Moving from primary school to intermediate school can often be intimidating but also exciting with new learning opportunity’s on offer, Ella Sue and Nixon Awa talk about their experience.

Nixon spent his primary years at Konini Primary School and is now in his last year at Wainuiomata Intermediate and Ella was at Fernlea School.

“I sort of had it planned from year five and six that I would go to Wainui Intermediate me and my parents had that plan,” Nixon says.

Intermediate life Continued from page 1.

“What attracted me was it is only down the road and all the opportunities that I saw they were giving at the school.”

Ella’s parents were keen for her to go to a local intermediate school to support the community.

“My Dad likes to do things for the community so having his children go to a Wainui school is one of those things,” Ella says.

Among the opportunities Nixon says are the range of inter-school sports events from volleyball to netball and rugby.

“We partake in lots of competitions in and out of school and we also have a lot of extension classes at the school if you want to extend your knowledge of certain things,” Nixon says.

Those classes range from English, Sport, Maths and Science.

“At the moment I am doing English and Sport and in sport we focus on a wide range of sports and at the moment we are working on volleyball because it is a bit different than main stream sports.”

Ella has also taken up a range of extension classes with Maths

her favourite.

She chose Maths as it is one of her favourite subjects and she is aiming for a Maths award at the end of the year.

“Life at the school is very different to how primary school life was and you do drift away from your original friends but there are lots of new opportunities and you can find things that you can enjoy doing and are passionate about,” Nixon says,.

Ella was apprehensive about coming to the school she says when her first year got underway it was so engaging she never wanted to have a day off.

Both students agree there is a good range of teachers all with different skills, “they teach us a lot from different perspectives,” Nixon says.

“I thought the work was going to be more advanced and harder and when I got here I could do the work and it still gives me a challenge.”

Nixon is also very keen on the schools bilingual unit Te Kahu Tamariki which means the gathering of the children.

“I think it is a really important class and one that stands out for me,” he says.

Matariki HUB celebrations

Kaitiaki o Kaupapa Maori Louana Fruean is coordinating a community celebration for Matariki this weekend at the Wainuiomata HUB. Louana says she always thinks it is important to put on an event for the whole community the catch phrase this year being ‘Manawatia a Matariki’ (honouring Matariki).

She has partnered up with the Library HUB to hold the community event to educate and celebrate Matariki with waiata, artists, market and sharing kai.

Matariki is celebrated by the lunar calendar on the moon

in Tangaroa she says and the easiest way to see this is to go down to the HUB and check out what that looks like.

Louana says Matariki is also a time to remember all the people that have passed away since the last Matariki the star Pohutukawa.

“We are ending this years Matariki with a shared hangi on Saturday, that will be cooked at the marae and eaten in the library sitting at one huge big table, marae style,” Louana says.

“It is also a time to reflect and think about the dreams and aspirations for you and your whanau.”

Pet cemetery neglected

During the 1960’s Wainuiomata local Anne Nichols developed a pet cemetery and provided a valuable service to pet lovers who wanted a spot to remember their beloved family member, but since it was sold it has bought heart ache for local man Peter York-Wells.

He would like to see the Hutt City Council buy the land and recreate the pet cemetery for local animal lovers.

The Garden of St Francis Pet Cemetery on Coast Road is home to his two dogs Gyp and Scamp. who were put to rest there in the 1960’s.

Since it was sold a number of years ago it has become over run with weeds and Peter says he can’t bear to visit.

inbrief news New completion for cycleway Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency has announced a new completion timeframe for the Petone to Melling cycleway, the northern section of Te Ara Tupua which is currently under construction.

Director of Regional Relationships Emma Speight says the project, which was scheduled for completion later this year, is now expected to be finished in early 2023.

Existing underground pipes and cables run along the length of the new cycleway including gas mains, power supply and fibre broadband cables.

Working around this critical infrastructure has been complex and taken more time than previously expected.

When complete the Petone to Melling section will link the Nga Uranga ki Pito-One (Ngauranga to Petone) shared path with the Hutt River Trail near Bridge Street – Lower Hutt.

