Covid-19 may have slowed it down but the Onslow Historical Association published their annual Onslow Historian publication which celebrates 100 years of Khandallah Park.

The Onslow Historian was a compilation of stories, memories and the history of Khandallah Park which turned 100 as a Wellington City Council park a couple of years ago.

Because of Covid restrictions they were not able to have the launch of the Historian they wanted.

The group does plan to have a long walk around Khandallah Park on Waitangi Weekend.

Passion and pride motivates book on park Continued from page 1.

Judy Siers, a member of the Onslow Historical Society for more than 50 years and current President, helped compile the booklet with a number of passionate volunteer contributors sharing their insights into the history of Khandallah Park.

“It’s a collection of pieces on Khandallah Park that I hope

I’ve put together in a really charming way.

“I’ve interpreted facts, illustrations, maps and some really lovely photographs from a fantastic photographer who had photos of the park from the 1940s.

“It’s been a real labour of love but we are all proud of it.

“I’ve been president of the

Onslow Historical Society onand-off over the years and I’ve been with them since 1968 and my team started this annual journal the Onslow Historian all the way back in 1971.

“I’ve called on other people to write stories for us and there are stories that were published in the 1950s and 1960s as well as contemporary stories as well.

“Everyone who has worked on this is thrilled with how it turned out.”

Judy, who is a publisher by profession , says there was a lot of love in the project which has been in the works for more than two years.

“I love the area and the people are saying this is a treasure of a book.”

Hey Everyone! Welcome to 2022! Hope you all had a wonderful break, we are back here for another year of property info and banter!

From the whole of Team YIP and Collective Real Estate, we are amped to do even more this year to look after the well-being of our community.

This week I want to have a chat about all the changes in the property market. Here are the 4 main variables to keep an eye out on in 2022! s Buyer Budgets – Getting a mortgage now requires a higher deposit and your income/spending is heavily scrutinised. Interest rates have also gone up, so this can only mean that there are less buyers with smaller budgets.

However, there will always be buyers that need to buy houses and those buyers who are looking now are in a good financial position to buy. Because of this, we are seeing a much higher % of buyers making offers on properties and significantly less ‘not-serious buyers.’ s More Houses for Sale – With low interest mortgages coming up for renewal soon, we are seeing homeowners opting to sell, move to better areas and work from home. For example; a homeowner who had a mortgage fixed at 2%, will now be looking at a renewal to around 4%... this is a very scary concept and will motivate some to sell before their affordability / lifestyle is affected. Some may simply want to escape the weather, but! we are off to an amazing start to Summer, let’s hope that reminds us why we love Wellington… every few years or so. s Government / Reserve Bank intervention – Although the banks increased their interest rates at a higher rate proportionate to the official cash rate changes - the government and the reserve bank can have some influence in the market. Should they wish to soften this

cooling market / correction, they may look to announce some changes to minimise the upcoming disruption to the market. s Increase of New Houses – With interest rate discounts, rebates, and incentives to landlords, demand for new builds in 2021 skyrocketed to great heights. Most investors sold their old properties and purchased new builds (we’ll cover why in more detail another time). Cost & supply of materials and labour shortages continue to hinder the new build market, so it will be interesting to see how supply will balance demand, especially with all the intensification plans.

One other thing that may make a difference is the gradual increase of people returning to NZ / getting residency. It is still gradual at this stage, and it doesn’t seem we are getting any closer to normality with this pandemic.

Regardless, when it comes to property, it is most important to time your lives and not the market. If you need to sell, focus on getting the best possible result by focusing on the best possible process. If you don’t need to sell… don’t sell. If you buy and sell in the same market, it doesn’t really make a difference what market it is.

Glenside rail links receive track renewal A large chunk of track renewal between Glenside and Ngauranga was completed by KiwiRail over the Christmas holiday period.

Acting Chief Executive at KiwiRail, David Gordon says between 26 December and 10 January, while commuter train services were suspended on the Wellington rail network, more than 250 KiwiRail staff and contractors carried out extensive work on the .Ɨpiti Line, both in the tunnels and at Plimmerton Station.

During this period, they completed 60 percent of the track renewal in Tunnel 2, which is the tunnel that runs between Glenside and Ngauranga Gorge.

This represents 2.4kms of the 4.35km in the tunnel on the ‘up main’ – the track that runs from Wellington to Waikanae.

During the two weeks, they also replaced all old sleepers in Tunnels 3 to 6 – the remaining tunnels on the line and also a large section of rail south of Paekakariki.

The tunnel work is good news for commuters, enabling the lifting of speed restrictions, meaning fewer delays for passenger trains.

Significant progress was made in Plimmerton, where KiwiRail, Downer and John Holland worked to upgrade the Steyne Avenue level crossing, the overhead traction equipment, the turnouts and the station underpass, and re-surface the station platform.

