Friends Who Care Charitable Trust have partnered with the Mix in Lower Hutt to provide a new base out of the Trust’s Rowe Parade property.

With funding from the Ministry of Culture and Heritage Lower Hutt’s Mix joined with Friends Who Care to provide programmes for the next three years.

Part of the COVID recovery fund was put toward creative spaces and Mix is one of 54 organisations to receive funding.

Mix is a mental health and disability service provider and the move into Wainuiomata sees their first steps in expanding services.

The house was previously used by Friends Who Care as a place where people with experience of mental illness and addictions could become part of, and drive, the solutions towards their own recovery.

For the past few years the building has been empty but will now become a busy hub, an extension of the Lower Hutt based Mix providing a mental health community day service offering programmes in art and well-being.

New to the Mix and one of the facilitators at the Wainuiomata Mix is Dani Renata.

Dani recently completed a degree in Maori and visual arts design and a masters in professional creative practice in Maori art with honours.

Garry Gerrard, a well-known Wainuiomata artist, has been with the Mix for 22 years and says the idea is to also have an open studio and people can do what they want to do themselves or a set programme doing bone carving or painting in masters.

“For me I think it is coming home and it is going to be great for our community,” Garry says.

One of the big advantages will be for locals, they will no longer have to pay to get over to Lower Hutt to be part of the Mix and the savings on bus fares will make a huge difference for locals, Friends Who Care board member Aroha Puketapu says.

“It is a real blessing for Wainuiomata.”

A firm favourite for Christmas lunch for Wainuiomata Grey Power members was The Aston Norwood Centre in Kaitoke Upper Hutt.

It was a chance to repeat what has been a fabulous experience in previous years and the chance for a trip out of the valley after a challenging year for all.

Hutt City mayor Campbell Barry joined the group along with Wainuiomata community board member Dawn Mckinley and Hutt South Labour MP Ginny Anderson.

Looking forward to the new year the Wainuiomata Grey Power Committee are

currently working with the Lower Hutt Grey Power Association on updating their website content which will see more regular information and snippets available.

Grey Power is an advocacy organisation promoting the welfare and well-being of all those citizens in the 50 plus age group.

They monitor what the government is doing and how that will affect their members – meeting with influential people including politicians, to make their views known.

Grey Power is dedicated to the welfare, interests and concerns of the many people who are over 50 years and is a neutral but assertive voice of influence in the political arena with no party political affiliation.

inbrief news Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington celebrated its newest graduates despite the cancellation of its November and December graduation celebrations.

This week 200 graduates dressed their graduation robes and trenchers to meet with Chancellor Neil PaviourSmith, Pro-Chancellor Dr Di McCarthy, and Vice-Chancellor Professor Grant Guilford, collect their graduation certificates, and have their photo taken in the Hunter Council Chamber on the University’s Kelburn campus..

Graduates who were not able to attend have been invited to join Graduation ceremonies in May 2022.

Grotto all go at the HUB

The Christmas Grotto has been an annual event at the Wainuiomata Community Hub, where the community gather to meet Santa, enjoy the festive decorations and take family photos.

In 2018, the Grotto was moved

into the Hub from the Wainuiomata Mall and HUB Pou Tuiaki, Vera Pazan, took on the challenge of setting up the grotto and making it a magical place to visit every year.

Creating the Christmas atmosphere at the HUB is quite an undertaking with Vera starting on the design for the space a couple of

months in advance.

Vera sets the grotto up in late November, usually to coincide with the Christmas Parade.

This year the grotto is spectacularly set out with lots of Santa’s and reindeer, twinkling lights, a train set, and of course, Santa’s chair.

The community are encour-

aged to come and take photos in the grotto for a food or money koha that will go to P taka Kai. Santa will be visiting the grotto seven times before Christmas, and locals are encouraged to make they check the times out and bring their tamariki to the grotto to say hi.

physically active, they have created our first ever ‘50 things to do in Wainuiomata’ poster.