It will also integrate with new paths planned as part of RiverLink.

Feedback sought on limits Fisheries New Zealand is inviting people to have their say on proposed changes to catch limits and other settings across a range of fisheries for the new fishing year, beginning 1 October.

This review focuses on 15 fish stocks across the country, with proposals to change their catch limits and allowances.

Deemed value adjustments are also proposed for some of these stocks, as well as for an additional six fish stocks.

Deemed values are rates paid by fishers for excess catch, and provide incentives for individual commercial fishers to stay within limits.

Submissions can be made online by 5pm Tuesday 27th July 2021.

Celebrating 45 years for Choral

Hutt City Chorale celebrated 45 years of singing and performing in Wainuiomata and the Wellington region recently.

Given the absolutely dreadful weather, the choir had a very receptive audience at St Stephens

Church hall, Hutt City Chorale chairperson Prue McIvor says.

“Everyone enjoyed the selection of songs, all of which had been previously performed by the choir over the last 45 years,” Prue says. “ It was a wonderful opportunity for the full choir to sing in four part harmony, back soloists

from within the choir, in particular a choral version of the songs from Mamma Mia the film and also enjoy several solo’s and a duet of Hine e hine with piano accompaniment. Our choir accompanist performed as well with a wonderful version of the jazz classic, Autumn Leaves.”

It is forty-five years since the choir was first formed by John Knox, a well known Wainuiomata resident and the choir was known for the first 42 of the 45 years as the “Wainuiomata Choir”.

Previous choir members were also invited to join for the concert.

Keeping woofers warm SPCA is calling on animal lovers to gather their warmest blankets and dog jackets to donate to fourlegged friends this winter.

In a bid to keep canines out of the cold, SPCA will be providing the items to dogs living outside in kennels throughout Wellington and Wairarapa.

The campaign kicks off this week, with the animal welfare charity asking the local community to donate any unwanted blankets and dog jackets over the next two weeks.

These will then be distributed to pet owners with outside dogs throughout Wellington and Wairarapa on a first come, first served basis.

SPCA Inspector Elissa McIntosh started the campaign because

she wanted to ensure canines living outside in kennels are provided with enough warmth and shelter to keep them happy and healthy.

“Just as you might rug up with a jumper, beanie and scarf in the wintry weather, your pets need extra protection from winter’s elements as well,” Elissa says.

“I’ve seen first-hand many dogs sleeping outside in kennels and how grateful their owners have been by the simple gesture of receiving a blanket to keep their dog warm.

This is one of the ways we want to help these dogs, but also to let pet owners know that SPCA are here to help if they’re struggling.”

SPCA Scientific Officer Dr Alison Vaughan says adequate shelter is essential year-round, but more so

during winter.

“If your dog is outside during the day while you’re at work, make sure they have a shelter or kennel that is well insulated and doesn’t have any gaps where drafts may come through,” Alison says.

Donations of blankets and dog jackets can be dropped off at SPCA’s Wellington and Masterton Centres, their Johnsonville, Lower Hutt and Masterton Op Shops, as well as at South Wairarapa Vet Services’ clinics across Wairarapa, from 14-27 June.

Pet owners in the Wellington and Wairarapa region with outside dogs can express their interest for blankets and jackets by emailing SPCA at wellington.info@spca.nz.

However, not only was the concert a celebration of 45 years of the choir singing and performing in Wainuiomata and the Wellington region but also a farewell, as from the 8th July, Hutt City Chorale will commence rehearsing in Lower Hutt at St Marks Church on Woburn Road.

inbrief news Changes to firearms dealer licencing One of the key changes is the expansion of the types of activities that require a dealer licence.

This now includes those displaying arms items as the director or curator of a bona fide museum, and the business of repairing or modifying arms items.

These changes will not impact dealer licences currently in force on 23 June 2021.

