Joseph Stewart’s path to a pair of national open water swim titles at Taupo last weekend was anything but conventional.

The 18-year-old from Ngaio, who won the 5km and 10km double while representing Karori’s Pirate Swim, did so at his first ever ocean swim event.

Joseph Stewart makes waves with national titles Joseph has been swimming competitively in the pool since the age of seven but it has only been the past couple of years where he began to make regional and national swim events in the 400m, 800m and 1500m freestyle.

His relationship with coach Steve Francis is a special one because Joseph is deaf which means there are a lot of hand gestures and lip-reading during training.

“It was my first time doing an open water race so I just went into it thinking I had nothing to lose,” he says.

“Honestly, knowing I had completed it felt better than the realisation that I’d won.”

He says the biggest challenge for the weekend was preparing mentally to swim such a long distance.

“My coach and I had been thinking about it for some time, even if it was a good friend who dared him to enter the 10km.

“I felt like I had done the preparation mentally but I wasn’t sure if I would be ready physically because it’s early in the season.

“Because I’m deaf, I can’t hear the starter in races and it wasn’t until I was on the beach where I realised I had to ask the referees how I was going to start, but

they had flags to signal me that I could start.

“I’m pretty useless at swimming in a straight line at times so in both races, the officials had to get me back on course.

“I yelled at myself in frustration under water, but that focussed me and it was like learning on the job.

“I also didn’t give myself

enough food and water during the 10km race which made things hard in the later laps.”

Joseph completed the 10km in two hours and seven minutes and 62 minutes for his 5km victory.

Joseph says he is keen to take part in the International Deaf Games later in the year, coronavirus depending.

“When I started racing in the pool at seven-years-old, I was utterly useless, I was just a kid doing it because it was fun,” he says.

“It’s only the past two years that things have started to change.

“I’m a very competitive person so I always want to do the best I can but make sure I’m having fun at the same time.”

O’Connor keeps faith in Jville Mall redevelopment

Ōhāriu MP Greg O’Connor says be believes the owners of Johnsonville Mall do want to see it upgraded sooner rather than later.

While shops continue to sit empty anf the facilities continue to look tired, Stride Property confirmed in November they would release plans for a redevelopment when the times is right.

However, shoppers and residents alike have grown frustrated with the lack of progress on a redevelopment that was first suggested in 2009.

Greg says he believes Stride have genuine intentions.

“I’ve cultivated an active relationship with their board and management and I am confident they are determined to do something with the mall.

“I have faith and to be fair I understand each time they have been ready to go that the GFC (Global Financial Crisis) and the Kaikoura Earthquakes were two quite major interventions that changed plans.

“The latest one isn’t necessary Coronavirus, it’s the changing retail environment. “

Greg says new building like the New Zealand Post Super Depot out at Grenada would take away business the Johnsonville Mall would have received in the past.

“The national policy statement around residential buildings and with councils now being obliged by government to look at intensification is a real opportunity for the mall to go to the new mixed model that they discussed.

“Mixed model means residential, office, retail and entertainment type stuff.

“When I was a detective I always learnt to double-check everything you hear and I am confident there is a determination to get Johnsonville moving,” Greg says.

“The other thing that is happening is that there is stuff happening on the eastern side of Johnsonville Road which will give cause for many people in the Northern Suburbs to have optimism.”

Greg says the impact of the Johnsonville Library is proof of what can be done.

He also says the newly created Johnsonville Business Association will help push the cause of businesses in the area.

Search for missing kayaker continues Police searching the area where missing man Koyren Campbell’s kayak was located have found clothing items on the seabed that have been identified as belonging to him.

The Police National Dive Squad made the discovery earlier on

Tuesday.

As the Independent Herald went to print, the search continued.

This discovery raises a number of possibilities, all of which will be assessed, however it also increases Police’s concerns for Koyren.

Searching in the area where those

items were found is ongoing, along with searching in the wider area indicated by the RCCNZ’s earlier mapping.

This will be reassessed as weather conditions change throughout the afternoon.

