“In New Zealand? New Zealand? This has to be fake news,” she thought.

“No. This is not New Zealand.”

Her own family in Egypt contacted her and begged her to stop wearing her hijab (headscarf) to keep herself safe.

“I told them ‘No. Because I’d be a different person’.

“But I know many Muslim women are thinking about that.”

Mai had made her own decision about wearing the headscarf as a schoolgirl at her

convent in Egypt.

Her principal had gently counselled her, making sure that Mai knew the decision was a life-long commitment and she has never doubted for a minute that it was right for her.

“We just need to be strong.

Not afraid,” she says.

She says the support at the vigil in the Basin Reserve on Sunday, when thousands of New Zealanders gathered to mourn together, was amazing.

“So many hugs. I was totally flying,” she says.

“People are saying ‘We are praying that you are safe. We

are protecting you’.”

Mai says within a year of arriving, she felt like a Kiwi.

During that first year, when she found people smiling at her it was, she says, “like a different zone “. She wasn’t used to it.

“Now I’m more Kiwi. My personality has changed. Being Kiwi is a culture and Kiwis have good relationships with everyone.

“They love to help all people.”

What has happened is not she says, from us. “And I am sure it will not happen again.”

“Our people are now angels in heaven.”

The women have been asked to wear white to demonstrate that belief and now she says, they have to move forward.

“White refers to peace in Islam.”

The worry is, however,for the families, says Mai. She points out that fifty who have died from the Moslem community, in itself only 1 percent of New Zealand’s population, represent a great loss.

Ngaio Gorge job long and expensive

“It will be a very long and expensive job to completely rectify the damage done by “mother nature” to the Ngaio Gorge Road,” says Wellington City Councillor Chris Calvi-Freeman.

Since a major slip on the road in 2017 the road has been undergoing strengthening work and the container wall protecting road users from loose soil and falling rocks is a familiar sight.

At the time of the major rockfall Chris says, council received dedicated, expert advice and action.

He says Wellington is privileged to have had this from engineers, consultants and contractors, and he is grateful for the team’s dedication and the patience shown from users of the gorge.

The city council’s 10-yearplan allocated nearly $11m to secure the major road connecting the northern suburbs and the city.

The container wall was extended uphill recently to protect road users during the geotechnical drilling work and will be removed at the last stage of construction and once the slope is stabilised.

The work will take 52 weeks to complete and council expects to remove the container wall by September next year, with the expected project completion date around October.

Long-term, council is considering the option to realign the road where the two main slips happened, continuing to improve its resiliency and safety to road users.

Newlands College production set to enthrall

The Onslow Residents’ Community Association is holding its annual meeting on Tuesday March 26 at 7pm in the Khandallah Town Hall, with guest speaker Greg Campbell, chief executive of the Greater Wellington Region Council.

His topics include the work of the Council, how the buses are faring and his vision for the Wellington region.

All residents are welcome.

This year’s Newlands College production, scheduled for the end of May, is set to be one of the brightest and best ever.

The musical is always a big event on the school’s calendar, and Beauty and the Beast, chosen by co-directors Craig Milmine and Jonathon Skinner, was challenging.

The musical has many characters – and costumes - as the storyline includes an enchantress who places a curse on an arrogant young prince. He becomes an ugly beast and his castle’s attendants turn into household objects until he learns to love and the spell is lifted.

Craig says the 2017 Disney film has reignited interest in the fairy tale and, he says, they had the biggest number ever of auditions.

He had taken a role himself in the first New Zealand production of Beauty and the Beast, staged by Wellington Musical Theatre. “I was the Baker. And a salt shaker!”

The $1m worth of costumes for that production had been made by Weta Workshops and his first thought was to hire those - if he could find them.

Sadly, many of the originals had been lost in the Christchurch earthquake and the rest are in use, borrowed, or damaged, or lost.

So Jonathan put out a call on the internet and found that Havelock North College had costumes for hire.

