It was back to school for Cruz Morrison Phoebe, and Tylah Deys on Monday.

Back to school Students across New Zealand headed back to school on Monday as Alert Level 2 restrictions allowed, including students in Wainuiomata. This meant all of the students switched their at-home online learning back to classroom learning. Fernlea Primary

Students were excited to be getting outside and seeing all of their friends. Life is different now though. Students have to eat lunch in separate classrooms and make sure they sanitise their hands before and after. Then they’re allowed to go and play.

All of the schools are taking details of visitors to make sure they have all that they need for contact tracing. No more high fives or hugs either! They all know it’s important to keep their distance.

Monday Munchies helps fill bellies By Megan Connolly

Bianca Thompson’s aim is to have no child go hungry while at school with Monday Munchies. And to start, she’s working on making Monday lunches for usually over 20 children and teenagers. “It has been proven that children respond better in class when they are not hungry,” Bianca says. In February, she was in inspired by another group with the same name in Porirua and knew there was a need in Wainuiomata too. “I saw a lady outside my house saying to her child she couldn’t send him to school because she didn’t have anything for him for lunch,” she says. Since Bianca took on the mission, the amount of children she is handing out lunches to is growing every week. “It’s just myself who does it just simply because my name is on the line and it’s also something to keep me busy while my daughter is at preschool.” Before the COVID-19 came along Bianca was doing as many as 40 lunches for children on a Monday. “I struggle to say no. I just don’t have the heart to do it.” The lunches include everything from homemade muffins, fruits, chips and nuts or raisins. Also, I do a sandwich which I normally rotate with one week a spread

and cheese, egg and luncheon or ham the next. “Generally, I work with whatever I can a get hold of.” Community Board member Jodie Winterburn has jumped on board and assisted Bianca in setting up a Give-a-little page where anyone from the community can donate. You can also help by donating food which she would be more

than happy to collect from you, she adds. “If anyone wants to do their bit, in your next weekly shop drop something in the trolley that you think could contribute to the lunches,” she says. If you would like to contact Bianca, there is a Facebook page you can contact her on called Monday Munchies. Alternatively, you can send

her an email at thompson. bianca13@yahoo.com. “I would just like to thank everyone who has dropped items off to me or contacted me to help especially my regular donors. “And anyone who has donated to the give-a-little page. It’s you guys who are the true heroes to this story.

Online public meeting for budget Public feedback is still currently being sought on the Council’s Draft Annual Plan, which was unanimously approved by Councillors at its meeting on May 7. The budget proposes to halve a previously signalled rates increase, and invest in key projects like water infrastructure.

Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry says public meetings are an important way the Council can ensure meaningful public engagement on issues affecting Lower Hutt and allow the public to share their views. There is one final public meeting to be held on Thursday, May 21 via Zoom.

Getting us through Kia tae ki tua Have your say on our Draft Annual Plan 2020-2021 at haveyoursay.huttcity.govt.nz

People need to register their attendance by visiting huttcity. govt.nz/meetcampbell. “The virtual public meetings I am hosting will give people an opportunity to hear directly from me on what Council is planning for the year ahead. It will also be a chance to ask questions and give feedback.”

Campbell Barry says he encourages residents to attend these meetings and raise the issues that are most important to them. Anyone who isn’t online, and would like to know more about Council’s Draft Annual Plan, can also call 04 570 6666 and provide feedback over the phone.

Flights boosted for Queens Birthday Weekend

PAK’nSAVE staff have been working throughout all levels of lockdown. Photo: Megan Connolly By Megan Connolly

