Cyrus Dahl has his swing and it’s only the beginning.

In February, the 13-year-old Newlands College pupil, who has cerebral palsy, appeared on TVNZ’s Breakfast to ask if the show could share his mission to enable disabled children to swing and play in his area by fundraising enough money for two accessible swings.

The appearance helped Cyrus raise more than $43,000 with six accessible swings now planned for Wellington playgrounds including the first at Cyrus’ local playground in Woodridge.

Cyrus’ first swing was opened on Sunday with city councillors, politicians and the local community celebrating Cyrus’ success.

Cyrus’ Mum, Kris, says the experience had shown her son that he can achieve his goals with a little determination and hard work.

“We’re not patient people, so we both had to keep pushing it,” she says.

“Local councillor Jill Day said to us that getting this done usually takes years to achieve in our parks and it only took us three months which must be some sort of record.”

Having partnered up with the Wellington City Council, the new swings are planned to be introduced in five different parks around the region, with two sets to roll out as part of the Newlands Park upgrade, which had not previously included room for specialist equipment.

Other swings have been added to plans for new builds at Shorland Park, Island Bay and Cummings Park, Ngaio.

He recently won the Youth Philanthropist category at the Wellingtonian of the Year Awards, for his campaign.

“This is about visibility because everyone knows some-

one in their family with a disability or mobility issue.

“It’s about celebrating diversity and allowing everyone to play.

Cyrus was filmed by Attitude TV throughout the day on Sunday with his documentary set to be released in the next couple of months.

Cyrus says his next project will be to try to improve accessible housing for those who need it.

“We’re lucky that our house is acceptable but state housing has to be way more accessible than it is right now,” Kris says.

getting them into parks and we want to advocate for an accessible bathroom in Wellington city where people can shower and change when needed even if they have a disability.”

Daughters inspire dad to keep pool open

Ava McGrath, 10, and her sisters go to Khandallah pool almost every day during the summer.

Ava loves to jump in cool water to escape the summer sun, and the diving boards are her favourite.

She and her friends will often meet there to hang out during the holidays, or head there after school for a quick dip.

Early March this year, Ava asked her father John why the pool wasn’t open.

It is sunny and warm, the perfect time to go swimming.

John thought that was a good question.

Now, John has started a petition to keep Khandallah Pool open until the end of the Easter holidays.

The Khandallah Pool is open from December 5 to February 28 each year.

“It’s a great facility,” John says.

“It’s a shame to see it idle and shut right through the whole of March when you usually get the best weather in Wellington.”

John first posted the question of keeping the pool open later on the Facebook group Khandallah Community Noticeboard.

He was surprised by the immediate response.

Hundreds of people responded to the question, making it one of the noticeboard’s most touched upon posts.

“There was immediately 200 expressions of support.

“I thought maybe I’ve touched upon something important here.”

John’s idea is to move a few days from the start of the pool’s open season in December to March.

“You’d postpone it until the holidays start.

“This isn’t about huge cost, it’s about keeping the pool open when the weather is best.”

Wharangi/Onslow-Western Ward councillor Diane Calvert supports the petition.

“I have been a strong advocate for Khandallah Pool and Park since joining council in 2016.”

Several years ago Diane helped establish the group “Revitalise Khandallah Park and Pool.”

Locals were concerned about the lack of care towards Khandallah Pool, and felt the pool was being left to decay beyond repair.

Trees were shading the area from the sun, a stream nearby was overflowing into the pool, and there was no hot water showers or heating.

The group helped put a tree maintenance scheme in place, improved play equipment at the nearby playground, and set up an annual family community picnic to coincide with the pool’s 100 year anniversary.

In March Diane was able to get a resolution included in the council’s draft long term plan that allocated $1.1 million dollars to Khandallah

Mayor Andy Foster hosted the Hui which was attended by over 60 people, as well as Councillors Teri O’Neil, Rebecca Matthews and Fleur Fitzsimmons, Chief Operations Officer Claire Richardson and members of the Queer at Council group.

This would go towards the pool’s resilience, operating equipment and facilities.

Officers would report back on options for improving the pool, which could include the extension of its operating period.

Council has commissioned a report to address this part of the resolution, says Calvert.

“The petition results will be useful to hopefully support any recommendations in the report.”

So far the petition has 375 signatures, which John thinks is absolutely great.

He hopes to get at least 100 more signatures before the petition closes on May 26.