With a bit of work, they are proving ideal for their purposes and work is also going ahead on the set. Students studying set design in the performing arts as part of NCEA are creating them.

inbrief news $6m from Giveallittle As of Tuesday midday, Victim Support had received over $6 million through its online Givealittle campaign, launched in support of victims affected by Friday’s shootings in Christchurch.

“This is an unprecedented fundraising response to an unprecedented tragedy in New Zealand and we thank everybody who has donated,” said Victim Support Chief Executive Kevin Tso. He says the amount is overwhelming and reflects the tragedy’s widespread ripple effect and the human desire to help others in need.

Wellington prices up First home buyers are the most active in the Kiwi market according to a recent report.

Wellington represents one of the strongest movers of New Zealand’s main centres, with an annual upwards change of 9.2 per cent in the median sale price, currently $638,750.

Sales volume are down, as are the number of buyers. However with the annual change occurring, it indicates Wellington is currently a very competitive market.

Two scooter companies chosen Wellington City Council has selected two companies to roll out the trial of the city’s first electric scooter share scheme.

Licences will be given to locally owned start-up company Flamingo and to Jump, which is owned and operated

by Uber.

Wellington Mayor Justin Lester says the trial will help the Council to determine the city’s policy around micromobility transport, which includes e-scooters and bike share schemes.

He says the e scooter trial means we can test the demand, how e-scooters fit in the context of Wellington, and rider behaviour.

Council officers are developing a code of practice that will be the subject of a report going back to Councillors next week.

Local student wins top award Research into a problem that could help scientists better understand the risks of avalanches and slips has won an 18-year-old former Onslow College student the $50,000 Prime Minister’s Future Science Prize for 2018.

Finnegan Messerli, now doing joint maths and physics majors at Victoria University of Wellington, was on Tuesday last week presented with the award for his physics research.

That made him the third Onslow student to do so in the prize’s ten-year history. And all three of those students were taught by Kent Hogan, Onslow’s Head of Science. It wasn’t just the knowledge, mentoring and support Kent offered but, says Finn, he was also supported by Kent’s “amazing network” of people able to offer advice and equipment.

It all began when, as captain of the New Zealand team at the International Young Physicists Tournament in Beijing, he was asked to explain why grains, such as sand or salt, form a cone-like pile when they are poured on to a surface.

Malcolm Davie, chairman of the home’s Board of Trustees, says the decision had to be made because of “an untenable financial situation”.

Malcom says the stand-alone facility, employing 45 staff has, in recent times had “significantly lower residential occupancy levels”.

They had, he said, been operating in deficit. They had reviewed costs and endeavoured to increase occupancy for some time, but continuing to operate was no longer sustainable.

“There has been a significant increase in aged care capacity available in the Wellington and Hutt Valley areas, with major national chains

building facilities.”

This impacted on the number of people wanting to come to Johnsonvale,” he says.

“All residents have all been placed in other aged care facilities, he says, adding that assistance was provided for each resident and their family to assist them to move into another suitable home.

Some staff have, he says, already moved to other employers and support is being provided to the remainder.

“The trust was very disappointed to have to make a decision to close. The situation in no way reflects the quality of the staff and the care provided to residents,” he says.

On March 15, the Johnsonville Lions Club marked its 50th anniversary by handing over to the Wellington City Council two picnic benches at the Truscott Avenue entrance to Johnsonville Park. The Council was represented by Park Ranger Denise Clement, Deputy Mayor Jill Day and Wellington Councillors Malcolm Sparrow and Peter Gilberd.

“Our Lions club has a long history with this park, having cleared out the picnic area over 20 years ago.

Now families can enjoy a nice picnic and a safe BBQ spot” says Wayne Buck, “ the club’s projects guy”.

He acknowledged the hard work of local residents Jim and Shirley Ng in helping to clear weeds and plant native vegetation.

The cost was over $6500, funded by selling nearly 10,000 sausages outside the local Countdown store. “The community funded this, so it goes back to them.

