Wainuiomata basketballer Jyordanna Davey was named Hutt Valley District Health Board Young Sportswoman of the Year last week.

Jyordanna recently accepted an offer to study at Auburn University at Montgomery in Alabama.

Her achievements this year include selection to the National Women’s Basketball League (NWBL) for the Capital Swish and the Rongomaiwahine Maori Women’s Team who placed third at the Maori Nationals where she is representing at a level well above her age group.

She was a member of the Under-17 Basketball Hutt Valley team that finished second at Nationals where she was also named in the tournament team.

She has achieved selection in both the New Zealand Maori Under-17 team & the NZ Under-17 squad.

Jyordanna completed a sterling year with selection for the Junior Tall Ferns, though due to covid no final team was selected to travel.

She was a recipient of the Tania Dalton Scholarship for Basketball and was selected in the Steve Adam Invitational, playing in the winning team.

Bill Byrne (Ngati Porou), was inducted as a “Hutt Valley Legend,” joining the ranks of Ewen Chatfield, Irene van Dyk and Naomi Shaw.

Dogs not allowed Keep dogs away from Hutt River and Wellington Harbour beaches Greater Wellington is urging dog owners to keep their dogs away from the Hutt River and Wellington Harbour beaches until staff have checked these areas for dead possums poisoned with 1080.

Recent heavy rain from early morning, Tuesday 31 May 2022, may have washed dead possums, poisoned with 1080, down the

Hutt River and into Wellington Harbour. This is as a result of a possum control operation on Friday 27 May 2022 in the Kaitoke Regional Park and the Hutt Water Collection Area.

Greater Wellington are erecting warning signs and checking beaches from Petone right through to Pencarrow. Once the level of the Hutt River has gone down, staff will check both sides for possum carcasses from Te Marua to Petone.

Bringing you that 1920s Razzle Dazzle this year It’s been a slow start to 2022 for the Wainuiomata Little Theatre with Covid forcing a rethink of plans. However, things are now well and truly back on track with Chicago as the production for this year. Planning has already started for the show with auditions being held in a few weeks to bring the show to the Wainuiomata stage in November.

Chicago is Broadway’s longest-running American musical. It’s a dazzling and satirical look at fame, justice, and the media machine. Set in 1920s Chicago and based on real-life murders and trials, Chicago follows two “Merry Murdresses” Velma and Roxie, who meet in jail.

They vie for the spotlight and the headlines, ultimately joining forces in search of the "American Dream":

fame, fortune and acquittal. This sharp edged satire features a dazzling score that is as addictive as gossip rags and as unforgettable as any trial of the century.

Director Tony Gentle is looking forward to directing the show and bringing it to the stage. “The music is timeless and despite the subject matter, the script is funny, intelligent, and engaging”.

If anyone is interested in being involved in the production but doesn’t want to be on stage, there are plenty of things that go on behind the scenes. Things like set building and stage crew to name a few. Get in touch if you are interested.

Auditions for Chicago will be held on the 11th and 12th of June and the production dates are the 2nd to the 19th of November.

Winter is Coming!

Garlic cloves are traditionally planted on the shortest day of the year (which is getting close; the 20th June) to be harvested on the longest day 21st December.

Any time from mid-May to mid-July is good for planting your garlic cloves..

There are ample good reasons to grow garlic; from its health benefits to the aromatic flavoring and taste that the gloves give to your meals.

You could not have garlic bread without garlic!

Garlic used to be an easy crop to grow before the dreaded Garlic Rust struck everyone about 3-4 years ago.

The rust has made garlic growing for commercial and home gardeners much more difficult but there is a solution that I developed and used last year called Cell Strengthening which is achieved by getting good amounts of silica into the plants while they are growing.

More on this soon.

Planting your garlic cloves around this time and what you harvest 6 months later will depend greatly on what you do at planting time and during the growing season.

The best place to plant is in a sunny sheltered spot. Garlic loves frosts so no protection is needed.

Soil preparation: Garlic prefers a friable soil so that its roots can penetrate and the bulbs can swell easily.