As a primary school sports cluster, they are trying to expand the 2022 programme of events from not just inter-school sport, but to include active recreation in order to get more tamariki

physically active.

“We have already started to investigate accessing various funding streams that other parts of our region are already accessing to provide more opportunities for our tamariki. As we begin to expand our sports cluster programme, with so many things to do in

Wainuiomata being perfect for weekend/ holiday adventures, regardless of the weather, we thought we would create and launch this document across the community in preparation for a summer of local adventures for young and old alike,” cluster member Matt Pegg says.

The Toi Three Sixty annual residents’ exhibition is a chance for everyone to grab an art bargain with all works $360 or under – and support the local arts community at the same time.

The collection will be shown from 15 – 22 December at Toi Pōneke Gallery.

‘Let your shoulders drop this Christmas’ I heard a podcast this week from John Delony talking about how to reduce anxiety at Christmas.

He mentioned how often we use Christmas as a chance to prove ourselves. You know how it goes. We turn up for lunch with family we often haven’t seen in a while. The subtle message is “Look how good I did this year Mum and Dad, or brother and sister.”

“Look at my car.” “Look at my clothes.” “Look how great my cooking is.”

Why do we do this?

Our family and close friends should be the one place we can relax and drop our shoulders, with nothing to prove.

The urge to prove ourselves often moves to opinions as well. The situation is remarkably familiar – the same people at the same house talking about the same things. Discussions get very heated very quickly.

Whether it is vaccines or politics, before too long things are out of control.

But no one wins those arguments in the long run. So, let’s decide not to engage in that behaviour.

Just have a fun time.

The only fight or competition on Christmas Day should be the one with water balloons.

Consultation over the Three Waters reforms is in the pipeline for Lower Hutt residents.

Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry says there will be an opportunity for locals to engage with the council on the issue.

The proposed reforms would move the management of councils’ water assets out of the hands of the country’s 67 councils, and into four large water entities.

National list MP Chris Bishop just last week jumped in with his own online survey after assuming there wouldn’t be an opportunity for locals.

“Upper Hutt City is running a consultation process to gauge what residents in Upper Hutt think about the proposed reforms. Unfortunately Lower Hutt City Council has decided not to do likewise, so I am running my own one,” Chris says.

Campbell says this is not the case.

“Once we have a Bill from Government, which is expected before Christmas, we will know exactly what is and isn’t on the table. We

will then use that information to engage and consult our residents on what the Government’s proposal will mean for Lower Hutt. This will help inform our own submission, and enable residents to submit in the process as well.”

“This is such an important issue for our city and ratepayers, so it’s important that we get this consultation and engagement right.”

The Government’s Three Water Reforms represents one of the biggest shake ups to local government in decades. From the start, Hutt City Council has been unanimous in its view that our residents must be consulted and engaged on these Government proposals.

reform will have a significant impact on Council, and it is a bottom line for us that our ratepayers are engaged and consulted.”

On the 16th of November, Council’s Policy, Finance, and Strategy Committee agreed to undertake consultation with the community to help inform Council’s submission to the Select Committee process and supply information on what the reform proposal means for Council to help inform individual submissions.

“Now that the Government has decided to make these reforms mandatory, we want to make sure we have all the information available to enable well-informed submissions, including our own,” Campbell says.

Transitional housing blessed

Hutt based Tuatahi Centre celebrates the completion of 22 new apartments for transitional housing.

Just last week a a ceremony was held for the blessing of the 22 brand new apartments in central Lower Hutt.

Forum tackles skills shortage Hutt City Council and the Wellington Institute of Technology Ltd (WelTec) have canvassed the business community to map out a pathway to fill jobs and train people ahead of a multi-billion-dollar investment programme over the next 10 years.

Hutt City Mayor Campbell Barry says that with a secure pipeline of work in the years ahead, it’s a great time for businesses to get involved and for young people to think about a career in infrastructure.