After it closes, John will make

a submission to Wellington City Council, and says that anyone who wants to come along is welcome.

He wants the petition to show the council what a great facility the pool is so they will keep it open later.

“This isn’t just about Khandallah.

Lots of people in Johnsonville, Ngaio, and even Crofton Downs use it.

“It’s a great facility for everyone across the Northern suburbs.”

As for Ava, she wants to swim in her favourite pool with her friends during the last days of summer in Wellington.

“The water is really refreshing and cold,” Ava says.

“If it was open later, I would get to play in it more.”

ANZ Bank set to depart Johnsonville

Another bank is set to leave Johnsonville next month.

The ANZ branch in Johnsonville Mall will close on June 3. An ANZ spokesperson says it is a sign of the times.

“After consultation with our staff, the difficult decision was made to close the Johnsonville branch. It will be closed effective

3 June.

“Like most branch closures, this followed a decline in in-branch transactions which is a trend we’re seeing nationally and across the globe.”

The branch had been open three days a week. Many people remain concerned about the exit of core facilities from Johnsonville and the impact it has on the older population, many of whom are not

tech-savvy and rely on face-to-face interactions for banking.

The ANZ spokesperson says banking digitally is the trend.

“This is because more Kiwis are banking digitally or by calling our Contact Centre, rather than coming into the branch.

“Fewer than one percent of banking transactions are now made in person.

“For every 1000 transactions,

960 are now digital, 27 are at an ATM, five are made in-branch and seven are via our contact centre.

We expect this trend to continue.

“It will mean that some customers that use the branch regularly may have to look at other banking options we offer, such as digital banking via our website or GoMoney app, telephone banking or by visiting the nearest branch in Porirua.”

Johnsonville Library will come alive with the sound of Tiffany Baker playing her harp on Saturday at 2pm.

This will be her second show in Johnsonville as part of New Zealand Music Month.

Tiffany comes from a large musical family and has played lever harp since 1999.

Since 2007, she has also played the triple harp. She now teaches both the lever harp and the triple harp to students of all ages.

Her mentor is Robin Ward, who is an international Triple Harpist.

He also built Tiffany’s triple harp.

“I have come to realise that people think there is only one type of harp - a big pedal harp in an orchestra, whereas there are actually many different sizes and sorts of harps.”

“I’m trying to bring awareness to the fact that the harp is more accessible than people realise.

“I started on a 22 string harp, then fundraised for a 29-string harp and now I’m on a 36-string harp.”

Tiffany has her own business Harpeggio Studio where people can learn the harp and experience the instrument for themselves.

“I want to give people the opportunity to play the harp, so I now have a hire harp available.”

play string instruments but she spent 12 months asking her mother to try the harp more than 20 years ago and the rest, as they say, is history.

“Many of my siblings play violins, viola and cello.”

Tiffany says she feels fortunate to be able to perform in front of people again after Covid restrictions forced her to even take her teaching online.

“After lockdown, a student moved to the South Island, but we have continued harp lessons online,” she says.

Tiffany hopes the Johnsonville Library concerts will spark interest in the instrument, and so more people will give the harp a go.

Guides take on Birdwood Reserve Pippins, brownies and guides enjoyed a productive afternoon on Sunday at the edge of Birdwood Reserve, Karori.

Weeds were dug out, and native plants were dug in. Organiser Shireen Maindonald, Chair of Karori Kaitiaki, made a good call not to cancel, as the promised rain held off until the job was done.

Nicola Jenkin, pippins leader from GirlGuiding Karori, was enthusiastic about the opportunity this provided for the girls.

“Four of our ten pippins (ages 5 to 6 years) are here, very excited to be looking for different kinds of bugs while helping with weeding and planting.

“The girls are all learning about protecting the environment and giving back to the community, which is what we do.”

Karori Kaitiaki (Kaka) is a community group which aims

to environmentally protect and beautify Karori.

A key driver behind its formation was Wellington Mayor Andy Foster, who was to be seen vigorously tackling invasive vines up a steep bank.

Andy was also instrumental in forming Friends of Birdwood Reserve, which links Zealandia to Appleton Park, and is part of a corridor for native birds to connect with Otari-Wilton’s Bush and beyond.

Karori Lions turned up with refreshments for the group of around 40 people.

Signage included “stop waste” (reduce-reuse-recycle) and there were bins marked for recycle, food waste for composting, and general rubbish.