“We just did the hard yards to make it happen,” says Wayne.

The Lions have also installed a drinking fountain, with a water bowl for dogs, so that the whole family can enjoy this picnic area.

President Ross Brown says he is glad to have a project such as this to celebrate 50 years of service that the Johnsonville Lions Club has given to the community.

Boost for Karori with breakfast launch A 7.15am breakfast function at the Karori Park Café on Tuesday April 16 will promote a new venture that has a group of passionate Karori business and community representatives enthused.

The establishment of the BID has gone before the Wellington City Council, which would be responsible for raising a levy on all local businesses, then immediately redistributing it for the group to use on local improvements.

Local councillor Andy Foster says the plan is for the Karori organisation to be operative by the start of the new financial year on July 1.

Three local women, all classified as “mature” (in the dancing world anyway) are relishing their latest challenge as dancers in The Witch Project.

They are part of the 50-strong Crows’ Feet dance group which is celebrating twenty years since its establishment by Jan Bolwell of Paekakariki, who still leads them in annual productions.

There are no auditions, with age the only criterion — from 35 on.

The women’s’ backgrounds range from zero to experienced professional dancers like Helen Balfour of Ngaio, who has danced all over the world.

She joined about 18 months ago and at 58 she is one of the ‘middle-aged’ members of the group. Some are in their 70’s.

Inge Mautz-Cooreman, also of Ngaio is, at 39, the baby of the group. Her early background took in just two years of ballet in Belgium. “A bit boring.” So she picked up an interest in South American and African dancing.

Denise Hitchcock, age 59 with some previous dance background, joined twelve years ago and has never stopped since.

All are enjoying The Witch Project, which is, says Helen, “a celebration of women”.

Inge reflects that the current “ditch the witch” movement dates well back into history. They will, for example, be dancing pieces from medieval times to the present.

Helen loves the later cauldron dance and the way women are represented as crones.

All are agreed that the big benefit of Crows’ Feet is the mix of women they meet and the creative process they are part of.

It takes a year for each production to be created, and the process is, they all agree “very unifying”.

The Witch Project will be presented at Soundings Theatre in Te Papa on Saturday March 23 and Sunday March 24 at 4pm.

Mayors, Deputy Mayors and some community leaders from around the Wellington region gathered on Monday March 18 at the Wellington Boys’ and Girls’ Institute (BGI) in MacDonald Crescent, Te Aro. They were launching the second round of their involvement in mentoring in the Tuia Wananga scheme. The scheme, being run locally by BGI, is undertaken under the umbrella of the nationwide Mayor’s Taskforce for Jobs initiative.

The initiative sees local Mayors Justin Lester, Wellington and Jill Day, Deputy Mayor Wellington, along with Ray Wallace Lower Hutt and Mike Tana Porirua, and other community leaders working with a young Maori from their district.

They are mentoring them for a whole year

on a one-on-one basis, encouraging and enhancing leadership skills.

The relationship is a mix of both informal and formal occasions that will assist the young person’s development as a local leader. There are also a series of national wananga for young Maori to connect with other rangatahi participating in the programme.

The relationship between the Mayor and rangatahi provides an opportunity to gain deeper insight into inter-generational issues, cultural values and experiences.

It not only provides a learning opportunity for a young Maori, but also for the leaders.

To date, over 50 councils have been participating in the programme and a wider demand for mentoring in community boards and NGOs has also emerged.

Queen Margaret College’s school production will be performed in April.

Into the Woods has music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.

The story is about a baker and his wife who are desperate to have a child and go on an adventure to help their cause.

Along the way they meet a variety of beloved fairytale characters, each with their own problem to solve and curse to break.

Queen Margaret College is one of the first schools in Wellington to put on the huge production, featuring over 50 cast members from the college, Scots College, St Patrick’s College and Wellington High School. There are over 70 musical numbers.