I loosen up the top soil with a rake or hoe to make a fine tilth.

Then sprinkle BioPhos, gypsum, Wallys Unlocking the Soil, Blood & Bone, Sheep Manure pellets (Or chicken manure if you have it) and Wallys Ocean Solids over the area and rake it in.

I then place the cloves about 6cm apart into the soil with their points facing the sky.

Then I cover the cloves carefully with purchased compost such as Daltons or Oderings so that the cloves are covered and buried about 25mm under the compost.

I then sprinkle some Unlocking your soil over the compost.

When the first leaves from the cloves appear above the mulch then make up the Silicon and Boron Cell Strengthening Soil Drench mixed with water and give each plant a drench over the foliage and into the root zone.

You will repeat this again about a month later.

What we are doing is getting a good amount of silicon into the soil which will be taken up by the roots of the garlic because of the boron additive.

With the foliage up you can now start a spray program by mixing the Silicon Cell Strengthening spray with the Silicon Super Spreader together into a trigger spray with water.

I like to add Magic Botanic Liquid (MBL) to this spray for its many benefits.

The spray once made up keeps well and you only need to shake it each time prior to application over the garlic foliage.

Spray regularly while the garlic is growing once or twice a week.

Now is the time you will apply a mulch over garlic.

Garlic loves mulch and mowed leaves are ideal.

There are ample leaves around at this time of the year and these can be run over with a rotary mower and the resultant shredded leaves layered over the compost.

Alternative would be either pea straw, weed free grass clippings or more good compost.

Make a mulch layer about 5cm thick.

After this keep the area between the garlic bulbs free of weeds.

When the foliage pops through the mulch you then spray regularly with the Silicon Cell Strengthening spray with the Silicon Super Spreader.

Once a week or more often it you are passing.

The Silicon and Boron Soil Drench comes in a 500 mil bottle used at 10mils per litre to cover one sqM of area. (Shake well before using) The Silicon Cell Strengthen spray is in a 250mil bottle mixed at 5mils into one litre of water with one fifth of a mil of the Silicon Super Spreader added per litre.

(1 mil into 5 litres of water with 25 mils of Cell Strengthening spray) A 1mil pipet is supplied for measuring.

Alternative you can obtain a 500 mil bottle of Cell Strengthening Spray with the spreader already added.

Used at 5 mils per litre of water. I make up the spray in a one litre trigger sprayer and leave it where the garlic is growing and give it a shake and spray.

our Mail Order web site) The silicon cell strengthening products are ideal for tomatoes, potatoes and other plants affected by the psyllid. The spray can also help control curly leaf disease on stone fruit.

Traditionally harvesting of garlic is on the longest day of the year ( 21st December).

It is better to wait harvesting till after the all leaves start to go yellow, which often happens around mid-January.

Harvesting earlier might mean the bulbs aren’t as big as they could be.

Harvesting later might mean the bulbs split, or in extreme cases start to deteriorate.

To harvest, use a garden fork or something similar to loosen the soil, and just pull up the plant up gently by its base.

After lifting leave the leaves on, because during the drying process the goodness from the leaves goes in to the bulb, increasing its size and making it even more yummy and nutritious.

Clean off the dirt from the bulb and dry it for a few days lying on a dry surface in a dry area such as a carport, then store it by hanging in a dry place out of the sunlight.

Tying clumps of five or ten together by the leaves and hanging under a carport or shed roof works well.

When dry, the plant tissue is very absorbent and will even absorb moisture from damp air and turn mouldy.

Once nice and dry I prefer to store the bulbs indoors in a cardboard box in a dry room or shed where condensation is not a problem.

John Lomax Classic a success

The Wainuiomata Rugby League Club welcomed back a legend and raised money for their future last week.

There were 40 “golfers” from all over Te Whanganui a Tara and beyond at the Wainuiomata Golf Club for the inaugural Johnny Lomax Classic.

A somewhat last minute idea to bring friends and whanau together to celebrate not only a club and community legend and former NRL and Kiwi player, but for the great cause of raising money for the Wainuiomata Lions Rugby League Club.