We continue to appeal to mem-

bers of the public in the South Coast area including Eastbourne through to Wairarapa, or along the Miramar/Seatoun coast, to be vigilant and on the lookout for Koyren.

Police are interested in speaking to anyone who has come across a

life jacket in the greater Wellington area since Koyren went missing.

Police believe the kayak’s paddle also remains outstanding.

Te Kāinga apartment in Willis Street Apartment block are now accepting expressions of interest.

Expressions of interest open for Te Kainga Aroha apartments Wellington City Council is seeking interest from potential tenants for the first apartments in the Te Kāinga programme.

“The apartments are part of Wellington City Council’s Te Kāinga programme to provide quality, secure, affordable and long-term rental accommoda-

tion in Wellington,” says Mayor Andy Foster.

“As a Council we are working on a spatial plan to increase the supply of affordable housing in Wellington. The Te Kāinga programme partnership with the private sector to deliver affordable rental accommodation is a

first for New Zealand.

“To have our first tangible example of these efforts is extremely exciting to share with Wellingtonians. We currently have a further 300 apartments in the pipeline we are aiming to deliver in the next few years, and will make further announcements about this in the coming months,” says Mayor Foster.

Te Kāinga Aroha is located at 195 Willis Street and offers 52 one, two, and three-bedroom apartments. All apartments come with whiteware, free WiFi, bike storage and rubbish disposal. Rents start at $410 for one bed, $580 for two beds and $750 for three-bed apartments. Rents are assessed against the Wellington Housing Affordability Model that helps us understand what housing is affordable and for whom.

The Council has signed a 15-year lease with The Wellington Company (TWC) for the apartments.

TWC is responsible for construction and asset management, while the Council will manage the tenancies.

The initiative is cost-neutral to the Council, meaning there is no impact on ratepayers.

Applications for the apartments will be prioritised based on the following criteria: People who work in, or intend to work in, an essential public sector role.

People on a low to medium income (under $85,000 for an individual and $130,000 for a group) who have difficulty accessing rental housing in Wellington, and are not eligible for income related rent.

Do not own their own home.

Applicants don’t have to meet all the criteria for an apartment, but the more criteria they meet, the higher the priority their application will have. Anyone interested in renting an apartment is invited to register

Road maintenance work to start in Tawa Residents, commuters and businesses in Tawa can expect some disruption on the roads over the next month as crews will be busy with Wellington City Council’s annual road maintenance programme in the area.

From now until Friday 12 February (weather dependent), contractors will start resurfacing large sections of Tawa Main Road, extending from near the Tawa highway off ramp through to the Porirua/Tawa boundary.

The Council is responsible for providing and maintaining roading assets and facilities for the benefit of the public in Wellington. Main Road Tawa is a key route in the network, and this work represents a significant investment in the area.

Traffic management will be in place including stop/go traffic, detours in some locations and reduced speed limits.

Work hours will depend on the location, with some work being carried out at night and other areas during the day.

Traffic management has been designed with input from the community, businesses, residents and bus operators.

The work has been divided into six sections – three sections to be carried out during the day and three under night shift.

Timing and traffic management has been designed to minimise the impact of this work.

Transpower, the owner and operator of the National Grid, is undertaking a visual aerial survey of its transmission lines throughout the Wellington, Kapiti Coast and Wairarapa regions as highlighted on the accompanying map.

Focus on environmental health a key The message from Wellington communities is loud and clear, Greater Wellington needs to prioritise better environment health as part of its 2021-2031 Long Term Plan (LTP).

Over half of the 1,086 people taking part in the regional council’s LTP pre-engagement survey rated ‘Protecting and enhancing our environment’ as an extremely important priority to for Greater Wellington to focus on over the next ten years.

Penny Gaylor, chair of Greater Wellington’s Environment Committee, says reflecting our communities’ values on the environment as a fundamental part of whanau, whakapapa (ancestry) and wellbeing is important.

“Leaving the land for future generations in a better state than we found it, is highly valued.

The reality we are facing in this generation is that the environment has already suffered significant degrading - we have to halt that and recover our natural environment. This also speaks to our diverse communities who have different cultural connections to the land and the recognition that the natural environment plays an integral role in everyday life.