Year 13 Queen Margaret College Prefect Eleanor Burns is playing the Witch and is enjoying helping to put together the large scale production.

“I think this is the biggest production Queen Margaret College has ever done,” she says.

“Everything is coming together really well, It’s going to be incredible.”

Year 12 student Brooke Raitt is playing Little Red Riding Hood, a role she is reprising after appearing in the 2017 production at Victoria University.

She was drawn to the show again due to its “magnitude” and enjoys how enthusiastic her cast mates are.

“Everyone has put 100 percent into this production. I can’t wait for audiences to see our hard work come to life,” she says.

Into the Woods is running at the Queen Margaret College Hall from Wednesday April 3 – Saturday April 6 at 7pm.

Prisoners “still people” Dear Editor The March 6 issue of the Independent Herald interviewed readers on prisoner voting.

The readers’ responses represented a full spectrum.

A majority recognised the importance of prisoner participation in our democracy, of supporting reintegration and that prisoners are “still people”.

Letting prisoners vote is a matter close to the heart of the Wellington Howard League, which currently has a Parliamentary petition open asking MPs to let prisoners vote.

New Zealand’s position on prisoner voting differs to a number of other countries.

Germany, for example, uses prisons to encourage prisoners to vote.

Given most inmates are from disadvantaged backgrounds the use of prisons

to proactively encourage voting is enlightened.

Participation in democracy supports people to be law-abiding and assists community reintegration.

Denying the vote is uneven. Only offenders detained in prison lose their vote - not those on home detention or community-based sentences.

This disenfranchisement also disproportionately affects Maori because 50 per cent of prisoners are Maori.

This is an issue the Waitangi Tribunal is currently examining. Ultimately however the question of prisoner voting might be quite simply answered: Why not?

In Khandallah a white Toyota Fortuner stationwagon parked during the evening in Rangoon Street was broken into via a smashed left rear quarterlight window.

Three bags were stolen, one containing hand and power tools and the other two contained camping gear.

In Ngaio a blue 1995 BMW hatchback parked locked and secure on the street overnight in Bankot Crescent was stolen.

A black Nissan Navara utility vehicle parked overnight on the road in Abbott Street was broken into through a smashed window and a drill was stolen.

In Crofton Downs a Magnum electronic bicycle was stolen from Winston St. It had been left secured by a bike lock to an immovable object. Both the bike and the bike lock were taken.

In Karori a white Nissan Vanette light commercial van parked on the street in South Karori Road was broken into. The lock on the sliding door was wrenched off to gain entry and left on the ground.

A tool box containing a variety of tools, a GPS unit and two spray painting machines were stolen.

A red Toyota Corolla hatchback parked in Croydon Street had its rear registration plate stolen.

In Northland the rear registration plate was stolen from a white Nissan Caravan light van which had been parked overnight in Albemarle Road.

An attempt was made to siphon fuel from a red Ford Focus hatchback parked overnight in Northland Road. The petrol flap cover had been prised off and left on the ground. It is understood that no petrol was stolen.

A silver Subaru Impreza hatchback, parked overnight in Garden Road, was broken into. A left rear quarterlight window was smashed to gain entry.

The ignition barrel was damaged in an unsuccessful attempt to steal the vehicle.

A red Volkswagen Golf hatchback parked overnight in Orangi Kaupapa Road was entered through a smashed front passenger window. Its front left wing mirror was removed. Nothing appears to have been stolen from within the vehicle.

In Highbury a house in Disley Street was entered through a forced window at the rear of the house. The intruders drew the curtains and switched on the lights to aid their search. The study and a bathroom were ransacked. Alcohol and cash were stolen.

Paint testpots swapped for food Supporting Our Muslim community Resene Johnsonville ColorShop manager Sarah Roberts says she is thrilled by the response of local customers to their Hunger for Colour campaign.

The nationwide venture, in its fifth year, saw over 38,000

cans of food and pet food.

