Kai for the community By Gerald Rillstone

In the four years Tihei Rangatahi at Wainuiomata’s community hub has been providing free food for those that need it the service has seen a steady increase. Tihei Rangatahi’s Renee Davies and Kathleen GodinetSamuilu, both facilitators at the community hub, have their hands full gathering the donated kai and getting it to those that need it most. “We get Kaibosh food rescue supplying food Monday to Thursday, and on Tuesday’s we also get Saint Vincent De Paul dropping off pretty much a truck load of food ,” Kathleen says. Continued from page 1. “There is always a number of people waiting outside with a box to gather their food and it is mostly fruit and vegetables on a Tuesday.” The youth group and after school programmes for primary school through to intermediate age children are also run out of the hub and the donated food Kathleen says helps provide good quality sustenance for the youth of the community. “Kaibosh gets the stuff that might be past its best before date, not the expiry date from the supermarkets and they

disperse it out to community groups such as ourselves,” Kathleen says. People can come in and put their names down if they need food, Kathleen says, and if it becomes a regular thing for some people then they try and work with the person to help them out of the situation. “There are only so many people that we can help and really this is emergency kai,” she says. Often it can be that they are on the wrong benefit and that needs sorting out but there are those who need food and have

nothing. “We not only provide food but also provide intervention to help people get out of a difficult

situation,” Kathleen says. It does take a lot of pride to come in and ask for food she says.

Wainuiomata couple crack 60 By Gerald Rillstone

More than 60 years ago Janice & Kevin Harrigton met while they were both working at the Railways in the clerical department. “I had been transferred up from Christchurch and my first job was working in the engineer’s office,” he says. That was in 1954 and a few years later Janice Kennedy came to work in the same office and caught Kevin’s eye. They were married on the 21st of March 1959 at the Laings Road Methodist Church which is now long gone. Kevin’s best man lent them his little Austin car, Kevin says, and they spent their first night on honeymoon in Palmerston North and then further north for a week in Napier. They both then moved on from the Railways with Kevin taking a job with Bycrofts Biscuits. “That was the first few years of our marriage and later with Feltx for twenty years,” he says. They had shifted to Wainuiomata because it was an

economical place to live and great for bringing up a family, Janice says, and brought their first house with four bedrooms in 1959. “It was a busier place in those days, there is a lack of shops now which is very frustrating,” Janice says. Three children followed Christine, Sharon and Susan. Over their time in the valley they have been involved with the golf club, bowling and the rugby club. Janice went back to work part-time and spent 31 years with Woolworths and left just before it changed to Countdown. One of the things they put down to surviving 60 years of marriage is having different interests. “You can’t be in one another’s pockets all the time, couples need their own things to do,” Kevin says. The couple will mark the milestone with a night at a hotel in Wellington city and with family and friends.

Community gathering Mayor Ray Wallace has announced there will be a community gathering in Lower Hutt on Wednesday March 20 to mark the events in Christchurch and show support for the victims and their families, as well as the local Muslim community. The gathering will take place at the Hutt Recreation Ground from 7pm. Hutt City Council has today also opened a book of condolence at the Council Administration Building in Laings Road for anyone wanting to express their condolences.

Hayden Wilby puts on an exhibition burnout in his purpose built Holden Commadore. PHOTO: Supplied

Burnout king in Wainuiomata, Hayden Wilby is aiming for the top of the table with a trip to Australia in the offering. He travels the country attending events, burning rubber, and is now third from the top in the competition table. At each New Zealand Burnout Competition event, drivers earn points with every judged round that they compete in.

Points accumulated throughout the series go towards earning themselves the Title of the NZBC Burnout Champion of New Zealand and the coveted prize of a trip to the Australian event. “A brand new set of tyres will last a minute thirty so I spend a fortune on tyres,” Hayden says. He uses the car as a promotional vehicle as well as getting

a huge amount of enjoyment out of the events. His signature burnout colour is orange and the tyres come impregnated with it. “I pick various points when I start the burnout and you sort of know where you are when the smoke gets really thick,” he says. “I earn a bit of prize money but not enough to outlay the cost of doing it.”

A lot of people put large amounts of money into their cars he says but you can have just as much fun in a $500 car as you can in a $50,000 car, Hayden says. “It’s a great outlet because we build these cars but you are not allowed to do it on the street so it is great to be able to put on a show in a purpose-built area,” he says.