These improvements are part of a wider programme of works for Plimmerton Station, designed to improve capacity and resilience on the KƗSiti Line.

inbrief news Khandallah Plunket targeted Khandallah Plunket continues to be targeted by someone who is defacing the Maori part of their name ‘Whanau Awhina’.

The facility behind the Khandallah Library has had their sign defaced at least five times in the past year.

Dog owners are being urged to be mindful of the poisonous karaka berries when they’re out and about.

The bright orange berries are highly toxic to dogs and can often be fatal.

Frank Kitts Park the latest playground to take shape New design for Frank Kitts playground revealed with construction work due to start on the waterfront site early in 2022.

The $6 million new design and upgrade will be a destination playground – a large scale play area with bespoke equipment, a nautical/coastal theme fitting for the waterfront site, and an accessible space for kids of all ages and abilities.

Councillor Jill Day, Chair of the Social, Cultural and Economic committee says the new playground will be worth the wait.

“This playground has been a long time coming, so we’re excited to see preparation work about to start on what will eventually become a wonderful experience and memory for thousands of Wellingtonians – and visitors to Pǀneke.

“Some people were disappoint-

ed by the removal of the slide, and the decommissioning of the lighthouse, but the new one will be just as large, fun and entertaining – just safer and more suitable for tamariki of all ages.”

The refresh on the city’s playground matches the Council’s vision for Wellington 2040, to make Wellington an inclusive, sustainable and creative capital for people to live, work and play, says Play Spaces Specialist, Matthew Beres.

“With the redesign, we’ve integrated active, imaginative and cognitive play opportunities across terraced play spaces stepping up from the harbour edge. The terraced spaces will provide a variety of play experiences, some of which are specifically designed for different age groups.

“The northern edge is framed

by the waka play deck, and at the eastern end an abstracted tug bow separates the playground from the waterfront promenade.

“We have worked the design around many of the existing 3ǀhutakawa trees so they can remain, while others were transplanted to different spots in the park back in November 2021 to make space. One of these trees will be transplanted back into the playground to provide shade.”

Some of the other features include: · 5 swings, including a basket swing; mirage swing; toddler swing and two standard swings · A new lighthouse, positioned to the western side of the playground · A dual flying fox Works are due to start Monday 10 January 2022, with the new playground expected to be open

in October.

The decommissioned lighthouse will not be going to waste as it will be salvaged, diverting most materials from the landfill.

The domed roof will be refurbished and reused on the new lighthouse along with the seagull. The chrome seashells and telescopes will be salvaged, refurbished and reused in the new playground.

The lighthouse body has been purchased by an interested party and the removal, relocation, and associated costs will be paid for by the new owner – and a donation of $2,500 will be made to a charity of their choice.

There are 107 playgrounds across Wellington City, ranging in size and play equipment – lots of different options and always one near you.

The upgrade to Frank Kitts

Park playground follows other recent projects in the region. The play areas at Pembroke Road, Pukehuia Park, Karori Park, Wall Park, Khandallah Library, Cummings Park, Kekerenga Street and Matairangi nature trail extension have all received a fresh face within the last two years.

The renewals at Elizabeth Street in Mount Victoria, Nuku Street in Strathmore and Shorland Park stage one in Island Bay will also be open in time for Christmas.

The play areas at Pirie Street in Mount Victoria, Waipapa in Hataitai, Breaker Bay, Harrison Street in Brooklyn, Chelsea Street in Miramar, Wadestown, Newtown Park, Helston Road and ƿwhiro Bay are also due for renewal, with feedback being collated following a consultation process.

Good news! I haven’t seen any wasps (German and common wasps) hanging around my beehives or in the garden this season.

Unlike bees, wasps eat other insects fpr protein as well as nectar. Wellington’s mild winters and the lack of natural predators mean they thrive unless controlled. New Zealand has some of the highest densities of German and common wasps in the world.

That’s bad news for those of us who like to picnic and equally bad news for our native insects and our honey industry. Wasps rob hives taking the honey and the larvae and they will kill any bees that stand in their way.

The German wasp

Bees employ a smothering technique to kill intruders so it takes around five bees to kill one wasp. On the other side it only takes one wasp to kill hundreds of bees.

If you happen upon a nest (in the ground) then ring the exterminators or report it to your local council if it is on public land. Don’t attempt to get rid of it yourself.

Rosco raises Black Caps to new heights Cricket in New Zealand has grown up with Ross Taylor.

That’s the best way I can sum-up Taylor’s foot-print on the game in this country.

When he arrived on the international scene as a dashing, hard-hitting batsman in 2006, his talent was raw, unrefined yet undeniable.

As he exited his final test last week, he did so knowing he had left the Black Caps in far better shape than when he first donned the silver fern.

