Continued from page 1 Launching the bus got underway at the Remakery in Lower Hutt with a blessing and it was soon busy with people queuing for their first or second shots and a free strawberry plant to go with it.

Kokiri Marae general manager Teresea Olsen says there is still resistance out there but now they have the clinic on wheels they will be able to target areas of low vaccination rates.

“The more targeted approach for Maori is working better and on a Thursday night we have a whanau night with our pop

up in Naenae and it is working better,” Teresea says.

“With the bus we will be able to take it into areas that are high needs un-vaccinated parts of the community.”

Even though Wainuiomata has been well looked after with the Marae clinic there is still a lot of concern over low vaccination rates in parts of the community.

“We have got high numbers in Wainui in the Glendale area and Norfolk Street where they haven’t been vaccinated so we might be taking the bus down there and door knocking.”

“What we know is that when whanau have other pressing needs vaccination is a low priority especially if you are living in poverty and with family violence and those kind of things,” she says.

As well as this Teresea says they need to find a solution to vaccinating wahine who come into the women’s refuge.

“They will never get vaccinated. Their partners won’t let them get vaccinated and we are trying to think what we can do for them.”

With Kokiri’s new satellite base in Naenae there is real progress

being made Teresea says as it is a real high needs area.

“Last week when we started our clinics there it was absolutely obvious they wouldn’t have gone anywhere else. We wouldn’t have got them into the PHO on the high street,” she says.

“I am excited about the council buying the old post office in Naenae because they want to work with the community to determine what happens in there. We will be into those conversations because we have only got a small space and we want to expand our space and it would be good for us.”

Rhiannon inspires By: Gerald Rillstone Getting into the workforce became even more important for mum of two Rhiannon Nuku after her second baby was born and with the help from the Youth Inspire team she is well on her way.

Rhiannon graduated from the Youth Employability Programme recently and did her work experience while on the course at the Hutt Valley District Health Board and from there is now working in the Emergency Department.

“I originally saw an ad for Youth Inspire and everything was calling my name, if you’re interested in getting you learner license, work experience and skills for employment, I thought yes because at the time I

had had no experience in anything and didn’t know what I was doing,” Rhiannon says.

“I needed some help and I needed a license and I didn’t have the funds for a license and hadn’t really studied the road code so the course they do for the learners really, really helped.”

Prior to going on the course Rhiannon met with one of the facilitators at the Wainuiomata Library and she went over the course requirements which was two days a week of course work, two days of work experience and a day of job seeking.

“It fitted well with being a mum and doing the course as well,” she says.

Her first role was at Hutt Hospital in administration which she says was a totally new experience.

“I hadn’t really done admin before and I thought yes please I will definitely take it and I ended up doing medical records and patient files and it was really interesting, we dealt with 10,000 papers a day.”

After ten weeks of experience Rhiannon had a foot in the door and she picked up a job on reception in emergency and working in the department where they do COVID screening.

Although it is a casual role at the moment Rhiannon is taking as many shifts as she can working toward her goal of becoming a nurse.

“If I didn’t have the experience at Hutt Hospital I don’t think I would have realised I wanted to study nursing as before I came to Youth Inspire I had no idea of what my goals were other than sport,” she says.

Mandatory vaccination required Being vaccinated against COVID-19 will be mandatory for students and staff living and working in Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington-operated student accommodation in 2022.

Students wanting to live in one of the University’s halls of residence will be required to show evidence they have been fully vaccinated before they will be able to move into a room in the

halls, which will open for next year in February 2022.

Week to week New findings from the Consumer NZ sentiment tracker found that 15% of New Zealanders had no savings, and a further 27% were anxious about their level of savings and would like to have more tucked away.

The nationally representative survey found a fifth of those aged 50-59 had no savings at all, more than any other age group. While respondents in this age group are struggling to save, their looming retirements are weighing heavily on mind. Six out of 10 noted retirement as being one of their saving priorities (along with 71% of those aged 60-69 years old).

The standard of living for those in their 50’s and 60’s isn’t getting much better either. For both groups, only one in 10 felt their standard of living had improved over the past year.

Greater Wellington lifts the lid A campaign launched by Greater Wellington is cutting through confusion, showing the value the regional council adds to communities and the importance of its role in navigating change facing the region in the coming years.

The regional council’s multi-year ‘Listen to the Land – Whakarongo Tatou ki te Whenua’ information campaign focuses on Greater Wellington’s core environmental restoration, enhancement and protection roles to begin with – telling its story through street posters, digital billboards, online, radio and local and community newspapers.

Unlike the high profile services of city and district councils, such as rubbish collection, road maintenance and parking enforcement, much of Greater Wellington’s work deals with fundamental long term issues that lie behind and underpin regional development and resilience.