What’s sprouting in Wainui By Megan Connolly

A beautiful day in Wainuomata on Monday meant the sun was shining over the community garden when garden advisor Richard Self and gardener David McMillan were out among the veges. The community garden, located beside the Whai Oranga O Te Iwiw Health & Community Dental Centre, has all sorts of vegetables and food you can wrap your mouth around like silverbeat, broccoli, tomatoes, even an edible flower that has a pepper like taste called

Nasturtium. David typically spends around three days a week tending to the garden and keeping it nice and tidy. The produce collected from the garden is left on the table in the Health Centre for patients and the community to take what they like, according to David. “It’s about bringing people together,” David says. Richard has been gardening all his life and advises David with the garden. Through the garden, Richard helps bring the community together and

corresponds with schools like Te Kura for days in the garden. “The thing I love about the garden is that everyone enjoys good food. “It doesn’t matter about your racial or political stance because everyone just loves good food. “It’s something a community garden can give us,” Richard says. Recently, Richard and a group of students had a big day in the garden digging up kumaras. There is even some corn shooting up that is being grown especially to dry and turn into popcorn kernels, according to Richard.

Trillian Trust’s charity car rally paid a visit to Pukeatua School last week. Principal Jenni Adam says it was fantastic for the kids to get a visit from Trillian Trust. “It was a very exciting day for students and staff,” she says. “The volunteers cooked up a pile of sausages for breakfast on their ingenious cooking trailer which were thoroughly enjoyed by the students

and then it was everyone into the hall to see who had won prizes.” Three of our students won BMX bikes and helmets, another student won a prize for her beautiful colouring competition entry and other students received gift packs. Students were also treated to a magic show from Super Hubert. “Then it was time for the rally drivers to start up their engines and head off to their next destination.,”

Jenni says. The 20 plus whacky vehicles brought smiles on everyone’s faces. The Trillion Trust aims to raise money for Kiwi kids who need it and aim to put smiles on faces which they certainly did here at Pukeatua school. They have raised over $10 million dollars over the past 27 years, with the help of generous New Zealanders.

Cash boost for Rangatahi learning centre By Gerald Rillstone

Rangatahi Learning Centre has won gold with an application for funds from Hayden Wilby’s community cash grab. With a community-minded spirit Hayden Wilby is keen to help out and each year he is approached at his business the Fitzroy Tavern, to sponsor or support local groups. This year Hayden decided

to try something different and put $5,000 up for grabs for the Wainuiomata community. “These guys grabbed a form, filled it out correctly and gave us all the information we needed to make an easy decision,” Hayden says. “This is what it’s all about guys, us helping those that would not normally be able to get funding elsewhere.” Hayden says the Learning Cen-

tre do a fantastic job with kids that have been excluded from main stream learning. “We are giving them a grant to be able to take these kids for six sessions at Naenae Boxing Academy where they teach youth valued lessons about being independent and responsible within their community. The Learning Centre was granted the $690 in funds they asked for.

Enliven encourages seniors to try Tai Chi Many people agree that Tai Chi is a beautiful art form to watch. But it is also a great form of exercise which offers significant health benefits, especially for seniors. That’s why Enliven positive ageing services is inviting Wellingtonians to come along to its modified Tai Chi classes – and offering first-time participants who attend class on or before March 31st their first session free of charge. “When you do Tai Chi, you improve your mind-body connection, as well as your concentration, balance and flexibility,” says Enliven Tai Chi instructor Michael Cheng. “The movements are very gentle so there’s little chance of injury, which makes it a very good form of exercise for beginners.” Tai chi is an ancient Chinese practice which involves performing a series of movements in a slow, focused manner. Enliven’s classes aim to help elders reduce their fall risk and are designed so that all participants can take part at a level which is appropriate for them. Lenie Timmer, a regular Tai Chi participant at Enliven’s modified Tai Chi classes in Wainuiomata, says the sessions have helped her make a big difference to her quality of life. “Tai Chi has been great for my balance and coordination, and it takes a surprising amount of concentration, which is good for my brain!” “I really like the flowing movements and I love that it’s easy to keep practising Tai Chi at home in between classes.

