It’s a cliche in retailing but the Nagar’s fine record on the ‘friendly service’ scale warrants some coverage, if only to let their customers know a few things about the couple and the evolving business that they have been linked to since 1989.

With just a four year break when the store was leased as a Star Mart, they have been reflecting on the small five and a half day operation they took over more than three decades ago.

When supermarkets began seven day trading in the early 90s, they followed the trend and extended their shop area to twice what it was in 1989, at a time when Lotto, nor liquor was part of their offering and when the Evening Post newspaper still arrived six afternoons a week. When they returned to the business in 2004 Minaxi added florist services to become a big part of the business which she really enjoys.

“What we have loved here is that our family has grown up with this community as have the children of our customers, and now some of them are parents themselves” Minaxi says.

problem because we knew their house so I just wheeled the child home .... to one quite embarrassed Mum! But after totalling up countless grocery items, selling into around 1800 Lotto draws (with several big prizes won) and stocking newspaper editions numbering into five figures, Dilip and Minaxi have decided to leave the 90-hour working weeks behind and enjoy some good family time.

“We’ve been surrounded by some great retailers and Marsden Village has changed a great deal” they say recalling that specialist stores like fruiterer (Peter Chong), butcher (Martin) and hardware operator (John Watts)

Although we look at how much of the rest of the world is being impacted by Covid-19, with skyrocketing infection rates, deaths and lockdowns, there are plenty of reminders here that our lives are not completely free of the residual effects of our own lockdown period.

Many organisations had to cancel events, AGMs and celebrations during that time, and we’re now in a period of catch up.

I have been attending a large number of these events around the electorate, and one common denominator is a reduction in revenue, even for voluntary groups, making paying their bills and attracting members more difficult.

These groups are stoically pushing on, like all of us awaiting the Covid-19 vaccine which will hopefully allow some normality to return.

News on that front is looking promising, and it will be a good day when the 1pm Covid news briefings become a distant memory.

However as the recent Auckland case shows, we are one careless moment in isolation away from another cluster, so

“We just want to say a huge thank you all round, our suppliers, reps, our family, including my Dad ( Eishverlal, now 83) for their contribution to our business, and of course big thanks to our loyal customers, who have become our friends,” Dilip says.

Former motor mechanic, Dilip says whilst he will surely miss the customer contact, he isn’t going to miss the long days at the shop.

And he adds that he really hasn’t minded the local school children ribbing him and saying he looks a bit like ‘Mr Four Square’ – “well, what’s wrong with an Indian version, anyway? “ he asks.

We in NZ will and are faring way better than most currently, and that will mitigate the economic impacts more than anything else.

That our housing market is way overheated, despite predictions six months ago it would drop, gives some idea of the confidence of Kiwis that we will come out well. Our Government’s focus is on getting some balance into that market so every dollar earned is not being spent on either renting or investing in housing.

And that means building more houses, both in new and existing areas.

We can’t predict how the rest of the world will look, but we need to influence what we can here.

We are back for the new Parliament next week and as your MP in a large and focused Labour caucus, I’m determined we’ll be doing the right thing for New Zealanders today and in the future.

Because as I said at the beginning, the downstream effects of things which happen today impact way into the future.

Community man Bruce Johnson marks 25 years Karori man, Bruce Johnston marked 25 years as President of the Karori branch of the Wellington RSA in a brief ceremony on Friday night. Karori is the last remaining branch of the RSA in Wellington City which has its own clubrooms and hosts regular gatherings of members.

Wellington RSA President, Theo Kuper, paid tribute to Bruce’s service and dedication to the organisation; “At a time when the organisation has shrunk nationally and RSA clubs’ have been wound up all over New Zealand, Karori has survived thanks to Bruce’s dedication and determination to keep the lights on and provide

support to our members.

“Bruce served as an electrician in the New Zealand Army from 1957-1974 and it is no exaggeration to say that The Karori RSA exists because of Bruce. He does everything from providing welfare support to members to physical maintenance of the clubrooms. Bruce organises events and functions for members and facilitates a wide range of activities in Karori to mark Poppy Day and Anzac Day annually”, said Theo Kuper.

Bruce is a Karori community stalwart. He has lived in the suburb for almost 60 years during which time he has support-

ed a wide range of organisations while enjoying the full support of his wife Alison and his four children. In the 2017 New Years Honours list his dedication to his community was recognised with the award of the Queens Service Medal (QSM).