‘We’re really impressed by how many enthusiastic people supported us this year,” Sarah says.

“We’re very proud of being part of this campaign, working with people in our community to make a difference for struggling people here and adding colour to customer’s lives.”

In five years the campaign has collected almost 190,000 cans to support struggling New Zealanders.

The cans have been a timely boost to Salvation Army foodbanks, restocking shelves after the busy Christmas and back to school period, Salvation Army social services national manager Jono Bell says.

“With winter just around the corner and our centres starting to run low on stock they really appreciate Hunger for Colour.

“It’s a relief for them to know that generous people in their communities always get behind this campaign.

“This support makes a huge difference in their planning for the extra people who rely on us for help over winter.”

The March 15 slaughter of Muslim families attending prayers at their mosques in Christchurch has horrified New Zealanders.

We are proud that our tradition of hospitality to new arrivals continues in today’s largely urban society.

That is us.

But the unthinkable has happened and we now need to support the victims, their families and friends.

It is ironic that the Multicultural Council of Wellington had planned a race relations day at the Central Library on Saturday to celebrate our ethnic diversity but, like many other events around the country, it was postponed in respect for those who are left to grieve.

Wellington’s Muslim community is small and so few of us have personal contact with them, as individuals or a group. I have

the privilege of knowing some.

We share the same values of community spirit, hospitality and support of others.

Before Christmas, my wife and I attended the family fun day in Johnsonville, organised by Wellington’s Al-Ameen mosques.

Its only differences from other community fairs were that it provided breaks for prayers and that some of the women wore the dress and head coverings appropriate to their faith. Other than that, it was a traditional Kiwi fair with games, food and face-painting for children. We shared their hospitality, fun and food.

It was people like these who were killed in Christchurch.

We must not let that happen again and can each play our part by extending hands of friendship to all Kiwis.

GWRC rate rise of 6.5 percent proposed A rates rise of 6.5 percent for 2019-20 has been proposed to fund investment in priority areas previously set out in Greater Wellington Regional Council’s Long Term Plan 2018-28.

Continued investment in key regional infrastructure and resilience, including flood protection, environmental protection and public transport, are features in the 2019-2020 annual plan, to be considered at its council meeting on Thursday March 21.

The proposed rates increase equates to 97c per week for the average residential ratepayer and is 0.6 percent higher than forecast in

the Long Term Plan.

Actual rates will vary by region based on residential and commercial property valuation.

A council spokesperson says the proposed increase reflects the ongoing costs of debt servicing to cover Greater Wellington’s capital investment programme, such as property acquisition and construction costs for Lower Hutt’s RiverLink flood protection scheme and investment in rail and bus assets.

It also covers significant cost pressures from the increasing cost of insurance for their portfolio of assets, including its share of the rail network.

Higher costs have also been incurred for fuel, which affect Greater Wellington’s contracts with bus operators, and for additional bus services introduced in response to public demand.

Greater Wellington chair Chris Laidlaw says: “We are looking forward to progressing a programme of work that will be of immense value to the region.

“Council has tried its very best to minimise the rate increase and to achieve a fair balance between avoiding too much pressure on ratepayers and ensuring we can continue to advance long term programmes that bring significant GWRC Chairman Chris Laidlaw

benefits to the region.”

As Council’s programme has not changed materially from that outlined in its Long Term Plan, agreed last year, Greater Wellington will not seek formal submissions.

Instead, it will inform the community about what’s proposed for the Annual Plan 2019-2020 through the news media, advertising, online channels and printed material.

Councillors will be out and about at community and stakeholder meetings over the coming months to discuss the plan and get feedback.

Residents of Khandallah and local government representatives gathered at Khandallah Town Hall on Sunday to discuss a proposed ‘Bottle-O’ in the village centre.

Wellington city councillor Diane Calvert called a public meeting after opposition for the liquor store from locals caused a stir within the tight-knit community.