Karori Lions Club director of Youth and Community, Beth Anders says she was thrilled with how the day turned out.

Siva Sivanantham, Kaka committee member, seemed to be busy everywhere all afternoon at the Birdwood Reserve over the weekend.

“We were delighted to be asked to help out today. It is such a pleasure to see the young girls learning to enjoy and care about the environment.

“We wanted to reward them as well as reinforce the message of waste minimisation. Well done Kaka for organising a very successful event.”

Plastic dog tags set to vanish Plastic dog tags are set to become a thing of the past in Wellington City and Lower Hutt, following the introduction of the One Tag for this year’s dog registrations.

The One Tag is a metal tag designed to last a dog’s lifetime. Dog owners will still need to pay their annual registration fees, but they can keep using the same tag as long as they live in their Council’s jurisdiction.

Wellington City Mayor Andy Foster says the One Tag initiative is being introduced by Wellington City Council, Hutt City Council and Selwyn District Council, with the aim of reducing the amount of plastic waste going to the region’s landfills.

“In the last five years alone we’ve issued around 60,000 plastic dog tags in Wellington City, and given there are currently around

14,000 dogs registered in the Capital and that number is continually increasing, the switch to the One Tag will make a big difference over time.”

Chair of the Hutt City Council Infrastructure and Regulatory Committee Deborah Hislop adds that Hutt City Council is seeing an increasing number of complaints from customers about them sending them a piece of plastic each year which can’t be recycled.

“Environmental sustainability is really important to our community, so our systems and processes need to reflect that. We’re increasingly moving towards online transactions, so once the One Tags have been sent out this year, we’ll be creating less paper waste too.”

The One Tag is lightweight yet durable and comes in two sizes – 25mm for small dogs

and 35mm for larger dogs. Wellington City Council tags are yellow, while Hutt City Council tags are blue. The back of the tag is blank so owners can get it engraved with their dog’s name or their contact details if they wish.

Under the Dog Control Act 1996, all dogs are legally required to be registered by the age of three months. Registration is due by 1 July of each year (31 July in Lower Hutt), and owners of unregistered dogs may be charged an infringement fee of $300.

Animal Control Officers can access registration records remotely when they are out on patrol to check whether a dog is currently registered. All dogs registered after 1 July 2006, except working dogs, need to be microchipped too.

Kids impress in Movin’March competitions Over 20 schools from across the region claimed prizes for Movin’March 2021, an annual Greater Wellington initiative that encourages kids and their whƗnau to walk or wheel to school and reduce carbon emissions.

Movin’March hosts four competitions to reward students for contributing to Greater Wellington’s targets to reduce transport-generated carbon emissions by 30 percent and achieve a 40 percent increase in ‘mode share’ to active and public transport by 2030.

Greater Wellington travel choice coordinator Kirsty Barr says, “This year we got a stunning 132 schools on board with a combined total of over 37,000 students across the Wellington region potentially taking part in Movin’March.

“We counted a total of 162,594 walking or wheeling trips at many of our Movin’March schools which equates to approximately 81,300 kilometres of active travel. To put those numbers into perspective, that’s the equivalent of children walking from Cape Reinga to Bluff nearly 40 times - that’s an amazing result.”

In the WOW passport challenge, schools from all districts in the Wellington region won $400 MYRIDE vouchers for their students.

The winning schools are Wainuiomata Primary, Normandale, Our Lady of KƗpiti, Paraparaumu Beach School, Papakowhai, Fraser Crescent, Birchville, St Mary’s Carterton, Fernridge, Berhampore and Ridgway Schools.

“It’s worth a special mention that for the first time Natone Park School recorded the highest number of walking or wheeling trips not only

for Porirua city, but for the entire region.”

“This school noted a total of 1815 walking and wheeling trips over March which equates to about 19 trips per student,” says Kirsty.

In addition to the WOW passport challenge, a total of 44 lucky winners for the art challenge, Movin’Minds competition and wKƗnau photo competition came away with prizes that included scooters and helmets, a tour of Weta Workshop, and other adventure experiences.

“It was awesome to see that this year we continued to get very positive feedback from schools about the programme’s kinder-on-theplanet merchandise and te Reo resources,” says Kirsty.

“Students and the community absolutely embraced these important additions to the programme and in many cases students lead the way with this new direction.”

Greater Wellington Chair, Daran Ponter says, “For twelve years Greater Wellington has celebrated children and whƗnau who choose active ways to get to school, and this year it’s plain to see from the high recorded numbers our communities are keen to celebrate the cause too.