Chair of Greater Wellington Daran Ponter says the campaign is bang on time given rapid and significant changes to the range and intensity of services being provided by regional councils and potentially the structure through which they will be delivered.

“We need the public’s confidence if we are to successfully manage and steer the region through proposed changes to the way we manage and value water, the Resource Management Framework, and the likely review of our system of local democracy and governance. These are huge issues which will affect people in the region for decades to come.

Time to scrub up on toxic algae Summer swimmers, dog owners and the community should be scrubbing up on spotting toxic algae as we approach the warmer months and our refreshing rivers beckon.

Toxic algae is harmful to people and deadly to dogs, so owners need to take the lead and check either the LAWA website or Greater Wellington’s safe to swim webpage before getting in the water.

“Dogs like the smell and taste of toxic algae mats. Scarier still, an amount as small as a 50 cent piece, is enough to kill a dog” Dr Evan Harrison, Team Leader of Marine and Freshwater says.

Vigilance is key as dogs are likely to sniff out the leathery dark green or black toxic algal mats which can wash up at river edges.

Prevention however, is better than any treatment so checking for warnings online before swimming and letting your dog in the water is paramount Dr Harrison says .

Greater Wellington also urges caution to members of the public.

The risk for dogs is higher but we also need to take care ourselves and our tamariki. The danger is still there for us”.

Awareness for summer swimmers and peo-

ple with dogs about toxic algae is supported

by Land Air Water Aotearoa (LAWA), who provide a platform for swimming water quality data and warnings across New Zealand.

“Water quality sampling is routinely conducted at over 80 freshwater and coastal sites region wide. It’s this data which is shared” Sheryl Miller, Senior Advisor, Environment says.

Rather than rely solely on physical monitoring results, Greater Wellington uses a ‘risk model’ to identify safe swimming levels.

This takes into account changes in water quality due to rainfall and the ‘long term condition of the site”.

Communities can be sure that they are seeing up-to-date information about the suitability for swimming at popular swimming sites” she says.

Members of the public who think they or their dogs have swallowed toxic algae should seek urgent medical attention by dialling 111 and for their dogs, take it immediately to the nearest vet.

Laying down strong foundations for future whanau Construction of nineteen new homes that will see whanau, currently in housing stress is well on the way in Taita Lower Hutt.

Takai Here Tungata is the first housing development driven by an innovative housing partnership between Hutt City Council, Kahungunu whanau Services, Te Runanganui o Te ti Awa, and Council-controlled organisation Urban Plus Limited.

Kahungunu whanau Services Chief Executive Ali Hamlin-Paenga says, “There are too many whanau who are homeless and our tamariki should not be living in emergency housing. We must change the narrative for our future generations. We have some big goals and aspirations for the people we serve and this housing development is the start.

Kahungunu whanau Services is committed to having 150 homes under construction in the next 18 months and the only way we can do this is by partnering in this way.”

Kura Moeahu, Chair of Te Runanganui o Te ti Awa says the Runanga fully supports and is behind Takai Here Tangata. “It’s really satisfying knowing that these homes are now in motion. We want to support and enable our whanau into having a good home that is warm and safe.”

Within the full construction crew of builders, plumbers, electricians and other trades on site there are over a dozen apprentices working on this project.

The homes are expected to be completed and delivered to the partnership for whanau to move in later in May 2022.

Aladdin finally makes it to the stage By: Gerald Rillstone Getting underway on November 3rd this years Acting Out production of Aladdin Junior has finally made it to the stage.

Acting Out’s Jeremy Yuile says they will be putting on six shows this year with level two restrictions only allowing for 70 tickets for each show.

“Because the High School is under renovations we negotiated to be at the old college and we were to be underway a month ago but it was delayed because of the lock-down. We didn’t want to cancel

it because the kids have been rehearsing for a year”. Jeremy says.

“Plus we have a show lined up for next year, Into the Woods, it is a really cool show.”

The main reason for choosing Into the Woods he says it is an easier show to manage because they are not sure what venue they will be at next year.

“We can’t be at the old college because Wainuiomata Little Theatre will be doing their show here and we don’t know if the High School venue will be ready yet,” Jeremy says.

Council begins gambling consultation Hutt City Council is reviewing the use of pokies machines across Te Awa Kairangi as part of its wider vision to create a city of thriving communities.

A range of options for regulating and administering the number of gaming machines and venues are proposed as part of a review of its Gambling and Board Venue policy.

Hutt City Council’s Policy, Finance and Strategy Committee Chair, Cr Simon Edwards says the council’s vision is a city where everyone thrives.