On March 6, Kartik Bardiyani, owner of six other bottle stores around New Zealand, lodged an application with the District Licensing Committee for a new off licence at 5 Ganges Road, under the approved lease of Johnsonville Property Trust (JPT).

Wellington Mayor and director of JPT, Justin Lester, spoke at the meeting and although acknowledged Bardiyani as a “really good business operator” said “On this one, I am in disagreement with the members of the Trust in that I oppose the application for the licence.”

Other members of the JPT opted not to attend the hearing.

The majority of attendees echoed Justin’s opposition, citing concern for the four already existing licensed premises within the suburb and the close proximity of three primary schools, two kindergartens, and a wide range of community and educational facilities nearby.

Several patrons also raised fears

for the younger demographic within the community, who could potentially gain access to inexpensive, high volumes of alcohol more easily, while detrimentally impacting the safety of the suburban village.

Wellington Hospital physician Alistair Neill said he was “overwhelmingly impressed by the harm that can be done by excessive alcohol availability, especially at high concentrations”.

Those who wish to formally object have grounds to do so until March 27, 11.59pm, after which a hearing would be held, and the district license committee would issue a written decision as to whether the application had been approved or declined.

Vigil at Ngaio Scout Hall supports the Muslim community

Fifty candles flickered alongside flowers and handwritten cards as, on Sunday, sixty people sat in the Ngaio Scout Hall, heads down, in a moment of silence.

They remembered the victims of Christchurch’s massacre of 50 Muslim people at prayer.

Group Leader Hadyn Nicholls held back tears as he spoke, saying Scouts had been in Ngaio a long time and were there to support the community.

He knew many Ngaio residents didn’t want to travel into the city for the vigil at the Basin Reserve so made the last minute decision to hold a local vigil..

“I had no idea how many would turn up. It’s nice to be there for the community, that’s what Scouts is about.”

Katie Bramley, a local teacher who worked with refugees, was filled with grief and sat in tears. “That could’ve been my families, that could’ve been the kids I taught.”

She was moved by the local event. “It’s so nice to have a place where you can be connected to your community and grieve.”

Assistant Group Leader Andrew Evans said it showed there was a need for the Ngaio community to come together.

He felt that in a small, local setting people were able to bring their chldren, when they otherwise might not have done.

There is a rich history in these hills!

Maori pa existed at Makara and Ohariu, at Ngauranga and Kaiwharawhara. Maori travelled across the land, hunted in the bush clad hills and built and maintained their gardens. European settlement from 1840 saw this land purchased and become part of the NZ Company's first colony. The hundred acre blocks were carved out of this landscape and NZ's first organised farming scheme was devised. The early settlers followed Maori tracks to their new homes and so the Bridle Track and the first Old Porirua Road led settlers out of the city.

The Ames' Hotel, on the Old Porirua Road, was run by Mary Ann Ames since 1855. She and her husband James previously ran the South Seas Hotel, on the Hutt River, but when James died in 1850, Mary Ann sold this establishment and moved to the Johnsonville area. The Ames' Hotel was later renamed Railway in the 1880''s and the building was demolished only fairly recently.

Crusaders name must go on Sport barely matters after the tragedy which happened in Christchurch on Friday.

Quite rightly, a host of sport and community events were cancelled as a mark of respect to the victims and those affected.

Included in that was the cancelled Super Rugby game between the Highlanders and Crusaders in Dunedin.

It didn’t take long for media organisation, Stuff, on the back of social media, to write a column questioning whether what happened on Friday meant

the Crusaders name needed a serious rethink.

The column, which ran without a byline — surprise, surprise, had a largely negative response from people on Facebook.

The tragedy will mean that our way of life will be questioned, laws will be changed but to alter the name of one of New Zealand’s most successful sports teams because of one disgraceful individual and his acts, is knee-jerk and an outcome of raw emotion spilling over.

This is political correctness

gone mad.

On Sunday night, the Crusaders released a statement acknowledging the chatter saying “For us, the name is a reflection of the crusading spirit of this community.

