Ryan won the award as club volunteer of the year and also the Photomac Photographer of the Year award. Leanne won the club service award.

“Wainui is so very lucky to have Ryan Imray part of our club,” the club’s nomination for club volunteer of the year says.

“He spends countless hours doing everything and anything that he can for Wainuiomata Football.

“Ryan works as an Emergency Call Taker for Wellington Free Ambulance. However he still puts in time and effort for his football club and the football community as a whole.

“Mainly known as Imray’s Snaps, he uses his platform to capture moments on the football field for people to cherish.

“He even captures moments off the pitch in his ‘around the grounds’ albums to capture memories amongst those who are not on the field as he believes a football club is not just defined by the people playing the game but the people behind the scenes as well as parents, partners [and] supporters.

“A big advocate for the women’s game, he never shies away from promoting women’s Football and he never hesitates to head out to the lower league matches, games photographers tend not to go to.

“When he isn’t at work or isn’t on the sideline, he is at committee meetings giving his input and feedback on how to improve football within the community.

“He even writes articles for the local newspaper.

“He gives his time, sacrifices

sleep and drives all around Wellington going to games for free, without asking for anything in return and always with a smile because all he wants to do is give back to the football community and make every single member feel included.”

“Those of you who have been to any football ground in the past couple of years would have likely seen Ryan behind the camera,” the club’s nomination for photographer of the year says.

“He is pitch-side rain, hail or shine taking snaps of the community game.

“This year his work has been rewarded as he went from his usual home at Prouse to taking pictures of some of the world’s best players at a sold-out stadiums in international fixtures and the recent Women’s World Cup.” Leanne was the surprise winner of a club service award.

Unlike the other awards where finalists are announced, the club service awards are only revealed at the awards evening.

Known as the “Club Mum” Leanne fixes problems, delas with complaints, loves her club and loves the the club members, who she refers to as her family.

Leanne is never without a smile.

She has held every position within the club except the club photographer.

Leanne juggles the life of a wife and mother to her three children with being a club committee member, Junior Convenor and Club Administrator.

Every decision she makes, every task she takes on – even is she already has enough on her plate – she does with the club at the forefront of her mind and all because she wants to help however and wherever she can.

Leanne announced she was hanging up her boots at the end of the 2021 season.

However she came out of retirement in 2022 to help the women’s team who were short on numbers, allowing Wainuiomata to field a

team. Once again she announced she was retiring after the season.

She continued playing, though, and was awarded the club’s prize as the top women’s goal scorer in 2023.

Leanne “epitomises what it means to be a member of [the] Wainuiomata Football Club, putting all members of the club first and making sure all visitors to the club are felt welcomed,” the club said in nominating her for a club service award.

Pioneer Church art show The Wainuiomata Pioneer Church is hosting its art show on Sunday 5 November.

Running from 1pm to 4pm the show will feature a long list of local artists.

There will be paintings by 13 former Wainuiomata Art Society artists – Ora Eddy, Isobel Mulholland, Shirley Spiers, Margaret Storey, Sheila Clegg, Dale Minifie, Monica Moore, Yvonne Benham, Chris Lister, Merik Paulik, Eileen Brooks, Daphne Todd and Rhonda Batchelor.

Zack Furniss wins NZ title

Wainuiomata’s Zack Furniss is a New Zealand motorcycle trials champion.

Zack won the Clubman grade at the New Zealand Trials Championship, hosted by the Tauranga Motorcycle Club with the support of Waikato trials members over Labour weekend.

In taking out the victory Zack defeated the three times title holder Gavin Fox from the South Island.

Not only did he take out the overall victory, Zack also won all of the three days competition in the Clubman grade.

In fact he finished with no points lost on day three, surprising many people, especially given his young age. Zack is 11 years old.

The competition was close at times, with Gavin pressuring Zack.

He will move up to the Sportsman grade next year, where he will again be the youngest in his class.

“If he continues to progress as he has been, he has a very good chance of winning that grade at next year’s National Titles Championships,” Zack’s father Wayne Furniss says. Football fun day a huge success More than 100 local tamariki enjoyed the beautiful game od Football at Ulalei’s inaugural M ori and Pasifika Soccer Fun day held at Wise Park on Labour Weekend.

