wainuiomata Intermediate School on Saturday, 22 May, where New Zealand wrestling history will be made as the very first New Zealand All Star Wrestling Champion is crowned.

Valiant Pro Wrestling has been running events with the very best wrestling talent from around New Zealand since 2019 to capacity crowds in Wainuiomata. Until this point though, there has been no cham-

pionship for competitors to vie for or fans to get behind. That is all about to change at Over the Top when 20 men will enter the ring for chance to be the inaugural New Zealand All Star Wrestling Champion in a battle royal style rumble.

Special guest MP Chris Bishop will be on hand to award the championship belt to the competitor capable of outlasting all others and earn the title.

With the chance to make history on the line, challengers from Auckland to Invercargill will be coming to town to make

their play for the new title. While the full list of entrants has not yet been finalised, there are a number of interesting names to watch so far, each one a former champion.

Valiant Pro promotor Hayden Thiele is understandably excited about the lineup for Over The Top. “There are so many former champs coming in for this one because it’s an opportunity to be the first New Zealand All Star Wrestling Champion. The belt will change hands over time, but only one person can ever be the first champ.”

The card for Over The Top will also feature a number of exciting singles matchups. Fans will be in for a treat when Brook Duncan faces ‘Te Tahi’ Vinny Dunn of Auckland. Competing at Valiant Pro for the first time, Vinny Dunn has been one of the most impressive competitors in New Zealand wrestling for years and has held multiple singles and tag team titles.

Valiant Pro: Over The Top will be held at Wainuioamata Intermediate School, 66 Konini St, Wainuiomata on 22 May. Door open at 6:30pm.

Lōemis midwinter festival Wellington’s midwinter Lōemis festival is back with a fantastical mix of theatre, music, gourmet food and craft beer, and a fiery procession inspired by the solstice.

Lōemis (pronounced lew-miss) first kicked off in 2016 and organiser Andrew Laking says this year’s festival is shaping up really well.

I have a copy of an old book called Vitalogy; or, Encyclopedia of Health and Home.

Written by E H. 1822-1875 Ruddock (Author) and reproduced by the Publisher: Franklin Classics (October 14, 2018) in a paperback and hardcover.

This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Available on Amazon and Book Depository.

First published in 1899, Vitalogy is a home health reference, and its advice, both strangely prescient and very dated, is once more at the cutting edge.

As a child I spent hours looking through this book, reading the articles and the cures for all the ailments under the sun.

A theme flowed through the book for good health which included being outside getting sun light (VitD), moderate exercise and a healthy diet of fruit and vegetables.

According to the study, conducted by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), people who garden daily have wellbeing scores 6.6 percent higher and stress levels 4.2 percent lower than those who do not garden at all.

“This is the first time the ‘dose response’ to gardening has been tested and the evidence overwhelmingly suggests that the more frequently you garden the greater the health benefits,” said study lead author Dr. Lauriane Chalmin-Pui. “In fact gardening every day has the same positive impact on wellbeing as undertaking regular, vigorous exercise like cycling or running.”

As part of the study, the scientists researched why residents engaged in gardening. They monitored 5,766 gardeners and 259 nongardeners through an electronic survey distributed within the UK. The results revealed that six in 10 people garden because of the pleasure and enjoyment they get from it.

The findings also indicated that gardening may boost mental health, with those with health issues stating

that the outdoor hobby reduced feelings of depression, boosted energy levels, and reduced stress.

Just under a third of the participants claimed they garden for the health benefits, while one in five said wellbeing is the main reason why they do it.

The study also found that gardening is linked with greater physical activity, supporting the idea that spending time tending to plants is good for both body and mind.

“Gardening is like effortless exercise because it doesn’t feel as strenuous as going to the gym, for example, but we can expend similar amounts of energy,” explained Dr. Chalmin-Pui. What’s more, the findings also indicated that gardening may boost mental health, with those with health issues stating that the outdoor hobby reduced feelings of depression, boosted energy levels, and reduced stress. Plus, eating home-grown fresh produce has benefits for physical health and nutrition.

This study confirms what many passionate gardeners already knew: Something as simple as getting our hands dirty in the backyard can provide immense benefits for our mental and physical health.’