The Karori RSA clubrooms were originally built by local veterans of the First World War and enlarged by a contingent of returning veterans from The Second World War. The clubrooms are just a stone’s throw away from Ben Burn Park where the first New Zealand soldiers to serve overseas in the Boer War, trained prior to departing to South Africa.

Onslow Kindergarten gets helping hand Onslow Kindergarten has been looking after the children and families in Khandallah since 1978. With 60 children on the roll at any given time thousands of children have walked through the doors since it opened.

The kindergarten is now raising funds to enable them to build a new porch/entrance way which will help protect children and their families from the weather as well as making the building look more beautiful and inviting.

“At the moment we don’t have anywhere for our families to shelter under when they arrive in the morning on rainy days, but this project will cost money we just don’t have,” says Onslow Kindergarten Head Teacher Aisha Steele.

Young voices sound-off at St Mark’s Chapel

Jubilant voices filled the Chapel at St Mark’s School last Thursday, as the school hosted ‘The Kids Sing’ Choral Festival.

This is the fifth year St Mark’s has hosted the Wellington event, which is the junior version of The Big Sing, and a celebration of singing for Primary and Intermediate school choirs.

New Zealand Choral Federation chief executive Christine Argyle, National Co-ordinator of The Kids Sing, Emma Billings, Chair of the Wellington Branch of NZCF Elizabeth Crayford, and Juliet Dreaver, Chair of NZCF’s national body were all in attendance as choirs from a number of schools around Wellington came together to perform a range of beautiful choral music.

“We were delighted to be able to put the event on again this year, and celebrate its fifth anniversary in Wellington,” said Anya Nazaruk, Director of Music at St Mark’s School.

“Because of COVID-19, the event had to be adapted from its usual format, but for a lot of the students it would have been one of the only opportunities they have had to sing in front of an audience all year.”

The MC for the day was Anastasia Reid, an ex-student of St Mark’s School who has extensive experience as a choral singer and who is going to study Voice at the New Zealand School of Music in 2021.

Six school choirs from four schools took part in the event this year: St Mark’s School, Samuel Marsden Collegiate School, Kelburn Normal School and Roseneath School.

Karori Book Fair attracts increased interest from book lovers

After being bogged down by covid restrictions, the Karori Community Fair finally took place last weekend with a lot of interest on the part of book lovers throughout the Wellington region.

The Karori Lions and Rotary Clubs who combine forces to run the Book Fair are hopeful of giving several thousands of dollars in funding to the New Wellington Children’s Hospital appeal for equipment funding.

David Watt, co-convenor from Karori Rotary says the two clubs were supportive of this significant project in the capital and hope to be in a position to run the Book Fair again early in 2021.

“Friday was our first day and this produced the best monetary return.

Penny Roy, who grew up in Karori, is now a teacher by trade but has been recognised by the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) for the role she played in mentoring officers at the Afghan National Army Officer Academy in 2018 and 2019.

The Paparangi Scout Group celebrated 50 years in Johnsonville.

Paparangi Scout Group celebrates 50 years Paparangi Scout Group celebrated 50 years at the weekend, with past and present members gathering to share tales of fun, lifelong friendships, and adventure.

Over the years the group has grown from humble beginnings, which started in a small garage with a few cubs (youth aged eight-to-10-yearolds to a troop in 2020 with 14 volunteer leaders inspiring 70 youth aged from five-to16-year-olds with kea, cub, scout and venturer sections.

The Paparangi Scout Hall at 100 Mark Avenue was previously the Johnsonville Garden Centre located in what is now the Johnsonville Mall carpark.

It was moved onsite in May 1987.

Prior to that youth met at various locations including Paparangi School, the school hall, St Oswald’s Church and Methodist Church as it continually outgrew its location.

Many past members and leaders reflected on the success of the group being the strong community spirit and continual voluntary support of parents stepping up to lead and inspire youth – something which continues to this day.

At the celebrations there were many adventure stories shared, with people saying they still regularly tramp with friends made when they were a cub and scout in the late 80s, noting ‘without the skills learned during scouts I would guarantee I would not be here today as I wouldn’t have made it back.’

Group leader, Shannon Murray says the celebration recognised 50 years of volunteering, community service and youth having a great time.