Petone PAK’nSAVE employees and Wainuiomata residents, Tracey McGregor and Sharyn Kiernan, have been essential workers for the last seven weeks throughout alert level 4 and level 3 lockdown. The drastic move into complete lockdown in March was daunting at first, they say. “We had to get used to a new way of doing things,” Sharyn says. “Our bosses put so many things in place to make it easier

to do our jobs. They’ve done everything to keep us safe. “In the beginning it was quite crazy and there was a lot of panic buying. No one really knew what to expect.” What has been the most surprising to Sharyn is how much of what they are doing has become “quite normal”. “We change ourselves to do what needs to be done and what is needed for our country.” What makes the community at PAK’nSAVE great is the way they all support and help

each other out. In normal circumstances, Tracey works as the office manager. But because of the change of routine, it has been all hands on deck and she has been helping out at the checkouts. “We’ve always been like that. If people need help here we just go and do it,” she says. “We look after each other here. It’s a home away from home” Sharyn adds. PAK’nSAVE has around 200 employees with around a quarter of those making the

trip from Wainuiomata. “Customers have been good and quite understanding,” Tracey says. “A lot of them have been saying ‘thank you’ for working.” The most memorable moment for Sharyn is when to young children dropped off a ‘thank you’ card. “I tell you, it brings tears to your eyes. It is gooey but lovely. It’s the simple things,” Sharyn says, “People do appreciate what we’re doing.”

Air New Zealand will restart its Wellington-Queenstown route in time for Queen’s Birthday weekend and is also adding additional flights between Auckland and Queenstown. The airline will resume flying between the capital and Queenstown on May 28. Air New Zealand General Manager Networks Scott Carr says it’s been great to start flying to Queenstown from both Christchurch and Auckland in the past week and the airline is now looking forward to getting Wellington services underway. “We’ve been sufficiently encouraged by the demand for seats into Queenstown since publishing our schedule for Alert Level 2 that we’re bringing forward the resumption of services from Wellington,” he says.

Mall renovations begin Renovations began at Wainuiomata Mall on Monday after a blessing was held at the weekend. This is the first major stage of renovations set to be done on the vacant building after the removal of asbestos earlier in the year. “It was an absolutely beautiful blessing,” Esther King from Love Wainuiomata says. Countdown supermarket will be the first area locals can expect to see changes. Countdown’s head of property Matt Grainger says they’re really excited to be starting the first stage of construction. “Over the next few weeks, hoardings will be erected and the existing buildings will be demolished to make room for the new Countdown,” he says. “We’re really excited to start the next stage The mall was blessed at the weekend as the redevelopment began on Monday. Local business support Women’s Refuge Petone wool and blanket maker Stansborough Ltd is focusing on giving back to the community as they move into restarting their business. The group aim to donate $50 from every purchase to the Women's Refuge in Lower Hutt which helps hundreds of local women. Over the last 30 years in Petone, many Wainuiomata locals have spent their time spinning and creating wool

blankets, owner Chery Eldridge, says. "Each season we launch a new range and try to help locals while doing it," she says. "This year, we hope it to be a collective item to remind people of this period. Blankets can give a sense of nurturing and protection which is a good thing at the moment. "Maybe we can give a bit of hope."

Cheryl's focus has always been on keeping the process 100 per cent sustainable. The wool comes from sheep on her farm in The Wairarapa, "People usually tend to keep these items forever." As many businesses are returning to work in Level 2, Cheryl says the team have been passionately working throughout quarantine. "We need it for our family and do it for our family," she adds. PBA

Q: How do you feel the government has handled COVID-19?

Anne Nicholas

Irene Miller

Margaret Willard

Megan Whitelaw

Tiriana Turara

Toni Smithies

“I think the Government have dealt with Corvid-19 so much better than other ‘world leading’ countries. New Zealanders have been the ‘world leaders’ yet again.”

“I don’t think that Covid 19 could have been handled any better. Jacinda is a star! As part of the older generation I would like to thank everyone who stayed at home to protect us.”

“I think the government has been very clear and decisive, just what we needed. It’s sad that with the election is looming a lot is being distorted.”

“I feel the government has responded incredibly well to an ever-evolving situation. It took hold of the world by storm and there was no way to be 100 per cent prepared.”

“Dawn Breaking, bold, inspiring and lead by a WOMAN deserving to be our Prime Minister.”

“I think everything has gone really well compared to other country’s strategies and there resulting outcomes.”