“Investing in the environment is viewed as an investment in personal and generational wellbeing. Our region sees the benefits our parks, forests and natural resources provide – and that a healthy environment in turn creates opportunities for

healthier ways of life,” says Cr Gaylor.

Adrienne Staples, deputy chair of Greater Wellington, says the perception of wellbeing is also linked to reshaping the regional economy following the impacts of COVID-19.

“Our community want to reduce the negative impacts on people’s way of life, they want jobs to be safeguarded, families to be supported and the continuation of investment into reforestation, revegetation and restoring native forest to support the ecosystem,” says Cr Staples.

The results from the survey spark optimism that our region’s response to COVID-19 is an opportunity to invest in the environment and the people – this is a chance to make the region a better place and in turn create more jobs.

Thomas Nash, chair of Greater Wellington’s Climate Committee, sees an opportunity for more people to find work helping rebuild the region’s natural infrastructure - forests, wetlands

and waterways.

“There are good examples of this already with the jobs for nature environmental programmes that provide opportunities to learn new skills in environmental protection and enhancement, and climate positive action.

“Across the board people are telling us that they value the natural richness of our beautiful region. They want to reverse any degradation of the land and waterways in our region and they are quite rightly looking to Greater Wellington to lead the charge. With support from communities and backing from volunteers, who already are dedicating their time and expertise in local areas and communities, we know we can get results,” says Cr Nash.

The public consultation on the 2021-31 Long Term Plan is expected in March next year.

GARDENING THIS WEEK Preparing for winter: By Wally Richards It may sound a bit unusual but now is the time to get organised with your winter gardens. With both vegetables and flowers it’s over the next couple of months you need to plant up seeds or seedlings so that you will have crops to harvest and displays of flowering plants in the middle of winter.

If you plant late; say April through to June, then there will be not much growth till the spring and then the vegetables will go to seed and be a waste of time. For flower plants it is not a problem. Planting vegetables such as brassicas at this time of the year can be a problem because of white butterflies and their caterpillars devouring your young plants.

The best solution I have found for this is the following; If growing winter cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli from plants then check the plants you buy for the little yellow eggs of the white butterflies and rub them off the leaves so the plants are clean. Also don’t buy seedlings that are big as they are likely to have been stressed and may go to seed prematurely. Instead look for nice young plants and if a bit too small to transplant don’t worry, they are good value for you to grow on till they are big enough to transplant.

I like to spray the seedlings a few days before transplanting with Vaporgard as this reduces the transplant shock and the plants stand up without laying down as you often see with transplanting seedlings. They get away to a quicker start.

Also remember to plunge the punnet into a bucket of water to thoroughly wet the mix before removing the seedlings. This reduces root damage. When you make the planting hole, place some Neem Tree Granules into the base of the hole along with some of Wallys Unlocking your soil. Also sprinkle the same onto the soil around the seedlings.

The Neem Granules help to protect the plant from insect pests and the Unlocking your soil assists in root development, and supplies about 80 odd minerals and elements for a healthier plant and more nutritional value for you. Doing this only will help with caterpillar control but the next step will make sure you don’t have the pests on the plants and in amongst the curds of cauliflowers and broccoli when you harvest.

The total protection is by using hoops of alkathene pipe and crop cover mesh. You place lengths of the pipe into the soil making a hoop that’s about 1 metre tall over the row of plants.

The pipes are spaced about 50 to 70 cm apart.

Then take your crop cover which is 4 metres wide and place it over the hoops and on the windward side cover it with soil to hold secure. On the ends and the other side place lengths of old 100 x 50 (4 x 2) wood to hold in place. This allows you to open up and weed as needed.

The rest of the time the plants are protected from insects, birds, cats

and strong winds. The cover gives a 15 percent shade factor which in a sunny situation is also good value.

It allows rain or overhead watering with a soft wand to wet the soil still.

Winter vegetables such as leeks and brassicas should be planted as soon as. Remember to add natural products such as animal manures, blood & bone and garden lime. If you don’t feed the soil you don’t get the results. With the weather being a bit unsettled in many areas, a lot of the summer pest insects have not been as plentiful as if the weather had been more settled.