Dealer employees can continue to possess their dealer’s firearms (firearms refers to pistols, restricted weapons, prohibited firearms) and prohibited magazines in their capacity as an employee subject to them: • holding a valid firearms licence and F endorsement (if handling endorsed firearms) on 23 June 2021; and • remaining employed by that dealer; and • until their employer’s dealer’s licence expires or is renewed.

Winter donations needed

As the days get colder more donations are needed at the Wainuiomata Koha Shed particularly blankets.

“We are desperate for winter blankets all sizes are needed.

We did put out a call a few

weeks ago but haven’t had any dropped off yet,” Koha Shed manager Jo Bryant says.

Along with the need for blankets there is also a high demand for baby clothes of all sizes.

“Any baby clothes boys or girls and also women’s winter tops, but blankets are our biggest

concern and winter bedding and sheets.”

The Koha Shed is a vessel for people to be able to give and share what they no longer have use for.

The Art of giving (what you no longer need) and taking (what you need for you and your fam-

ily) unconditionally and to share and help one another to live and survive.

The Koha Shed is open Monday and Tuesday 10am to 12pm, Wednesday 11am to 12pm.

Closed on Thursday and Friday.

No one has put their name forward in the race for the empty seat at the Hutt City Council.

Two weeks after the council released a statement saying Bassett had quit, effective immediately, no one has put their name forward to replace him.

Bassett had been on the council for 14 years, nine of which he served as deputy mayor. He most recently held the central ward seat.

A basketball battle to the finish

Wa i n u i o m a t a H i g h School’s senior basketball team put on a spirited performance but missed out in levelling the score against Wellington High’s senior team in the last three min-

utes.

From the outset Wellington High were on the attack and gained a 28-18 lead over Wainuiomata in the second quarter.

Wainuiomata played their hearts out through to the final quarter and came within

two points of levelling the score with a timeout with three minutes to go.

But it wasn’t to be this time with securing one more basket for the final score of 102-98 to Wellington High.

With the Wellington region at Alert Level 2, Netball Hutt Valley competition carried on with the exception of spectators and the team and management numbers limited to 14 people.

The restrictions and having no “cheer squad” did not stop our Ulalei Aute from nabbing their first win of the season against St Orans Club.

The win secured their place in Premier 1 for the remainder of the season.

Aute started slow allowing St Orans to lead at the end of the first quarter 16-12.

In the second quarter, WD Kolini Malolua was brought on, moving Te Araroa Sopoaga and Ressa Lealofi into the shooting circle. Sopoaga and Lealofi gelled well displaying some excellent movement in the shooting circle and finishing off with some sharp

shooting.

The changes proved to be a good move with Aute taking the lead at half time 30-24.

In the championship third quarter, Ulalei Aute maintained their composure to hold onto the lead 37-41.

In the final quarter, Ulalei Aute displayed their hunger to win, with defensive trio of Rebecca Forsyth, Cerie Milovale and Ria AberdeinTapua’i exerting pressure on the St Oran’s attackers resulting in multiple turnover balls for the shooters to convert.

Ulalei Aute controlled their lead in the final quarter to secure their first win of the season, final score 55-48.

“We grew into the game and started to position ourselves better rather than compete against their speed.

Moving Te Araroa from defence to GS was a game

changer.

Defensively we were strong, but there were patches where we struggled to get the ball down the court and finishing the goals”, says technical adviser, Poni Smith.

“I was really pleased with how the team kept their composure under pressure and finish with a win.”

Other results: Ulalei Pua lost to Naenae White 42-55.

Ulalei Fuesina lost to UH Rams Rua 37-13.

Ulalei Moso’oi defaulted to Naenae Pink, due to half the team either awaiting COVID-19 test results or unable to arrange childcare ar rangements due to the draw changes and Level 2 restrictions.

Seed sowing time : By Wally Richards July is the month to begin sowing seeds in trays or punnets to grow on for planting out later on.

Start with the more hardy types this month and then the more tender ones later in August.

The cost of transport and fertilisers that nurseries now have to pay to grow then to get their products to garden centres will mean that these costs will be passed onto you, when you buy seedlings in punnets this coming spring.