“The great thing about Movin’March is we all benefit from the ongoing benefits of kids choosing an active form of travel over a car - it’s good for young people’s physical and mental health, it increases their independence and it’s the sustainable option!

Onslow Garden Club gets to work They came, they planted, they mulched. On Saturday the Onslow Garden Club completed their clean up of the Flying Fox area at Khandallah Park. An additional 90 native plants were planted amongst those already on the banks and then wheelbarrows and buckets were to the fore as the entire area was mulched. Formed last year the Club has a strong and active mem-

bership and as a local organisation was keen to contribute to the Onslow landscape by undertaking this project.

The number of Park users who stopped to watch, chat and say thanks showed how welcome the rejuvenating of this area was.

Khandallah playgroup celebrate all things German Every year for more than 20 years the Khandallah-based German Playgroup Wellington has held a German Fair fundraiser in May (except in 2020 when it had to be canceled because of COVID lockdown).

It is a morning of German sausages, sauerkraut, Brezeln, baking, coffee, and other goodies such as children’s toys, clothes, books, and more! Many wear their Dirndl or Lederhosen.

All proceeds go to the German Playgroup, which is put towards rent and other operational aspects of the playgroup, as well as toys, art, craft and music supplies, German books, and cultural festivals that are celebrated in Germany. We try to keep the playgroup free for all members so that affordability is not a barrier for families that would like to take part.

The German Playgroup Wellington was founded in the early 1990s.

It is a parent cooperative that assists babies and preschoolers to learn the German language. This helps young children to learn to communicate, sing German songs, learn nursery rhymes, German games and take part in celebrating cultural activities that they would otherwise not be exposed to. The group further supports caregivers to continue the German at home by providing a German library with children’s books.

Refinance to save $$? YIP! Hey Everyone! With banks starting to show signs of sub 2% mortgage rates, it will only be a matter of time before market competitive behaviours lead to more banks coming up with similar products. As much as affordability improves, the fact that there are LVR rules, means that the people who don’t houses and don’t have family who can help with deposit are stuck. However, if you are one of the lucky few who can buy, lower rates are great news! Plus, historically, most of the time when interest rates drop, prices go up – so this will fuel further market confidence.

This week, I want to share with you how you could save some $$ by looking at refinancing your current mortgages. A client of ours purchased a property a year ago, with a low deposit (10%), since then the value of their property has gone up and they have save some extra $$, they are able to access much better interest rates because they have now got over 20% in equity / deposit in their house.

Yes, although there are bank break fees, the lower rates and incentives have meant that our clients will still sav around $8,360 in the 12 months ahead, reduce their repayments by $351/month AND received $4,300 in cash back from the bank, simply by refinancing their loan. Plus! They were able to get another $20,000 extra to spend on getting a beautiful new kitchen as well. Needless to say, our clients were STOKED! So how can you do this?

First, you need to work out if your situation has improved since you purchased the property. The first step is to work out your ‘equity’, which is the % of the property you own vs the approximate market value (today), this is something we can help you with. Enliven residents, volunteers and staff lined up recently at Cashmere Home and Cashmere Heights Home in Johnsonville to receive their first Covid-19 vaccination.

Enliven is collaborating with the Capital & Coast District Health Board on a vaccination rollout to its homes in Wellington, which began in early May. Aged care residents, staff and volunteers are being prioritised in the national vaccination rollout.

Cash mere Home a nd Cashmere Heights Home manager Karen Rhind says they administered 137 vaccinations at the Johnsonville homes earlier this month. The second doses will be given at the end of the month.

“It’s reassuring that vulnerable residents and staff have the opportunity of protection from the impact of Covid-19,” she says.

“The vaccination process went very smoothly and we are grateful for the support of the Capital & Coast District Health Board and also Unichem High St Pharmacy who administered the vaccines.”

“It’s important for my health and the health of everyone else that we don’t spread this virus,” he says.

Those who received the vaccination also got a chocolate bar to enjoy while they

waited.

As for the injection itself, Michael says it was over within seconds: “It was easy – it doesn’t hurt!”

Khandallah Rebus get the insight on the BSA

Ngaio Union church member Kate Spencer says the water cooler initiative is a novel away to get people interacting.

Making connections at the water cooler Two years ago, Ngaio Union Church began ‘The Water Cooler’ as a way of connecting people who work from home.