The event, which was designed to help increase the number of M ori and Pasifika tamaiti playing football, was made up of 18 teams, all coached by parent volunteers, and refereed by Wainuiomata Association Football Club youth players.

Participants played five games, and enjoyed a skills session run by Capital Football.

“We are delighted with the event and the massive response from our M ori and Pasifika community,” says organiser Katrina Barclay.

“We could see by the smiles on their faces that tamariki had a ball and the feedback from the parents and supporters has been positive, which is encouraging.”

Meanwhile, Ulalei’s all-Wainuiomata primary school competition will start in early November.

“Our fun day is a great starting point for this kaupapa,” says organiser Scott McLeod.

Valuable learning experience One of the rangatahi at Wainuiomata-based TRM Training, Rangiapiti Deys-Taute, gained valuable experience when he helped carve the pou that hold up the new Welcome to Wainuiomata sign.

Rangiapiti gained this mahi toi experience under his kaiako Tiaki Puketapu-Dahm, who carved the pou.

He has now graduated from the 10-week TRM Training course and is employed by Fulton Hogan.

Rangiapiti is about to embark on his first stayaway in the Wairarapa to carry out important infrastructure mahi for Fulton Hogan.

Rangiapiti has a gift for sketching and carving, Tiaki says.

“He demonstrated these talents when he picked up his first chisel and carved out his first line.

“As kaiwhakairo we look for those who have natural gifts and talents and then we create opportunities to nurture that talent.

“This was one rare opportunity to do that.

“This was a good colab of a

number of generations including my koko Te Riria Puketapu who encouraged me as a rangatahi to carve, then my uncle Ihaia Puketapu who is the master carver in our whanau who has carved the pou on Matiu Somes Island and Remutaka Forest Park amongst some of his ‘ringa raupa mahi whakairo’ carved works in our region.

“We must grow this work deliberately in rangatahi or it may be lost.

“So that is our focus at TRM Training – to teach the basics and see who picks up the chisel and carries on with the mahi,” Tiaki says.

TRM provides the only training available for rangatahi in Wainuiomata.

Otherwise they pay up to $50 a week on public transport to attend tertiary education in Te Awakairangi the Hutt Valley.

This training “enables them to discover their gifts and talents or what we call in TRM Training as ‘Mana Ake’ or your own unique God given talent and gifts,” says Aroha Puketapu of TRM Training.

Photos to give to families Xmas event performers wanted

Wainuiomata resident Wira Te Paa is on the hunt for people or their wh nau who feature in a series of photos she has taken.

Wira, who is well known for her community service, particularly with older people, took dozens of photos when she worked for the Housing Corporation between 1979 and 1998.

She currently has these in an album and the photos feature various former Housing Corporation staff and tradesmen who worked for the corporation at various events and function.

Wira is concerned that the photos may well be lost should be pass away. When that does happen, she says, the photos will probably be just thrown away.

She is keen, thereforee, to find either the people in the photos or their wh nau and give them their

Local performers are being sought for this year’s Christmas in the Nui. Running from 10am to 3pm on Saturday 2 December at the Wainuiomata Town Centre, Christmas in the Nui is brought to town by Kokiri Marae Health and Social Services and TiHei Rangatahi, supported by Love Wainuiomata.

The organisers are now reaching out to people who may want to perform at the event.

People can register by visiting the Love Wainuiomata Facebook page and clicking on the link which begins: “Sign your club, organisation or small group up to showcase your talents.”

“We know Wainuiomata breathes talent,” Love Wainuiomata says.

Audi equipment will be provided

on stage, and there are no fees for the performers.

Each set will be up to 15 minutes for single performers and up to 30 minutes for groups of two or more people.

“It would be great to have your Haka group, cultural group, individual or small groups that want to participate in this event for our community,” the organisers says.

“We are strong on strengthening our community and we would love to have you be a part of it.

“We are so excited to have our community come together to celebrate and end the year on a high.

“With uncertain times we think it’s important to create an atmosphere that promotes whanaungatanga by creating a space for families to come together and

celebrate the beauty within our community.”

Good news for commuters Good news for bus commuters in terms of ongoing reliability of the service was announced on 20 October.

Greater Wellington Regional Council and bus operator Kinetic, formerly known as NZ Bus, announced an agreement has been reached to increase driver wages.