“We’re reviewing this Gambling and Board Venue policy using that as our guiding principle. With this in mind, we want to engage with residents to help guide us towards the best policy for our communities.”

The council is seeking community feedback on three different options: - reducing gaming machine numbers and venues across Lower Hutt over time by blocking relocations or mergers - Capping gaming machine numbers in the city to 325, (bringing us into line with the national average per capita) and encouraging venues to move to the central business districts of Petone and Lower Hutt - Maintaining its current policy.

This week, the council will begin a wide-ranging consultation process involving Lower Hutt residents, community groups and venue operators, alongside charities and other organisations that rely on gaming revenues.

“We know that gambling places

pressures on vulnerable families and communities. At the same time, we’re aware of the high level of community and sector interest in this issue, particularly among those organisations that benefit from funding via gaming machines. We want feedback from as many interested parties as possible to ensure we make the right decisions for everyone.,” he says.

“Overall, we want to adopt a more proactive approach to reducing gambling and gambling harm, for individuals, their whanau and communities. In addition, Council will explore options for providing support to services that help those with a gambling problem.”

Fleming for the future?

The return of Stephen Fleming to the Black Caps setup 13 years after he retired as a player could be a look into the future.

Fleming will be part of the coaching group for the twenty20 World Cup. Fresh from becoming the Indian Premier League’s most successful coach after leading his Chennai Super Kings to their fourth title, Fleming looks to be the perfect

foil to help his old team go deep in the format’s World Cup in subcontinent conditions.

As a player, Fleming was widely respected as one of the best captains in the game and his mindset seems to have served him well as a coach.

It would surprise no one to one day see the 48-year-old become the New Zealand coach.

If success in T20 cricket is con-

sidered enough to stake a claim, then Fleming has an irresistible resumé.

Coaching in the IPL and in T20 franchise cricket will be far more financially lucrative than coaching the Black Caps ever will be.

Fleming, who claims he had some time before his MIQ spot was available to return home, was only too happy to help out but it will be up to him in the long term

whether he sees a future doing the role of coaching his old team.

The former top-order batsman is still considered young by coaching standards and the current crop of New Zealand players has far more talent than any national team he captained in the 1990s or 2000s.

Perhaps the prospect of coaching genuinely world class players for his home country could prove

a tantalizing prospect with time.

If New Zealand Cricket are smart, they will already be plotting a plan for after this Gary Stead/Kane Williamson era.

Fleming is well versed in handling the media, is calm and articulate under the scrutiny of journalists and fans alike.

They could do far worse than having Fleming’s name in the mix for when the time comes.

Scholarship support for sport

By Gerald Rillstone Leader of the Lower Hutt South based youth Services Union Dallas Serj has developed a new scholarship aimed at support for youth in sport.

As soon as the Wellington region moved into level 2 Dallas says they launched the scholarships aimed at helping families who couldn’t afford to send their kids to sports tournaments or pay for equipment.

“It had been in the back of my mind to run a sports scholarship and there are a few different fields they can fall into to get funding from us,” he says “It ranges from us paying up to about twenty to thirty five percent of the costs for them to go to the event or if person is already connected with us we offer up-to forty percent of the funding.”

If it is over thirty percent Dallas says it comes under the rules for paying their pay it forward scheme which means seven point five percent needs to be paid back and five percent of that goes to helping cover the cost for the next scholarship.

“It has been really nice being able to help some of the kids,” Dallas says.

“The funds come from donations we have saved up throughout the year and I put in fifty percent of what I make each week into the groups account to help out as well and I don’t mind putting money into doing something.”

Sporty slashes payment processing fees New Zealand owned sports technology company, Sportsground Limited, has announced a major reduction in the costs associated with people participating in Kiwi sport.

Sportsground Limited provides the Sporty.co.nz platform, used by over 3,500 sports clubs, associations, and schools across New Zealand to register over 500,000 people each year into organised sport.

The Sporty.co.nz platform lets organisations accept payments online and now supports Stripe and POLi as additional payment options. The transaction fee for Stripe is 2.9% + $0.30c and the fee for payments processed through POLi is 1% + GST. CEO Mike Purchas stated, “The last year has been tough on sport.

Many clubs and associations are struggling financially, so we’re pleased to have found a way to

reduce a significant ongoing cost for them.”

“We’re especially excited about the exclusive partnership between Sporty and POLi. Not only does this reduce payment processing fees to 1% + GST, but since most sports organisations are not-forprofits, their total fee is capped at $1 + GST per transaction. This tiny rate is huge news,” Purchas said.

New Zealand since 2007, and is managed by Master Distributor, Merco Limited. POLi Payments is a wholly owned subsidiary of Australia Post.
