Cause for joy Johnsonville Uniting Church has been celebrating 50 years of Presbyterian and Methodist Church Union in Johnsonville, celebrating a new minister, Leanie Lemmer fresh from South Africa and the refurbishing of their building. Sunday February 16 saw the congregation worship with many visitors. Everyone then spent time reminiscing with a myriad of photographs and memorabilia around the complex. “The chatter around the displays was quite something,” says parishioner Murray Foster. ‘Many happy times together were recalled and remembering of those who have passed on, who were a big part of Johnsonville Uniting Church, brought back many memories,” he says. Continued on page 2. Sisters Jade, Talia and Nia Tulikifanga in front of a spectacular Johnsonville Floral Art Club arrangement, a gift to the Johnsonville Uniting Church at the weekend celebrations. Uniting Church celebrates three times over Continued from page 1. This was followed by what he says was a “sumptuous” shared lunch and a lot more talk. The Johnsonville Floral Art Group had decorated the building with beautiful floral creations. A celebration cake was cut by Helen Hay, the most senior parishioner and Talia Tulikifanga, the youngest with nearly 90 years difference in age. Following the decision in 1970 that two churches would merge, the current Dr Taylor Terrace location was chosen, says parishioner Judith Dunlop. “A decision was made that the mission would be as serving the ‘village’ of Johnsonville, in particular its youth and to provide a community heart,” she says. “The Terrace Centre was opened on November 19 1977,” she adds, saying

Residents demand warning signs By Glenise Dreaver
“Sorry local authorities, but you’re just going to have to do some extra work,” says Karori Residents’ Association chair Andrea Skews. She’s talking about the need for warning signs by Karori stream, where e coli levels run at five times the national standard for swimming. (On October 3, 2018, the Independent Herald reported retired engineer Bill Guest’s report detailing the same levels of contamination, almost constant over eight years of data). Andrea says that despite that report, and representations from KRA, Wellington Water has, refused to erect signs. “And children are playing and swimming there.” She reports that there seems to
be no trouble with signs warning of toxic algae, periodically erected near running water throughout the Greater Wellington region and warning of the danger to animals. “But we have a letter saying they can’t put up signs warning of the danger to humans because that could increase flood risks, cause ‘perverse consequences’, create visual clutter, and also have budgetary impacts.” She has been told these views are shared among officers after several months of discussion between Greater Wellington Regional Council, Wellington City Council (Parks and Gardens), Regional Public Health and Wellington Water. KRA are, says Andrea, also disappointed that the regular reports that Wellington Water used to provide have ceased.
PROSTATE CANCER
SUPPORT GROUP
They have been told to use the website on www.wellingtonwater. co.nz/karori-wai/ to find regular water result updates, but she is not confident about how regular this will be. KRA has now submitted a Local Government Official Information Act request for information on the stream testing and history, she says. They know there is no quick fix, with problems which include aging sewer pipes, waste water overflow when it rains, illegal sewer connections that are extremely difficult to track, tree roots, earthquake damage and lack of consumer education around home handyman work. A sewer network running alongside the stream also has pipes, in some places dating back to the 1900s.

Fifty four years of teaching
By Glenise Dreaver
Fifty four years of teaching, 45 at Wadestown School, the last eight and a half as principal. That’s the service record of Wadestown School’s retiring principal Sally Barrett. It’s really 45 years plus at the school, where Sally was also a pupil. The class photos to prove it are still there. If that seems a narrowly-focussed career, her other nine years include other urban and rural schools and teaching overseas, including a year in Virginia when husband Bill had a Fulbright scholarship. Then there was also a year’s teaching exchange in Adelaide. “I’d encourage every teacher to travel and teach overseas if the opportunity arises. You learn so much and every country’s education system has something we can learn from,” she says. Her passion for children, for encouraging them to excel at something, is underpinned by her love of the performing arts, though that has been realised through programmes for children, rather than participation. (It’s hard to believe that this energetic woman was, as a child, judged too big for dancing lessons. “I love dancing…”) One of the big changes since she started teaching is New Zealand’s individual student-focussed approach. “New Zealand teachers are so skilled at planning programmes to meet children’s individual learning needs.” Sally, who was awarded the QSM