“What we stand for is the opposite of what happened in Christchurch on Friday - our crusade is one for peace, unity, inclusiveness and community spirit.”

It is so easy to over-analyse situations and this is one of them.

If people are offended by the

Crusaders name, they should also be offended by the Highlanders and Chiefs, who could all be part of bloodshed, while Hurricanes kill people every year and a line could be drawn to the Blues as a name with gang affiliations.

The point being, in 2019, it’s a stretch to make the argument at best.

It is another sad occurrence for Christchurch but there is no indication the name of the most successful Super Rugby franchise ever had anything to do with this.

The name has been in existence since 1996.

Plenty of professional sports teams have names meant purely to be intimidating purely from a sporting sense.

The Brisbane Bullets basketball team, the San Jose Sharks ice hockey team and Essendon Bombers in Aussie Rules all come to mind as potentially contentious names which remain and have stood the test of time.

Let’s learn from this horrific outcome, but let’s not overreact to matters of sport.

Raroa to release 50 white doves before event Raroa Intermediate School has put out a statement expressing the deep sadness the school feels following the tragic events of the mosque shootings last Friday and the devastating impact on the Muslim community, the people of Christchurch and all of the local schools.

Ian Rogers, organiser, of The Team Yip Johnsonville 5km Walk & Run, says the major school fundraiser for the Covered Outdoor Learning Area will proceed as planned this Sunday March 24.at 10am.

However, he says, in respect for the many affected by the tragedy, they recognise that many people in the community may wish to come together and show their support for the Muslim community, the schools and the people of Christchurch.

Therefore, he says, at 9.50am, before the start of the event, 50 white doves will be released to remember the victims.

“We have consulted with the local Muslim Community and acknowledge the support of the local Imam, Khaled Said at this difficult time.”

“He will be present, along with Ohariu MP Greg O’Connor.

“Readings of peace will be shared by Raroa students and two Muslim youth readers from the local Mosque in Newlands.

“We will observe a minute’s silence before the walk and run starts.

Raroa students have also been encouraged to wear white, the symbol of mourning, on Friday as a gold-coin fundraiser.

“We welcome all members of the community to attend the

Historic win for Miramar Bowling Club The Miramar Bowling club has had an amazing season, one that has proved to be a remarkable period in the history of the club.

The Bowls Wellington Men’s Interclub Premier Reserve grade had three sections, two of which

were won by Miramar teams.

This feat has never been achieved before. In the play-off at the Island Bay club, Miramar 3 beat their club mates Miramar 2 and then went on to beat the previously unbeaten Naenae side to take the

title for 2019.

The vocal Miramar club supporters certainly helped urging their teams on to victory in a tense and exciting play off.

Round One saw Miramar 2 play Miramar 3 and although a

close encounter Miramar 3 won through with three wins, each with a bonus point. In Round Two Miramar 2 played Naenae in a closer competition and gained two wins thus making Round Three a match where Miramar 3 had to

win only one game against Naenae to take the title.

However in the early stages of all three disciplines (singles, pairs and fours) Miramar were down. Naenae were gaining in confidence but Miramar’s players gradually placed their bowls closer to the jack.

Just one win was needed and in an epic encounter the pairs did that and with Miramar becoming the Premier Reserve champions it qualified for the promotion/ relegation games to be held on Saturday, March 23.

Miramar has the opportunity to create even more history by being one of the top two teams in this play-off and qualify for the Premier competition.

The Miramar 3 winning team included Rob Veale in the Singles; Brent Stubbins and Keith Hastings in the Pairs; and Wayne Coleman, Ian McLeod, Dave Shedlock and Hughie Galbraith in the Fours.

Miramar 2, which finished runner-up included Mike Andrews in the Singles; Dennis Mann and David Allen in the Pairs; and Carl Northcott, Jaime Reporama, Greg O’Connor and Mark Poynter in the Fours.