It is simple logic; if you have to pay several dollars for half a dozen lettuces in a punnet and it costs you less than that for a packet of lettuce seeds, which should give you over a hundred lettuce plants, which is better value?

All you need to do is learn how to germinate seeds successfully and grow them onto the stage where you can plant them out into your gardens. Which is very easy once you get the knack.

You can even go a stage further and allow one of each of a crop to mature and go to seed and harvest your own seed at no cost for future plantings.

If you do this year after year you will develop a strain of plants that are perfectly suited to your growing conditions.

All you have to do is let the best looking plant of a crop go to seed. Never let an inferior looking plant go to seed for this purpose as you will be collecting inferior seed.

For the best success in germinating and growing on, you should consider buying a heat pad and making a cold frame.

A cold frame can be made out of plastic or glass and the most simple one would be an old drawer that is about 15cm deep or deeper and one or more sheets of glass to cover the drawer area.

outside in a sunny area (for w inter) sitting on some bricks or similar so it is not in contact with wet ground.

Using a heat pad to warm the seedling trays into which you have sown your seeds means that you will ger m i nate muc h quicker and get a better strike of more seeds than you would without one.

The best medium for placing in the punnet is a good friable potting mix or compost.

Seed raising mixes are more expensive and generally speaking are not as good as a potting mix for best results.

I actually use Daltons Compost for seed raising by passing it through a sieve to obtain the finer particles.

The amount of seeds you sow should be a bit more than the number of plants you require and the seeds should be spaced nicely apart as best able.

Next make up a solution of Magic Botanic Liquid (MBL) in non chlorinated water at 20 mls per litre into a trigger type sprayer and mist the exposed seeds to make the whole area nice and moist.

Then lightly sieve a little more mix over the seeds to partly cover and mist again.

Most seeds like a little light to germinate so they do not need to be completely covered. The MBL assists greatly in rapid germination and gives the seedlings a great start.

Last season I had one gardener tell me that by using MBL on the pumpkin seeds he was germinating, it took only just over a week for the plants to be ready for planting out, normally it would be 2-3 weeks.

It is very important that the mix and seeds are kept moist and you must

remember to mist regularly when using a heat pad.

W here t he pad a nd punnets are placed is not important but should be somewhere that you are going to be... a few times a day such as in the kitchen. (so you don’t forget to mist regularly) Once you see a strike, with a number of the seedlings pushing up, with their first embryo leaves, you need to move the punnet to your cold frame because the germinated seedlings need overhead natural light.

This is the time that some gardeners make the mistake of not placing the freshly germinated seedlings into proper light.

When the natural light is coming sideways such as through a window then the baby seedlings will stretch and grow towards the light.

The stems stretch making them weak and prone to the disease which we call dampening off.

Once out into the cold frame or on a bench in a glasshouse the watering requirements will lessen greatly and likely a daily misting will be all that is required as there is now no under heat to dry the growing medium.

Seedlings are grown on till they reach a suitable size

to handle and transplant (Pricking out) into either small individual pots or into a larger seedling tray, nicely spaced apart individually to grow on.

In most cases about 6 seedlings to a punnet or even better one per cell in a cell tray.

Before you prick out, spray the young plants with Vaporgard and leave them for a day.

Then you plunge the punnet into a bucket of non chlorinated water till it stops bubbling.

With the mix being really saturated means it is easier to prick out each plant with minimal root damage.

Grow your seedlings in their new containers till they are of a suitable size to plant out.

When they are about ready to plant out spray them once again with Vaporgard which reduces transplant shock and then wait a day or two before planting into the garden.

Then placing a 2 litre plastic bottles, with their bottoms cut off and cap removed, over each of the seedlings will give them a great start.

1 1/2 cups Plain Flour 3/4 cup Chelsea White Sugar 1/2 tsp Salt 1 tsp Baking Soda 3 Tblsp Cocoa Powder

Line a square brownie type tin with baking paper and pre-heat oven to 180 degrees Celsius.