MP taken to talk on roads policy Dear Editor Disappointed to hear that Greg O’Connor and the Coalition Government have swung right away from what they said they would do at the election, which was to abandon the roads-dominated transport-policies of the previous Government. Some of us voted for Labour or other coalition partners, expressly because we wanted a change away from a policy of pouring massive resources into encouraging more car-use and inadequate funding
for everythng. In his column (Feb 13, 2020) Greg now claims this is “best value for New Zealanders now and in the future”. I totally disagree! This is the sort of thing I would expect to read in Brett Hudson’s column. Complete let-down hearing it from Greg. What has happened to Labour’s forward-looking vision to get us out of this car-dependent mess? And why are the Greens so silent? Why are those $billions not being channelled primarily into
rail projects – such as extending Wellington’s “heavy rail” system to the un-served quarter of the region south of the present station? Has the Government simply been spooked by delivering a surplus and is desperate to spend it as quickly and easily as possible, even on the damaging policies of the last government? Please Greg, reconsider this and don’t just kow-tow to the noisy “roads lobby”. David Bond Ngaio

Chinese New Year was celebrated recently at Enliven’s Huntleigh Home in Karori. The New Year date officially fell on 25 January but celebrations traditionally go on for a couple of weeks afterwards. R e c r e a t io n s t a f f a t Huntleigh Home strung up red and gold decorations around the home and a shared lunch was held. “We do try to recognise the different cultures that are represented by our residents and our staff,” Huntleigh Home recreation team leader Annelize Steyn explains. She says there are both residents and staff at the home who have Chinese heritage. The shared lunch is held each year and staff members are encouraged to dress in red and gold to help mark the occasion. Recreation staff were pleased to find that one of the red dresses brought in to hang on the wall as decoration actually fit resident Lock Be. “She was so excited to put it on!” Annelize says. Tattoo or not to tattoo?
Should job hunters cover tattoos during a job interview? Megan Howell-Love of Newlands is a career coach at Grove Career Coaching in Wellington and she has done an informal survey of 400 local managers on this issue. She says: “An easy way of deciding is to look at the workplace you are applying to work for and check whether staff already working there display visible tattoos.” All the managers she surveyed agreed they didn’t like tattoos on people’s faces, or inappropriate tattoos including nude images,

gang insignia, racist symbols or swear words. “Given the choice between two interview candidates with equal qualifications and personalities, they admit they would choose the person without that type of visible tattoo,” says Megan. One manager commented that she has worked in a corporate environment for 20 years and until recently tattoos were expected to be covered Now, however, she interviews people who show a very real pride in their tattoos, and don’t cover them. “I think it reflects what wider society is feeling about them,” she says.
“Wellington is very unique and several people I spoke to while researching this commented that tattoos are just another aspect of a person’s appearance,” says Megan. “As long as they were ‘nice’ tattoos, they were just as acceptable as ironed professional clothing or polished shoes. “Bad tattoos were similar to messy hair, a person smelling strongly of smoke or BO. “One person even commented on the rise of tattoos in professional environments and linked it to the decline in men wearing ties in the office,” Megan adds.

Karori Lions Karnival and Fair By Brian Sheppard
The Karori Lions held their 49th Karori Karnival at Ben Burn Park on February 16. A Lions spokesperson says this is the largest community event in Karori. While it generates some funds for community projects, its real purpose is to provide an enjoyable day for local families. As I entered the park, the enthusiastic African drumming beat drew me to the stage where the audience was captivated by the infectiously energetic perfor-
mance of Kubutana and the Moringa Dancers. In another area, children queued for turns on a chair ride and the Titanic slide. There were stalls with something for everyone as small businesses, crafters and community organisations were keen to show what they can offer. Amongst these were the Karori West Scouts, the Karori Residents Association and the Karori Community Centre. With plenty of food and soft drink stalls to meet the crowd’s hunger and thirst needs, families could relax and enjoy a lovely summer’s day out.