The funding agreement comes after the Government provided additional funding to increase driver wages to an effective average pay rate of $30 an hour.

Drivers are the backbone of public transport and the pay increase is rec-

ognition of the essential service they provide to communities across the Wellington region, Metlink Group Manager Samantha Gain says.

“The announcement is fantastic news and a reflection of the productive meetings we have had with Kinetic to work through the complexity of historic pay calculations, contractual obligations and the ratepayer and central government contributions so we can speed up payments to drivers,” Samantha says.

Paying drivers what they are worth has been an important focus for the

council in this triennium, Thomas Nash, Chair of Greater Wellington’s Transport Committee, says.

“We are very pleased to have everything in place now so drivers can get the back pay that they’ve been waiting for.”

Kinetic, along with other Greater Wellington bus operators, has committed to the payment back dated to 1 April.

Calum Haslop, Head of Kinetic in New Zealand, says the agreement was welcome news.

“We were delighted to inform drivers that we now have confirma-

uplift from the Government’s $61m Climate Emergency Response Fund (CERF). The fund is available to Public Transport Authorities (PTAs) over four years to improve driver recruitment and retention.

CERF is subject to PTAs matching Crown funding and bus operators agreeing to increase wages to at least match future wage indexation on an ongoing basis.

All parties, as well as unions, agreed to the uplift, which sees Metlink bus driver wages increase to an average of $30 an hour in urban areas and $28 an hour in the regions.

The Wainuiomata Community Board will consider four applications for grants from the Community Engagement Fund at its meeting this evening, 1 November.

The Wainuiomata Community Board is allocated $8,607 a year from this fund to support local activities and events that directly benefit the Wainuiomata community.

Four organisations have put forward applications that the board will consider.

The Wainuiomata Community Garden Group has applied for $800 to buy two fruit trees, remove rubbish, pay tip fees, buy plants and shrubs, and spray and to pay the cost of weed eater running.

Nourish Trust has applied for $2,000 to provide 78 Christmas hampers for families located in Wainuiomata.

Wainuiomata Pioneer Church has applied for $627.87 for maintenance of the old heritage church (Heritage NZ category II), grave-

yard and garden surrounds.

Wood Hatton Playcentre has aplied for $517.50 so six volunteer member of the playcentre can attend a refresher first aid course.

The total amount requested is $3,945.37 of the $8,607 available.

Hutt City Council’s Democracy Advisor, Judy Randall, will speak on a number of topics, including the proposed amendments to the Control of Animals Bylaw 2018.

One good win for cricketers

Despite two great late contributions from Ben Coddington and Liam Mcgee the Wainuiomata cricketers were unable to post a winning score in their match against Karori on 28 October.

Ben scored 49 not out and Liam 26 not out from just 22 deliveries to lift Wainuiomata to 113 for three in Cricket Wellington’s T20 competition.

Ryan Jackson also batted well for Wainuiomata, scoring 20 from the 22 balls he faced.

Karori took just 13 overs to pass the Wainuiomata total, scoring 114 for the loss of one wicket.

As well as performing outstandingly with the bat, Liam also bowled well, taking the only Karori wicket to fall at a cost of 19 runs.

Wainuiomata people still have to wait to see who will represent them in Parliament for the 2023-26 term.

National’s Chris Bishop led Labour’s sitting Hutt South MP Ginny Andersen by 1,094 votes on election night.

While it is unlikely that Ginny will overtake Chris once special votes have been counted, it is still possible.

In the 2020 election Ginny picked up around 1,500 more votes than Chris, extending her winning margin to 3,777 votes.

However the effect of Covid three years ago meant that there was a bigger number of special votes to be counted.

The “Wainuiomata News” contacted the Electoral Commission and asked how many special votes were being counted in Hutt South.

The Electoral Commission replied saying that they cannot provide figures until the final count is announced on 3 November.

Traditionally Labour has usually outperformed National on special votes.

The final shape of the government will not be known until the final results are in.

That will determine whether or not the National and ACT Party coalition will need New Zealand First to secure a majority in Parliament.

The final result could also see Labour gain more MPs, as there were very small margins in a number of seats.

These include Banks Peninsula, where National led by 83 votes; Mount Albert, where National led by 106 votes; Nelson, where National led by 54 votes; New Lynn, where National led by 483 votes; and Te Atatū, where National led by just 30 votes.