“But now I hear from the people I chat with, that the world has changed since Covid” says Sue Brown, Ngaio Union’s Minister.

‘It used to be easy to say this person ‘goes out to work’ and this person stays at home.

“But now all the rules have changed – we’re all spending more time at home and the boundaries between ‘work’ and ‘home’ have broken down.

Sometimes we all just need to get out, grab a coffee and share

a chat with another living soul,” she adds.

So now, Ngaio Union is throwing the Water Cooler’s doors open to everyone – whatever your reason for just getting out of the house, you’ll be very welcome. “Whether you need someone to bounce ideas off, find support from or just pass the time of day with,” says Sue. “Or perhaps you just fancy a quiet cuppa and cookie. If so, the Water Cooler’s for you.”

Sue and her team at Ngaio Union will be opening up the Water Cooler each Thursday from 10.30 to 12 noon,

“It’s somewhere to gather, to exchange ideas and to make connections. We’re hoping people will build community and friendships – we can’t wait to see what happens!” adds Ngaio Union member Kate Spencer – a performance poet and producer who lives in Ngaio.

“Just drop by as works for you.

The jug’s constantly on the go, so people can fill themselves to the brim with coffee or tea – plus biccies (and maybe sausage rolls sometimes!) – before heading home for lunch, ready to power through the afternoon.”

The Rebus Club of Khandallah is a club for seniors and meets monthly in the Khandallah Bowling Club in Woodmancote Road.

The guest speakers at our April meeting were Helen Cruse and Grace Tong from the Broadcasting Standards Authority, who gave a most interesting and informative talk. We heard about how to lodge complaints with the BSA and the process they go through before a decision is reached as to whether the complaint will be upheld. There were many complaints last year due to Covid-19 as more people were watching and listening to media. The small team who deal with complaints work very closely with broadcasters. There are four codes of broadcasting practice the Free to Air TV Code; Radio Code; Pay TV Code and Election Programme Code. The BSA tries to reflect NZ society which is evolving and where standards are constantly reviewed, with research contributing to the code development. GARDENING THIS WEEK Best medicine for your wellbeing: By Wally Richards I have a copy of an old book called Vitalogy; or, Encyclopedia of Health and Home.

Written by E H. 1822-1875 Ruddock (author) and reproduced by the publisher Franklin Classics (October 14, 2018) in a paperback and hardcover.

This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important and is part of the knowledge base of civilisation as we know it.

First published in 1899, Vitalogy is a home health reference, and its advice, both strangely prescient and very dated, is once more at the cutting edge.

As a child I spent hours looking through this book, reading the articles and the cures for all the ailments under the sun.

A theme flowed through the book for good health which included being outside getting sun light (VitD), moderate exercise and a healthy diet of fruit and vegetables.

Note ‘moderate exercise’ as they advise were wise enough not to over exerting yourself unnecessarily.

This week I received an email which I would like to share with you to prove that what you are doing outside in the garden is extremely beneficial to your health and wellbeing.

‘Whether you took up gardening during the pandemic or have been a lifelong cultivator, we have good news for you. A recent study found that the outdoor hobby may do wonders for your wellbeing, mental health, and overall life satisfaction.

According to the study, conducted by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), people who garden daily have wellbeing scores 6.6 percent higher and stress levels 4.2 percent lower than those who do not garden at all.

It takes only two to three gardening sessions per week to reap these healthy benefits.

“This is the first time the ‘dose response’ to gardening has been tested and the evidence overwhelmingly suggests that the more frequently you garden the greater the health benefits,” said study lead author Dr. Lauriane Chalmin-Pui. “In fact gardening every day has the same positive impact on wellbeing than undertaking regular, vigorous exercise like cycling or running.”

As part of the study, the scientists researched why residents engaged in gardening. They monitored 5766 gardeners and 259 non-gardeners through an electronic survey distributed within the UK. The results revealed that six in 10 people garden because of the pleasure and enjoyment they get from it.

Just under a third of the participants claimed they garden for the health benefits.

The findings also indicated that gardening may boost mental health, with those with health issues stating that the outdoor hobby reduced feelings of depression, boosted energy levels, and reduced stress.

This study confirms what many passionate gardeners already knew: Something as simple as getting our hands dirty in the backyard can provide immense benefits for our mental and physical health.’