What I have noticed as a result is very little damage by psyllids on tomato plants outside and I have not seen any white butterflies except the odd ones.

Glasshouses are a real asset and I highly recommend that you keen gardeners invest in one before winter so you can extend your growing season.

In some areas it is the only way to grow some heat loving plants such as okra, luffa, cucumber, chilli and capsicums with a good degree of success even at this time of the year. For instance outside in the open dwarf beans and normal type climbing beans are doing well but snake beans are struggling. Not enough heat. If you are going to buy a glasshouse type unit then the best is definitely glass as opposed to plastic or other materials. Glass may break if you play cricket on the lawn but it will outlast as many years as you can garden, otherwise.

Now is the time to get organised with your winter gardens.

It’s easy to clean and maintain and unlike plastic film or similar materials it is not affected by UV so does not have to be replaced every few years.

By placing quarantine cloth over the vents and doorway you can make your glasshouse fairly insect proof.

(You can take insects into the house

on plant material or even in soil/ compost mixes.)

With the world’s weather patterns changing it could mean a glasshouse is the only way to have a reasonable control over the environment and be able to grow the plants you want.

RIGHT: Wellington is set to host a variety of summer events in the coming months.

Metlink to offer direct buses to strengthen Raceway Metlink is putting on special direct bus service to and from Trentham Racecourse over the next few weeks so punters won’t miss starting orders and get saddled with delays while essential track and station upgrades are underway on the Hutt line.

Metlink will be adding direct buses to its stable of services this summer for races on Saturday.

The direct buses will run from Wellington Station to Trentham Station.

The direct buses are in addition to trains which are still operating from Wellington Station to Taita, with bus replacement services stopping at all stops after that.

Standard train fares will still apply and PA departure announcements at Wellington Station will help inform passengers of the extra race day direct buses.

Three return direct buses will depart Trentham Station bus stop at the end of each race day bringing people back to Wellington Station. Again, these are in addition to the

standard bus replacement services and train services running on Saturday.

KiwiRail also plan to finish upgrades at Trentham Station by January 29 so normal train services can resume in time for Wellington Cup Day enabling Metlink to add extra train cars for the influx of folks that fancy a flutter.

Scott Gallacher, General Manager for Metlink, says taking a punt on the extra bus services made sense as there was too much at stake.

“We know that many people have had a staycation this year and are making the most of the region’s events so we expect more people than usual will be heading to the races in the lead up to The Wellington Cup. “We’ve been working with our rail and bus operators, Upper Hutt Mayor Wayne Guppy and the Trentham Racecourse to go the extra furlong and ensure passengers don’t face any barriers and can get direct access to the races while works at Trentham Station carry on.”

Metlink will put on direct transport to the Trentham Races on Saturday.

Purple haze under a night sky An unlikely collaboration between a Wairarapa lavender grower and an astronomer is proving a winning combination.

More than 400 people soaked up the beautiful night sky at Martinborough Lavender Star Gazing at Ranui Essentials earlier this month.

Such was the level of enthusiasm from star gazers, Ranui Essentials owner Tracey Voice is anticipating a similarly big turn-out for the next event, on Saturday 23 January “The majority of people were from Wellington and further afield . . . they absolutely loved it,” Tracey says.

Ranui Essentials is located on Dry River Road, 8km east of Masterton. The region is well known in the star gazing community for its remarkably low little light pollution making it perfect for a visual tour of the galaxies.

Tracey has teamed up with Becky Bateman, owner of Under The Stars, a nomadic stargazing service.

“This is the third year we have joined up with Ranui Essentials, bringing two different Wairarapa activities together,” Becky says.

“The vibe is so relaxed, and everyone is so happy to be surrounded by the beautiful purple haze of the lavender and they have the time to watch the summer stars pop out in the evening over a picnic.”

Noted for its pristine skies, Wairarapa has made an application to become an accredited Dark Sky Reserve. If successful it will be one of the biggest dark sky reserve in the world.