Onslow Medical Centre SAME DAY APPOINTMENTS AVAILABLE – NEW PATIENTS WELCOME Drs Alison Craig Shane Dunphy and Tim Jefferies would like to introduce and welcome the following Associates to our team Dr Linda Mellor - I have been a GP for 25 years. I trained in the UK and came to Wellington in 1996 on a 1 year working holiday. I fell in love with Wellington (despite its weather!) and never left. I am now married to a Kiwi and have 2 gorgeous teenage boys. I enjoy all aspects of general practice and it is this variety, seeing both the young and the old that keeps my passion for general practice alive. I constantly strive to provide high quality care, treating patients as I would wish my family to be treated. Dr Greg Bond - I graduated from Newcastle university in the UK in 2009, and moved to New Zealand – originally for a working holiday - in 2011. Since then I have worked around NZ in hospital medicine and anaesthesia, before settling on General Practice in 2016. I am now working towards gaining my fellowship of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners. The most rewarding parts of General Practice for me are the diversity of people & their problems that I get meet every day, and working to help find solutions to these. I have a keen interest in both Child Health and Occupational Medicine Dr Atikah Razley - Atikah joined our team in January 2018. She graduated from National University of Ireland and worked in Ireland before migrating to New Zealand in 2013. Atikah has a Postgraduate Diploma in Palliative Care and a Postgraduate Certificate Women’s Health. She is interested in all aspects of general practice, with a particular interest in travel medicine.
Atikah is fluent in Malay.
Keeping fit is a great way for young people to avoid serious conditions such as diabetes. Dr Tim Halpine, of Active Feet Podiatry, says type 2 diabetes is increasingly common amongst teenagers, a shocking trend. “An important tool in the prevention of diabetes is regular aerobic exercise, like walking,” Tim says. “In this sense, walking is the best prescription!” Type 2 diabetes is much more prevalent among young people who are overweight and unfit. Diabetes is a condition where the blood sugar level is too high, resulting in damage to organ systems. Regular walking helps calf muscles pump blood back to the heart and improves circulation. It burns calories, helps to maintain ideal body weight, control glucose levels and prevent the onset of adult diabetes. “To participate regularly and comfortably in a walking programme,
feet need to be maintained and well supported,” Tim says. “Podiatry plays a key role in ensuring walking is comfortable and easily achievable.” Many children who complain of sore legs suffer from flat feet and may need to see a podiatrist in order to exercise happily and stay fit. “It is especially rewarding to help these children overcome their pain, become active and decrease the risk of developing diabetes. Dr Tim has been busy for the past 30 years helping people from all walks of life on the road to pain free feet. His patients range from top international athletes, business and political figures, to the elderly and young children. His rooms are conveniently located just off Lambton Quay at Floor 2 85 the Terrace Wellington, and he also sees patients at the Ngaio Medical Centre, 75 Ottawa Road. Call to make an appointment on 473 8696. ActiveFeetPodiatry.com

Coronavirus test available Environmental Science and Research has confirmed that a novel coronavirus (nCoV) diagnostic test is now available in New Zealand. The diagnostic testing service will accept respiratory samples from all suspected cases that meet the most recent Ministry of Health case definition and other cases where a precautionary approach is appropriate. The Ministry of Health is providing health advice on its novel coronavirus webpage on how to prevent acute respiratory illness and what to do if feeling unwell. If you feel unwell with a fever, cough or difficulty breathing the public are advised to call Healthline (for free) on 0800 611 116.
ESR clinical virologist Erasmus Smit says the process of creating this test requires a high-level of collaboration. Dr Smit says, “setting up such tests involves collaboration across borders, organisations, laboratories and dedicated professionals working extremely hard. To develop this test we had to source the right tools and material from overseas in a time of high demand and then validate the test locally through numerous experiments to ensure the quality of the result.” The test will be performed daily and results can be expected within 24 hours of the sample being received from a health care professional.