In 1982 Colin ruptured a disk in his lower back. When,

after many weeks of treatment, it hadn’t healed, he was advised by his specialist to have surgery which involved the removal of a disk and the fusing together of two vertebrae. The surgery was successful in the short term but over time his back deteriorated and the pain he had been previously suffering once again became a part of his everyday life.

In 2002 Colin aggravated his back and once again, the pain became so bad that he was again referred to a specialist. He was told by the orthopaedic surgeon reviewing his CT scan that his original surgery needed to be redone and that the next vertebrae down now needed to be fused with the other two. He recommended Colin wait as long as possible before having the surgery, as his back would be permanently stiff once it was done.

He lived with it until 2008 until he went onto a modern waterbed and that transformed his life.

Loemis midwinter festival is back for its sixth year Wellington’s midwinter Lǀemis festival is back with a fantastical mix of theatre, music, gourmet food and craft beer, and a fiery procession inspired by the solstice.

Lǀemis (pronounced lew-miss) first kicked off in 2016 and organiser Andrew Laking says this year’s festival is shaping up really well – he has had a lot more time to prepare and develop shows after Covid-19 put Lǀemis on pause last year.

Starting on June 11, Lǀemis events run up to the winter solstice on June 21.

Three brand new theatre works will premier at the festival: Kobolds, a journey into the dark by torchlight at Truby King Park; Werewolf, where actors and the audience come together in what feels almost like a game by daylight, but takes a more sinister turn at night; and The Witching Hours – two Lǀemis inspired radio plays recorded live with music, narration and sound effects.

A gourmet highlight is the vegan Botanic Feast at the Botanic Garden’s begonia house. This dinner is prepared by Max Gordy (former head chef at Hillside Kitchen) and Laura Greenfield (head chef at Field & Green).

The Begonia House will also be home to Ɯrthe, a giant 4m-tall tree elemental sculpture. Visitors are encouraged to write notes to Ɯrthe,

and the notes will go up in flames at the solstice procession (although not with the sculpture this year!)

Craft beer fanatics can get a taste of rare beers and the stories behind them, in a fascinating session with Garage Project head brewer Peter Gillespie.

Three new creations blend music,

art and literature: For the Dead explores the work of 14th-century composer Guillaume de Machaut and is accompanied by a huge scrolling artwork turned on cranks with shadow puppetry. Epilogue loosely follows the structure of a medieval mass or funeral with contemporary poetry and music,

and psych-rock band Birdfeeder presents The Veiled Isle.

Wellington’s Thistle Hall is the Lǀemis exhibition venue for local artists and craftspeople and a series of craft workshops will tutor participants in a range of skills from making margaritas and magical woodland dwellings to foraging

for food in the wild.

Silverstream sisters 12-year-old Makaia and nine-year-old Ruby Craig came face-to-face with the superstars of netball on centre court at TSB Arena before the Pulse vs Mystics ANZ Premiership game last Monday.

Makaia, a St Oran’s College student, and Ruby, a Silverstream School student, were ecstatic to have won the chance to meet captains Claire Kersten (Pulse) and Sulu Fitzpatrick (Mystics) and lead them onto the court as a part of the ANZ Future Captains programme.

“I’m always going to remember this.

I’ve always loved netball and it was so inspirational to watch them play,” said Ruby.

The Pulse-mad sisters had front row seats to the action, and Makaia said “I was clinging to the edge of my seat.

It was getting really close but then the Mystics got a few extra points.

I could see the sweat on the players, we were so close”.

Makaia and Ruby decided that Aliyah Dunn was their favourite player. “She is a really great shooter who supports her teammates, plus she has the same name as our older sister,” said Makaia.

Makaia have ambitious goals for their own games this season. “Dad has shown me how to move my feet fast around the court and how to catch the ball. It was so cool watching the Pulse play, I’m definitely going to play for a few years to come,” said Ruby.

“I’m going to try to get into the space so I can get passes down the court. When the Pulse were shooting, they pretended to throw one way but went another. It looked simple but was confusing for the other player,” said Makaia.

Watling’s brilliance clear yet understated BJ Wa t l i ng i s t h e q u ie t over-achiever whose efforts for the Black Caps cannot be ignored.

Watling was never destined for the headlines at any point in his career but he has been the workhorse, the quiet-achiever, the man in the engine room who made the past 10 years of success a little easier to come by.

Watling is the best wicket-keeper batsman in test cricket at the moment, a tag he will keep even after he retires following the World Test

Championship final in England next month.