She thanked past and present members and community who have supported the troop.

The group was also proud of two of their members, Olivia Cornell and Zach Bartlett who were presented with their Chief Scout Award at the celebration.

The Chief Scouts award is a culmination of three years worth of scout work engaging in activities such as scout skills, community work, running of camps and activities and attending Leadership development courses.

The last phase is an interview with the Zone Scout leader to discuss their scouting CV. The award for most scouts is the very first significant recognition of the skills they have gained through their scouting career and is recognised on their CVs when applying for their first job

“We promote ‘garden to table’ where what we grow in the garden is then harvested by our residents, cooked and prepared by the residents and then tasted by all – the residents and staff,” explains Cashmere Home and Cashmere Heights Home recreation team leader Linda Lankshear.

Two residents in particular, Maurice and Keith, take special care of the home’s vege gardens and put in a lot of the work, Linda says.

They both moved into Cashmere Home about three years ago and work with the staff when it comes to any planting or maintenance needed with the garden.

Recent tasty creations that have been made from the garden’s produce have included leek and potato pies, and an apple and rhubarb crumble.

“Our residents generally pick what they want to make or let us know what is ready in the garden, so we can suggest

different recipes they might like to try,” Linda explains.

The cooking sessions take place in the home’s main lounge so more residents can help.

“A cooking session can take all afternoon, and the aromatic smells that waft down the hallways make your mouth water!”

Linda says Cashmere Home recreation coordinator Flo Noonan guides the residents with the preparation and cooking process.

“She does an amazing job getting all of the residents involved in some way.”

Deaf musician set to show talent at Jazz Festival

Mary Jane Thomson’s path to music is anything but ordinary.

Mary Jane is a deaf pianist who is performing a solo piece as part of the Wellington Jazz Festival at Thistle Inn next week.

She says while she always loved music, an operation when she was 20 changed her perception “I’ve always been curious, when I was a kid I thought maybe I will be a writer one day, but I remember thinking ‘how does one be a writer…’.

“When I was 20 I had a life changing operation which drastically changed my experience of the world.

“I got this titanium post in my skull behind the ear, which a hear-

ing aid hooks onto, and it suddenly dramatically enhanced my hearing, a sense I’d really been without.

“I was never the same again. In a matter of seconds my experience of the world became drastically different, everything became music and art… I could see things I’d never seen, knew things I’d never known.

“I could hear road works, birds and most of all, I could hear my voice in my head.”

Mary Jane says she has a deep relationship with the piano.

Piano has been my constant companion over the years since the hearing operation.

“I feel tearful to think about it but piano is always there for me and above all instruments it’s the one I just play what I feel in the moment.

It actually doesn’t require much study of musical principles.

“I think with piano for me, it’s all about touch. You can play anything with the right touch.”

Mary Jane says she hoped people would feel a sense of connection from her performance.

“I want people to have a connection to my music, to me, or feel a sense of peace in the venue, with the music.”

She says being deaf has had a positive influence on her approach to being an artist.

“I think being deaf always made me a bit of a rebel… you don’t go down the well-trodden path.

“When I take pictures or write, it’s always with no sound around, and this makes me really focus and concentrate.”

This biannual International event will be hosted by Capital Quilters Inc in Lower Hutt, 4-9 October 2022, and will feature a Quilt Exhibition, classes with international quilting tutors and around 1500 attendees from all over New Zealand as well as Australia, the USA, and even further afield.

“We thought the website was going to crash,” says Debra De Lorenzo, the Symposium convener.

The pre-registration website went live at 9.00am on Saturday 7 November and within 10 minutes there had been 238 registrations. “That was one almost every 2 seconds.” says Debra.

By the end of the day registrations had reached 725 and there are still more coming in as word spreads. “It has slowed down now but we are hoping to reach 1000 by the end of the week.” said Ursula Clark a volunteer helping organize the symposium.

Bernina, who are the main sponsor A Quilting Fiesta, offered a brand-new sewing machine as a prize to anyone who preregisters before 31 January 2021.

The New Zealand Quilting Symposium has been running for 25 years in different cities throughout New Zealand. This unique event has a strong focus on teaching and quilting processes and skills. A Quilting Fiesta hopes to have over 30 tutors and 50 classes for quilting novices and experienced stitchers. There will also be a National Quilt Exhibition at the Lower Hutt Event Centre during the Fiesta.