2019 Yamaha New Zealand Enduro Championships The 2019 New Zealand Enduro Championships kick off in the Thames-Coromandel District this weekend and it’s anybody’s guess as to who might win. Boosted from five to seven rounds this season, the Yamaha and Mitas tyres-sponsored series will take riders from round one at Whangamata in the north this Saturday to round seven at Hokitika in the south, each offering extreme and varied terrain challenges for the riders. But, difficult landscape aside, it is the talent of the riders and the reliability of their bikes that will determine who finishes on top when the final round wraps it all up in July. One thing is almost certain ... a new outright champion will be crowned in 2019. Taupo’s defending national enduro champion Brad Groombridge injured himself while racing at the final round of the New Zealand Motocross Championships in Taupo last weekend, ruling him out of action this coming Saturday and possibly for longer than that too. But there are plenty of talented riders who are capable of stepping forward. Wainuiomata’s Jake Whitaker and Helensville’s Tom Buxton could be expected to battle near the head of the field on Saturday, while young guns such as just-turned 21-year-old Seth Reardon, of Whanganui, and Blake Wilkins, of Whitianga, will certainly keep them honest.

SPORT Sports talk

11

with Jacob Page

Crusaders name must go on Sport barely matters after the tragedy which happened in Christchurch on Friday. Quite rightly, a host of sport and community events were cancelled as a mark of respect to the victims and those affected. Included in that was the cancelled Super Rugby game between the Highlanders and Crusaders in Dunedin. It didn’t take long for media organisation, Stuff, on the back of social media, to write a column questioning whether what happened on Friday meant

the Crusaders name needed a serious rethink. The column, which ran without a byline - surprise, surprise, had a largely negative response from people on Facebook. The tragedy will mean that our way of life will be questioned, laws will be changed but to alter the name of one of New Zealand’s most successful sports teams because of one disgraceful individual and his acts, is knee-jerk and an outcome of raw emotion spilling over. This is political correctness

gone mad. On Sunday night, the Crusaders released a statement acknowledging the chatter saying “For us, the name is a reflection of the crusading spirit of this community. “What we stand for is the opposite of what happened in Christchurch on Friday - our crusade is one for peace, unity, inclusiveness and community spirit.” It is so easy to over-analyse situations and this is one of them. If people are offended by the

Crusaders name, they should also be offended by the Highlanders and Chiefs, who could all be part of bloodshed, while Hurricanes kill people every year and a line could be drawn to the Blues as a name with gang affiliations. The point being, in 2019, it’s a stretch to make the argument at best. It is another sad occurrence for Christchurch but there is no indication the name of the most successful Super Rugby franchise ever had anything to do with this.

The name has been in existence since 1996. Plenty of professional sports teams have names meant purely to be intimidating purely from a sporting sense. The Brisbane Bullets basketball team, the San Jose Sharks ice hockey team and Essendon Bombers in Aussie Rules all come to mind as potentially contentious names which remain and have stood the test of time. Let’s learn from this horrific outcome, but let’s not overreact to matters of sport.

Football import Ben versity, on a football scholarship when he was 18 years old. An advantage of having good football skills Ben says is that it opens doors all around the world, travelling and playing soccer and helping out with coaching for various teams. “There is an agent in England that used to coach in New Zealand and sends people to

various teams in New Zealand and after seeing a clip of me playing they offered me a six month contract,” Ben says. He is six weeks into that contract and has already warmed up with a few pre-season games. “I am keen to play in the national league here once the season finishes and also play

Wainui face Sri Lankan Sports By Greg Ross

Seeking a win to seal another grade title, Wainui Cricket’s first team faced Sri Lankan Sports in a top of the table clash at Bryan Heath Park on Saturday. The visitors won the toss and asked Wainui to bat first in decidedly bowler-friendly conditions. Wainui battled hard to make 155 all out off 54 overs, with Tim Wilson’s 50 anchoring the

effort. The value of that hard graft showed when Wainui bowled SLS out for 52 in just 16 overs. Left-armer Callum Mackaness produced career-best figures of 7-25. Asked to bat again, SLS made their way to 45-2 and still needed nearly 60 runs to make Wainui bat a second time. Wainui’s second team took on Taita on Bryan Heath #2.

The Wainui team have been big improvers in recent weeks and carried on their good form by bowling Taita out for 142 and getting to 121/5 at stumps. Wainui are well set up to take first innings points and push for an outright result. In the T20 grade, Wainui Rosco were beaten by Taita in the last over while Wainui Brownie beat upper Hutt Zulus by default.

Support Otautahi Christchurch Community Gathering We’ve all been shocked and saddened by this extraordinary act of unprecedented violence in Christchurch and we stand united in our grief. I echo others who have said these actions have no place in New Zealand. We’re holding a community gathering in Lower Hutt to mark the events in Christchurch and show support for the victims and their families, as well as our local Muslim community. in Australia for a few years,” he says. Ben says he’s not aiming to play in the top league in England. His focus is on playing in different countries. He is finding a break form England, while there is the debacle over Brexit, a good thing and isn’t planning on returning for good in the near future.