He is the best test keeper we have produced, not bad considering he was a late bloomer to the role.

The 35-year-old has been a stalwart of the Test side since debuting in 2009 as an opener, going on to establish himself as a world-class keeper-batsman and claiming numerous records in his 73 Tests to date.

Watling holds the New Zealand Test dismissals record with 249

catches (excluding 10 as a fielder) and eight stumpings - the best numbers of any current Test keepers.

His bowler-keeper catching combinations with Tim Southee (73), Trent Boult (55) and Neil Wagner (53) occupy the top three spots on the New Zealand record list.

He has eight Test centuries to his name and New Zealand records for the fourth and fifth highest partnerships – 362 with Brendon McCullum against India at the Basin Reserve in 2014, and 365*

with current captain Kane Williamson against Sri Lanka at the same ground a year later.

Watling scored big runs under pressure.

When the chips were down, he was often the one to produce the gritty, stubborn knock to rescue his side.

In fact, it felt at times, he was the best player for a crisis and the worst player to bat with the game under control.

The bigger the moment, the better

the innings.

He’s been an invaluable link with the bowlers too.

I’m sure they have bowled better knowing there was a safe pair of hands willing to snaffle any edge that came his way.

Those looking at the short-term could see Watling’s retirement as a way to get the magnificent Devon Conway in the team, but the reality is that the traits Watling brought to the team will be hard to replace any time soon.

North Wellington advanced in Chatham Cup

Regular top level football took a scheduled break last weekend as the men’s and women’s national knock out competitions took centre stage through the Chatham Cup and Kate Sheppard Cup respectively.

The top side in any club can enter the men’s and women’s equivalents of the English FA Cup and these competitions offer the opportunity to take a break from the weekly grind of regular leagues. In addition there is added spice with the likely prospect of playing sides in different leagues and ultimately for the few towards the end of the competitions, playing in different parts of the country.

Round one in the Chatham Cup saw a variety of match ups with the likes of Whangarei FC defeating Royal New Zealand Navy 4-2 while at the other end of the country Gore Wanderers beat Grants Braes 3-2. On the local scene, almost all games went to plan. North Wellington FC were at home to Seatoun AFC, the latter of which plays two divisions

lower in the Capital 1 league.

Long story short, Norths did enough for a 2-1 win with fine second half goals to Scott Henderson and Ihaia Delaney. Seatoun got one back in stoppage time and the Norths performance was far from convincing. Some wondered if Seatoun was a registered charity as Norths kept giving away possession on a regular basis. With both sides missing or resting key players, the rust will well and truly have to be shaken out when the regular leagues resume this week.

In other matches featuring local teams, Premier League Island Bay defeated their bigger Central League cousins Petone 4-1, Tawa walloped Douglas Villa 10-1, Waterside Karori had no trouble over Brooklyn United 5-0, Upper Hutt City defeated Victoria University 3-1 and Stop Out did just enough for a 2-1 win over Wellington Marist.

In round 1 of the Kate Sheppard Cup, most of the big guns enjoyed a free pass with a bye into round 2. The Petone ladies did have to put their boots on though and had a solid 5-0 win over Brooklyn.

Johnsonville outgunned by Marist St Pat’s Johnsonville were not able to match it with Swindale Shield heavyweights Marist St Pat’s, losing 43-15 at Evan’s Bay Park on Saturday.

Johnsonville had been competitive in each of their first five games in 2021 but outclassed by the speed and execution of a Marist St Pat’s side which

sits second on the competition ladder.

The hosts outscored Johnsonville seven tries to two.

Johnsonville coach Jason Adamson says his team’s effort can’t be disputed but the option-taking at crucial times let them down.

“We are making mistakes at

the wrong time,” he says.

“Our scrum had parity and at times dominated but our line out did not function at all and that makes it tough against the big teams.”

“We’ve had props and hookers who have played big minutes for us, almost 80 every week and that takes a lot of doing.”

Versatile forward Serge Hollis, playing openside flanker crossed for a try as did reserve front rower Mike Faimalo.

Johnsonville had All Blacks assistant coach John Plumtree at training last week and he will be there again tonight as the team prepares to face competition leaders Old Boys University on

Saturday.

Jason says his team is adjusting to the referees interpretations around the breakdown while offside penalties continue to be a problem during the 80 minutes.

“We just need to tidy-up certain areas and hopefully we’ll be getting closer to put in an 80 minute performance this week.