“What makes the New Zealand Symposium so great is the chance to improve your techniques as well as network with quilters in New Zealand and all over the world,” De Lorenzo. “It is going to be great. In fact, it will be a Fiesta!”

A Johnsonville optometrist is warning people of the damage the sun can do to their eyes this summer.

New research commissioned

by Specsavers has found that 66 percent of North Island residents aren’t aware that the sun can permanently damage eyes by causing things like cataracts, cancer or macular degeneration.

While 91 percent of people are concerned about long term damage to their body, the eyes tend to be forgotten about, with just 27 percent of North Island residents concerned about the long-term damage to their eyes from the effects of the sun.

New Zealand has one of the highest levels of UV in the world, and one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world.

Optometrists around the country are therefore calling for Kiwis to be more sun smart and wear sun protection this summer, and have their eyes checked if they think they might have a problem.

Specsavers Johnsonville Optometrist, Jacob Hong, says it’s important that Wellington residents are educated on both the potential long-term damage and what they can do to prevent it.

“The reality is that living in New Zealand means that we can be exposed to dangerous levels of UV radiation when we’re outside, even when it’s not bright and sunny. While our eyelids are designed to protect our eyes, the skin around our eyes is very thin and contains fragile tissues that can easily be damaged by UV light. UV damage to the eye and eyelid increases risk of serious conditions such as eyelid skin cancers, intraocular melanoma, conjunctival cancers, cataracts,

macular degeneration and more.”

“Unlike skin, where sun damage may be more visibly obvious, it’s not necessarily the case when it comes to the eyes as you may not notice symptoms until well after the damage is done. People may not realise that symptoms such as redness, blurry vision, swelling, light sensitivity, seeing halos and tears can all be possible symptoms of sun damage to the eyes,” Jacob says.

The research found that not only is there a lack of awareness of the implications of sun exposure on eyes, but that almost half of North Island residents (45 percent) admit that they don’t wear sunglasses most of the time when they’re outside. In addition, most don’t necessarily have lenses that provide the right level of protection, with 38 percent owning sunglasses with any kind of UV protection, and 49 percent unsure of what kind of protection their sunglasses have.

“Most patients I’ve seen don’t know what to look for in sunglasses when it comes

to sun protection. The same way you put on sunscreen and a hat to protect your body, you should ensure you are wearing sunglasses that block out UV. I would recommend sunglasses that have polarised lenses because they not only offer 100% UV protection for your eyes, but they also eliminate 99.9% of glare caused by reflected light,” Jacob says.

Concerningly, over half of North Island residents think they only need to wear sunglasses when it’s sunny and during the middle of the day – they aren’t aware that it is important to wear sunglasses at other times of the day such as in the afternoon, in the morning, in winter or even when it is cloudy/overcast.

“Many people believe that sunglasses only need to be worn on a hot sunny day at the beach for example, but regardless of whether it’s clear skies and high temperatures or not, as a preventative measure you should be wearing them every time you’re outside. Even if it is an overcast day, UV rays are still present, so we also want to encourage good sun safe habits for years to come,” Jacob says.

Renovating Before Selling? YIP! Hey Everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful week, with Christmas decoration creeping up in the shops, it is almost time to wind up this crazy year and plan for 2021! With interest rates at a record low, more and more people are changing the house they are in. We get asked a lot about renovating before selling, ultimately it comes down to what to renovate and where to spend the money for maximum net profit.

Firstly, in life, tomorrow is never a given, and one must always remember that it is never always about profit and money. If you are planning on renovating your own home, do what makes you happy and enjoy it!

Although our job is to help you maximise the return on your property, we find that people often put non-financial reasons first. If you want that race car bed, claw foot bath, or that outdoor spa… go for it! In life we spend thousands of dollars a year on things that don’t give us a positive financial return, like coffee, wine, going to events, travelling, more coffee, and we happily do it – What you do with your home should firstly be considered with your heart, then with your head.

But when selling, renovating is a great way to add emotional value! To make that buyer pause and fall in love with your house, just like you did! Here are 5 quick tips for maximising sale potential when renovating!

1. Get it painted! Without fail the most common area of maintenance that homeowners forget about is painting. When it comes to selling, nothing screams needing work than poorly looked after cladding / walls.