Players assembled early for a cuppa and a short briefing before hitting the tee blocks, playing a four-person ambrose format.

The day was capped off with a BBQ kai thanks to the generosity of Rob at Cameron Harrison Butchery and an auction event with some great sports memorabilia up for grabs.

But that didn’t stop them from having their first win of the season against St Orans Netball Club 50-48. “Communication has been something we've been working on from the start of the season, and it is starting to show with some great team work on and off court,” says coach Poni Smith. Shooters Sina Tamaalii and Dayna Kosega displayed their skills in the goal circle with some slick passing and long shots. Aute enjoyed playing with two of their international stars, Te Araroa Sopoaga and Denva Shaw-Tait who are on a break from the USA. Te Araroa is on a university basketball scholarship and Denva Shaw-Tait on a university softball scholarship.

Senior 2 team Fuesina had a good 33-22 win against NNCU 7. The young guns showcased their skills at both ends of the court with strong defence creating turnovers and bringing the ball effortlessly down court to shooters Drew McLeod and Lagi Smith-Saleupolu slotting the ball through the net with ease.

Reserve 2 team Laga’ali lost 38-32 to HSOG 5 after a strong come back in the final quarter.

Senior 4 team Moso’oi enjoyed an emphatic 30-9 win against NNCU 8 to finish the day.

“We started off really strong and carried it right through to the end,” says captain Summer Murray. “Our shooters Aja Te Aho and Jodee Tuisila were in the zone and the midcourt kept the pace up both attack and defence. And to have two mothers and daughters, niece playing together shows our club is all about aiga/whanau”.

Wainuiomata fall to Johnsonville in close contest Wainuiomata were left to lament missed opportunities in the 18-13 loss to Johnsonville in their Swindale Shield rugby encounter on Saturday at Helston Park.

Wainuiomata coach Daniel Smith says the team was competitive once again this season but “left points out on the field” in the first half which eventually proved their downfall.

“I can’t fault the effort, we didn’t make the most of our opportunities.

“We’re putting it together for 30 minutes when we need to be closer

to 80 minutes.

Johnsonville played into the wind and the sun in the first half against visitors Wainuiomata, and they scored the first try of the game inside 5 minutes when first five Levi Grace provided a short pass to lock Serge Hollis, who drew his man and sent right wing Jed Mitchell away in the corner.

straight away, from a scrum on Johnsonville’s 22, fullback Jason Love injecting himself into the line and passing to wing Niko Patelesio to score their first try to make it 5-5.

The flow of the game soon slowed down, with both sides missing penalties over the next 20 minutes, before Johnsonville re-took the lead with their second try following a break in general play to Mitchell, some nice interplay by locks Hollis and Tayne Laird-Mahu and then a try out wide to fullback Jacob

That’s how the game finished, Wainui now sitting sixth on the ladder, just four points behind second place Lower Hutt.

In the other games, the Reserves bad luck to the season continued as they were unable to find their rhythm against Victoria University as they lost 2-0 keeping them bottom of Capital Three. The Thirds bounced back from their defeat a week ago with a comfortable 3-0 win against Victoria University which sees them climb to fourth on the table. Goals to Josh Wilkie, David Sinnott and Daniel McNatty who made his senior debut for the club. The Roundballs made it three wins in three weeks as they beat winless Naenae 2-0 at Naenae park.

With no game for Halfbaked and the Horns, it was onto the Masters sides where the Undertakers conceded a last minute goal to lose 2-1 to Western Suburbs. Pasifika’s unbeaten run was extended to six games as they came from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 against Western Suburbs thanks to a hat-trick from Bertram Hendricks. This will help the sides confidence as they head into next weeks game against first place and also unbeaten Eastbourne.

The OC’s were unable to find their mojo as they were beaten 4-1 by Eastbourne.

Sutton then kicked a second penalty with about 15 minutes to play to make it 18-13 to Johnsonville, following a big run down field by himself.

Daniel admitted his team’s top eight chances were likely over but he saw the next four weeks as a chance for his side to get back enjoying their rugby and playing with freedom.

Wainuiomata will face Avalon on Saturday.