Hairdressers see a burst in haircuts Locals have been deprived of a haircut for the last weeks so it is no wonder that local hairdresser Headz For Hair has seen their workload doubled when the country moved into Alert Level 2 last week. Over a four day period from Thursday to Sunday, there were 250 people to go through the salon. Owner Susan Cowpland says that the atmosphere has been great since they returned. “People are very happy to be out and very happy with life,” she says. “A lot of people have done a big reassess of their lives. Lots of people are having restyles and bright colours like purple.” So many people are keen on getting their hair cut that the salon are booked out for the next three weeks. The main difference about getting your haircut now there is more restrictions before and after so the whole process now takes longer. “We’re so thankful for the huge support from locals. There have been some new faces which have been huge. “The community has been very

patient and realise we’re trying to get through as many people as we can.” Thankfully there have been no disasters that have come in to be fixed.

“We’ve seen a couple of short fringes but in general, nothing too out there. There is eight staff that work at

Hedz for Hair and all of them are locals. “T he more people suppor t their local business, the more

likely we will be able to take on more local youth which put jobs back into our community. “It’s about the bigger picture.” PBA

Youth work through lockdown Local group YOUth Inspire helps young people find employment around the Hutt. Some of whom have been working as essential workers throughout the lockdown period. Shanyah Haenga returned to work at Wainuiomata Countdown in April this year as the country settled into alert level 4 lockdown due to COID-19. "When I found out, I thought

'this is unbelievable'," she says. "I couldn't believe I finally had a job and especially one as an essential worker. I was really thrilled and happy because of the fact that this was my old job, I didn’t feel nervous about being back as I already had the experience. "But I did feel a bit a pressure knowing that every day was going to be crazy hectic." There has been many adjust-

ments to the routine, by Shanyah says the most interesting was getting straight back into work and in different departments than before. "What surprised me was the really lovely customers who would buy mini chocolate bars only to find out that they brought it for you because of the work you’re putting in during this crazy time." When times got tough, Shanyah says that it is her family that keeps

her going. "To all the young youths out there, set goals for yourselves and work hard towards them. "It’s not going to be an easy journey but I can tell you now that it’ll be worth. Every sacrifice, sweat, tears and stress will all be worth it." Elijah Maniapoto has been working as an essential worker at Pak'nSave Petone for five

weeks now. "It is not easy working as an essential worker," he says. "My mum has been keeping me on my toes and always making sure I feel alright during this time." An iced coffee every morning and a nice dinner cooked by my lovely mother for me every night is what keeps him motivated during this time.

MINUTES WITH

Get your frost protection on quickly

GARDENING THIS WEEK

Don’t get caught out: By Wally Richards There are a few things recently that we need to be 'Awake To' and 'On The Ball' with. Currently it’s getting colder and frosts are happening so get your Spray on Frost protection on quickly. Instructions are: Get the Vapourgard, place bottle in jug of hot water for about 15mins so it pours better. Mix at 15 mils per litre of warm water and spray over the foliage of plants and shrubs/ trees you want to protect such as citrus and frost tender plants. Spray on a sunny day in full sunlight so film dries quicker. One application gives down to minus 3 degrees frost protection within three days of application lasting for three months. Works a treat for occasional frost every few days but if there is two or more frosts night after night the plants have not recovered fully and extra protection is needed such as frost cloth or sacking etc. Use all the spray mixed up over other plants to finish off and then rinse out sprayer with warm to hot water spraying some to ensure that its all clean otherwise you may have problems next time you use. Areas where hard frosts are likely then add to the Vaporgard,

Wallys Liquid Copper this gives a greater degree of frost protection because of the layer of copper inside the film. Don’t spray over produce with the Vaporgard/copper mix as it does not wash off easy because of the Vaporgard film. Ok over citrus fruit as you peel them and don t eat the skins. While we are still allowed to grow our own food (I am not joking here as there are, or have tried to do, prevent this in some other countries), we have learnt that it pays to keep a range of vegetable seeds in packets in glass jars in fridge for future use. If you are able allow the best one of a crop to go to seed and collect the ripe seed, label it and store dry in a glass jar, sealed in the fridge. Grow as much food crops as you can 'naturally' without using chemicals but with a big range of minerals using things like Magic Botanic Liquid, Ocean Solids and Wallys Unlocking your soil potential. Use natural manures and compost teas to grow your produce. This will do two things, firstly you will have (most of the time) some fresh vegetables in the garden to pick and secondly and very, very importantly, you will have supreme food both in