The most common mistake we see is homeowners repainting in the same colour. Buyers can visually associate how ‘old’ the paint is by the colour choice, keep up with modern colour trends / what presents best. If in doubt always go for neutral colours. Not only will this add value, but also a well-sealed and painted exterior is an essential part of keeping the house warm and dry.

2. Find the garden balance! When it comes to gardens, a tidy garden presents better. If it is a beautifully curated garden with diverse plantings, buyers who are looking for lower-maintenance living may see the garden as requiring maintenance. Empty planter boxes on the other hand do not present well. For selling, strike a good balance, opt for lower maintenance grasses and fruit trees over fragile flowers and vegetables.

3. Potential price ceilings – Have a look at recent sales and what renovated and unrenovated properties are going for in your area. In today’s modern world stats and sales (with photos) can easily be accessed, your friend in Real Estate can walk you through this

easily too! What you will find, is the return on renovation varies greatly depending on the type of property.

For example, if you spend $150k fully renovating a $500k two-bedroom townhouse, you may find the sale value after the renovation may not be as profitable as spending $150k renovating a four-bedroom standalone house. This what is commonly called ‘over capitalising’ – best avoid it.

4. Sweat the small things – Buyers are treating the house hunting like speed dating and can take a very holistic approach. 5. Cheaper is not always better – The cheapest quote is not always the best company to go for and the proof is in the detail. Poorly renovated properties can give warning signs to buyers – buyers can spot a cheap renovation for profit a mile away! Pay attention to key decisions around the finish and hardware choices. Ask around for recommendations, see examples of work if possible, and keep an eye on the progress as it is easier for the tradesperson to fix things as they happen rather than after the fact. FixIt App visually appealing after upgrade New features on the FixIt app will make it more accessible for low-vision users to report any problems that need fixing around the city.

Following reports low-vision users had issues with the FixIt app not being legible when text was scaled up – the new version supports bigger fonts and works well with the phone accessibility options. The location screen has also been revamped to enlarge the location.

These new features certainly improve the FixIt app user experience for low-vision users, says Mayor Andy Foster.

“Our teams did some testing with our Accessibility Advisory Group (AAG) and the feedback was positive, with comments that the new font options will help make civic participation more accessible for all users.”

Alan Royal, a member of the AAG which gives the Council feedback and advice from the view of people living with impairments, says it’s easier to use now.

“I have looked at the android app which I have already installed on my phone and find it (much) easier to use, especially with the large fonts (it makes mine even larger!).

“Having said that, I have also found phoning Council both an effective and efficient way to get issues (whatever they are) resolved,” he adds.

Councillor Rebecca Matthews, the Disability portfolio holder and representative member on the AAG, says Wellington City Council takes its responsibility seriously ensuring the city is as inclusive as possible.

“It’s good to see we have responded to these issues when they were raised, and resolved them successfully too.

The FixIt app is now easier for Wellingtonians with low vision to use.

“We are always trying to improve on accessibility and our services for disabled Wellingtonians.”

Services include BlindSquare and Kontakt.io beacons, mobility transport, beach wheelchair and scooter hire, sign language and interpreter options to help communicate with Council, and an accessibility directory providing information about places and services available to all.

For Android devices, the new FixIt version can be downloaded from Play Store, and the IOS version in the Apple app store. If the user is already using the FixIT app, then they may have to go to the app store and select the FixIT app, and update when prompted.

GARDENING THIS WEEK Raised gardens: By Wally Richards There is nothing better than a raised garden that is about 60-80cm tall which means no bending to work it.

Raised gardens are best for growing vegetables in; not flowers or shrubs.

Tall growing vegetables such as tomatoes and corn are best grown in open ground or in low raised gardens as you don’t want to have to use a step ladder to harvest.

I had this week emails and phone calls from a gardener who has spent several thousand dollars to build a raised garden out of macrocarpa wood and fill it with organic compost. A good choice of wood as macrocarpa will last for a long time without been tanalised. Tanalised timber has some heavy duty chemicals which are not nice for leaching into the surrounding soil and then into your vegetables.

Wood is an insulator so you lose a big advantage of warming the growing medium when compared to using roofing iron.

I was sent a couple of pictures and this lady’s raised garden which is in a U shape with a walk path in the middle of the U to be able to attend to the vegetables all around with ease except it was only about 30-50 cm tall so a bit of bending still.