“In order to support the growth that Lower Hutt is experiencing, Council is investing over a billion dollars in infrastructure work right across the city. We need to grow skills and capability locally to make sure we have the workforce to meet those needs.”

“With projects like RiverLink and the Naenae Pool rebuild already underway, getting a job in infrastructure is a fantastic opportunity for locals to literally help build our growing and thriving city.”

“Hutt City Council has an ambitious plan to upgrade our city’s infrastructure over the coming decade. As we upgrade, we want local people to be part of the workforce that will be required - this is good for business, great for communities, and ensures the local economy sees the biggest benefit of these projects,” Hutt City Council Chief Executive Jo Miller says.

“When it comes to choosing contractors to work on these projects, our priorities include favouring employers

who are committed to local labour and local supply chains and making sure workers receive a fair wage for their mahi. We also prioritise partnering with businesses that care for the environment, who are committed to training their workforce, and who take on more young people, including Maori and Pasifika.”

The jobs forum was kicked off by Hutt City Council after discussions with WelTec and Whitireia Chief Executive Mark OIdershaw about the need for a skilled local workforce.

Council then engaged partners Wellington Water, Waka Kotahi, Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce, and Mana Whenua to convene this conversation about the future of work in Lower Hutt.

Wainuomata Tennis Club member Martin Insberg kick started the idea for the installation of a defibrillator at the club after there was a heart attack at Richard Prowse Park, as the football club had their own defibrillator which saved the players life.

He was also keen to see the life saving device installed as Martins father died of a heart attack at home in Peel Place Wainuiomata.

President of Wainuiomata Tennis Club Wendy Paulik says Martin wanted to ensure that if he was on the tennis court and the same thing happened to him this would give him the best chance of survival.

“Martin offered to donate $1,000 towards a defibrillator to be kept at the Tennis Club,” Wendy says.

“Once the club looked into it there was a bit more involved and a lot more expense than we were able to contribute given we will be replacing the courts in the next

five years.”

The club applied for a grant which was turned down so Wendy says she approached Hutt City councillor Josh Briggs who put her in-touch with Justin Arthur at the Hutt City Council.

With Martin’s contribution and funds from the Tennis Club coming to $2,000 the Hutt City Council funded the balance and agreed to maintain the defibrillator.

Wendy says, “ it is a great result for the village community.”

A master craftsman By: Gerald Rillstone After a life time working as a tool and die maker and draftsman Wainuiomata’s Tony Pemberton wanted to keep busy in retirement and started building a brass canon but soon found his real passion lay in making things from wood.

He took up wood turning over 20 years ago and when he retired five years ago he had made a lot of the tools to do the intricate work he had in mind.

Nothing was too big a challenge for Tony he spotted a 17th century chalice

online printed it off and drafted out the dimensions and set to work making the tools he would need to recreate it.

One of the challenges he set himself was to make a Chinese Ball which consists of a ball within a ball within a ball out of wood.

He has sold a lot of his work over the years and has the ideal Christmas gift selection on sale at the Dowes Art Musem in Lower Hutt which has an array of Tony’s work from tiny vases to a quick un pick for sewers, wooden wands, earrings and more.

The cost of Christmas Consumer NZ’s Sentiment Tracker has revealed that two out of five of New Zealanders feel the added cost of Christmas adds financial stress during the holiday season.

One in four feels that expectations from others and social pressure lead to more spending at Christmas time.

“For many people, it’s been a tumultuous year financially – the rising cost of living is really squeezing some households and Christmas is becoming a bit of a financial pressure point. Our Sentiment Tracker shows that to afford Christmas, half of New Zealanders have a Christmas budget to make it through their festive finances,” Consumer NZ head of communications and campaigns Gemma Rasmussen says.

Marketers use the pressure of finding the perfect gift to their advantage over the holiday season.

In the latest episode of Consumer NZ’s Consume This podcast, Dr Paul Harrison – Deakin Business School Department of Marketing unit chair and senior lecturer – talks about how the culture of gift giving at Christmas is used by advertisers.