Based on a 120 seat Parliament a majority of 61 seats is needed to form a Government.

However the byelection in the Port Waikato seat has created an extra seat, meaning 62 seats will be needed for a coalition to form the Government.

On election night results the National Party had 50 seats, ACT New Zealand 11 seats, the Labour Party 34 seats, the Green Party 14 seats, New Zealand First 8 seats and Te P ti M ori 4 seats.

Safeguarding Wellington’s waters Measures to maintain and enhance Wellington waterbodies are among proposed changes to Greater Wellington’s Natural Resources Plan (NRP) unanimously supported by regional councillors at their 25 October council meeting.

NRP Change 1, which includes policies and rules to protect fresh and coastal waters, as well as Te Awarua-o-Porirua (Porirua Harbour) and Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington Harbour), is now open for public consultation.

The proposed changes would strengthen the role of Council and mana whenua as kaitiaki, ensuring water and land use is managed sustainably, Greater Wellington Chair Daran Ponter says.

“Wellingtonians want to swim and collect kai in their awa and moana.

“They want healthy wai, thriving ecosystems and a regional council committed to protecting te taiao.” Cr Ponter says.

“Following years of in-depth discussion with mana whenua and our communities, we’ve reached a key milestone.”

The council is “proposing significant changes that will safeguard our fresh and coastal waters by managing land-based activities that affect them.”

Te Upoko Taiao Chair and regional councillor David Lee acknowledges the vital role of the Whaitua Committee members and mana whenua have played throughout the community-led process.

“Greater Wellington wishes to acknowledge the mahi of our Whaitua Committee members and mana whenua, whose unwavering commitment and vast array of knowledge have been instrumental in setting these proposed freshwater standards.”

NRP Change 1 aims to reduce the amount of contaminants being discharged to water bodies from activities like earthworks and urban development, Greater Wellington Environment Committee chair Penny Gaylor says.

“It also recommends amendments to regional biodiversity schedules, to protect more of our precious native plants, animals and ecosystems, like the black coral colony recently identified on the K piti Coast.”

Consultation on Change 1 to the National Resources Plan is open until 15 December 2023.

However in the first match of the season Easterns Suburbs took out a comfortable win over Wainuiomata.

Batting first Suburbs scored 215 for the loss of four wickets. In reply Wainuiomata reached 108 for the loss of six wickets.

Feedback on representation sought Residents are being urged to have their say on how people and communities are represented on Hutt City Council.

Community input into council representation is critical, says Paul Swain, Chair of the Independent Panel carrying out the review of current representation arrangements.

“We want to make sure that council representation is fair and effective for Lower Hutt residents and communities, so we are reviewing the arrangements that are currently in place to see if they should continue or if they need to be changed for the future.”

The panel is looking at things such as how many councillors there should be, whether those councillors should be elected from local wards, from across the whole city, or a combination of both (as

at present), and whether there should be community boards.

In addition to a survey that was released on Monday, the panel is also meeting with a wide range of community groups and organisations over the coming months to hear first-hand how well they think they are currently represented on council.

“We will carefully consider all the feedback we receive, along with other information about the city’s communities, before making recommendations to the council next year about the representation arrangements that should be in place for the 2025 council elections.

The Wainuiomata supermarket was one of the very first in New Zealand to begin the change from Countdown to Woolworths.

The new Woodlworths signage is now in place.

However the name change is not complete yet.

When people receive a receipt for their purchase the receipt says “Countdown”.

And staff members are still wearing Coundown uniforms.

The new Woolworths signage is in place in preparation for the rebrand of the supermarket, due to take place early next year.

In July the managiong director of Countdown and Woolworths Group New Zealand, Spencer Sonn, announced that Countdown supermarkets will be rebranded as Woolworths supermarkets New Zealand from early 2024.

The name change, he said, is part of an “accelerated transformation programme” which includes a refreshed loyalty programme - with the launch of Everyday Rewards also planned for early 2024 - and a $400 million investment in renewing and upgrading the store network over the next three years.

Other parts of the programme include a more than $45 million investment in added security measures and upskilling staff.

Customers will also see more convenient eCommerce shopping options, a “deeper connection to grassroots community activities”, and further commitment to fresh produce.