Another reason for having a raised garden about waist high is that there is less chance of weed seeds being blown onto the garden. The concern she had was that there is bore for water and having had the water analysed wanted to know if there was any problems using that water. The only thing was the iron content and

that it would tend to acidify the soil over time which would affect most vegetable that prefer an alkaline pH. The simple answer is to use regularly some soft garden lime such as Wallys Calcium and Health. But I noticed in the photo that there were a couple of shrubs growing near the structure.

Shrubs, vines and trees anywhere near a raised garden that is full of lovely rich compost is no good.

I learnt this the hard way a few years ago when I built a raised garden out of roofing iron with 100 x 100 fencing posts at each corner. The structure sat on the ground and about a metre or so away on a fence I had a cocktail Kiwi-Fruit growing.

The first season I had a great garden of vegetables that grew so fast it was hard to keep up with them. The following season the vegetables started off good then stopped and didn’t grow.

It took a few minutes to find out why when I dug down into the growing medium. About 6cm down I struck a mat of fibrous roots, so dense that I had problems cutting through them.

Where did this mat come from?

My cocktail Kiwi fruit which had grown enormous with masses of vine vegetation but lacking in flowers and fruit. Its roots likely through the Mycorrhizal Fungi association in the soil, realised there was a metre high source of the best plant growth food nearby and spread its roots out to it.

Then up into the raised garden with a maze of feeder roots.

After that experience I have only placed my raised gardens onto concrete

There is nothing better than a raised garden that is about 60-80cm tall which means no bending to work it.

or poured a concrete pad to sit them on.

I explained this to the lady that the lovely raised garden she had spent so much on would more than likely be history within a year or so.

To dig out the compost and pour a concrete pad would be a lot of trouble so I suggested on the sides where root invasion could happen is to dig a trench about 50cm deep and about 10cm wide and fill that with concrete. It would also make a mowing strip around the garden which was surrounded by lawn. Problem solved before it happened and another happy gardener.

A simple and the best raised garden is made out of roofing iron 1800 x 634 (3 sheets one cut in half for the ends).

of acrylic paint all over. That’s to seal in the chemicals. You lay one sheet of 1800 iron on the ground with one 600 post at each end. You drill and screw roofing screws through the iron to fix it to the two posts. Repeat on other 1800 iron. Now you have the two sides which you stand up on a concrete pad and the half iron (900 length) will be drilled and screwed to the ends. All screwed up you have a raised garden 634 tall and 1800 x 900. One side of the 1800 should if possible be facing north.

Now treat this like a big compost bin and throw in all your organic material, prunings, grass clippings, sawdust untreated, newspaper, compost, kitchen scraps etc. You are looking to fill to about two thirds with any material going. Then over this you can place

cardboard or newspapers and then a layer of purchased good compost.

This should make it about 30cm from the top edge. Sprinkle the likes of blood & Bone, sheep pellets, chicken manure, Ocean Solids, Unlocking you Soil and some BioPhos. Now another layer of purchased compost about 10cm deep which we are going to plant into with seeds or seedlings.

You will note we are still about 20cm from the top of the iron sides which creates a micro-climate. Spray the plants every two weeks with Magic Botanic Liquid and you will have some of the tastiest, healthy produce you could ever wish for. Building a raised garden as described will reduce growing time of vegetables even in winter.

Tranzurban warns environmental award Green, clean and reliable – was the message that shined through as Metlink operator Tranzurban won the Green Gold category at this year’s Wellington Gold Awards for its ongoing commitment to an environmentally friendly fleet.

As the first company to introduce electric battery powered double decker vehicles to Wellington Central, a first in the Southern Hemisphere, it’s not surprising Tranzurban’s sustainable fleet is achieving recognition. Already the fleet includes 10 EVDD and 225 Euro 6 diesel buses, which all meet the highest global emission standards.

By the end of 2022, 31 new locally built double-decker electric buses (EVDDs) will enter into service across Wellington.

Metlink general manager, Scott Gallacher says, “It’s wonderful to have one of our key operators win the Green Gold category, it recognises Tranzurban and Metlink’s desire to find innovative ways to create a healthier and resilient future.

“Metlink’s strengthened EV fleet will reduce carbon emissions, improve air quality, create a smoother, quieter and more reliable experience for customers while providing valuable upskilling opportunities for our drivers.”