SPORTS TALK With Jacob Page
Halberg Awards celebrate the known and unknown alike It was a fascinating Halberg Awards last week. Israel Adesanya’s speech taking aim at New Zealand’s tall poppy syndrome was a ballsy play considering many mainstream sport fans would have not known anything about the UFC champion until he received his sportsman
of the year award. Ignorance of UFC does not mean Adesanya is not deserving of the award because he is. To be a world champion in mixed martial arts is a truly global feat. Far more people compete in MMA than cricket, rugby, netball,
V8 SuperCars etc. Take nothing away from Kiwi driving ace Scott McLaughlin who dominated the V8s last year but it’s an achievement done in an Australasian fish bowl. The world champion Silver Ferns, won the team and supreme award after their form-reversing
final win last year. It goes to show the fine line between success and failure. Their one goal win was enough to see them and wonder-coach Noeline Taurua lauded with accolades. Meanwhile, spare a thought for the Black Caps who drew their
World Cup final with England in every conceivable way yet only have a runners-up medal and the memories of what might have been that still bothers me to this day. A run here or there and the Halberg Awards would have been their night. That is sport in a nutshell.
Makara Peak enduro a sell out Makara Peak’s sixth annual enduro mountain bike event on Saturday sold out comfortably in advance. The sun shone, the wind abated, and the brand new car park was open. The event is engineered to encourage newer riders into the sport as well as challenging the experienced. With the advanced race named ‘The Crusher’, the moniker piqued the interest of MP Judith “Crusher” Collins. She posted a video to the Facebook page: “I won’t be there … but I’ll be watching you.” Over a quarter of all entrants were, however, in the easier category and healthy numbers
in both under 13s and over 50s demonstrated the event’s appeal. There were also over 200 competitors riding five of the park’s toughest tracks within a three-hour-fifteen time limit. Lower Hutt-based Jesse Cseh just pipped international racer Eden Cruise to take the men’s title by two seconds. In the women’s division winner Karori’s Khulan Tumen showed off her ever-increasing speed, up from second place in 2019. Promising junior Erice van Leuvenhad a long walk back after a puncture at the furthest part of the park. The classic late 90’s trail Vertigo also
claimed a few scalps with its awkward corners and steep chutes. All riders who didn’t suffer an injury or mechanical issue made the time cut-off, and in the finish area outside Mud Cycles smiles were as large as the tales being spun of close calls and impromptu falls. All proceeds, expected to be at least $4000, are reinvested in the park. This was made possible by an army of volunteers, and sponsorship and assistance from Mud Cycles, Hell Pizza, Spoke Magazine, Ground Effect Clothing, One Fat Bird, Parrotdog brewery, WCC and Makara Peak Supporters.

And there was LIGHT!
Skylight Specialists have been specialising in skylights for 25+ years. We have yet to come across a brand/make/type or configuration of skylight that we do not know everything about. Skylight Specialists is LBP (Government approved licensed building and roofing practitioners) , with 30+ years in the building industry and employ a highly skilled team which consists of trade qualified glaziers, roofers and builders. When we come and assess your skylight/s we will provide you with a free, no
obligation quotation. We will also provide you with a detailed report including photos that will include our findings and recommendations whether it be for general maintenance, repairs or replacement. At this time of year everyone is concerned about insulation of their homes, trying to keep warm and retain heat. Unfortunately, skylights are often overlooked, even when they can be sometimes the main factor of heat loss. Older skylights are sometimes full-time venting without the homeowner even being aware of this, which is no
different from leaving a window open 24/7. Others are only single glazed or just plastic. By upgrading to double glazing you can retain up to 70% more of your heat. A lot of skylights we come across is simply a piece of glass glued to the roof structure of your home – This is by far inadequate for many reasons including thermal properties and condensation issues, as the moisture has no where to go but get absorbed by the structure of your home. We will assess the entire skylight including the flashings (roof flashings

are what connects the skylight to your roof and keeps all watertight). This will cover if you have adequate condensation channels, drainage, seals, condition of flashings, thermal properties and of course longevity of the skylight/s and the surrounding areas. So if you’d like to add a lot more light into your home and want the job done well, contact them on 04 938 0721 or 027 595 4448. “We are tradespeople not sales people”