New Zealand on the global stage have earned a level of legitimacy they have not had before.

Not even during the Hadlee-filled 1980s New Zealand teams was cricket in this country as respected as it is today and Taylor has had a lot to do with it.

That respect happens when you make back-to-back 50-over World Cup finals, tie one (yes we did), win the first World Test Championship final and even though he wasn’t part of it, make the final of the Twenty20 World Cup.

With Taylor’s help, New Zealand is no longer seen as a bunch of battlers who will give teams a good go on home soil but generally fail away from home.

Now, we have a phenomenal home record and have had some big overseas triumphs against the likes of Pakistan and England.

Taylor has been a huge part of that.

Even during the captaincy drama with Brendon McCullum and coach Mike Hesson in 2012, Taylor handled himself with class, never

put his own needs ahead of the team and simply rolled-up his sleeves and got on with it.

A more selfish man would have walked away after losing the leadership and splintered the team for years to come.

That simply is not Taylor’s style.

You can talk about the runs, the centuries, the catches at first slip, the square drives, slog-sweeps and questionable running between the wickets but the image at the end of the World Test Championship final with Kane Williamson is

the defining image of New Zealand cricket.

Taylor and Williamson are the two best batsmen the country has produced.

They have made each other better, pushed themselves and the Black Caps to unparalleled heights.

The team has grown as Taylor has grown and we as supporters have had many golden summers as a result.

As a fan, all I can say is thanks for the memories and enjoy retirement.

Severin stunner books Johnsonville final berth

A Gareth Severin century has assured Johnsonville a spot in the Ewen Chatfield 50-over final on Monday with one round to go.

Severin hit a run-a-ball 109 to help Johnsonville beat Onslow by 130 runs at Nairnville Park on Saturday.

A win on Saturday against Karori will see Johnsonville host the final at Alex Moore Park on Wellington Anniversary Monday.

Johnsonville’s batsmen had their best day of the season led by their

two emerging talents Severin and Devan Vishvaka.

Vishvaka hit an impressive 65 as Johnsonville had the platform to launch late in the innings.

Johnsonville posted 284 for five from their 50 overs.

Joshua Dean was expensive for Onslow but took two wickets while Matthew Scobble took 1-23 from seven overs.

The Onslow batsmen were not able to build a partnership capable of challenging Johnsonville’s total.

Opening bowler Zac Ringrose took the top-three Onslow batsman

and the spin duo of Josh Benton and Raki Weerasundara bowled superbly in tandem.

Benton went wicketless but bowled his nine overs and conceded just 18 runs.

Weerasundara was the fortunate recipient of the wickets, taking 4-22 from his 5.5 overs.

Onslow was restricted to 154 all out in 41.5 overs.

Weerasundara says the batsmen showed the blueprint needed to win the final on Monday.

“It was a great innings from Gareth who has been in great form

and has been threatening to do this all season.

“We showed what we want to be able to do with the bat,” he says.

“Bat well and keep wickets in hand and launch late in the game.”

Weerasundara says the pitch assisted the spin bowlers and he praised Benton’s strong season despite the lack of wickets and admitted he was a little sheepish about taking four himself.

ANZ search for Wellington region’s next female cricketing talent As New Zealand prepares to host the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022, official sponsor ANZ is seeking the next generation of female cricketing talent from the Wellington region to join the ANZ Next XI. Eleven young women aged 12-18, will be selected from across New Zealand to join the ANZ Next XI. They’ll be invited to an exclusive White Ferns junior training academy, where they will meet the players, train with the team, attend expert-led master classes, and learn valuable skills to inspire them to become the very best cricketers they can be.

As long-time supporters of women in sport, ANZ wants to make sure that nothing can stop the next generation of sportswomen from pursuing a future in cricket, and has

created this once in a lifetime opportunity to help encourage them to get there.

White Ferns all-rounder Suzie Bates said she can’t wait to meet the ANZ Next XI. “An opportunity like this would have been a dream for me as a kid, so I know it’s going to mean so much to these young cricketers. It’s amazing to see ANZ support the next generation of female cricketers in the same way they back the White Ferns.”

ANZ is on the lookout for cricket fanatics of all abilities, ranging from passionate beginners to the talented few who eat wickets for breakfast and always try to smash it out of the park. These young women will be dedicated to spending time on the cricket pitch, and be determined to improve their skills. Applicants will

be judged on the passion and determination they can demonstrate in their application.

ANZ New Zealand CEO Antonia Watson said it is important we continue to create opportunities for young women to succeed.

“I’m a firm believer that if you can see it you can be it. The opportunity to spend time with some of our most inspirational female athletes is something these young women will never forget.”

She said ANZ has been a strong supporter of women in sport for over 10 years from grassroots to elite level athletes.