The annual Festival of Pots and Garden Art is a celebrated opportunity for potters to exhibit and sell their work in a collective exhibition.

Set in an expansive garden setting on Wellington’s Kapiti Coast, the Festival runs from 22–27 January and features many forms of pottery and ceramics. From domestic wares to large sculptural pieces, alongside framed art works and works in wood, stone and steel, visitors are in for a visual treat.

In addition, a full programme of artist demonstrations runs each day of the Festival.

Timmy throws his toys, shows true blue, Aussie colours The good boy of Australian cricket revealed himself last week as the sheep in wolf’s clothing that many knew he would be.

Captain Tim Paine, the man charged with leading the team both on the field but also in overhauling the terrible PR image the team had following sandpaper-gate in South Africa two years ago, let himself down during the third test draw against India at the Sydney Cricket

Ground.

His side were unable to bowl out a stubborn India on the final day which resulted in Paine sledging Ravi Ashwin with some pretty mediocre chat from behind the stumps.

At one point, he called Ashwin “a d***h***”, a comment which was picked up by the stump microphones.

What made it worse for Paine was he dropped three catches on the last day.

Paine’s antics are all too common from Australian cricket teams over the past two decades and while past teams have done much worse, Paine’s antics prove his nice guy act is just that.

Arrogance and the Australian cricket team go together like salt and pepper.

It’s a tried and tested combination and it is still alive and well in 2021.

Paine failed when the heat was on,

under pressure, he reverted back to type.

Despite being captain, he is a mediocre international wicket keeper by modern-day standards.

He does not have a test century to his name and while those across the ditch praise his glove-work, it is above average at best.

Now to his credit, Paine has apologised for his behaviour but it proves that culture is alive and well within

the team.

Australian teams have often got away with their verbal antics because they were a dominant team, the 2021 version is not blessed with the same talent.

The reality is, Australia cricket will always have an element of prickish nature to it.

The sooner they accept they can’t be the nice guys like the Black Caps, the sooner they can just get on with it.

Johnsonville blast their way to top of the table

Jeremy Benton proved his value with bat, ball and in the field to help his team beat Hutt District by three runs in their premier twenty20 match on Saturday before Gareth Severin blasted 128 off 63 to ensure Johnsonville remained unbeaten after four games.

Benton blazed an unbeaten. 65 off 43 before grabbing two wickets with his off spin and snaffled a late run out to get his side home.

Scott Mudgway made 31 as Johnsonville posted 174 for seven off their

20 overs with Felix Murray and Ben Skilton each taking two wickets.

Hutt District got contributions from their batsmen with four players going past 25 but no one could match Benton’s effort.

Hutt District needed 16 off the final over but the run out of Skilton for 33 all but sealed the game.

In the second game, Severin was unstoppable against Onslow College, crushing eight fours and nine sixes as Johnsonville amassed 245 for two.

Severin found support in Devan Vishvaka who smashed 67 off 34 balls.

The duo added 191 unbeaten for the third wicket off just 86 balls.

Onslow never threatened in the run chase but did bat out their 20 overs, eventually losing by 98 runs.

Captain Rakitha Weerasundara praised both Benton and Severin.

“Jeremy is a really busy player and really adds a lot to our team, while Gareth is another young player with plenty of talent,” he says.

“The fast start has been great for us we’ll hopefully be in the semifinals.”

Johnsonville play North City and Victoria University this Saturday before semifinals and finals.

Five Johnsonville bowlers have been selected for the Wellington Representative team to play in the Tararua Quad event at Kapiti onJanuary 31- Kaaren Guilford, Gill Oliver, Dale Rayner, Logan Amer

and Grant Wakefield have all made the team with playing groups decided closer at the time.

Gill Oliver built on that success by winning the Johnsonville women’s year one to five singles title, going a perfect 4-0 in her matches to claim the title.

The final of the women’s champion of champions fours was played on Sunday between teams skipped by June Wairau and Paula Meredith.

June, with Lil George, Dawn Neil and Nicola Lowe won 20-7 on the 15th end against Paula, Tannith Potgieter, Christine Hyett and Cathie Guilford.