taste and nutritional values, As a result you will have a great immune system and be able to shrug off diseases that others succumb too. Gardening: the first excuse I get from some is no room in the section to grow vegetables. These days we see town houses on small sections with concrete between home and boundary as one reader said recently to me in the retirement village where he lives. If you don’t have land yourself to grow crops on then have a wee think. Bet you know of some people thatdo have bigger sections that once sported nice vegetable gardens but because of health or age the owners are not using them anymore. In many cases I am sure that there are people in that situation not too far away from where you live who would be happy for you to use their land and share some of the produce for doing so. Get onto Neighbourly on the net locally to your area and put a message there. As my mum used to say, 'Where there is will, there is a way'. Problems? Ring me 0800 466464.

SPORTS TALK With Jacob Page

Jordan doc a slam dunk The Michael Jordan documentary has helped me through this lockdown. The 10-part documentary which concluded after five consecutive Monday night’s is nothing short of compulsive viewing. Whether the ESPN and Netflix documentary ensures Jordan will go down as the best basketballer player of all time

is doubtful but what isn’t in question is just how driven he was to win as a player. Jordan won six NBA championships in the 90s and was undefeated in the finals themselves. His brief stint in baseball to fulfill his slain father’s dreams, I’m confident in saying, would have seen him make the major leagues had it not been for a

Rent freeze set to change rental market The impact of COVID-19 and the Government’s move on March 26th to freeze residential rent increases for the next six months is likely to change the New Zealand rental market, according to the latest Trade Me Rental Price Index. Trade Me Property spokesperson Aaron Clancy said the national rental market had seen strong price growth in the last 24 months, but the impact of COVID-19 and the rent freeze could stop this growth in its tracks. “After many of New Zealand’s fifteen regions experienced months of solid price growth, the impact of

COVID-19 will significantly change the playing field for landlords and tenants in 2020,” Aaron says. “The rental price freeze will bring a sense of relief to renters that are facing many unknowns. But it may be a concern for landlords with uncertainty around their own costs. Ongoing discussions on potential council rate increases will be making some landlords nervous. “During these challenging times it’s important that there is clarity for both parties, so we hope landlords will have more certainty in the coming months.”

lockout season. Even the most hardcore Jordan or Chicago Bulls fans would have learnt plenty from the high calibre documentary. Jordan’s drive to succeed drove him to intense trainings and physical altercations with teammates, outrageous gambling on golf courses with friends and the launching of the Air Jordan shoes which is the

reason Nike is the global force it is today. Jordan was willing to win at anything by almost any cost. By his own admission, he does not have a gambling problem, he has a competition problem. Jordan is a global icon. The reality is, he’s bigger than basketball and I think that’s just how he would want it. The access and depth the ‘Last

Dance’ documentary has is unparalleled and it really is a great study of what it takes to be a superstar of a sport and stay there with a level of consistency rarely seen in modern day American sport. If you are a casual fan of the man who made the number 23 iconic, and you have a spare 10 hours over the winter, it’s well worth a binge-watch.

Extra funding for early childhood education By Melissa Zgomba

Young children will benefit from the latest Government announcement to restore 100 per cent funding to early childhood education services with fully qualified staff. “We’re thrilled that the Government acknowledges the importance of trained teachers for our tamariki. This truly is an investment in our future,” general manager of Hutt City Kindergartens Norma Roberts says. The increased funding will help the Hutt City Kindergarten Association, a not-for-profit

organisation, be in a stronger financial position. “This news is hugely significant as we have continued to support a 100 per cent qualified teacher workforce while only receiving funding of 80 per cent.” “Our focus has always been to provide the very best education for two to five-year-olds by employing fully qualified teachers. The full funding will enable us to further invest in our teachers, resources and buildings. It gives us certainty for the future,” Norma says. The teaching community have viewed the announcement as

appreciation for the important role they play in the lives of children. “This is a welcome boost and great recognition for our staff who have worked so hard to support our tamariki and community during the lockdown.” Hutt City Kindergartens is a member of New Zealand Kindergartens who has been lobbying the Government to reinstate the funding as it was one of their collation agreement promises. “We are delighted with the announcement and congratulate the Government on their decision.”