Watling’s brilliance clear yet understated BJ Watling is the quiet overachiever whose efforts for the Black Caps cannot be ignored.

Watling was never destined for the headlines at any point in his career but he has been the workhorse, the quiet-achiever, the man in the engine room who made the past 10 years of success a little easier to come by.

Watling is the best wicket-keeper batsman in test cricket at the moment, a tag he will keep even after he retires following the World Test

Championship final in England next month.

He is the best test keeper we have produced, not bad considering he was a late bloomer to the role.

The 35-year-old has been a stalwart of the Test side since debuting in 2009 as an opener, going on to establish himself as a world-class keeper-batsman and claiming numerous records in his 73 Tests to date.

Watling holds the New Zealand Test dismissals record with 249

catches (excluding 10 as a fielder) and eight stumpings - the best numbers of any current Test keepers.

His bowler-keeper catching combinations with Tim Southee (73), Trent Boult (55) and Neil Wagner (53) occupy the top three spots on the New Zealand record list.

He has eight Test centuries to his name and New Zealand records for the fourth and fifth highest partnerships – 362 with Brendon McCullum against India at the Basin Reserve in 2014, and 365*

with current captain Kane Williamson against Sri Lanka at the same ground a year later.

Watling scored big runs under pressure.

When the chips were down, he was often the one to produce the gritty, stubborn knock to rescue his side.

In fact, it felt at times, he was the best player for a crisis and the worst player to bat with the game under control.

The bigger the moment, the better

the innings.

He’s been an invaluable link with the bowlers too.

I’m sure they have bowled better knowing there was a safe pair of hands willing to snaffle any edge that came his way.

Those looking at the short-term could see Watling’s retirement as a way to get the magnificent Devon Conway in the team, but the reality is that the traits Watling brought to the team will be hard to replace any time soon.

A full day of netball

Ulalei Wainuiomata Netball Club had a full day of netball at Walter Nash Centre with games from 9:30am to 3:30pm.

First game passed off with Premier 1 team Aute playing against the Wellington Mens and Mixed Netball Association team. Ulalei Aute were determined to improve from last weekend’s heavy loss but knew the Men’s team would be a tough ask. The defence combination of GD Cerie Milovale, GK Ria Aberdein-Tapua’ , and WD Kolini Malolua worked well together, shutting down second phase ball from the centre pass, with tight defence marking, making life difficult for the Men’s attackers.

Despite an excellent display of attacking and defensive plays by team Aute, the aerial play and jump shots from the Men’s team proved too much of an ask with

Aute going down 66-46. Captain Sina Tamaalii reflected, “A huge improvement from last week which I am really pleased about. We just need to keep working on our through court play but feeling satisfied with our performance today.”

The match of the day belonged to defending Premier champions Ulalei Pua taking on Convent Old Girls Wahine Toa, where Pua showed signs of their championship form with some magical through court plays. Newcomers Charlotte Tuala, Kayla Faitele, Kara Orr and Renee De Ruyter slotted seamlessly into the team.

With the assistance of experienced shooter Careene Andrews, Team Pua cruised to a comfortable 59-31 victory.

Other matches: Ulalei Fuesina lost to Upper Hutt Rams Karaka 48-13, and Ulalei Moso’oi lost to Stokes Valley RFC 1 32-20.

With the opening round of the Chatham Cup and Kate Sheppard Cup this weekend, there was no game for our top 3 senior teams this weekend.

Saturday started off at Delaney Park where the inform Fiddick’s travelled to face Stokes Valley and nothing seemed to go right for the lads. A missed penalty to Frank Hogan was just 1 of the problems as the home side walked away with a 4-1 win to end the lad’s current momentum.

The Roundballs playing their first game at Richard Prouse put on a show as they ran riot scoring 10 goals to win 10-0 against Upper Hutt. At the same ground, Pacifica beat Porirua City 5-2 while the local derby between Pacifica Originals and The OC’s ended in a 0-0 draw in what was a fiery contest. The Undertakers had a tough ask against in form Lower Hutt and despite a solid effort from the side, they were on the wrong end of a 4-1 scoreline.

Sunday saw just the Under 17’s in action and it was a game of 2 halves.

Going into the sheds 2-1 down against Stop Out, the lads came out in the second half and were unable to maintain the performance and ended up going down 7-2.