Sift first dry ingredients into a bowl and make a large well in the centre.

Pour in liquids, vinegar last.

Mix well. You can add chocolate chips if desired.

1 cup Cold Water 1/3 cup Vege Oil 1 1/2 tsp Vanilla Essence 1 Tbsp Vinegar Chelsea Icing Sugar

Place in oven and bake for 20 to 30 minutes depending on your oven.

Dust with icing sugar to serve.

Black caps earn their legacy win This group of New Zealand cricketers deserve the World Test Championship triumph.

The magical sixth-day performance which saw Kane Williamson’s men beat the might of India was the legacy cementing victory for this golden group of Kiwi players.

For me, a sleep-deprived week of viewing ends with writing a victorious column in the warm after-glow of the victory while still wearing my Kane Williamson ‘steady the ship’ hat.

There will be many cricket tragics who would have happily gone to sleep exhausted but immensely satisfied.

The result eases the pain of the 2019 World Cup final and ensures our tiny country of 5 million gets respect from the major cricket powers globally.

As was mentioned on the commentary, for once, nice guys do finish first.

A result like this takes a lot of people and preparation.

Credit must go to the 22 players who played test matches for

New Zealand over the two-year cycle.

In a quiet moment, I’m sure former captain Brendon McCullum and coach Mike Hesson take personal satisfaction from the result.

The duo laid the platform for this unrivalled culture of success.

The fast bowling quartet of Tim Southee, Trent Boult, Neil Wagner and Kyle Jamieson is the best quartet of bowlers any one country has at its disposal.

captain Virat Kohli not only with bat in hand but tactically as well.

Even the old warhorse, Ross Taylor, likely no longer at his best, was able to hit the winning runs after a gritty unbeaten 47 which was an ideal innings for the situation.

A country like New Zealand should never beat India whose population of more than 1 billion is cricket-mad to the point of it being a religion.

New Zealand cricket must get credit for organising two tests

against England in the lead-up to the game.

It allowed the team to be better prepared than the Indians and helped them adjust to the English conditions.

In the big moments, that proved vital.

This group deserve a victory to truly hang their hat on, it’s a legacy triumph that could very well be the cricket highlight of many generations.

Hopefully, it inspires kids to play the game so future success is not so far away.

Reserves bounce back The Reserves bounced back from last weeks defeat in some style. Away to Kapiti, the boys walked away 6-1 winners to keep the pressure on the league leaders. Sitting in 4th place and only 2 points behind the league leaders, the league is going down to the wire.

Halfbaked left it late but made it 3 wins in 3 games for round 2 on a wet and muddy Richard Prouse. With the game tied at 2-2, a Brendan Whyman screamer in the 89th minute put the boys in front before Callum Waugh put the cherry on top with a fast counter attacking move.

The Fiddick’s and their lucky number 7 made a not her app e a r a nc e as hat-tricks to Adam Faulkner and Andrew Olivier locked in the 3 points with a 7-3 win at Miramar Park.

Both Pacifica teams were out at Adventure Pa rk a nd wh i le t he Originals in Masters 6 managed to keep a clean sheet and score 4 goals of their own, the Masters 3 side had another difficult day. Facing middle of the table Porirua, it was the home side that found their rhythm and won 4-1.

The OC’s faced Island Bay in what can be described as a tug-of-war type of game. With the goals flowing for both sides, it was the away team that managed to scrape away with the 3 points with a 3-2 win.

On Sunday the Under 17’s found themselves transferred to Wellington College to face top of the

This game is up there as one of the entertaining games of the season with 7 goals and a penalty save, it was a game you could not take your eyes off.

The young lads took the game to the undefeated side and it went all the way to the final minute where it ended in heart break as Western Suburbs won it in the 90th minute.

The final game of the weekend saw our ladies travel to Alex Moore to face North Wellington. A double to Gemma Krebs and a second penalty save in as many weeks for Ashley Porter, the ladies played a fantastic game but sadly had nothing to show for it. The home side winning 4-2 to end our ladies unbeaten streak.