Phosphate: By Wally Richards Phosphorus stimulates budding and blooming.

Plants need phosphorus to produce fruits, flowers, and seeds. It also helps make your plants more resistant to disease. Phosphorus doesn’t dissolve like nitrogen.

The soil will hang onto phosphorus, not releasing it in to water.

Phosphate is needed by all life forms but if taken in too greater quantities it becomes harmful.

In the distant past phosphorus was obtained from manures, especially bird or bat droppings called guano.

Phosphorus was also obtained from reactive rock phosphate which is a hard phosphatic rock. In most soils it dissolves very slowly.

To make the rock phosphate more readily available to plants man discovered a process of using sulphuric acid, early in the 1900’s and a new agricultural fertilizer was created called super or super phosphate.

It became a boon to agriculture and farming with tons of super being spread to cause fast growth in fields and crops.

Unfortunately like a number of discoveries such as DDT and Asbestos, there was a hidden price to pay.

Super phosphate kills soil life and their demise leads to unhealthy plants.

Not only that, it was also found that super-laden plants and grasses caused health problems in stock including cancers.

I read a very interesting book long ago called ‘Cancer, Cause and Cure’ written by an Australian farmer, Percy Weston.

Percy observed the results of the introduction of super on his farm and the problems that occurred.

The book made me reconsider the use of super in garden fertilizers.

Nowadays I would never use a chemical fertiliser or chemical sprays including any herbicides anywhere on my property.

But I have noticed that even though I obtained good healthy crops and plants, there is some factor that appears to be missing and the crops are not as lush as I feel they could be.

I have often thought that I am not getting sufficient phosphorus in my composts and mulches.

This caused me to do a bit of research on the Internet and found to my delight a company in New Zealand who make a product called BioPhos.

They take the rock phosphate and break it down naturally with micro organisms making it as readily available to plants as super is.

The company sent me an email booklet and it showed trials that proved that not only did BioPhos work as well as super, but actually better as it did not have a ‘peak’ growth on application and gave a much longer sustained release of phosphorus to plants.

Instead of killing soil life it actually supplies new micro organisms to the soil which carry on breaking the natural phosphorus down, meaning that only one application is needed per year unless you are cropping during the winter as well.

Some rose growers and rose societies recommend using BioPhos for better, healthier roses.

BioPhos contains phosphate, potassium, sulphur and calcium at the rates of P10:K8:S7:Ca28.

BioPhos is Bio Certified for organic growing.

It is pH neutral and used at the following rates; new beds work in 100 grams per square metre, the same with lawns but water in to settle.

Side dressing plants; seedlings 8 grams (a teaspoon full) around base of the plant or in the planting hole. Same for potatoes (which do well with phosphorus).

Sowing beans peas etc sprinkle

down row with seeds. Roses and similar sized plants 18 grams or a tablespoon full around plant or in planting hole.

Established fruit trees etc, spread at the rate of 100 grams per square metre around drip line or where feeder roots are.

Apply to vegetable gardens in spring and a further application in autumn if growing winter crops.

Can be applied to container plants also, and to tomatoes when planting or side dress existing plants.

When you obtain your BioPhos you will notice it consists of fine powder to granules with pellets of sulphur and odd splinters of wood.

These, including the wood, are all part of the product not messy packaging.

The lumps of granules actually contain 4,888,000 fungal colonies to aid the breakdown and enhance your garden soils.

If you have concerns about your health, the health of your family and you want to avoid illnesses such as cancer if possible, then grow as much fruit and vegetables as you can without chemicals.

BioPhos is biologically manufactured using an internationally patented thermophillic composting technology.

CCDHB reaches 90 percent fully vaccinated On Monday 29 November Capital & Coast DHB reached the milestone of vaccinating 90 percent of the eligible population against COVID-19, the second DHB in the country to do so.

“We are delighted to have 90 percent of people in the Capital & Coast DHB region fully vaccinated.