Metlink’s EV fleet sits at 10 and will grow to an impressive 108 buses in the next few years. These

modern vehicles will eventually take 61 diesel buses off the roads, driving a 17 percent drop in carbon emissions and a similar reduction in harmful emissions.

Transport and operations director of Tranzit, Tranzurban’s parent company, Keven Snelgrove says with the EVDD fleet’s environmental benefits already shining through, the wheels have been set in motion to further expand their sustainable fleet.

“This hard-earned win signals what we can achieve and fuels our aspiration to make our region leaders in sustainable transport.

But we’re not resting on our laurels, we’ve already secured $484,708 of funding from the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) and Tranzit will contribute the same amount for our specific project – to convert two of our double-decker diesel buses to electric, which will be a first in New Zealand.

“While our specialist team continue working on the conversion process, we’re looking at other sources of funding from central government and other sources, so we can get even more diesels converted,” says Mr Snelgrove.

EVs play a vital role in reducing harmful emissions that are emitted from petrol and diesel run vehicles, while ensuring an efficient and reliable experience for customers.

Early Christmas special brings free parking to CBD Christmas is coming early to the CBD, with a weekend parking special being offered at Clifton Car Park.

The car park, owned by Waka Kotahi and managed by Wellington City Council, is offering a weekend parking special where the first two hours are free, and then every hour after is $2 up to a maximum of $6 per day.

The offer will run every weekend until Monday January 25 2021, and includes public holidays.

The car park can be entered via The Terrace and has easy access to Lambton Quay and the Cable Car – perfect for a spot of Christmas shopping.

There is also free parking for motorcycles and scooters on the first floor of the main building.

Clifton Car Park is open 24/7 and managed by barrier arms but can be entered and exited at any time.

After the two free hours, it’s $6 maximum per day on weekends and public holidays up until midnight – whereupon a new day session starts.

transport solutions that are smarter for urban environments.

“We’re dedicated to finding smarter, safer ways to meet the growing population and demands for sustainable methods of getting about, so it is really rewarding to see our innovative partnerships receiving recognition,” adds Mr Snelgrove.

The introduction of cleaner transport solutions is integral to Greater Wellington’s goal of achieving carbon zero by 2030.

Mark Dunajtschik earns property honour Wellington property developer Mark Dunajtschik has been honoured by the property industry as this year’s Property Council New Zealand Members’ Laureate, a lifetime membership awarded once a year. Having devoted over 20 years of service to the property sector, Mr Dunajtschik was called “a shining example of ‘property for good’, consistently breaking the often-negative connotations that come with the role of property developer”.

Dunajtschik is a humble man who came to New Zealand as a toolmaker in 1958 to make a new life after an extraordinary plight that saw him imprisoned

by Yugoslav forces in a concentration camp in Knicanin before eventually escaping with his mother to Germany. There he trained as a toolmaker, before spending five years travelling the world and deciding to make New Zealand his home.

After a few months on Kiwi soil, Mark established Precision Grinders, running the business successfully for 25 years. After

retiring in 1987, he dabbled in property investment and development as a hobby, quickly accumulating and adding value to commercial and residential property around central Wellington, developing his unique, hands-on formula for success. As Sir Bob Jones once famously quipped, “all property developers go broke and the only exception he knows is that bugger Mark Dunajtschik, and the reason he doesn’t go broke is because he keeps his property.”

Not only does Mark have an exceptional story, he has also added extraordinary value to the Wellington cityscape and community. Dr Tim Halpine, of Active Feet Podiatry, says type 2 diabetes is increasingly common amongst teenagers, a shocking trend.

“An important tool in the prevention of diabetes is regular aerobic exercise, like walking,” Tim says. “In this sense, walking is the best prescription!”

Type 2 diabetes is much more prevalent among young people who are overweight and unfit. Diabetes is a condition where the blood sugar level is too high, resulting in damage to organ systems.

Regular walking helps calf muscles pump blood back to the heart and improves circulation. It burns calories, helps to maintain ideal body weight, control glucose levels and prevent the onset of adult diabetes.

Dr Vipul Patel - Vipul is an experienced GP, who graduated from Otago University in 2003 and he has been a Fellow of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners since 2010. Tawa’s Stuff the Trailers on next weekend

Tawa’s annual Stuff the Trailers event is back for the first time in 2020 aiming to brighten the Christmas period of those in need.