It is a testament to the hard work and dedication of thousands of people across the region, as well as the incredible collaboration between Maori and Pacific providers, PHOs, the local pharmacy network and the DHB,” Chief Executive Fionnagh Dougan says.

“From the beginning we have

taken an approach of using familiar places and familiar faces to help ensure people who are most at risk or who may have difficulty accessing health services can get vaccinated in a way that makes them feel comfortable and safe. We are now seeing the dividends of this approach.

s Pork ribs s 1 tablespoon brown sugar s 1 tablespoon white sugar s 1 teaspoon sweet paprika s 1 teaspoon smoked paprika s 1 teaspoon granulated garlic s ½ teaspoon ground black pepper s ½ teaspoon ground cumin s ½ teaspoon granulated onion s ¼ teaspoon Greek seasoning (Optional) s Barbeque sauce

1. Preheat the air fryer to 180 degrees 2. Strip the membrane from the back of the ribs, cut the ribs into 4 equal portions.

3. Combine brown sugar, white sugar, sweet paprika, smoked paprika, granulated garlic, pepper, cumin, onion, and Greek seasoning in a small bowl. Rub spice mixture all over the ribs and place in the air fryer basket.

4. Cook ribs in the air fryer for 30 minutes, turning after 15 minutes. Brush with barbeque sauce and air fry for 5 more minutes.

It’s not so much what he’s done with the team, it’s the fact he’s done so little to instil confidence in his coaching ability from his many doubters.

Make no mistake, there’s no way the New Zealand Rugby Union will sack him before the 2023 World Cup, it’s just not how they operate.

However, only the most ardent Foster supporter would be of the belief the team is in good shape, two years out from the big tournament.

Many asked when we would see Foster’s best XV picked.

The answer seems to be that Foster doesn’t know what that looks like.

many grassroots fans, is they predicted the level of mediocrity and now it is playing out.

The team, much like in the semifinal against England two years ago, seems to be lacking a plan B and C when Plan A fails.

It will be an uncomfortable summer for Foster as the pressure mounts and he can do nothing more than grin and bear it.

The jounior section of the Wainuiomata Softball Club battled a strong northerly during their recent game against the Upper Hutt Demons.

The Under 9 Manu Teeball Team are a team of players who range

between 7 and 8 years old.

Coach for the team Cherie Fisher says unfortunately this time around the team lost in 24-21 to the Upper Hutt Demons but look forward to a better result next game.

“Considering the wind was wild, all the kids played extremely well,” Cherie says.

Libraries challenge tamariki to read and play this summer Hutt City Libraries’ popular summer reading challenge for tamariki began on the 1st of December.

The Big Read has been running during the summer holidays for over 10 years. Last year over 1,000 participants read over 14,000 books and completed over 3,000 activities.

Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry says that the challenge encourages school-aged tamariki to

continue reading over the summer holidays to combat the “summer slide”.

“We know that during the summer months a slip in literacy levels can occur over the long break.

As a Council, it’s important that we promote our libraries to help improve literacy rates in Lower Hutt, and supporting the Big Read is a fun and accessible way we can do that,” Campbell says.

Every time tamariki finish a level

they get an entry into the prize draw. The more they read and play, the more chances they have to win.

This year’s prizes include experiences and books from Cupcake Sweeties, Gecko Press, HangDog, Queensgate Shopping Centre, Schrödinger’s Books, Staglands, Zealandia, with more to come.

This year there has been a focus on incorporating more Te Reo Maori into the programme, with new levels - Kokano (Seed), and Pihinga (Seedling), M huri (Sapling), and K hure (Tree) - representing children’s growth through their engagement with literacy.

Tamariki can pick up a booklet from their local Hutt City library or hub, download a digital copy, even grab a booklet from a lo-

cal café or community centre.

They fill out the booklet with the purakau (stories) they read or listen to, and the takaro (play) they have done, then visit a library or hub anytime over summer to enter the prize draw.