The annual food drive, which is on again on November 28, is a collaborative effort between Inner Wheel Tawa, Salvation Army and Rotary Tawa and has donated more than 6000 items from its efforts which is supported by both New World and Countdown.

Organiser and founder Carolyn Crutch says the idea came to her after a conversation last year with the Salvation Army.

Carolyn says the success comes from creating a good atmosphere at both supermarkets and the generosity of people in the community.

“We usually run one in May leading into winter and our one in Novermber ahead of the Christmas rush.”

She says gifts for kids and treats like chocolate and lollies were appreciated this time of year while supermarket vouchers were also much needed.

Carolyn says the success of the first event last year caught her off guard but she was thrilled to make a positive contribution to her community at a time when it was most needed.

Firstly, Argentina were tremendous and deserved their victory thoroughly.

The All Blacks were predictable, ill disciplined and we completely lacked desire.

The All Blacks were second to the ruck every time.

The All Blacks were beyond flat, in fact calling the performance flat would be giving the men in black far

too much credit.

The attack has regressed so much, it doesn’t look like we can score a try from depth.

Sam Cane looked lost for words post-match and if he and Ian Foster can’t rectify it soon then this tenure will turn toxic already.

The most concerning aspect was the lack of Plan B, C and D when plan A does not work.

The Pumas hadn’t played in 13

months and yet it was the All Blacks who looked rusty.

There are too many players who seem to think playing in the black jersey is their right.

When this team is under pressure, they wilt.

England showed how to beat the All Blacks at last year’s World Cup and the All Blacks have not learnt from that experience.

The world is catching up and we

seem to be shell-shocked by it.

I have no faith in Foster as a head coach because he has no history of success in the role.

A good second in command he may be, but not even the biggest Waikato fan must say these early signs are not good at all.

The past two weeks have been poor and there’s no adjustments being made.

Reiko Ioane needs to be dropped, Codie Taylor has the yips with his line

out throwing and I don’t think Shannon Frizzell was mentally on the field.

A back-row combination of Ardie Savea, Sam Cane and Hoskins Sotutu may have some value.

The whole backline has lost its spark for whatever reason.

Jack Goodhue looks like a shell of himself this year while Jordie Barrett just does not look up to it.

Ian Foster is on borrowed time.

Karori regain J.R Reid Cup while Johnsonville struggle

A Jakob Bhula century helped Karori regain the J R Reid Cup after defeating Hutt District by 33 runs in a close match transferred to Miramar Park.

The trophy is named after John Reid, the New Zealand cricket great who passed away recently. He played for both clubs during his career.

Karori made 270 for nine in the match-up of last season’s two top teams in the Ewen Chatfield Cup, the tally being based on a 111-run fifth wicket stand between Bhula and Harry Wright.

Hutt were then bowled out for 237 with Tom Lindsay in just his second premier game

bowling strongly to take four for 35.

Hutt were in with a chance as long as skipper Troy Johnson who made 129 was smashing sixes into the bowling green, but the pendulum swung when he was bowled, the match was secure.

Bhula, batting at No 3, made his 106 runs off 102 balls with four sixes and seven fours.

Karori captain Liam Roche also hit four sixes into the bowling greens.

Meanwhile it was another batting collapse from Johnsonville, who were skittled for just 87 batting first against Upper Hutt at Trentham Memorial Park.

Only wicket keeper Gareth Severin showed any resistance with 32.

Captain Rakitha Weerasundara says a few rash shots and a couple of key players missing combined for another low total.

The only bright spot for the team was that they had Upper Hutt six wickets down when they passed the lowly total.

Dale Rayner comes within shot of Wellington title

Johnsonville bowler Dale Rayner has come agonisingly close to the claiming the Wellington Open Singles title at Stokes Valley on Monday.

Rayner met Lisa White from Naenae in an anticipated clash.

It was a tight match in the early ends until Rayner slowly took charge to lead 20-14 in a race to 21.

It looked all but over at that point.

However, White had other ideas and clawed back over four ends to take it 21-20.

At the presentation, Bowls Wellington President Dayle Jackson, commented on the excellent standard of play, and believed either of the players would have been worthy winners.

The men’s final was a repeat of last year’s between Sar Alefosio (Naenae) and Adam Turner (Silverstream), with Turner taking it again 21-15.
